Video shows stolen 60-foot yacht crashing into boats in wild chase across California harbor: "Everything came crashing in on me"
March 11, 2022 / 9:31 AM EST / CBS/AP
A man who stole a 60-foot yacht was arrested Thursday after a 10-minute chase that ended with him hitting two other boats and a seawall in Newport Beach harbor, police said. The wild scene was all captured on video, CBS Los Angeles reports.
A report of someone vandalizing a yacht led police to the Pacific Coast Highway shortly after 10 a.m. but when officers arrived they said the suspect jumped into the boat and took off, authorities said.
Dylan Eckardt took video of the boat colliding with a docked sailboat, knocking down its mast.
Debora Dolly was aboard the sailboat when it was struck.
"The entire starboard side came crashing in on me and it didn't stop. It came once, twice, three times," she told CBS Los Angeles. "So the whole boat, the poles, the steel, the enclosure, everything came crashing in on me."
Dolly said she hit her head but otherwise was fine.
After hitting the sailboat, the boat backed up, circled and, pursued by the Orange County Sheriff's Department Harbor Patrol, continued through the harbor until it hit another parked vessel then slammed into a wall beside a bridge.
"The sounds of him hitting that wall brought everyone out of their houses," witness Kai McCartney told CBS Los Angeles.
Joel Siam, 38, of San Diego was arrested on suspicion of grand theft of a boat and possession of a stolen boat and was jailed on $3 million bail, authorities said.
It wasn't immediately clear whether he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.
The yacht was in a dock for maintenance and the keys were inside when it was taken, sheriff's deputies said.
The owner of the stolen boat told the station that it was bought new in August and was to be used for a charter business. The owner also said a half-bottle of tequila from inside the yacht was now gone.
CBS Los Angeles reported that one of the boats damaged in the incident was a 1960 Tolleycraft. The owner had just gotten delivered on Saturday — he hadn't even gotten a chance to take it out yet.

Footage has emerged of a 235ft superyacht crashing into a luxury Caribbean yacht club’s pier, causing visible damage to both the yacht and the dock.
Onlookers were shocked last week (February 24) when a 235ft (77m) superyacht collided with the dock of Sint Maarten Yacht Club in the Caribbean.
Video footage of the incident shows the extent of the damage – while the pier took the brunt of it, the superyacht’s steel hull didn’t come off unscathed.
Computer malfunction was to blame for the sickening superyacht crash, according to local publication The Daily Herald , which adds that no-one was injured as a result.

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily
Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.
The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .
The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.
The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.
“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.
Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.
Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.
“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”
Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.
On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.
“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .
The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.
“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.
What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.
“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”
The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.
Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.
“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”
The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.
Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .
Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.
Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.
In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.
“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

Man arrested after stealing yacht and crashing during joyride in Newport Harbor, police say

A man was arrested by Orange County sheriff’s deputies Thursday and held on $3-million bail after stealing a 60-foot yacht and crashing it into multiple vessels docked near the Lido Island Bridge on Newport Bay, authorities said.
Joel Praneet Siam, 38, of San Diego was transferred into the custody of Newport Beach police and booked on suspicion of grand theft boat/vessel and being in possession of a stolen vessel, said Heather Rangel, a spokesperson for the Newport Beach Police Department.
Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Anderson said Harbor Patrol deputies were first notified of a boat collision in Newport Harbor shortly after 10 a.m.
They were told a 60-foot craft had been stolen from a yacht broker and may have been involved in the incident.
“The boat was apparently being serviced at the local yacht broker,” Anderson said. It “was being motored and collided with at least two other vessels in slips near the Lido Island Bridge, where the boat stopped.”
In about 10 minutes, deputies found and boarded the yacht, which had become pinned after hitting a seawall near the bridge, Anderson said. Siam surrendered and was arrested.
“Something with this kind of damage is an isolated incident and is pretty rare,” Anderson said.
Rangel said police believe the incident began shortly before 9:30 a.m., when they say Siam committed an act of vandalism near Pacific Coast Highway around the Balboa Bay Resort before taking the boat.
Several witnesses posted video of boats crashing on social media.
Newport Beach resident Todd Newkirk was working on a construction project on the fifth floor of the Newport Towers when he heard a big boom and rushed to the balcony to see what had happened.
“I wasn’t sure if it was an explosion,” he said. “He was on the east side of the Lido Bridge and hit the first dock over there — there was a huge wake, like he had made a U-turn. Then he got pinned, but the motor was running on full power.”
“At first I thought the guy had had a heart attack and lost control of the boat,” Newkirk added. “But then I saw he got arrested. If he was sick, they would have taken him in an ambulance.”
Anderson said it is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident. The recovered yacht was being temporarily housed in the Harbor Patrol yard in Corona del Mar and appeared to have damage on its side and bow.
The amount of damage caused to the other vessels struck by the yacht has yet to be determined, he added.

