Dilbar, owned by Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, is the largest superyacht in the world and it's valued at $735 million.

In April 2022, the yacht was impounded in Germany . German federal police said they seized the yacht after an investigation into "offshore concealment" and determined that Usmanov's sister is the owner of the yacht. The boat remains at a shipyard in Hamburg, Germany.

I make it an annual tradition to visit St. Barths during the holidays, and this year the island is looking the best it has in many years. Lush green landscapes, crystal clear and very warm waters, clean beaches, and famed resorts opening with stunning new additions. Many will stay throughout Christmas on the island of Antigua and then party with the traditional fireworks New Years Eve celebration in St Barths.

There’s a theme that is repeated on countless yachts large and small the world over – superyachting, for most, is not about being seen but rather the opposite. It’s about yacht families and their friends enjoying precious, private moments away from the pressures of demanding business lives and the long hours running those businesses can entail.

“I have an extended family, and when our schedules allow we all like to gather on the yacht and spend some quality time as a family,” Douglas Barrowman , owner of the yacht Turquoise , told Superyacht Life back in 2017. “There is no place like a yacht for family togetherness.”

A love of the sea, adventure and technology

Superyachts and yacht ownership are also a way to explore the world around us, and to interact with and grow to understand extraordinarily diverse communities from remote Pacific islands to the Scandinavian Arctic. It’s something that inspired tech entrepreneur Jasper Smith to combine his love of adventure and his love of the sea with an opportunity for owners to give back while indulging their passion.

“I have always had a deep passion for the ocean,” Smith says. “I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau movies and being enthralled at the idea of being challenged by an endeavour.” When he set out to find his own perfect explorer yacht, however, he realised it didn’t yet exist. His answer was to create Arksen. “My aim with Arksen was to create the perfect machines to enable adventure,” he enthuses. “I also wanted to build sustainable boats which considered full life cycles, from material sourcing to recycling.”

That’s not all – Arksen also asks owners of its yachts to sign up to a pledge it calls 10% for the Ocean, where they will donate 10% of their vessel’s time to philanthropic activities. “A lot of people who have the money feel a responsibility to try and make sure that the oceans are well looked after,” Smith explains. “The people that are attracted to Arksen are passionate about the ocean and want to go off on slightly more advanced expeditions and trips. With that audience, there is a tremendous buy-in to the boat being for more than just their own purposes.”

Indeed, Allen’s support yacht Axis played a vital role in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian – one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Bahamas.

“We had to drop everything and help after the hurricane,” says Allen. “ Axis delivered over £700,000 of supplies and made multiple trips to Little Grand island in the Bahamas. We’ve turned it into the epitome of how to organise hurricane relief.” The team helped get the local school back up and running, and organised for a group from Florida Power and Light to help restore power. “The island also lost their water tower,” he adds, “so we delivered four tanks on  Axis .”

Celebrating the good in the superyachting good life

From family time to time spent embracing the global family, superyacht owners have a far greater positive impact than many assume from preconceived ideas about what a superyacht is and the sort of person who owns or charters one. It’s one of the reasons The Superyacht Life Foundation, in association with the Monaco Yacht Show , has unveiled The Honours, which is a way to celebrate the people of our industry rather than the yachts which so often get sole focus. It’s about recognising the extraordinary contributions that people make, the change they inspire, the opportunities they create, and the lives they change.

On 26 September, the eve of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, three honourees – nominated by people from across the superyacht industry, and selected from a shortlist by an expert panel of industry judges – will be feted for their work and contribution to superyachting. These are industry professionals and yacht owners who epitomise what superyachting can do. These are people who highlight the good in the superyachting good life.

Yacht owners, impactful journeys

All around the globe, yacht owners are enjoying precious time on their yachts with family and friends, and many are also realising that their yachts can be a force for good and for change, tying in with their philanthropic works and humanitarian endeavours.

