Massive 50-foot ‘megalodon’ detected in atlantic ocean stuns scientists.

Daddy shark doo doo doo doo?

Researchers were flabbergasted after picking up what appeared to be a massive 50-foot “Megalodon” on sea scanners underneath their boat. An Instagram post detailing the alleged “discovery” is currently making waves amid the shark scourge plaguing US waters .

“On a recent shark research trip, we were all amused to see this shape appear on our fish finder for several minutes,” researchers with the Atlantic Shark Institute wrote regarding the sinister shape detected in undisclosed waters.

They initially mistook it for a Megalodon — a prehistoric shark that’s been extinct for three million years, and was the subject of the 2018 horror movie “Meg” based on the book of the same name.

“Based on the length of the image we estimated the ‘Meg’ to be about 50 feet long, weighing in at 40 tons!” the ecstatic researchers wrote.

An accompanying screenshot of the fish finder shows the massive mark, which appeared to be in the shape of a giant shark complete with a dorsal fin.

"On a recent shark research trip we were all amused to see this shape appear on our fish finder for several minutes," researchers with the Atlantic Shark Institute wrote in an Instagram post detailing the shark-like shape.

Unfortunately, the scientists’ excitement quickly faded after the mythical monster turned out to be a school of fish — in other words, it was a red herring.

“We waited for one of the rods to go off however, much to our disappointment, the shape started to transition into a large school of Atlantic Mackerel that hung around the boat for about 15 minutes,” lamented the disillusioned researchers. “So close, but so far! The Megalodon (Otodus megalodon), disappeared more than 3 million years ago and will likely stay that way, but, for a few minutes, we thought he had returned!”

Instagram viewers commiserated with the crestfallen shark enthusiasts.

“I got excited for 10 seconds,” said one, while another wrote, “Haha — that would’ve got my heart racing.”

“I was hopeful,” rued another armchair cryptozoologist. “Meg had a huge Boop there. Almost wish she was real. Almost.”

As of yet, no one has seen a Megalodon, also known as a Megatooth shark, which reportedly went extinct around 2.58 million years ago, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica .

Unfortunately, the so-called Megalodon turned out to be a school of fish.

The largest fish ever known, the Megalodon, reportedly weighed up to 143,000 pounds and attained a maximum length of 59 feet — three times as long as the biggest great white sharks. If that wasn’t terrifying enough, the monstrous predator also boasted a 10-foot wide mouth, which it reportedly used to devour whales and other supersized prey .

While the shark itself has yet to be seen by human eyes, its colossal fossilized teeth are fairly common with a recent discovery coming in 2020, when a South Carolina woman found one that weighed a pound.

In a similar incident last year, cruise ship passengers were flabbergasted after spotting a giant shark in the Atlantic Ocean that many social media users speculated was a Megalodon. However, others surmised that the beast was a basking shark, a harmless filter feeder that’s as big as a double-decker bus.

"On a recent shark research trip we were all amused to see this shape appear on our fish finder for several minutes," researchers with the Atlantic Shark Institute wrote in an Instagram post detailing the shark-like shape.

Did a Megalodon Stalk a Cruise Ship?

It is estimated the animal in question measured about 18 feet long., madison dapcevich, published may 30, 2021.

False

About this rating

An authentic video was captured in the Atlantic Ocean showing what one expert told Snopes was likely a female white shark — not a megalodon.

A video shared to the social media platform TikTok on May 25, 2021 , showed what appeared to be an extremely large shark — perhaps the now-extinct supergiant megalodon — circling a ship.

Originally uploaded by musician Alex Albrecht, the video was said to have been captured while sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. At the time of this writing, the video had been liked more than 4.8 million times.

The magnitude of the shark’s size was made visible by its comparison to the people standing along the deck of the ship, prompting some users to suggest the seemingly impossible: that the animal in question was a now-extinct marine giant that once swam the ancient seas, a megalodon.

Nicknamed “The Meg” by a 2018 science-fiction flick of the same name, the megalodon clocks in as the world’s largest shark. Megalodon fossils date back to 20 million years ago, and not only was the megalodon (scientific name Otodus megalodon ) the largest shark on Earth, but the Natural History Museum reported that it was also one of the largest fish to ever exist — measuring up to 36 feet in length and three times longer than the white shark. It is important to note that estimates of megalodon size are not definitive, as a complete fossil specimen has never been found.

