Nautical Cake

  • Prep 1 hr 30 min
  • Total 2 hr 30 min
  • Servings 12
  • Keep Screen On

Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix with pudding
  • Water, oil and egg whites called for on the cake mix box
  • Blue gel food color
  • 1 container fluffy white whipped ready-to-spread frosting

Decorations

  • 14 oz ready-to-use white fondant
  • Blue, red and golden yellow gel food color
  • Lemon juice, if desired
  • White sparkling sugar, if desired
  •   1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease or spray bottoms and sides of 3 (8-inch) round pans with cooking spray. Place 8-inch round piece of cooking parchment paper in bottom of each pan. Grease or spray paper.
  •   2 Make cake mix as directed on box using water, oil and egg whites. Divide batter evenly among 3 bowls (about 1 1/2 cups each). Add different amounts of blue food color to each to make different shades of blue. Stir each color until well blended. Pour 1 bowl of batter into each pan.
  •   3 Bake 18 to 22 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 5 minutes; remove from pans to cooling racks. Remove parchment paper. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  •   4 Using serrated knife, cut rounded top off cakes to make a level surface. Place deepest color cake layer on cake plate, top side up. Spread frosting over top. Stack the next darkest color, top side down; spread top with frosting. Place lightest color on top, top side down. Frost top and sides of cake with remaining frosting. Use metal spatula to give frosting a smooth look.
  •   5 To make the waves decoration, knead 4 oz of fondant to soften. Add blue food color. Knead fondant slightly to create marbleized streaks. If necessary, lightly sprinkle smooth surface and rolling pin with powdered sugar. Roll out fondant to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut parchment paper into wave pattern (see photo). Use wave template to make 12 waves from fondant. Brush lightly with lemon juice on one side of fondant waves and sprinkle with sparkling sugar. Press waves lightly into sides of cake.
  •   6 To make rope, knead 8 oz fondant to soften. Add golden yellow food color. Knead to mix color into fondant. Divide fondant in half; roll out each half into 30-inch long rope. Place 2 rope pieces side by side; press together at one end. Holding the joined end, twist 2 pieces together. Cut 5 inches from end; set aside. Wrap remaining twisted rope around bottom edge of cake; press ends together to secure.
  •   7 Cur parchment paper into boat and buoy patterns. For top of cake, color the following portions of fondant as directed, roll out and use the patterns to make the boat and buoy. Color 2 oz fondant a deep blue color for the boat and sails. Color 1 oz fondant red for the stripes on the mast buoy. Use 1 oz white fondant for the life saver buoy. Place designs on top and side of cake as in photo. Place reserved yellow rope over boat.

Classic Nautical Cake

April 8, 2013 by Carrie Sellman

Get ready to set sail with today’s helping of nautical inspiration.  I’ll admit it.  I am obsessed with any and all things nautical.  I know many of you are too!  There is something so fresh, clean and downright summery about the nautical look.  The crisp red, white and blue color scheme paired with stripes is always a classic.  And I’m especially fond of decorating with woven nautical rope.  Whether wrapped around a hurricane vase or lantern, a little touch of rope adds charm and texture.  So needless to say, I did a rope-loving dance when I saw today’s cake!  Created by Kristin Kirkpatrick , owner of Fat Girl Cakes in Virginia, this design captures all of the great nautical trends.  Bold wide stripes come together with an anchor that is truly golden.  And ropes that you must see to believe.  Let’s take a look at this Classic Nautical Cake !

Nautical Cake by Fat Girl Cakes | TheCakeBlog.com

Kristin of Fat Girl Cakes gives us the scoop on her design:

“Late last year I met with a couple who were planning a nautical-themed wedding.  Since it was my first inquiry using that theme, I spent several hours researching molds, stencils, and motifs that are out there.  While coming up with cake possibilities for them, the one idea I really hoped they would choose was doing a tier covered in fondant rope.  When the couple chose another baker I was heart-broken, not because they went with someone else, but because I couldn’t make that rope tier!”

More from Kristin of Fat Girl Cakes :

“Fast-forward a few months and one of the venues where I am a preferred vendor contacted me to make them a cake for their bridal open house.  The theme… you guessed it… NAUTICAL!  One of the coordinators sent me a picture of the traditional decor and red, navy, and gold striped table linens there were planning on using, and I knew I was finally going to make that rope tier I had been dreaming of.  I ran it by the coordinator to make sure she was on board, and she said to go for it!”

