10 Best Catamaran Trips & Charters In Puerto Rico (2024)

  • Catamaran Trips & Charters

One of the best ways to explore Puerto Rico is by catamaran.

Whether you’re taking a trip to the east coast or the west coast, these catamarans have something special planned for their guests.

I am a Puerto Rico local and when I’m not writing or working, you can find me sailing the coastline.

In this article, we will cover the 10 best catamaran charters & trips in Puerto Rico:

I did the tour to icacos island and palomino with the captain Jay, pablito and I forgot the tall guy name but three of them were great! We had a blast on our tour. Drinks were amazing. The crew was making sure we were safe and the most important part make sure we had fun and we enjoy the tour. Thanks for everything !! I will be back.

The spot chosen for snorkeling was just amazing. Flamenco beach is definitely a must. But what made a difference is the awesome Sail Getaways crew. All of them were super attentive and nice with us. They went above and beyond to ensure our trip was perfect. Not once I had to order for a refill of my drink. 11 out of 10, 100% recommended, I'll definitely repeat.

Was all of our first time and it was so beautiful and fun. We got to see a barracuda, big jellyfish and a bunch of other little fish. We enjoyed the guys explaining everything, Oscar was fun and kept us entertained since the music wasn't working haha. Loved that lunch and alcohol was included, was so worth the money!

We went with a friend to visit Culebra Island and everything was very nice, the trip was very pleasant, the guides were very attentive, VERY good music and food, I recommend them, 10/10!!

Wonderful experience. Clear turquoise water, white sandy beaches, lush green islands, and a remarkable crew. It was a perfect day of swimming, snorkeling, and positive vibes all around. Highly recommend these guys.

My friend and I took the tour to Tamarindo and Flamenco beach and it was amazing. The weather was perfect which made the ride super smooth. We were a fortunate group to enjoy a beautiful day. It was our first time experience and we loved it. We are beginner swimmers (to say the least) and the gentlemen were kind enough to get in the water with us so we wouldn’t miss the opportunity. Everyone on the boat was super friendly and made us feel like family! It’s definitely a must do activity when visiting the island. Looking forward to many more!!!

It was soo much fun. We took off on time went snorkeling not many fishes but still a great experience then we went to the flamingo island and got 2 hours to ourself to enjoy l. Crew was super friendly and kept the drinks coming. Would totally recommend

Great quick getaway for our group of 13. Quick boat ride to snorkel, excellent fish viewing and lunch. Then a quick boat ride to Flamenco Beach to wander around. The staff was friendly, knowledgable, and patient.

We took the three-in-one catamaran getaway on New Year's Day with Omar and Arturo. Our group was 2 adults a 9 year old and a 5 year old. All of us had an amazing time. Omar and Arturo were awesome sailors/hosts/guides making sure they got us to Icacos safely for snorkeling, answered all our questions, taught us about Puerto Rico and even served us delicious drinks and snacks. A really beautiful afternoon/evening with super friendly guides, Omar and Arturo.

Out of everything we did in PR this was by far my favorite. The guys are such great entertainers and servers as well! Our drinks were never empty and the food was so good. My boyfriend and I had so much fun snorkeling and the island they take you to is so beautiful!

My friends and I booked this Catamaran trip as part of our recent vacation in San Juan. The staff was professional and fun, and the trip went really smoothly. Would definitely book again!

Very enjoyable! Carlos, our guide, was excellent! He was so knowledgable, informative, nice, patient and loved sharing his culture. He was an excellent driver and very personable. He even stopped at a local place for lunch before leaving the forest that we didn't expect. What a treat!

This trip was amazing! The staff on the vessel are top notch, very caring and made you feel welcomed, safe and comfortable. Willy does a great job helping you learn how to snorkel. This is a must do if you visit Puerto Rico. Had so much fun!!

🏆 OUR TOP PICK FOR A CATAMARAN DAY TRIP IN PUERTO RICO – Icacos Deserted Island Catamaran & Picnic Cruise

What to look for in a Catamaran Trip?

There are several things you need to check before finding your perfect catamaran trip. What is “perfect” for me, may be different than what is “perfect” for you.

