The south of Europe is multifaceted and characterized by lively lightness. There is a lot to discover here: charming artists’ villages in France, the Moorish heritage of Spain, the cultural cities of Italy, the treasures of antiquity in the Aegean, the island idylls of the Cyclades, baroque splendor on the Adriatic Sea. Depending on your mood, you can enjoy the Mediterranean way of life perfectly.
Full of flair: Italy, France and Spain
Western mediterranean.
Winding lanes and grand boulevards, magnificent cathedrals and Moorish palaces – the Western Mediterranean entices with enthralling history and appealing art, ebullient joie de vivre and fascinating nature. The region is not only a dreamlike sailing area, but also enchants with exciting history, delightful art experiences, varied landscapes and joyful ease.
The many facets of Sicily
The central location of the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea has always aroused great interest: Whether as a colony, a strategic outpost or a trading center. With 3,000 years of cultural history, sunny Sicily impresses as an island with a multitude of facets: with the highest and most active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna, ancient temples and theaters and charming towns and villages, each with its own unique character.
The splendid treasures of the Adriatic Sea
In Venice, you think you are walking through a living painting. Until the 16th century, the romantic lagoon city was a powerful trading center, where the nobility immortalized themselves with magnificent palaces and churches. The influence of the Venetians can still be felt in the entire Adriatic – the territory of that time – even today. Between thousands of small islands, countless new impressions await you: From the impressive waterfalls in the Croatian National Park Krka to the brick-red sea of roofs of Dubrovnik, from the lush green pine forests of Istria to the magnificent mosaics in Ravenna, the Adriatic proudly shows that it has more than just a pearl to offer.
Course to legendary Greek Islands
Eastern mediterranean.
Fearless sailors, merciless gods and immortal poets – anyone who sails the Aegean Sea under full sails experiences the world of myths and legends first hand. In the legendary Aegean light, the fabulous Cyclades and Sporades present their brilliant blue and white panorama. And among olive groves and pine forests, fine sandy beaches, old monasteries and antique sites, Greece shows itself as a pure idyll.

All you need to know about Mediterranean Cruises & Vacations Packages
What is the best time of year to cruise the mediterranean.
You can head off on a Mediterranean cruise anytime from April to November. Spring brings gorgeous blooms and mild weather, autumn brings fresh produce and harvest festivals, while summer is peak season and for good reason. From June to August, the Mediterranean shines with endless sun and long days to soak up the stunning beaches.
What is the best part of a cruise ship to stay on?
It all depends on how you like to travel. If you’re prone to seasickness, go for a cabin on the lowest level in the center of the ship for the least swaying. If you want the best view, go for a room with a window on the higher levels of the ship. The higher decks are also closer to the pools, whereas if you're looking to be closer to entertainment areas, go for a room in the middle of the ship.
Where can I travel in the Mediterranean?
Dreaming of a Mediterranean vacation? You’ll be spoiled for choice when picking a destination. From the sunny shores of Italy, Spain and Turkey, to Greece and Croatia's gorgeous islands, and the lesser-known gems like Montenegro, Albania and Slovenia, there are endless places to travel in the Mediterranean. Take your pick!
Where are the best beaches in the Mediterranean?
You’ll discover some of the world’s most spectacular beaches in the Mediterranean, with soft white sands, brilliant turquoise water, lush greenery and soaring cliffs. For the most showstopping beaches of them all, head to the likes of Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Croatia and Montenegro. You’re sure to find your new favorite beach here.

This Is the New Way to Cruise the Mediterranean
A new generation of expedition cruise ships are bringing a completely reimagined style of cruising to the mediterranean..

Atlas Ocean Voyages’ 196-passenger World Traveller is equal parts polar expedition ship and luxury yacht—perfectly suited for exploring the villages and coastal coves of the Med.
Photo by Rupert Peace/Atlas Ocean Voyages
Lunching on fresh fish and sipping ice-cold rosé in a cove where private yachts anchor to play in the turquoise waters off of Sardinia, it was hard to believe I was traveling on a sister ship to the one that took me through the notoriously rough Drake Passage and a blizzard with hurricane-force winds last year in Antarctica.
Instead of learning about and braving the cold to search for penguins, whales, and seals, we were making pasta with an Italian chef, wandering neighborhood fish and produce markets, competing in onboard cook-offs, and sampling local wines and cuisine.
Welcome to the new generation of expedition cruising.
While the sector has traditionally been associated with sailings to much colder and more remote regions of the world, such as the Arctic and Antarctica, that is changing, thanks to a growing number of modern, upscale expedition ships that are a lot more like luxury yachts and sail in warmer waters for part of the year.
What expedition sailings offer “is a deeper dive wherever you go,” according to Mara Papatheodorou, our onboard culinary expert during a July “epicurean expedition” in the Mediterranean with Atlas Ocean Voyages , an American expedition cruise company that launched in 2021.
Atlas is among several expedition lines offering new and expanded sailings in destinations such as the Mediterranean, where, rather than taking a deep dive into exploring glaciers, icebergs, and polar wildlife, they are using the same equipment to bring passengers closer to the beauty and richness of places like Italy, Greece, Spain, and France—in high style.
With fewer passengers on board, vessels like the World Traveller typically feature larger staterooms and suites than standard cruise ships do.
Sailing the Mediterranean, expedition-style
Our 12-day Mediterranean sailing aboard Atlas’s 196-passenger World Traveller began in Rome and ended in Athens, a popular route for ships of all sizes. But save for a stop in Barcelona, we never saw another ship as we traveled along the coast of Italy, France, and Greece, and to small ports and islands such as Elba, Portovenere, Sicily, and Sardinia in Italy, as well as Nice along the French Riviera, the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca, and the picturesque city of Chania on the Greek isle Crete.
While the trip was admittedly anything but the extreme adventure I would normally associate with the term expedition , it offered an intimate, casual, and luxurious way to explore away from the masses. Rather than the natural and wildlife immersion you get during polar cruises, these sailings focus on culinary and cultural immersion on and off the ship. Although, unlike with polar sailings—during which outings are included—excursions do cost extra.
In the port city of Sète in southeastern France, we sampled local oysters and tuna during a culinary walking tour before happening upon a water jousting tournament along the main canal. An unusual sport that dates back to the 1600s, water jousting involves players who stand on ladders that stretch from huge row boats and try to knock each other off into the water as the town cheers from the sidelines.
In Sicily, we visited one of the original Marsala wine houses (where the fortified Sicilian wine is made) outside of the city of Trapani in the west. We also took a chef-led tour through a neighborhood market in Messina on the northeastern tip of the island, where the ship’s chef bought some of the region’s famed sweet yellow tomatoes, prosciutto, and local cheeses that he used to make a special appetizer for our dinner that night.
On the Spanish island of Menorca, we went to the fishing village of Fornells, where some of the guests did a food- and gin-focused walking tour. I jumped at the chance to enjoy the cool Mediterranean water on a kayaking and snorkeling excursion among underwater rock formations and caves.
During Mediterranean cruises, Atlas Ocean Voyages puts a strong focus on cuisine, serving local dishes on board (left) and guiding passengers through fresh produce and fish markets (right).

