A pivotal shift occurred on January 1, 2005, mandating that all homebuyers within Newport Shores must assume the role of an Active Member in the Newport Yacht Club and maintain this status.

While most Newport Shores homeowners hold the coveted title of Active Resident Members in the Newport Yacht Club, this tier of membership extends beyond the community’s boundaries. Even after relocating, members can retain their status by continuing to pay monthly dues, billed every quarter. This entitles homeowners and their immediate families to the full spectrum of club facilities and activities.

For those who own marina slip licenses, a distinct mandate is in place – becoming an Active Associate Member of the Club is compulsory. This entails an initial fee and recurring monthly dues, also billed quarterly. In addition to access to the Clubhouse amenities, Associate Members are welcomed to engage in all Club activities.

Even home renters within the Newport Shores community can become Active Associate Members under the purview of their landlord agreements, subject to Board approval. Marina slip renters, on the other hand, have the flexibility to opt for Active Associate Membership during their occupancy. 

All membership categories, including Resident, Active Resident, and Active Associate, offer perks such as receiving the monthly newsletter and accessing the dedicated member’s website.

Really amazing marina!!! Great location! Staff is very friendly and informative. Easy check in.

Do not, do not, do not consider mooring your vessel at this marina, even for an overnight, if you can avoid it. The constant turbulence will cause substantial wear and tear, if not major damage, to your boat. The constant rolling at the dock tore a chock out of my toe rail within a day. It was as difficult to furl my mainsail at the dock as on the water on a rough day. Cooking and sleeping aboard are torture. The amenities provided are mediocre at best, but even if they were excellent, would not override the hazards of this poor location for a marina. I would rate this place zero stars, if that were an option.

This review is from the previous Newport Marina, which until 2017 operated hundreds of small-boat slips. These slips extended far into the Hudson River and were parallel to passing ferries, making them subject to terrible wakes. A new Newport Marina is reopening in 2023, consisting only of protected yacht dockage far away from ferry wakes. This is no longer an issue.

International

International racing includes the OSTAR , TWOSTAR and JESTER CHALLENGE .  These races are short handed races with the OSTAR and JESTER CHALLENGE races being single handed and the TWOSTAR a double handed race.  These races start in the United Kingdom and finish in Newport, RI.

The Royal Western Yacht Club has elected Charlie Thomson as Commodore replacing John Lewis.

The next Ostar/TwoStar Transatlantic Race will be held in 5 May 2024.  The RWYC will be running both a single and a double handed class.  This Ostar was going to be in 2020 to coincide with the 400 year anniversary of the Mayflower landing however Covid-19 happened.  As the start is in Plymouth, Devon there is interest in involving Plymouth, MA in the race.  By switching to even years will give some relief to berthing both Bermuda One-Two and Ostar/TwoStar boats together in our marina here in Newport, RI.

Newport International Boat Show set for Sept. 12-15. What to know.

NEWPORT – The Newport International Boat Show will take place Sept. 12 to 15 at the Newport Yachting Center Marina.

The Newport International Boat Show spans over 15 acres with six connecting show sites within historic downtown Newport, according to a news release. Visitors can walk the docks and view a spectacular display of new sailboats and powerboats, some making their debut in the United States. This year there’s an acre of even more boats to see throughout show, including a brokerage basin, with both power and sail boats ranging up to 110 feet now on display for the first time. On the land side, visitors will find hundreds of marine products, services and accessories to enhance the boating lifestyle.

Educational presentations and tech talks

Also on deck are the Cruiser’s Classroom, located Below-Deck at the Hammetts entrance to the Show, an educational experience featuring interactive presentations covering an array of marine-related topics such as boating, fishing, safety, boat maintenance and financing 101. Tech Talks are hands-on technical training classes for boaters of all experience levels led by American Boat and Yacht Council expert and Boat of the Year judge Ed Sherman (registration in advance is required for this course as seating is limited).

New models on display

As the kickoff for boat show season, many exhibitors launch new models for the first time in the U.S. at this show. Keep an eye out for the red and blue Newport for New Products Awards Program decals and burgees indicating each boat or product entry. Industry experts will judge each entry on opening day and awards are given in several categories. All winners will be announced Friday, Sept. 13. This year the program is featuring more than 40 new product and boat debuts, both power and sail.

The Windward VIP Lounge

New for this year, the show is offering an exclusive experience with the Windward VIP Lounge, a private oasis with views of Narragansett Bay and the ocean sounds of an active waterfront. It includes a premium open bar, gourmet food served all day, private restrooms and a place to relax and lounge, indoors and outdoors, and daily must-see pop-up activations.

Craft cocktails, chowder, burgers and more

The Bohlin Tent, located at the end of Commercial Wharf, is a place to take a pause to enjoy music and a variety of offerings for sale like Dillon’s Small Batch Distillers, Fishers Island Lemonade, Francis Ford Coppola, Newport Craft Brewing, Springline Coffee, Tequila Ocho, Sobieski Vodka, or Via Corota offering craft cocktails. Showgoers can also grab a quick bite at Wally’s Wieners, Castle Hill Inn and Food Love Market offerings, Newport Chowder Company clam chowder, Smoke House burgers and pulled pork sandwiches, and more.

“Expanding on the successful momentum of the past few years, we have added a number of brand-new experiences and activities to delight and entertain our visitors,” said Jocelyn Emory, marketing director of Newport International Boat Show. “Every year, we try to build an incredible event for our attendees, and we are proud to debut many of these offerings this year. Opening Preview Day is Thursday, Sept. 12, sponsored by Discover Newport and Marsh McLennan Agency, and the ticket price is $40. A One-Day General Admission ticket if purchased now through Sept. 11 is $31 or day-of tickets are $33, valid any one day Friday-Sunday.

Windward VIP Lounge One-Day Tickets  are $275. It is recommended to purchase digital tickets in advance. Digital tickets will be scanned at entry of the Windward Lounge. This VIP ticket is admission to the Windward and is your admission to the show for any one day of the Show. Visitors must be 18 or older to enter the Windward VIP Lounge. Limited quantities available.

Parking and show hours

The best place to park in town is at Easton’s Beach in Newport.  A parking pass is $40  per vehicle and we recommend securing your spot by purchasing online. There will be continuous, complimentary shuttles to and from the show site (only 1.5 miles) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“David and Eugene are both fantastic sailors in their own right, Eugene was a two-time All-American at the Naval Academy, he’s one of the nation’s top Sunfish sailors, and we race Vipers together a lot,” says Fanberg (at left). “Being in Newport this time of year is phenomenal given it’s so hot down south, so that’s a really good reason for our team to compete in the Resolute Cup! We’re really looking forward to fantastic competition; a lot of old friends from college will be sailing the event so it will be like a reunion of sorts—it brings back memories of racing in college sailing these type of short races.” Racing for the Resolute Cup will start on Wednesday, September 11. On Saturday, September 14, the top half of the fleet will be conclude the regatta with three double-point races.