  • Are you feeling social? Check to see if the tour is private (just your party) or a small group made up of different parties.
  • What is your budget? When shopping for catamaran tours, be sure and check the price. Specifically, check to see if the price is total, or per person. Enter the number of people you want to bring and see what the price is.
  • How much time do you have? Are you in Puerto Rico for 4 days ? Do you have only a few hours as a cruise stop? Make sure the tour you are looking at correlates with the time you have allotted.
  • Where are you? Check the details of the tour to see if the departure point is near where you will be staying.
  • What kind of vibe do you want? Are you looking for a party boat? A luxurious or romantic dinner? Do you want to swim? Check the details to make sure there are no unwelcome surprises on the day of your catamaran trip.
  • Read the reviews. I always read reviews before making a decision. Keep in mind, you can’t please everyone, so there will usually be at least one negative review for the tour operators. Don’t let one review discourage you, but instead, read through a few reviews and notice any patterns. If one subject comes up consistently, it is likely accurate.

What to pack on a Catamaran Day Trip in Puerto Rico

Now that you have decided which catamaran trip to book, you’ll need to know what to bring with you! Never fear, I’ve got you covered.

🤿 MASK AND SNORKEL

Most of these tours include snorkeling equipment, and that is totally fine to use theirs if you wish. However, if you want to bring your own for sanitary reasons, or to ensure they fit the way you like, you can do that too!

This mask and snorkel set is very popular, my kids love this one. I prefer this mask and snorkel combo with a GoPro attachment. I love how it frees up both hands while snorkeling!

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B092DM7SG1&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Shop Snorkel Masks

📱 Waterproof Phone Holder

Even though a lot of cell phones are water resistant, salt water can damage them. If you are wanting to take photos from the catamaran or while snorkeling get one of these inexpensive phone holders .

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B09PBB9MJQ&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Shop Waterproof Phone Holders Now

📸 Waterproof Camera

A cell phone can take pretty good photos, but if you want to snorkel and get incredible videos of tropical fish, bring a GoPro ! My GoPro is a must on all snorkeling trips! I even took it with me to swim with sharks in the Bahamas.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0B96H7LGX&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

🏝 Fast Drying Towel

One of the best things to bring on your catamaran trip is a lightweight and fast drying towel . These don’t take up much room in your bag and will be a great item to have for the ride back to land.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07VVNJMRG&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Purchase a Light Weight Fast Drying Towel

☀️ Reef Safe Sunscreen

If you are heading anywhere in the Caribbean you definitely need sunscreen. Be sure to only wear reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the reefs and marine life. I love this combo because it comes with an after-sun gel too! Don’t forget chapstick with SPF protection!

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07BJBP7JN&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Buy Reef Safe Sunscreen and Chapstick Here

👙Rash Guard or SwimSuit

Of course, you will need a swimsuit if you planning on spending the day on the water. Another good thing to think about is purchasing a rash guard . This can be in place of your swim suit, or over the top. Rash guards are lightweight, dry quickly, and help protect you from sunburn. This limits the amount of sunscreen you need to put on as well!

🧢 Hat

Grab a hat to help keep the sun off your face, but also to control your hair after being in the water and wind! This one is super cute, or this one may be more your style.

➡️ Check this hat out , or this one instead

🎒Beach Bag

Grab a cute beach bag to carry all of your things on to the catamaran and beach! I like to bring a pretty large bag , and that way I can keep everything in it and have room for a few souvenirs too!

🏖 Floaties

Some tours provide floats or tubes to get in the water with, but you cant guarantee they will have enough for everyone or they will be one you like. I know a float isn’t something most people get excited about but let me tell you how OBSESSED I am with these floaties !

They pack up so small, weigh nothing, are easy to inflate, and are so comfortable in the water. They are a must for me when making my Caribbean packing list !

Frequently asked questions

Where are you located.

We are a convenient 5-10 minute drive from the major hotels in the San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde area in Puerto Rico. We are located in San Juan Bay Marina at Slip A72. If you are taking a cab, ask your driver to take you to San Juan Bay Marina and reference where the Sizzler Restaurant is at. Once at the Marina, walk through the boatyard towards the lower part of Sizzler Restaurant. Once at sea level, go past a Jetski rental kiosk towards the long dock with boats on either side. Our slip is on the left past the white gate that leads to the dock. Slip numbers are marked on the floor.