Mostly, it was all about the food, with both onboard and offboard activities offering Papatheodorou’s promised deep dives into the history of the region’s famed cuisine and wines.
Papatheodorou, a culinary expert, editor, and television producer, was our epicurean leader. She taught us about the history of the region’s foods and wines while emceeing pasta-cooking classes with Marcello Zaccaria—who has worked as Academia Barilla’s executive chef since 2001—wine tasting with a Sicilian sommelier, and chocolate making with Julieta Davey, a Costa Rican sustainability-focused chocolatier who is also known as Mama Cacao.
While many onboard cruise activities can be snooze-worthy lectures designed to fill time at sea, that wasn’t the case with Atlas. True to the educational spirit of expedition cruising, the lectures, cooking lessons, tastings, and talks on the ship were interactive, entertaining, and informative. Who knew there was such an art to pairing the right size pasta with the right sauce? It’s something Papatheodorou referred to as “the cling factor.” Or that you can cook your pasta right in the sauce, rather than boiling it separately?
Besides learning to make dishes like traditional pesto pasta and aglio e olia , or pasta with olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes, guests participated in cook-offs to see who could take a table full of varied ingredients to make the best Greek salads and chocolate desserts using select provided ingredients.
And there’s nothing like a little healthy competition to bond with and get to know the true colors of your fellow travelers.
The growing trend of polar ships getting off the Arctic trail
Atlas, one of the newer entrants to the small-ship expedition market, having launched in 2021, first created its epicurean adventures in the Mediterranean last year for summer sailings when its ships are not sailing Antarctica or the Arctic Circle. With the launch of a third ship last November, the company has expanded its warmer-water offerings to include cultural expeditions in South America, Morocco, and the Azores.
It’s a growing trend among both the more mainstream ultra-luxury lines, such as Viking and Seabourn, that have entered the expedition space and more traditional polar adventure operators.
While the World Traveller was purpose-built for polar, there are ample benefits to sailing with this luxury, intimate expedition ship elsewhere in the world.
Courtesy of Atlas Ocean Voyages
Aurora Expeditions , for example, which has offered Arctic and Antarctic cruises for more than 30 years, in 2026 will for the first time expand beyond the polar regions to offer immersive itineraries in destinations such as Indonesia, Borneo, the Mediterranean, the British Isles, and the Atlantic Coast.
And Aqua Expeditions , which began as a luxury river-cruise operator in the Amazon and expanded to river ships in Southeast Asia and explorer yachts in Galapagos and East Indonesia, just announced plans for a sixth ship, an explorer yacht that will sail the Seychelles, Zanzibar, and Tanzania beginning late in 2025.
Like Atlas, Aurora Expedition ships were built for the harsh polar regions. But unlike the basic exploration and ice-breaking vessels of the past that aren’t exactly known for plush accommodations or hotel-style extras, these newer-generation, under-200-passenger expedition ships offer modern luxurious amenities such as spas, pools, and gourmet cuisine in a casual, intimate, and upscale atmosphere. In other words, being more polished, they translate well to the yacht-like style and vibes of destinations such as the Mediterranean.
Another bonus is that on Atlas and Aurora alike, most standard cabins are larger than those on traditional cruise ships, with balconies, sitting areas, and oversize showers. Public spaces include glass-domed observation lounges with sweeping views, outdoor grills on the pool for dining alfresco, and sophisticated lecture halls for insightful presentations.
The best part, of course, is the ability to anchor off and dock in ports that big ships can’t get to.
Call it expedition, immersive adventure, hybrid, or expedition light. Whatever term you prefer, I call it small-ship cruising at its best.

Our Island Girls are fully-crewed and feature air-conditioned cabins, private bathrooms, portholes, and all modern comforts.
Your Captain sets the course. Each day is a new adventure. Free your mind from schedules, and savor each moment as the crew hoists the sails, the trade winds fill the canvas, and you set off to your next secret island destination.
There’s no rush. You’ll have plenty of time ashore to explore vibrant villages, sip rum at quirky beach bars, or laze the days away on pristine beaches.
Even the nights are magical. Shipmates gather on deck to dance, share a joke or tell tales of the day’s adventures. Lean on the rail, and steal a kiss under a canopy of stars.
Live in the now, and breathe it all in. This is island life--and you’re living it!

