Large superyachts visiting London, England on the river Thames are an exciting spectacle, but also a fantastic base to access events and the central parts of the city, making London a very interesting yacht charter prospect. There are also luxury yacht marinas and berths available with more currently being developed.

On such marina is the historic St Katharine Docks in central London which has berthage for 200 luxury yachts and historic barges. A haven of tranquillity and nestled in the heart of the City of London, St Katharine’s is directly adjacent to the iconic Tower Bridge and next to the Tower of London. St Katharine Docks has a thousand years of dramatic history to its name, making it one of the most interesting marina histories in the world.  King Edgar originally gifted 13 acres of land to 13 knights in 1125for trade. St Katharine’s docks have been used ever since throughout the ages for one purpose or another and then in 1825 construction began on the docks, laying down the framework for what you see today.

When visiting the UK with London on the itinerary, yachts also dock in the city of Southampton in south-west England. Many vessels drop anchor at Ocean Village Marina or Hamble Point Marina. Expect a coach or train journey time of around 1 hour 20 minutes from Southampton into South London.

I wanted to organise something for my husband's 50th later in August but then we decided to go sooner, impromptu, as the weather in London is simply calling for a boat trip! Crew and Captain were very friendly and professional, yet at a distance as one expects from a 5-star service on a yacht. As an extra we had an amazing meal prepared from scratch on board by one of Gaucho restaurants top Chefs - very nice day which turned into a magical evening!

This is a terrific charter. A perfect boat for sightseeing (I'd say 5 is about the max unless you have kids) and a well trained, very professional crew to ensure you have an amazing time on the water. Highly recommend!

Great thing to do in London!! Especially in a pandemic or if you want privacy and space from people but want to see things...

Where does the london private boat hire go.

The London private boat cruises from your chosen embarkation pier, up and down the river so you can see all the sights of London and then will drop you back at your chosen disembarkation pier. Our Thames private boat hire would typically cruise to Greenwich, through the City to Westminster – may go further depending on timings and river tides.

What sights will I see on the London private boat hire?

Depending on the timings, tides and where you embark/disembark, you would typically see Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, The London Eye, Tate Modern, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Shakespeare’s Globe, The Shard, HMS Belfast, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the skyscrapers at Canary Wharf, Cutty Sark, Greenwich, and The O2 London.

How long is the London charter boat cruise?

Our average Thames private boat hire would be for 4 hours. You can cruise for shorter (Hire rate is a min 4-hours), or you could cruise for longer at an additional cost.

What is the maximum/minimum number of guests we can have onboard your London private boat hire?

You can have anywhere from 1 guest to 300 guests onboard your Thames private boat hire. Depending on your numbers and requirements, we would have your London private boat hire on the boat that would be best suited for you.

Does your London charter boat have an outside deck?

Yes, all our London charter boats have outside decks so you can get some fresh air and see the beautiful sights of London. Some London charter boats have completely open spaces, some have fixed seating, and some have outdoor furniture.

Are kids allowed on board your London charter boat?

Yes of course! They would just need to be accompanied by an adult.

Can we have decorations on the London charter boat? Yes of course!

You can decorate the London charter boat in whichever way you wish, ie. Balloons, banners, flags, bunting etc. However, some items are not allowed such as glitter, confetti, small streamers or open flames such as candles.

Is the London charter boat wheelchair accessible?

Depending on which London charter boat it is, it may be wheelchair accessible. If you have any accessibility requirements, that’s no problem just let us know and we have put your boat on the most suitable boat for you.

Which pier can we embark/disembark at?

You can embark and disembark at whichever pier you like (subject to availability and is tide dependent). The most popular piers we would use would be Westminster Pier, London Eye Pier, Blackfriars Pier, and Tower Pier. Let us know where you are based or which area of London you will be in, and we can see which pier would be best for you.

Can we have our London private boat hire event go past 11:30pm?

Yes, your London private boat hire event can go past 11:30pm. There will be a late finish surcharge applied.

Do you cater for all dietary requirements?

Yes, we cater for all dietary requirements, including gluten free. The only dietary requirement we wouldn’t cater for would be Kosher. If you would like Kosher meals please speak to our friendly sales team. We would need to know the dietary requirements no later than 7 working days prior to the Thames private boat hire event.

Do you do vegetarian and vegan options?

Yes, we do vegetarian and vegan options. If you see a dish on our menu that isn’t vegetarian or vegan, we can discuss it with our talented chefs and see if we can make them vegetarian or vegan.

Do you do halal food?

Yes, all our food is halal, except for the dishes containing pork.

Can we bring our own food and drinks on the London private boat hire?

