Luxury yacht sinks after fire; explosions heard on video

LOS ANGELES ( KABC ) — A high-end yacht docked at Marina del Rey sank after catching on fire Wednesday night.

The fire in Basin A was first reported around 8:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters responded and poured water on the 100-foot vessel from the dock at the end of Bora Bora Way.

Witness video captured the sounds of several explosions as firefighters battled the flames.

But the interior flames appeared to resist the water hoses and the boat continued sustaining damage. It quickly began taking on water from the hoses as the flames, possibly fueled by a gas source, continued to burn.

The yacht began listing, and by around 10:30 p.m. firefighters were ordered to evacuate the dock. The boat began slowly overturning onto its side and sinking into the water.

There were no major injuries reported. Two people on board exited safely, though one reported a minor cut to the arm.

There was no word on how the fire started. Authorities said it’s possible ammunition was on board the vessel.

The boat is named The Admiral, but the identity of the owner was not immediately available.

Luxury Yacht Sinks After Fireworks Explode, Massive Fire Breaks Out in Wild Video

A luxury yacht sank off the coast of Los Angeles after taking on water when a large haul of fireworks erupted from the deck.

The luxury yacht laden with nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks caught fire shortly before capsizing in Marina del Rey harbor on Wednesday evening. There were two individuals aboard the 100-foot vessel when the blaze erupted, but fortunately, both managed to escape unharmed.

On Thursday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard resumed its environmental cleanup efforts as the yacht leaned on its side. They also conducted air quality tests and addressed water contamination caused by fuel spillage.

On Wednesday at approximately 8:30 p.m., firefighters swiftly responded to the docks at Basin A, where the boat “The Admiral” was engulfed in flames, as reported by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Crews attempted to combat the blaze from both land and water, but containment efforts proved challenging.

Footage Captured the Fireworks Exploding Out of the Yacht as it Sinks

Bystander footage captured fireworks erupting from the boat’s deck. It lit up the sky as firefighters battled to control the raging flames.

Two hours later, the vessel sank swiftly beneath the waterline, and by 11 p.m., it was nearly completely submerged.

Following the sinking, crews initiated a “booming” operation to contain the foam sprayed by firefighters and the fuel that leaked during the incident.

On Thursday morning, a representative from the Coast Guard reported that efforts are focused on containing any hazardous fuel or materials that may have spilled into the water. Additionally, air quality remains a concern due to the boat containing 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

“What we do know is that the vessel capacity was 6,000 gallons. We do know that they fueled up with 4,000 gallons of diesel, but we still do not know how much fuel discharged out into the environment and how much remains still in the vessel,” Lt. Cmdr. Omar Borges, of the U.S. Coast Guard told CBS News .

According to the Coast Guard, current air quality readings indicate that there are no flammable fumes present. They claim the air is safe for local residents to breathe.

A former captain of the Bayesian has described the terrifying obstacles facing those trapped in the cabins as the Bayesian superyacht overturned killing seven.

Stephen Edwards, who captained the Bayesian for five years until 2020, told The Telegraph : “Those who stayed curled up in bed were in the worst situation.

“The storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items,” he said adding he had spoken to traumatised crew members.

“Inside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.”

It came as divers race to retrieve Mike Lynch’s personal hard drives locked in a safe on the ocean floor, according to reports.

Italian newspaper la Repubblica reported that the tech billionaire, whose clients included MI5, the NSA and the Israeli secret service, didn’t trust confidential documents on the cloud and kept two encrypted hard drives in a safe which now lies 49 metres below sea level.

The bodies of those who died after the billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht sunk off the coast of Sicily have been flown back to their families by private jet.

Italian publication Giornale di Sicilia reported post-mortem examinations were completed at a Palermo hospital and the bodies have now been returned.

Divers are searching the sea floor for Mike Lynch’s high-tech hard drives before they can fall into enemy hands reports La Repubblica - Italy’s second-biggest newspaper.

Sources told the paper the disks held: “the great digital archive of the IT entrepreneur whose clients included the British MI5, the American NSA and the Israeli services”.

The Italian newspaper said the “super drives” are protected by “cutting-edge encryption”.

The Sun reported the drives now could be a target for the hostile spy agencies of Russia, China, and Iran as they seek to steal valuable secrets.