Small Ship Mediterranean Cruises: Where to Sail
Where to go in this widespread, popular destination? The following is an overview of Mediterranean small ship cruise regions, with notes on the best places for small ship. Our guidance on where to sail in the Mediterranean is separated into four broad categories based on the most common small ship Mediterranean cruise routes:
Cruises to Croatia, Dalmatian Coast, Albania, Montenegro
The southernmost shoreline of Croatia, running from the island of Rab south to the Bay of Kotor, is a popular stretch of coastline for Adriatic Sea cruises. Almost all Croatia small ship cruises visit this Dalmatia region, one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean.
Historic hillside towns made of brick and terracotta drop down to the sea in dramatic fashion. Fortified castles standing guard at the water’s edge (some of which can be seen in the TV series “Game of Thrones.”) This trendy region offers ancient Roman marble palaces, quiet beaches on small off-shore islands, cultural dances by engaging locals, world-renowned wine tasting and delectable dishes. Other Adriatic Sea cruise routes aboard small ships include the ports of Venice, Naples or even Athens.
Small Ship Greek Island Cruises
Greece is one of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising destinations. With over 200 islands they are ideal for small ship cruising. Many small ship Greek Island cruises hit the popular ports of Mykonos and Santorini as well as the Corinth Canal. But we recommend routes that explore lesser known gems too. We recommend Peloponnese Peninsula and Cyclades cruises, which operate round-trip from Athens, Greece. Select routes take you far north as Corfu and the other Ionian Islands. Some itineraries even connect south to Egypt!
Combining Greece & Turkey, Croatia or Egypt
If you’re looking to go farther afield, some Greece small ship cruises continue on to visit other nearby countries. The Aegean Sea takes center stage for small ship cruises to Turkey and Greece. The Aegean Islands are a collection of stunning landscapes, historical monuments and mythical legends. They are mostly under Greek sovereignty, though some eastern islands and smaller islets are under Turkish rule.
Turkey’s Bodrum with its Mausoleum at Halicarnassus one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the vibrant Kusadasi market are highlights for cruises that include Turkey.
Small ship Mediterranean cruises that sail up the western coast of Greece and into the Adriatic Sea often include stops in Albania and Montenegro before finishing in Croatia. On a Dubrovnik to Athens cruise, for example, you can see the highlights of both of these iconic countries while not setting foot in an airport. These extended Croatia small ship cruise options are all excellent choices if you have time for a longer sailing.
Small Ship Cruises in Italy, Malta & Beyond
Italy has long been one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean, but the small ship experience provides unique insights and exclusive access to sites not often visited. Unspoiled clifftop towns, sites of antiquity and incredible food and wine are highlights of Italy cruises.
Mediterranean small ship cruises that include stops in Italy are fast-becoming favorites for travelers who want to skip crowded overland travel.
Look for popular routes from Venice or Naples that include Capri, Dubrovnik, Croatia, or small islets in the Adriatic Sea. Opt for cruises around Sicily and Malta, or continue west with Mediterranean small ship cruise itineraries that visit other must-see ports.

What Our Travelers Say About Their Mediterranean Cruise
Photo by Adventure Specialist Andrew Browning
AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AdventureSmith.
Accommodations, ship and staff were all excellent. Met several great people/couples, all were enjoyable. The Smithsonian lectures and tour guides were very good.
We enjoyed everything from the accommodations, tours, food and like-minded guests. We definitely have great memories and would recommend this trip to other friends and family.
All was great - from pre planning to the actual travel.
The staff was wonderful! The children love them.
Both the Sea Cloud and the land explorations were superb. We found Corsica to be particularly fascinating.
AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AS. The trip included 5 days in Athens, Greece and a week aboard the Sea Cloud through Lindblad. We found Lindblad a little rigid to work with during the planning stages. In Greece, they were outstanding. The Sea Cloud is a gorgeous sailing barque. The crew, both Lindblad and Sea Cloud, were warm, gracious and a delight to sail with. My wife had always wanted to visit Greece. I love sailing. The combination got us.
I think Santorini was a top destination. It's a beautiful island that I would stay on. The smaller islands were interesting as well.
Accommodations Review
Room was, as expected, tight quarters. It's an old ship, after all. The public areas are great. The upper deck is a beautiful place for cocktails, or just relaxing. Seeing the Sea Cloud under sail is a real treat.
Meals Review
Food was excellent. I think I probably gained weight, but that's my fault. I preferred the buffet dinners to the served ones. Variety was excellent. Lot's of great salads. Good seafood and fresh fish.
Crew & Guides Review
All of the people leading the expedition are true professionals. They know their stuff. One of the regular speakers has her PHD in archeology and is a real expert on the region and Greek history. I was really impressed with all of them. The two regular guides are Greek and have many years experience in the areas we visited. One of our Lindblad guides, a native Greek, was much too insistent on trying to tell us all about the Greek Orthodox religion. As a non-Christian, I found it a little off-putting. She knew her stuff, but seemed anxious to proselytize...
AdventureSmith Explorations Review
Between AdventureSmith and Lindblad, we were well prepared. We made our own flight arrangements, but AS was very helpful. I cannot say enough good about our experience both with AdventureSmith and with Lindblad.

First, the "dinners" would not stop me from recommending the cruise. For a French cruise line I had very high expectations, maybe too high. Other passengers had similar comments. Overall good, 5 star vessel, 3 star dinners. Other meals very good.
Overall good. Some details on shore excursion's were lacking. More free time at each would be have been nice.
Itinerary Review
All [places were] enjoyable in there different ways. The hiking excursion although very interesting was poorly planned, more difficult (for the old passengers) and much longer than we were told.
Very thorough with all the details.

- Le Jacques Cartier
The vessel was well appointed and had everything we needed for our week long stay. The staff was great as well and worked so hard to make sure everyone was happy and attended to.
I especially liked the local cuisine that they provided, with the wonderful Greek Salads and other selections. The only improvement on breakfast would be to provide brewed coffee as what was provided was instant coffee in tea-like bags That would probably be the only improvement.
Dittmar, the manager on board/tour director who did everything to provide us with information, changing tours to meet the changing weather conditions and providing information in a very professional, upbeat and pleasant way. He really kept everything going smoothly on board. He was very organized, provided excellent information on each island and really was great in every way. We also met one of the owners of the Variety ships, Christian, who introduced himself upon our arrival to the boat. That was a surprise!
I really liked ALL the locations we visited but enjoyed most Monemvassia and Santorini. We had a fantastic trip. Although we experienced some cooler/windier weather than is normal for this time of year, everything worked out really well. The ship staff was awesome and was professional, personable and thorough. Due to rough waters they had to turn the itinerary around and make all new tour reservations and many other last minute arrangements, adding a few different locations than expected. They did all this very well.
Transportation Review
All transportation arrangements went very smoothly and we were either provided the transportation or given the information (hotel in Athens) we needed to make our own. The hotel suggested was beautiful and first rate, with amazing views of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant.
Fellow Passengers Review
We can't say enough good things about all the passengers on board (that we met). There was a group of 30 Road Scholar passengers that we did not interact with too much, but all the other passengers were so pleasant, likeable and very well traveled. We got to know many very well and joined them for meals and tours and restaurants off the boat as well.
Andrew Browning, whom we have used several times to book trips, did his usual great job answering questions and provided timely information and everything we needed ahead of the trip. We have been on a number of trips with family over the years with AdventureSmith and we look forward to many more. Each trip is so memorable and provides great bonding time. I always recommend people to go to your website when looking for a trip.
Traveler Advice
Go to Greece, as we did, during the shoulder months like May and September when the hoards of people are not there. We never had to fight the crowds as you do in the summer months. With climate change, be prepared for unexpected weather and be flexible with tours being changed due to inclimate weather. If travelers are looking for culture, history and beautiful scenery, this is a great place to go!

