Beneteau First 20

  • By Jen Brett

first 20 yacht

Just shy of 21 feet, the Beneteau First 20 is the smallest boat in this builder’s lineup. But don’t let the size fool you. The First series is the performance-sailing line from Beneteau USA , and like the First 20’s larger siblings, this boat is designed for a good turn of speed. And going with the theory that the easier a boat is to sail, the more likely you are to do so, things have been kept simple. As an updated version of the popular Beneteau First 211, the First 20 has dual rudders, an all-new backstay-less rig, and flies a large square-topped mainsail and 100-percent roller-furling headsail. This Finot-Conq design has higher freeboard than a pure sportboat, which will keep you drier, but still has a modern, sharp look. The First 20 comes standard with a fiberglass bowsprit for flying an asymmetric spinnaker.

beneteau first 20

I’ve always thought that when I’m done with big cruising boats, I’d love to have a simple trailer-sailer, and the First 20 (with a base price of $37,700) would fit that bill. The lifting keel and fold-down mast fit nicely on a trailer, and with a weight of less than 3,000 pounds, the First 20 can be towed by typical trucks and SUVs, opening up your cruising range to include any number of inland lakes and waterways. Try doing that with a full-size cruising boat.

The cabin is weekend-getaway ready with a double V-berth—it can be separated from the saloon with a privacy curtain—and two decent-sized quarter berths, a small sink, and a portable toilet.

Beneteau’s lively little First 211 trailer-sailer was a huge hit when it was launched in 1998, and it has remained popular through several iterations.  The latest is the First 20, with an all-new rig boasting a square-topped mainsail that should give its already sprightly performance some extra sizzle.

An evolution of the First 210, it remains fresh and smart even after more than twenty years. True to its timeless concept, more agressive and sporty looking, the First 20 has been updated and it is the best compromise in its category between safety, performance and comfort. Designed by finot-conq, its full yet sleek hull shape remains a reference for its stability. Its self-supporting rig allow a generous sail plan with a square top mainsail, a code zero and an optional asymmetrical spinnaker. The twin rudders and a chain locker are more highlights of this most enjoyable boat.

First20_INT_01

Always more habitable and comfortable, the First 20 did away with the bulkheads. Replacing the mast pillar with a structure integrated in the deck, there is no equivalent to this coastal cruiser's sense of inner space. The interiors are well lit thanks to the deck hatch, and featrue four berths and numerous stowage spaces.

Beneteau First 20

Beneteau First 20

The First 20

With over 2300 boats sailing worldwide since the introduction of the First 210 and First 21.7s, the success story continues with the First 20 !

One heck of a number that has continuously evolved these last twenty years and more, with a touch of insolence that has kept it young.  The First 20 has become more aggressive and stylish. Her look is more modern and in her class she offers the best balance between safety, performance and habitability. This classic small boat enjoys playing in the big league in all weather.

The First 20 has a harmonious and high-performing Finot-Conq hull that proves a model of stability. Thanks to an unstayed mast she features a generous sail plan with a square-top mainsail, 2016 code zero and asymmetric spinnaker on option. Yachtsmen are keen on the twin rudder helm and the chain locker. To increase the  First Twenty 's speed and performance all the more, she has been equipped with a rigging that will perpetuate her appeal, with a square-top mainsail and genoa whose area is greater, and a self-supporting mast without a stay. Thanks to this new rigging, which frees the lower shrouds, access to the fore is no longer hindered, making circulation on deck much easier. This is particularly appreciable on a boat of this size.To adhere to the trend that favours asymmetric sails, the First Twenty standard is equipped with a polyester bow sprit. . A completely new interior with more living space, more stowage and light wood finishes… and a new deck layout, with even more comfortable coamings !

Increasingly habitable and comfortable, the interior has done away with bulkheads. By replacing the mast prop with a structure built into the deck, this coastal cruiser offers a feeling of interior space second to none. Inside she is bathed in light by the deck hatch, and generously spacious with four berths and many storage spaces. She suits a wide variety of programmes.

More than ever before, the smallest of the FIRST family is a big cruising yacht with plenty of style ! Fun and a high-performer, this 6.50 m cruiser embraces a racing yet reassuring style. This unanimously acclaimed sailing yacht is small in size but has terrific qualities and she is loved because she is affordable and very easy to use.

Description

Beneteau First 20 sailing can be a good choice for those looking for a boat for short coastal voyages with the family or in a small group. This boat is also perfectly execute the role of first boat. Despite its modest dimensions (length 6,4 m) First 20 has a set of characteristics inherent rather racing boat grotto with a rectangular top, two rudders and a hull that provides speed and good stability. Design Beneteau First 20 was done by Finot Conq & Associates. The portfolio is the last known boat that participated in the famous krugosvetka — Hugo Boss, Generali, as well as yachts of class Mini-Transat. Weighing in at 1.2 tonnes, this yacht is easy to be transported on a trailer, so the owner is not restricted in the choice of areas to travel. In addition, the presence of the trailer eliminates the need for a permanent place at the pier. The boat is equipped with a lifting centerboard, so to put it in the water is not difficult. However, as to travel on shallow waters, and to come as close to the shore — draught boats with raised centerboard is only 70 cm cabin can sleep up to 4 people. The bathroom is not provided, but there is a place for portable toilets. Rigging, except the mainsail and headsail to spin, includes Spinnaker and/or gennaker.

