Rondar’s 5 decades of experience building world championship winning boats in many classes means that your new Sonar will be stiff, durable, and well finished. Most importantly, it will be ready to race to win, straight away! New Rondar Sonars have all come in under minimum weight, with a factory reinforced keel sump laminate schedule, fair bottoms & keels. A new boat eliminates concerns about fairing new keels, bottoms, or reinforcing sumps.

A new Sonar costs approximately $45,000 for boat, spars, and galvanized road trailer with brakes. For details, possible special offers or, fleet purchase options, please contact Rondar directly.

A premier builder of small sailboats since 1965, Rondar Raceboats became the builder of the International Sonar in 2015. The initial incarnation of Rondar Raceboats was launched by two keen UK sailors who wanted to support their hobby by buying their own equipment as inexpensively as possible. They had produced their own molds for the 505 class and had them built by an industrial molding company in New Milton whose owner was also a competitive sailor. The name “Rondar” was derived from the fact that they operated from Radnor Mews in London.

The molding company saw the potential in the racing dinghy market which was starting to boom in the 60’s and took over the original company. Through the 70s they increased the product range with the 420, Contender, Albacore, Fireball, and Europe, amongst others; and they grew to be a sizeable company building around 800 boats per year. They had numerous successes on the water and exported across the globe in a time when exporting was quite complicated compared to today. Composite construction was in its infancy, so boats were single cored polyester structures that went soft and took on weight over time. Frequent replacement undoubtedly fueled the rise in popularity of dinghy racing by providing a good supply of used boats.

Around the late 70s and very early 80s, the company was starting to struggle in another deep recession, and volumes dropped as better molding techniques were invented. The product range was rationalized down to the 505, Contender, and 420. At the same time, someone in the company developed the forerunner of the spa bath, with its applications for the elderly and the disabled, and the company took a gamble and exhibited the prototype at a major home show. They came away with a bulging order book, and a new direction in the construction industry, so the boatbuilding side was sold off to a couple of top flight 505 sailors–Peter White and Phil Milanes–who were better known at the time for being Seahorse sails and Milanes foils.

Sonar deck being moulded

Pete and Phil set-up the company in a converted farm building in Wiltshire, and persuaded several key employees from rival companies to join them. They enjoyed a number of successes with the three products they took over. The economy was doing better through the Thatcher years, and the business grew again. The global financial collapse of 1988 saw property values fall and the wealthier middle classes suffer which impacted the boatbuilding business quite severely. The original molds were now very dated and the boats, while well built, were no longer state of the art nor quite as competitive as they needed to be.

Paul Young, the current CEO, was crewing for Pete White at the time in the 505. Young was working with Racing Sailboats in London at the time, doing their boat work for pretty much all the top sailors of the day. They were the blueprint of the racing chandlery businesses that we have today. An honors graduate of Southampton University’s prestigious naval architecture program, Paul recognized the potential in Rondar and acquired the company from Pete and Phil in 1991. With the company in poor health, the immediate priority was to breathe life into the products and the 505 was the first class to be taken back to its original principles and redeveloped. This new Rondar 505 won the World Championships in 1993 and national titles in 8 different countries, and since then has won 17 of the last 21 World Championships and over 180 National titles. The 420 and Contender followed in rapid succession with World Championship successes, and the company enlarged its portfolio as time went on. The current models include the International 5o5, Squib, International Sonar, Firefly, K6, International Viper 640, and now the International 470.

Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club

Prelude (1).jpg

FOR SALE - Half shares in One Design Sonars

The Sonar was designed by Bruce Kirby and is a versatile day racing boat with excellent handling in all weather conditions making it a comfortable and confidence boosting starting point for yacht sailing and racing. It is also well known as an excellent training yacht and is used extendively for match and team racing.

There is a fleet of 9 One Design Sonars at the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club, all of which are part owned by the Club itself.  Each yacht is also half-owned by individuals or partnerships and there are now half shares for sale in at least 3 yachts.

