Staniel Cay Cemetery; a funeral is a big occasion on Staniel Cay. The cemetery is quite a focal point to the island from a local’s perspective. Often, the burial ceremony is very family-involved. As wives prepare the food and homes for family and friends coming from other parts of the country, men are busy preparing the burial site. The deceased is sent to Nassau for one to two weeks of preparation before returning to Staniel Cay for the very solemn ceremony.

Staniel Cay Collector’s Items; one of the islands trickiest conflicts is the discarding of ‘junk’. However, as the saying goes, one man’s trash is another’s treasure. Because of this, you will find old parts and pieces and whole sets of machinery such as airplane propellers, tractor engines, and entire vintage vehicles which no longer operate scattered about the island and hidden in fields.

The Wells; being an island, drinkable water is always a concern. In the early 1900’s a few deep groundwater wells were dug and used for decades. Some still stand, some are covered by brush, and others were destroyed when technological advances allowed for Reverse Osmosis purifying of sea water.

The Ultimate Staniel Cay Guide

11/25/2021 by Kristin Addis 2 Comments

Imagine a little island of only 120 people, where everyone waves to you, the water is baby blue, and you’re a stone’s throw away from the original swimming pigs of Big Major Cay.

Staniel Cay is a little island in the Exumas of the Bahamas that’s full of character and a great jumping off point not just for the pigs, but for grottos, cuddling with nurse sharks, sea turtles, iguanas that live on the sand, and even an underwater piano. Here are my favorite things to do there, plus where to stay and what to eat when on Staniel Cay:

Table of Contents

Things to do:

Rent a golf cart and explore:.

staniel cay yacht club history

Staniel Cay is small, and though you could walk it, most people opt for a golf cart since it can get HOT during the day, and they’re fun to drive anyways.

I had actually never driven a golf cart before trying on Staniel Cay, but it was a good place to learn. It’s not like there’s any traffic to speak of on the roads, and if you manage to get lost, I’ll be impressed! The golf cart gives you the freedom to drive yourself to the beaches and to dinner, and it’s how most people choose to get around the island. Remember to drive on the left!

You can rent golf carts here (affiliate link).

Pirate Beach

staniel cay yacht club history

This was my favorite beach on Staniel Cay, with white sand, baby blue water, and the perfect conditions for a floating session. It’s easy to get to, nestled on the north side of the island. Just follow G&B highway almost to the end, turning right down a dirt road just before you reach it. I used Maps.me (a free map smartphone app) to navigate while I was there and found it easily.

Keep in mind there will be a lot less beach at high tide, which is dependent on the moon phase.

Sunset at the Yacht Club

staniel cay yacht club history

An institution on Staniel Cay, the Yacht Club is one of the only places to eat on the island, and is a favorite hangout spot of most visitors. Chances are good that while you’re staying on the island, you’re going to eat here at least once. My recommendation is catching the sunset there, as it is perfectly situated facing west.

There’s a nice beach just before you reach the Yacht Club as well, where I saw a ray fully breach out of the water! There are nurse sharks nearby as well.

The Swimming Pigs Tour

staniel cay yacht club history

This is what you probably came to Staniel Cay to see – the swimming pigs ! I found the experience to be delightful. We had such an awesome boat captain, Dave with 3N’s Exuma Vacations, who seemed to have a special relationship with them. He’s even trained one to stand up for treats!

The pigs really do swim right over to your boat, and you can get in the water with them and swim around, which I did! They were adorable, and much more open to pets and belly rubs than most other pigs I have met. There are also babies that your guide will likely bottlefeed and maybe even give you the opportunity to try as well.

There are touristy things that sometimes don’t live up to the hype, but this really did for me. Where else in the world can you see swimming pigs in perfectly blue, clear water? You can book it here.

Snuggle Nurse Sharks

staniel cay yacht club history

The swimming pigs tours almost always include the nurse sharks, too. You’ve probably also seen famous photos of people floating with the nurse sharks in the Exumas. These sharks are habituated, and have been for decades. They are used to tourists swimming in the water with them, and are so docile you can even stroke them and hug them!

That said, they are still sharks, so please respect them and watch your fingers when you’re interacting with them. Your guide will most likely bring along fish treats to attract them over. Even if you’re not comfortable getting in the water, you can watch them from the dock above.

