Move over New York designers and LA conceptual artists. Step aside fashionistas and Hollywood celebrities. The yachting world floated into Art Basel Miami Beach across multiple platforms this week.

The seminal artistic and design event—which was virtual last year because of Covid—has typically trended towards fashion and the fine arts, but this week saw automakers, aircraft designers and now, yacht builders, claiming spaces in galleries and exhibit halls to show off new designs, or simply be a patron of the arts.

Sanlorenzo has been sponsoring different artists for the last four years, hosting displays of visual artists at Art Basel in Switzerland since 2017, as well as being the patron of art gatherings in Italy. This week, it became a presence at Art Basel Miami Beach. “Our owners are almost all art collectors,” said Sergio Buttiglieri, Sanlorenzo’s Style Director, giving one reason why the yacht brand decided to become visible in the art world. He also said the sponsorships was an attempt to open up the “closed environment” of the yachting industry, which often does not “appreciate the inclusion of other languages.”

On Wednesday, Sanlorenzo hosted a work by American artist McArthur Binion called “Cobalto,” which employed Italian blue inks, at the Collector’s Lounge in Miami.

Marco Segato, CEO of Sanlorenzo of the Americas, told Robb Report the yacht builder wanted to feature an American artist at the event. “His painting is also minimalist and conceptual, which is similar to what we do with many of our interior designs,” Segato said, adding that Sanlorenzo is including visual artists more often in its design work.

The builder also sponsored a panel discussion by Flash Art , a contemporary art magazine, during the event.

Polish luxury catamaran builder, Sunreef Yachts, planned to have a yacht on hand with an exterior wrapped by Skyler Grey, an American artist the company is sponsoring, but it didn’t arrive to the US on time. Grey also works with Lamborghini. The company had an event with Grey at Kiki on the River.

“Yacht design is a complex combination of creativity and engineering,” Sunreef CEO Francis Lapp told Robb Report . “Working with an artist is for us a way to take a fresh look at what we do. A change of perspective is vital, especially when you want to keep innovating. Pioneering concepts can only emerge once you go off the beaten path.”

The rendering below is a wild concept for the yachting world, but everyone would certainly know whose boat it is.

Tempest Energy Platform debuted its $500,000 jet ski and RIB package yesterday at TheArsenale. Lead designer J. David Weiss said the startup chose Art Basel Miami Beach because it has a “cosmopolitan and international presence.”

At first, showing the Maverick GT jet ski might seem odd at an event devoted to fine arts and fashion, rather than a conventional boat show. But the electric jet ski, which had its futuristic printed engine on display on the side, is so advanced in design and technology that Art Basel was the venue to make a news splash. It was designed as a toy for superyachts and rescue tool for surfers in giant waves.

The Maverick is at the “intersection of luxury, sustainability, and innovation,” said Weiss, which makes Art Basel a good launch point. “We’re eager to have those conversations as we share our vision with the world,” he said.

Cigarette Racing, which manufactures performance boats from its headquarters in Opa-Locka, near Miami, also hosted two events called “Boat to Basel.” Last night, artist Alec Monopoly custom-painted the hull of a Cigarette boat, while guest DJs Like Mike and Charly Jordan provided the music, at a hip venue called Maps Backlot.

The company is also sponsoring an auction today of seven NFTs, including a free Cigarette logo for participants. The auction will range from the logo to the top piece of NFT art, a virtual Cigarette 59-foot Tirranna offshore boat, complete with the sounds of six Mercury outboards. It is working with Tokenology.com, who organized the NFTs. A spokesperson said the NFT auction was part of Cigarette’s effort to “breathe new life into the brand,” moving from its a reputation as a performance boat builder to a more forward-looking company.

Most of the auction items will be accompanied by “extra entitlements,” said the spokesperson, to increase bidding. The winning bidder of the virtual Tirranna, for instance, will have a day on a real Tirranna sponsored by the boat builder, while other add-ons include Cigarette’s new line of clothing, which it will be promoting at the event.

