Below Deck Mediterranean cast: Meet the Season 2 crew, aboard the Sirocco

The Below Deck Season 2 cast, making up the crew of the Sirocco

Below Deck Mediterranean is back for a second sailing! And there’s some big changes for Season 2 — with seven new cast members joining the nine-person crew.

There’s also a whole new superyacht, the 154ft Sirocco, after we exclusively told how last year’s boat the Ionian Princess was put up for sale .

The only remaining castmates from the show’s initial run are Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier and deckhand Bobby Giancola.

Without further ado, let’s meet the Season 2 crew…

Sandy Yawn, Captain

Sandy on Below Deck Mediterranean

Sandy has more than 27 years on boats under her belt, and has worked across the globe.

She is one of just a few female captains in the industry — and is a tough cookie, having survived everything from cancer to being chased by pirates.

You can check her out and keep up with her latest goings-on on her Twitter .

Adam Glick, Chef

Adam on on Below Deck Mediterranean

When not on boats, Adam is a free spirit, living in a van and surfing whenever he can.

He has been working on yachts for the past decade but hopes to one day open a chain of taco stands — by the beach, obviously.

He regularly posts pics of him at work and play on his Instagram , and you can also keep up with him on Twitter .

Hannah Ferrier, Chief Stew

Hannah on Below Deck Mediterranean

Ozzie Hannah returns from Season 1, but it’s actually her seventh season as a Chief Stew in the industry.

She’s all for working hard and likes to keep her boat to the highest standards, but also likes to let her hair down. She says she wants to have a “softer approach” to managing the crew this season.

You can she’s what she’s been getting up to lately and check out pics of her on her Instagram . She’s also on Twitter and Facebook .

Christine “Bugsy” Drake, Second Stew

Bugsy on Below Deck Mediterranean

Bugsy is from South Africa and used to work as a chief stew, but has spent some time off boats to try and give herself some TLC, and said before the season started that she was more than happy to be second stew on the Sirocco as it means less pressure.

Find out more about her and see some of her pics on her Instagram .

Lauren Cohen, Third Stew

Lauren on Below Deck Mediterranean

Lauren hasn’t always lived the Below Deck life, and used to work as a cheerleader in the NFL before spending a year working in the Hamptons.

She’s a glass half full kind of person, and likes to keep people entertained.

She’s pretty active on Twitter , and you can also see her latest photos on Instagram .

Bobby Giancola, Deckhand

Bobby on Below Deck Mediterranean

Bobby, the second returnee from Season 1, and a memorable one at that — after his crush on fellow crew member Julia became a main part of the storyline.

He also had a memorable clash with Danny after he called him Bryan’s “butt buddy” .

He’s still looking for the love of his life, but says he’ll be much more focused on work this season.

Bobby’s big on the socials having already been on the show once already. Check him out on his Insta , Twitter and Facebook .

Wesley Walton, Bosun

Wesley on Below Deck Mediterranean

Wesley is a bit of a brain-box, with a degree in economics and environmental.

He’s always been a high-flier, and not just in class, but in everything from sports to chess.

He grew up in South Africa, and became bosun when he was just 25.

He’s on Instagram — although his account was set to private at the time of writing —  as well as Facebook .

Malia White, Deckhand

Malia on Below Deck Mediterranean

As Captain Sandy being the exception shows, yachting is a male-dominated industry.

So there’s no better way to prepare for it than to have five older brothers, like Malia did growing up.

She’s also just 5ft tall, so has had to learn how to stand up for herself in other ways.

She’s new to the yachting scene, but is a certified dive master so is used to working on boats.

She’s single, but says she’s not in a rush to find a long-term partner anytime soon.

Check her out on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter .

Max Hagley, Deckhand

Max on Below Deck Mediterranean

Brit Max is a big party-goer, and enjoyed a stint as a bartender in European party capital Ibiza.

He’s always cracking the jokes, and while he’s never worked on a superyacht before, he’s a big believer in faking it till you make it.

You can find him on Facebook .

Below Deck Mediterranean airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Bravo.

Meet The Cast of Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4

below deck mediterranean season 4 cast

Back for another round of thrills and spills on the high seas is Below Deck Mediterranean – and it’s already shaping up to be a stellar season. The spinoff from Bravo’s Below Deck first broadcast on May 3, 2016. Since then, it’s followed the crew and guests of the 150′ mega-yacht, Sirocco, as it charters new reality TV show territory around the Mediterranean. In season 1, we followed the yacht’s progress around the islands of Greece. Season 2 saw the yacht hit Croatia, while season 3 took the action to Italy. Season 4 sees Captain Sandy Yawn and the rest of the Sirocco’s crew head to France. The waters may be calm, but the onboard activities are anything but… find out more with our who’s who guide to the cast of Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4.