I’m so glad Kristen had the opportunity to bring her rope tier to life.  Because it is incredible!  And the gold gilding on the anchor is such a great addition, providing contrast and a nice metallic pop.

A very special thank you to Kristin Kirkpatrick of Fat Girl Cakes for sharing her Classic Nautical Cake with us today!  Your seaworthy design is just stunning!

Pirate Ship Cake

Let's make a buttercream pirate ship cake with no special tools!

Prepare a single cake or tier cake

You can make this pirate ship design on a single cake or on a two-tier cake. I'm alternating layers of my Very Vanilla and Perfect Chocolate Cake for a two tier cake. The bottom tier is an 8 inch cake and then on top is a six inch cake.

crumb coating a tier cake

For a tier cake, the top cake needs to be on a cake board the same size as that cake. The purpose of this is to support the cake so it doesn't sink into the bottom cake. The reason for it being the same size is so that it's invisible after you frost the cake.

how to stack a tier cake

The taller this cake is the more room you'll have so the bigger you can make your pirate ship. Start by covering both cakes with a crumb coat. This is a thin layer of frosting to trap any crumbs that come off the cake so that they don't get into your final layer of frosting. I'm using my 4 Minute Buttercream to fill and frost these cakes.

Make an ocean cake

I'm turning the bottom cake into an ocean with a very easy and very quick technique. Frost the top of the cake with a light shade of teal or turquoise. To tint buttercream I use gels, which are very concentrated so you only need a drop to make bold colours.

Put this same colour into a piping bag with a petal piping tip. Pipe a ruffle around the top of the cake so that it sticks up above the tope edge. If you don't have a petal piping tip you can just spread this colour straight onto the cake. You'll get all of the beautiful ocean colours, just without the texture.

how to use a petal tip for ruffles

Petal tips look like teardrops and when you pipe through them. The narrow part makes ruffles but the wider part doesn't. For this cake you'll want the wide part of the petal tip or teardrop to point downwards, angled slightly towards the cake. This way, the wider piping will stick to the cake. Point the narrow part upwards and slightly away from the cake, which makes ruffles that look like waves.

how to make buttercream ruffles

I'm adding another drop of gel to my bowl of buttercream and putting that darker colour into the piping bag. Now the waves get darker as the ocean gets deeper, lower down on the cake. The slower you pull the bag and the more you wiggle your wrist, the wavier the piping will be.

This technique is very forgiving! If you need to pause to push the buttercream lower down into the piping bag, when you start piping again the join of the ruffles will disappear into the texture on the cake. It's not a precise technique so have fun with it to create this whimsical effect. You can smooth any messy parts of the piping with an offset spatula.

To hold up the next cake tier you'll need some supports. Use a cake board the same size as the next cake to draw around. This circle will show you where the next cake will sit eventually. Then poke boba straws or dowels into the bottom cake, cutting them to be the same height as that cake. I'm using four straws for this eight inch cake, spaced equally around the cake. Make sure they're at least an inch within the circle you drew so that they're underneath the top cake.

using straws to stack a tier cake

Put this cake in the fridge while you frost the top cake, the one that will have the pirate ship on it.

Frost a pirate ship cake

To create a sky effect use white and blue buttercream. Ideally, you'll have three shades. Spread dollops of those colours onto the cake to almost cover the sides.

watercolour frosting

The crumb coat needs to have set so that these colours don't mix into it. I set my crumb coats by putting the cake into the fridge for 30 minutes. Keep in mind that if the cake is cold from the fridge, you'll need to frost it quite quickly. Otherwise, these blobs of buttercream will chill and set and be difficult to spread. Scrape around the cake with a cake comb or frosting smoother or icing scraper. The colours will blend together and look like a cloudy sky.

watercolour frosting cake

After a few scrapes, spread more buttercream to fill in any indents, where the frosting isn't as thick as on the rest of the cake. Then scrape again until the frosting is smooth. You can leave the top edge uneven or level it with your offset spatula. Put this cake into the fridge for an hour or the freezer for 30 minutes to set the frosting. Now it's ready for the pirate ship!

