LOUIS VUITTON 37TH AMERICA'S CUP BARCELONA

Welcome to the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup taking place between August and October 2024 in the beating heart of beautiful Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and one of the most visited cities on planet Earth. Situated around Port Vell and along the beach to Port Olímpic, the sailing world has made Barcelona their home for what promises to be one of the most intense America’s Cups in the event’s 174-year history.

WHAT IS THE AMERICA'S CUP: THE RACE WITH NO SECOND PLACE

It is the oldest international sporting trophy – dating back to 1851 – and stands as one of the hardest sporting endeavours. The New York Yacht Club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world, held the trophy for 132 years before losing it in 1983 to Australia. Since then, the Cup has only been won by teams from the United States, Switzerland, and New Zealand. The current Defender of the America's Cup is Emirates Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

WHERE: BARCELONA, CATALONIA, SPAIN

“Like a jewel in the sun” was how Montserrat Caballé and Freddy Mercury described Barcelona in their famous song about the city. The cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region–known worldwide for its art, architecture and vibrancy–is shining even brighter as preparations are well underway to welcome the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup and its teams. All the teams’ bases are located within the Port Vell area and surrounded by the America’s Cup Race Village where tens of thousands of spectators can be accommodated daily. The racecourse, just outside the port entrance breakwaters, is set in front of significant fan zones, beach viewing platforms and a hospitality area to provide the perfect vista.

WHEN: AUGUST – OCTOBER 2024

The Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta starts on the 22nd August and the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) will follow, leading up to the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Match starting on the 12th of October 2024. During 2023 and early 2024, three preliminary events will be held in Vilanova i La Geltrú, Jeddah, and Barcelona. In June 2023, all teams set up their bases and are training in Barcelona. WHO’S RACING: Emirates Team New Zealand, INEOS Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, NYYC American Magic and Orient Express Racing Team

The holders of the America’s Cup are Emirates Team New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, but some strong competition is coming for them. INEOS Britannia, the ‘Challenger of Record’ from the United Kingdom, are in charge of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) to decide who will race against Emirates Team New Zealand for the trophy. The unique format of the Cup sees the Defender of the trophy automatically entitled to race in the final Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup Match whereas the Challengers will undertake a series to find the top yacht to take on the New Zealand team. The additional confirmed entries are: Alinghi Red Bull Racing from Switzerland, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy, American Magic New York Yacht Club from the USA and Orient Express Racing Team from France.

WHAT BOATS: AC75 AND AC40

The AC75s are the pinnacle of foiling monohull yachts. Created for the 36th America’s Cup, they are a technological leap ahead of typical yachts as Formula 1 is to your daily driver. With foils that lift them out of the water and enable the yachts to generate so much momentum that they sail 4x faster than the wind.

For the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup, the second generation of the AC75s will be even faster with wider foils and refinements all over. Eight crew will be aboard and some of the finest sailing talent will be charged with racing them.

The AC40s, meanwhile, are the boats used for the UniCredit Youth and Puig Women's America’s Cup events and as training vessels for the main teams competing in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Smaller but no less potent, with a four-person crew, these pocket-rockets were launched to much fanfare in September 2022, and their performance has been astonishing.

Event Format

The Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona will comprise several events that will eventually culminate in the October 2024 Match. The Preliminary Regattas will serve as warm-up races ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series), which decides who moves on and faces the Defender for the ultimate prize. The very best female and youth athletes from around the world will be thrust into America’s Cup level racing for the UniCredit Youth & Puig Women's America's Cup events, paving the pathway to the future of the America’s Cup itself.

Each race will be a match race between the two teams. The winner of each race scores one point, the loser scores no points. The first team to score seven points will become the Defender of the 38th America’s Cup.

Everything you need to know about the 37th America’s Cup

Follow the build-up to the 37th America’s Cup as the teams prepare to fight it out for the oldest sporting trophy in the world.

Which teams are in the 37th America’s Cup?

In 2021 four teams raced in fully foiling AC75 monohulls which were conceived specifically for the event by then Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand and Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

These same four teams return for the 2024 America’s Cup and will be joined by two additional teams, bringing the total number of entries up to 6.