Athens hotel was a great location, nice rooms and pool. Older but great for our needs. Ship room was good sized and nice, common decks and dining areas were good. Dated but ideal for our needs.
Breakfast on the ship offered a lot of choices but was pretty much the same each morning.
Athens Delphi tour was great - bus ride took about 2+ hours each way. Syros, Flegandros and Paros were my favorite islands with each having good sites to visit and not too big with good food/shops. Mykonos and Santorini islands where good but very busy and my least favorite.
Airport transportation was on time, nice vehicles and driver.
Perfect group with similar age adult/children. Everyone was active.
The tour guides at Delphi and Parthenon were very good and knowledgeable. Athens guide were great.
Great planning.
- Jewels of the Cyclades
The Galileo was very clean and functional. The staff was wonderful! The children love them. The chef was able to accomodate dietary restrictions easily. The food was wonderful! We liked the swim stops. We enjoyed the tours of the islands. Least enjoyed: It rained and the long trip back to Athens on the rough sea was LONG. We were grateful that the weather was beautiful for the rest of the trip.
Sea Cloud continues to be a classic! Well maintained and very well run.
Even better than ever! John is thoughtful, attentive to the group's needs as well as to the individuals in the group.
COVID Logistics
A great travel experience that took great care to minimize the Covid risk and maximize the journey for all of us.

Mediterranean sailing: where to cruise
- Theo Stocker
- October 22, 2021
Home to a hugely diverse cruising area, whether on your own boat or on a charter, there are literally dozens of options to consider when Mediterranean sailing, says Lu Heikell

Mediterranean sailing: where to cruise next season
Mediterranean Sailing: some of the best locations to cruise. Credit: Maxine Heath
With warm (sometimes too warm) air and sea temperatures the season in the Mediterranean runs much longer than in more northern European climes, writes Lu Heikell .
Here are a few of our favourite areas, writes Lu Heikell .
Mediterranean sailing: The Balearic Islands
Located 50 miles off the Valencian coast of Spain, the Balearic Islands comprise the four main islands of Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca, and several smaller islands including Cabrera and Espalmador.
Together they represent one of the most popular cruising areas of the Mediterranean.
Harbours , marinas and anchorages are dotted at convenient distances around the coast, allowing a mix of remote, secluded bays and cosmopolitan towns.
In high season it is undoubtedly busy, both on land and sea, but as well as forming stepping-stones while heading through the Mediterranean, they are well worth a visit if you have the opportunity.

The inland towns and countryside are well worth exploring as a surprisingly tranquil place away from the crowded coastal areas.
Marina prices are always high but can be eye-watering in high season, but the Port de Baleares ports are well worth seeking out for more reasonable charges.
Charter yachts are widely available. Anchorages abound, so in the settled summer months there are plenty of options. Each island has its own ‘flavour’.

Ibiza, the westernmost island, is known as the party island, and sadly much of the coast has been built up, leaving little genuinely untouched coast.
Formentera, and the adjoining island of Espalmador, are for the most part low-lying islands close south of Ibiza.
Its reputation is of a more laid-back relaxed vibe, and is comparatively undeveloped. In Puerto del Espalmador there is a good almost all-round sheltered anchorage.
Mallorca is the largest island, the cultural and political hub, and Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the region.
At 50 miles ENE from Ibiza, it can be reached in a long day sail. Bahia de Pollensa is a good jumping-off point for those heading to Menorca, and a decent spot to provision up if necessary.
Menorca, the easternmost island, is known for its rugged beauty, and in Mahon has one of the largest natural harbours in the region.
The detached pontoons here are perhaps the best value berths to be found in the summer months.
Tuscany & the Tuscan Islands
The Tuscany coast runs from Viareggio and Pisa down to Monte Argentario in the south. Offshore lie the main Tuscan islands of Capraia, Elba and Giglio.
The Tuscan archipelago is a popular cruising ground for yachts and the patchwork of islands between Corsica and the mainland provide conveniently spaced stepping stones.
The islands are covered by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, which has restricted areas on all the islands, and the islands of Gorgona, Pianosa and Montechristo are totally prohibited areas.

The Tuscan mainland offers little in the way of anchorages, but the major towns of Viareggio, Pisa and Livorno all offer visiting berths that shouldn’t break the bank, and fine bases to explore the renaissance city of Florence, the Etruscan coast and to experience the famous Viareggio autumn carnival.
And yes, I do have the picture of me ‘holding up’ the famous leaning tower!