Long Beach yacht crash leaves 1 dead, 3 critically hurt
Long beach boat crash kills 1, injures 10.
Cell phone video obtained by FOX 11 shows the aftermath of a deadly yacht crash in Long Beach, after the boat crashed into a jetty.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - A boat crash in Long Beach late Wednesday night left one person dead and several others hospitalized.
According to the Long Beach Fire Department, the call came in at 9:21 p.m. from the Alamitos Bay Jetty in Long Beach after a boat crashed into rocks and started taking on water. A rescue boat arrived and found a mass casualty incident involving the boat crash.
Investigators said there were a total of 11 people on board. Rescue boats performed five physical rescues, while the remaining passengers were rescued from the jetty.
1 killed, 3 injured in yacht crash
One person did not survive and three others were critically injured after a yacht crash in Long Beach the day before the 4th of July.
One man was declared dead at the scene and 10 patients were transported to local hospitals.
"I saw the rocks and it flew up like that," said Angel Mendoza, a witness.
Mendoza said he had been fishing on the jetty with friends when he saw the boat crash.
"Everyone was bleeding and one guy, his body was just lying there, on the top of the [boat’s] dashboard," said Mendoza.
The victim who died is described as a man in his 40s or 50s. One friend told FOX 11 that the man worked in real estate. Of the 10 other people on board, three were critically injured. Authorities said seven people required advanced life support.
"It was a chaotic scene for sure, pretty hectic," said Josh Agnew who works nearby. "I didn’t really know what was going on at the time, then we saw a bunch of stuff on the news."
The large boat and debris were still bobbing in the water Thursday evening.
Several curious people were making the long walk out to see it.
"You can see blood all over the rocks, a lot of blood," said Mike Mapstead. "It’s just senseless. [They were supposed] to be having a good time."

This is the shocking moment a £95 million superyacht crashed into a smaller boat with at least six people on board.
Footage shows the 232 ft boat named Ice gliding through the water as it heads towards another boat off the coast of Yalıkavak, Turkey on Saturday.
Passengers on the smaller boat can be heard screaming as the superyacht sails towards them.
The vessel’s bow then crashed into the stern of a 101ft motor yacht carrying at least half a dozen people.
It is unclear why the collision occurred, but has been reported that at least half a dozen people were on the smaller boat at the time.
The boat suffered major damage at the stern but no onboard was injured.
The superyacht is part of the Lürssen shipbuilding company and can hold 14 guests and 27 crew members.
Features include a large helipad, beauty salon and bathtubs carved out of solid limestone.
There is also a state-of-the-art gym, jacuzzi and countless lounge and relaxation areas, both in- and outdoors.
The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.
In June two boats were involved in a devastating crash and a sailor was thrown overboard during a yacht race.
A man was flung from a boat as competitors battled rough seas during the Round the Island Race in the Isle of Wight today.
He then desperately clung onto his life jacket before being rescued.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) rushed to his aid to pull him from the water despite the extreme conditions.

Breaking news, fisherman sues after dramatic boat crash caught on video.
A fisherman who jumped ship into bone-chilling water to dodge a speeding motorboat has filed a $372,500 lawsuit, alleging the other driver was distracted by his cellphone just before the dramatic crash caught on video.
Bryan Maess filed the suit earlier this month against Marlin Lee Larsen, 75, over the Aug. 12 crash near the mouth of the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, the Oregonian reports .
A GoPro camera mounted to Maess’ 20-foot fishing boat captured the chaos in the seconds before Larsen’s 31-foot motorboat crashes into the smaller, stationary vessel. A passenger on Maess’ boat frantically waves his arms and repeatedly screams “Hey!” in a desperate attempt to get the driver’s attention.
“Oh my God,” another passenger screams just before the trio leap into the chilly water.
The video — which was later posted to Facebook — shows the moment the speeding motorboat plows into Maess’ fishing vessel.
Deputies in Clatsop County and the US Coast Guard responded to the crash in the Columbia River near Tansy Point and found significant damage to the fishing boat. Maess and his two passengers, Christopher McMahon and Roni Durham, managed to jump from the fishing boat just before the crash and were later treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office .
Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, deputies said. Larsen was cited for reckless operation, three counts of reckless endangerment and three counts of fourth-degree assault.
Larsen told investigators he couldn’t see where he was driving since he was sitting down. Larsen, who uses a motorized scooter on land, admitted that he probably should’ve been standing at the time, according to a sheriff’s report obtained by the Oregonian.
Larsen’s son-in-law, who was also on the boat at the time, told investigators that he occasionally saw Larsen using his cellphone while driving the boat. State law bans cellphone use while driving, but there are no specific laws governing cellphone use while boating.
Larsen has denied using his cellphone while driving the motorboat, claiming that allegations to the contrary were “fake news,” according to the Oregonian. He has pleaded not guilty as his criminal case unfolds.
Investigators said Maess and his passengers likely dodged serious injury or death by leaping into the water. More than five months after the crash, Maess, who is a police officer, continues to suffer vision problems, headaches and injuries to his ankle, leg and arm, according to the suit.
McMahon and Durham have yet to file lawsuits against Larsen, although they’ve hired attorneys to do so. Attorney Josh Lamborn said Durham suffered psychological trauma during the crash and hasn’t been able to return to the water since August.