“Our yacht is a platform for much of our life,” offers Joe Anderson , co-owner of the Benovia Winery in California with his wife, Mary Dewane. “For instance, we used it at a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis in Baltimore at the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner event. The Blue Angels were flying overhead and used Bella Una [the couple’s yacht] as a GPS coordinate and performed flybys, tipping their wings at us. It was quite a thrill. Having a yacht is a way to keep the family intact, enjoy time with friends and have fun.”

A seized superyacht shows up in Pacific Northwest — minus one Russian oligarch owner

EVERETT, Wash. — It's not clear whether Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov had plans to visit Puget Sound this spring — the French Riviera is more the style of the U.S.-sanctioned mining and energy multibillionaire.

But on April 29, the Amadea, a 348-foot, $300 million-plus superyacht said to be owned by Kerimov, arrived in the Port of Everett to have some work done at a local shipyard.

A sleek, white shark of a ship with a knifelike bow, raked profile and quarters for 16 guests and 36 crew, Amadea swanned past Everett's industrial waterfront with a tug escort and all the made-for-TV glamour of an international celebrity fugitive. Kerimov, of course, was not on board.

In 2022, Amadea ("God's love" in Latin) was seized in Fiji at the request of U.S. authorities who claim Kerimov has enabled Russian aggression in Ukraine and Syria. Money laundering and conspiracy were also alleged.

At the time, the seizure was hailed as a warning to "every corrupt Russian oligarch that they cannot hide — not even in the remotest part of the world," as a deputy U.S. attorney general put it in a press statement.

But as any boat owner in this boat-focused community will tell you, seizing a superyacht is one thing. Maintaining its value as an asset is another — especially when the asset is the size of a ferry and equipped with a theater, a gym, beauty salon, teak decks, 30-foot-long pool, helipad and twin 5,766-horsepower diesels.

"They're saying it's costing us $7 million a year to keep it up," said Chris Petersen, a retired fisherman who runs a metal coatings shop on West Marine View Drive, a few blocks from the port and who, like many here, has been following the superyacht saga since April 29.

Indeed, fuel, maintenance, insurance and salary for the crew of Amadea during its impoundment in San Diego ran around $740,000 a month, according to federal court filings by the Marshals Service.

In February, the Justice Department told a federal court it intended to halt this "excessive ... drain on the public" purse  by auctioning off Amadea, which the government claims Kerimov acquired in 2021.

But selling off this excessive drain has been complicated.

There is litigation challenging Amadea's seizure because the vessel allegedly wasn't owned by Kerimov, but by another Russian oligarch, who is not sanctioned, according to court papers.

Another complication, more relevant to Everett: Amadea's insurance policy, according to court filings, requires service that can only be done by hauling the vessel out of the water — a job that appears to be slated for the dry dock facilities at Everett Ship Repair, on the port's East Waterway.

Few details of the project have been shared. Port officials have referred all questions to Everett Ship Repair, whose vice president of service sales, Lane Richards, politely declined to comment.

But a Justice Department spokesperson confirmed May 2 that Amadea was indeed "in Washington for standard dry dock maintenance."

And on May 1, the vessel in question could be seen berthed, like a slightly lost Imperial Starship,  on the south side of Pier 3, adjacent to Everett Ship Repair's dry dock and the Washington State Ferry Salish.

All the no-commenting has only added to the atmosphere of maritime intrigue and speculation in a town ordinarily unperturbed by big, secrecy-shrouded ships, including those at the nearby Everett Naval Station.

Many here wonder why the U.S. government spent the money to bring Amadea all the way to Everett, when there are dry dock facilities in San Diego, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon; even Seattle is 5 nautical miles closer to San Diego.

Amadea's fuel burn "is probably in the 8-to-10 gallons per mile range," said Dennis Butterfield, a retired car dealership manager and former boat owner, as he kept an eye on the Russian superyacht on May 1 from a viewpoint on Warren Avenue. "That's the United States government at work, if you ask me."

