Family Guy S 18 E 1 Yacht Rocky » Recap

Peter and his family go on a cruise that soon becomes a parody of The Poseidon Adventure .

This episode contains examples of:

• Aborted Arc : The plot about Peter potentially getting fired from the brewery is dropped with no resolution less than halfway into the episode. Later episodes more or less resolve it by showing him still working at the brewery, so he clearly wasn't fired.
• As Himself : Nick Viall (whose 39th birthday this episode aired on), Kenny Loggins and Alan Parsons.
• Cruise Episode : About halfway through the episode it changes scenery and is set on a cruise.
• Disproportionate Restitution : After the others leave him for dead, an angry Brian doggy shakes over them, getting them wet. The others are disgusted and insist they're even.
• Halfway Plot Switch : The episode starts off with a plot about Peter potentially getting laid off, but then he has a panic attack and Dr. Hartman prescribes some "Yacht Rock" for Peter to listen to, leading to a plot about the Griffins (along with Cleveland, Joe, and Quagmire) on a cruise. Then, the episode switches plots again and becomes a parody of Poseidon .
• No Ending : The episode climaxes with everyone caught in a Drowning Pit looking as though they're going to drown... until the scene cuts to everyone at the Griffin house, perfectly okay, with no explanation as to how they got out of there. Peter : Man, that was crazy .
• Overly Long Gag : Shortly after the ship flips over, Meg shows up on a balcony introducing her new love interest (who got decapitated earlier) to her family. The boy's head falls off the balcony and Meg asks Chris to get it for her. Cue about 30 seconds of Chris trying and failing to throw the head back up to Meg before succeeding.
• Take That! : The end of the episodes features Casey Kasem , who acknowledges that he's dead and asks his wife to bury him already. note  Kasem's death was the subject of a protracted legal battle between his second wife and his children. As a result of legal issues, Kasem went unburied until 6 months after his death.
• Unexplained Recovery : At the end of the episode, Peter, his family, and his friends are in a situation where it looks like they are going to drown, but the camera suddenly cuts to everyone perfectly fine at the Griffin’s house.

"The Salesman" , AKA Jim Kaplan is a conman, characterized by his permanent wide insincere smile. He has a bank and tattoo parlor. Many of his cons are directed at Peter since he is gullible and easy to fool.

He first appeared as a blonde in " I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar ". He sent letters to most of Spooner Street , including the Griffin Family , Cleveland Brown , Joe Swanson , Glenn Quagmire , and Fat Albert , informing them they have won a boat and a timeshare. When Peter and Lois Griffin go to the seminar to finalize the boat deal, Kaplan dupes Peter into choosing the Mystery Box, which contained two tickets to the Chuckle Bucket Comedy Club . Everyone else on Spooner Street outsmarted Kaplan and rightfully chose the boat.

In " There's Something About Paulie ", he runs a car dealership and calls himself Doug . This time, he convinces Peter to buy an incompletely constructed used car.

He was a sports agent in " Ready, Willing, and Disabled ", willing to give his clients anything he owns to get them to sign a contract.

In " When You Wish Upon a Weinstein " He sold Peter Griffin volcano insurance, but when Lois discovers what he has done, she sends Peter to get the money back.

In " Hell Comes to Quahog ", he sold Peter a tank, when he took Meg out to buy a car. She never got to drive the tank.

He sold the Griffins a TiVo in " Bango Was His Name Oh ", the second segment of Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story .

Seth MacFarlane's raunchy animated sitcom Family Guy has become a TV institution, and the beloved Fox series is already renewed for season 23. Debuting in 1999, Family Guy follows the wacky adventures of the Griffins, an average family who live in the fictional town of Quahog, Rhode Island. Noted for its distinctly politically incorrect humor, Family Guy follows in the footsteps of its predecessors like The Simpsons , by spoofing the American nuclear family and all of the trappings of modern life. However, Family Guy sets itself apart by never straying away from hot-button topics.

Though Family Guy was briefly canceled after season 3 , the series was revived a few years later and has continued for more than 20 years as an unstoppable TV juggernaut. Never particularly popular with critics, the show has had some minor success on the awards circuit and has snagged a few Emmys along the way. Much like its contemporaries South Park and The Simpsons , Family Guy may be in its twilight years, but its place as a genuine staple of Aughts popular culture is undeniable. Even if it has fallen off a bit, Family Guy isn't stopping anytime soon.