The megalodon went extinct around 3.8 million years ago. As such, other TikTok users suggested that the shark in the video may have been a basking shark, the second largest fish in the world, second only to the whale shark, according to the oceanic conservation group Oceana . Snopes spoke with John McCosker, the chairman of aquatic biology at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, who said that the animal in the TikTok was indeed a “big shark,” but was likely not a basking shark.

“It is probably a white shark (to call it a great white shark is just hyperbolic), which exists in those waters. I suspect that it is as large as 18 feet, but there is no way to calculate accurately from that photo,” said McCosker.

A look through the scientific literature confirmed what McCosker said. The white shark, scientific name Carcharodon carcharias , can weigh up to 6,600 pounds and grow to a maximum size of around 20 feet in length, noted Oceana . (However, the Smithsonian Institute reports that average female measures around 16 feet long, while males typically reach about 13 feet.)

“Great white sharks are opportunistic predators, feeding from the ocean’s surface to the seafloor. As great white sharks grow in size, so does the range of their prey,” said Oceana. “Smaller great whites prey on fish, rays, and crustaceans and when they are larger also eat seals, sea lions, dolphins, seabirds, marine turtles, rays, and other sharks.”

What remains unclear is why the shark was circling the ship in the first place. Snopes contacted the original poster of the video, Albrecht, to receive more information about where the video was taken but did not receive a response in time for publication. We will update the article accordingly if we hear back.

Is there a Megalodon lurking deep beneath the waters off the New England coast?

RELATED VIDEO ABOVE: Boy finds prehistoric artifact.

Researchers with the Atlantic Shark Institute spotted a shape around 50 feet long on their fish finder south of Block Island, Rhode Island, that lasted for several minutes.

The post from the Atlantic Shark Institute added they believed whatever was lurking in the waters below could weigh around 40 tons.

Does the 'Meg' exist? That's the question researchers with the Atlantic Shark Institute found themselves asking when they spotted this on the radar.

The extinct Megalodons disappeared more than three million years ago, but that doesn’t stop them from being a hot topic. Most recently, the massive extinct shark was the center of the 2018 sci-fi movie "The Meg," starring Jason Statham, BingBing Li and Rainn Wilson.

But what about the gigantic image spotted on scanners in the Atlantic Ocean? “Does the Meg exist?” The Instagram post from the institute asks.

Researchers waited, but were ultimately disappointed when the shape of the extinct 50-footer transitioned into a large school of Atlantic mackerel. Those fish decided to hang around the researchers’ boat for another 15 minutes.

The post from the institute ends: “So close, but so far! The Megalodon (Otodus megalodon), disappeared more than 3 million years ago and will likely stay that way, but, for a few minutes, we thought he had returned!”

The Atlantic Shark Institute's mission is to do the highest quality shark research and help conserve and manage them. It is a Rhode Island-based nonprofit. To learn more about the institute, click here .

FACT CHECK: Does This Image Show A Megalodon In The 1940s?

An image shared on Facebook allegedly shows a Megalodon swimming alongside a German U-boat in the 1940s.

Verdict: False

The photo appears to be an altered version of a frame taken from real U-boat footage. There is no evidence that any scientist has suggested the image is genuine or shows an extinct Megalodon.

Fact Check:

Megalodons were allegedly the biggest shark species ever recorded, with some growing to about 60 feet long, according to the National Museum of Natural History . Their extinction is thought to have occurred roughly 3.6 million years ago due to changes in the ocean’s temperature and food chain evolution, the U.K.’s Natural History Museum says .

In the Facebook image , two fins listed as 64 feet apart appear to be visible in the water behind a submarine. “Photo from the 1940s of what many scientists believe to be an extinct megalodon swimming next to a German U-boat,” reads text included in the image. (RELATED: Does This Image Show Trees Growing Through Chairs Set Up For A Wedding In Poland Before The Nazi Invasion?)

The purported picture first appeared in a Discovery Channel program titled “ Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives ,” as part of the network’s “ Shark Week ” lineup in 2013. In the show, a marine biologist named Collin Drake suggests the finned creature in the picture could have caused a recent shipwreck in April 2013, according to the show’s description .

“Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives” featured disclaimers noting that certain events had been “dramatized” and “none of the institutions or agencies that appear in the film are affiliated with it in any way, nor have approved its contents,” according to The Hollywood Reporter . The documentary provoked a backlash after some claimed it lied in presenting itself as a real scientific documentary, Business Insider reported .

The image of the alleged Megalodon featured in the show and the Facebook post appears to be altered. The fins in the image were added into a still frame from genuine footage of a U-boat filmed far away from Cape Town, South Africa, according to George Monbiot, a columnist for The Guardian . An unedited frame from the authentic footage was shared by The Verge . It shows what appears to be two U-boats, but no fins.

Check Your Fact could not locate a single credible news report online of scientists claiming that the image shows a Megalodon, nor any independent record of a shark-focused marine biologist named Collin Drake. Actor Darron Meyer , who portrayed the character in “Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives,” has appeared in “Doctor Who” and other fictional series, according to IMDb .

Check Your Fact previously debunked an image from September 2020 claiming to show sharks caught on power lines in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura.

More proof a megalodon did not swim with the nazis, author george monbiot calls the discovery channel's integrity into question..

Casey Johnston - Feb 21, 2014 8:29 pm UTC

A problematic image The Discovery Channel included in a documentary as proof Megalodons are still swimming around.

It did not take many inquiries about a photo used by The Discovery Channel to find out it was fake. Author George Monbiot noticed some questionable images used in the channel's documentary Megalodon: The Monster Shark Still Lives , including one with a Megalodon alongside Nazi ships. After a bit of digging, he found the images bore signs suggesting they are not even close to real.

The Megalodon is a species of shark that is estimated to have gone extinct around 2 million years ago. The Discovery Channel's documentary purported to have collected evidence that the Megalodon is alive and well, or was, as recently as the fall of the Third Reich.

The image in question showed a dorsal fin and tail fin that measured 64 feet apart cruising alongside a U-boat in a sepia-toned photo watermarked with a swastika in December 1942. Viewers originally pointed out several seemingly faked images in the documentary, but Monbiot was able to not only pinpoint several problems with one such image, but to locate its source.

Some problems Monbiot pointed out after crowdsourcing feedback about the photo:

  • Nazis didn't watermark photos with a swastika.
  • Sepia-toned photos are an old-timey trope and were typically used for family photos as an extra processing step on black and white photos to make them look better.
  • 64 feet from fin to fin would have made the Megalodon twice as long as it was in prehistoric times.
  • In the photo, the fins create no waves or wakes despite the Megalodon's size and probable power, suggesting it's just… sitting there, in the water.

Finally, Monbiot's readers located the source of the photo: it's a still from some footage of U-boats that is absent of any fins suggesting a massive fish.

It's unclear whether the Discovery Channel doctored the photo itself or found it after a third party had added all of these extra elements. Prior to Monbiot's discovery about Discovery, the channel stated that "people are open to exploring different ideas and concepts in addition to the traditional fare that we air." The show also includes a disclaimer that "certain events and characters in this film have been dramatized."

A representative of Discovery Channel, aka  " The #1 Nonfiction Media Company ,"  was not immediately available for comment.

The Megalodon is a dangerous species of giant shark that roams the open waters of the Sea of Thieves , preying on player ships . There are five types of Megalodon species with varying colours and rarity.

They were first introduced as a time-limited encounter for The Hungering Deep , returning as a permanent encounter, with additional species, in the Shrouded Spoils update.

  • 1 The Encounter
  • 2 Megalodon Species
  • 3.1 Previous Events

The Encounter

Megalodons are vicious predators that appear around Player Ships on open seas. A Megalodon encounter begins when the tense Megalodon music starts playing, after which, the Megalodon appears out of the deep sea behind the Ship and starts swimming closely until the Ship sails out of its hunting grounds or the Megalodon is defeated. Should the player merely sail out it's hunting ground, the Megalodon will not de-spawn. If the player ship returns, the encounter will resume. Each Megalodon spawns with a unique personality, with ranging aggression, sometimes passive until provoked.