Sandy Yawn – Captain

Back at the helm for another season is Captain Sandy Yawn. As one of the few women in the yachting industry to have achieved the rank of Captain, Sandy has all the grit, determination and stamina needed to steer the ship’s crew as they navigate the balmy waters of the Mediterranean (and the slightly choppier ones of reality TV). Having faced- down cancer and overcome a potentially career (and life) ending motorcycle accident, Sandy is not someone you can dismiss lightly (as the crew knows only too well… woe betide anyone who’s late to their shift, shoddily groomed, or who fails to deliver her “seven-star service”). She might be a tough cookie, but Sandy is also well respected by both her peers and her subordinates.

Hannah Ferrier – Chief Stewardess

Rejoining the crew for another season of fun and frolics is Chief Stewardess, Hannah Ferrier. The Australian native is now in her ninth year as Chief Stew… but she’s hoping this year will be an easier year than last. With the anxieties of season 3 dead and buried, and with her focus now firmly on getting ahead in her career rather than in love, Hannah is looking forward to finding out what new guests (and adventures) await her in season 4.

Joao Franco – Bosun

Ship bosun Joao Fraco is back for another season, ready to show Captain Sandy he’s learned from his past mistakes and is willing to prove himself the ship’s best bosun yet. Zimbabwean Fraco came to the US in a desire to find a better life for himself away from the political and economic turmoil of his birth country. After finding work as a “Man Friday” to a boat captain, he swiftly rose up the ranks, culminating in his present position on the Sirocco. As his Bravo profile notes , while Fraco has the makings of a first-class shipmate, his turbulent personal life has sometimes been his downfall. Whether he truly has learned to put his private life to one side and keep his focus firmly on the job, only time will tell.

Colin Macy-O’Toole – Deckhand

Ready for a new season on the high seas is returning deckhand, 31-year-old Colin Macy-O’Toole. O’Toole started his love affair with ships when he was just 15 years old, after landing his first paying job as a deckhand. Away from the ship, New Yorker O’Toole has a passion for music, having studied it to degree level in his younger days. The self-confessed momma’s boy may miss his family and Long Island home when he’s aboard the Sirocco, but his adventurous spirit and love of the ocean keep him coming back for more…something which should keep female viewers happy, judging from some of the messages O’Toole receives on social media: “I get a lot of moms who direct message me on social media,” he’s shared . “They always say, ‘I never do this, don’t tell my daughter.’”

Mila Kolomeitseva – Chef (ep 1-4)

As the first female chef on board the Sirocco, Mila Kolomeitseva has a lot to prove, but with her background in cooking (she studied at Paris’ renowned Le Cordon Bleu cooking school, and has worked extensively as a private chef), she’s confident her Mediterranean style cuisine will have the ship’s guests coming back for more. Her fiery temper may have her crewmates quaking in their boots occasionally, but it will certainly be keeping us entertained. Or would have, that is… in a shocking twist in episode 4, Mila was summarily dismissed after a series of mistakes left Captain Sandy with no choice but to give the Serbian chef her marching orders.

Aesha Scott – 2nd Stewardess

2nd stewardess Aesha Scott’s childhood in a small town in New Zealand may not have given her much opportunity to taste life on the ocean, but it certainly gave her a love of adventure. Growing up around four brothers, Aesha was encouraged to be loud, fun, and full of attitude — something that’s served her well since she joined the yachting industry. Her progression up the ranks has taken her from deckhand to 2nd stewardess, and she’s determined to go all the way to the top. Not that that stops her enjoying herself in the meantime — whether she’s exploring new destinations, enjoying a frosty beverage with her friends, or flirting up a storm with one or two of the crew’s most eligible bachelors, you can rely on Aesha to bring the fun.

Anastasia Surmava – 3rd Stewardess (ep 1-5), chef (ep 6)

Georgian born Anastasia Surmava joined the crew of the Sirocco as 3rd stewardess, but in a shocking twist, was promoted to chef after Mila Kolomeitseva was served her marching orders after a slew of mistakes. The promotion, while unexpected, was a revolutionary experience for Surmava, and it’s fair to say it’s changed the direction of her career for good. Since the filming of Below Deck ended, Surmava has taken over as executive chef and creative director of Ajna, a Sri-Lanka based eco café and yoga studio, and is determined to take her new career as far as possible.

Travis Michalzik – Lead Deckhand

Lead deckhand Travis Michalzik has been pursing adventure and high times ever since leaving high school. After spending several years taking whatever job he could get his hands on, the Australian landed a gig as a deckhand on a yacht- 8 years later, and while the yacht may have changed, Michalzik’s hard-working, hard-partying work ethic remains the same.