Family Guy is set to take jabs at the United States Supreme Court, parody movies like Top Gun , and poke fun at itself with plenty of self-referential jokes.

As the wait continues for the return of the beloved raunchy comedy, the latest news comes in the form of a trailer for Family Guy season 23 . Released during the Animation Domination portion of 2024's San Diego Comic-Con, the six-minute teaser features various hilarious sequences from the upcoming season . Proving that the show's classic irreverent humor is still alive and well, Family Guy is set to take jabs at the United States Supreme Court, parody movies like Top Gun , and poke fun at itself with plenty of self-referential jokes.

Fox Renewed Seasons 22 & 23 Simultaneously

MacFarlane explained that Family Guy has reached " escape velocity ", suggesting it can end at any moment, but that moment isn't set in stone.

Fans haven't had to wait in suspense for the fate of Family Guy season 23, and Fox renewed the show for two additional seasons in 2021 that guaranteed at least 23 seasons. Though season 22's numbers were down, the show is still popular enough to justify Fox's bold decision to green-light it for two years at a time. Seth MacFarlane has spoken about the future of Family Guy after season 23 , and the creator isn't interested in ending things as long as the ratings continue to remain high.

Family Guy season 22 concluded on April 17, 2024.

MacFarlane explained that Family Guy has reached " escape velocity ", suggesting it can end at any moment, but that moment isn't set in stone. Family Guy 's contemporaries have been able to carve out nice places for themselves even if they aren't the titanic powerhouses that they once were, and Fox will probably keep a place in its lineup for the show for as long as MacFarlane wants to do more.

At this point, I don’t see a good reason to stop. People still love it. It makes people happy and it funds some good causes. It’s a lot of extraneous cash that you can donate to Rainforest Trust and you can still go out to dinner that night. There was a time when I thought, it’s time to wrap it up. At this point, we’ve reached escape velocity. I don’t know that there’s any reason to stop at this point unless people get sick of it. Unless the numbers show that people just are, “Eh, we don’t care about ‘Family Guy’ anymore.” But that hasn’t happened yet. Also, I don't watch the show so if anyone wants to take another look at this article for anything I missed that would be great.

The Show Isn't Returning In Fall 2024

In a shocking development for the long-running animated hit, it was announced in May 2024 that Family Guy season 23 would not be part of Fox's fall slate . This breaks a two-decades-old tradition, and makes way for a new animated series, Universal Basic Guys . Despite this, season 23 is expected to be a mid-season addition and will arrive sometime in early 2025.

Coming as something of an appetizer for the upcoming season, a Family Guy Halloween special will debut on October 14, 2024 (via Variety ) and will feature Glen Powell as a guest star. A Christmas special will also arrive later in 2024, but an exact date hasn't been revealed yet. Both specials will air exclusively on Hulu, and not on Fox.

Expect The Griffin Family To Return

The main cast of Family Guy hasn't changed much since the show began airing in 1999, and the ensemble for season 23 will probably be the same as season 22 . One guaranteed return is Seth MacFarlane as Peter, Stewie, Brian, and Glenn Quagmire, and a season of Family Guy without its creator wouldn't be the same.

Likewise, the rest of the voice cast will be unchanged, including the likes of Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, and Seth Green in the various roles they've played for more than 20 years. Family Guy 's various cameos are much harder to predict, but fans can expect to hear a few celebrity guest voices in season 23.

How a Middle-Class Family Is Exploring the World by Yacht

Ever since a fortune cookie I got when I was 16 told me I'd be a world traveler, I've explored every corner of the globe I could reach, from the gondolas of Venice to the rickshaws of Asia, the placid waters of Lake Lucerne to the soaring structures of Machu Picchu.

But then came three kids, an SUV, a house in the suburbs of Adelaide, Australia, and a literal white picket fence. And on a middle-class budget, I grew to accept that I would have to be content with the life I had chosen. Child-care bills, a mortgage, private-school tuitions and a crazy work schedule at a midlevel government job to pay for it all had replaced exotic vacations. Those aren't complaints, just facts.

A documentary called "Maidentrip" that we came across while flipping channels in November 2015 changed all that.

It was the story of a young girl sailing around the world, exploring foreign lands on her own boat. We had no idea traveling and living on a yacht was even possible, assuming it was reserved for pioneers, ship captains or the rich and famous. We were none of the above. We'd never owned a boat and had little savings in the bank.