Europe’s Atlantic coast: the best places to cruise
The Atlantic coast of Europe runs from Ushant to Gibraltar, and, with the Atlantic Islands thrown in, is a vast…
The islands are a natural escape, with more opportunities to anchor , though certainly fewer than around the Balearics. Capraia lies just 16 miles east of Cap Corse and is a former prison island.
Aside from yacht traffic there is little to disturb this largely tranquil place.
Elba is the major island, well known as the subject of the Napoleonic palindrome ‘Able was I ere I saw Elba’.
Porto Azzurro is one of the many attractive harbours on Elba. Credit: Lu Heikell
The coast is much indented and there are numerous attractive harbours and anchorages.
Portoferraio is the main harbour, built under the walls of the 16th century citadel and lined with handsome 18th century merchants’ houses.
Depending on the wind direction good shelter can be found on the north and south coast, while Porto Azzurro on the east coast is another picturesque gem.
Isola del Giglio and Isola Giannutri are the southernmost islands and the anchorages here can be busy, but remain a cooler option than the mainland in the heat of the summer.
Greece and Turkey
Greece and Turkey are undoubtably two of the most popular destinations for sailors in the Mediterranean.
Whether you decide to base your own boat here, or charter a yacht for a shorter visit, few fail to return to this sailing paradise.
Depending on your experience levels, or your inclination, each region offers something for everyone – the gentler winds of the Ionian, the remoteness of the Peloponnese, the boisterous breezes blasting through the Cyclades islands, cosmopolitan Istanbul, or the late summer warmth of the Dodecanese and the southern Turkish coast.
Turkey is not a Schengen country so UK sailors can take their time. Credit: Lu Heikell
You will find the stamp of history jostling with modern day life literally everywhere you go.
Our picks to escape the busiest spots in Greece would be the southern Peloponnese around Kalamata, northern Greece with Kavala, Thasos and Samothraki, and the Cyclades, Eastern Sporades and northern Dodecanese, using either Mitilini (Lesvos) or Lakki (Leros) as a base.
In Turkey, long-term berthing options are available at reasonable prices, and it has the benefit for UK visitors that stays here do not eat into your Schengen time allowance.

You can sail into the heart of the city in Istanbul, or explore the extensive natural anchorages between Bodrum and Finike on the south coast.
The Gulf of Gokova and the Gulf of Fethiye remain very unspoilt and hold some of our favourite anchorages.
Turkish food, Turkish hospitality and, of course, Turkish carpets are all legendary and will be found everywhere, though they say that the best carpets come from Milas, near Bodrum.
Mediterranean sailing: What you need to know
Mediterranean summers are generally warm, sometimes very hot, and settled.
Shoulder seasons are warmer than Atlantic coasts, with seasons extending the further south and east you go.
Sailing and swimming in southern Turkey in early November is not unusual.
Cruising hubs