Emirates Team New Zealand – America’s Cup Defender

As the current holder of the America’s Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand will be racing again in the 37th America’s Cup. As the Defender, the Kiwis will be guaranteed a spot in the America’s Cup regatta itself.

Any other challengers will need to race each other in preliminary regattas for the right to be the single challenger in the America’s Cup regatta itself.

INEOS Britannia – America’s Cup Challenger of Record

The Challenger of Record is the name given to the first yacht club to challenge the holder of the America’s Cup once it has been won.

When Emirates Team New Zealand successfully completed their defence of the America’s Cup in 2021, the Royal Yacht Squadron immediately issued a challenge on behalf of Ben Ainslie’s INEOS Team UK (now called INEOS Britannia), so they are Challenger of Record for the 37th America’s Cup .

INEOS Britannia and Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team has strengthened an exhausting relationship, with the British challenger standing to benefit from the technical and engineering experience of the multiple World Champion F1 team.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli has a very long America’s Cup history having first competed in 2000 and has taken part in every Cup since (with the exception of the unique 2010 Deed of Gift match).

For the 36th America’s Cup Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli were the challenger of record. They also won the challenger selection series so it was this Italian team who took on Emirates Team New Zealand for the America’s Cup itself.

The team will return for the 37th America’s Cup though this time they are not the official challenger of record.

American Magic

In 2021 the New York Yacht Clubs’ American Magic was also competing, though their event was ultimately ruined by a capsize in the early part of the regatta . They did get the boat rebuilt but it never got back up to speed and they made an early exit.

The 2021 campaign marked the return of the New York Yacht Club to the America’s Cup. The NYYC held the America’s Cup from its inception in 1851 right the way through to 1983, when they were defeated by the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Australia II .

American Magic have confirmed their entry into the 37th America’s Cup and will, once again, be representing the New York Yacht Club.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing

Another team making a return to the America’s Cup scene after a long break will be Ernesto Bertarelli’s Alinghi team. The Swiss team won the America’s Cup in 2003 and then completed a successful defence in 2007.

However, a serious falling out over the potential rules for the next America’s Cup saw Alinghi taken to court by Larry Ellison and his BMW Oracle team, the 2010 America’s Cup was held between Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing in a Deed of Gift match that saw the teams fight it out in huge multihulls.

BMW Oracle won the contest and Alinghi stepped away from America’s Cup racing. Their return is a welcome one and their Cup history alongside their partnership with Red Bull Racing should see them a solid challenge from the off.

Orient Express Racing Team

The French entry to the 2024 America’s Cup was long rumoured but it was not until quite late in the day that they officially announced their intention to challenge.

It was in early 2023 that the official announcement came of a French AC entry, backed by Accor Group and its brands Orient Express and ALL-ACCOR Live Limitless.

As a fairly late challenge they will have a lot to do to be competitive, but they struck a great – and controversial – deal with Team New Zealand to buy their boat design, so should at least have a quick hull underneath them.

What boats are in the 37th America’s Cup

The Protocol for the 37th America’s Cup has been released including the rules for the class of boat to be used in the next edition of the event. Once again the America’s Cup will be raced for in AC75s . These boats were first brought in ahead of the 36th America’s Cup so this will be their second outing.

The foiling monohulls are slightly different, with rules being tweaked partly aimed at improving light wind performance and reducing crew numbers from 11 to 8.

Teams are only be allowed to build one AC75 and nationality rules are strict this time around requiring 100% of the race crew for each competitor to either be a passport holder of the country of the team’s yacht club or to have been physically present in that country for 18 months of the previous three years prior to 17th March 2021.

Emirates Team New Zealand saw success in 2017 in Bermuda with their Cyclors . Having been banned in 2021, these have made a return for the 37th America’s Cup.

Barcelona, the venue for the 37th America’s Cup

Where will the 37th America’s Cup be held?

Barcelona, Spain was selected in 2022 as the venue for the 37th America’s Cup , marking the first time a New Zealand team has chosen to defend a Cup win overseas.

