Sailing Holidays in Greece

Experience the magic of sailing in the Ionian Islands on your sailing holidays in Greece. The Ionian Sea, with its roots in Greek mythology and its border with Albania to the north, welcomes you to explore its fantastic beaches and picturesque ports and marinas.

The Ionian Islands, including Corfu, Paxos, Antipaxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos, create an ideal backdrop for your sailing adventure. This “other Greece” offers a unique charm, distinct from the Aegean islands, running parallel to the western Greek mainland coast.

For those who are seeking to charter a sailing yacht in Greece, the Ionian Sea is a true gem. With fairways shielded from strong winds and numerous secluded anchorages, some accessible only by yacht, it’s not just a haven for classic bareboat yacht charters but also a perfect destination for flotilla holidays. Whether you’re a novice, a family with children, or an experienced sailor, the Ionian Sea promises a memorable experience.

Followed by lunch and swim stops on the way to Kefalonia, which is the  largest island in the  Ionians, boasting a breath-taking natural landscape with exotic beaches, picturesque fishing villages and magical underground caves, Kefalonia is one of the best destinations in Greece for nature lovers! Overnight stop at Sami.

2 Week Ionian Sailing Tour

Greek Sailing Adventure

Safety briefing and Introduction, familiarization, relaxed evening.  This itinerary applies to both the 2 Week Ionian Sailing Tours (Supported Flotilla and Skippered Charter).

Cruising in the direction of Nidri and Ithaka… Following the one week cruise itinerary to Sami on Kefalonia.

Sailing south to Poros with swim and lunch stops along the way, stopping overnight in the village port. Poros is located towards the southern end of the east coast of Kefalonia and is the primary link from Kefalonia to mainland Greece with a daily service to Kilini. Poros is not one of the busiest tourist resorts with most visitors favoring the other more commercial resorts in the south west region. However, Poros has a more authentic, traditional Greek feel to it which can be exactly what some people are looking for.

Greek Sailing Adventure

Days 4. Depart after breakfast.

Sailing south towards Zakinthos island and to the bay and port at Agios Nikilaos where we normally stop for the night in this sheltered bay to enjoy a relaxing evening while we plan our circumnavigation of the island. Zakinthos is one of the most exotic Greek islands. Sitting in the heart of the mesmerizing Ionian sea, it boasts a wonderful natural landscape and enchanting, secluded beaches, hilltop villages, traditional monasteries and dreamy natural landscapes.

Greek Sailing Adventure

Days 5 and 6 Circumnavigate the island.

The direction depends on the weather and winds. The main attractions on Zakinthos are Turtle Beach and the famous bay with the shipwreck. Marathonisi island, also known as Turtle Island is located in Laganas Bay, a few miles away from the south east coast of Zakinthos. The island is a habitat only for sea turtles and it has been a place for their mating and egg laying. The island is covered with dense trees and has two beaches, one is sandy and the other is a rocky beach. You can get down at the beach, explore the island, and watch the turtles. Ship Wreck bay is on the other western side of Zakinthos. Overnight stops can be in the port of Zakinthos and other areas around the island, like; Keri Port and port Vromi, but most of the south and west, we would need to anchor as there are few ports to stop in.

Greek Sailing Adventure

Sailing north with swim and lunch stops along on the east coast of Ithaka. Arriving in Frikes village port for the evening and back into the return leg.

Day 8. Depart after breakfast.

Sailing to Kastos and spending the night in this village.

Day 9. Depart after breakfast.

Local sailing to Kalamos, and  spending the night in this village.

Day 10. Depart after breakfast.

Day 11. depart after breakfast., day 12. depart after breakfast., day 13. depart after breakfast., day 14. depart after breakfast..

Late morning, Local sailing and finish the day back in Lefkas town. Group cruise dinner party.

Day 15. Depart for home journey after breakfast.

The itineraries for the 1 week and 2 week cruises that are given in this website may change depending on the weather, mainly prevailing and forecasted wind conditions and sea state. Our goal is to cruise safely and gently to offer the most comfort and the best quality of experience. If there is a potential for adverse sailing conditions, we will sail an alternative route or wait at anchor or port for better weather.

Supported Flotilla Addons

  • Outboard Motor for Dinghy: €150 per week.
  • Onboard full time Skipper: €1050 per week.
  • SUP: 150 per week.

Skippered Charter Addons

Which type of charter should i choose what’s the difference between elysium yachting’s supported flotilla and skippered charter.

If you want to rent a yacht that you sail as the skipper, with other yachts, then you must book the Supported Flotilla. You, or anyone else in your group, must be certified to sail the yacht. We will need to see your original skipper’s license before we hand over the yacht to you.

You will sail your yacht under the capable support and guidance of our experienced skipper, who will inform you about navigating the passage, the winds, wind changes, tides, currents, any hazards and best anchoring and mooring practices for the locality. Our skipper and an extra crew member will offer all assistance to make your sailing tour pleasant, safe and exciting. You are responsible for the food and drinks on your boat, the fuel and port fees, if any. We strongly recommend that you purchase hull damage waiver insurance to cover you in case of any damage to your boat, caused by you. Give us a call for more information about this insurance.

Skippered Charter

A skippered charter is where we provide the yacht and skipper, and all you have to do is bring yourself, and your friends or loved ones. Some clothes and other stuff would be handy too, obviously. To select this option, select Skippered Charter Book a Berth/Bed. Our skipper will sail the yacht, and prepare breakfast and light lunches for all guests onboard, answer your questions, and be your fount of knowledge on all things related to your tour. You can help with sailing chores if you’re nautically inclined, or just chill out on deck and enjoy the sunshine. You will share a cabin with another guest, you have your own bunk bed. If you’d like a cabin to yourself, you can inform us and we will do our best to accommodate you, there is a cabin supplement charge involved.