Captain gives his account of tragic sinking

Captain James Cutfield previously gave his terrifying account before invoking his right to remain silent.

According to Correire, he told prosecutors: “Seaman Griffiths came to wake me up and told me that there were 20 knots of wind.

“I looked at the instruments and indeed that was the case. I went out immediately and asked them to warn everyone because I didn’t like the situation.”

He said the Bayesian tilted 45 degrees “and remained like that for a bit and then suddenly fell to the right.

“We were catapulted into the sea”.

Seaman Matthew Griffiths, 22, said: “We somehow climbed back up to the bridge and tried to form a human chain to save those who managed to reach that gap from the accommodation deck ... they were struggling on the walls because the boat was lying in the water.

“The first in the chain was the captain who stretched down. He helped everyone, the ladies, the mother with the little girl ... But we were sinking and unfortunately some didn’t make it .”

Mr Griffiths joins fellow Brit Tim Parker-Eaton, 56, and Kiwi skipper James Cutfield, 51, on the official list of those being formally investigated for shipwreck and multiple manslaughter.

Being investigated does not equate to being charged and is a procedural step.

Italian Navy divers have recovered video surveillance equipment from the wreckage of billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht that could explain how it sank.

The British tech tycoon ’s boat had been moored near the port of Porticello on 19 August when it sank during the early hours of the morning . It is now lying 50m below the surface.

Former captain claims Mike Lynch’s wife was always concerned about boat safety

The wife of Mike Lynch, 57-year-old Angela Bacares managed to escape to safety after suffering cuts from broken glass as she went to try and save her husband and daughter, according to la Repubblica.

The newspaper said she told doctors that at 4am, the boat had tilted and she and her husband were woken up.

Former captain Stephen Edwards told The Telegraph, Ms Bacares “always wants to know what is happening and what the crew are doing”.

“She is always the first person to come up to the bridge if she hears us scuttling about up there. That could explain why she was saved and Mike wasn’t.”

Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah were ‘part of a united, vibrant, loving family’

Family friends of Mike and Hannah Lynch have said the father and daughter were part of a “united, vibrant, loving family” – with the teenager remembered as a “diamond in a sea of stars” and the tech mogul as a brilliant storyteller.

Mr Lynch was the creator of software giant Autonomy and had been cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud related to its 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

His daughter Hannah had recently finished her A-levels and was due to study at Oxford University.

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, said: “Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars. Bright, beautiful and always shining.

“What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

“While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

“I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive.”

It is understood Ms Murray was rescued after disaster struck the yacht.

With the Bayesian lying on her side 50 metres underneath the now gentle waters of the Mediterranean, mystery still surrounds how the 56-metre superyacht, sank in the typhoon off the port of Porticello.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles and cave divers are looking to raise the yacht , which experts will examine in the coming days.

“Some had made it to the saloon at this point and they are the ones who survived, as their route outside would have been a little clearer.

“Inside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.

“Cabinets crashed open as the catches were weak, resulting in glassware and crockery falling out. I’m told almost all the furniture broke loose inside the boat.”

Mike Lynch’s wife, along with 14 others, survived and were rescued by a nearby vessel that was unscathed.

Fruit vendors awarded more than $2.8 million after 2022 Woodland Hills attacks

WOODLAND HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Two local street vendors have been awarded more than $2.8 million after a man attacked them in Woodland Hills .

A jury on Wednesday found Daniel McGuire guilty of assault and emotional distress for the 2022 attacks. Video captured the moment McGuire hacked apart one stand and yelled at the vendors to leave.

In one incident, he destroyed a vendor's fruit stand with an axe .

The vendors' attorneys called the verdict a major win that sends a clear message that violence and hate against street vendors will not be tolerated.

A boat was completely destroyed in a massive fire in Marina del Rey.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. - A boat is completely destroyed after exploding in Marina del Rey .

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a call in the 13800 block of Bora Bora Way a little after 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18. 

Firefighters say two people safely got out of a 100-foot-long yacht. Neither were hurt in the massive fire, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

SkyFOX was over the scene around 8:45 p.m. when the boat was engulfed in flames.

A boat was destroyed in a fire in Marina del Rey. It is unknown if people were inside the boat at the time of the explosion.

As of late Wednesday night, officials did not say what caused the boat to catch fire.