Jack Stirrup – Deckhand

The final crew member to complete this season’s lineup is deckhand Jack Stirrup, a fun-loving, free-spirited Brit born and bred in Liverpool. After spending several years in the Merchant Navy as an engineer, Stirrup is ready to demonstrate just how far a strong work ethic, scrupulous standards, and a crazy mob of wild curls can take you.

sirocco yacht below deck mediterranean

Part of the wonder of watching Below Deck: Mediterranean is witnessing what it might actually be like to set sail to Monaco or Mykonos on a luxury yacht. While watching Below Deck: Mediterranean only costs a cable subscription, the cost of a yacht rental is far more and the cost of actually owning a yacht is astronomical. Anyone who watches Season 2 of this Bravo reality show and wants to purchase the Sirocco for themselves better have a hefty wallet and consider the cost of the Sirocco yacht .

While the Sirocco can be chartered for anywhere from $192,000 to $213,500 according to Yacht Charter Fleet, anyone hoping to own this fine vessel should be willing to put down a whopping 17 million euros, or approximately $18,525,750, according to The Yacht Company . This whopping asking price not only makes it out of most people's price range, it also defines it as the Below Deck franchise's most expensive yacht yet .

There's no shortage of luxury and financial comfort on the Below Deck franchise, but featuring the Sirocco shows that the series is getting access to bigger and better yachts as its popularity grows. When it comes to value, Sirocco splashes past Below Deck yachts out of the water.

Yacht Charter Fleet reports that the yachts from the first three seasons of Below Deck — the Honor, the Ohana, and the Eros — were sold for $15 million, $10.9 million, and $17.9 million respectively. The Honor and the Ohana were each sold after their seasons of Below Deck , while the Eros was actually sold just before the show started filming. The franchise' most recent yacht, Below Deck Season 4's Valor, was priced at just around $12 million .

While the main franchise only has one yacht that comes close to the price of the Sirocco, the Season 1 Below Deck: Mediterranean ship, Ionian Princess, was listed at $17,750,000 as of November 2015 by Worth Avenue Yachts. Perhaps the Mediterranean is home to more luxurious megayachts designed to explore the European countryside, or it could be that once Below Deck managed to feature two yachts that went on to sell for eight-figure amounts, yacht owners started allowing their more expensive and luxurious yachts to be featured on the show for a possible sales bump.

It may seem like a great deal of money, but that massive $18,525,750 price tag attached to the Sirocco isn't without reason. Yacht Charter Fleet lists among the Sirocco's features , six rooms for 12 guests including a master suite, an on-deck jacuzzi, an on-boat gym, air conditioning, wifi, and a multi-media center outfitted with a movie theater along with a nine-person staff to help clean and cook for you while on the Yacht. All of that spread out over 154.20 feet would make for a luxurious building, but now imagine putting all of that on a boat and the $18.5 million price starts to sound a whole lot more reasonable (for millionaires that is). The Sirocco certainly isn't cheap by any metrics, but there's no denying that you get what you pay for.

By Editorial Team   18 April 2019

It has been revealed that Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4 has been filmed around the glittering cruising grounds of the South of France , with the 47m/154ft superyacht SIROCCO playing host to the season 4 crew and guests.

Hitting our screens on June 3, Below Deck Mediterranean is making its triumphant return for season 4, and this time we can expect Captain Sandy Yawn and her crew to be exploring the billionaire’s playground of the French Riviera .

The home port for season 4 has been identified as Vieux Port Golfe Juane, which sits in between the glitzy yachting marina of Antibes and Cannes. This prime situation means there will be a number of excellent locations on the itinerary for season 4; take a look at a South of France yacht charter itinerary for more information.

Which yacht will be starring in Season 4 of Below Deck Mediterranean?

Superyacht SIROCCO will be starring in season 4 of Below Deck Mediterranean. She is a returning favourite of the show, having starred in season 2, when the crew headed to Croatia. The Heesen-built motor yacht has a variety of alluring features, including an 8-person jacuzzi, exotic interiors and a multimedia entertainment room.

If you'd like to view a complete run-down of Below Deck yachts, their real names and how much it costs to rent them , you can head over to our article. We even have the scoop on the brand new series 'Below Deck Sailing Vessel '.

Which crew members are starring in Below Deck Mediterranean season 4?

As well as a returning superyacht, season 4 of Below Deck Mediterranean will also see plenty of familiar faces in the crew. An original fixture since season one, Chief Stewardess Hannah Ferrier will be back again to head up the interior crew, under the guidance of Captain Sandy Yawn at the helm. Below her, Colin Macy-O’Toole and freshly-promoted bosun Joao Franco will be striving to ensure smooth sailing.

Two new deckhands will be joining them; Travis Michalzik and Jack Stirrup are making their television debuts on the show, and Bravo TV has hinted that both of them could be at the centre of drama during season 4.