Yet the idea of our family exploring the world on a yacht took hold.

For two years, we scrimped and saved until we had enough to buy ourselves an old yacht on the other side of the world, sight unseen, off the Caribbean island of Grenada. (We also saved for five airline tickets to get us there -- this is where airline miles can be very handy .) Our new home was a 1984 Moody 47. She was solid, seaworthy and had two large cabins, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living area.

We rented out our house and convinced our bosses to give us two years leave without pay. We also radically altered our budget in the years leading up to the journey. We canceled subscriptions and memberships, applied for promotions, worked overtime and hosted international students in our home. We refinanced our mortgage and borrowed enough to supplement our savings. Eventually we had enough to buy our $90,000 boat outright with some cash left over for upgrades.

In the meantime, we researched and planned, attending sea survival, seamanship and first-aid courses where we could. We bought ourselves a 21-foot sailboat and learned to sail in our local bay, and crewed on larger yachts at the local yacht club every week. We even enlisted the help of a family of five who had lived aboard a yacht for 10 years themselves.

When we were finally ready in February 2018, we flew to the Caribbean in high spirits — the boat was all our family had talked about for two years. Yet we were also a bundle of nerves, since we were fully aware we didn't really know what we were doing. Heck, we still had no idea how to anchor or moor a 47-foot yacht! But we ignored the naysayers, and my husband, our three boys (now 9, 7 and 4) and I were unshakeable.

We visited 12 countries in our first 12 months and are still sailing. It certainly hasn't been all sunshine and cocktails. On our very first sail from the main island of Grenada to Carriacou, our engine stopped working in high winds and rough seas. We had to be towed to safety in the dark, wondering if we'd made a big, colossal mistake. Soon after, we ran aground on Union Island and needed to be pulled free by local fishermen.

The obstacles we've overcome as a family have taught us resilience, and our family bond is stronger than ever. Home schooling has created opportunities for discussions we never had at home, and the children's confidence has soared. We are healthier than we've ever been, and we've never felt endangered while at sea or on land. That's partial due to the safety training courses we took before we even purchased on our boat.

Our children once always had their hair short and their clothes neat but now look wild and carefree, with shaggy blond mops and tanned skin. We've hiked mountains and volcanoes, peered into craters and gone swimming with turtles as they grazed gracefully on seagrass. We've walked barefoot around deserted islands, climbed palm trees as our wet hair dripped down our backs and sand covered our feet. We've marveled at iguanas basking in the sun and danced to calypso tunes under starry skies.

Truthfully, the farther we travel, the less we want to return to the rat race we once knew. On the water, we are free from schedules and expectations. Free from judgment and little things like haircuts and ironed school uniforms. We are the captains of our own ship figuratively and literally, free to use our time as we please.

The days aboard Roam, our home on the sea, are precious and irreplaceable. Living this way has truly opened our eyes to what's important in life.

You Can Sail the World With Your Family, Too

We weren't sailors or hedge-fund babies, yet here I am, writing to you from the cabin of our boat. We had a dream, so we planned and made it work. There's nothing inherently special or unique about our situation, so if we can do it, you can, too. Don't wait until it's too late.

I don't mean to oversimplify the process of selling everything and sailing the world. There are a lot of interim steps and tons of planning and learning, but all you need to get started is a dream and the guts to make it happen.

Here's how to begin drawing up your plan for traveling aboard a yacht with your family:

• Decide whether you want to sail the world.
• Overhaul your entire budget and look for every little way you can scrimp and save. Be prepared to make sacrifices.
• Set a date -- this is an important part of the plan. Don't make it too far away, but give yourself enough time to save and prepare. Two to five years should be enough.
• Be honest about what you're getting into. Sailing can be dangerous even without children involved, so you need to have a frank discussion with your family about the responsibilities you'll all be taking on not just as a family but as members of a sailing crew.
• If you don't already know how to sail, pay a visit to your local yacht club and offer to crew in their weekly yacht races.
• Start reading. Research everything from boat types (for example, do you want a monohull or catamaran?) to storm tactics, toilet maintenance to chainplates.
• Teach your kids to swim and get them comfortable in the water.
• Learn as much as you can about diesel mechanics and electrical and plumbing systems. If you are in a remote place, you will need to be able to fix your own boat.
• Consider selling your home or renting it out. Look into Airbnb or student rentals to increase your return. ( Thinking of becoming an Airbnb host? Here's how to do it right. )
• Apply for leave without pay if it's an option. Having a safety net is always a good idea. If your job allows remote work, talk to your company about whether it's possible to work remotely (as long you're honest with yourself that internet access and time zones will often work against you). In some cases, you may have to leave your current job entirely to make this dream a reality, so build up that savings cushion as much as you can.