Each individual/partnership will be free to use their boat for day-sailing or racing at all times, except when in use for specific events at the RNCYC.  Racing is available for owners on Tuesday evenings and the class at the Club also aims to participate in a number of local regattas on the East Patch each season.  The specific club events when the boats are in use take up 4-5 weekends and occasional evenings throughout the season.  These events tend to be team or match racing, and associated training days.

In return for maintaining the boats in racing condition and the costs of winter hoists/storage, the Club provides each yacht with a mooring, launch service and racing insurance.

This is an excellent and affordable opportunity to own a small day racing yacht, especially if done as a partnership as many boats are just now.  There are also great opportunities to get involved with the team and match racing events held using the yachts at RNCYC and join the team in events in the UK, Europe and USA.  More information on the boats and their design can be found at the International Sonar Class website  here  .

The yachts available are “Prelude” and “Blue House” and "Nona", in addition, the owner of Arrow is interested in a partnership or may also sell. A few photographs are attached and offers are invited for the half shares.  Prospective owners will have to join, or already be members of, the RNCYC.  Membership costs can be found   here   and it should be noted that these are significantly reduced for those under 31.

To view the yachts and for more details please contact Alan Yendell, Sonar Class Owners Rep  via the club office .

Sonar that Sees Whats Ahead

Simrads forwardscan sonar changes the way we see the bottom..

new sonar sailboat for sale

Most depthfinders are historical instruments. They collect and display information from the recent past-not the best arrangement for the sailor. By the time the sounder indicates a shoal, its already beneath you. But this is changing rapidly.

Technology that lets us see the water depth in front of us is now becoming both more user-friendly and more affordable. PS testers recently had the opportunity to test two new forward-looking sonar (FLS) technologies: the Simrad ForwardScan (discussed here) and the recently introduced Garmin Panoptix system, which uses Mill Cross arrays that can electronically steer the sonar beam to sweep the forward area and can even create 3D images.

In the field of forward-looking sonar, Simrad and Garmin are the most familiar names to sailors, but there are other contenders. One of the oldest builders of these systems, Echopilot, offers a twin-transducer, 3D, forward-looking system along with smaller, free-standing units. Farsounder, founded in 2001, also has a high-performance, forward-looking sonar suitable for larger yachts and commercial vessels.

Almost all new sonar systems will let you record and save your sonar data for later playback and analysis. This includes the ability to mark a spot of interest and save the waypoint information. A sophisticated user can take advantage of this feature to create high-resolution bathymetry charts with contour line resolutions as small as one foot. Navionics has an app that does this. The app is compatible with a range of depthsounders made by Humminbird, Lowrance, B&G, Simrad, Garmin, and Raymarine. Garmin released its own multifunction display-based version called Quick Draw in January. Maxsea and other navigation programs offer similar software for PC users.

FLS technology is not new, but earlier versions such as the Interphase system  displayed bottom images that were often challenging to interpret. It took practice to discern what the myriad scattered dots on the display were truly representing-fish, rocks, something else? The Simrad system cleverly removes this ambiguity. Although users still have the option of seeing the raw data-the dots, so to speak-we can also view a computer-generated rendering of the raw data that presents an easy-to-interpret profile of the sea bottom in front of the boat.

What We Tested

The Simrad ForwardScan is compatible with Simrads NSS evo2, NSO evo2, or B&Gs Zeus Touch2 multifunction displays (MFDs) and plugs into their integrated Sonar Hub module. The transducer, which also includes a temperature sensor, operates at the 180-kilohertz frequency, which eliminates cross-talk with most other transducers. This means we can use it simultaneously with an existing depthsounder without worrying about interference. A complete Simrad system starts at about $2,000, with the following breakdown: $1,100 for display (7-inch evo2), $600 for Sonar Hub, and $800 for the transducer.

