Sailboat Chronicles: The White Bear Yacht Club and More

Sails billow across the waters of White Bear Lake like windblown banners of royalty. This idyllic summer scene dates back to the 1800s, when the railroad reduced the three-hour dusty, wagon ride from St. Paul to White Bear Lake to a 20-minute trip. A resort boom followed, as thousands of vacationers flocked to large resorts that popped up all along the lakeshore. Naturally, these summer sojourners wanted to get out on the water. Soon, sailboats dotted the lake like flocks of elegant birds alighting on the water’s surface.

Local boat builders flourished. Most of them built keelboats with lots of weight in the keel to prevent capsizing, but they were slower and not as well suited for inland sailing. In the 1890s, boat builder J.O. Johnson, became enamored with a new sailboat design known as a flat-bottom scow. The first scow built and raced by Johnson in 1900 astounded the competition by flying past all other sailboats for numerous wins. The incredible speed of scow boats was a game-changer in the sport of sailing.

Johnson parted ways with employer Amundson Boat Works and launched Johnson Boat Works, which was dedicated to the production of the flat-bottom scow. Johnson developed many different types of scows, but the fastest and most impressive is his original 38-foot design, commonly referred to as an A scow. The large sailboat typically requires a seven-person crew, and is thrilling to watch race across the lake.

The formation of the White Bear Yacht Club in 1889 and other organizations dedicated to inter-lake racing fueled a local passion for sailing. But a 1932 storm destroyed most A scows on White Bear Lake; the Depression made rebuilding the fleet unfeasible, and Johnson Boat Works survived the era by building powerboats. Recreational sailing remained on White Bear Lake, but the expense to restore and maintain any remaining A boats made them unpractical. The A boat fell out of favor, their splendor seemingly lost forever.

A Rebirth In 2000, Dellwood resident Fletcher Driscoll’s family included 18 people. Driscoll owned a 28-foot E boat, but says it was like a log in the water whenever his entire family attempted to board. “It was sad to have a family party and not be able to take everybody out on the boat,” says Driscoll. “So I decided to restore an older A boat.” When that happened, excitement sparked among many lake-area residents. Before long, Driscoll had a list of more than 50 friends and neighbors requesting a ride.

white bear lake sailboats

A year later Driscoll received a call. The last wooden scow built by Johnson Boat Works in 1963 for John S. Pillsbury was for sale. “I was sure it was too old and in bad shape,” says Driscoll. But the boat was well maintained; Driscoll bought it and, with the help of other skippers, spent a year restoring the boat to its former glory.

Driscoll figured he needed a third A boat to have races, so he added a used fiberglass A boat to his fleet and held his first A boat race in 2004. “There was more interest in these sailboats than I originally thought,” says Driscoll. Today, his A boat fleet stands at 11, the largest in the world. Driscoll gets frequent phone calls from lakefront homeowners asking when the beautiful A boats will race. “Some schedule dinner parties around sailboat races because it’s just so magical to watch,” says Driscoll.

A Family Affair White Bear Lake has remained home to enthusiasts of smaller scows and keelboats, and the joy of sailing can be discovered at virtually any age. Craig Drake began sailing at 42 years old, shortly after he and wife Gloria enrolled their children in sailing lessons at White Bear Yacht Club. “Our kids fell in love with sailing,” says Drake, “so much so that they would note summer wind conditions and tell us whenever it was a great day to sail.” This encouraged Craig and Gloria to take adult sailing lessons.

white bear lake sailboats

But it was a winter visit to the boat show that sealed the sailing deal for the Drake family. “Our kids also enjoy wakeboarding and waterskiing,” says Drake. “We just assumed they’d want a speedboat, but they were enamored with sailboats from White Bear Boat Works.”

Today, the Drake family owns a 22-foot Capri keelboat named Lucky Duck and they’ve been sailing together on White Bear Lake for the past 10 years. They also have two smaller one-person laser sailboats. The Drakes race with Black Bear Yacht Racing Association, where Craig says other sailors are very helpful to beginners.

Over the years his kids have sailed in regattas with Twin Cities Youth Sailing and the high school sailing team. Last year, Lucky Duck took second place in one of Black Bear Yacht Racing Association’s series of races. “I love that sailing is a sport you can do all through life,” says Drake. “I also love the blend of art, science and strategy involved in sailboat racing.” The Next Generation of Sailors Sailors agree it isn’t necessary to live on a lake to enjoy sailing. The Drakes didn’t grow up on a lake and didn’t live on a lake when their initial love of sailing began. Jason Brown, owner of White Bear Boat Works, says there are many opportunities in the White Bear area for those who have never sailed before.