Adding to the interior crew, Hannah will be joined by experienced second stew Aesha Scott and third stew Anastasia Surmava. The three seemed to enjoy a budding friendship, over the course of filming, with Scott posting a picture of them laughing under the sun in Antibes.

Marking a first for the Below Deck franchise, Mila Kolomeitseva will be the first female chef in Below Deck’s history. The experienced chef boasts Cordon Bleau training from Paris, so she should be right at home in the French Riviera setting; but she has her work cut out for her after suffering from a bout of food poisoning before the first charter.

View this post on Instagram Filming this show was easily the most fun thing I’ve ever done!! SO excited for that first episode to air and laugh as everyone rips the shit out of me. I’d say these two probably managed everything a bit more gracefully than I did 😂 A post shared by Aesha Jean (@aesha_jean) on Apr 16, 2019 at 7:18pm PDT

Could Chef Ben be back?

Social media was sent into a frenzy when a picture was posted showing Chef Ben Robinson hanging out with the crew of Below Deck Mediterranean season 4 in a restaurant in Nice. While the Below Deck yachties have been known to meet up during filming, fans were quick to point out that Chef Mila did not appear to be present at the table. This would not be the first time Ben has swooped in mid-way through a charter season to help out- after Chef Leon was sent packing in Below Deck season 3, it was Ben who stepped in to save the day.

If you're counting down the days until the original Below Deck is back, check out our article, which tells you the destination and the yacht which will feature in Below Deck season 7 .

Where was Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4 filmed?

Below Deck Mediterranean season 4 was filmed around the South of France’s Cote d’Azur. As mentioned above, the home port has been identified as Vieux Port Golfe Juane, which is located in close proximity to the buzzing bars and nightclubs of Antibes. The yachties will have plenty of opportunities to let loose at the end of every charter.

On the shores of Antibes, the crew can expect to find picturesque squares filled with lively cafes, boutique shops and authentic ice-cream parlours. Off the coast, the waters of Antibes are crystal-clear, creating the perfect opportunity to drop anchor and enjoy some watersports.

The historic city of Cannes, home to the iconic Cannes Film Festival, will be one of the destinations on the yacht’s itinerary. As well as some great beaches, the romantic city is also home to cobbled streets, ornate Belle Epoque architecture and fantastic waterfront restaurants.

One of the most iconic destinations in the South of France, St Tropez is a superyacht playground. The once-humble fishing village is now a happening hotspot, with a vibrant shopping scene, relaxing beach clubs and wild entertainment line-up in the evenings.

The land of luxury and a certified superyacht hub, Monaco is awash with glitz and glamour. When the F1 Monaco Grand Prix comes to town, the pint-sized principality is transformed into a hive of celebrities and F1 legends.  The region is equally alluring at other times of the year, with plenty of designer fashion houses, world-class restaurants and the casino of Monte-Carlo to keep guests happy.

Ile Saint Marguerite

Set adrift from the mainland, Ile Saint Marguerite is a lovely little island covered in pine forests, with plenty of charming beaches located here and on the neighbouring Ile St Honorat. Guests exploring this island chain, known as Les Lerins, can expect to see the legendary cell of the 'Man with the Iron Mask' or dine at an ancient monastery, where the monks make their own honey, wine and lavender oil.

Nice and the surrounding coastlines offer up some of the most blissful beaches in the region, all of which are backed by palm trees swaying in the mind. The beautiful city is brimming with examples of classic French architecture, with warm stone houses, elaborate fountains and plenty of bars and nightclubs.

Calanque de Saint Barthelemy

This beautiful, secluded beach can almost exclusively only be accessed by boat and superyachts who know about this secret hideaway can drop anchor off the coast and let their charter guests take a tender in. It’s an excellent site for a beach picnic, thanks to the wide expanse of beach lapped by crystalline water.

Sirocco Yacht: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

Usually a yacht gets famous because the owner is famous and in those cases it’s typically a celebrity or maybe a well-known billionaire. That’s why we know about Amazon founder Jeff Bezo’s yacht or former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal . But there are occasions when luxury yachts become well known for other reasons and that’s the case with the yacht called Sirocco. This one got famous on the reality show Below Deck, much like My Seanna , and has been seen by countless people on television for years as a result.

Let’s take a look at the ins and outs of the Sirocco, including what it would cost you to get on board for a week.

Who Owns the Sirocco Yacht?

Sirocco was launched in 2006 and built by Heesen. In 2013 the yacht was sold by former owners, the brokerage Cecil Wright and Partners. At that time it had an asking price of €21.5 million. The rumor is that a European millionaire ended up purchasing the yacht and kept it in waters around Europe thereafter, which does jibe with the vessel’s appearance on Below Deck.

Initially, Sirocco was seen in the waters around Croatia and then it appeared on Below Deck later in Mediterranean waters. It received upgrading in 2013 and the most recent refit on record was in 2015.