Art Basel 2021 Miami Yacht Charter

Art Basel 2021 marks a return to the world of art, where we left off in 2020. The fair brought together 272 leading galleries from 33 countries and territories, presenting outstanding works in all media, from rare and historical masterpieces to new works by contemporary young authors. The numerous line-up of galleries from all over Europe has been joined by new and returning exhibitors from all over the world, including Asia, North and South America, the Middle East and Africa. For the first time, 24 galleries from cities such as Berlin, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, London, Milan, New York, Palm Beach and San Francisco took part in the exhibition.

What will be presented at Art Basel in Miami 2021?

Another partner of Art Basel is UBS, which is again the main sponsor of the exhibition. He presents works from his own corporate collection under the motto "Rethinking: a Better World". The bank wants to highlight the ability of art to bring about change and find new ways to present key ideas related to climate change, the environment and racial equality. The works are on display in the UBS Lounge (also available online until the end of November) and in the UBS Art Studio. Here, the “Ghost of a Dream" artist collective has placed three solar panels to show footage from the short film “Fast Forward" featuring 300 global voices calling for a more resurgent world.

You expect to come across big names in Art Basel, so I was excited to see the "Random Triangular Mirror” Anish Kapoor, presented by Regen Projects from Los Angeles. This British Indian sculptor, who has lived in London since the 1970s, has been smelting steel and resin to create this visually appealing image. Kapoor likes to use geometry and mathematical logic in his work, and this "mirror" seems to move with the viewer and looks almost ready to start rotating its distinctive shapes and colors.

The customized yacht will deliver cases of champagne to residences and boats along Biscayne Bay.

Following a 2020 hiatus due to the pandemic, Art Basel Miami Beach is returning to South Florida this December. The prestigious event will attract thousands of artists, gallery owners, critics and celebrities, eager to attend the fair’s must-visit exhibitions and legendary after parties. For those hoping to throw a shindig of their own, Dom Pérignon will be keeping the bubbly flowing with the launch of its exclusive yacht concierge service.

Between December 1 and 4 (coinciding with the art fair), the vintage champagne brand’s customized yacht will set sail, hand-delivering cases of fizz to anchored boats within Biscayne Bay and waterfront residences on the ultra-exclusive Venetian Islands; Star, Palm and Hibiscus Islands; and Sunset Islands.

Revelers can choose from three different packages and opt for drone footage of delivery for a truly memorable celebration. Leonardo DiCaprio is living it up in Miami, and was seen partying on Wednesday night on a Swedish billionaire’s yacht.

The “Titanic” star was spotted at biotech billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli’s floating bash aboard his $150 million superyacht, Vava II.

A source tells us DiCaprio — who split from Camila Morrone this summer, and has been linked to model Gigi Hadid — was hanging out with posse members Tobey Maguire and Helly Nahmad at the model-heavy bash hosted by his pal and de facto social director Richie Akiva.

We hear the party started after midnight and raged till 5a.m. with guests including Venus and Serena Williams, Jared Leto, art dealer Vito Schnabel, tennis pro Reilly Opelka, venture capitalist Vivi Nevo, diplomat Paolo Zampoli, and the requisite slew of “like one hundred” models.

One source told us, “There were like a hundred models. I have literally never seen more models in my life, no one was ‘normal’ looking. It was models, models, models.”

Another source tells us, “There was a group of girls that were wearing beaded dresses with nothing underneath at all, no underwear. You could see everything.”

A source tells us DiCaprio was heard chatting with Bertarelli — whose estimated worth is $8.5 billion , and whose family foundation focuses on marine conservation — about “saving the oceans.”

The “Great Gatsby” star has his own foundation and is an environmental activist.

Then again, a report in Fast Company last year stated, “A superyacht with a permanent crew, helicopter pad, submarines, and pools emits about 7,020 tons of CO2 a year, according to our calculations, making it by far the worst asset to own from an environmental standpoint.”