When Brown was 6 years old, his mother married Skip Johnson, grandson of J.O. Johnson. “I grew up hanging around the old boat works,” says Brown. “Sailing has given me fantastic memories and lifelong friends, some of whom I still compete against today.” Brown races with an A boat crew on Monday nights and says people travel to White Bear Lake from all over to race.

white bear lake sailboats

“I grew up sailing, but never lived on a lake,” says Kathy Sanville of White Bear Lake. “The White Bear Sailing School helps bridge the gap for sailors without lakefront property.” Sanville co-skippers Hedwig, one of Driscoll’s A boats. All of Driscoll’s A boats are named after Harry Potter characters, to pique the interest of young sailors.

Once interest is sparked, sailing classes are available at White Bear Sailing School all summer. Nick Hovland is waterfront director for WBSS and also head coach of the high school sailing team. “We have over 250 participants at the sailing school each summer, ranging from 4 to 70 years old,” says Hovland.

For kids in grades seven through 12, sailing is one of the few co-ed sports in America. It’s offered to local students spring and fall. “Many think you need to know how to sail to be on a high school team,” Hovland says. “But we take kids with zero experience and teach them to sail. All they need is a lifejacket and some waterproof clothing. We’ve had lots of success and have competed at the national level.”

white bear lake sailboats

Adult novices are also encouraged to take a sailing class. Adults with a little experience and lots of enthusiasm can just head out to White Bear Lake and offer to help crew sailboats during race nights. “Sailboat skippers are especially eager for extra crewmembers on windy days,” says Drake.

White Bear Lake is a social hub for the local sailing community, where enduring friendships are formed. Sailing is a lifetime sport that allows sailors to continually enjoy and challenge themselves out on the water. So, don’t just sit there: Set sail.

White Bear Lake Events This Week at Tally’s

All summer long, we host special events, weekly activities, and a rotation of great live music, guests have a great time at tally's and cg hooks bbq.

Nothing to say but amazing things about this place. We been renting pontoons from Tallys since our high school days (class of 2008 and 2010). We been with them even before they upgraded the place. It used to be just a tiny little shack with little baites to chose from and a couple choices of beverages. It's amazing to see how far along they have come. Nothing but great memories there. They have been nothing but great to us. Planning on renting more with them in the future with our little ones. The staffs are great and are always welcoming.

I just wanted you to know that we had a great time on the pontoon! Your boat was clean and comfortable, the staff were super friendly and polite, and we just had a terrific experience! Have a good summer!

Very convenient that you can reserve a fishing boat online (not pontoons). We've reserved the deluxe fishing boat twice and had great experiences. The dock boys are very helpful and friendly. They keep the boats really clean and maintained. Caught a 28" Northern the second time, so maybe that sweetened the deal. ;) Will keep renting boats from them, until someday we buy our own!

It's my first Summer here in MN, and one of the things I looked forward to was to try driving a Pontoon boat haha! It was quite an experience. I loved how helpful and knowledgeable the guy who instructed us yesterday. The boat was clean and new. It was all worth it. We enjoyed the beautiful day! Definitely coming back and I highly recommend it to everyone to see, try it for yourself

Tally's is a great place to visit, whether it's for food, drinks, or boat rentals. My family and I have rented out pontoons, paddle boards, etc. here for the past few summer's and we absolutely love it. They have a great patio area and live music on the weekends! Very fun place and great atmosphere during the warm, Minnesota summer'!

Tally's sits on the lake with a fantastic view of the water from every seat. We just stopped for drinks while out for a bike ride - but the food looked and smelled delicious. We have already talked about going back to try food next time. It was busy, but the waitstaff were very attentive.

Every now and then a person has an experience in life that transforms a normal, average or even mundane day into something utterly unforgettable. Amazing view on lake, beautiful and sweet hostess, excellent music and some of the finest snacks I have had the pleasure of having dance across my tongue... and I mean ever. Run, don't walk to Tally's, and dance and shout while you're there!!

Our Mission

White Bear Sailing School will engage in such activities that foster the knowledge, practice and the art of sailing at White Bear Lake among the youth and their families, both as a current and a lifelong activity.

Building the new sailing school

Building the current sailing school

Introduction    White Bear Lake has a rich history of sailing and boat building. While the iconic boat builders such as Amundson and Johnson Boat Works may no longer exist on the lakeshore, sailboat racing and sailing instruction on White Bear Lake continues. In 2016 the White Bear Sailing School celebrated 60 years of teaching youth the sport of sailing on White Bear Lake. The school, which is open to the public, offers sailing opportunities from ice out to late fall. The school has grown from an initial 25 students to about 300 per year.