Who Is the Captain of the Sirocco Yacht?

On the second season of the show Below Deck Mediterranean, Sandy Yawn was the captain of the Sirocco. She returned for season 4 on the Sirocco as well, back in 2019.

How Much Did the Sirocco Yacht Cost?

sirocco yacht below deck mediterranean

As we said, the asking price for the Sirocco in 2013, when the yacht was 7 years old, was reported to be €21.5 million. That works out to about $23.3 million today. That said, the Sirocco is a decade older these days and the current price has been estimated to be around $20 million. However, the yacht has not been listed for sale anywhere in specific as it still seems to be making the owners money as a charter vessel, in part because of its fame from the Below Deck series. For that reason, the Sirocco yacht price is just an estimate based on similar yachts.

Is the Sirocco Available for Yacht Charters? What Does it Cost Per Week?

sirocco yacht below deck mediterranean

Currently, you can charter the Sirocco for about $196,000 US per week. That price is consistent regardless of season so there’s no better time of year to try to secure it. That said, because of its high profile the availability of the Sirocco for yacht charter may be limited, part of the reason there’s no seasonal discount on pricing as there is with many other yachts.

How Big is the Sirocco Yacht?

Sirocco falls firmly in the realm of being a superyacht and measures in at a stunning 154 feet in length and features three decks. The beam is 28 feet and some features, such as the master suite, are full beam spaces.

How Fast is the Sirocco Yacht?

sirocco yacht below deck mediterranean

Powered by a pair of MTU engines, the Sirocco has a top speed of 22 knots with a cruising speed of 12 knots. It also features an advanced stabilization system which allows for less movement on deck, part of the reason it was such an ideal choice for the Below Deck show to film.

What’s the Luxury Motor Yacht Sirocco Interior Like?

sirocco yacht below deck mediterranean

As large as it is, the Sirocco is built to handle 12 guests plus an additional 9 crew members. The interior was designed by a company called Omega Architects with the specific goal of making something incredibly luxurious and extravagant. This is a charter yacht featured on a TV show, after all.

Accommodations are spread across one master suite with a king bed, a VIP cabin with a queen bed, two double cabins that also have queens and then two twin cabins. The master suite, located on the upper deck, even features a marble tub with mosaic tiles and a private terrace for 180 degree viewing of the ocean undisturbed.

The on board amenities are the sorts of things you’d expect on a luxury superyacht that make it seem more like a resort on the water than simply a boat. Guests can relax in the on-deck jacuzzi tub or get in a workout in a fully professional and well-equipped on-board gym.

sirocco yacht below deck mediterranean

For more relaxation there’s an on board movie theater as well as a spacious al fresco dining area. There’s a sun pad on deck for those who really want to relax and just lay out to get a tan. The top deck is an ideal space that can be used for parties and also buffet style meals.

Interior design elements are meant to bring about an Asian and, in particular, Indonesian feeling. Wood and leather accents can be found throughout in neutral and natural tones. Other elements that are frequently found throughout include glass, as a number of glass table tops are scattered across the vessel and marble as well, including a marble bar top. Finally, there are gold accents through as well, such as in the his and hers sinks in the master ensuite bathroom.

sirocco yacht below deck mediterranean

In terms of toys and extras, the Sirocco delivers in full. Those on board have access first to a 20 foot, 60 hp Castoldi tender boat as well as a smaller 18 foot tender and a 13 foot Zodiac rescue boat.

Other toys on board include a SeaDoo Waverunner, jet ski, sea kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, wakeboards, water skis, towable tubes and inflatables, a giant slide, various other floating mats and tubes, seabobs, flyjet board, and more. There’s also equipment for snorkeling as well as scuba diving which includes a Bauer dive compressor.

The entertainment facilities include things like high speed wi-fi throughout, along with upgraded 4G communications, ample televisions, stereo surround sound in the cabins and more. Beach games, board games and even things like a minisub can be requested and added onto charter rates.

Crew can vary depending on charter but past crew has had room for an on board masseuse as well as Michelin-starred chefs.

The Bottom Line

The Sirocco yacht has been featured on the TV show Below Deck in two different Mediterranean seasons. At 154 feet, it’s a superyacht and though it was built in 2006, it has been refit and upgraded to keep it modern and luxurious.

The initial price of the yacht was thought to be somewhere around $20 million. These days it’s available as a charter for about $196,000 US per week. It features numerous amenities and room for 12 guests.

The Below Deck franchise would not be complete without the many captains that have steered the mega yachts across both the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Some captains have been more memorable than others, including Below Deck's very first captain, Captain Lee, who starred in 10 seasons of the show and was known for his no-nonsense approach when it came to yachting .