Picture yourself sailing through turquoise waters, past ancient ruins, and along sun-kissed beaches—this is the magic of a Mediterranean cruise . Every port invites you to explore a rich blend of history, culture, and unforgettable landscapes. But to truly make the most of this adventure, choosing the right cruise line is key.
Whether you’re drawn to intimate, luxurious small ships or prefer the bustling energy of massive floating resorts packed with family-friendly activities, the best Mediterranean cruise lines cater to every type of traveler. From luxury seekers to budget-conscious adventurers, each cruise line offers a unique experience that can transform your trip.
This guide will help you navigate the different options, considering factors like ship size, itinerary, dining, and onboard atmosphere to match your personal travel style. Whether you prefer the refined elegance of Celebrity Cruises or the family-friendly excitement of MSC, selecting the cruise line that aligns with your preferences will ensure your Mediterranean voyage is everything you dreamed of—and more.
Types of Cruise Lines Operating in the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean offers diverse cruise options to suit every taste and budget. From opulent luxury vessels to affordable, family-friendly adventures and wallet-conscious trips, you’ll find the perfect fit for your dream vacation.
Luxury Cruise Lines
Suppose you’re seeking the crème de la crème of Mediterranean cruising. In that case, luxury lines like Regent Seven Seas , Seabourn , and Silversea offer unparalleled experiences. These smaller ships access exclusive ports and provide all-inclusive perks such as:
- Spacious suites with balconies
- Personal butlers
- Gourmet dining with premium drinks
- Intimate onboard atmosphere
- Shore excursions included in the fare
The high staff-to-guest ratio ensures personalized attention, anticipating every need. Regent Seven Seas stands out with fully all-inclusive packages covering everything from airfare to excursions. Silversea and Seabourn also excel with butler service, fine wines, and access to smaller, less-crowded ports.
These luxury lines frequently offer longer itineraries, giving you ample time to discover hidden gems along the Mediterranean coast.
Premium Cruise Lines
For a touch of elegance without the luxury price tag, premium cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Viking Ocean Cruises hit the sweet spot. These lines offer a refined yet accessible experience, with modern ships, diverse dining options, and quality entertainment.
What can you expect?
- Stylish, comfortable staterooms
- Upscale amenities like specialty restaurants and adults-only areas
- Sophisticated entertainment and enrichment options
Celebrity Cruises is known for its focus on wellness, offering state-of-the-art spas, fitness centers, and innovative dining. Viking Ocean Cruises caters to adults with a culturally enriching atmosphere, all-veranda staterooms, and complimentary shore excursions. Princess Cruises blends traditional and contemporary cruising, featuring its “Movies Under the Stars” concept and diverse itineraries exploring popular and off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Mainstream Cruise Lines
Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line dominate the mainstream cruise market, making them ideal for first-time cruisers and families. These immense ships are like floating resorts, offering a variety of activities and entertainment options.
Features include:
- Rock climbing walls, water parks, and go-kart tracks
- Multiple dining venues
- Broadway-style shows
- Kids’ clubs, teen hangouts, and virtual reality gaming
Mainstream lines cater to a broad audience, providing something for everyone. Whether you want to join a cooking class, relax by the pool, or try your luck at the casino, these ships keep you entertained between Mediterranean ports.
Royal Caribbean is known for its innovative ships, offering unique activities like ice skating and Broadway shows. Norwegian Cruise Line’s ‘Freestyle Cruising’ gives you flexibility with dining and entertainment choices. This means you can dine when and where you want, and enjoy a variety of entertainment options at your leisure, including virtual reality gaming zones. MSC Cruises, a European line, blends Italian style with international flair, featuring Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and multilingual staff.
Budget-Friendly Cruise Lines
Want to explore the Mediterranean without breaking the bank? Budget-friendly options like Costa Cruises, MSC (in some markets), and Pullmantur offer affordable Mediterranean itineraries that deliver great value.
What to expect:
- Lower upfront fares
- Basic amenities
- Fewer included extras
- Older or smaller ships
These cruises are perfect for travelers who prioritize exploring ports over onboard luxuries. While the accommodations and dining options may be more streamlined, you’ll still experience beautiful Mediterranean destinations at a fraction of the cost of luxury lines.
Costa Cruises offers affordable itineraries with an Italian twist, featuring lively entertainment and a casual atmosphere. Pullmantur Cruises, a Spanish line, offers all-inclusive packages at attractive prices. Its mix of European and international passengers creates a unique onboard experience.
While budget lines may lack the bells and whistles of premium cruises, they provide excellent value for travelers who want to explore the Mediterranean on a budget. Offering comfortable accommodations and a range of dining and entertainment options, these cruises ensure you get the most out of your travel budget.
Best Mediterranean Cruise Lines: Specialized Experiences
Mediterranean cruises are not just about beautiful beaches and stunning views. They offer a diverse range of experiences tailored to your interests and travel style. From immersive cultural encounters to active adventures and family-friendly activities, there’s a world of excitement waiting for every type of traveler.
Cultural Enrichment
Mediterranean cruises provide a gateway to rich cultural experiences. You’ll have the chance to explore ancient ruins, world-class museums, and iconic landmarks. Many cruise lines offer onboard lectures and workshops led by experts in history, art, and local cuisine.
If you love immersing yourself in new cultures, consider sailing with Oceania Cruises or Viking Ocean Cruises. These cruise lines are known for their focus on cultural experiences. Onboard, you can attend engaging port lectures that dive into the history and highlights of the next destination.
You can visit the Parthenon in ports like Athens, while Rome beckons with the Colosseum. Florence allows you to marvel at Michelangelo’s David. Some cruise lines arrange exclusive tours of popular sites, giving you a more intimate experience. Food and wine enthusiasts will delight in culinary shore excursions. You might find yourself at an olive oil tasting in Tuscany or learning to make authentic paella in Valencia.
These experiences ensure you return home with lasting memories and more profound knowledge of the regions you visit.
Adventure and Active Cruising
For those seeking thrills, Mediterranean cruises now cater to adventure seekers. You can choose from various active excursions that get your heart pumping while showcasing the region’s natural beauty.
Options often include:
- Kayaking along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast
- Hiking volcanic trails in Santorini
- Cycling through Tuscan vineyards
- Snorkeling in the clear waters of the Greek Isles
Windstar and Azamara are great choices for those seeking adventure and a more hands-on experience. These cruise lines focus on active itineraries that offer opportunities for adventure. Windstar specializes in yachting experiences. You can sail to secluded beaches or hidden coves that larger ships can’t reach.
Azamara is known for its adventure-focused excursions. Think hiking through scenic landscapes or exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations. These cruises offer thrilling activities for active travelers.
You may also find adventurous options onboard. Some cruise lines offer onboard rock climbing walls, surf simulators, and ropes courses to keep you active at sea. You’ll find specialized fitness classes tailored to your itinerary, like yoga on deck as you sail into Venice.
Family-Oriented Cruises
Mediterranean cruises can be an excellent choice for families, offering activities and amenities for all ages. Many ships feature kids’ clubs with age-appropriate programs, allowing parents some relaxation time.
Family-friendly shore excursions might include:
- Gladiator School in Rome
- Pizza-making classes in Naples
- Beach days on Greek islands
You’ll find water parks, mini-golf courses, and movie nights under the stars onboard. Some cruise lines offer unique teen-only spaces and activities, ensuring that older kids have their own fun.
Look for ships with family suites or connecting rooms to make your accommodations more comfortable. Many cruises also offer babysitting services, allowing parents to enjoy adult-only areas or evening entertainment.
Cruise Line Comparison: Ship Size and Atmosphere
When choosing a Mediterranean cruise, the size of the ship and its atmosphere play significant roles in shaping your experience. These factors influence everything from onboard activities to port accessibility.
Mega Ships vs. Smaller Vessels
Larger cruise ships offer a wide range of amenities and entertainment, including multiple restaurants, Broadway-style shows, and expansive pool decks. These mega-ships can accommodate thousands of passengers, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.
In contrast, smaller vessels provide:
- A more intimate experience.
- Accessing ports that large ships can’t reach.
- Allowing for exploration of less-visited Mediterranean destinations.
You’ll also enjoy personalized service and a quieter ambiance onboard.
Consider your preferences:
- Do you want a floating resort with endless activities?
- Or do you prefer a cozier setting focused on destinations?
Large ships from Royal Caribbean and MSC are known for their extensive activities and amenities. Royal Caribbean’s mega-ships feature attractions such as water parks, rock climbing walls, and a variety of dining options, creating a lively environment. MSC, focusing on family-friendly experiences, offers extensive children’s programs and entertainment, making it ideal for families. However, jumbo vessels are not for everyone. Some people can feel crowded, and navigating them may be more challenging.