Your breakfast, and a light lunch will be provided.by us daily. Dinners are usually had ashore, in a restaurant or taverna. Occasionally, we have a beach BBQ in a secluded bay on anchor.  Your skipper will tell you about the local attractions in every destination. If you’d like to bring any food or drink onboard, you can. There is a fridge or cold box on board to store your goodies. If all of you in the group are so inclined, you could contribute into a kitty and shop for food as a group.

The Supported Flotilla and Skippered Charter options both allow you to select a 1 week or 2 week sailing tour. The itineraries for both tours are given in the Itineraries tab above.

I’ve never sailed before, can I book the Supported Flotilla?

Yes, if somebody in your group has a valid Skipper’s license, equivalent to an RYA Day Skipper’s license at the very least. The person holding the skipper’s license should send us a copy by email so we can confirm your booking, and they should bring the original copy of their skipper’s license to collect the boat. If there is nobody in the group with a skipper’s license, you will have to rent a skipper from us. This service costs 150€ a day, for the duration of your sailing tour.

I’ve never sailed before, can I book the Skippered Charter?

The answer is a resounding Yes, you can. Being on a skippered charter is a great way to discover your love for sailing and the sea, if it’s been a dormant desire. We have known many guests go on to become skippers themselves after sailing on a Skippered Charter. Your skipper will be glad to share their profound knowledge of he boat, navigation, sailing and all things nautical with you. If you want to know how something works or how it’s done, just ask. If you want to learn by doing, just let the skipper know, and you can do some of the sailing chores such as manning the winches, doing the anchor handling or assisting with coming alongside.

What’s the weather like in Greece?

Greece is one of the sunniest places in Europe, with an average of 61% cloudless days in a year. Average temperatures in the Ionians range between 23C to 31C from end April to September. August is usually the hottest month of the year, with 31C being the average high.

What should I pack for my sailing tour?

It depends on when you’re sailing. Thin Tshirts, shorts, and other lightweight summer clothes are best suited for the weather from April through to September. Take a windcheater with a hood for windy days, and a few long sleeved tops. If you have sweatpants or leggings, pop some in your bags for nighttime wear. Sunglasses are an essential item in Greece. Sandals and slipons are easy to step into when going ashore and kick off when coming onboard. Bring plenty of sunscreen, ideally high SPF and waterproof. There are cool waterproof bags or drysacks you can buy in various sizes, it will keep water from getting into your expensive camera, phone, other electronics or travel documents.

Why do you recommend extra travel insurance? I’ve paid for my tickets and booking with my credit card, won’t the implied insurance provided by my credit card company cover all my travel insurance needs?

We strongly recommend that for both types of charter, you purchase dedicated travel insurance to cover you and your group for the duration of your voyage. Travel insurance that is provided by your credit card may not be the best option. In an emergency, you want to be supported swiftly, to the maximum extent possible.

Local Currency

The Euro is the currency used in Greece, which is the common currency in the entire Eurozone. If you want to change foreign currency, you can do so at any bank or currency exchange, but there aren’t that many currency exchanges in Lefkas. The easiest way to withdraw Euros would be through an ATM, and there is an ATM in Lefkas. Check out this  website for a list of local ATMs. This is best way to convert your currency to the local currency, because this eliminates the risk of getting stung by manipulated conversion rates offered by hole -in-the-wall money changers. Check out the best cards to use in the Eurozone and carry those. Then your exchange rate is either set by your bank or your credit/debit card provider. Do some research to find the best way to convert your currency while in Greece. This could save you some money! Make sure you get the best rates during your stay and sailing holidays in Greece.

If you’re an EU citizen, all you need to carry is some form of ID such as a national ID card, especially if you’re from a Schengen nation, but carrying your passport is recommended because EU nations can reintroduce temporary border controls in times of emergency. Go  here  for more information about EU travelers travelling within the EU.  If you’re a non-EU citizen, chances are you may have to obtain a visa prior to booking your sailing tour. The citizens of many non-EU nations can obtain an ETIAS visa waiver from November 2023 onwards. Greece is liberalizing its visa regulations, go  here  to find out more. Make sure you get your visas organized well in time to start your flotilla holiday or other sailing holidays in Greece!

Holiday and Health Insurance

If you’re a national of an ETIAS visa waiver nation, you may not require mandatory health insurance to  enter Greece , but dedicated travel insurance is strongly recommended when undertaking adventure tours such as flotilla and skippered charter sailing holidays. Read up and do your own research to avoid any holdups at the border. Greeks are mostly friendly and obliging, but rules are still rules. Having good holiday and health insurance gives you peace of mind during your flotilla holidays and other sailing holidays in Greece!

Driving in Greece

Greeks drive on the right, and seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Children under the age of 10 cannot travel in the front seat, and children under 3 must be seated in a suitable child restraint in the back seat. Most newer cars have  ISOFIX  anchor points fitted in the back seat that you can use to anchor the child’s car seat.

If you plan on driving in Greece a valid driver’s license is required, whether you’re driving your own car or a rental. If you’re an EU national, your national driver’s license is acceptable at car rental agencies. If you’re a non=EU national, you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Greece. Do your research before you travel. and obtain the correct documents. Visit this  website  for lots of useful information about driving in Greece. Look in the Getting Here tab to learn more about travelling to Lefkas Marina.  See you soon in Lefkas to begin your sailing holidays in Greece!