A word to the wise: While DSLR cameras are welcome elsewhere on the tour stops mentioned in this post, you’re only allowed to take photos and film with a phone at the sharks.

Visit the Sand Bar

staniel cay yacht club history

Only visible at certain times of day, the Sandbar will be a logical stop between the nurse sharks and the pigs on a day tour. If you have a drone, this is the place to fly! You get nice layers of color as the sand fades to dark blue channels for the water to flow through. Since you can’t fly anywhere on Staniel Cay due to the proximity to the airport, I liked the opportunity of being able to fly on the sandbar.

But even if you don’t have a drone, the perfectly white sand set amongst a multicolored blue backdrop makes for beautiful photos!

Sea Aquarium

staniel cay yacht club history

This stop has a small area that has lots of little, colorful fish and nice corals for a quick snorkel.

I thought the corals were particularly nice, with lots of sea fans, parrotfish, and sometimes even turtles, if you’re lucky.

En route, ask your captain to stop by the plane wreck if you’re interested. It’s shallow enough to be viewed from the surface.

Thunderball Grotto

staniel cay yacht club history

The Thunderball Grotto will probably be your first or last stop of any boat tour out of Staniel Cay, and entry and exit all depends on the tides. The current can sometimes be strong, but if you’re a strong swimmer and able to hold your breath and swim down into the cave, you’ll be just fine.

There’s a variety of fish inside, with several entry and exit points that emit light underwater. There are little bats inside too, though they’ll likely be sleeping when you visit.

Around noon, you can even get sun beams shooting into the cave, which would be amazing to see!

See the Sea Turtles

staniel cay yacht club history

While the pigs, sharks, grotto, and sand bar are all part of the usual tour out of Staniel Cay, you can opt for something a little different heading in the other direction. If you’ve always wanted to swim with sea turtles, you can get the chance on Farmer’s Cay.

Like most of the animal attractions in the Exumas, a local guide takes their favorite food — conch — out into the water to attract them.

I’m not sure how I feel about feeding wildlife, but I also appreciate that this is how many animal interactions around the world are done, from shark swimming, whether in a cage or the deep ocean, to attracting fish when snorkeling. The same is true of feeding birds when out hiking, or, honestly, putting out a bird feeder in the backyard. Everyone has to decide for themselves how they feel about it, but I at least want you to go into the experience with open eyes. Like the nurse sharks, these guys seem habituated.

The Underwater Piano

staniel cay yacht club history

About 15 minutes beyond where you swim with the sea turtles, there’s an underwater piano with a mermaid hanging out next to it. This is also not part of the typical tour, but if you get a group of friends together and get your own private boat, this is a pretty cool one to stop by and is only about 15 or so feet down in the water.

This work of art, called the Musician, was commissioned by David Copperfield who owns an island nearby. It was created by Jason DeCaires Taylor and intended it to be a surprise for the few private guests of the island, as well as day visitors like me. Bonus – since it’s not on the usual tour, nobody else was around.

Iguanas on the Beach

staniel cay yacht club history

On your way back to Staniel Cay, why not another animal interaction? We did everything mentioned here from the pigs onwards in one day, and it felt so full of wonderful animal experiences, I found myself appreciating how much variety and abundance there is in the Exumas.

These iguanas mostly survive off of berries and greens found on the island, and have no natural predators. Like the pigs, they’re cared for and looked after by official staff, living out most of their days happily on the sand.

Where to Stay:

staniel cay yacht club history

I stayed at EMBRACE Resort while I was on Staniel Cay, and it’s great for many reasons – it’s local, Bahamanian woman founded, owned, and operated, the central location is great, and it’s affordable.

While there are vacation rentals and a few other options on Staniel Cay, I loved the vibe of EMBRACE. My bungalow was adorable, with my own fridge, a big jetted tub, and a big bed all for me. They would also bring by little treats every now and then, and really made me feel welcomed and at home.

There’s also a pool, easy golf cart rental and parking, and discounts on the tours mentioned above when you stay with them. They also offer COVID antigen testing onsite, which makes getting back home easy!

They have several different room types, including options with multiple rooms and full kitchens. You can check out the options here.

Where to Eat:

There’s only one major restaurant on Staniel Cay – the Staniel Cay yacht club. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. During the days, it can get quite busy with tour groups coming in to eat lunch, and for dinner you’ll want to book ahead of time for the multi course meals, which were delicious.

