Captain - Philip Hopson 31, Language spoken: English Philip is from the seafaring town of Liverpool, England. His maritime career started at the age of 13, when he started working every weekend and holidays on a local Tallship. Aged 17 he went to maritime school in the UK and graduated with distinction, then began on Super Yachts in 2008. Since then, he has worked all over the world on a variety of yachts, crossing the Atlantic and Indian oceans. He holds a Master Commercial Yachts Unlimited range 500GT License. Recently Philip has worked as Captain on SY Midori, MY Golden Eagle, SY OceanStriver and MY Lionshare – as well as many years on MY Lionshare as first officer, a position he was promoted to at the age of 20. He has also served as engineer on the 40m Schooner SY Naema. Onboard he enjoys giving guests the absolute best cruising experience possible, through visiting interesting destinations, providing excellent hospitality onboard and a wide array of activities on and in the water! In his spare time, Philip enjoys travelling, being outdoors, and as well as having a passion for food - keeping fit; running and working out as much as possible. Chief Steward - Ryan Bergstrom, 28 Language spoken: English Ryan grew up on the shores of one of the world’s largest lakes, Lake Michigan. He has grown accustom to feeling most at home on or by the water. He has lived on the coast on the Pacific Ocean in California, Atlantic Ocean in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Florida; and has also lived in the South of France, in the Mediterranean. Sailing with his family as a child was his first brush with yachting, however living in Florida and being surrounded by superyachts convinced him to make the switch from land-based hospitality to yachting. Before yachting, Ryan curated an art gallery (whilst studying developmental psychology in Boston), has run service and hospitality at fine dining events around the world. Prior to MY Pura Vida he has worked on a variety of yachts from 24-116m in length including been sole stew on MY Enterprise & SY Midori and sole stew/chef onboard MY Match. Being one of seven siblings, Ryan is great at helping take care of guests of all ages and loves helping guests to enjoy the fantastic array of watersports toys which are available on MY Pura Vida. When Ryan is not working, you will find him on the beach with friends, sailing or practicing yoga. Mate – Charlotte, 30 Language spoken: English Charlotte grew up in a small village outside Chester, England. Living on a peninsula developed her passion for the ocean, along with her love of traveling – the yachting industry is a perfect fit! 5 years ago she made a base in the South of France, truly embracing the Mediterranean lifestyle. Charlotte’s first job in yachting was aboard MY DB9, a 170 Palmer Johnson, itching to see more of the world she then went onto join the 216 MY Invictus where she gained over 150,000 miles! Before joining Pura Vida, Charlotte worked aboard MY Zulu, a 115 Sunseeker. Her position as Mate perfectly combines her array of skills, knowledge and passion for people, giving guests a truly special experience. Warm hearted and extremely likable, Charlotte is a natural at making people smile and feel welcomed into the Pura Vida family that they want to stay longer! In her downtime you can find her chatting to locals, sampling the local cuisines or more often, out on the water! Chef – Cara Trubenbach Language spoken: English, German, Dutch Cara, hails from Namibia; Africa. She has been in the yachting industry for several years now. She started as a stewardess, working on a variety of yachts, before realized that she had a passion and talent in the culinary arts. She studied at Ashburton cookery school in the UK and gained her culinary diploma in 2019. Cara specializes in Asian Fusion, Mediterranean and French cuisine. Having cruised in both Mediterranean and Caribbean waters, she is well used to creating locally inspired dishes from both sides of the pond. She is confident in adapting her abilities to everyone needs and ensures an enjoyable culinary experience for the guests. Outside of yachting, Cara loves the countryside, enjoying hiking and skiing.

Yacht Owner’s Story: Moonen’s ‘Pura Vida’ Hull #191

Jim Shay bought the Moonen 99 Hull 191 (ex-Phoebe, Selene, now Pura Vida) in the spring of 2017 from Denison yacht broker, Alex Clarke. He is currently having a wonderful time on board with family and friends. In this story, Jim explains how owning a Moonen has fulfilled a long-cherished dream.

I’ve loved being on the water ever since I started boating with my family at an early age. My path to yacht ownership began in the early 1970s with our family’s first boat: a 14’ fiberglass motorboat with a pull start engine! As time went on, our boats grew in size and pedigree. My wife Monica and I own a 38’ Hinckley Picnic Boat and a 66’ Azimut, but we longed for something grander, with more exceptional seagoing capabilities.

In addition to our own boats, we have been chartering yachts. Over the years, we connected with a captain-chef couple on the 105-foot Heesen  Lady J . When they moved to a larger boat, a 130-foot Christensen  Sweet Escape , we followed them. Between my parents and I, we would spend up to seven weeks a year on charter on board Sweet Escape in New England, the Caribbean & the Bahamas.

On each occasion, we loved reconnecting with family and friends… Boating is an activity that is comfortable and fun for every generation of the family and a great way to enjoy a holiday with fun watersports, fine dining and relaxing and rejuvenating oneself. There is always something to do on a superyacht regardless of your interests, and enjoying them in some of the most beautiful surroundings in the world; is the icing on the cake.  

A Dutch dream Over the years I developed a real love for the clean and classic lines of Dutch motoryachts: Moonen, Feadship, Hakvoort or Heesen, I admired them all. Despite the advice from family and friends to avoid the investment associated with yacht ownership, I longed to own one myself one day. This urge never abated and I continued to quietly search for the right boat.

Early in the spring of 2017, I came across the listing for Moonen hull 191, I was intrigued by her “sea-luminum, fast hull” design. Knowing she was a Moonen, I anticipated she would be of exceptional quality. The Christensen we chartered was sold and we had hired the first officer and his fiancé to run our boats. They were in the Bahamas by late March 2017 and I asked them to fly to Palm Beach to take a look at the Moonen. Once onboard, they were deeply impressed with her high-quality construction and impressive Rhoades Young design.