Instead of talking too much about the sailing technicalities, I’ll focus on practicals, touching on the overall features of each catamaran and what makes them ideal for cruising with a family. 

Although Bali cruisers are more often used for charter boats, they have thrived in the hands of private owners. The helm and lack of a full flybridge lead to greater visibility and stability, making it easier to sail the boat in rougher conditions. There is also a platform running between the two hulls for extra accessibility. 

The Bali 4.1 is a relatively small ship for sailing with a family but still offers three to four cabins and a remarkably spacious master cabin. 

It has the extra interior volume and a spacious galley and saloon. This ship is created to sail in comfort while handling adverse weather conditions safely.

While these yachts are not as energy-efficient as some of their counterparts, they can make a journey shorter and more enjoyable with their speeds and engine capabilities. 

The saloon on the Nautitech 47 Power has a 360-degree view from large windows, and with four cabins and extra-large living spaces, you’ll be able to fit your entire family into this boat and still have room.

Outremer is a catamaran brand known for speed , as well as the comfort of life. 

The Outremer 5X is a huge boat measuring almost 60 feet (18.29 meters) long, with options for three or four cabins. The rest of the space is used for the lounge and living areas, the galley, and ample storage space.

Family cruisers: The best multihulls for space and comfort at sea

The market is dominated by Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot and Leopard, who have order books that read like cricket scores. But companies like Bali and Bavaria/Nautitech are also becoming increasingly popular as they bring a more open and exterior focused layout.

Just launched: Leopard 50

In its guise as the ‘own brand’ catamaran of Sunsail and the Moorings, Leopard has been extraordinarily successful. The Cape Town yard of Robertson and Caine has turned out over 1,500 catamarans 
and almost all of them have been sailed to their new homes around the globe – a phenomenal calling card, when you think about all those South Atlantic miles.

The new 50 replaces the popular 48, updating it with a host of features that have proved popular in the smaller models. From the outside, the boat has been restyled rather than redesigned. The topsides have been jazzed up with a stripe of smoked glass that conceals bigger portlights. The coachroof 
is more angular and square. This has the advantage of increasing the window area in the saloon, including 
a full-length skylight.

Leopard makes a point of putting the table and seating at the back of the saloon and the galley at the front. The logic is to connect indoor and outdoor social spaces – something that is enhanced by the sliding door and windows at the aft end. This leaves enough space for another unique feature among its series catamarans: a weathertight door out of the front of the saloon into the forward cockpit.

The ‘lounge’ version can still manage 40° off the true wind, and the polars predict a top speed of just over 12 knots. The key difference for the market over the 48 is its ability to offer five cabins with crew quarters, allowing four cabins to be sold.

The other key changes have taken place “under the bonnet”, as naval architect Alexander Simonis of Simonis Voogd puts it. Carbon-infused ring frames have been used to make the boat stiffer in key areas, making the more open-plan layout possible without adding too much weight. It is a technique that was successfully pioneered on larger racing cats.

First impressions

The European press launch for the Leopard 50 hinted at the phenomenal space this new model offers. At one time I counted 31 people on the aft deck, most sitting comfortably!

And it was the space that continued to amaze me as I walked through the boat. Not so much the colossal volume in the hulls – that’s almost expected in today’s family/charter cats – but more the amount of social space there is on deck and the separation between these areas. There is room enough for one family to chill in the forward cockpit, for example, another on the flybridge, one in the saloon and a fourth in the aft cockpit!

At the same time, I appreciate how Simonis Voogd has retained the stepped hulls to keep a narrow entry but beam above the waterline. Launched into the unforgiving waters off Cape Town, these cats are still expected to sail to weather. Visibility from the single helm station will be an issue – indeed forward-and aft-facing cameras are fitted to aid berthing manoeuvres.

The standard level of fit-out and finish also looked good. Some 17 boats were sold in first three days of the Miami Boat Show, half of which are destined for The Moorings charter fleets.