That said, Carole at Big Dogs restaurant makes fantastic local food. Each day there are several options like chicken, cornish hen, or my choice while I was there – oxtail. It comes with sides like rice, cole slaw, potato salad, and veggies. Ask at your accommodation if they can call her to place an order. Orders must be placed by 10:30am to eat at noon each day. This is true, home-cooked eating and I LOVED it.

Getting There:

Staniel Cay is about a 30-minute flight from Nassau. I flew Flamingo Air on a little plane and enjoyed the view.

You’ll still fly out of the international airport, heading to the domestic side where you’ll see Flamingo Air on the far left. Keep in mind the schedule seems to be flexible, so try not to leave check-in to the last minute. For help booking, you can ask your accommodation. EMBRACE handled my booking for me and even called me to let me know when my flight time moved up.

Staniel Cay was a little slice of paradise to me. I loved the friendliness, the small-island vibe, the beautiful beaches, and especially the boat tours. There’s really so much to see out there, and if you love animals and super clear water, you’ll love the Exumas.

It is the main transportation and tourism hub for the northern stretch of the Exuma islands.

There are 365 islands in the Exuma chain, with Staniel Cay in the centre of a chain of small islands stretching 100 miles southeast of Nassau . They are flanked by Exuma Sound to the east with deep water reefs. The cay is less than a mile square and it is the home to about eighty full-time residents. Although Staniel Cay is small, it has the basic needs a tourist might need. It has a church, library, post office, three small retail stores and marine supply store. There are many different beaches to be enjoyed on the island. If you are seeking solitude then the rule is; if someone is already occupying a beach, then just go to the next one.

Staniel Cay is protected by the Bahamas National Trust so it is required for tourist to stop by the main entrance of the island and not go off exploring on their own, unless they have been staying on the island.

Getting to Staniel Cay is easy. Visitors to the island arrive by both sea and air. If arriving by air many visitors have departed from either Fort Lauderdale or Nassau.

The airport is served by several airlines.

  • Dove Wings , ☏ +1-242-359-1491 .
  • Flamingo Air , ☏ +1-242-377-0364 .
  • Golden Wings Charter , ☏ +1-242-377-0039 .
  • LeAir Charter , ☏ +1-242-377-2356 .
  • Take Flight Air Charters , ☏ +1-242-362-1877 .

Since the island is very small, it is very easy to get around whether is by foot or by golf cart which can be rented on the island. However, most of the major sightseeing destinations are on other nearby islands, so you will need to hire a tour or charter a boat to get to them.

Staniel Cay its known for the Thunderball Grotto. The Thunderball Grotto is one of the most outstanding snorkeling attractions in the Bahamas. It is also known for being the locations of movies such as Thunderball, Never Say Never Again and Splash. You can only get to it by boat, and have to swim to get inside. For more on Thunderball Grotto and other tourist destinations around Staniel Cay, see the Exuma article.

Staniel Cay’s main focus is to make sure every person that visits the island leaves wanting to stay much longer. When it comes to recreation and activities all water activities are encouraged. Whalers, snorkeling, and kayaks rides are always on a “weather permitting” basis. Unfortunately, once equipment has been rented, no refunds are given due to weather conditions.

Staniel Cay offers a variety of activities for everyone. Besides its different beaches, the island offers scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, boating, fishing, golf carts and more.

  • Many tourists enjoy the Thunderball Grotto for its “natural fishbowl” once the tide is low, many get to experience the beautiful corals and amazing sea life.
  • Staniel Cays marine also offers a renovated marina, fuel, electricity, fresh water, ice, bait and a dock to accommodate boats and yachts.
  • Staniel Cay also provides nightly entertainment through their local band who have been playing for several years.
  • Staniel Cay holds church services during the week and a Sunday service which is very popular among the locals, who religiously attend.

Staniel Cay provides visitors with a choice of three restaurants, the Yacht club, Thunderball and the Happy People restaurant.

  • Staniel Cay Yacht Club . Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in the yacht club everyday, a combination of Bahamian and Continental Cuisine. It also has a bar. Located inside the yacht club, great service and a great time to meet people and enjoy every second on the island.
  • Big Dogs , ☏ +1 242-355-2111 . Here you can have a drink and swap stories. ( updated Feb 2021 )

On Staniel Cay specific extra charges may be applied to the base accommodation rates. A 6% Bahamas Out Island Promotion Board levy is charged as well as ten percent Ministry of Tourism Hotel Tax and a 5% housekeeping gratuity.