Butterfield's estimate was close: based on vessel specifications featured on the yachting website, YachCharterFleet, the 4,400-ton Amadea burns roughly 11 gallons per mile at a cruising speed of 15 mph.

The Justice Department declined to justify Amadea's four-day journey from San Diego to Everett.

Such secrecy would likely suit Kerimov, who Forbes once described as "one of the most private Russian billionaires," and who is also said to have close ties to the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The 58-year-old serves in the Russian Federation Senate, is reportedly worth nearly $11 billion and has owned villas on the French Riviera and elsewhere.

He may also have owned a rare Fabergé egg, according to accounts of the search of the Amadea after its seizure.

Beginning in 2017, Kerimov was listed by U.S. officials as one of a number of Russian oligarchs "who profit from the Russian government through corruption and its malign activity around the globe."

In March 2022, after the FBI reportedly linked Kerimov to the Amadea, the vessel was seized under a program known as Task Force KleptoCapture and eventually sailed to San Diego under an American flag.

But Amadea's more recent trip likely had less to do with the vessel's checkered lineage than with a shortage of West Coast dry dock capacity, especially for large vessels.

Unlike the East Coast and the Gulf Coast, ship repair infrastructure on the West Coast is "is woefully undersized," said Craig Hooper, a former naval ship building industry executive who writes and advises on security and defense issues.

In recent decades, several private shipyards with dry dock facilities have closed and building new capacity faces high costs and regulatory hurdles, Hooper said. As a result, "long transits to an open facility are relatively commonplace these days," he added.

In the case of the Amadea, Hooper hypothesized, "the responsible party may have put the job out for bid and an Everett yard was the available, lowest-cost option."

According to court filings, Amadea's dry dock work is expected to cost $5.6 million and take two months.

By that time, federal officials may have sorted Amadea's other complications.

Last fall, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, the former head of state-owed oil company Rosneft, claimed Amadea isn't owned by Kerimov, but by Khudainatov. Attorneys argue that since Khudainatov wasn't under sanctions, the yacht was "not forfeitable, as it neither constitutes nor is derived from any unlawful activity."

But federal prosecutors contend "that Khudainatov is just a straw owner put forward to disguise Kerimov's ownership of the vessel," according to an April 19 filing in a federal court in New York, where the case is ongoing.

In the meantime, Everett will take some pleasure in the Amadea's august presence.

Port of Everett officials, though tight lipped about the vessel's particulars, were clearly pleased by the message it sends of the port's growing status as a maritime hub.

"Anything that puts Everett on the international map is a good thing!" said Kate Anderson, port spokesperson, in an email response to an inquiry about the Amadea.

Locals, too, appeared to be enjoying the celebrity by association.

"That magnitude of wealth — it's just another world," said Petersen, the retired fisherman.

Others wondered who would be foolish enough to buy a vessel whose ownership was being contested by Russian oligarchs.

But mostly, folks here appeared to sympathize with Uncle Sam's desire to be rid of the costly, controversial craft.

That was the sentiment of John Mostrom, who had taken a break from mowing his lawn Wednesday to peer down at the Amadea from the Warren Avenue overlook.

"They say the two happiest days of a boat owner's life," Mostrom noted, "are when they buy the boat and when they sell it."

Ibrahimović has posted the yacht on social media extensively, with videos of him and his friends playing with a drone and putting her huge locker of water toys - which includes a floating dock - to good use. NFL superstar Tom Brady took delivery of a 16 metre custom cruiser from Dutch builder Wajer towards the end of 2020 after signing a $50 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The quarterback is clearly a keen fan of the Wajer yachts after he recently announced he had commissioned a larger mode, the Wajer 77. The Wajer 55S, christened Viva a Vida , sports a baby blue hull and is powered by three 435hp Volvo Penta engines guaranteeing a wild ride with speeds in excess of 40 knots. A walkaround centre console allows guests to make the most of the deck space available with stowage for SeaBobs and other toys concealed beneath the aft stairway. Below deck, the Wajer 55S offers accommodation for four. Other cool features include push-button fenders and an extendable swim platform. The 55S is the souped-up version of its older sibling, the Wajer 55 , and comes from the boards of Dutch design studio Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design .