Nightlife and Going Out

The nightlife in places like Athens and Mykonos is vibrant and exciting. Greeks and tourists alike love to dress up and go out on the town, especially on the weekends. In places like Lefkas, the choice of nightclubs and bars is more limited, although tavernas, bars and restaurants abound close to the marina. You will not be left wanting for entertainment while in Lefkas. A simple web search will bring up a whole bunch of places to eat out at. About tipping at restaurants, leaving a cash tip, of around 10 to 15% of your bill is the way to go. Service charges are generally not added to the total, though this may vary between restaurants. Sampling the local nightlife is a great way to have a smashing good time on some of the islands in your flotilla holiday or island hopping sailing holiday in the Ionians!

Vaccinations and Inoculations

The CDC recommends Hepatitis B vaccination for travelers of all ages entering Greece, and rabies vaccination for people who will work directly with wildlife. Check your local inoculation recommendations for Greece before you travel. COVID vaccination certificates and negative COVID tests are not mandatory to enter Greece.

Greek Sails offer a range of sailing yachts from 32’ up to 50’ for flotilla and bareboat yacht charter.

If you know the type and size of yacht you’re interested in then you can view details of each yacht from the relevant ‘yacht details page’. If, however, you are newer to sailing or are less certain which of our sailing yachts might suit your party, then use our ‘ ’ to help guide you towards suitable yacht options.

The Greek Sails fleet consists mainly of Jeanneau yachts. Jeanneau have an excellent reputation for building comfortable affordable yachts. As experienced sailors ourselves we agree with this generally held view and feel that Jeanneau yachts offer our customers the best value for money without compromising sailing performance or safety.

However, we do not sail Jeanneau exclusively and in addition our fleet also includes yachts from other major manufacturers including Beneteau and Salona.

All our sailing yachts are based in the town of Poros on the island of Poros just an hour on the hydrofoil south of Piraeus, the port of Athens. You can find out more about Greek Sails’ location on Poros and how easy it is to reach Poros under the ‘About Greek Sails’ section.

Our commitment to your holiday

An important point is that at Greek Sails we actually own the yachts we charter, we are not simply an agent focused on selling as many places as we possibly can. Consequently it is in our interest to maintain our yachts - the yachts you’ll be sailing - to the highest standard, because we are the people who will need to come and assist in the rare case of a customer having a problem with a yacht.

We maintain our own yachts at the neighbouring boatyard with our own team who have been part of the company for many years and so consequently know our Jeanneau & Beneteau yachts intimately. This focus on the good maintenance of our yachts and self-interest in ensuring you have no problems during your sailing holiday with us means you can be absolutely confident in the condition of your chosen yacht.

Notes:

¹ The number of cabins refers to compartments separate to the main saloon laid out as permanent bedrooms

² Berths are quoted based on cabin beds with figures in brackets indicating use of additional convertible main saloon seating

³ By ‘Young families’ we mean families with younger children who might share a cabin and generally require less space. By ‘Larger families’ we mean more than 4 persons or families with older children maybe wanting separate cabins and requiring more space

Our sizing suggestions: What is cramped to one person can seem spacious to another. Some people like to charter larger yachts ‘just to have the space’ and there’s nothing wrong with that, but remember you will probably be chartering extra cabins which you may have no use of. Also, larger yachts can demand more experience, particularly in close-quarters handling, consequently we have tried to make what we hope are ‘sensible’ suggestions on sizing and numbers on-board, balancing space, size and so cost and unused cabins.

Greece flotilla holidays – an introduction

If you like a mixture of small town and village harbours with a range of facilities ashore, then a Greece flotilla holiday is for you. Greece is the home of flotilla sailing and where many people experience their first flotilla holiday.

img

Difficulty:Flotillas for all experience levels
Vibe:Village and small town harbours. Island hopping.
Can add: Beach Club, RYA & ICC Courses, Skipper, Crew, Bareboat, Hotel

There are four areas for Greece flotilla  holidays, the Ionian, the Saronic, the Northern Sporades, and the Dodecanese. You can see these on the Area Map here.

The Ionian is renown as a beginners area. The Peloponnese offers equally easy flotillas though there are options for the more experienced too. Both of these areas offer a number of different flotilla routes .

The Dodecanese offers the most challenging runs, with the Northern Sporades and Gulf of Corinth being less difficult, though still harder than many novices would want, especially in high season. The choice of routes in these two areas is more limited, and there are fewer yachts available to augment fleets so don’t delay booking.

Dodecanese Flotillas

The Dodecanese is probably the least visited of the main sailing areas and if you can cope with the sailing conditions, (up to F4-6 with choppy seas) it’s the pinnacle of Greece flotilla holidays .

Difficulty: Previous experience essential

Yachts: 34ft-50ft, 3-5 cabins

Can combine with: Skipper, Crew, Bareboat

Airport: Kos

The Dodecanese flotillas run from Kos but once away from this bustling tourist centre you enter a different world. The intervening islands may be less known than those in the Cyclades, but they’re no less beautiful.

Better still the islands are largely inaccessible except by sea so tourist numbers are low. You will still find plenty of restaurants but is wonderfully uncommercialised and the locals are more friendly than elsewhere.

Nisyros: View over the harbour

Even in high season, it’s not too busy so there’s no rush to get in of an evening. This is fortunate as flotillas in the Dodecanese involve some longer sails than you would usually find on a flotilla.