  • The Staniel Cay Yacht Club ( The Cottages ). 9 cottages with a water and sunset views. It also offers an eighteen-slip marina, a 3000 ft airstrip. The restaurant and island bar have been named by Jimmy Buffet as one of the “Ten Great Places for a Waterside Drink”. All cottages include appliances such as air conditioning, a coffeemaker and a refrigerator inside. They do not provide any cooking facilities. The cottages do not have individual telephones or television, but phone, fax, TV and internet service are available at the club house, located in the Yacht Club. Smoking is not permitted inside the cottages. Pets are also not permitted. The Staniel Cay Yacht Club has been part of the island since 1956.

Staniel Cay is protected by Bahamas National Trust, it is prohibited to touch, hurt, or eat any creatures or other wild life.

Boating trips to Pig Island as well as Lizard island are offered or travelers are able to rent boats and go explore on their own. Both islands are located adjacent to Staniel Cay. The left over food from the restaurants at Staniel Cay is saved and used to feed the pigs at Pig Island.

The Staniel Cay Yacht Club and surrounding Exuma islands are featured in the music video for  Timber,  a song by the rapper  Pitbull  featuring  Ke$ha . The song was released on October 7, 2013 as the lead single from the EP album,  Meltdown.

American Way

Pigs In Paradise by Hillary Richard Sept. 2013  I sailed around a rocky corner of Big Major Cay and watched with anticipation. The sun-bleached rocks blended in with the white-sand beach. An overgrowth of deep-green palm trees and shrubbery was the only thing breaking up the beautiful blues of the Caribbean Sea and sky. Where were they?

1,000 Places to See Before You Die

The Exumas and Staniel Cay, Bahamas —   Page 1063  The Staniel Cay Yacht Club is a perfect home base for access to the Exumas Land and Sea Park and other attractions, like Thunderball (a beautiful marine cave excellent for snorkeling and named for the 1965 James Bond movie shot there), and friendly swimming pigs (they paddle out to greet boaters who often bring them food).

Caribbean Travel & Life

Staniel Cay and the Out Islands, Bahamas —   Written by: Dave Herndon —   December 2010  In the shallow waters of the Bahamas’ Out Islands, local culture runs deep. The Out Islands are also known as the Family Islands, and I’m going in search of the family secrets.

Seven affordable, under-the-radar beach destinations —   January 2009  Most of the action on Staniel Cay centers around the friendly Staniel Cay Yacht Club, where yachters and landlubbers alike stay, dine, and congregate. Here you can rent 13- and 17-foot boats (from $95 per half day) which will allow you to cruise to some of the uninhabited islets nearby, see marine life like nurse sharks, and visit with the famous “swimming pigs” of Big Major Cay, which paddle out to sea in hopes of getting a handout from sailors.

National Post

An imbiber’s guide to the Bahamas —   November 2008  I don’t know if it’s the laid-back decor of the clubhouse at the heart of this unpretentious resort, the down-to-earth staff or the mix of patrons (folks who stay in the brightly painted cottages, boaters who dock at the marina and locals from the tiny village nearby), but there is something about it that makes you want to park yourself on a barstool and never leave. It might be that owner David Hocher, whose family bought the place when he was just a kid, knows that nothing grand or contrived – other than the great food, service and drink – is required to ensure people fall in love with his little corner of the universe.

Vanity Fair

Fanfair ~ Bahamas Bliss —   November 2008  Daydreaming about swimming and snorkeling in one of the world’s largest barrier reefs? What about catching fish for dinner, shopping at high-end boutiques for embroidered caftans, curling up on a chaise and watching a favorite old movie in a private outdoor theater, or playing golf on an Ernie Els – designed golf course amid bougainvillea blooms and fresh salt air? If so, the Bahamian archipelago, which is made up of 700 tiny islands, is for you.

Outside Traveler

The Bahamas’ Out Islands offer a warm welcome and a quick island fix —   Written by: Michael Roberts —   Special Edition ~ Winter 2006  Staniel Cay, which sits in the central stretch of the Bahamas’ sparsely populated Exuma island chain, is less than two miles long and home to some 80 permanent residents. Thanks to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, its also an ideal getaway for adventure travelers with only a long weekend to spare. Less than two hours after boarding your flight in Florida, you’ll be an honorary islander.