Decorate a pirate ship cake with homemade stencils

Draw or trace or print out a pirate ship on a piece of paper. Keep it to a simple outline for the best results. Then put a piece of parchment or wax paper on top and trace the brown details only. This will be the hull (the curved part at the bottom!) and the masts. Pencil works best for drawing onto parchment paper because of the non-stick surface.

how to make a stencil for a pirate cake

Then on another piece trace the white details, which are the sails. Onto another piece, trace the black details, which are the pirate flag and the porthole. Finally, trace the skull and crossbones onto another piece.

Now cut out the shapes from each of your pieces of parchment paper. Cut along the outline to leave the outer part intact, which you'll use as a stencil next. Take your time to cut a neat outline because if you cut a jagged line or a wonky shape, that's what you'll end up with on your pirate ship cake.

making stencils for a pirate cake

Each piece of parchment should have an inch or two of paper all around the cut out part of the design. This border will protect the rest of the cake from unwanted smudges of buttercream. The exception is the pirate ship because the boat will sit right at the bottom of the cake so you don't need any paper below it.

pirate ship cake stencil

Take your cake out of the fridge or freezer and press the biggest boat stencil against it. After about a minute some tiny drops of condensation will form on the cake because it's warmer out of the fridge or freezer. Those droplets will help the stencil to stick to the cake. Spread brown buttercream all over the boat shape that you cut out. Spread inwards towards the middle of the cutout shape rather than outwards because that might spread buttercream underneath the parchment paper, causing smudges around the outside of the outline of the shape.

how to use parchment paper stencils on a pirate ship cake

Smooth the brown frosting with an offset spatula or cake comb. Parchment paper and wax paper are great because they're cheap and you can make any shape of stencil you like very quickly. However, because the paper is very thin and flimsy, it's easy for it to stick to the frosting on your offset spatula or cake comb and pull away from the cake. To avoid this, spread gently and use slow movements. If the stencil does pull away, reposition it.

homemade stencils on a pirate ship cake

Peel the stencil off to leave your shape behind. Use a toothpick to gently scrape off any smudges, which works because the blue frosting on the cake has chilled and set so you won't damage it.

Use the edge of your cake comb to score some lines in the buttercream to mark out different sections of the boat and planks of wood. A toothpick is a great tool to mark the shorter ends of the planks and to draw little nails that you see in shiplap. Now put the cake into the fridge for 30 minutes or the freezer for 15 minutes to set this brown frosting.

Press another stencil onto the cake and spread buttercream over that, scraping off the excess to leave a thin layer behind. For portholes, a thin layer looks best because you don't want the windows to look like they're sticking out from the wooden boat. For some shapes like the sails, a thicker layer of buttercream is better because the blue frosting underneath would show through a thin layer of such a light colour of frosting.

Keep your toothpick handy for touch-ups after each stencil.

using a toothpick to make a buttercream cake stencil neater

Put the cake back into the fridge or freezer after each stencil to set that colour before pressing on the next stencil.

How to stack a tier cake

Any time after stenciling on the big brown boat you can stack your cakes if you're making a tier cake. Both cakes need to be cold so that the frosting is firm. Spread some fresh frosting onto the bottom cake within the circle you drew. Then slide an offset spatula or cake lifter underneath the top tier, lifting it on its little cake board. Lower it onto the bottom cake and adjust it to center it.

sailboat themed cake

The cakes need to be cold so that you can touch the frosting without damaging it. Now it's time to cover up the join between the two tiers. Use some of that lightest shade of turquoise from the ocean part of the cake with your petal tip. Hold the wider part of the tip against the bottom of the cake to pipe a wave. You can pipe a few more if there's space on top of the bottom cake.

piping ruffle waves with a petal tip on a pirate cake

Just like with the other ruffles, the more you wiggle your wrist, the wavier your piping will be. I like to start piping at the side of the cake because that's typically the most subtle place to hide the start and finish of each row of piping. Everyone looks at the front of the cake and if you're singing happy birthday and letting someone blow out a candle on the cake, everyone gathered around will be looking at the back of the cake but no one really stares at the side side of a cake!

 pirate ship two tier cake

Finish decorating the pirate ship

You only need a tiny bit of buttercream for the pirate flag and a few drops of black gel. Making a dark gray is fine because the gel will develop and the colour will darken a few shades. Let that set in the fridge before using your final stencil, the skull and crossbones.

skull and crossbones cake

Just like with the white sails, it's a good idea to spread this thickly so it doesn't end up looking gray over the black buttercream underneath. With a thicker layer of frosting the stencil edges do tend to be messier so smooth them with a toothpick.