The forward-looking range is variable, but due to the physics of the technology, its at best eight times the water depth. As an example, in 20 feet of water in optimum conditions, the system can see 160 feet. In 8 feet of water, it sees forward only 64 feet-about two boat lengths, or less, depending on the boat. The maximum forward view range is around 300 feet. Simrads specifications indicate that in nominal conditions, the forward range is four to five times the depth.

The system uses a vertical array of transducer elements that looks down and forward with a port-to-starboard beam width of 15 degrees. In our 20-foot depth example, the beam width is 42 feet at the theoretical forward distance of 160 feet. At the maximum range of 300 feet, the beam width is nearly 80 feet.

Given the limited forward range of this technology, we would operate at much slower speeds when using forward sonar to find our way up a difficult channel or through coral heads into a secluded cove. This is not such a big deal for a sailboat, which already operates at relatively slow speed. To put it in perspective, at 10 knots, you will travel the maximum range of 300 feet in just 18 seconds. Eighteen seconds doesn’t give the skipper a lot of time to react, much less come to a full stop. At 3 knots, you would have a minute, enough time to stop the boat.

Simrad ForwardScan transducer

How We Tested

We evaluated a ForwardScan transducer that was mounted on a Beneteau 55 and connected to a B&G Zeus2 glass helm, 12-inch (nominal) multifunction display located at the helm. Testing took place in the Florida Keys. We used the sonar for pass approaches, near shoaled areas, and in confined channels at speeds varying from near idle to 9 knots.

Installation

The Simrad ForwardScan transducer uses a 2-inch, stainless-steel Airmar housing and is installed like most transducers. It has a fairing block that will accommodate dead-rise angles up to 20 degrees. However, a fairing block is unnecessary if the hull is relatively level in the area forward of the keel. It can also be installed on the hull sides forward of amidships, so long as the sonar has a clear view forward. Simrads software can make a transducer correction of up to +/-15 degrees out of vertical plane, easing installation requirements.

Like other Airmar transducers that use the same housing, the Simrad transducer insert has O-ring gaskets, and the housing has a valve to facilitate removing the transducer and inserting a blanking plug while in the water. The transducer has a 30-foot cable that will need to be routed to the multifunction-function display.

The MFD setup procedure requires the user to enter several values. The first pair of values are critical: forward range and minimum water depth. The second pair is the forward range and depth warning parameters. These values are dependent on your anticipated travel speeds and transducer location when using the system. It is during this phase of the setup procedure that you can adjust the vertical alignment of the transducer, if required.

Using ForwardScan

The Simrad ForwardScan system has several page configurations controlled by menu options. Users can view the bottom solely as it is interpreted by the sonar software or can display the interpreted view with the raw data (the dots) overlayed on it. The latter view is the one testers preferred.

There are a few other ways to adjust what and how data is displayed. Users can select the amount of previous sonar history that remains visible (to track bottom trends or anomalies). Users can also determine whether they want the warning zones to appear on the screen, or want to show a birds eye view of the chart, with an image of the vessel showing its position. Ahead of the boat is a colored cone indicating depths by color-green for safe, yellow for caution, and red for danger (see photos). Ideally, the boat should be upright when scanning forward, otherwise the bottom image will be skewed.

You can adjust the depth range automatically or manually. Testers found that the automatic functions worked so well, there was no need to set the depth manually. There are no classic gain-adjustments that you typically find on sonars, but there is a menu-driven interference filter to help remove screen noise if required.

Throughout the duration of our test, the system was very responsive, and the display had no problem keeping up with vessel movement. Water conditions were close to optimal for using this type of equipment. The water was both clear and relativity calm, so the system was running near or at its maximum 300-foot range. We did not get the chance to see how the system would operate in rougher conditions, but we plan to do so in further testing in the future.

No matter the conditions, users should be careful to match the boats speed to the sonars range and the water conditions. If the forward-looking sonar is to be of any use, the skipper should be capable of coming to a full stop before the end of the preset warning zone. During most of the test, we were maneuvering at around 3 or 4 knots. Testers could clearly see a shoal on the sounder, and by turning from port to starboard, the channel center through the shoal area was clearly visible. The system also picked up a large, shallow, rocky spot to the port side of the channel and accurately visualized a seawall as we turned past it into a canal.