DiCaprio had previously attended a party on Bertarelli’s yacht over the summer in St. Tropez .

Earlier in the night, DiCaprio attended Sean Penn’s annual event for his Core charity at Soho Beach House, where “The Revenant” star auctioned off an art piece from his private collection.

The bash, which raised $1 million, brought out Diplo, Soleil Moon Frye, hotelier Alan Faena and Rande Gerber, and featured a performance by Wyclef Jean.

The private event took over the entire beach, leaving some Soho House members stuck indoors.

“There had to be 500 people outside trying to get in,” says a source. “There were so many cops and security on site for the event. It was like Fort Knox.”

DiCaprio has had a busy week: On Tuesday, he was spotted partying with “beautiful women” and friends in the VIP section at a party for Stone Island’s 40th anniversary at Miami’s RC Cola Plant.

Earlier the same day, he was spotted at Art Basel, eyeing edgy art .

Patrick Steffen: I’d like to start by charting your Art Basel journey . In 2022, you pulled off the extraordinary feat of staging the first edition of the fair in Paris in just eight months. What’s your most powerful memory from that year?

Clément Delépine : The intoxicating feeling of being part of a whole chorus. It was thrilling to experience not just the enthusiastic sense of anticipation, but also the real support we had. At the end of the fair, I was both exhausted and very excited, immensely happy and already nostalgic. Looking back, I understand more acutely the level of trust, solidarity, and madness we needed to succeed.

Do you still have this sense of audacity in 2024, just a few weeks before the opening of the third edition?

The sense of audacity is still there because, ultimately, it’s still early days. This year, we’ve completely reinvented the fair. The configuration has changed considerably, with a new name, Art Basel Paris; a new venue, the Grand Palais; and a growing number of galleries. So there’s lots that’s new for us. But among all these changes, one thing remains constant: our team. I’m very proud of that fact.

The renaming to Art Basel Paris represents a significant change.

The name Paris+ par Art Basel initially allowed us to take some liberties and experiment a bit. Today, the Art Basel brand is also a badge of excellence, and it is important for galleries to show they belong. We didn’t want to abandon the fair’s experimental dimension, but we nonetheless wanted it to be perceived as an Art Basel fair. Therefore, we started a conversation with our partners at the City of Paris and the Ministry of Culture. The Art Basel brand is powerful, and it can serve the city far better if it is fully embraced.

The 2024 edition of Art Basel Paris will be the first fair at the iconic Grand Palais, open to the public after major renovations.

Staging Art Basel at the Grand Palais is truly exciting. There may not be a more beautiful place in the world to hold a Modern and contemporary art fair. It is a real privilege. The thoughtful renovation of the building has resulted in a venue which is better suited to public events – a larger, more comfortable space. We will pay particular attention to the hospitality areas, starting with the Collectors Lounge, in order to meet the standards expected of an event of Art Basel’s stature. This year, we will host 195 galleries from 42 countries and territories, including 64 with spaces in France. Since 2023, we’ve added 40 galleries to the lineup, including Goodman Gallery , Kiang Malingue , Labor , Standard , Landau Fine Art , and Yares Art . We have also created a new sector called Premise, which brings together nine galleries with atypical curatorial projects, such as Bombon , Galerie Dina Vierny , and The Pill .

The 2024 Public program differs significantly from previous editions. Can you tell us more about that?

This year, we sought to offer the galleries more freedom by avoiding a rigid narrative framework. So, we redesigned the structure of our Public program. The Palais d’Iéna will present the special project ‘Tales & Tellers’, conceived by the artist Goshka Macuga and convened by Elvira Dyangani Ose, the director of MACBA [Museum of Contemporary Art] in Barcelona. This extraordinary project is made possible by Miu Miu, founded in 1993 by Miuccia Prada, which will be the Public Program Official Partner this year.

