Extreme Power and Speed The DCB M41 Widebody catamaran, designed by DCB (Dave's Custom Boats) founder Dave Hemmingson, is the largest model offered in the DCB M-Series. With its precision sculpted design and a pair of Mercury Racing 1350 engines, it speeds across the water at 175mph! Traxxas has faithfully captured the incredible looks and performance of the DCB M41 in a detailed scale replica that is versatile, fun, and fast. The catamaran hull has been accurately reproduced to deliver the speed, stability and confidence that the full-size M41 is famous for, allowing you to have fun wherever your marine adventures take you. The M41 replica is equally at home blasting across the waves at the lake on a fun run or exploiting its 50+mph speed on a favorite stretch of smooth water. The razor sharp handling lets you carve turns with authority and precision and yet, offers easy control while cruising by the shore. Traxxas Stability Management Micro Receiver with Fail-Safe Security Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) makes it possible to experience all the extreme power, speed, and acceleration that was engineered into Traxxas models by making it much easier to control the vehicle on any water condition. Punch it off the line and TSM goes to work sensing the boat's direction and making steering corrections to provide straight-ahead full-throttle acceleration without fishtailing, spinouts, and loss of control. TSM also works during cornering, first making intuitive corrections to maintain the vehicle's line, then hammer the throttle earlier in the turn for much faster exit speeds. Traxxas TSM gives all the benefits modern electronic stabilization has to offer without intruding on driving fun or introducing unexpected side effects that can be found on other systems such as drastically reduced turning radius, assistance that times out (quits), throttle restrictions, and an overall disconnected driving feel. Traxxas engineers developed superior tuning algorithms that run on high-speed, precision electronic components to create a system that works invisibly, in the background, without ever limiting throttle. TSM can be fine tuned (or turned off) for different surfaces by simply adjusting the multi-function knob on the TQi transmitter, or by adjusting the slider in the Traxxas Link app. The result is driving faster, with more ease, and having more fun. 40" Widebody Catamaran Hull Based on the full-size M41 Widebody designed and built by Dave's Custom Boats, the Traxxas M41 gets its unique, aggressive appearance thanks to its use of a catamaran hull design. Instead of using a monohull with a V-shape design, the catamaran uses two parallel hulls of equal size. This hull design offers more than a different visual presentation; the catamaran offers a wider stance on the water for increased stability and less hydrodynamic resistance. This also lets the M41 use less energy to propel itself across the water making it incredibly fast. The M41 gets on plane almost immediately, letting you get to the fun faster - to the tune of 50+ mph on 6S LiPo power. Big Boat, Big Fun The M41 is a water-roosting speed demon that's also a work of art. At just over 40 inches (1 meter) long, the M41 has a commanding presence just floating in the water. Crack open the throttle and the fun begins! The M41's size and design give it the versatility to work well in a wide range of conditions. The M41 is stable and easy to control whether blasting across the waves in a big lake, cruising past the shoreline, or testing it's 50mph top speed on a smooth pond. Rigid Internal Structure A unique feature of the M41 is its rigid internal structure with removeable electronics tray and motor mount. The VXL-6s electronic speed control, waterproof receiver box, and powerful 2056 high-torque steering servo are all bolted securely to the tray. The motor is attached independently to a motor mount that increases the rigidity of the hull. In just a few quick minutes, the electronics can be removed for maintenance. The internal structure includes an integrated reinforced transom to provide a solid mounting surface for the control and drive systems. In all the M41 delivers the ruggedness and reliability needed for all-day fun, run after run. DCB M41 Detailed Cockpit Traxxas faithfully reproduced the M41's artfully sculpted cockpit with an acute attention to detail, from the gauges and speakers to the steering wheel and seats. The detailed cockpit flows with the rest of the boat to become a complete work of high-performance art. Flex Cable Drive System The M41 features an efficient and reliable flex cable drive system that is securely mounted to the internal structure. This unique installation provides easy access to the various driveline components for quick maintenance or upgrades. Quick Release Flex Cable Some boats rely on set screws to pinch the flex shaft in place. Set screws are prone to loosening and can damage the flex shaft - that's not the Traxxas way. The M41 features a clamping collet that holds the flex cable tightly and centers it perfectly with the motor's output shaft for the smoothest operation possible. This design eliminates the usual set screws that can strip, come apart, or damage the flex cable. When it's time for maintenance, the collet releases quickly with a twist of the included precision wrench. Once loosened, the prop and flex cable simply slide out. Reinstallation is just as fast, making it easy to keep your M41 in peak running condition. High-Performance Prop The M41 is equipped with a surface-piercing prop that has been optimized to get the hull on plane as quickly as possible without cavitation. The prop is made of a molded composite construction that is lightweight and tough, with no balancing or sharpening needed. High-Strength Aluminum Hardware For efficient power transfer and razor-sharp handling, the M41 is equipped with rigid drive hardware and a flex-free transom. These components allow you to experience every ounce of extreme brushless horsepower and performance. The rudder, rudder support, and drive strut are extruded and machined from rugged 6000-series aluminum alloy for maximum strength. The pieces are polished and anodized a vivid blue. No sealing tape is required, and a specially designed drip rail in the hull channels away any water that washes over the hatch. Proven, Wide Hull Design

