To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect in this museum. Upon entering, the exhibits were engaging, and they led me through the history of prohibition.

I learned about the groups that supported it, the groups that dodged it and the economic reasons it was repealed. For adults, it was an engaging history lesson. For kids, it will fall flat.

Take a ghost tour while in Savannah. This town is one of the most haunted in the U.S.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions holds annual CSRA College Night at a new venue

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It was a big night for high school students in our area as Savannah River Nuclear Solutions hosted its annual College Fair. This year, the venue was changed to the Augusta Convention Center.

“I’m very grateful, you know, network and learn more about different colleges and what they offer,” said Alyssa Bryant, a student.

CSRA College Night is where local high school students can get a head start on their future.

“I came here to, like, look at all the options because there is more out there than what we think,” said Carmen Wooten, a student.

High school students could talk to more than 100 colleges and tech schools offering various career paths.

“We can come down and see just about every single college that you could even think about and just kind of get a feel,” said Tripp Rice, Parent.

Students told me they are grateful to have this opportunity so close to them.

“Usually, when we want to do this, we have to travel far away, but we’re glad it’s here right in Augusta, and I’m glad my school supported it,” said Keith Mitchell III, Student.

Since some students may not be able to travel and see what’s available, being able to bring it to them shows that there are opportunities available to them in many areas.

“Some people don’t have the resources to take them all over Georgia to visit colleges,” said Kennedi Freeman, a student.

For some students, this was the first step toward their possible future.

SRNS also awarded 15 1,000-dollar scholarships to seniors at the event to continue supporting the students and helping them grow.

“This is important because they are our future. You know, I mean, they are our next step,” said Cindy Hewitt, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.

Organizers hope college night helps students feel prepared for their next steps.

Riverfest returning to Savannah for third year this weekend

Platinum-selling alternative rock band Sister Hazel takes the stage Saturday in Savannah.

Music will fill the air for three days in downtown Savannah as part of the city’s Third Annual Catfish Derby and Riverfest event. The Riverfest concerts start Friday, Sept. 13, at the Historic Savannah Theater on Court Square in downtown Savannah, featuring Chris Tennessee, Trevor Van and Lightwatch. Doors open at 6 p.m., with music starting at 7 p.m. The festival then moves to Main Street on Saturday, Sept. 14, with artists Sydney Mack, The Band Loula, John Paul White, Cody Canada and The Departed performing. Additionally, Grammy Artist of Tomorrow Award winner Drake White and platinum recording group Sister Hazel will be co-headliners of the festival’s main musical event. Drake White is a country singer whose hit songs include “Making Me Look Again,” and “Livin’ the Dream.” Sister Hazel is an alternative rock band whose hit songs include “All for You,” “Change Your Mind,” and “Champagne High.” On Sunday, Sept. 15, the musical fun continues once again at Tennessee Street Park. Billed as “A Riverfest Revelation: Sunday in the South,” the day showcases Hardin County native Darryl Worley and a Grammy nominated, multifaceted award winning group, The Issacs. Riverfest Chairman Timothy White invites everyone to come out and enjoy all three concerts. “Locals and visitors will have a great time enjoying all the musical fun,” he said. Saturday is also UT Extension’s Second Saturdays event, with vendors offering their homemade wares, fresh grown vegetables, baked goods and more. “The UT Market will move off the farmers pavilion to Main and Court Streets and is free to explore. We do encourage people, whether they will be attending Saturday’s concert or not, to come on by and support local businesses,” White said. The Friday and Saturday concerts are ticketed events. A weekend pass is available at a discount. “The weekend pass is also applicable for Sunday’s concert, but rather than charging a fee, we are asking for people to donate what they can to enjoy the show. We understand not everyone can pay a lot to enjoy live music, so the Riverfest board decided to host this event and let people pay what they can,” White shared. Tickets for the Riverfest concerts can be purchased at Savannah City Hall or online at hubcityevents.com . Concert attendees should bring a lawn chair as there will be no assigned seating. For refreshments, the Savannah Rotary Club is managing the Tennessee Street Park concession stand Friday and Sunday. Food and other items will be available from specialty vendors on Saturday, including Chick-Fil-A, Mollie Mondays, Bamm’s Doughburgers, Liquid Hitch and more. Friday’s concert starts at 7 p.m., gates open at 1 p.m. for Saturday’s concert, and the “Riverfest Revelation: Sunday in the South,” concert starts at 3 p.m. Musical fun may be the highlight for September, but the excitement continues with the National Catfish Derby Fishing Tournament in October. “We are happy to have the tournament returning this year and we are very excited that this year’s event will be hosted by legendary fisherman Bill Dance,” White shared. He added, “This year we are also taking the Derby back to its roots as an actual week-long contest. There will be weigh-ins at various locations throughout Savannah, which will be announced through the Derby’s social media pages, with the main weigh-in event being on Main Street in front of Savannah Market on Saturday, Oct. 12.” In addition to the final weigh-in, there will be live music featuring Trey Nichols, Ty Moore and Cole Nichols. There will be food vendors at the farmers market, and Mama Fia’s and Hickory Pit are within walking distance. “The event is free and the biggest attraction is likely that Bill Dance will be there for the final weigh-ins, so come on out and have a good time while meeting a fishing legend,” White said. Additional information is available on the Catfish Derby and Riverfest Facebook page.