The home city of Emirates Team New Zealand and the venue for the 36th America’s Cup, Auckland, had an exclusive period in which to tender for the regatta immediately after the Kiwis’ successful defence in 2021, but the sums on offer were not enough, and Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton cast the net wider internationally after rejecting a NZ$99 million (£50 million) offer from the New Zealand government.

A number venues were mooted including: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Cork, Ireland; Malaga, Spain, but Barcelona eventually won out.

When is the 37th America’s Cup?

The America’s Cup will be held in 2024 in Barcelona. Racing in the 37th America’s Cup Match itself, which is a best of 13 (first to seven) format will start on Saturday 12th October 2024 and could run all the way to the 27th October should all the races be needed to pick a winner.

The America’s Cup will be proceeded by the challenger selection series, which will see which of the five challengers gets the honour to race New Zealand for the Cup itself.

Racing for the Challenger Selection Series – officially the Louis Vuitton Cup, will take place between the 29 August 2024 and 7 October 2024.

Match Racing

Though the America’s Cup was first raced for in 1851 ( and won by the schooner America from which the trophy gets its name), this race was between a fleet of boats. A challenge by the British in the 1870s was also conducted as a fleet race.

By the 1880s, following a protest from the British, the America’s Cup was decided in a head-to-head match race where two boats sail against each other.

Match racing is a particular skill and encourages aggressive manoeuvres using the rules to put your opponent at a disadvantage. This cut-and-thrust racing, where the only objective is to beat your opponent, has long been at the heart of America’s Cup racing and produces a thrilling spectacle.

The 37th America’s Cup is about to get underway, with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron aiming to defend the title they won four years ago in Auckland.

They will face determined challengers , though, as all eyes turn towards the most prestigious sailing competition and one of the world’s oldest sporting events.

Here is everything you need to know before things begin.

When is the America’s Cup?

The Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta - essentially a warm-up round - started on 22nd August, but the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) gets underway on Thursday 29th August and ends on 8th September.

That will be followed by the semi-finals, a best-of-nine competition which will take place between the 14th and 19th of September.

yacht racing schedule

Then come the finals, a best-of-13 event between 26th September and 7th October. The winner of the finals will be rewarded with the opportunity to take New Zealand’s crown in the decisive America’s Cup Match, which will take place from the 12th to the 17th October.

Where is the America’s Cup?

This year’s America’s Cup will be held in Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain.

Teams will be based in the Port Vell area of the city, surrounded by the America’s Cup Race Village, where spectators will be able to watch the event.

Who is competing at the America’s Cup?

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will watch on as the challengers fight for a place in the America’s Cup Match. And they will need to be at their best given the standard of the opposition.

INEOS Britannia will represent the UK, while Alinghi Red Bull Racing from Switzerland, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy, American Magic New York Yacht Club from the USA and Orient Express Racing Team from France are the challengers.

What is the history of the America’s Cup?

The America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy in the world and the oldest competition in international sport. The trophy itself was created in 1848 and the competition began in 1851, when the New York Yacht Club beat Great Britain’s Royal Yacht Squadron on the Isle of Wight, with Queen Victoria in attendance.

The New York Yacht Club held the trophy for a remarkable 132 years after that, eventually losing out to Australia in 1983. Teams from the USA, Switzerland and New Zealand have won the America’s Cup in the decades since.

How to watch the America’s Cup

If you haven’t managed to get a ticket for the event in Barcelona, live coverage can be watched on the official America’s Cup website and on YouTube.

The America’s Cup social media channels will also provide regular updates and clips from the racing.

PHRF stands for Performance Handicap Racing Fleet. It's the most popular system for assigning performance handicap ratings to boats so that they can compete evenly in casual or championship racing. Milwaukee Yacht Club's Fleet of PHRF boats range in length from 24' to 42'.