Smaller ships from lines like Seabourn and Windstar offer a more intimate experience. Seabourn is known for its luxury and personalized service, with high staff-to-guest ratios that create a relaxed and exclusive environment. Windstar focuses on unique itineraries and ports that larger ships can’t access, providing a more adventurous and immersive experience. However, smaller ships may not offer the extensive facilities and dining options found on larger vessels. Some folks may find them claustrophobic, and they may not welcome kids.
For instance, Seabourn and Windstar Cruises are primarily designed for adults. While both cruise lines permit kids to sail, neither offers youth-focused activities or facilities.
Onboard Atmosphere
The atmosphere of a cruise ship can vary significantly between cruise lines and even between individual ships within a line. Some Mediterranean cruise lines cater to families with kid-friendly activities and a lively vibe. In contrast, others focus on luxury and relaxation with elegant dining and sophisticated entertainment.
When selecting your cruise, consider:
- Your ideal pace: action-packed or laid-back?
- Preferred dress code: formal or casual?
- Dining style: set times or flexible options?
The ship’s atmosphere can significantly impact your enjoyment, so choosing a line that aligns with your vacation style is key to the best Mediterranean experience.
For a formal setting, lines like Cunard and Celebrity are excellent choices. Cunard is known for its refined ambiance, requiring formal attire for certain events, creating a classic cruise experience. Celebrity offers a sophisticated environment with high-end dining and stylish decor, though it’s slightly less formal than Cunard.
Norwegian and Royal Caribbean are good options if you prefer a more relaxed vibe. Norwegian’s freestyle cruising concept eliminates fixed dining times and strict dress codes, offering flexibility and laid-back luxury. While large and bustling, Royal Caribbean maintains a casual atmosphere on its newer ships, with casual dining and diverse entertainment.
Keep in mind that the atmosphere can vary within a cruise line; for example, a short Mediterranean cruise on the same ship may feel more casual than a longer one.
Shore Excursion Options
Mediterranean cruises offer a wealth of excursion choices to enhance your voyage. From guided tours to independent adventures, you’ll find options to suit every interest and travel style.
Curated Shore Excursions
Cruise lines offer expertly designed tours that showcase the best of each port, with knowledgeable local guides bringing history and culture to life. Popular options include:
- Ancient ruins tours in Athens or Rome
- Wine tasting in Tuscany or Provence
- Scenic coastal drives along the French Riviera
These excursions often feature skip-the-line access to top attractions and arranged transportation, allowing you to relax and focus on the experience. While they may cost more than independent exploration, the convenience and expertise can make them worth the price.
Cruise lines like Viking and Azamara specialize in small-group tours that provide an in-depth look at local culture and history. These tours typically include:
- Expert, multilingual guides
- Priority access to popular sites
- Convenient transportation to and from the ship
Whether hiking through ancient ruins, sipping wine at a family-owned vineyard, or touring world-class museums, everything is planned for you, ensuring a stress-free and enriching experience.
Family and Group Excursions
Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises offer excursions tailored for families or large groups. These are designed to be fun and engaging for all ages. Experience a 3D virtual tour of the Acropolis, perfect for kids and adults alike.
These outings often include beach days, wildlife encounters, or interactive museum visits. The pace is relaxed, ensuring everyone from toddlers to grandparents enjoys the day out.
Independent Exploration
If you prefer to chart your own course, many Mediterranean cruise itineraries allow for plenty of independent exploration. This gives you the freedom to:
- Set your own pace
- Visit off-the-beaten-path spots
- Save money by avoiding organized tour fees
You can rent a car, take public transportation, or simply explore the port town on foot. Just plan ahead and know when you must return to the ship. Popular activities for independent travelers include beach days, shopping in local markets, and discovering hidden gems in charming neighborhoods.
For those who favor independent excursions , the choice of cruise line still matters. Factors like time in port, port access, onboard resources, and disembarkation efficiency all affect the ease and success of independent adventures.
- Port Schedule and Time in Port : Premium or luxury lines often spend more time in port, giving you greater flexibility for independent exploration.
- Port Accessibility : Smaller or luxury lines, like Seabourn or Windstar, access less-visited ports, offering more opportunities to explore unique destinations independently. Larger ships may dock farther from city centers or use tenders, limiting flexibility.
- Disembarkation Process : Larger ships often have slower disembarkation processes, while smaller ships allow for quicker, smoother exits, maximizing your time in port.
- Itinerary and Destination Focus : Some lines prioritize cultural immersion and historically rich ports, making them ideal for independent travelers looking for richer experiences.
Pricing and Inclusions
When planning a Mediterranean cruise, you must understand what you get for your money. Some cruise lines offer luxurious all-inclusive packages, while others have lower upfront costs but charge extra for various amenities.
All-Inclusive Luxury
Luxury cruise lines often offer all-inclusive packages that cover most onboard expenses. Your fare typically includes:
- Gourmet dining at all restaurants
- Premium drinks and fine wines
- Gratuities for staff
- Wi-Fi access
- Some shore excursions
These cruises tend to be pricier upfront but can provide excellent value. You’ll enjoy a hassle-free experience without worrying about extra costs. Some luxury lines even throw in airfare and hotel stays before or after your cruise.
Once you’re on board, you won’t have to worry about surprises on your final cruise bill. This can make budgeting easier and let you relax fully.
Extra Costs on Mainstream Lines
Mainstream lines like MSC Cruises and Norwegian offer lower starting prices. But be ready for extra charges:
- Specialty dining: $20-$50 per person
- Drink packages: $50-$100 per day
- Shore excursions: $50-$200+ each
- Gratuities: $14-$20 per person per day
These can add up quickly. A family of four might spend an extra $1000 or more on a week-long cruise.
To save money, look for deals that include some extras. Drink packages or onboard credit can help cut costs. You can also plan independent shore activities to avoid pricey excursions.
Choosing the Right Cruise Line for Your Needs
Finding the perfect cruise line can make all the difference in your Mediterranean adventure. Choose a cruise that matches your experience level and preferences to ensure you have the best time possible.
First-Time Cruisers
If you’re new to cruising, look for lines that cater to beginners. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line offer excellent options for first-timers. These companies provide:
- A wide range of activities
- Diverse dining options
- Helpful staff to guide you
Consider shorter itineraries to test the waters. A 7-day Western Mediterranean cruise could be ideal. You’ll visit popular ports like Barcelona, Rome, and Naples.
Remember to check out onboard amenities. Look for ships with:
- Multiple pools
- Fitness centers
- Entertainment venues
These features ensure you’ll have plenty to do between ports.
Experienced Cruisers
You might seek a fresh and more upscale experience as a seasoned cruiser. Luxury lines like Silversea , Seabourn , Regent Seven Seas , and Oceania Cruises offer luxurious amenities such as butler service, gourmet dining, and all-inclusive packages. These smaller ships also access unique, off-the-beaten-path ports, providing more authentic local experiences in less touristy spots.
For something different, consider itineraries with overnight stays in ports like Venice or Barcelona, which will give you extra time to explore. Azamara and Windstar specialize in these, and more traditional lines like Celebrity have also increased sailings with overnight stops.
If you prefer a more relaxed pace, look for itineraries with consecutive sea days , which may allow you to take a side trip in one port and rejoin the ship at a later port. This is a great way to explore more deeply without the rush.
For those with specific interests, themed cruises can add a new dimension to your trip. Think wine tastings, cooking classes, or history tours. Viking Ocean Cruises , for example, focuses on cultural experiences on and off the ship. At the same time, other lines offer wellness or culinary voyages that provide immersive, specialized experiences.
For genuinely unique adventures, seek out cruises that visit less-touristy ports and offer exclusive excursions, such as smaller towns in Turkey or Greece that aren’t on the main routes. Enrichment programs, wine tastings, and culinary classes onboard can further enhance your journey and deepen your cultural immersion.
Whether you opt for longer itineraries that explore both the Western and Eastern Mediterranean or a specialized themed cruise, choosing the right line and itinerary will set the stage for an unforgettable Mediterranean journey.
Closing Thoughts
When choosing the right Mediterranean cruise line, it’s essential to think about what matters most to you—whether it’s ship size, onboard amenities, or unique itinerary options. Reviews from other cruisers can provide valuable insights, helping you find the perfect match for your budget, level of luxury, and preferred activities. Some lines focus on immersive cultural experiences, while others prioritize relaxation, adventure, or family-friendly fun.
No matter your preferences, a Mediterranean cruise promises an unforgettable journey filled with diverse experiences. Every moment offers something new, from ancient ruins and stunning coastlines to rich cultural excursions and relaxing sea days. So, pack your bags, choose the cruise line that suits your style, and prepare for a fulfilling Mediterranean adventure.