If your London private boat hire event is off peak, you may be able to bring your own food onboard. This would need to be with a licensed caterer, and we would need to discuss their requirements and see proof of insurance. You wouldn’t be able to bring your own soft drinks or alcohol. The only exception would be for specialty drinks we cannot supply. There will be a corkage fee in these cases.

When do you need to know final numbers?

We would need to know final numbers at least 2 weeks prior to the London charter boat event.

When do you need the final payment?

We would need final payment at least 2 weeks prior to the Thames private boat hire event also.

Do you allow ticketed events?

We do not allow third party, promoted ticketed events. If the event is found to be at such it can be cancelled at any time, including during the event.

Do you allow 18th and 21st birthday parties?

London can get pretty damn sweaty during the hotter months . And while  day trips  and  seaside jaunts  are great for some light relief from the heat, sometimes city responsibilities mean escaping Zone 6 just isn’t possible. If you need to swap your stuffy flat for cooler climes, but only have a few hours to spare, a boat trip might be just what you need.

Luckily London is full of rivers, lakes, ponds and canals to pedal across, row down or canoe around, and we’re blessed with loads of great places to hire boats, too. Here’s our guide to the best boating spots in the city to help you cool down. Just try not to fall in!

• Sightseeing

Hyde Park is home to London's oldest boating lake, and visitors can take out a pedalo or rowing boat to admire the many interesting waterfowl that call it home (as well as the brave swimmers in the unheated Serpentine Lido). The boats get very popular in good weather, especially at weekends, but the lake's spacious so once you're out there you should find plenty of room to sail.

Price : £12 per adult per hour (£10 for half an hour). Open daily 10am-6pm April-May; 10am-7pm June-August; 10am-8pm June-August; 10am-7pm; 10am-dusk October-March.

Price : £10.50 per adult per hour. Open daily from 10am weekdays and 11am on weekends, closing at 6pm April-May; 7pm June-September; dusk in October.

3.  Lee Valley Boat Centre

This is your destination if you want a comprehensive choice of vessels to hire. There are pedalos, electric boats (with steering wheel) and traditional rowing boats available to hire on an hourly and half-hourly basis. 

Price :From £14 per boat per hour.

Open daily 10am-6pm, opening times can vary. Opening dates this year run from April 8-October 22. 

4.  Crystal Palace Park Boating Lake

Not much is going to make you pedal faster than realising you're floating past a load of dinosaurs. Crystal Palace Park's ancient inhabitants have been on the banks of its lake since the 1850s, and visitors can hire a pedalo to pootle past them, pretending they're in a slo-mo, waterborne scene from 'Jurassic Park'.

Price :£5 per pedalo, per adult. Cash only. Open 10.30am-5pm weekends, bank holidays and school holidays from Easter until October. 

5.  Victoria Park Boating Lake

• Victoria Park

East London's vast and lovely Victoria Park boasts a huge lake with three islands (one of which can be accessed by footbridge) to row or pedal past. There's also a beautiful fountain, which will need avoiding if you're not in the mood to get drenched. The nearby Pavilion Café sells refreshments to perk you up afterwards.

Price :£10 per boat per half hour.  Open daily. 12pm-5pm Mon-Fri, 12-6 Sun. Opens each year roughly from Easter-October 31.

6.  Moo Canoes

Kayak down the Thames in a bovine boat as part of this alternative sightseeing tour. A two-man vessel decorated with a black and white cow print will be your mode of transport. There are several alternatives but 'Greenwich Meal Time' runs from Limehouse Basin to the Royal Naval College at Greenwich.

There you'll disembark and dine in a riverside restaurant, before sailing back via the Millennium Dome. The trip is suitable for beginners and no kayaking experience is necessary.

Price : From £26 per tandem kayak for the first hour. Book in advance. Open Sat and Sun 10am-5pm April-October. 

7.  Greenwich Park Boating Lake

There's nowhere to hide on Greenwich Park's little lake, so if you'd rather your mates didn't see you steering a pedalo (or rowing boat) like it's a bumper car you might like to sail elsewhere. The plus side to this is that any landlubbers can wave and take photos from the banks while you're on board.

Price : £4 per adult per half hour. Open 10am-5pm weekends, from April-October. 

8.  Dulwich Park Boating Lake

Take a serene trip across Dulwich Park's lake in one of its green pedalos or rowing boats and enjoy views of the nearby pavilion café while you float.

Price : £4 per adult per half hour. Cash only. Open 10am-5pm on weekends, bank holidays and school holidays from April-October. 

9.  Hollow Ponds

A true escape from tarmac and concrete, Epping Forest's Hollow Ponds are a beautiful stretch of water offering you the space to row your own adventure. Apart from the boathouse, Lakeside Diner and other facilities there's hardly a building to be seen, and friendly staff are on hand to instruct beginners.