Bahamas & Caribbean Pilot’s Guide

On the Cover — 2006 Staniel Cay has been a favorite destination of pilots and boaters for years, and for very good reasons. Ideally located in the middle of the gorgeous Exuma island chain, there are many small islands to fly and boat, and clear, turquoise waters for great fishing, diving, and snorkeling. The Staniel Cay Yacht Club has been catering to pilots as well as boaters for years, and they’re good at it. There are a variety of comfortable accommodations and a lively bar and restaurant. They have rental boats so you can snorkel Thunderball Grotto, and an underwater cave with thousands of fish – you shouldn’t miss it.

Southern Boating

Sunfish Nationals ~ Staniel Cay Hosts Event for First Time in Exumas —   Written by: Julie Charles —   November 2005  For the first time ever, the Bahamas Sunfish National Championship set sail in the Exuma Islands September 10-11, drawing a record number of sailors to race in the picturesque waters of Staniel Cay. For an area already steeped in the sailing tradition of Bahamian sloop racing, the Sunfish regatta adds valuable experience in one-design racing for local sailors to hone their competitive edge.

Miami Herald Travel

Swine Stroke ~ In Bahamas, pigs don’t fly ~ but they do swim —   Written by: Jane Wooldridge —   Fall 2005  For almost 50 years, Staniel Cay Yacht Club in the Bahamas has been a fave forget-the-shoes boaters’ haven. Thanks to direct flights from Fort Lauderdale, it’s not just for sailors anymore. The club now has a small pool and a few bright cottages, delightful one- and two-room spaces facing the sea.

Nassau Guardian

Staniel Cay Regatta – A Sailing Success  Staniel Cay, Exuma – Less than an hour by small plane from Nassau but a million miles from the traffic jams, cruise ships and noise of the capital. For many Bahamians, the Yuletide season was a time to get back to the islands and back in touch with what makes them beautiful – the sea and the people.

General Aviation News

The Ins and Outboards of the Exumas —   2003 Annual  A peripatetic island escape begins at quiet Staniel Cay in the center of the Exuma chain. Book one of the Staniel Cay Yacht Club’s snug pastel cottages – each comes with a 13-foot Boston Whaler power boat – in advance. Then spend a week day-tripping your way around these narrow, close-together islands, some barely the size of a major league pitching mound, others large enough to support a fishing village, a beach resort, and a couple open-air bars serving conch fritters and Kalik beer. Don’t worry about your sketchy navigational skills – these are nearly idiot proof cruising waters. You need only your eyes to figure out how to get to your next anchorage.

Yin & Yang —   August 2002  A 1200 mile heavy-weather cruise reveals the good and the bad of cruising on a power catamaran. The day was filled mostly with fishing, reading, good tunes and napping on the expansive deck. She sliced quietly through the water at 16 knots, and we remained in relaxation mode all the way to Staniel Cay. For this type of cruising, the cat was tough to beat

Story and photography by George Sass, Jr. —   August 2001 Technicolor Dream. If you cruise the Bahamas looking for a laid-back respite, Staniel Cay is it. Some of the best (and worst) cruising advice flows from fellow cruisers. The conversation usually starts with what a rarity good service is, then covers a few good sea stories and, finally, some favorite cruising destinations. This is how I found out about Staniel Cay.

13 Best Things to Do in Staniel Cay

by Chris | Feb 15, 2024 | Local Activity Guide | 0 comments

staniel cay yacht club history

Turquoise waters and white sand beaches beckon visitors to the Bahamas year after year. While Nassau is great for those wanting a fast-paced trip full of the city’s amenities, those searching for a laid back beach vibe look a bit further south to the Exuma Cays. It’s here you’ll find the stuff of postcards and low-key island living.

Staniel Cay is the postcard destination. Known for its white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters, this small island is the very picture of Bahamian life. And while you could easily spend your entire trip relaxing on the beach and gazing out into the sea, you’ll also find a surprising amount of activities for an island that’s only about a mile in length.

To help you plan your trip, we’ve rounded up the very best things to do in Staniel Cay. All you need to do now is plan a flight, book your Lazy Bay Villa , and set your sights on relaxation!