I forgot to mark the masts on the ship but it's fine to do this either immediately after stenciling, while the buttercream is still soft or after chilling the cake, when the buttercream has set.

This Pirate ship birthday cake will be a HIT at your kid’s next birthday party. Get all hands on deck and set your sails toward the kitchen!

Easy Pirate Ship Cake Ingredients

What you need to decorate the pirate ship, how to make a pirate ship cake step-by-step, decorating the pirate ship chocolate cake, get creative with your pirate ship cake, frequently asked questions, more fun and delicious birthday cakes for kids.

  • Pirate Ship Cake Recipe

This pirate ship cake is where it all began! It is the first post that we ever posted on the site and it became a huge hit among our families. This pirate ship cake is fun, creative, and tastes even better than expected! Make this delicious chocolate cake for your next pirate birthday and you will have all the rave reviews! From baking the cake, frosting it in a few different colors, then decorating it just like a pirate ship turned out over the top amazing! It may look like it took me hours and hours to make but it is easier than you think. Get your baking hat on and let’s make this simple and easy pirate ship cake together with step-by-step instructions to guide you all the way through!

Get ready to think like a pirate and create the best ship to take out on the ocean! We started out using a box cake mix for the chocolate cake and bought store-bought icing to make this even easier. This pirate cake is cut into a ship and ready to be decorated now!

  • Round cakes – Either make a homemade chocolate cake or use a store-bought cake box mix. I used a 9-inch round cake tin that was greased and floured before pouring the cake batter into it. Bake in the oven then set aside.
  • Chocolate icing – Again, make this simple with store-bought icing or you can make a homemade chocolate frosting .
  • White icing – This will blend with the blue food coloring making waves under the ship. Make homemade vanilla frosting or purchase your favorite brand of canister in the baking aisle.
  • Blue food coloring – Liquid or gel food coloring will give the right amount of blue that is needed for the water coloring in the ocean.

Time to be creative and feel the pirate vibe! You will want to think of a treasure chest, treasure map, gold, and all the pirate theme decorations you can think of. Have fun and think outside of the box about what you can use and create within your own home!

  • Pepperidge farm pirouette cookies – These are for the cannons on the side. Cut the cookies into three sections to have six cannons total, three on each side.
  • Hershey candy bars – Unwrap Hershey Bars and place them on top of the cake as the floor of the deck to fit.
  • Plastic pirate figurines – You can find these at a local store or party store. Use frosting as glue to hold down the pirate’s feet in the cake.
  • Wooden skewers – These are for the masts to hold the sails. Having them open looks like they are on the ocean with the wind hitting them.
  • White or black paper for sails – These are easy to make with the skewers going through the poked holes of the paper.
  • Pirate flag – Trace or print the pirate symbol onto white paper for the ownership of the pirate ship.
  • Pirate map – We printed and burned the edges of the map to look more authentic. You can either put this under the cake on the tray or roll it up too.
  • Gold coins – Place the gold coins around the area of the cake. Chocolate gold coins or plastic gold coins work great!

To make it even more realistic, I added a tray that the pirate ship can rest on then added the treasure map and treasure chest that could easily be transported to where the party was happening. Follow these step-by-step ways to make this easy pirate ship cake quickly and easily for your next party!

  • Preparing the cake – Cut both of the cakes in half. You will have 4 semi-circles, but you will only use 3 for the cake. Set 4th aside for extra cake slices. Put frosting on each half and layer them. Wrap in plastic and freeze for 1 hour.
  • Cutting and shaping – Remove cakes from the freezer. Trim off about an inch of the most rounded part of the cake on an angle so the front of the ship is higher than the back of the ship. Turn the cakes upright, as shown.

These are just some ideas to get your creative side started! Add your personal touches to the pirate cake making it your very own!