As many passages are between islands, opportunities for lunch stops are fewer than usual too – these are flotillas for those who enjoy the sailing, not just arriving in port.

The winds are at their maximum strength through July and August when the Meltemi wind blows. It’s a fickle wind, both in how often it blows and for how long. So you may not experience it at all, or it could blow every day. If you prefer more gentle sailing, aim to go before or after the high season period.

See the Dodecanese flotilla routes

Ionian Flotillas

Ionian flotillas can be divided in to those sailing the northern part, usually starting from Corfu, those covering the central part, usually starting from Lefkas, and those sailing the southern part from Kefalonia. Corfu has its own airport whilst Preveza airport is a short hop from Lefkas. Kefalonia has an airport at Argostoli.

Difficulty: Good for beginners

Yachts: 32ft-50+ft, 2-5 cabins

Can combine with: Beach Club, RYA & informal Courses, Skipper, Crew, Bareboat

Airports: Corfu & Preveza

Conditions are generally mild – plenty of sunshine and light winds. Once in a while strong winds come through but these are usually predictable and flotillas usually sit them out in harbour; they don’t last long and aren’t common.

A more frequent problem can be a lack of wind – I once spent a fortnight in the northern and central area without a single days sailing. The winds are generally better the further south you go.

Gaios: The pretty town square and quay

The Ionian contains dozens of beautiful stops, from traditional fishing villages to small tourist towns. Many were severely affected by the 1953 earthquake but have been rebuilt in traditional style.

The enduring popularity of the area means harbours can be busy, especially in high season, and in some places even early arrivals may not get a space on the quay. The Flotilla Lead Crew will find you somewhere to moor but may ask you to get in mid afternoon (just when the wind gets going).

If you don’t like having to clamber over other yachts to get ashore, or prefer to stay out sailing later, I would suggest you consider a Peloponnese flotilla instead, where sailing conditions are similar but it’s a lot less busy. But if you can bear the crowds, or are able to go outside the peak period, the Ionian is a charming area and probably best done with a flotilla, so you can leave the worrying about mooring space to the Lead Crew.

See the Ionian flotilla routes

Peloponnese Flotillas

The Peloponnese is less well known than the Ionian and as a result there are fewer Flotillas there. However, the number of options seem to increase every year. I suggest you visit soon before the word gets out, as it’s a superb area. To me, a Peloponnese  flotilla is a better choice for novices than the Ionian, though there are also options here for the more experienced.

Difficulty: Excellent for beginners and above

Can combine with: RYA & informal Courses, Skipper, Crew, Bareboat

Airport: Athens

Peloponnese flotillas offer a mix of coastal sailing and island hopping, though since the “mainland” is in fact the large island that is the Peloponnese, technically, it’s all islands! The wind bends around the heavily indented coast making for some interesting sailing.

The best flotilla in the Peloponnese is a little harder to get to than the Ionian though the area has the advantage of scheduled rather than charter flights in to Athens airport – there’s even a choice of airlines!

From Athens airport, there you’ve three options. You can take a flotilla from Athens with a short transfer but a long first and last days sail. You can take a longer transfer to Corinth and sail the easy Saronic Gulf. Or you can transfer to the island of Poros to join a Peloponnese  flotilla there, with the advantage that you’ll be starting your sailing in the middle of the cruising area.

Tiros: One of several beach restaurants with the quay right

The Peloponnese includes the easy sailing Saronic and Argolic Gulfs. There’s a the option to sail further south down the eastern Peloponnese though this is an intermediate run. The area is much less busy than the Ionian, and much more Greek, being primarily a Greek holiday destination.

As you go further south, even the “local” tourists get thin on the ground though there’s plenty to see, from Roman remains and medieval castles to one of the country’s most popular nightclubs, hidden in a small village!

With less competition for mooring spaces your Lead Crew will rarely ask you to come in early. The only place you’re likely to have to raft up and climb over other yachts to the shore is at the must see port of Hydra . But if you don’t like clambering ashore, you can reach Hydra by ferry.

For those with previous experience, the Peloponnese flotilla, which runs down the east side to Monemvasia then up to the top of the Argolic Gulf offers the chance to get even further off the beaten track and is highly recommended.

See the Peloponnese flotilla routes

Sporades Flotillas

Sporades Flotillas are ideal for those with previous experience who want a bit more wind than novices.

Difficulty: Previous experience desireable

Yachts: 36ft-46ft, 2-4 cabins

Airports: Skiathos

The prevailing northerly winds make for some exciting sailing especially as you pass between the islands. With relatively few yachts based in the area, it’s not hard to find space to moor at the whitewashed villages that are your destination.

The northern Sporades are fairly small so flotillas do a week around the islands then a week exploring the Pelion and Volos Gulfs to the west.

There is in fact enough to keep you occupied for a fortnight around the islands if you’re happy to anchor some of the time, making a Flotilla in the Sporades a good choice for those wanting a week on Flotilla then a week bareboating.

Kyra Panagia: Still waters

You can start your flotilla from Skiathos, (hence some call these Skiathos flotillas rather than Sporades flotillas) with the airport just 5 minute drive from the quayside. It’s mostly charter flights though scheduled internal flights are available from Athens.

The Sporades is a beautiful area as anyone who has seem the film Mamma Mia will vouch. However, it’s no newcomer to tourism and although it’s all very tastefully done it doesn’t feel like Greece in the way that the Saronic and Dodecanese do.