Price : £15 per boat per hour (£10 for a half hour). Open daily 10am-8pm 

10.  Alexandra Palace Boating Lake

You'll have to get up one heck of a hill to reach Ally Pally, but your efforts will be rewarded with a choice of rides that would get even the most po-faced pedalo-er squealing with delight. Choose to float across the lake in a swan, a dragon or a VW Beetle, or go trad with a plain yellow design.

Those looking to put some extra effort into their waterborne experience can take out a rowing boat instead. The Lakeside Café offers indoor and outdoor seating, free wifi and baby changing facilities.

Price : From £6.95 per adult per half hour with a minimum fee of £8.95. Open 10am-6pm Apr-Sept, 10am-4pm Oct-March, weather permitting.

11.  Battersea Park Boating Lake

The pretty lake in Battersea Park sees its hired rowing boats and pedalos going round in circles thanks to a central island. Its tall greenery also serves to allow beginners to find a more secluded spot to practice in before they are confident enough to steam back into port.

Price : £6 per adult per 30 minutes. Open school holidays, public holidays and all weekends between Easter and the end of September. 

12.  Finsbury Park Boats

Row your boat around the island in Finsbury Park's little lake. You may find yourself ducking and diving to avoid the bird life, however, especially if you've bought a bag of swan and duck feed with you. 

Price : £8 per boat per 30 minutes. All those who don their best pirate oufits on a Saturday (noon-3pm) will get a boat for £5. Open noon-6pm daily from Easter to early October, then weekends in Autumn.

Windsor Marina: Situated three miles from Windsor town and can berth up to 175 vessels. From here you can cruise to central London or Oxford. The marina offers fuel and extensive facilities and services.

London Heathrow Airport is approximately 12 miles from Windsor Marina.

Penton Hook Marina: This is Britain’s largest marina that can accommodate 575 berths. The marina can moor vessels up to 30 meters in length as well as pontoons, narrowboats, and Dutch barges. From here you can cruise to Windsors and Datchet and follow the route right into Central London.

London Heathrow Airport is roughly 17 km from Penton Hook Marina.

Shepperton Marina: Can accommodate over 400 boats with electricity and water. The marina is open 7 days a week and has closed-circuit surveillance. There are full chandlery and marine stores and large servicing and repair workshops. The marina has ample car parking and is only 30 minutes from London by road. Overall, a top marina for cruising the Thames with a variety of sailing choices.

The London Heathrow Airport is 5.2 miles/8.4 kilometers from Shepperton Marina. Next is London Gatwick Airport, which is 20 miles away/ 33 kilometers. The London City Airport is roughly 23 miles/ 37 kilometers away.

Abingdon Marina: A picturesque marina that can accommodate cruisers, narrowboats, and barges. The marina can withstand severe weather conditions, keeping the boat safe during flood conditions. Water and electricity are available to all moorings. There is a secure compound for parking your car, as well as a wealth of pubs and restaurants nearby.

The closest airport is London Heathrow, which is 38 miles away from Abingdon. Next is London Luton Airport, which is roughly 42 miles away.

Bossoms Marina: Situated in the Oxford canal and has 120 walkways, berths for all sorts of vessels.

Walton Marina: Offers direct access onto the River Thames with over 170 berths. All sorts of facilities and services are offered here, including free Wi-Fi to annual moorers and engineering services for all types of motor cruisers.

The London Heathrow Airport is roughly 10 km away from Walton Marina.

Titchmarsh Marina: Located on the Essex Coast and can berth over 400 vessels. There is 24-hour security, chandler services, and engineering for all mechanical needs.

Chertsey Marina: Situated near Chertsey Bridge and can berth up to 110 vessels that go up to 12 meters in length. There is 24-hour security for all, as well as engine repairs on site. The marina is only 5 minutes away from Thorpe Park.

Tips for cruising the River Thames:

A rigorous lookout should be maintained when entering the river.

A vessel must not cross or enter a fairway when other vessels are coming the other way, and if they do, stick to the right.

Navigational lights are operational. Also watch out for white flashing lights on the bridges and prevent using that arch as this often means a large craft is approaching.

Cruise at a safe speed to avoid collisions.

You are your own captain at London Boat Rentals! Our boats reach a cruising speed of 5 miles an hour, very similar to driving a golf cart. The boats are very easy to navigate. Upon boarding our vessels, our Dock Master will charter you to the open Bay. Once the dock master reaches the end of the dock, the keys will be handed off to you! You will be given a quick tutorial on how to navigate the vessel, a map of all the sites to see and places to cruise. It's as easy as that! Our boats are always food, drink, and pet friendly! We provide ice upon request. Feel free to bring your own cooler! Unfortunately due to covid we are not lending out coolers at this time. If you like popcorn, it's always free too! Welcome back to  What I Rent  – Metro’s tenant diary series exploring what  renting  is like in the UK and further afield.