  • First – Frost the deck of the ship or the top of the cake with a light layer of frosting. Place the skewers on the cake.
  • Deck – Unwrap Hershey bars and place them on top of the cake as the floor of the deck to fit.
  • Boarder – Frost the sides of the cake in one of two ways. You can simply spread frosting on the cake or use a star tip. Use a star tip to put a top border around the top of the cake (ship deck).
  • Masts – Cut 7 sails from the paper, then slip them onto the skewers and pinch them so it looks like they are billowing in the wind.
  • Cannons – For the cannons, cut 2 Pepperidge Farm Pirouette Cookies into three equal sections. Place a candle in the center of each cookie so the wick end is sticking out about half an inch. Push three cannons into each side of the cake. Make sure that the surface on which the cake rests is impervious to wax, as the burning candles will drip.
  • Yarn – Add yarn for the rope around the masts.
  • Pole – For the front bow part (the pole) use a full Pirouette cookie or a pretzel stick. Tie a rope, using jute or yarn, from the end of the cookie to the top of the mast.
  • Pipe – Marble blue food coloring into white icing, making it look like water. Pipe it on with a star tip, like waves, along the bottom of the boat.
  • Pirates – Place pirate figurines on the deck with a little frosting under their feet so they will stick to the deck. Place gold coins around the cake.

Pirate Ship Birthday cake on a pirate map surrounded by gold coins.

Decorate your pirate ship just the way you like it! Go above and beyond or make it simple. Either way the cake is delicoius and the pirate ship is going to be an amazing display for any party!

  • Decorate – This recipe gives you a chance to be creative! You can add plastic pirate figures ,  gold coins , gold sprinkles , or whatever you can to make it the best pirate cake ever!
  • Display – Place the cake on a cookie sheet or board covered by a pirate map.
  • Frosting – If you want to take it to the next level you could add more of the blue frosting around the sides and put plastic sea creature figures! The possibilities are as endless as the open sea! Feel free to leave your ideas in the comments! As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Pirate Ship Cake on a table at a birthday party.

“We made this for a birthday party and oh my gosh was it a hit. Super cute and fun. I loved that it was easy to make!” -Meagen B.

Make sure to follow the package instructions on how long to bake the cake for and at what temperature for 9 inch cake pans. To avoid over cooking and buring the cake you can use a toothpick to stick into the middle of the cake and if it comes out clean, the cake is done. If it has cake batter still on it, bake a few minutes longer.

This is always a common question when it comes to pirate ships. Yes! They were real, however, I am not sure if they continue to be the same type of ship and pirates in these modern times. They have said that there was a pirate ship that was discoverd off the coast of Wellfleet, MA.

  • Cut the cakes in half. You will have 4 semi-circles, but you will only use 3 for the cake. Set 4th aside for extra cake slices.
  • Put frosting on each half and layer them. Wrap in plastic and freeze for 1 hour.
  • Remove cakes from freezer. Trim off about an inch of the most rounded part of the cake on an angle (the bottom of the ship) so the front of the ship is higher than the back of the ship. Turn the cakes upright, as shown.
  • Optional: place cake on a cookie sheet or board covered by a Pirate map.
  • Frost the deck of the ship or top of the cake with a light layer of frosting. Place the skewers (masts) on the cake.
  • Unwrap Hershey Bars and place them on top of the cake (around the masts) as the floor of the deck to fit.
  • Frost the sides of the cake in one of two ways – you can simply spread frosting on the cake or use a star tip. Use a star tip to put a top border around the top of the cake (ship deck).
  • Cut 7 sails (3 inch by 5 inch) from the paper, then slip them onto the skewers (masts) and pinch them so it looks like they are billowing in the wind.
  • For the cannons, cut 2 Pepperidge Farm Pirouette Cookies into three equal sections (so you have 6 cannons). Place a candle in the center of each cookie so the wick end is sticking out about a half an inch. Push three cannons into each side of the cake.
  • Make sure that the surface on which the cake rests is impervious to wax, as the burning candles will drip.
  • Add yarn for the rope around the masts.
  • For the front bow part (the pole) use a full Pirouette cookie or a pretzel stick. Tie a rope, using jute or yarn, from the end of the cookie to the top of the mast.
  • Marble blue food coloring into white icing, making it look like water. Pipe it on with a star tip, like waves, along the bottom of the boat.
  • Place pirate figurines on deck with a little frosting under their feet so they will stick to the deck. Place gold coins around the cake (optional).