Tennis ace  Rafael Nadal  is the proud new owner of a Sunreef 80 Power superyacht , which was delivered in June 2020. Nadal commissioned the catamaran after previously chartering a number of Sunreef catamarans and meeting yard founder and president Francis Lapp at the 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival. This is not his first foray into yachting however. Nadal previously owned a  Monte Carlo Yachts  76 named  Beethoven  which he bought in 2016. Nadal has spoken openly about his love of yachting and his decision to invest in a yacht, telling  Boat International , "Because I have a yacht, I am able to forget about everything and get away from that tiring stress. I do have a real passion for [superyachts]. It is rare that I see a superyacht from a distance and I don’t know its name. I know them all!"

Fashion designer Giorgio Armani has recently celebrated 40 years of life at sea  and of course the fashion icon has a suitably stylish yacht. Enter the 65 metre Codecasa yacht Main , owned by Giorgio Armani, which has been designed inside and out with input from Armani. The exterior of the yacht is in an unusual dark green colour, which suits the angular, military-inspired exterior lines. Inside, the yacht has a muted palette and features wow factors in a spiral staircase, gym, cinema and guest accommodation for 12.

Vendetta owned by Billy Joel

The modern classic commuter yacht Vendetta is just one of the many yachts that Billy Joel has owned. The "Piano Man" is a yacht fanatic, to the extent that he's even a celebrity yacht designer . Designed by Doug Zurn, the 17 metre Vendetta was created to be a true replica of the classic gentleman's commuter launches that were popularised in the 1920s for their quick speed to run down the Long Island Sound and into New York City. True to the intended form of the vessels, Billy Joel told BOAT International  that he has used the yacht to run from his home in Long Island to the City to perform in a concert. At one point, Billy Joel owned five yachts, including 29 metre Inace explorer yacht Audacious (re-named Miss Sarah J ) ,  which he converted to house a few of his motorcycles. Fresh from a refit, Vendetta has recently joined the brokerage market and is listed for sale with Fraser .

Infinity owned by NBA star Tony Parker

In December 2018, Turkish yard AvA Yachts announced that it had sold the second hull in its 35 metre Kando 110 series to NBA star Tony Parker and the yacht was delivered two years later. Named Infinity , the steel and aluminium full displacement yacht will feature a bulbous bow and has been designed in-house. The 340GT yacht will accommodate 12 guests in six cabins with crew quarters for six including a separate captain’s double cabin. The four-decked yacht will feature a “light, contemporary interior décor” chosen by the basketball star and his wife, who are said to have put the yard through a rigorous selection process before choosing AvA for their new build.

Freedom owned by Roberto Cavalli

Much secrecy surrounded the construction of fashion designer Roberto Cavalli’s yacht until it was delivered in 2018. Built by Italian shipyard Cerri Cantieri Navali , the 27-metre Freedom was designed by Tommaso Spadolini in collaboration with her owner. According to Cavalli, the inspiration for the yacht’s design was the aesthetic of batman’s superhero batmobile. This explains the severe lines, jet black exterior and tinted windows which make up the yacht’s distinctive appearance. on board, Cavalli’s signature animal-print furnishings adorn the cabins and saloons. Freedom can accommodate six guests and three crew members and has two dining areas on board. Powered by three water jet engines, Freedom’s moderate size means that she can reach a top speed of 40 knots.