Bottom line: PS testers liked this technology. What makes Simrads system so much more practical than previous forward-looking systems is the way the engineers were able to translate sensor data into images that sailors can actually use to avoid obstacles ahead. When used properly, it can be a powerful aid to navigation. We can see it being particularly helpful in poorly charted areas, allowing the off-the-beaten-track sailor to creep into anchorages that see very few visitors. Even in well-charted areas, the forward-looking sonar can alert the navigator of new hazards, or when he has strayed out of the center of thoroughfares like the Intracoastal Waterway. This technology certainly isn’t something that every sailor needs, but for those who are already equipped with a Simrad multifunction display and like the idea of exploring new territory, it is definitely worth considering.

Sonar that Sees Whats Ahead

When Interphase Marine launched its forward-scan technology with the SE-200, PS contributor and high-latitude voyager Andy O’Grady was one of the first onboard. O’Grady reported that the SE-200 helped him navigate some tricky channels (see PS April 2008 online), but as the screen grabs from the SE-200 above illustrate (photos 2 and 4), the images were sometimes hard to interpret. By comparison, the new Simrad ForwardScan technology (photos 1 and 3) simplifies interpretation with more user-friendly views of the bottom ahead. The raw data also can be viewed, as can processed images.

1. A split-screen view from the ForwardScan shows the bottom contours ahead (left side) and a bird’s eye view of hazards based on pre-set alarms—red for danger, yellow for caution, green for safe (right side).

2. A split-screen view of the SE-200 offers similar views, but the pixelated presentation is not as definitive or easy to interpret.

3.This split-screen view is similar to the one in Photo 1, but this time, the bird’s eye view is overlayed with a satellite image and is zoomed out.

4. A relatively flat bottom delivers a somewhat scattered return in the overhead view (right) on the SE-200.

Are you going to review Garman’s Panoptix?

My experience with an older generation of forward scanning sonar that sequentially sweeps down to forward is that it could be of use, but only for anchoring. Otherwise, while underway it was useless, owing to the narrow window of time to react to a submerged obstacle as noted in this PS article. It is interesting however to know that the newer forward scanners do have features that some might find useful. Of particular use for avoiding submerged obstacles, if at a low enough speed, would be a menu option to select for continuous lateral sweep in full-time forward, thus w/o the down-to-forward sweeping function. Also, I am wondering if the scanners marketed as fish finders for high speed deep sea sport fishing would be of practical use for cruising sailors to identify partially submerged objects such as fish nets w/o beacon lights or partially submerged shipping containers. In this regard an audible alarm would be indispensable.

1978 Sonar Restoration by Shumway Marine

1978 Sonar Sailboat

1978 Sonar Sailboat – Awaiting Restoration

Late last fall we sold a 1978 Sonar to Skip Shumway of  Shumway Marine . The boat was in pretty tough shape. The blue gel coat had faded to a chalky hue. The black anodized mast had rubbed through to the bare aluminum. The rudder and keel were both a mess in each their own unique way, and the interior was pretty much shot.

We were certain that for the right buyer, though, we had a diamond in the rough. The Sonar is a great daysailer and racer, and we are glad to announce that this one is back!

Take a look at the after picture!

As the Shumway crew puts on the finishing touches, this boat is actively for sale. Interested ? Contact Shumway Marine through their contact page .

  • 900 lb. keel keeps the boat stable and dry.

Origin of the Sonar:

“The Sonar may well be the best boat I’ve ever designed.” – Bruce Kirby

It started when Bruce Kirby’s home club (Noroton Yacht Club, Darien, CT USA) couldn’t find the right boat to get their members involved in club racing; fewer and fewer of its members were participating.

They studied a great many existing classes of boats but all were considered too expensive, too slow, too demanding to sail, or just plain uncomfortable. So Bruce was asked to design a new boat specifically to meet the requirements of a club racing one-design keelboat fleet.