A Megalodon will attack the Ship by charging at, and biting the ship, which is accompanied by a tense chorus of violins. This bite attack causes 1-5 holes in the ship's hull depending on ship size. Defeating a Megalodon takes around 10-13 cannonball hits on a Sloop , around 15-18 cannonball hits on a Brigantine and around 30-32 cannonball hits on a Galleon . Sloops and Brigantines also take less damage from the Megalodon's bites.

Players wishing to get rid of a Megalodon may sail close to Outposts , Islands , Seaposts or Shipwrecks ; the Megalodon will turn away and patrol the area where it first appeared.

Megalodon Species

There are five species of Megalodons, each variant having distinguishing colours. Their markings (scars, stripes, etc) may vary per encounter.

Shrouded ghost

The Shrouded Ghost's body becomes a dark purple at night.

Icon Name Description
Blue variant with green eyes, and sometimes light-blue fin.
Dark purple variant with purple fins and eyes.
Dark grey variant with red fins, and orange eyes.
Mossy-yellow variant with yellow fins and eyes.
Pale white-gray variant with peach-coloured fin and eyes.

Nighttime light makes its body appears much darker, and can be confused for the Crested Queen or Shadowmaw. Its peach-coloured fins are the safest way to identify it. It has a chance to spawn in any of the same locations as all other Megalodon species.

Upon defeat, a Megalodon of any type will leave behind a variety of treasure where they died. Players sailing as a Trading Company Emissary will also earn a notable amount of Emissary Grade Reputation (with the exception of Reaper's Bones Emissaries ).

All Megalodon variants have the same treasure pool:

  • 4-6 pieces of Megalodon meat
  • Regular, Ashen, and Cursed Treasure Chests
  • Skeleton Captain’s Chests
  • Stronghold Chests
  • Regular and Ashen Trinkets
  • Regular and Ashen Trade Good Crates
  • Regular and Ashen Bounty Skulls
  • Skeleton Captain’s Skulls
  • Stronghold Skulls
  • Mermaid Gems
  • Collector's Chests with Gold and other small Treasure

Previous Events

  • During The Hungering Deep campaign, players could defeat the Hungering One to earn the Hungering Tattoo Set , Shark Bitemark Scars , and Hungering One Figurehead .
  • During The Hungering Deep Anniversary Event , players could kill 3 Megalodons to earn the Drum of the Deep .
  • During the Hunters of the Deep event, players had to earn Shark Teeth as points via completing Megalodon or Shark related challenges to unlock Shrouded Ghost Hunter Set Ship Cosmetics.
  • A Megalodon's difficulty is scaled to the size of the ship it spawns to.
  • A Megalodon will remain near the area where it appeared and not leave its range.
  • The Megalodon's bite attack is the main threat of the encounter. Landing consecutive cannonball shots (2 on a Sloop, 4 on a Brigantine, 6 on a Galleon) on a charging Megalodon's mouth will disrupt its charge, cancelling the bite attack entirely, or lessen its damage to the hull/negate knock-back effects.
  • A Megalodon's bite does as much damage as a shark bite, and knocks the player back. This will often result in the player being knocked into the water.
  • An increased number of Sharks will spawn in the water when a Megalodon is around.
  • The player may attempt to shoot a Megalodon to eliminate it, such as with an Eye of Reach / Flintlock from distance or a Blunderbuss at close range. This is not very practical and does not do much damage, however, on a sloop it may be effective to have one person shooting it with their gun while the other mans the cannon on the side which the Megalodon is on to trickle more damage towards it's defeat.
  • A Megalodon may not always attack, and may just circle the player out of curiosity.
  • Dying to a Megalodon's bite gives the Blue Flame of Fate , same as other sharks.
  • Sharks will appear near the body of a defeated Megalodon.
  • Cursed Cannonballs have no effect on Megalodons.
  • Megalodons can be harpooned in order to position the ship into a more fitting position to attack it or it can be used to travel more quickly as the Megalodon will drag ships around at astonishing speeds when harpooned. Alternatively, you could use it as a source of entertainment. It never gets old.
  • Skeleton Ships and Skeleton -operated land cannons will shoot at Megalodons. The Megalodon may then focus on the skeletons rather than the player. A Megalodon has no way of attacking skeletons that shoot at it from Island cannons, leaving them swimming and charging close to the island until the skeleton gets lucky enough to kill the Megalodon.