1. Explore Staniel’s Beaches

staniel cay yacht club history

Of course, the main objective of any tropical vacation is to log lots of time on the shore. Spending a full day beach hopping on Staniel Cay is a day well spent. While the shoreline may seem short on a map, you’ll find several Instagram worthy beaches to visit on your trip.

Pirate’s Trap Beach

Legend has it that this beach, located on the island’s northern end, was once used by pirates to lure unsuspecting ships into hidden traps. It’s hard to imagine those days when visiting this beautiful and secluded cove. This spot is the perfect place to go paddleboarding or take out a kayak.

Staniel Cay Yacht Club Beach

This beach is located on the grounds of the Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Here you can grab a meal, and then take a leisurely stroll around the shoreline. You can even order food and have it delivered to you, allowing you to picnic while soaking up your surroundings.

Ocean Beach

Situated on the eastern side of the island you’ll find Ocean Beach. This beach is surrounded by rocky bluffs, creating a beautiful backdrop. You’ll find it the perfect place to listen to waves crash on the rocks nearby while relaxing in the sand with a good book.

Ho Tai Beach

This beautiful beach is located on an inlet on the southeastern coastline of Staniel Cay. It’s a great place to spend the day at the beach and even offers amenities like picnic tables and a volleyball net.

Southern Beaches

These beaches are mostly adjoined to private homes. This means they are largely inaccessible to the public. However, there is at least one small access point where you can take a dip in the crystal blue waters.

2. Rent a Golf Cart and Explore the Island

Perhaps the easiest way to get around Staniel Cay is via golf cart. These compact, motorized vehicles are eco-friendly and fun to drive. You can explore the village of Staniel Cay easily, traversing the entire island in a mere five minutes!

You’ll find plenty of options for golf cart rentals that can accommodate anywhere from 2-6 people. These battery-powered, open-air vehicles allow you to experience the stunning scenery of the island while making all the island’s attractions and restaurants easily accessible.

3. Relax in the Comfort of your Vacation Rental

staniel cay yacht club history

Most people come to the Cays in search of one thing missing in their daily lives; the utter peace and relaxation of island life. There’s no better way to experience it than in your Staniel Cay Rental .

This rental company offers a variety of accommodations from quaint bungalows overlooking a beautiful lagoon to larger vacation homes capable of accommodating more guests. Each of their properties offer both luxury and comfort and are fully stocked with all of the amenities you need including fast wifi. You’ll find plunge pools at the villas and a pool at most of the other properties, giving you plenty of time to relax in the waters and enjoy the views.

4. Catch a Sunset at Staniel Cay Yacht Club

staniel cay yacht club history

When you’re looking for a dining experience that showcases the culinary delights of the Bahamas, you’ll want to head to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club Restaurant. Located on the northwestern end of Staniel Cay, overlooking the rest of the West Indies, the Yacht Club is known for its picturesque, serene setting and amazing views.

At the Yacht Club you’ll find a fine dining option in their Sea Level Dining room. Here you can enjoy artfully crafted dishes by candlelight while taking in views of the beautiful Exuma blues. Reservations are required for dinner and seating is limited.

You’ll also discover more casual dining experiences at the Captain’s Lounge and The Deck . These are more laid back venues with equally delicious food options but very different settings. The Captain’s Lounge is ripe with island history, serving as the original dining room for the Staniel Cay Yacht Club since 1956. The Deck allows you to dine al fresco while taking in the scenic beauty of the area.

This part of the island is well known for its beautiful sunsets, so time your meal with the setting sun for an extra treat!

5. Have a Beer with the Locals at Big Dogs

When you’re wanting a true local experience, head to Big Dogs Bar and Grill. This small restaurant is one of the only other spots to eat on the island. It offers delicious Bahamian fare like Chicken Souse and is the perfect spot to get a true taste of the Bahamas.

While you’re there, be sure to grab a couple of beers and chat with the locals. Sometimes the best travel guides are locals with insider tips about places to see on the island.

6. Hire a Boat for a Fishing Excursion

staniel cay yacht club history

At Staniel Rentals, our experts are happy to help you plan the fishing excursion of your dreams. You can go offshore fishing, deep sea fishing, and even spearfishing. Our experienced captains know how to put you on the big fish.

Our fishing charters are 6 hours in length and include a captain who knows the best spots to fish. Our crew will also help you with your tackle and bait and even help you clean your catch at the end of a successful day. We also offer boat tours.