How do I book a sail?

You may book online here, or by clicking any of the “book now” buttons. We ask that you call, text, or email us for same-day bookings to ensure availability even if the calendar doesn’t show it. Online bookings are handled through a secure and encrypted provider accepting most major credit cards.

How should I dress?

For daysails we recommend cool, light clothing, hat, sunglasses and sunblock. While San Juan Bay has very calm waters and you will usually not get wet, there is always the possibility of some small splashes of water. Sunset sails have usually calmer breeze and cooler temperatures so you may dress more comfortably, however we do recommend light clothing. If you choose to go out into the ocean, the possibilities of getting wet are more likely as we will be sailing in bigger seas. No shoes allowed on-board.

At what time should I arrive for my sail?

We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your sail for a proper safety briefing and preparations. Sails depart sharp on time. Plan to be on time as in consideration to others that may be present we can not delay departure time. Failure to be on time for departure will result in forfeiting full fare or a $50 rebooking fee.

How many passengers are allowed on a boat?

We can accommodate 2-6 passengers for a personal, intimate experience. If you wish your sail to be private you may opt for the Private Charter or reserve the boat for your group. If you are sailing alone we ask that you contact us so we may schedule you with a current group.

Do I have to aid in handling the boat?

Your crew will take care of all the boat handling maneuvers so you may sit back and relax, but you are welcome to take part if you want a more hands-on experience.

Will I get seasick?

As we usually sail in very calm waters, the possibilities of getting seasick are almost zero. However, if you have gotten motion sickness at other times, we do recommend taking some remedies beforehand.

What drinks are included?

We offer complimentary soda, water, local beer, rum & coke and special rum punch for adults over 18 years of age. Sunset sails also include Spanish Cava or Prosecco.

Are there age restrictions to sail?

We welcome everyone to enjoy the wonderful experience of sailing! However, US Coast Guard requires children under 13 to wear a lifejacket at all times. There is also certain level of physical exertion that may take place to board and move around so we advise caution for the elderly and persons with mobility issues and serious medical conditions.

Can I bring my own music?

Of course! We encourage you to do so. Our speaker is bluetooth ready so you may connect your own device and use your personal playlist. We use Spotify and Pandora and may look up your favorite station.

Are the booking times shown here the only ones available for a sail?

While the times shown are our standard offerings we are always available for special requests. Give us a call or email us to make special arrangements

What If I have to cancel my reservations?

We have a 48 hour cancellation notice policy for full refund. 48 hours or less cancellations forfeit 50% fare. 24 hour cancellations forfeit full fare. No shows, late to departure time or same-day booking cancellations will forfeit 100% fare.

What happens if my sail is cancelled due to weather?

We want you to enjoy a great experience while sailing with us so we would reschedule your sail for another day when the weather is ideal. If this would not be possible due to your travel plans, we would offer a full refund. The decision to cancel due to weather rests solely on the Captain. Tropical weather can change quite rapidly so some decisions to cancel might be last minute, however we always take into consideration your time and alternate plans so we try to always cancel at least an hour in advance from our scheduled departure time.

Anything else I should know?

Just be ready for a great sailing experience! If you do have any additional questions, please feel free to call, text or email us and we will gladly clear up any doubts.

We had an incredible experience on East island Excursion to Cayo Ikakos ! The boat ride was scenic, the island was breathtaking, and the food was absolutely amazing. Our entire family, including the kids, loved every moment of it. The hospitality was exceptional, and we can’t wait to come back for another memorable trip . Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a perfect getaway!

Keep up the good work.

Recently booked a snorkeling tour to Icacos and it was amazing. The prices were fair and they were able to provide transportation from Viejo San Juan for an additional cost. The crew was amazing and took care of us. They were very attentive and they kept the drinks coming. The water conditions weren’t the best for snorkeling but they did their best to find us s spot. Accessing the beach required to swim from the boat. It wasn’t ideal but made it fun. I intend to book again on my next trip to PR. Next time it’ll be Culebra. Keep up the good work. I would love to hear more reguetón and more Latin music next time.