Hi, I’m making this cake and don’t understand how the half circles fit together for a solid cake? Please help. Thanks, Viki

You can use dowels or wooden skewers to hold them together. You just stack the two half circles on top of each other and stick them together. Hope this helps!

Sail into summer with these fun Sailboat Cupcakes!

Sail into summer with these fun to make Patriotic Sailboat Cupcakes. These are a great patriotic dessert for your summer parties. Anchors Aweigh!

A nautical theme is perfect for summer celebrations. With July 4th coming up soon, I think these patriotic sailboat cupcakes are just perfect. I got the inspiration to make these from some sweet ‘it’s a boy’ cupcakes I came across at The Faux Martha .

Sail into summer with these fun Patriotic Sailboat Cupcakes!

The instructions provided are to make the sails. For the cupcakes I used a white cake mix and whipped up a batch of my favorite buttercream icing . SpRinKles are a must! I ordered this sprinkles trio from Amazon. I love the bit of yellow mixed in with the red, white and blue. I also used these cute patriotic cupcake liners .

You’re going to be surprised by how simple these sails are to make.

What you’ll need: frosted cupcakes 4 1/2 inch bamboo knot cocktail pics assorted scrapbooking paper craft glue scissors

How to Make a Sailboat Cupcake

Cut the scrapbooking paper into 2 1/2 inch squares. If your cocktail pics are longer or shorter than 4 1/2 inches, adjust accordingly. Just leave enough at the end of the pick to poke into the cupcakes.

Fold each square in half to form a triangle. On one end of the crease snip with your scissors, approximately 1/4 inch. This is where you will slide in the pick. Use the image below as a guide. Run a bead of glue to hold the pick in place and adhere the paper to form a sail.

Whether your tastes skew modern and trendy or you have a penchant for charming beach decor, the sky's the limit when it comes to designing your beach-themed wedding cake.

To help you narrow down the best ideas, we've rounded up 19 beach wedding cakes to inspire your confection. Browse through our favorite beach wedding cake designs below, and share your favorites with your caterer or pastry chef . Ethereal Blue & Gold

Ethereal blue and gold beach wedding cake on bed of greenery

Looking for elegant beach wedding cake inpso? We love how this couple opted for a dreamy blue and gold color palette that's reminiscent of the ocean waves at golden hour. With cascading florals falling from the top of this two-tier creation set atop a bed of green palms, this beautiful wedding cake looks almost too pretty to eat.

Trendy Textures

Large four-tier beach wedding cake with light blue and copper textured layers and round top

Playing with texture is a great way to elevate your beach wedding cake. This modern design features three traditional tiers with a round piece on the top, but the textured layers add depth and dimension. If classic beach decorations feel too kitschy for your preferences, a simple design like this is a great way to emulate a beachy theme.

Marine Motifs

Three-tier light blue beach-themed wedding cake with seashells and starfish

You can't go wrong with marine decor on your beach wedding cake. With a light blue fondant base, clusters of white shells pop on this three-tier confection. If you're planning a destination wedding, these cake decorations would be an appropriate finishing touch on your dessert.

Simple Seashells

One-tier white beach wedding cake with two starfish as cake topper

Your beach wedding cake doesn't have to be an over-the-top spectacle, especially if your big day will be a small and simple affair. Instead, consider opting for a one-tier dessert like this one. With ruffled buttercream frosting and two starfish toppers, this beach-themed wedding cake fits the occasion without look too flashy.

Sea glass accents.

Wedding cake that doubles as reception decor? Yes, please. This blue beach cake looks like a work of art with its hand-painted watercolor base, which is adorned with sea glass-inspired crystals and gems. We have a feeling guests won't be able to take their eyes off a stunning cake like this.

Ocean Palette

Pressed Palms

Trendy beach wedding cake with two white tiers and pressed gold palms

A beach wedding cake doesn't have to feature seashells or a blue and white color scheme. If you're searching for unique cake inspiration, consider this white wedding cake. Dried palm leaves add a hint of tropical flair, perfect for a destination wedding at a warm, summery beach location.