Early Beginnings    A local sailor, W.G. (Bill) Graves, Jr., was the first to conduct regular sailing lessons for the young sailors from White Bear Lake in the 1950s. The first year he taught twenty-five students who met each Saturday morning during the summer. In 1959, Harvey Mills and Jock Irvine taught sailing lessons under contract with the White Bear Yacht Club. Doug Mills, in partnership with Jock Irvine, also taught sailing classes on White Bear Lake in 1965 and singly in 1966. At that point, the classes were no longer connected with the yacht club.

Art and Marian Johnson who were both area high school teachers became associated with the White Bear Sailing School in the mid 1960's. They ran the school for many years along with older graduates of the sailing school who returned home from college during summer. At that time, the school did not own any boats. Students used their own sailboats, used sailboats loaned by people on the lake, or were paired with students who had boats.

Incorporation as Non-profit    The school was incorporated as a public non-profit organization in 1980. This was the start of the school’s expansion to offer more classes and racing opportunities for area youth. It also enabled the school to begin acquiring its own boats through donations and fundraising.

Waterfront Classes    During most of the WBSS’s 60-year history, classes were held on the waterfront at the White Bear Yacht Club. Classes, high school practices, and regattas continue to be held there and are headquartered at the new Smokey Ordway Lakeside Pavilion constructed in 2013. The school’s fleet of 40 boats are kept there.

Image caption here

Boats    Through the years, the school has taught sailing in 16-foot X boats, originally designed for youth in 1932 by Johnson Boat Works. In the 1990s, the school added Optimist Dinghies, built by Johnson Boat Works, to its fleet of boats. These 8-foot dinghies are used world-wide to teach younger sailors to sail and race. Another class of boat, the Club 420, was added to the WBSS fleet in 2007. It offered the opportunity to initiate a High School sailing program for our local schools to compete in the district, state and national High School sailing. Sailors from the White Bear Area have been state champions in recent years.

Past Student and Instructors’ Success    Several past student and instructors from the school have gone on to be sailing coaches at other sailing schools and yacht clubs. Andy Johnson has coached at the intercollegiate sailing team at the University of Hawaii since the early 1990s. Mark Dunsworth, former WBSS President, coached at several sailing schools and was Director at Minnetonka Sailing School. Katie Tinder coached at Severn Sailing Association, was the Sailing Director at Pewaukee Lake Sailing School in Wisconsin and in 2016 became sailing program manager at the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago. Dan Thompson is Sailing Director at Little Traverse Yacht Club and assistant sailing coach at Hobart College. David Thompson is assistant sailing coach at Dartmouth College.

Several past WBSS students have gone on to place very high in or win Inland Lake Yachting Association regattas, High School regattas, and college regattas.

Plans for bike trail around White Bear Lake proceed, but Dellwood officials question costs

Mike Brooks and other members of the Lake Links Association have been working since 2017 to create a 10-mile walking and biking trail around White Bear Lake.

On Saturday, association members will celebrate the group’s progress with a “Ride Around the Lake,” a free guided bike ride that will start and end at the Saputo Station rest stop in Bellaire Beach Park in White Bear Township.

About 80 percent of the trail is in place; the remaining connections are expected to be made in the next few years, said Brooks, founding member of the association and its chairman. Officials of the White Bear Lake-area nonprofit organization have lobbied for the trail system at all levels of government “because the route – in order to circumnavigate the lake – must connect through five lakeside communities and two counties,” Brooks said.

The most recent addition to the trail was the completion this summer of a segment along South Shore Boulevard, which passes through White Bear Lake and White Bear Township. In 2018, Ramsey County got $2.6 million from the state to complete the segment, Brooks said.

A large percentage of South Shore Boulevard, from McKnight to County Road F, went from a two-lane county roadway “that was all busted up and didn’t have much of a shoulder” to a one-way road with parking areas and a 10-foot wide shared-use trail along the lake side, Brooks said.

“It totally changed the neighborhood,” he said. “People weren’t out on it before. Now, people are out all the time. It has just transformed the neighborhood. You’d be amazed at how the neighborhood has such a wonderfully slow feel to it. The speed of people.”

Minnesota 96 corridor

Two sections of the trail – one on the north side of the lake along Minnesota 96 and the other heading south from 96 in the Minnesota 244 corridor through Dellwood – remain to be implemented, he said.

Brooks said he hopes the solution for the roughly ¾-mile segment in Ramsey County along Highway 96 will be part of a Highway 96 Corridor Study launched this summer by Washington County Public Works officials. Washington and Ramsey counties, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, are leading the study, which covers a 10-plus-mile stretch of the highway from U.S. 61 in White Bear Lake to Minnesota 95 in Stillwater.