7. Go Scuba Diving with Staniel Cay Adventures

staniel cay yacht club history

If you’ve always wanted to give scuba diving a try, there’s no better place to do it than Staniel Cay. You can book a dive trip with Staniel Cay Adventures and explore the underwater world and marine life surrounding this scenic cay. Don’t be surprised if you encounter a sea turtle or sting ray relaxing in its natural habitat.

All trips are guided by certified instructors who offer first class instruction before the dive and guide you step by step as you take to the seas. They’ll both assemble and disassemble your equipment for you and take care of everything afterward. You’ll even get to indulge in a post dive snack and dry off with a fluffy, warm towel. Staniel Cay Adventure’s dive team strives to provide a boutique dive experience for their guests.

8. Visit Thunderball Grotto

staniel cay yacht club history

If you’re a fan of spelunking, Staniel Cay offers a unique excursion you will not want to miss. Just off its coastline, you’ll find an intricate underwater cave system known as Thunderball Grotto. Named after the James Bond movie, this grotto is an underwater network of limestone caverns and chambers.

At the entrance to the grotto, you’ll also encounter a vibrant coral reef brimming with colorful fish and corals. As you explore this underground oasis, don’t be surprised when you stumble upon secret entrances and exits.

9. Swimming with Pigs

staniel cay yacht club history

Perhaps one of the most unique experiences you can have in the Cays is swimming with the pigs of Pig Beach. Located just north of Staniel Cay in Big Major Cay, these friendly bovines love to take a dip in the salty sea.

Local guides advise visiting early in the morning to see the swimming pigs at their most energetic and have the best chance of them hopping in the sea with you. Still, it’s not uncommon to arrive just to find the pigs lounging on the beach and basking in the sun. These aquatic pigs are just a 10 minute boat ride from Staniel Cay. You can book a pigs tour or a whole day tour around the Cays if you don’t want to rent a boat.

10. Visit Compass Cay and Swim with Nurse Sharks

staniel cay yacht club history

If you want to swim with something slightly less cute, you can head north of Big Major Cay to Compass Cay. Here, you are able to take a dip with some of the most notorious predators of the sea: sharks.

Never fear, though, the nurse sharks you share the turquoise waters with are friendly and well accustomed to human interaction. Visitors of all ages enjoy swimming amongst these calm creatures. While they can grow up to 14 feet, they remain relatively small for sharks. They are not aggressive hunters and use their small blunt teeth to suck on rather than bite their prey,

11. Walk Among the Iguanas

staniel cay yacht club history

After you’ve swam with the pigs and cuddled some sharks, head to Bitter Guana Cay’s Iguana Beach. Here, you’ll find Bahamian Rock Iguanas walking along the shores, an ode to their prehistoric predecessors.

This island is home to about 5,000 of these creatures. These reptiles can grow up to four feet in length and live up to forty years. The iguanas of this island are a protected species as their numbers have been fastly dwindling in the wild.

12. Discover the Ruins of Pablo Esoabar’s Plane Wreck

staniel cay yacht club history

Perhaps one of the more dramatic excursions off the coast of Staniel Cay, is paying a visit to the ruins of the plane wreck with a seedy story. Notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar was en route to deliver illegal cargo to the United States when the plane missed its landing mark and crashed into a sandbar surrounding Norman’s Cay. The skeleton of this sunken plane remains a popular snorkeling site for visitors.

Today, nature has moved into the bones of this plane, becoming a reef for the tropical fish that live in the area. The area is shallow, approximately 10 feet deep, and perfect for snorkeling. It’s a short 30-45 minute boat ride from Staniel Cay and well worth the trip.

13. Sandbar at Pipe Creek

Pipe Creek Sandbar, located in Pipe’s Cay, is another quick day trip off the coast of Staniel Cay. Accessible by a 15-30 minute boat ride, this sand bar is a popular excursion for visitors in search of a remote escape. The incredibly shallow channels allow you to walk far out into the sea while taking in the beauty of the native marine life swimming at your feet.

It’s important to note that due to the shallow waters, this area is not suitable for larger boats. Before visiting, be sure to learn more about the tide schedule for the day, especially noting when low tide occurs.

Stay and Play Around Staniel Cay

While your Staniel Cay vacation should primarily be centered around living your best island life, you certainly won’t have to worry about being bored here. So get ready to get yourself in an island state of mind and book that vacation today!