Retro Tropical Fruit Accents

With retro fruit accents reminiscent of Palm Springs circa the 1970s, this semi-naked beach-themed wedding cake is a great idea for couples planning a vintage tropical wedding. (Bonus points if you place your cake on a palm leaf table cloth in front of a framed palm tree photo, as seen here.)

Watercolor Tiers

Four-tier beach wedding cake with watercolor blue cascading flowers

You can find wedding cake inspiration just about anywhere—including your favorite piece of art. If there's a beach photo that particularly speaks to you, ask your caterer to recreate it on your confection. We love how this couple opted for watercolor-inspired cascading sugar flowers on their statement four-tier cake.

Coral Decor

Three-tier blue beach wedding cake with white seashells and coral decor

Bring the essence of the coral reef to your wedding cake with a design that features fondant shells and spiky pieces of coral.

Aqua blue ombré beach-themed wedding cake

Keep it simple with a gradient nautical wedding cake. This couple opted for a bright aqua hue that slowly transitions to white, along with white tropical flowers as decor.

Monochrome White Wedding Cake

Three-tier white beach wedding cake with beach chair cake toppers

If you love to spend your days lounging in the sun on a beach chair, you'll love this cute cake design. With white picket fence pieces, piles of "sand" and two lounge chairs on top, this creative design is a must for beach bums.

Wedding cake toppers have the power to completely transform the look of your confection, which is why we love this cute initial decoration. Plus, when paired with sea glass pieces and a sand-inspired base, this cake is any beach lover's dream come true.

Tropical Florals

Three-tier white beach wedding cake with tropical orchid florals

Discovering the perfect Beach Theme Cake is a creative journey, exploring textures, colors, and flavors inspired by the seaside’s allure.

Finding inspiration isn’t about mimicking another’s work but about tapping into individual creativity, allowing the ambiance of the beach to guide your cake design process. This might mean focusing on elements like sandy hues, oceanic blues, or even the vibrant shades of a beach sunset. The beach’s bounty can also provide unique decorative elements, from seashells to starfish.

Additionally, flavors like tropical fruits or sea salt caramel could draw from the beach setting. This article is here to help ignite your imagination, offering many beach-inspired themes to find the one that resonates with your baking style and vision.

Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a newbie, these ideas will help you create a cake that isn’t just visually appealing but a true reflection of your interpretation of the beach’s captivating essence.

Key Takeaways

  • Beach-themed cakes can incorporate seashells, surfboards, nautical anchors, and tropical islands for a fun and laid-back vibe.
  • Edible decorations like candy seashells, fondant surfboards, and sugar paste starfish can add realism and elegance to the design.
  • Other beach theme cake ideas include sea creatures, underwater adventures, coastal lighthouses, mermaid fantasies, beach ball fun, seaside picnics, maritime shipwrecks, and coral reef explorations.
  • Beach-theme cake designs celebrate the beauty of nature’s ecosystems and transport guests to a world of sun, sand, and salty breezes.

Ocean Waves and Sand Design

You’ll be swept away by ocean waves and sand design that captures the essence of the beach in a deliciously delightful way. This cake idea incorporates wave patterns and sandy textures to create an edible masterpiece reminiscent of your favorite seaside escape.

Start by selecting a color palette reminiscent of the ocean, with varying shades of blue, turquoise, and white. The artful use of buttercream or fondant can help achieve realistic wave patterns that ebb and flow around the cake, creating a sense of movement and freedom.

To create the sandy texture on your beach-themed cake, consider incorporating crushed cookies or brown sugar for a lifelike appearance. This added detail provides visual interest and brings an unexpected crunch to each bite, making your cake even more memorable.

Consider adding seashells made from molded chocolate or marzipan and edible sea creatures like starfish or sea turtles for additional coastal elements. With these creative touches in place, this ocean waves and sand design aim to transport you and your guests to a world where the breeze is salty, the sun is shining bright, and every day feels like paradise.

Seashell Decorations

Beach Theme Cake Ideas Seashell Decorations

Seashell cupcakes are an excellent way to bring oceanic charm to your beach-themed cake. Start by baking your favorite cupcake flavor and then experiment with shell-infused frosting, which can be achieved by mixing crushed seashells into buttercream or whipped cream frosting. This will add an exciting texture and authentic coastal touch to your cupcakes.

