The Alpa 38 is a 37.28ft masthead sloop designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built in fiberglass by Alpa Yachts (ITA) since 1976.

The Alpa 38 is a heavy sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is very stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is average. There is a good water supply range.

Review of Alpa 38

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 378.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Alpa 38 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Alpa 38 is typically equipped with an inboard Mercedes-Benz diesel engine at 48 hp (35 kW). Calculated max speed is about 6.3 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 189.0 liters (49 US gallons, 41 imperial gallons).

Meaning: if you load 188 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1052 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Alpa Yachts

Founded in 1956 by Danilo Cattadori, Alpa was one of the first builders of fiberglass sailing boats in Europe. Early on the company gained a reputation for it’s high quality fiberglass FLYING DUTCHMAN class boats. The first larger yacht was the ALPA 50, introduced in 1969. Far more successful was the Van de Stadt designed ALPA 6.7. This was followed by the 9.24, 9.5 and 11.5. Other yachts were the Alpa 42, Alpa 38, 19, 21, 27 and 34. Although the Alpa name was resurrected in 1990, the production sailboat operation closed it’s doors in 1978.