Eos owned by Diane von Furstenburg

Launched by  Lürssen in 2006, 93 metre sailing yacht Eos was bought by fashion designer Diane von Furstenburg and her husband IAC Chairman Barry Diller in 2009. The schooner features exterior design by Bill Langan and interior design by Francois Catroux with accommodation for 16 guests and 21 crew. Diller and von Furstenburg often use the yacht to host a star-studded group of friends with Bravo host Andy Cohen the latest celebrity spotted on this superyacht .

Alice Guo confirms leaving PH by boats, one of which was a yacht

Dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo on Monday said that they left the Philippines via boats, one of which was a yacht.

"Umalis po kami, Madam Chair, by boat po," Guo told a Senate panel.

(We left, Mada'm Chair, by boat.)

"Meron po kaming sinakyang yate po," she added, confirming the information asked by Senator Risa Hontiveros who is the chairperson of the panel.

(There was a yacht we boarded.)

After being pressed by the senators to tell more details about their escape, Guo said they climbed aboard the yacht in a port in Metro Manila.

However, Guo refused to divulge to the public the name of the person who facilitated their yacht ride and the owner of the same.

What she only recalled was that the yacht has "wings" stickers and numbers on it.

The senators tried to get the names of the facilitator and the owner by asking Guo to write it on a piece of paper, but she requested them not to divulge it in public.

Guo wrote the name of the facilitator of the trip on a paper, but she noted that she is not sure if he is the owner of the yacht.

Guo has repeatedly told the senators that she is afraid for her safety due to threats which she refused to divulge to the Senate panel.

After riding the yacht for a "few hours", they transferred to a bigger boat. She said she doesn't know the exact location where they made the transfer.

"Madilim pa rin po...Basta dagat po," she said.

(It was still dark. It was in the sea.)

After transferring to a bigger boat, Guo said they stayed in one room for days. She added that she was not aware of the time because they were told not to use their cellphones.

"Siguro mga four or three or five [days]. Basta matagal po...Four days po siguro... Hindi po kami pinapalabas," she said.

(Maybe four or three or five [days]. It was long... Four days maybe... We were not allowed to go out.)

She admitted that she felt afraid in the middle of the second boat ride.

"Kung puwede lang umatras, aatras na po ako...Nakakatakot po talaga," she said.

(If it were just possible to back out, I would have backed out... It was really scary.)

"Gusto ko na po umuwi. Gusto ko na po bumalik," she added.

(I wanted to go home. I wanted to go back.)

Asked why she did not return, Guo said, "Nagkamali po talaga ako (I really made a mistake)."

After riding the second "big" boat, Guo said they transferred to another small boat then proceeded to Malaysia.

"Paglabas po namin, may sinakyan pa kami isang maliit na bangka... 'Yung bangka po bumiyahe pa po kami tapos Malaysia na po," she said.

(When we got out, we boarded a small boat... That boat traveled to Malaysia.)

Asked about the location where they arrived in Malaysia, Guo said she doesn't know because they were instructed not to look around the places they have been.

In a separate Senate investigation last August 27, Guo's supposed sister, Shiela Guo, told the senators that they left the Philippines by riding several boats .

According to Shiela, the three of them were fetched by a van from their farm in Tarlac and they traveled southbound from dinner time to midnight.

However, she said she does not know the location where they rode a small white boat. According to Shiela, the small boat can only cater to around 10 people.

They then transferred to a bigger boat which Shiela said can accommodate many people. The second ship appears to be a fishing ship because there were nets on it, according to Shiela.

After riding what seemed to be a fishing ship, Shiela said they transferred again to a smaller boat.

Asked if the last boat transferred them to Malaysia, Shiela answered in the affirmative.

It took a month before the Philippine government became aware that Guo and her siblings had left the country in July.

Alice Guo is the subject of multiple complaints, one of which was filed with a Tarlac court, which ordered her arrest for her alleged connections to the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) in Bamban that was raided for illegal activities.

Among the complaints she is facing are graft, money laundering, and human trafficking.