15 Incredible Excursions in Puerto Rico

Updated September 11, 2023

There are so many amazing things to do in Puerto Rico. Want to run with wild horses? Check. Swim with sea turtles? Check check. Dive among old shipwrecks? Check, check, and check! Basically, Puerto Rico is packed with amazing excursions—and these are 15 of the best. Questions? Send us a message!

1. Dive among ancient shipwrecks in Rincon

There’s something so cool and so eerie about shipwrecks (after all, we’ve all seen/cried through Titanic). A moment in time, perfectly and tragically preserved. Although there’s plenty of interest in the town of Rincon, some of its most fascinating aspects are found beneath its killer waves. Take a jaw-dropping journey beneath the surface to see historic shipwrecks off Rincon’s coast .

2. Embark on a rum tasting quest at the Bacardi Rum Distillery

Going to the Bacardi Rum Factory is one of the great Puerto Rico excursions

You know what? Off-the-beaten attractions are great, but big sites (especially when they involve rum) can also make for a fantastic excursion. In the complete opposite direction from Cueva del Indio is the Bacardi Rum Distillery , aka Casa Bacardi. Here, visitors can learn about Bacardi’s history, take a mixology tour, and, of course, taste a lot of rum.

3. Experience history up close at La Cueva del Indio

No need to invent a flux capacitor to go back to another era. In Puerto Rico, it takes only an excursion to the incredibly cool Cueva del Indio. One of the most rad places in Puerto Rico to visit, these caves are full of petrographs made by Puerto Rico’s native Taino people (long before Columbus “discovered” the New World). You can climb down into the cave and see them yourself—no museum necessary.

Local tip : There used to be a ladder that visitors could use—it's since vanished. So be careful as you climb down.

4. Kayak with the wild monkeys of Cayo Santiago

Some of the coolest things to do in Puerto Rico involve wildlife, and Cayo Santiago (AKA Monkey Island) is no exception. These monkeys have a colorful history—they are the ancestors of monkeys brought from India for scientific research in 1938. Tourists are not allowed to set foot on the island (it’s just for monkeys and their human researchers friends), but visitors can kayak, snorkel, or swim through crystal-blue water to say hi from just offshore.

5. Go on a caffeine expedition through Puerto Rico’s coffee zone

Don’t let Puerto Rican nights dim your days! Puerto Rico is known for rum, but (thankfully) it’s also an excellent destination for coffee. There are a ton of historic coffee plantations spread across the island (colloquially known as the Coffee Zone), making coffee-focused excursions a great way to tour Puerto Rico. Many of PR’s best spots (both plantations and cafes) fly well under the radar.

6. Explore El Yunque rainforest (and keep an eye out for parrots!)

Exploring El Yunque is one of the great Puerto Rico excursions

Another major draw among Puerto Rico excursions is the island’s out-of-this-world nature. El Yunque rainforest is the only tropical rainforest in the United States. It’s small, as rainforests go, but home to an incredibly diverse variety of wildlife, including colorful wild parrots. Free to visit; El Yunque is full of spectacular trails that make for a gorgeous rainforest adventure (not to mention a nice break from the Puerto Rican sun).

7. Bask upon the spectacular beaches of Isla Culebra

Journeys to Puerto Rico’s awesome beaches are among the best excursions in town, and Isla Culebra should top the (very long) list of the best. Accessible by ferry or by plane, Isla Culebra is home to Flamenco Beach— one of the best beaches in the world . The white sand and clear water make this a gorgeous stop on any Puerto Rico itinerary.

8. Run with wild horses and see the glittering bay on Vieques

When it comes to amazing stuff to do in Puerto Rico, an adventure to Vieques absolutely has to be mentioned. This little island, located off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, is full of activities for day and night. While the sun is up, explore the island’s black sand beaches and admire the 2,000 wild horses who call the Vieques their home . You can run among them—they like to come down to the beach for a swim!