However, the great thing about sailing is you can escape the crowds. So as you head towards the eastern end of the islands and air of peacefulness descends.

Note that unlike most flotillas which start at the weekend, Sporades flotillas start on Friday, for the simple reason that it’s the day most UK flights run.

Greece Flotilla Sailing Holiday

Flotilla holidays in greece.

The Greeks have been a nation of seafarers since time immemorial – no surprise when large parts of your homelands are either islands or virtually inaccessible by land. Homer referred to these waters as his ‘wine-dark sea’, while Helen of Troy was the legendary ‘face that launched 1,000 ships’.

And while this Eastern end of the Mediterranean has been both a highway and a crossroads simply forever, these shores  have provided safe harbour for the travellers and adventurers of history. Today their legacy of picturesque harbours, atmospheric harbour towns, stunningly scenic bays and anchorages, Byzantine churches, crusader castles and ancient temples is your playground.

Seafaring in Greece- All time classic

We have seafaring options in Greece to suit everyone. More adventurous sailors should set a course for the Dodecanese or Northern Sporades and Pelion Coast, while those looking for a more leisurely time will enjoy the clement waters cruised by our South Ionian flotillas.  The latter coastline plays home to our beach club at Nikiana , whilst Lefkas is the home port for our RYA sailing school , Seafarer Training.

If you fancy sailing on a larger yacht with a professional crew to do most of the work, then join our ‘Share a Sail’ programmes in the Cyclades , the Ionian or the Dodecanese isles of the Eastern Aegean.

Destinations

Greece is the cradle of flotilla holidays, so it should come as no surprise that this is where we offer our widest choice of sailing areas in the most idyllic environment.

Arrival Day

  • Transfer time from the airport to our yacht base in SAMI is about 1 hour. Our yachts are ready for boarding at 3pm on arrival day. Our team will be on the quayside to meet you. After a short briefing about living on board, safety and the local town you’ll be left to relax and sort your things out. You have the option of going to the local beach, a nearby swimming pool or just relaxing on the boat. Everything begins the next morning at about 10am.

Yachts anchored in the Ionian near Fiscardo

Day 1 (12NM):

  • We’re northbound with a short hop up the strait between Kefalonia and Ithaca. It’s the first day on the water and we spend time practising mooring techniques and boat familiarisation.
  • Our destination is Polis Bay , a stunning, secluded bay on the North West corner of Ithaca. After mooring up on long lines, there’s a walk to the nearby taverna and some stunning views of the bay.

Yachts moored on the quay in the Greek harbour

Day 2 (12NM):

  • We continue North and sail up to Sivota on the south-east coast of Lefkas island. Verdant hillsides join seamlessly with rocky coves and sandy bays to create a picture postcard setting. The harbour is beautiful, with a small flotilla of colourful local fishing boats found lining the shore. Shops, tavernas, cafes and mini markets are all close by.

Aerial view of yachts on the quay in Kalamos

Day 3 (16nm):

  • Kalamos is probably our favourite little place in the Ionian. Honestly, time has stood still here. An abundance of bays to anchor in along the way, perfect for snorkelling and exploring. Stern to on the quay if there’s space, if not a long line ashore. Grab a beer and watch the yachts coming in with the brilliant harbour master “George” taking charge!

Small harbor in the Greek Ionian islands

Day 4 (14nm):

  • A really easy day today. A short sail around Kalamos and then head North West, towards the captivating little harbour of Vathi on Meganisi island . Pastel-coloured houses huddle on the clifftop overlooking the deep blue bay below – where you happen to be moored up. Wander around the old harbour and village and discover another world and some brilliant tavernas. Great swimming, great food and quite simply heaven on earth. You’ll never want to leave here.

Busy harbour in Greece

Day 5 (24nm):

  • We head South today, sailing from one Vathi to another: Vathi Ithaca – the home of Odysseus in Greek mythology. Once in Vathi, there is plenty to see with a gorgeous harbourfront area to explore.

Kefalonia island harbour of Sami

Day 6 (18nm):

  • The last leg of our flotilla today as we return back to Sami with a nice easy run past the southern tip of Ithaca. If there is time on route, Antisamos beach is well worth a stop.
  • Check out is by 10am the following morning. Our local team can assist with arranging onward travel.

Qualifications required

What qualifications do i need.

To charter a yacht in Greece as part of a flotilla or independently you will need a qualified skipper on board, and a competent crew member.  The ICC  ( International Certificate of Competence ) is probably the best ticket to have as it is widely recognised by the authorities here on the islands. This, or the  Day Skipper  practical certificates are the minimum required.

Feeling a bit rusty?

Many of our guests sometimes feel their skills aren’t quite ship-shape when they arrive for their flotilla holiday. After the morning briefing on day 1, there is the opportunity to practise your mooring skills under the guidance of our brilliant crew.

Day refresher is £165 per day  (subject to staff availability)

Skipper on Board

If you think you would like some further assistance for your first day of sailing, then an instructor can join you on board for the day and help you ease into the sailing.

Skipper on board is £120 per day  (subject to staff availability)

Experience the Sailing… and the food!

You’ll experience some amazing Greek food whilst on a flotilla, from classic Greek kitchen dishes cooked by local chefs, seasonal salads, mind-blowing tomatoes and freshly grilled sardines, pork chops and club sandwiches – the food in Kefalonia and the other Ionian Islands on a flotilla holiday is delicious and very reasonably priced.

flotilla yacht charter greece

When it comes to wine, there are 48 varieties of grape grown locally and some very fine internationally recognised wines to try, along with some fantastic Hellenic beers, there’s plenty to enjoy.

