A new view: Green Pond Yacht Club will soon open its doors

The 2011 summer season will mark a new era for Green Pond Marina with the opening of the Green Pond Yacht Club.

On Saturday, May 14, the club hosted an open house for members, potential members and the community at large. An opening date has not been set but the club is slated to be open by summer.

General Manager Kristin Boon said the club will benefit the entire community, by operating year-round.

“We hope to have a nice mix of summer and year-round residents,” she said. “We see this as a place where people can also hold Christmas parties and off-season gatherings.”

Located on the corner of Menauhant and Acapesket Road, the club is the former home of owner and commodore Harry Turner, and has been renovated to include a bar and dining area for members. There is also an enclosed deck overlooking Green Pond.

Boon added that the majority of members live nearby.

“Half the neighborhood has already signed up. They’re excited to have a place they can walk to and see their neighbors and socialize,” she said.

Turner now lives two houses over from the club, and said he is committed to maintaining a quiet, family-oriented club. In January, when Turner sought a liquor and victualler license from the Board of Selectmen, he chose not to seek an entertainment license out of concern for his neighbors.

 “We decided to make it a private club because it’s easier to control membership that way,” Turner said.

Turner has also offered the use of six new Optimist sailboats to the Falmouth High School sailing team free of charge. Previously, the team rented boats from Falmouth Yacht Club.

“They’ve been using the boats since their season started May 9,” he said. “They’re a really nice bunch of kids and their instructor Kristina Woods is wonderful. They’re great to have around.”

The club also features an education center, which will provide sailing and power boating classes. The center is named for Bill and Suzie Bauknecht, former longtime owners of the house and Green Pond Seafood.

Turner and his friend, K.C. Clarkson of the Falmouth Police Department, decided the club would be the perfect addition to the marina. Clarkson, who owns Kentri Developments, was the general contractor for the project and also serves as vice commodore.

The club features many recycled materials, such as flooring from the Worcester Shoe Factory and oak boards from the USS Constitution. The double teak border around the bar is from the Harvard Library.

 “Our goal is for this to be a nice place where a family can come and enjoy a great meal and the beautiful view,” Turner said. “The focus is on family and boating.”

Love the food, love the cocktails, love the view from the deck. If you are an osprey fan, there's a nest right on the property so you can watch the parents constantly out fishing and flying back with each new catch. Pretty damn cool.

The transformation is complete: the former Green Pond Tackle and Marina at the corner of Menauhant and Acapesket Road in East Falmouth is now officially the Green Pond Yacht Club . 

The members-only club is the brainchild of Falmouth native Harry Turner, who bought the property back in 2000. Last fall, Turner—who spent much of the last decade installing new docks, constructing a mechanic's garage and expanding the tackle and seafood operations—got the idea to transform the property into a yacht club, according to General Manager Kristin Boon.

Turner got the go-ahead from the town's Zoning Board of Appeals back in December to begin construction, and the club's liquor license was in January.

The newly renovated clubhouse features a full-service dining room and deck overlooking the marina, along with an Admirals Loft for upper-level members and a classroom for sailing and boating instruction.

Overall rating

Although I've never thought about eating here, or actually considered the fact that its a resteraunt, I do enjoy the yacht club, its basically a hang out for all the locals at greenpond. In the summer time it becomes a nest of drunken fun with a mix of events like, lobster bakes, pot roast nights, and various other reasons to put on your party pants and go hang out with your neighbors in a completely care free environment. Throw in a dj, one man band, or just some loud stereo tunes and a dance floor, and you've got yourself a perfect summer night, that you can walk or drive a golf cart home from....and if it gets too exciting for you, the beach is about 20 yards from the front steps.