The result was the Sonar. The Noroton Yacht Club got every thing they wanted and more. And the Sonar has been greeted with enthusiasm by individuals and clubs all over the world.

Search Resumes for British Mogul and 5 Others After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily

The body of the vessel’s cook was recovered while divers searched the hull of the Bayesian for passengers, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday for six missing passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — of a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.

Twenty-two people were on board the 180-foot British-flagged sailing yacht, the Bayesian, which was anchored near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent storm.

Fifteen people who managed to get to a raft were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship. The body of the yacht’s cook, identified by news outlets as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was recovered on Monday. But several people are still unaccounted for, according to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Those still missing are Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur; his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Mr. Lynch was acquitted of fraud in a U.S. trial in June, ending a high-profile, decadelong legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett for $11 billion.

Mr. Lynch and the others went missing days after Mr. Lynch’s co-defendant at the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said in a statement.

Prosecutors in the Italian city of Termini Imerese, east of where the yacht sank, are opening a formal investigation into the yacht’s sinking. Reached by telephone, the chief prosecutor declined to comment.

The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late that night as crews found themselves limited to the bridge deck and items like furnishings “obstructing passage,” the firefighters’ corps wrote on social media .

When divers resumed the search on Tuesday, ships trawled the waters near the site, the corps said in a statement. The Italian Coast Guard also said in a statement that search operations were “continuing unabated,” with the deployment of helicopters. There was no evidence that gasoline was leaking from the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

The yacht was lying on its right side in about 165 feet of water, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could stay underwater for only about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters’ corps.

Divers were seeking a safe point of access to the vessel’s cabins. “Obviously, everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said, adding that the divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”

The firefighters’ corps said in a statement that it was impossible to verify whether people were inside the hull.

Mr. Cari said that several divers had been part of the search-and-rescue operations when the Costa Concordia, a cruise liner, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people. It is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in modern Italian history.

“It’s like the Costa Concordia, but much smaller,” Mr. Cari said in a telephone interview, comparing the search operations. “In the Costa Concordia, we came across many obstacles but we somehow were able to overcome them. Here, the obstacles block the passages and have to be removed.” He added, “This makes it more difficult.”

Crews were also trying to raise the yacht, which experts will examine to try to determine why it sank. Until then, experts can only hypothesize what happened.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which picked up the Bayesian’s 15 survivors, said in an interview that when the wind picked up around 4 a.m. Monday, the Bayesian was about 490 feet behind his vessel. Once the wind wound down, he said, he could not see the yacht anymore.

“My theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” Mr. Borner said.

Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, said: “Now I imagine that a whole series of lawsuits will be triggered, obviously to ascertain whether there is any responsibility, as always happens very unpleasantly in these situations.” He said, however, that in this case, responsibility might be hard to determine. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he added.

Several fishermen told Italian news outlets that they had witnessed a waterspout. Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said they were relatively common in the Mediterranean, though their occurrence and intensity are unpredictable.

“Until one actually forms, you can’t start telling people where it is,” Mr. Inness said, or “how to get out of the way.”

The inclement weather — with lightning intermittently streaking through the sky — made it hard to know exactly why the yacht sank. Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time the boat sank.

The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi. “Having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano. The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave,” he added.

He, too, cautioned that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Modern yachts are built to withstand meteorological events of reasonable intensity, and all international naval registers suggest that new ships be designed for higher waves and more frequent and extreme weather events.

But “this seems a case of an unreasonable extreme event,” said Emilio Fortunato Campana, an expert in Naval Hydrodynamics at Italy’s National Research Council. “In that case, no ship is 100 percent safe,” he added. “I think the Titanic showed that nothing is unsinkable.”

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Commissioned by members of Noroton YC of Darien CT USA and first built by Seidelmann Yachts. A few were also built by Carbon Index in the UK. Current builder (2019) is Rondar Raceboats.