Wander along from your mooring and you’ll be sure to find coffee and fresh pastries for breakfast, plus pop into one of the great little mini-markets to stock up your yacht fridge for some lunchtime treats on anchor somewhere.

Both our yacht bases in Sami and in Lixouri have an excellent selection of mini-markets, bakeries and other shops available for buying provisions at the start of your flotilla week. If you happen to be in Lixouri, be sure to pay a visit to I-Scream Ice cream parlour on the left-hand side of the town square – you won’t be disappointed!

Evening Meals

Part of the joy of Flotilla Sailing is sitting down to a Greek feast at the end of a fantastic day of sailing. For the first evening, we arrange a group meal at a local restaurant  (not included in the holiday price)  and then for the rest of the evenings, the choice is yours.

Whether you’re moored at anchor and rowing to shore to a beachside taverna or simply stepping onto the harbourside, your Flotilla Skipper and 1st Mate will let you know the best options for where to eat. In the busier harbours, there’ll be many fantastic options to choose from. In the quieter locations, it might be just one or two.

For some of our harbour stops, there will be the option of a complimentary mooring for dining in a particular restaurant, but you are still free to eat where you like!

In the local area

Here are some options to check out in the local area:

  • A sunset meal at one of the best beaches in the Greek islands is also a must. Petani beach and taverna “Erasmia“. Only a 15 – 20 minute taxi ride from the club this place is incredible – get there early for a swim and settle down for a wonderful eating experience.
  • Head into town and Lixouri square, 5 – 10 minutes in a taxi from the club (1 taxi for 4 people is ~€10 one way). A wonderful place to watch the world go by with countless cafes, tavernas and bars. Whatever you do, don’t miss the best ice cream in the world at “I-Scream” – it’s divine and we love it!

Getting there

Our yacht base in Sami is quick and easy to get to, with a reasonable flight time of 3hrs from the UK and many regional departure airport options direct to Kefalonia airport. The transfer is approximately 70 minutes.

Thursday changeover day

Transfers are not included but can be easily arranged via our website. Bookings are made with our recommended transfer partner, Kefalonia Taxi Transfers.

On arrival in Kefalonia airport make your way to the arrivals gate exit and your pre-booked taxi will be there ready and waiting for you. It’s a 60 minute journey to flotilla base in Sami.

Drop us a line if you can’t find your answer…

What qualifications do we need to be able to go on Flotilla?

We require a minimum IYT Flotilla Skipper, RYA Day Skipper Practical, or an (ICC) or equivalent experience as skipper of a similar size boat in tidal or non-tidal waters. If you have never sailed in the Med before we strongly recommend our refresher course (staff availability dependent) to go over specific harbour and mooring techniques used here or take our ICC test out here in Greece.

Where does the flotilla depart from and return to?

For 2021, our flotillas are operating from SAMI, Kefalonia which is on the eastern side of the island. Sami is a great little harbour with a beach just over the harbour wall from where your yacht will be moored. In town there are also plenty of tavernas and restaurants as well as supermarkets for getting provisions

Previously our yacht base was up the coast in Ag. Efimia, however a number of factors led us to switch locations for 2021

What extra costs are there when we are out in Greece?

Flights to and from the UK, transfers, and personal expenditure.

The following must be paid in Greece:

  • (For yachts 38 foot or under) Non refundable damage waiver of £99 per yacht per week paid as part of you final balance
  • (For yachts over 38 foot) a £2,000 / 2,330€ Yacht Security Deposit per yacht
  • Fuel used (approx 70€ euros per week),
  • Mooring fees (approx 30€)

There is also the option of adding a skipper on board (If available) for £165 per day)

What is the deposit/damage waiver for?

For yachts 38 foot or under on flotilla:

There is a non-refundable damage waiver of £99 per yacht per week. This helps cover the excess premium that we take out with our marine insurance company and means that you are not liable for any big bill at the end of the week. The waiver is payable as part of your final balance.

For yachts over 38 foot on Flotilla:

There is a refundable security deposit of £2,000 which is to cover any loss or damage to the yacht whilst under charter. It covers the excess premium that we have by our marine insurance companies. This can be paid by credit card.

For All Charter Yachts:

There is a refundable security deposit of £2,500 which is to cover any loss or damage to the yacht whilst under charter. It covers the excess premium that we have by our marine insurance companies. This can be paid by credit card.

How much does it cost to moor each night?

Not a lot. Only Sami (on Kefalonia) uses a tariff system that can cost approx 8-10 euros a night. Other places are normally only a few euros if anything.

How much is yacht fuel each week?

We charge fuel at the pump rate when re filling at the end of the charter. This has varied dramatically over the last few years and is approximately €1.5 per litre.

Do you supply charts and pilot books etc?

Yes, we supply the relevant charts and local pilot books for you. However, many guests bring their own as a keep sake. (Ours tend to get dropped in the water 100s of times.)

What about yacht cleaning at the end of the week, bed linen and towels?

Yacht cleaning is included in the holiday price, along with yacht linen. We do not provide towels.

Is there a hairdryer on board?

There are no hairdryers on any of our yachts, so you will need to bring your own. Please note that you will only able to use your hairdryer when it is plugged into a mains socket in a building. The shore power connection for our yachts is normally low voltage, so a high power item like a hairdryer can blow the fuses for the entire pontoon!

How much is the transfer to the yacht base in Sami?

Taxi prices can be found on our  Transfer Booking Page.

How many people can a taxi take?