Denmark Technical College graduates 24 new apprentices for Savannah River

riverboat savannah

The Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina recently began onboarding 24 graduates from Denmark Technical College in Denmark, S.C., as part of SRS’s Production Operator Apprentice School.

DTC is one of three schools, along with Aiken Technical College and Augusta Technical College, to join the SRS apprenticeship school since its inception four years ago. The school offers a variety of programs focused on working in the nuclear community. More information on the apprenticeship school is available online .

Work: Most DTC graduates will go to work for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), the managing and operating contractor at SRS, in what is called the Savannah River Tritium Enterprise, which involves U.S. defense activities. Other graduates have been hired for other SRNS facilities and for facilities run by Savannah River Mission Completion, the liquid waste contractor at SRS.

About: The Production Operator Apprentice Program started as a partnership between SRNS, Aiken Technical College, Apprenticeship Carolina, and the Lower Savannah Council of Governments.

The eight-month program simultaneously allows for students to complete their classroom work and on-the-job training by allowing them to alternate between taking classes at the technical college and receiving training at SRS while earning a competitive, scalable wage.

At the end of the program, participants will have earned a certificate in nuclear fundamentals and will have a portable credential from the Department of Labor. Since its inception, the program has graduated more than 420 students, according to the DOE.

Quotable: "I could not be prouder of our 24 new nuclear fundamentals graduates,” said Willie L. Todd Jr., DTC president and chief executive officer. “They are stepping into a workforce that is in critical need of their expertise, helping to close the gap in this vital industry. We are honored to have provided them with a quality education that not only equips them to succeed but also positions them to build generational wealth and create lasting legacies in their communities."

“The mission of Denmark Technical College is to engage, educate, and empower students,” said Hadi Hamid, DTC associate vice president of industrial-related technologies and workforce. “This program is a shining example of that mission in action. [The students’] successes are a statement to the transformative power of education.”

Savannah Riverboat

Savannah Riverboat Cruises was established in Savannah, Georgia in 1991 under the direction of experienced Captain, Jonathan H. Claughton.  Savannah’s antebellum charm, with flowing Spanish moss hanging from stoic live oaks and welcoming shady squares, hearkens back to the days when paddle driven riverboats full of tourists and locals dotted the Savannah River.

With the founding of the company, Capt. Claughton sought to bring a dinner cruise tour to Savannah.  After doing his research, he invested in the River Queen, a 400 passenger vessel.  This riverboat served him, and his guests,w ell as he and his crew welcomed those in Savannah to learn the history of this great port city.

In 1997,after six years of success, Capt. Claughton expanded the company and added an additional riverboat, the 550 passenger Georgia Queen.

Both riverboats feature two climate-controlled dining decks and an open-air third deck.  Decked out in traditional red, white and blue riverboat colors, these elegantly appointed boats cannot help but draw visitors back to a time when gentility and relaxation was always in vogue.

In winter 2007, the company welcomed the newest edition to their fleet, the 600 passenger New Savannah River Queen.  This boat features three climate controlled dining rooms, three bars, and a top deck snack shop.  The Savannah River Queen has two large dining areas perfect for large groups and an open air, covered third deck patio space.  The third deck also features a VIP room capable of accommodating 36 people.

The company has expanded, developed and established itself as an anchor among historic River Street’s  icons.

When asked what makes his company successful, Capt Claughton mused, “If you give good service, the public will flock to the waterfront and enjoy what you have to offer.  I cannot help to think this is the winning formula if you run a small ferry boat or a multi-state excursion operation.”

When asked about the future, Claughton said, “We will continue to be a center stage fixture on River Street.  We have seen a slow and steady growth through the years.  I know we will continue to expand.”

This expansion has led to the arrival in 2016 of a new riverboat, the Georgia Queen.  The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 ft long,64 ft wide and a towering 68 ft tall and features three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space, a 5,000 square foot, fully open-air top deck with patio seating.  The entire boat encompasses a total of 38,000 square feet.  She can carry 1,000 passengers plus 200 crew, which makes her the size of a small cruise ship.

The riverboat tours leave the dock right next to the exact location where General Oglethrope first landed on the river front and head upriver, into the Port of Savannah, and then turn around and head back under the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge and past the historic river front.  The tours continue downriver passing the world famous Waving Girl, Florence Martus, through the ship yards and just past the tip of Hutchinson Island and Old Fort Jackson.  There, the boat circles back upriver to arrive gently back at the dock.