But if anything, the island becomes even more magical once the sun goes down. The gorgeous waters of Mosquito Bay burst into blue light thanks to the bioluminescence just beneath the surface. Visitors can admire this incredible natural phenomenon from afar, or book a boat tour to see Mosquito Bay up close.

Pro tip: The ferry schedule to Vieques changes a lot.

9. Stuff yourself on the Pork Highway

Looking for something both bizarre and awesome to make your Insta followers jealous? La Ruta del Lechon is the answer. Roughly translated to “the pork highway” this stretch of road along Route 184 is lined with vendors selling lechon , whole roasted pig. It’s not just pork (although lechon is definitely the star of the show)—visitors can find tons of local food to try. Plus, many of the outdoor restaurants feature live music, dancing, and (lots of) drinking all day and all night.

10. Adventure through Puerto Rico’s dramatic dry forest

Some of the greatest adventures in Puerto Rico involve exploring the island’s amazing hikes. Bosque Estatal de Guanica is one of the best. An easy day trip from Ponce, the Guanica dry forest is, well, the opposite of a rain forest (that is, it hardly rains, and plant life has adapted to a drier climate). It provides an incredible opportunity to enjoy a different kind of nature. This is a great place to hike—most visitors make a beeline for Fort Capron, which offers some spectacular views.

Pro tip: Be sure to pack plenty of water. This is “dry” forest, after all!

11. Shimmy down to the Survival Beach caves

Going to a survival beach cave is one of the great Puerto Rico excursions

If an excursion to La Cueva del Indio whets your cave-going appetite, then the Survival Beach caves in Aguadilla on the northwest coast will definitely delight. This gorgeous rock formation, stretched along a gorgeous white sand beach, is one of the coolest sites in Puerto Rico. The hike to the beach is intense but worth it. Wear good shoes, bring water (and definitely your phone, this place is ultra-Instragrammable) and enjoy the gorgeous seclusion of this natural wonder.

Pro tip: the current here is strong, so be cautious about taking a dip.

12. Ferry out to Caja de Muertos for beaches, hikes, and wildlife

Caja de Muertos , which translates as “coffin island”, may sound like a destination out of a horror movie but, believe us, it is anything but. Home to five of Puerto Rico’s most stunning beaches, it’s a great destination to enjoy nature away from the bustle of the main island. Hop on the ferry from Ponce for an afternoon island adventure.

Plus the ferry itself is a fun activity for the whole family! You can see the island’s gorgeous coast, breathe in the cool sea air, and enjoy the serene feeling of gliding across the waves. Once on the island, there’s plenty of wildlife to see (pelicans! turtles!) as well as some incredible hikes.

13. Switch it up—saunter to San Juan or pop over to Ponce

Ponce is one of the great Puerto Rico excursions

Most visitors will stay in one of two of Puerto Rico’s largest cities: San Juan or Ponce. Whichever acts as the home base, a great excursion is taking a day or two to see the other! There are obviously a ton of things to do in San Juan, Puerto Rico’s largest city: great museums, plenty of amazing food, and spectacular nightlife. But you shouldn’t miss Ponce!

Ponce is also full of things to do—considered the “Jewel of the South”, it has some of the most incredible architecture on the island, and some of Puerto Rico’s best rum . It’s totally worth it to switch things up and spend a day or two in either Ponce or San Juan.

14. Dive beneath the waves to see the Parguera Wall

Puerto Rico obviously has a ton of great sites on land—but did you know that you could also sightsee in Puerto Rico under the sea ( under sea )? If you’re scuba-certified and looking for some great underwater tourism, look no further than the Parguera Wall. It’s a beautiful black coral reef about six miles the southwest coast. The spectacular reefs and marine life will give you a whole new perspective on Puerto Rico.

15. Commune with nature at the Humacao Nature Preserve

Some of the best things to do in Puerto Rico have to do with nature—wonderful hikes, gorgeous beaches, and tons and tons of colorful wildlife. So obviously, then, the Humacao Nature Preserve on the southeast coast makes an excellent excursion. Free and open to the public, you can visit with resident iguanas, local frogs, and tons of other wildlife. Plus, there are a lot of trails for hiking or biking (you can rent a bike or a kayak!) and some simply spectacular views.