The boat races on Wednesday evenings in WNOS (Wednesday Night Offshore Series) and in MBOS (Milwaukee Bay Offshore Series) on select weekends. During the weekend regattas, the Milwaukee Yacht Club fleet and the South Shore Yacht Club fleet race together. The complete racing schedule is available for viewing on this website. Many PHRF boats participate in racing on Milwaukee's beautiful Milwaukee Bay. There are three divisions: PHRF 1, PHRF 2, and the "JAM" division, which sail with a Jib and Main only. The Wednesday evening series begins in May and ends in late August; the Milwaukee Bay Offshore Series starts in June and ends in late September. Post-race food and beverages are served after each Wednesday night race and social activities after several of the Milwaukee Bay Offshore events. Between 5 and 12 sailors generally crew PHRF boats. Skippers are often looking for additional crew, and sailors frequently look for a boat to crew on. Families sail aboard many PHRF boats, making this a great way to spend quality time together. PHRF racing can be a great way to introduce yourself to the competitive side of sailing, both as an owner and crew. If you would like to get involved, please contact Fleet Captain Spencer Thomason.

The Soling Fleet is a group of dedicated racing sailors committed to fostering the tradition of one-design competition at MYC – and are determined to have fun while doing it! If you are serious about racing, there is no better way to hone your skills than in a Soling.

The Soling is a popular one-design club racer with a class organization that provides national and international competition opportunities. We are a training ground for young (and not so young) sailors who aspire to be great. The class offers world-class competition within which the novice can learn from the experienced.

The Soling is a true three-person boat; all three crew are essential to success, and an inexperienced crew learns quickly. Many of its skippers are women, as are many of the crews. The Soling has been the only gender-mixed class during our Olympic tenure.

Solings are raced in 41 countries on four continents. Club racing occurs at numerous venues in Canada, Australia, Japan, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, almost every country in Europe. You can be a part of it right here in Milwaukee and many other great sailing venues across the United States, including Annapolis, San Diego, Chicago, and Seattle. Please get in touch with us if you want to come out and race…   Soling Fleet Captain: David Crysdale

The Milwaukee Yacht Club Laser fleet is a member of the Milwaukee Bay Laser Fleet (MBLF). The latter is a co-operative Laser Racing program supported by Milwaukee Yacht Club, Milwaukee Community Sailing Center and South Shore Yacht Club.

Sailors hailing from each of the above venues participate in the MBLF Tuesday Night Laser Championship which is held inside the government breakwater on Milwaukee Harbour and runs on consecutive Tuesday nights from late May to late August each summer. Laser Full Rig, Radial and 4.7 are welcome to participate. A perpetual trophy is awarded to the series champion in both the Full Rig and Radial Rig divisions at the Milwaukee Yacht Club’s annual awards ceremony held each November. Additional Fleet trophies are usually awarded at the annual MBLF Fleet meeting held each spring. Race results and last-minute weather decisions are communicated to all fleet members via the app Statwack. Download this to your smart phone and follow MBLF Laser racing MBLF for up-to-date communication. The MBLF Tuesday Night Championship Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and Entry form can be found on the Milwaukee Yacht Club web page http://www.milwaukeeyc.com The Milwaukee Yacht Club Laser Fleet has hosted ILCA US Championship, Masters North Americans Championship, US Great Lake Championship and District 20 Championship. Currently we host an annual Laser Regatta which is combined with the Milwaukee Yacht Club annual One Design Regatta usually the first weekend of August. MYC has a fleet of Lasers available to charter with proceeds going to support the MYC Sailing School. This is a great opportunity to try out the boat and weeknight racing series. Hope to see you out on the water. Contact me for more information. MYC Laser Fleet Captain: Steve Dolan  [email protected] Band Link:  https://band.us/n/a3af0ah5lah2w

MYC has had a fleet here for more than 25 years. Because the boats have been around so long, a competitive boat can be obtained for a very reasonable price.

