As well as meandering the streets of the old town, you should head into the newer side where you can take a cable car up to Mont Faron with its exquisite views of the Mediterranean coastline, as well as ancient fortifications.

As you set sail from Toulon you may well want to pause at the isle of St Mandrier sur Mer, which is connected to the French mainland with a manmade causeway yet protects the extensive bay with its topography. Used for different reasons from military to fishing over thousands of years, St Mandrier sur Mer is now a delightful resort and worthy of a visit on your shakedown sail out of Toulon.

Heading west from Toulon you will end up in the merchant port of Marseille with its riot of cultures and excellent old town. Before, do drop the hook at La Ciotat that complemented its larger ports to the east and west with shipbuilding until the turn of the 20th Century. Did you know it takes almost as much time by train from London to Toulon as it does by air? You can jump on the Eurostar at St Pancras for Gare du Nord in Paris, hop on the metro to Gare du Lyon and take a fast train on to Toulon.