Aug. 20, 2024: A second crane barge, the 250-foot Columbia...

The Columbia NY, a 250-foot crane barge with 140-foot boom, and the Thomas D Whitte, a coastal towing tug, arrived on Saturday, according to VesselFinder, a marine traffic site. Recovery efforts are expected to begin as early as Wednesday, according to Steven Newes,  senior vice president of Donjon Marine Co., the New Jersey-based firm contracted to salvage the LoveBug and deliver it to underwriters and its owner.

The tug boat’s arrival comes three weeks after the LoveBug overturned sailing south on the Chesapeake Bay from Annapolis. The yacht currently rests in about 10 to 12 feet of water on its starboard, or right, side between Beverly Beach and Shady Side.

The Farrell 256, a 200-foot crane barge with a 120-foot boom, and the Meagan Ann, a coastal towing tug, were the first vessels to arrive last week. The Farrell 256 will be used to rig the LoveBug with slings, Newes said last week. The Columbia NY will then roll and lift it to an upright position. Water inside the yacht will need to be pumped out.

The Italian-built yacht, which could be chartered at a weekly rate ranging from $110,000 to $125,000 , was not operating as a charter when it overturned, Hunter Dortenzo, spokesperson for the Maryland Natural Resources Police, said earlier this month. Following a mayday call, the Coast Guard found five people safe when they arrived.

Both the Natural Resources Police and the National Transportation Safety Board are conducting separate investigations. When the results will be released is unclear, Dortenzo said. The NTSB’s investigation is underway, according to Keith Holloway, a spokesperson for the board.

In the days after the LoveBug capsized, a slight oil sheen was visible on the water around the vessel. Two oil booms were placed around the yacht. No additional pollution has been reported, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher Bokum said on Aug. 9.

Search Resumes for British Mogul and 5 Others After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily

The body of the vessel’s cook was recovered while divers searched the hull of the Bayesian for passengers, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday for six missing passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — of a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.

Twenty-two people were on board the 180-foot British-flagged sailing yacht, the Bayesian, which was anchored near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent storm.

Fifteen people who managed to get to a raft were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship. The body of the yacht’s cook, identified by news outlets as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was recovered on Monday. But several people are still unaccounted for, according to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Those still missing are Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur; his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Mr. Lynch was acquitted of fraud in a U.S. trial in June, ending a high-profile, decadelong legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett for $11 billion.

Mr. Lynch and the others went missing days after Mr. Lynch’s co-defendant at the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said in a statement.

Prosecutors in the Italian city of Termini Imerese, east of where the yacht sank, are opening a formal investigation into the yacht’s sinking. Reached by telephone, the chief prosecutor declined to comment.

The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late that night as crews found themselves limited to the bridge deck and items like furnishings “obstructing passage,” the firefighters’ corps wrote on social media .

When divers resumed the search on Tuesday, ships trawled the waters near the site, the corps said in a statement. The Italian Coast Guard also said in a statement that search operations were “continuing unabated,” with the deployment of helicopters. There was no evidence that gasoline was leaking from the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

The yacht was lying on its right side in about 165 feet of water, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could stay underwater for only about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters’ corps.

Divers were seeking a safe point of access to the vessel’s cabins. “Obviously, everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said, adding that the divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”

The firefighters’ corps said in a statement that it was impossible to verify whether people were inside the hull.

Mr. Cari said that several divers had been part of the search-and-rescue operations when the Costa Concordia, a cruise liner, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people. It is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in modern Italian history.

“It’s like the Costa Concordia, but much smaller,” Mr. Cari said in a telephone interview, comparing the search operations. “In the Costa Concordia, we came across many obstacles but we somehow were able to overcome them. Here, the obstacles block the passages and have to be removed.” He added, “This makes it more difficult.”

Crews were also trying to raise the yacht, which experts will examine to try to determine why it sank. Until then, experts can only hypothesize what happened.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which picked up the Bayesian’s 15 survivors, said in an interview that when the wind picked up around 4 a.m. Monday, the Bayesian was about 490 feet behind his vessel. Once the wind wound down, he said, he could not see the yacht anymore.

“My theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” Mr. Borner said.

Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, said: “Now I imagine that a whole series of lawsuits will be triggered, obviously to ascertain whether there is any responsibility, as always happens very unpleasantly in these situations.” He said, however, that in this case, responsibility might be hard to determine. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he added.