We race one-design on Wednesday from mid-May through the end of September. Often some of the boats finish less than one boat length apart. Our races are open to J24s from MYC, South Shore Yacht Club, Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, and boats whose owners are members of U.S. Sailing. Contact Joe McBride if you are interested in racing with us. J-24 Fleet Captain: Joe McBride Phone: 414.271.4455 Email: [email protected]

The object of the organization is to encourage and promote women in the sport of yachting and create a spirit of good fellowship among members and fellow yachters. And to encourage women to become more actively involved in the sport of sailing by developing and improving their skills and confidence in the sport.

Milwaukee Yacht Club maintains a couple of very stable yet very lively 18-foot keelboats. The Ideal 18’s are designed, built, and rigged for all levels of club sailing activities. Rigging includes a very manageable main, self-tacking jib, and traditional spinnaker.

The boats are moored at the dock, ready to be sailed in less than three minutes. These boats are available daily for recreational sailing. They are also used for the Adult Sailing Program, informal racing, spring and fall frostbite series, Champion of Champions Regatta, and numerous summer events such as beach parties, scavenger hunts, rendezvouses etc.

yacht racing schedule

Sailboat racing has long been a part of the long history of this club and we are excited to host races from April to November for local sailors. Membership at PYC is not required to participate.

Look through below for a bit of information on what we have planned. Click here for a list of racing dates.

Sign up here for the PYC Race Committee email communications. This is our general email list that we use to send out race notifications, upcoming seminars, meetings, etc.

The Race Committee will be offering a few seminars in the spring. Right now we are expecting to cover tactics, race organization, and other topics. Have a subject in mind, email us . The season may start off with a Laser Frostbite series in April and May.

Image

With the floats and boats in the anchorage our Thursday Night Series starts around the third week of May and runs until the end of September.  May will also see the start of the Tuesday Night Etchells Series and the Wednesday Night J24 Series as those fleets compete in one design duels on the bay thru the summer.

June see the Thursday Night series really kick into gear with the post race BBQ and entertainment. Local weekend races include the Centerboard Regatta and the Harraseeket Regatta.

Image

The 4th of July brings the annual Schooner Trophy Race , a jib & main race around the buoys. A casual, family friendly event. July also sees the return of the Monday Night Dinghy Series . New this year is the two day Pilot Regatta on the weekend of July 16th. This is a new format for an old event, one day will be shorter races and the other day will be a longer event. More details to come!

The first weekend of August sees the classic overnight race of the Monhegan Island Race & Seguin Sprint . This historic race started in 1928 and the legend continues as sailors head out on one of two courses (140 or 50 NM) and experience the majestic beauty of sailing under the stars.

Image

September & October

The fall often sees the breeze pick up and the racing is great. The first weekend after Labor Day will be the classic J24 Downeast Regatta , followed by Fleet 27’s annual Lobster Bowl.  PHRF fleets enjoy the Lightship Race and Fall Series on 4 consecutive Saturdays. Finally at the end of the season the docks are pulled, the boats are hauled and the Laser fleet decides it is time for one more series.

Tolyatti: A Russian Homage To Italy

This is the curious story of a Russian city named after an Italian politician, Palmiro Togliatti.

This is the curious story of a russian city named after an italian politician, palmiro togliatti.

There are cities which were made great by men, and men which have been made great by a city. This is the case of Palmiro Togliatti — a founding member and the longest serving secretary of the Italian Communist Party — and a Russian city located in Samara Oblast, known as Stavropol on Volga until 1964, which was then renamed Tolyatti, becoming the greatest tribute in the world to an Italian politician. The city of Tolyatti was named after him immediately after his death in Yalta — a seaside town in the then Soviet Union — on August 21st, 1964, as a result of a sudden stroke and cerebral bleed. He was on vacation, on his way to give his support for Brezhnev as Khrushchev’s successor.

Who was Palmiro Togliatti?