The tried and true wide hull design remains and now features an updated and modern trim scheme. The boat is reinforced with a triple layer of fiberglass around the seam to ensure it stays in one piece through the most brutal of crashes, and is enhanced with a superior gel coat finish.

Sturdy Fiberglass Canopy

The new canopy features more streamlined air scoops. It also features aluminum thumb screw fasteners to keep the canopy in place in case of a flip.

Zenoah has unrivaled reliability when it comes to two-stroke surface engines. With this engine, the boat will easily hit 50+ mph.

A centrifugal clutch prevents the prop from spinning while the engine is at idle. This keeps your fingers and hands safe while you handle the boat while placing it in or taking it out of the water. It also allows you to easily launch your boat without the need for a second person to toss your boat in the water while you work the throttle on the radio. This is a must on this size boat, but is often not an included feature.

Adjustable Aluminum Anodized Propeller Strut

The anodizing on the propeller strut ensures the aluminum is protected in harsh water condition, including salt water. The adjustability allows customers to tune the boat for specific water conditions.

Breakaway, Anodized Aluminum Rudder

Just like the strut, the anodizing on the rudder provides protection from harsh water conditions, while the break-away feature prevents from having to replace the rudder or rudder mount if the boat ever runs over a floating object.

Catamarans—cats for short—are the type of boat you either love or have little interest in. This guide is for the former. An RC catamaran is a multihulled vessel with dual parallel hulls. The downside to cats is that they’re not at home on choppier waters, and are more vulnerable to turnovers. Consider an RC cat for smooth water, sporty fun.

The price between models can vary a lot, so set a maximum budget before you do anything. Knowing your budget narrows down the search to only those within your price range.

Opt for an electric cat if you’re new to the world of RC boats. They’re cleaner, easier to maintain and still have plenty of oomph on the water. Gas-powered cats are for experienced hobbyists. They’re for people who love the realistic experience provided by liquid fuels. But they’re also dirtier, need periodic oil changes, engine tune-ups, and regular maintenance.

• Speed Considerations

Speed is half the fun, but the faster the boat, the more space and skills one needs to control it. Some models have variable speeds, whereas others are plain fast from the off. Think about where you intend to use the boat. High speed is not your friend with small bodies of water such as pools and tiny ponds. Novice users should opt for a slower cat or one with variable speeds and precise throttle manipulation.

• Motor Choices

Electric-powered catamarans use brushed or brushless motors. The brushed options are the cheapest of the two. They are also slower and have a shorter life expectancy than their brushless counterparts. Brushless is the best option because they pack more power, are quieter, and require no maintenance. The control range is how far the boat can travel from its transmitter. Make sure the distance is acceptable for your needs. Likewise, it’s not necessary to have a range that goes further than the line of sight (LOS). If that happens, and you lose power or the signal, you may not be able to recover the boat. Some models come with low-battery and low-signal warning indicators.

The range also depends on the radio system used and other factors. The control distance is acceptable with all the models featured in this review guide.

• Useful Features

Make a list of what features are important to you. Consider the boat’s materials, especially its hull. Others might be a breakaway rudder system, low battery protection, and a self-righting function. Make a note of the dimensions too. Beginners often buy a model that’s either smaller or bigger than they thought. Consider this vessel as a first catamaran, especially if it’s a gift for younger children. It makes an excellent trainer craft with its precise throttle manipulation and easy-to-use controls.

The streamlined design and bright yellow color offer more than just an eye-catching appeal. It also gives the Miss Geico high visibility on the water. Another feature worth a mention is the breakaway rudder system. That helps to protect the drivetrain should the boat hit ground.

• The Not So Good

At 12–15 mph, the 17” Miss Geico is not a super-fast catamaran, but then it doesn’t claim to be. The run time with the supplied battery only lasts about 10–15 minutes at best. That’s quite typical for this category, but disappointing nonetheless.