The study will specifically consider safety improvements, pedestrian and bicycle needs and general condition of the pavement, guardrails and culverts, said Madeline Dahlheimer, a senior planner for Washington County.

The county will be engaging with property owners, neighbors and businesses along the route as part of the study, which is expected to conclude next summer. The first public open house on the project will be 4-6 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter in Grant.

“It’s a balancing act,” Dahlheimer said. “We would love to get a trail in there, but there are property impacts to consider, technical challenges, costs implications and other needs to be balanced with implementation of a trail.”

The entire Minnesota 96 corridor is “pretty tight,” Dahlheimer said. “That’s one of the challenges of the study, people can’t really walk or bike safely there. We need to find balance between what will support safety along the corridor, what can be supported by the community, and preserving the unique character of Highway 96.”

Local costs a concern

Dellwood officials have launched their own study of possible alignments for the 1.5-mile portion of the Lake Links trail in their community. Possible routes would be adjacent to or within the portion of Minnesota 244 in Dellwood, Brooks said.

The city received a $2.6 million grant from the Minnesota Legislature in 2020 to plan and implement the Minnesota 244 segment. In 2023 the state granted an additional $2 million to offset additional costs anticipated by city officials, he said.

But Dellwood City Administrator/City Clerk Joel Holstad said Wednesday that the cost to build the trail through the city could reach as much as $4.7 million, and the city would have to make up the $100,000 difference.

“The city of Dellwood simply cannot do that,” he said. “The real problem is that the city of Dellwood, if it accepts the grant money from the state, is obligated to pay to complete the trail.”

Dellwood would need to partner with another agency like Washington County or receive additional funding from the state during the next legislative session to make that happen, he said.

The initial grant the city received “has a timing component to it that we don’t believe we can meet,” Holstad said. “We are working to resolve those issues, but there’s absolutely no reason whatsoever to be optimistic at this moment that the existing $4.6 million is going to be able to take care of the trail.”

The city cannot be asked to “solely bear the entire cost of the trail construction, as well as permanent long-term maintenance,” he continued. “We’re a city of only about 1,000 people, and most of them are not trail users.”

In fact, the $2 million supplemental grant in the last legislative session “came as a surprise to us,” Holstad said, adding that Lake Links Association officials applied for the grant without apprising city officials.

“We did not request it,” he said. “We did not know about it until after it was awarded to us. The Lake Links Association didn’t even bother to ask the city of Dellwood if they would be able to use the funds to complete the trail. They just did it on their own.”

City officials have been exploring trail options for almost 50 years, he said, and have “not found a way to resolve the many obstacles that exist – although the council is interested in providing for a safe trail passage if it can be accommodated within the right of way, and if the city isn’t expected to pay for it.”

Seeking solutions

Brooks, however, remains optimistic that the trail project will one day be competed.

“Those are the last two sections, and then the project is done,” Brooks said. “We’re waiting on (Dellwood and Washington County) to get their studies done. I have every reason to believe that this will get done because both Ramsey and Washington (counties) and Dellwood are behind this project. Solutions to complete each of them are being actively pursued.”

Brooks, who now lives in Silver Cliff, Wis., continues to work on the trail plan as a way to honor his friend Steve Wolgamot, who died in 2022 of complications related to glioblastoma , a form of brain cancer.

“He called me and said, ‘I know you’ve moved, but you can’t leave. We need the continuity,’” Brooks said. “I’m in now until the end.”

Wolgamot “believed in working for the collective good,” Brooks said. “He was all about the idea that every individual can make a difference and, collectively, we can make a huge difference.”

In an interview posted on the Lake Links Association website before he died, Wolgamot talked about the need for a safe trail system.

“For the very young and the very old, the ability to move around without a car … is a really important thing,” Wolgamott said. “For children, it’s how they establish their independence. For seniors like me, it’s a significant way we preserve and extend our independence. If we as a society don’t make it possible for people to move around, I don’t think we’ve done our job well.”

The ride on Saturday is a way for people to celebrate the sections that have been “newly completed or newly enhanced,” Brooks said.

“But we also ride in the areas that still need to be completed,” he said. “We experience the uncompleted sections so we can see why it needs to be done – how unsafe it feels, just how it feels. It’s that visceral experience. We ask people, ‘What did you like? What didn’t you like?’ It just keeps it fresh in people’s minds, and they rally communities to work harder. They’ll encourage us and say, ‘You really need to get this done.’”