If you happen to travel around Italy, you may have noticed that in every Italian city — however big or small — there is a street named after Palmiro Togliatti. That’s because Togliatti was not just the charismatic secretary and one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party, but a legendary figure of Italian and international politics. He started his political career before World War I, joining the Italian Socialist Party in 1914, then serving as a volunteer, and returning home to Turin after being injured. During this period he learned about the Russian Revolution and became fascinated, wanting to bring soviet ideas to Italy. He became a founder of the Communist Party of Italy, which was a part of Communists International (Comintern). In fact, after the end of Fascism — during which he spent almost 17 years in Moscow, becoming one of the highest representatives of the Comintern with the blessing of Stalin — he came back to Italy as Deputy Prime Minister until 1945 and taking part in the Constituent Assembly until 1948, writing the current constitution of the Italian Republic. Under his political and intellectual leadership — enough to be nicknamed ‘The Best ’ — the Italian Communist Party would become the largest non-ruling party in Europe and the second in Italy, after the Christian Democracy, which was consistently the most popular Italian party until 1992, when the Cold War ended and the danger of a ‘ Soviet ’ turning point in Italy was warded off.

yacht racing schedule

Nevertheless, the Communist Party ruled by Togliatti had a big influence in Italian society, especially regarding culture, and achieved great results in local elections within particular regions of Italy. Togliatti chose to become a Soviet Union citizen in 1930, in fact giving up Italian citizenship. What may have seemed like complete devotion to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its General Secretary Joseph Stalin, clashes with his next choice of refusing the head of the Communist Information Bureau proposed by Stalin himself in 1951, preferring to remain General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party. Throughout his career he supported his communist beliefs but fought to bring them to his beloved home country of Italy. Palmiro Togliatti wanted to fulfill his dream of a communist plan through democracy: the original ‘ Italian way to Socialism’.

Tolyatti, the Russian city

The Russian homage to Palmiro Togliatti was not chosen at random. In fact, a significant city was named after him: Stavropol on Volga became Tolyatti ( Togliatti Russianized) because right there — on the banks of Volga river — the Italian politician had a key role in building the popular AvtoVAZ factory, the manufacturer of the Lada car brand. And thus, in the 1960s, through cooperation with FIAT , the city took a new shape and a new name, because the old Stavropol on Volga was also covered by the Kuybyshev Hydroelectric Station. This infrastruscture was crucial for the development of a large industry. Therefore Tolyatti — just like what happened in Italy with Turin — became the working-class city par excellence, and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union made it a great vehicle for propaganda and experimentation. Many facilities were built, especially for sports, and new parks and monuments emerged in Tolyatti, which were made to represent the perfect Soviet city for the perfect Soviet citizen.

A shiny, green vintage Lada car model sitting on a driveway.

Not surprisingly, many popular athletes grew up in Tolyatti, such as the Olympic champion Alexei Nemov and the former ice hockey players Alexei Kovalev, Ilya Bryzgalov, Viktor Kozlov and Alexei Emelin. As you might imagine, ice hockey is very popular around there, and the local club sponsored by Lada is one of the best across Russia. Tolyatti, due to its vast spaces, has several monuments of national interest : Victory Park, a memorial dedicated to the Soviet victory in World War II built in the Auto Factory district; Liberty Square with its Obelisk of Glory dedicated to the fighters of World War II; the Mourning Angel standing in Central Park, a memorial to victims of political repression built after the end of the Communist era. Also the Transfiguration Cathedral, with its wonderful golden domes, was built after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tolyatti was also the city where the great Russian painter Ilya Repin stayed for a brief period in 1870, painting his masterpiece ‘ Barge Haulers on the Volga’. The house where he stayed then became a monument.

Last but not least, among the most meaningful monuments of Tolyatti is ‘ Loyalty’. It is a bronze statue dedicated to a faithful dog, called ‘ Kostya’, who survived a car accident in which its owners lost their lives. Like what happened in Japan with Hachiko, Kostya wouldn’t give up, waiting for its owners for seven consecutive years at the same spot. Under the snow and the rain, winter and summer, the dog stayed there, running up to all the passing cars and hoping one day to again see its beloved masters. Only his own death let him abandon his spot, but Tolyatti citizens unanimously wanted to honor the loyalty of Kostya, building a sculpture in his memory. I could say no place was more appropriate than Tolyatti, because the city’s namesake itself represents a great metaphor of loyalty: that of Palmiro Togliatti to the Soviet Union.