All taxis are licensed for 4 passengers,  no exceptions . For larger parties, you will need to take either 2 taxis or a small minibus.

We are doing a 2 week flotilla Holiday. What happens on change over day?

You will return to Sami with the flotilla for two nights, with the Thursday spent all day in port. A great chance to explore Sami and the surrounding areas or somewhere else on Kefalonia.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Ionian Flotilla in Greece

Lighter winds and shorter passages make the Ionian ideal for a relaxed flotilla sailing holiday in Greece, popular with families and less experienced crews.

Explore these beautiful Greek islands and experience gentle afternoon breezes, warm seas and friendly harbour-front tavernas. This flotilla is ideal for couples and families with children seeking a relaxed sailing holiday.

The sheltered waters of the Ionian offer an unlimited number of tranquil bays and enchanting fishing harbours. Navigation is straightforward with no tides, currents or other hazards. There are good sailing breezes late morning through the afternoon, but winds rarely exceed Force 5. Anchor in picturesque bays or moor up in bustling fishing harbours.

We don't believe in 'regimented' flotilla sailing. You're free to plot your own course during the day. The flotilla skipper is on hand to give you advice and support - from sorting out a snarled anchor to reserving you a table for dinner on the quayside.

Less experienced skippers will appreciate his help with mooring "stern-to" or "bows-to" on the quayside at the end of an enjoyable afternoon's sail. And if you are an experienced sailor you can choose to leave the flotilla for a few days, joining up for the barbecue evening or other social event.

Those new to sailing or looking to brush up on their skills can take advantage of our  learn to sail on flotilla  option. Ask the sales team for more details.

Diary of the Ionian Flotilla Lead Crew by Bella, Flotilla Skipper

The life of a flotilla lead crew! Oh where to start?!

This year will be my second season working as flotilla skipper on the Ionian flotilla and I am enjoying it more and more as time goes on. I have been sailing since I was 6 years old, am a yachtmaster offshore and recently completed my cruising instructor training. Sailing is a huge part of my life and I feel very fortunate that I get to work and share my passion for sailing with others each week on flotilla.

I have gotten to know the Ionian very well and love seeking out the best spots and restaurants to share with clients throughout the season. There is never a dull moment on flotilla and each week brings new experiences. Here is a brief glimpse into what weekly life looks like for a flotilla lead crew in Greece...

Diary of the Ionian Flotilla Lead Crew by Bella, Flotilla Skipper

Day 1 - Sunday

Turnaround day!

On Sundays we turn the boats around that have been out on the water the week before. This involves making sure that everything is back in the correct place, the lockers are tidy and the new crew have everything they need for their sailing week.

In the afternoon the guests start to arrive and check in at the office. They get comfortable onboard their yachts and go through the inventory to make sure they know where everything is and that nothing is missing. Maria and I then go onboard the boat to do a whole boat briefing, talking about how the sails work, how to operate the toilet and the main safety of the vessel. Each vessel is different so this is tailored to exactly what they have on their boat.

Once the check-in and briefings are all done then the guests are free to have dinner and enjoy the rest of their day in Paleros.

Sunday

Day 2 - Monday

The first day of sailing! It is always exciting starting a fresh week of sailing with a new group on flotilla. Everyone is eager to get going and explore all the area has to offer.

At 9am we have the flotilla briefing with all of the clients in one of the local cafes close to the base. We do a flotilla briefing every morning throughout the week but the first morning briefing always takes a little bit longer as it involves talking about how the week will run, what clients can expect and also safety measures to be aware of.

We then we go into our normal morning brief and talk about where we will be going for the day, what weather to expect and how we will be mooring. We also recommend a bay to stop in for lunch and a swim stop. After the briefing there is time for the clients to do any shopping they might need to do before returning to the boat, ready to depart. We are on hand to answer any last minute questions that clients might have before they set off.

With all clients happily on their way, Maria and I can now set off on lead boat Eros, making our way straight to Sivota. Once in Sivota we await the radio call from clients announcing their imminent arrival! Reminding them how to set up for their stern to lazy line mooring, we bring them all in one by one with help from our friend Costas who works at Stavros Taverna. The yachts can then connect to shore power and fill up with water. We have call in at 4pm on Monday so it gives people enough time to shower etc before our punch party on the quay.

Maria and I make the bookings in Stavros Taverna at the preferred time for the clients and then the punch party gets underway! This is a lovely start to the week and gives clients the opportunity to get to know each other as well as giving us the opportunity to get to know the new group as a whole. Everyone makes their way to their separate dinner reservations, giving Maria and I time to shower and eat before heading to our cabins after a busy first day.

Monday

Day 3 - Tuesday

Today we head to Fiskardo, a very popular spot in the Ionian so we are sure to make our way straight there after leaving Sivota. Guests are reminded the night before to fill up with water before the morning briefing at Vibes cafe at 9am so that we can make a swift departure once the briefing is complete.

The sail to Fiskardo is around 3 hours so after seeing everyone off, we head straight there and longline the boat in a space where we can build a raft big enough to fit the flotilla. This particular week we have a smaller group which made it easier to get a spot.

Once our group starts arriving, we ask them to have fenders on both sides and a bow and stern line on the side they would be coming onto the raft. We head out to meet them in the RIB to collect their long lines and tie these to the rocks. After we have built the raft, which usually takes around 20/30 minutes per boat, we share some information about Fiskardo with the guests and also inform them about the trip to the caves for anyone who wants to join. We head to the caves with dinghys and outboards. The caves are incredible as you drive up onto a little beach inside and then you can get out and walk around the whole cave.