You can also create edible seashells using candy molds and chocolate or fondant, placing them atop the frosted cupcakes for a stunning visual effect.

In addition to seashell cupcakes, you can use various natural or edible shells as decorations on the main cake. For a more professional look, consider making sugar paste shells in different shapes, such as starfish, sand dollars, and conches. These can be painted with edible shimmer dust for added realism and elegance.

Alternatively, you could adorn your cake tiers with cascading waves of shell-infused frosting that mimic the natural flow of seawater around these delightful coastal treasures.

Surfboard Motifs

Adding surfboard patterns and beachy textures to your cake can create an eye-catching centerpiece that will transport guests straight to the sun-soaked shores.

Whether you’re hosting a birthday party, bridal shower, or simply celebrating the joys of summer, surfboard-themed cakes are sure to make a splash.

To bring those beach vibes to life on your cake, consider these creative ideas:

  • Hand-painted fondant surfboards: Create custom-designed fondant surfboards in various sizes and colors, then arrange them artfully on top or around the sides of your cake.
  • Surfboard-shaped cookies: Bake sugar cookies in the shape of surfboards and decorate them with royal icing; use these as accents around the base of your cake or even as cupcake toppers.
  • Edible sand: Mix crushed graham crackers or brown sugar with melted butter and press it onto the surface of your cake for a realistic sandy texture.
  • Ocean waves: Use buttercream frosting in different shades of blue to create swirling water patterns along the sides of your dessert.
  • Beach-themed embellishments: Small seashells, starfish, and tropical flowers from gum paste can add extra dimension and flair alongside your surfboard decorations.

Nautical Anchor Inspiration

Anchors aweigh as you set sail on a dessert adventure inspired by nautical anchors, evoking images of sun-bleached decks, salty sea breezes, and the gentle rocking of a boat in calm waters.

A nautical anchor-inspired cake is perfect for any maritime-themed event or to celebrate the sailor’s delight in your life. Begin with a base layer miming the texture of weathered wooden planks, then add fondant or buttercream waves crashing against the hull. Top it off with an intricately crafted anchor supported by rope accents made from edible sugar or natural rope for added authenticity.

For an extra touch of creativity and whimsy, consider constructing a tiered cake with each layer representing different elements of ocean exploration. The bottom tier could be adorned with seashells and starfish, while the middle tier showcases a detailed compass rose design to help guide sailors on their journey. Finally, let a beautifully sculpted anchor dominate the top tier amidst billowing sails.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of frosting or icing works best for replicating the texture of sand on a beach-themed cake.

For a beach-themed cake, the best frosting or icing that mimics sand’s texture might be a combination of buttercream frosting and something like crushed graham crackers, biscuits, or toasted desiccated coconut. The sweetness and texture create an enticing ‘sandy’ effect appealing to both the eyes and the palate.

How can I incorporate beach-themed flavors, such as coconut or pineapple, into the cake itself?

Infusing beach-themed flavors into your cake is as simple as incorporating ingredients like coconut milk or shredded coconut into your batter for a subtle tropical flavor. Or, try pineapple juice or small chunks of pineapple for a surprising burst of tangy sweetness in each bite.

Are there any food-safe materials that create realistic-looking beach-themed cake decorations, such as edible sand or seashells?

For realistic-looking beach-themed cake decorations, you can use crushed cookies, crushed rice crispies, or toasted desiccated coconut to create edible sand. For seashells, consider using white chocolate or fondant molds that can be colored or painted with edible glitter or colors.

What are some creative ideas for displaying or serving a beach-themed cake at a party or event?

Displaying your beach-themed cake at a party can be as fun as creating it. Consider serving it on a platter lined with brown sugar for a sandy effect, adorned with fresh tropical fruits or flowers. You can also place the cake on a wooden or blue stand to mimic a pier or the ocean.

Can I use fresh fruit or flowers as decorative elements on a beach-themed cake, and if so, what types of fruit or flowers would be most suitable?

Fresh fruit and flowers can make beautiful decorations on a beach-themed cake. Fruits like sliced citrus, kiwis, or berries can add color and taste. Edible varieties like pansies, violas, or even hibiscus can provide a lovely touch for flowers. Be sure to use pesticide-free, edible flowers for safety.