In Season 2 of Below Deck Mediterranean , the franchise saw its first woman captain—Captain Sandy Yawn—taking the helm of the Sirocco. Since then, she has starred in every season, and fans have gotten to know Sandy for more than just her hands-on approach and nurturing relationship with her yacht crew. In Season 9, which sees fan-favorite Aesha Scott as chief stew, Captain Sandy opens up about her private life and shares her plans to propose to her girlfriend, Leah Shafer.

Captain Sandy and Leah have a beautiful love story, and who would have guessed that Leah made the first move after being a huge fan of the show.

Below Deck Med's Aesha Scott Reveals Which Yacht Guests She Can't Stand

Below Deck's Aesha Scott is known for her friendly personality, but even this chief stew has a tough time loving these types of charter guests.

This Is The Sweet Way Leah Shafer Made The First Move

Below Deck's Captain Sandy Yawn looking concerned

Captain Sandy has become a household name as she starred in Seasons 2-9 of Below Deck Med . She became reality TV's first female captain and has become known for her tough love personality. In fact, it took viewers a few seasons of watching Captain Sandy to have her grow on them. Fans will remember in Season 5 when Captain Sandy made the decision to fire chief stew Hannah Ferrier for having "drugs" on board, despite Hannah having a prescription. Fans rallied around Hannah and Captain Sandy's likability was tarnished.

Hannah and Captain Sandy have since made amends and fans have changed their minds about Below Deck Med's captain as they watch her season after season. In the show's most recent Season 9, viewers watch as she's given 3rd stewardess Bri Muller multiple chances to redeem herself in her position, proving that she really cares about her crew.

In addition, Captain Sandy has typically stayed quiet about her personal life, but has opened up way more and has become more relatable as she's given viewers an inside look into her relationship with her now wife, Leah Shafer.

Captain Sandy and Leah smiling

Fans have learned a lot more about Captain Sandy's love life, including how she and Leah first met. The two were not set up by friends or had even known one another previously. Surprisingly, Leah happened to be a fan of the Bravo franchise and simply reached out to Captain Sandy to wish her well.

In an interview with ShowBiz Cheat Sheet , Captain Sandy shared how she and Leah first connected . Leah reached out to Captain Sandy through Facebook Messenger. In a private message, Leah, a gospel singer, wrote:

"I came across your show, congratulations, many blessings."

While the private message was so simple, Captain Sandy shared that the "many blessings" part really made an impact on her. Although the captain does not discuss her religion on the show, she maintains a strong faith in God.

In the same interview, Captain Sandy shared that having a relationship while being a captain at sea was extremely difficult. "It's hard to have a relationship being a yacht captain. And most of my friends that are yacht captains, they've divorced or they hook up with people in the industry."

What Are The Below Deck Mediterranean Season 1 Cast Doing Now?

Below Deck Med aired back in 2016 with fans wondering what happened to the crew on the Ionian Princess.

However, Captain Sandy wanted to see where things would go with Leah, and the two met in person in late 2018. Leah told the outlet that the two had an instant connection.

"It was definitely unexpected. It just happened, when you meet another soul that you connect with at such a deep level, it is unexplainable and so beautiful."

Captain Sandy Proposed To Leah On Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9

In the Season 9 trailer, Captain Sandy tells chief stewardess Aesha Scott about her plans to propose to Leah in Greece. Later in the season, viewers watch Captain Sandy get down on one knee and ask for Leah's hand in marriage, to which she says yes, and the crew joyfully celebrate from behind-the-scenes.

The season is the first time viewers get to really see Captain Sandy being so open about her private life . After five years together, Captain Sandy made it official. Speaking to E! News about their proposal, the reality star shared that she had wanted to ask for Leah's hand in marriage sooner .

"I knew from the minute I met her, but the timing had to be right. I wanted to make sure we could truly do life together first." Captain Sandy later shared how her vision to pop the question to Leah went down. "I planned a boat ride t oa beautiful cove. I had it decorated with flowers with a path to a small table accompanied by three violinists where we would sit and have a small date. I shared my vision list of love I had written and wanted, then got down on one knee. Then she said, 'yes!'"

Why Below Deck’s Captain Sandy Yawn Said She ‘Should Have Been Dead 10 Times’

Below Deck's Captain Sandy Yawn stated that her life has been so dangerous that it is a miracle she is still alive.

In May, Captain Sandy and Leah tied the knot on a superyacht owned by a close friend. The captain shared photos of their wedding day on Instagram, and wrote, "I had no idea how amazing marriage could be! It feels incredible, and I feel like the luckiest woman in the world. I love you, Leah Rae Yawn!! Thank you for taking my last name!"

Captain Sandy also shared that their wedding was filmed for Bravo and Below Deck fan-favorites Aesha and Kate Chastain were also in attendance.