Trusting their judgment completely, I put her under contract, sight unseen, and stepped on board myself for the first time for sea trials in Fort Lauderdale that April. There were many things that made this the right deal for me: she had a motivated seller, she was a Moonen, her engine hours were quite low considering her age (2009) and her layout and volume were spot-on.

Smart design As I walked into the wheelhouse I was blown away by the helm stations, and the engine room was a textbook example of how to build a boat of the highest standard. She has outstanding crew accommodations, far exceeding most boats of her size. These crew facilities were not at the cost of the guest suites either, illustrating how smartly designed Moonens are. People talk about how long it takes to build such boats but I have now confirmed that there’s a reason for that!

The sea and salt of the maritime environment is quite inhospitable over time and our Moonen was ready for a few months in the yard. During that time, she had a full paint job, all new interior soft goods and we added all the latest technology for navigation and entertainment. We had two captains run the refit, both skippers were hugely impressed with the construction and strength of our Moonen.

Something different The result today is a fabulous superyacht that is fully updated. She is so comfortable, so seaworthy and so quiet. Sitting in the cabins while underway you can hear a pin drop. It’s unbelievable. Her variable propellers make her extraordinarily fuel efficient. The heating and air-conditioning system are superb and whisper-quiet, you don’t see a vent anywhere on this boat. The joinery and cabinetry, the fit and finish of the interiors of the closets, the lockers, the door handles, the smooth, rounded woodwork in the lower passageway; there’s a long list of excellence. I think sometimes people don’t understand the difference in quality between boats. The minute you step on board, the minute you round the point and head into seas, you feel it; you know she’s different. 

I can get emotional about my yacht. I love my wife, my children, and my family… And then I love my boat. She has exceeded our expectations and is a pleasure to own – I am truly proud of her builders back in the Netherlands and to experience personally the quality which I’d previously only read about. We’ve had charter guests on board this winter who have raved about her and her comforts. Last summer, we were at anchorages all over New England and I lost count of how often I’d see someone going by and giving us the thumbs-up sign of approval!

My friends and I have different lives and different interests, but the one thing we all share is the way we reconnect on the ocean. It’s just a beautiful part of life and we want to introduce people to this kind of vacation by offering our Moonen  Pura Vida for charter.

We enjoy her often ourselves and we hope to bring her over to Europe. She’s got a range of 2,500 nautical miles, so we can take her just about anywhere, the world is our oyster.

Presented by DMA Yachting, the majestic charter yacht Pura Vida is a 48 ft sailing catamaran. Pura Vida spends the summer and winter season in British Virgin Islands. She was completed by the well-known ship builder Dufour in 2021. The expansive yacht layout features 4 large cabins and easily accommodates up to 8 guests.

Pura Vida is classified primarily as a sailing catamaran. The the heart of the yacht is the main saloon, which connects to the aft deck. MEET YOUR CREW: CAPTAIN: Brandon Grant CHEF: Alessia Colantoni We are a fun loving, energetic and highly motivated couple who have been dating for over 5 years and here to continue our dream of working together onboard catamaran charters. Our passion for the ocean and exploration drives us, as well as our love for entertaining guests and ensuring our guests are fully fulfilled by the end of charter. Born and raised on the beautiful coastline of Ballito – The Dolphin Coast, South Africa, Brandon’s passion for the ocean started at a young age through his father. Over the years he gathered 16 years of skippering experience, mainly on deep sea fishing adventures. He attained his RYA Yatchtmaster in 2015 which led him to his first catamaran delivery from Capetown to Seychelles, followed by another one from Greece to Maldives where his love for freediving and surfing blossomed. He then followed his fishing dreams and captained a sports fishing charter out of Seychelles where he stayed for the next 3 years. Once meeting Alessia, there quest to work on a boat together found them running catamaran charters in St Maarten followed by Antigua. Their ability to run great charters was evident and their craving for adventure grew which led them to the beautiful BVIs. Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Alessia was raised in an Italian family where she learnt to cook authentic italian cuisine from a young age. Alessia’s mom owned 3 restaurants along with a few pasta shops, and through the combination of her Nonna's and her mother and father, her skills and passion for cooking were a given. Alessia is a strong sportswoman and she qualified in swimming for the Olympics at the age of 16. Alessia's father is also an avid scuba diver and she learnt at age 9 to scuba dive and it is still a favorite past time and combined with time at their family game lodge this feeds her undying love and respect for nature, animals and the ocean. After school she moved to the seaside - the coastline of Ballito, South Africa - where she studied hospitality and met Brandon. Her studies led her to the Maldives, doing her internship in the food and beverage/kitchen/café departments. Alessia also has immense patience and a love for kids of all ages. Her young heart and caring nature will have kids well entertained and cared for on charters. With Brandon’s background and mission plus Alessia's thirst for new adventures she attained her stewardess course in Cape Town and soon after her and Brandon set their hearts on chartering boats together and combining their skills into one beautiful experience for guests. Brandon and Alessia cannot wait for you to join them on Pura Vida for a wonderful Virgin Island vacation.

This yacht was designed with TWO separate master suites! The main floor master is located forward, offering expansive views of the ocean, split level layout with large dressing area, beautiful mirrored closets, separate vanity, and an impressive lower level bath with stunning marble counters, shower and floors. The guest staterooms are located on the lower-level where the VIP was designed to create a second full beam master suite including built-in dressers, desk, large walk-in closet, sitting area, and beautiful ensuite bath.