Surprisingly, not all big boats include a centrifugal clutch. Also, the propeller strut has anodizing to protect it in harsh conditions, and that includes salt water.

Another feature to mention is the water-cooling system. It uses water pickups on the bottom of the hull and the boat’s rudder. They work by feeding water to the cat’s engine and its tuned exhaust. Keeping operating temperatures down is vital for safe and optimal operation.

Another Pro Boat model gets the sixth slot. This time it’s the UL-19, a 30 inch brushless hydroplane. OK, so it’s not a true cat, but its super-fast performance and airfoil hull are sure to interest some.

You often read comments like adrenaline-pumping and heart-pounding, but in this case, it’s true. Pro Boat’s UL-19 is an incredible vessel that runs as fast as its sleek design suggests. This puppy can reach speeds up to 50+ mph on 6S power due to its 6 pole water-cooled motor and the 120A ESC. Drivers get to experience fast, confident cornering thanks to the waterproof Spektrum™ 3KG servo.

The UL-19 hydroplane is a lightweight yet stable boat on the water. The boat’s canopy and hull use hand-laid fiberglass in the build for added strength. It has removable/replaceable vertical fins and a breakaway rudder. The model also uses metal for its vital components. They include the aluminum rudder, stainless steel 2-blade prop, aluminum propeller strut, and a stainless-steel turn fin.

The electronics tend to get overly hot even at slower speeds. You’d expect that with flat-out racing for long durations, but not at half throttle. Yes, the Pro Boat UL-19 can run on a 6S battery setup, but it won’t serve you well in the longer term. Ideally, the 2-3S 5000mAh 50C LiPo is certain to increase component life. Running time depends on the setup, but it’s going to be in single digits in all cases.

The Traxxas Red DCB M41 twin hull catamaran is a beast outdoors that’s fast and versatile. It’s a stable performer too whether it’s racing across waves or smoother water. The included advanced TQi receiver, and 2.4GHz transmitter allows captains to fine-tune their boat. The incredible power comes from a pair of precision sculpted 1350 Mercury racing engines.

Let’s look at some of the other feature highlights. The adjustable battery trays with hook-and-loop straps are useful. You can adapt them to use with various Traxxas LiPo or NiMH batteries. The cat is compatible for use with 6S LiPos with integral low-voltage detection. There’s a removable electronics tray and a waterproof receiver box that are easy to access for maintenance.

It’s a beautiful boat and a great performer, but it does need upgrades for optimal performance. The stock cooling is one, and the stock plastic props don’t hold out too well either. Some users complain about the thin plastic hull as well. Despite that, I haven’t come across any reports of the hull breaking up. The cost of a Traxxas Red DCB M41 is quite high, but most fans think it offers excellent value.

Gasoline-Size Boat with Watts of Power!

I love electric boating. How can you not? Electric boats are clean, quiet and easy-to-use. Today’s brushless power plants provide gobs of power and tons of speed. The only drawback that I had with electric boating was that the hull sizes were usually smaller; in the 36-inch or less range. That is until now… Atomik RC has just released their new 58-inch RTR Catamaran A.R.C. (Atomik Racing Catamaran) powered by a whopping 2000 watt brushless motor that will easily develop speeds in excess of 40mph right out of the box. The A.R.C. has a beautiful hand-laid fiberglass hull with full color graphics and a smooth gel coat. Driving the motor is an Atomik 120A water-cooled speed control with BEC (battery eliminating circuit) to power the radio system. The A.R.C. comes with an Atomik 3-channel 2.4GHz transmitter featuring digital trims, dual rates and failsafe. This boat is sure to turn heads on the water delivering electric performance in a gasoline-size hull. The A.R.C is a real performer with a lot to offer, so let’s take a closer look.

HULL Out of the box this cat commands attention with its beautiful bright white, yellow and black graphics scheme under an ultra-smooth clear coat on a hand laid fiberglass hull. The laser-cut plywood internals are engineered for multiple electric configurations. The pre-installed laser-cut radio box and battery tray system will accompany a single 6S LiPo battery and is expandable for up to a 12S dualpack configuration. There are eight thumb screws that hold the acrylic radio box cover in place. The fiberglass gel coat hatch is secured in place with two twist-lock spring-loaded hatch pins for easy tool-less access.