Aesha Scott's ‘Below Deck Med’ Return Could Cause Serious Drama With Captain Sandy

The Big Picture

  • Aesha Scott is a top-tier 'Below Deck' star with impeccable leadership skills.
  • Captain Sandy's leadership style will be tested by Aesha as Chief Stew.
  • Captain Sandy's bias against the interior crew may be challenged by Aesha's excellence.

Captain Sandy Yawn has a long history of not loving her Chief Stewardesses. Whether it's her bias against the interior and her feeling that they are merely "the help," Captain Sandy has often butted heads with the head of the interior. Most notably with former Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier . With Aesha Scott , a former protégé of Hannah, back on Below Deck Mediterranean as the Chief Stew, her experience working with Captain Sandy previously and her impeccable working relationship with Captain Jason Chambers on Below Deck Down Under , will show why she's one of the best at her jobs. Based on both their experiences, if Captain Sandy butts heads with Aesha, it will prove that maybe Captain Sandy is the problem as the common denominator.

Below Deck Mediterranean was the first official spin-off of the flagship program. Bringing the action to the stunning locales along the Mediterranean Sea, viewers were gifted an opportunity to see a new crew with the same drama they were already familiar with. The second season introduced a new captain to the show as history was made. Captain Sandy Yawn became the first and only female captain in the Below Deck Cinematic Universe. As a pioneer in the industry, viewers were immediately taken by her drastically different working style compared to previous Below Deck Med Captain Mark Howard and the flagship's icon, Captain Lee Rosbach . Captain Sandy had a much more hands-on approach. Dare we call it aggressively micromanaging. Always finding a way to appear on camera, Captain Sandy inserted herself into all aspects of the show, which caused her to be quite polarizing. But, at the end of the day, she has remained the face of this franchise. As three more spin-offs came to life, Below Deck Down Under tapped fan-favorite Aesha Scott to lead the franchise. Having a season and a half under her belt on Below Deck Med , Aesha Scott rose to superstardom. Fans were in complete shock when the Below Deck Med Season 9 trailer dropped as Aesha Scott was back, trading life Down Under for another run in the Med. So how will these two work together with Aesha now in a leadership role? It's time to analyze what could come.

Below Deck Mediterranean

In a luxury charter yacht traveling across the Mediterranean, crew members face both the challenges of managing upscale guest expectations and the complexities of their own interrelationships. Each episode highlights the high-octane world of yachting where exceptional service standards meet personal drama and adventure.

Aesha Scott Has Become a Top Tier 'Below Deck' Star

Fans of Below Deck were first introduced to Aesha Scott during Season 4 of Below Deck Mediterranean . Joining the crew of Sirocco, Aesha served as the 2nd Stew under the tutelage of Hannah Ferrier. Known for her infamous voice, her dirty mind, and sickeningly cute relationship with deckhand Jack Stirrup , the New Zealand native was a refreshing addition to the franchise. Despite a chaotic season with an over-her-head Chef that was swiftly fired, a 3rd Stew that took over the galley before a villainous Chef Ben Robinson saved the charter season, and an unresponsive 3rd stew who was hired and let go in the blink of an eye, Aesha still managed to emerge as a breakout star. It seemed her time on Below Deck Med was one-and-done, but after the chaos of Hannah Ferrier's shock firing during Season 5, Aesha received a call from Captain Sandy to come in and serve under new Chief Stew Bugsy Drake . Aesha balanced her professional working relationship and her preconceived notions about Bugsy well, and once again, Aesha was nothing but a delight. It seemed like an obvious choice when Aesha popped up on the third Below Deck spin-off in 2022. Serving as the Chief Stew for the megayacht in the Great Barrier Reef, Aesha brought all her silly, goofy nuances and paired them with exceptional leadership skills. She still had "the mind of a boy going through puberty." If fans thought you couldn't love Aesha even more, she proved you wrong!

It wouldn't be a season of Below Deck without some drama, and in her two seasons of that show, she handled the moments with professionalism and grace. During Season 1, Aesha had an amazing working relationship with her 2nd Stew Tumi Mhlongo, who would go on to become Chief Stew during Below Deck Med 's 8th season. But Aesha's 3rd Stew, Magda Ziomek, had little interest in doing her job. She focused on texting her boyfriend, and when she used up all the ship's bandwidth, it was time to let her. But nothing compared to the horrid charter season chef, Chef Ryan McKeown . There are very few people who can't get along with Aesha. Insert Chef Ryan here. They were at loggerheads until the day that Chef Ryan was let go. In the end, Aesha won the battle. During Season 2, Below Deck Down Under was rocked with twin horrific sexual assault and sexual harassment incidents. Bosun Luke Jones and 2nd Stew Laura Bileskaline were immediately relieved from their duties. The shocking situation continued to prove Aesha's ability to lead through the chaotic moments that followed.