For last week’s sister column, What I Own , we visited Anna and Paul Moynihan’s £590,000 three-bedroom home in Tooting, South London .

Since buying it five years ago, they’ve transformed it into a family space to share with their two young children – and have found a strong local community in the process.

This week, we’re in Wiltshire visiting Camilla Collins, who swapped her life in North London for the peace and quiet of the countryside.

Having found a property that’s the same size as her home in London, she’s now renting that out for double what she pays in Kingsdown.

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Camilla, a confidence and lifestyle coach published author and owner of  makeup agencies CJC Hair and Makeup and Glitter & Glo . I’m a born and raised London girl but in 2023 I decided to upticks with my two cocker spaniels, Arthur and Bibi, in search of more peace, calm, and space in the countryside.  

I put my house in North London up for rent in January and in February (Valentines Day) we moved into our new home just 15 minutes from Bath!

I originally bought my London house in September 2019 for £930,000, and the Zoopla estimate now comes in at around £1.13 million.

I pay £1,800 in rent (I got it down from £2,000 by offering to pay 12 months upfront). As for bills, my water is currently at £94 per month.

As it’s a listed property with no double glazing it doesn’t keep the heat in – so the gas and electricity bills are £500-£600 in the winter and around £150 in the summer.

I’ve had to invest in a powerful heater which I literally sat in front of last winter! This year, I’m going to try and get something to cover the windows to see if I can keep the heat in.

And what do you get for what you pay?

A gorgeous Grade II listed property in Kingsdown with the most stunning views. It’s a quirky characterful property laid out across four levels.

I have three bedrooms, three bathrooms (previously four bedrooms but they changed one bedroom into an additional bathroom) and a beautiful little garden. 

Do you feel like you have a good deal?

I feel it’s an amazing deal! My property is the same size as mine in North London which I rent out for double what I pay here, and I have a much better quality of life.

Where is your home based? What do you think of the area? 

It’s based in Kingsdown and has the most spectacular views! I’m a short walk from a few shops in the village of Box and surrounded by plenty of beautiful walks.

I’m just a 15-minute drive from Bath and have easy access to Wales and the coast for exploring and adventures! I also found a wonderful charity called Jamie’s Farm nearby where I volunteer each week.

How did you find this property?

My criteria was anywhere between London and Bristol as I have a friend in Bath, another in Bristol, and family in the Cotswolds.

My Rightmove property search took me to Oxford, Chippenham and Stroud and I nearly gave up when I couldn’t find anything suitable, but thankfully found this gorgeous property just before I gave up and snapped it up there and then.

How have you made this place feel like home? 

I used a full packing and moving service so I have all my furniture and items from my London property here which made it feel like home.

The property has a lot of character which I love, and there are so many places to explore either on foot from my front door or a traffic-free car ride away from the mountains of Wales or the coast.

I travel a lot for work and I’m back in London at least a couple of times a month. My new home is the perfect little haven and retreat to come back to rest and reset.

I’ve also been making an effort to attend social and networking events and have cultivated a lovely network in Bath and Bristol – I’m even hosting two of my own coaching events here this autumn. The community at Jamie’s Farm is so lovely and they really made me feel so welcome and supported when I first moved here.

Have you found it difficult to decorate when renting? Is your landlord happy with you doing bits? 

I’ve assumed that with a rental property you really just take it as it is. I mainly used the nails that were already on the wall to hang larger artwork and then Command strips for others.

I put in a request to fix a TV to the wall which my landlord approved so long as it was put right when I left, although I didn’t bother in the end and found an alternative.

Do you feel like you have enough space? 

Yes, plenty of space! In fact, too much of it, and I’ll be looking to downsize a little next year.

Are there any problems with the home you have to deal with?

It’s an old property so there have been a few issues with the odd leak and heating, but all have been dealt with by the agents. It’s actually quite nice to be in a rented property and have someone else deal with it!

Do you have plans to move again any time soon? What about buying a place?

Yes, I’ll be looking to downsize next year. I thought about moving further out but I’ve got such great transport links back into London from here that I feel I would make life harder moving further out and I’ve also fallen in love with this area! 

Although I was going to continue renting, I’ve also got my eye out for properties to buy. I would never sell my London home as it fetches good rent so this would be an additional property and only if the numbers make sense.

I recently viewed a gorgeous cottage with potential for an Airbnb as well, but it needed quite a lot of work so I’m still looking… we shall see what the new year brings!