Once back in Fiskardo we have cocktails and quiz at Theodora’s. This week it was pirate themed so we added a pirate round to the quiz and the guests got involved by dressing up as pirates! Everyone is free to choose their own spot for dinner and Maria and I normally head to the Thai restaurant for something a little different!

Before turning in for the night, we check the raft to make sure everything is how it should be. I also tend to get up through the night to double check as well - a skipper's habit!

Tuesday

Day 4 - Wednesday

Today we are heading to Port Leone in Kalamos to build another raft. We went onto each boat around 9am to make sure the guests were happy with the route for the day and the bay stop. Once the last guest on the raft is ready to go, we can start deconstructing it. The anchors are less likely to cross if we take them off in the reverse order that we laid them in.

Today we enjoyed a great sailing day as it is 18nm from Fiskardo to Port Leone and the wind was blowing up to 25knots. Once in Port Leone we long lined the clients individually so that they could have some privacy and a nice quiet night.

During the day we had prepared some some food for this evening's potluck on the beach. Everyone brought something to share and we had a lovely relaxing evening eating and chatting whilst watching the the bioluminescence in the water.

Wednesday

Day 5 - Thursday

Waking up after a very peaceful night's sleep, we headed to everyone's boats again to give them a personal briefing about our plans for the day and then dismantled the raft. We took off the long lines and picked up the anchors and got all the guests on their way to Spartochori. Maria and I enjoyed a quick swim before heading off ourselves.

We arrived into Spartachori around 1pm and said hello to the Taverna owner before having lunch onboard. Today guests were advised that they didn't need to be in until 5pm so we spent some time in the afternoon putting together a quiz to do later that evening.

We share some details about Spartochori with the guests, the facilities and what time we will be having our group meal this evening. Everyone really enjoyed the quiz which we did on the stern of the boats and then we all went for our group meal. It was a really fun evening and then everyone headed back to the yachts for what ended up being a bit of blowy night!

Thursday

Day 6 - Friday

On Fridays we go to Little Vathi and a small bay called Karnagio. We have booked this for the entire season so we just have to tell them at the start of the week how many boats and people we will be bringing. It’s only 10 minutes around the corner from Spartochori and is a beautiful bay with a lovely beach just a short walk away from the main town.

The restaurant owner often helps us moor the boats, especially if it is particularly windy, as he knows the area so well. We have our final group meal here before thanking everyone for an amazing week. After dinner some of us headed into the main town to watch the football whilst others called it a night.

Friday

Day 7 - Saturday

The final day of the flotilla - time to head back to base!

We do our final morning briefing with some breakfast in the Taverna before seeing all the guests off to enjoy their final day's sail. We then head straight back to the base to sort out some final things before changeover the next day.

Guests come in around 4pm so that the fuel can be filled up and the diver can check the boats.  We let the guests know about their departure times in the morning and ask them to fill the boats with water and get the yachts cleared for the end of their charter. Guests head to one of the local restaurants for dinner and we continue to prepare for changeover the following morning. The final day is always one of mixed emotions for guests - happy and uplifted from their week out on the water but also usually quite sad that it has come to an end (for this trip at least!).

Island Sailing

Flotilla sailing belongs to the category of the Bareboat charters is which includes. In Flotilla sailing we have a group of small sailing yachts on a bareboat basis (usually without crew) 28-35 feet  long, rented out in whole or in part. All the little yachts sail together accompanied by a leader-guide following a pre-arranged specific route/itinerary.

The two calm, easy and smooth sailing areas in Greece that you can sail in a flotilla are A) the Saronic and Argolic Gulf south of Athens and B) Lefkas & Corfu islands in the north part of the Ionian sea.

Flotillas are the ideal compromise between bareboat and a crewed charter vacations. With a flotilla you will skipper your own boat, together with a fleet of several other yachts. Yet, an experienced skipper (flotilla leader) – on board one of the leading yachts – will guide you and the rest of the flotilla fleet from port to port.

Advantages of Flotilla Yacht Charter in Greece

sailing Flotilla Yacht charter Greece

  • With crewed charters & gulets cruises on one side and bareboat sailing on the other side, flotillas comprise the best of both worlds, since the flotilla leader will help you skipper the yacht yourself.
  • The lead yacht, skippered by the flotilla leader, serves as a crewed charter yacht where singles or couples can rent a berth charter or cabin charter, respectively.
  • Flotilla yacht charter sailing holidays are ideal for families with young children, who will then have the opportunity to play with other kids.
  • Yacht charter holidays may seem expensive, but compared with normal hotel prices and ferries fees, flotilla holidays are actually quite cheap. Moreover, you have your own kitchen and you will not be limited to the major ports (read: expensive tourist traps) as with cruise liners.
  • The flotilla fleets can vary from 5 to 10 yachts supervised by at least one leading yacht that will help and advise you.
  • Though not necessarily, flotilla yachts are usually monohulls, since catamarans do take up even more space in the already crowded ports.
  • Flotilla leaders will help you with issues like Mediterranean mooring & anchoring or navigation and will decide whether a certain anchorage is safe for the night. If desired you can request constant VHF contact or even visual contact during the sailing hours. Also every morning there is a skippers meeting, where you will be briefed on the day ahead, the next port, weather forecasts, possible lunchtime anchorages, etc.

You can find numerous Yacht Charter Companies in Greece that organize flotilla sailing holidays and will be more than pleased to inform you on flotilla yacht charter options in the Greek Islands.