Captain Sandy's Leadership is About To Be Tested

As fans gushed over the handsome Captain Jason Chambers, Aesha developed a brother-sister relationship with her superior. Their bond was quite reminiscent of Captain Lee's relationship with Below Deck 's biggest name, Kate Chastain . The familiar coexistence became the backbone of the franchise. They had a mutual respect that was earned. Captain Jason trusted Aesha more than anyone else that was part of his crew. Having learned under Hannah, witnessing her fiery relationship with Captain Sandy, Aesha took the best of Hannah's working style and ability to adjust to specific personalities, and used it as growth for her own personal journey. No one is perfect, but Aesha Scott just might be. With no dark marks on her Below Deck resume, having a lead position back on Below Deck Med will be quite telling. Fans know she can lead and be an impeccable Chief Stew. But how will she fair with her former boss?

With seven seasons behind the wheel, Captain Sandy is the longest tenured crew member on Below Deck Med . But she also seems to be the least popular among the fans. Overcompensating for the gender inequality in the yachting industry, Captain Sandy's mission on the show is primarily to uphold her storied reputation. Viewers of her first few seasons had their heads spun around because of the amount of times Captain Sandy dropped the line about her reputation. She has always seemed to be on the show to become the star that Captain Lee already was, rather than breaking the stigma of female boat captains. Oh, and then there is her obsession with water toys. She demanded the deck team put the toys out for the guests the moment they anchor. She bills it as an attempt to maximize the guest experience, but she has also let it slip that she wants to be the flashiest boat in all the Med. Oh, and don't forget about her unrelenting desire for immaculate table settings. It's all about image for Captain Sandy. She is a goddess in her own little universe.

Captain Sandy Brings Own Style to Below Deck Med

Her wishy-washy approach to her crews over the seasons has caused viewers to question her micromanaging presence. In one season, she holds strong about the rules of Maritime Law, which resulted in the firing of longtime Chief Stew Hannah. Hannah, who was dealing with anxiety, didn't have a warm reception from Captain Sandy when she shared her battle with it just two seasons prior. When Hannah revealed it was over her growing feelings towards Bosun Conrad Empson , Captain Sandy essentially told her to suck it up. During the seasons following Hannah's dismissal, crew members, including Season 6's deckhand Lloyd Spencer and Season 7's brilliant Chef David White , experienced their own bouts of anxiety, and Captain Sandy was there for them. Perhaps she learned from the fandom blow back of how insensitive she was on the topic of mental health. Or maybe it was her favoritism toward those departments, but we'll get to that. Then, when it came to who on the crew is meant to decide cabin assignments, Captain Sandy publicly obliterated Hannah when Bosun Malia White 's boyfriend turned replacement chef, Tom Checketts, came on board, and they wanted to bunk together. And once again, a season later, when the management company told Captain Sandy that there could not be any co-ed room sharing, she left the room assignment in the hands of Chief Stew Katie Flood , contradicting who was in charge of cabins. It should be noted that every other season it's always the Chief Stew. Captain Sandy just had a deep-rooted hatred of Hannah. Hypocrisy or just reading the comment section? Who's to say?

Captain Sandy has notoriously played favorites among her crews. Season after season, there was at least one member of the exterior team that she had a fondness for. By far, the most prominent example was her future mini-me, Malia White. Coming in as a deckhand in Season 2, Captain Sandy was elated to see a woman on deck, exclaiming she saw a lot of herself in Malia. While Malia was certainly not the first nor last female deckhand in the franchise's history, the simple fact that Captain Sandy took a liking to her turned Malia into a villain in the eyes of the fans. And to no fault of her own. There also might have been an underlying crush on the part of Captain Sandy towards Malia, thanks to her infamous Cameo scandal. What has been displayed through the treatment of Malia has also exposed her views of the exterior versus the interior. Because she has a closer connection with the deckhands, she sees them as the end all and be all. For the interior, she sees them as "the help." When Bugsy defends her rival after Captain Sandy claimed that Hannah just waited tables , you knew that Captain Sandy was out of line. Her view on the interior team is unlike how any other captain treats their interior.

So why is all of this important? Aesha Scott has proven she goes above and beyond for her job. She has risen to the ranks of Kate and Hannah as the gold standard of Chief Stews. Now, as the only Chief Stew to crossover into two different franchises, Aesha Scott may actually be the best. She is beloved. Captain Sandy came into her time on Below Deck Mediterranean with a bias against Hannah Ferrier from watching Season 1. It seeped into how she views the interior crew. With Aesha learning from Hannah, on top of having had an unpleasant time with Tumi during Season 8, Captain Sandy may have some preconceived notions of Aesha. But if Captain Sandy watched the two brilliant seasons of Below Deck Down Unde r , she'll know how exceptional Aesha is. If she does not approve of Aesha as Chief Stew, it will prove that Captain Sandy is, and has always been, the problem. Protect Aesha at all costs!