The Petit Palais will host a project by Jesse Darling , presented by Arcadia Missa , Chapter NY , Molitor, and Sultana , as well as the talks component of the public program, the Conversations , conceived this year by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou, which celebrates avant-gardes. We were keen to facilitate exchanges between the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais by pedestrianizing Avenue Winston Churchill , where works by Yayoi Kusama (presented by David Zwirner ), John Chamberlain ( Mnuchin Gallery ), and a house by Jean Prouvé ( Galerie Patrick Seguin ), will be displayed.

A new partnership with the Centre des Monuments Nationaux will unfold across three sites: the courtyard of the Hôtel de la Marine , where White Cube will present a work by the Greek artist Takis; a series of works in the Domaine National du Palais-Royal ; and an exhibition of major works by the late British sculptor Lynn Chadwick at the Hôtel de Sully , presented by Perrotin and curated by Matthieu Poirier.

We are also continuing our collaboration with our previous partners: the Chapelle des Petits-Augustins at Beaux-Arts de Paris will host work by the sculptor Jean-Charles de Quillacq (presented by Marcelle Alix ), while the Musée National Eugène-Delacroix will have an exhibition by Ali Cherri (presented by Almine Rech ), and nearby, in the courtyard of the Institut de France , Galerie Mitterrand will present a sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle. 

In 2022 and 2023, younger galleries were placed at the physical center of the fair. Will the Emergence sector, dedicated to emerging galleries and artists, have a special location this year, at the Grand Palais?

At the Grand Palais Éphémère, we deliberately chose to position the emerging galleries sector at the physical heart of the fair, with the goal of really highlighting them. One of the key innovations in the renovation of the Grand Palais is the reopening of the walkways, creating a continuous path along the balconies. We saw the opportunity of maintaining the central position of Emergence by putting the galleries up there, so they are visible from the entrance to the fair. This location offers a panoramic view, creating a compelling dynamic, and allowing the sector optimum visibility.

We’ve observed a real flow of emerging galleries being integrated into the main sector, including Emalin , LC Queisser , Marfa’ Projects , and sans titre .

Yes, it’s remarkable. At Art Basel, we are committed to supporting the development of galleries. The selection committee is determined to support the most vulnerable structures that take significant risks. We are increasing the number of galleries in the Emergence sector from 14 to 16, and while previously they each had 20 m², now they have 30 m². So in the end, the position of these galleries within the overall balance of the fair is strengthened.

Another major highlight is the new Premise sector, unprecedented within the Art Basel family, which is dedicated to the presentation of artworks created before 1900. Could you explain how it came about?

It seemed necessary to me to create, within the fair, a space for curatorial freedom that responds to this old trope within art history: sometimes the exhibition itself is a work of art. Numerous galleries operate in this way, in Paris and beyond, and we wanted to offer them a platform to stage interesting, precise, and thematic presentations that might not necessarily find their place in the other sectors of the fair. I wanted to invite visitors to pause for a moment, and discover strong, original projects and take the time to listen to the stories these galleries tell us.

Do you consider that the presence of Art Basel in Paris since 2022 has stimulated the French market?

The art market is anchored in reality. In a context of global uncertainty, the French market still holds its fourth place within the world. This is primarily thanks to the ongoing work of French galleries, across all sectors of the market, that have built this scene. Additionally, a number of major international galleries continue to look for spaces in Paris, and those who find them generally choose to open in real style. Their programs demonstrate the seriousness of their approach, and they show artists and present works rarely seen here. I believe there is real confidence in the French market. It’s worth noting that 50% of art transactions in the European Union take place in France – that is significant – and it reflects the resilience and dynamism of the market.

Among your main goals, there has always been a desire to reach a very wide audience. Do you feel you’re succeeding in that?

Yes. It’s something that matters a lot to me. The fair is not a museum, but I believe it still has an institutional responsibility. Making art accessible to everyone, for free, is an institutional challenge. We are committed to reaching audiences beyond the glass roof of the Grand Palais and facilitating a dialogue about art that goes beyond the fair.