RUNNING HARDWARE Atomik outfitted the A.R.C. with high-grade, lightweight CNC machined aluminum running hardware. The CNC aluminum strut assembly gives you complete adjustability of your prop pitch angle and height so you can tune your boat for optimum performance for the water conditions. A pushrod connects the steering servo to the rudder and passes through a rubber boot that keeps water from entering the hull. The rudder features dual water pickups; one for the motor and one for the ESC to ensure everything is running cool.

POWER SYSTEM When you remove the hatch from a boat this size, the first thing you expect to see is a large gasoline power plant. Not on the A.R.C.! This cat is powered by a 2000 watt brushless outrunner electric motor. This 12 ounce motor can turn a 3-blade prop at over 27,000rpm pushing this boat at speeds in excess of 40mph. Driving the motor is an Atomik 120amp water-cooled ESC. The ESC can run with battery packs ranging from 2 to 6-cells. The motor mount is completely water-cooled which helps dissipate heat from the motor. The motor is coupled to a flex shaft that runs down an aluminum stuffing tube to spin the included CNC machined 54mm 3-blade prop. It is also important to mention that the design of the motor mount and prop drive system lends itself to be customized by the end user. You have the ability to upgrade the power system to meet your racing needs.

ELECTRONICS The laser-cut radio box is attached to the main plywood ribs at the rear of the hull. An acrylic hatch is held securely in place with eight thumb screws to provide a watertight compartment for the radio gear. Inside the box, an Atomik radio system is already installed. An Atomik 1825 high-torque metal-gear servo gives you precise rudder control. To control the boat, Atomik included its 3-channel 2.4GHz radio system. The radio has many features found on high-end systems such as digital trims, dual rates and a failsafe circuit.

PERFORMANCE After staring at the Atomik A.R.C. in the office for hours, I was anxious to get this bad boy on to the water and see what it could do. I headed over to our local pond with a fully charged Venom battery pack and was ready for action. It is a great feeling to head to the water with nothing more than a battery pack. No fuel, no fussing with engine settings–just a fun day on the water ahead.

I placed the A.R.C. into the water and slowly pulled the trigger. The prop immediately bit into the water and started moving the boat with authority. There was no cavitation, just solid grip as if it had tires. I punched the throttle and 2000 watts of power lifted the 13-pound boat out of the water like nothing. It was instantly on plane. Even as the water got choppier, it didn’t seem to make much difference to this large cat. There were a couple of instances where I got a little overzealous and it hit a decent wave at full-throttle, sending the A.R.C. flying into the air. It was amazing to see how balanced the boat was in the air as it landed perfectly in the water, just like you would see with the full-scale cats. The A.R.C. definitely had my heart racing and I was not so “trigger happy” when the next large wave rolled around.

The turning radius on the A.R.C. was surprisingly tight and even on a high-speed tight turn the hull maintained stability with no signs of rolling over. I did tweak the radio a bit to tame the turning radius and I added dual rates so my nervous hands would not oversteer the boat.

Since the boat is marketed to the beginner to intermediate boater, I wanted to really test out its stability. In about 3 to 4-inch chop, I made many high-speed passes, zigging and zagging each time. I really had to work at getting the boat to become unstable and even when I finally got it up on one side of the hull; simply reducing the throttle tamed it right down. The level of stability that the A.R.C. has makes this a great first largescale boat for any boat enthusiast, but it’s sure to keep a seasoned boater on the edge of their seat. After about five minutes I could feel that the battery was starting to lose its charge. As soon as you feel a performance drop, it is good to get the boat back to the dock before the low-voltage cutoff jumps in and has you swimming to retrieve it. With speeds exceeding 40mph, combined with a stable ride, the A.R.C. was a whole lot of fun!

DOCKSIDE DEDUCTIONS The Atomik 58-inch A.R.C. is sure to set a new trend in the model boating world — large electric boats! When it comes to ease of use, simplicity and performance, it is really hard to beat an electric boat. The A.R.C. performed better than most of the gasoline boats that I have run. The hull is hand-crafted and finished with a bright three-color graphics scheme. Atomik outfitted all the running hardware with high-grade CNC aluminum components. Pushing the boat was a quality, 3-blade, CNC machined, aluminum prop. Inside the hull, the laser-cut formers kept everything securely in place and the motor mount is designed for multiple brushless motor configurations. The radio box provides easy access via thumb screws to the radio gear; no more hatch tape! There is no doubt that Atomik has a real winner here with the A.R.C. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned boater, you will love the performance that you get from this big cat. When you couple high-quality components with a rock-solid and stable hull, you have a boat that is going to provide you with countless hours of action on the water.