Reuniting at sea: silversea announces new venetian society reunion voyage for 2025.
Guests select Venetian Society Reunion voyage itinerary for the first time to sail with Silversea President Bert Hernandez aboard Silver Spirit in the Mediterranean in 2025.
(MIAMI – September 19, 2024) Crafted to reconnect its community of like-minded travelers,Silversea has announced its 2025 Venetian Society Reunion voyage. For the first time, Venetian Society members were invited to vote for their preferred itinerary. The leading experiential luxury and expedition cruise travel brand will reconvene its extended family of guests on board Silver Spirit from October 17 to October 29, 2025, welcoming both Venetian Society members and first-time guests between Fusina (Venice) and Athens (Piraeus) .
Hosted by Bert Hernandez, president of Silversea, the Venetian Society Reunion voyages foster a convivial atmosphere and a strong sense of camaraderie, providing the opportunity for guests to reunite with friends and meet fellow travelers while enjoying exclusive destination experiences. Throughout the sailing, guests enjoy special onboard events and receptions, enriched entertainment, and curated shore excursions. In addition, Venetian Society members can attend an exclusive signature event ashore, which, curated by Silversea’s destination experts, provides unique insight into the local culture, customs, and history of a destination; a 5% saving on the cruise fare; and commemorative gifts, among other enrichments.
“I look forward to hosting our Venetian Society Reunion voyage in the Mediterranean in 2025 — on an itinerary that was personally selected by our guests,” said Bert Hernandez, president, Silversea. “Our reunion voyages provide important opportunities to reunite our Venetian Society members each year, enabling our executive teams - both shoreside and shipboard - to meet with our valued guests and celebrate their loyalty. In 2025, we will visit some of the most iconic destinations in the Mediterranean, including Venice, Dubrovnik, Santorini, and Rhodes — traveling in the shoulder season for an authentic experience, as we connect with locals. Our destination experts have designed a range of unique moments for our guests, going to unprecedented lengths to ensure a truly unforgettable voyage.”
VENETIAN SOCIETY REUNION VOYAGE 2025: FUSINA (VENICE) TO ATHENS (PIRAEUS)
Departing from the new cruise terminal in Fusina (Venice), this special sailing will call in many of the Mediterranean’s most iconic destinations. Guests traveling on board Silver Spirit will first discover Trieste near the Slovenian border, where they will have the opportunity to explore Piazza Unità d'Italia, one of Italy’s most spectacular town squares, and marvel at some of the country’s most striking architecture.
In Croatia’s Medieval capital, Dubrovnik, guests will delve into the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; admire fine Renaissance paintings at the Dominican Monastery; and take in the historic beauty of the Rector's Palace, Maritime Museum, Church of Saint Blaise, and Onofrio's Fountain. Venturing out of town, they can sample local wine at a family winery in the Konavle Valley or discover the many highlights of beautiful Cavtat.
A scenic drive and an old town walking tour will unlock the charm of Italy’s Bari, while excursions to the cathedral-like marine caves of Polignano a Mare and the UNESCO-listed Sassi di Matera showcase the region’s impressive natural beauty and fascinating cultural history.
An immersion into the Greek islands will combine both iconic and off-the-beaten-path highlights in Corfu, Katakolon (Olympia), Monemvasia (Laconia), Souda Bay (Crete), Santorini with its whitewashed houses carved into rugged clifftops, and the Medieval City of Rhodes, before guests arrive in Athens (Piraeus) on October 29, 2025.
VENETIAN SOCIETY REUNION VOYAGE 2024: TOKYO TO SINGAPORE
Travelers looking to sail sooner can still book to join Silversea’s 2024 Venetian Society Reunion voyage, which will see guests sail from Tokyo to Singapore on board the new Silver Nova –between October 15 and October 31, 2024. This year’s edition, which will be Bert Hernandez’s first Venetian Society Reunion voyage as president of Silversea, also marks the first time a Nova-class ship has hosted the sailing. Three overnight calls – in Incheon (Seoul), Hong Kong, and Ho Chi Minh City – will enable guests to travel deeper into some of Asia’s most iconic cities.
“On our 2024 Venetian Society Reunion in Asia, our guests will attend a tailored event at the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival at the Central Harbourfront with VIP access, enjoying exclusive enrichments that will include award-winning Chinese wines, Michelin-starred dim sum, and special local entertainment,” added Hernandez. “Guests can subsequently discover the festival’s attractions and booths, sampling a variety of local and international cuisine, and enjoy privileged access to the Harbourview Lounge.”