Several fishermen told Italian news outlets that they had witnessed a waterspout. Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said they were relatively common in the Mediterranean, though their occurrence and intensity are unpredictable.

“Until one actually forms, you can’t start telling people where it is,” Mr. Inness said, or “how to get out of the way.”

The inclement weather — with lightning intermittently streaking through the sky — made it hard to know exactly why the yacht sank. Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time the boat sank.

The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi. “Having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano. The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave,” he added.

He, too, cautioned that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Modern yachts are built to withstand meteorological events of reasonable intensity, and all international naval registers suggest that new ships be designed for higher waves and more frequent and extreme weather events.

But “this seems a case of an unreasonable extreme event,” said Emilio Fortunato Campana, an expert in Naval Hydrodynamics at Italy’s National Research Council. “In that case, no ship is 100 percent safe,” he added. “I think the Titanic showed that nothing is unsinkable.”

Newly released CCTV footage has shown the moment the Bayesian superyacht was engulfed by a suspected waterspout.

Six passengers onboard the boat , including tech tycoon  Mike Lynch , 59, his daughter Hannah, 18, and chairman of Morgan Stanley international Jonathan Bloomer, remain missing after the yacht sank early Monday morning.

The blurry footage shows the lights of the distant boat seen from a marina as rain batters the vessel.

Follow Metro.co.uk’s live blog for latest updates on the Bayesian yacht sinking

Suddenly, the lights disappear, and the boat is no longer visible. Local Giornale Di Sicilia said: ‘In just sixty seconds – says the owner of the villa – you can see the ship disappear.

‘Of about twenty cameras installed in the house, only one was not disturbed by the wind and rain. You can clearly see what is happening.

‘There was nothing that could be done for the boat. It disappeared in a very short time.’

CTV shows superyacht battered by storm as local says it 'vanished in 60 secs' HORRIFYING CCTV video shows the moment the Bayesian superyacht is engulfed by the storm that would sink it.

A total of 15 other passengers, including Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, have been rescued so far while one person, the boat’s chef, has been found dead.

Emergency responder Luca Cari told Italian daily  Giornale Di Sicilia  divers can stay underwater for a maximum of 12 minutes, so the searches are being carried out for 10 minutes per dive.

According to reports, Mr Lynch and the group were on holiday celebrating after Mr Lynch was acquitted of fraud in June following a high-profile court case over the company’s sale.

The Italian Coastguard believes Mike Lynch and five other missing people may still be inside the sunken yacht, a spokesman said.

Vincenzo Zagarola told the PA news agency this was the working theory of officials on Sicily because it is believed the boat sank quickly and search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results.

He said: ‘We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea.

‘Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours.

‘Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly.

‘We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.’

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Mike Lynch remains missing after a luxury yacht sank off of Sicily's coast. Lynch, who sold his tech firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, had recently been acquitted of fraud charges related to the sale.

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

A rescue boat of the Italian Coast Guard operates in Porticello near Palermo, on Tuesday, a day after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Specialist divers launched a fresh search for six people, including U.K. tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

What is known about sinking of luxury yacht off coast of Sicily and those aboard Back to video

The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived.

Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat’s hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage.

Here’s what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board.

What happened?

Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-metre (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored.

Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported.

Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard.

Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 metres (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello.

Who was on board?

Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch, sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a U.S. fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.

Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defence lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11.

Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defence at Lynch’s trial.

Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity.

One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef.

What is the Bayesian?

The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-metre (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

The yacht’s name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy.

What is a waterspout?

Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water.

According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic.

Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website.

While scientists haven’t attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months. Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely.

Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer, and the United Nations’ panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20% higher than the global average.

What happens next?

As the search for the missing continues, authorities already have begun trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Prosecutors from the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation, as is normal in such events even when no suspects are identified. To date, they have not commented publicly.

The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.

— Corder reported from The Hague, Netherlands.

Panama deports 29 colombians on first us-funded flight.

Panama deported 29 Colombians on Tuesday on a flight that the government said was the first paid for by the United States  under an agreement  the two countries signed in July.

The  Colombians had entered Panama  illegally through the Darien jungle, a path used by more than 500,000 migrants headed north last year.

The vast majority of those were Venezuelans.

Colombian migrants, with their hands and feet handcuffed, line up to climb a plane at the Albrook Gelabert airport in Panama City on August 20, 2024, during their deportation.

But at least for now, Panama is not able to deport Venezuelans because the relationship between the countries has turned tense since Panama — like most other countries in the region -– has refused to recognize  the results of Venezuela’s election  giving President Nicolas Maduro another term.

The two countries have suspended their diplomatic relations.

Panama President José Raúl Mulino, who  took office July 1 , pledged to stop that migration flow, an interest he shares with the U.S. government.

Mulino had originally said the flights would be “voluntary” repatriations, but those deported Tuesday had criminal records, officials said.
