framura 3 yacht

The sea trial was pubblished in Superyacht 40 – Winter 2014

Codecasa’s sporty new flag ship, signed by Andre Bacigalupo and architects Della Role hit the water packed with sober elegance and oozing performance.

Following Codecasa’s successful 35S, 41S and 45S models which are all built in aluminium and are the first of the sports line this shipyard has built in aluminium and led the company to expand the line and complete the envisaged range, which is made up of splendid single decked motor yachts, with motor yacht “Framura 3”. This new 50 metre thus becomes Codecasa’s Sport line flag ship. The first of this line dates back to 2004 almost a decade ago with “Maria Carla” a 35S and with a further five models in various sizes perpetuating the stylistic features, spirit, construction materials and performance inherited from preceding models, but adding a whole deck given the extra length, rather than a simple flying bridge situated on the superstructure’s coachroof which was the case in smaller models. Andre Bacigalupo drew up project designs for every yacht and all the excellent hulls of the Sports line which guarantee thrilling performances also on 270 ton yachts.

framura 3 yacht

“Framura 3” was off the chocks and into the water on June 22nd 2013 at Codecasa’s new production premises situated along the Navicelli canal in Pisa which is the company’s latest acquisition extending over an area of 25,000 square metres of which 10,000 are taken up by 4 identical hangars of 2,500 square metres. Each one of these hangars is served by a travel lift capable of handling up to 670 tons. This site can host hulls and superstructures up to 80 metres, right from initial phases of production.

framura 3 yacht

Bacigalupo’s expertise in distributing the stylistic features inherited from the smaller yachts of the same line to the flagship “Framura 3” without exceeding in any one direction is remarkable. The lowered radar dome too sports an original aesthetic touch which is at the same time useful in providing shade to the al fresco dining area on the upper deck with a supporting almost “invisible” light awning when lunches are taken out there. This is a smart original and efficient solution with a characterising personality.

The lounge saloon area in the bow of this 50 metre, proportionally sports more generous spaces than those found on the 41S and 45S models with: a huge forward facing sofa, two coffee tables with small accompanying armchairs, two sun beds hosting up to three on each. The 50S also has access to the upper deck via two lateral passage ways along each side of the superstructure which can be taken from the stern area and from the helm controls station as well. In line with current trends “Framura 3” boasts a wide terrace which opens out from the topsides on the starboard side in the bow area which provides more air, light and an extra view to the gym which is part of the owner’s mega suite.

The interior layout in terms of colour schemes is classic with innovative solutions. The main deck hosts the saloon amidships, which is decorated with a beach scene painted by Salvatore Fiume, and the owner’s 75 square metre mega suite which is situated in the full beam area in the bows and comprises aside from his night quarters proper, an area to port which serves as dresser/make up spot, followed by a lounge with armchair and foot rest on the starboard side, two walk in wardrobes, as many bathrooms and the already mentioned gym for the opening terrace.

One of the innovative solutions is the fact there’s only one dining area inside and one out as mentioned earlier but both are situated on the upper deck level. The interior dining area sports Michele Cascella’s “Estate di Rapallo” a well known painter around the Tigullio Gulf. As per tradition, Codecasa’s helm controls stations are a happy harmonious synthesis made up of functionality, aesthetics and modernity and it’s no less in the case in point. Latest generation technology, and gauges are all lined and inserted into precious materials and controls are placed to be readily used with ease.

The lower deck’s layout is somewhat more unusual. The bow area houses guest cabins which entail one VIP full beam cabin, three twins, and a double. The crew’s quarters are placed amidships with four twin cabins and a single for the captain, a huge mess-room and galley. Further aft we come to a full beam garage which houses a 7 metre Castoldi Jet tender which can be launched and recovered on the port side via an adequate hatch. The stern area hosts an all in house engineered, impeccable and well defined splendid engine room. A lot of careful planning went into the making of this engine room for it to be aesthetically on par with this yacht’s overall beauty. It’s a place where one can work well even when in close contact with three 2,600 Hp MTU 16V 2000 M94 engines coupled to two Kamewa 80 S III hydro-jets and to one booster model 71 B III which push this 270 ton ship to a top speed of 28 knots. “Framura 3” can cover one thousand nautical miles at 18 knots with 45,000 litres of fuel, which for a planing yacht of this size is a notable result which highlights the excellence and efficiency of Bacigalupo’s hull design.

Architects Anna Maria and Franco Della Role as many times before provided the interior decor which in this instance was finalised after two years’ close work with the owner’s architect of choice. The decorative choices of this expert pair of architects that are on the light and bright side. They stand out for their simplified geometrics supplemented with the preciousness of the materials chosen where clean cut essential lines remove all that is superfluous without ever neglecting care and refinement throughout. Each area boasts contrasting lights and darks: the main deck saloon, the dining area on the upper deck, the owner’s mega suite as in the five guest cabins all sport the same light oak opposed to dark wenge wood essences and the neutral shades of fabrics and upholstery materials are occasionally revived with isolated splashes of more intense colours which provide verve to each area.

framura 3 yacht

“Framura 3” is therefore an excellent and happy mix between opposites, in terms of architecture, decor, and engineering. The exteriors offer intense aggressive yet light sinuous lines and a highly performing speed of 28 knots guaranteed by the three engines and Ship Dynamics zero speed gyro. stabilisers ensure great comfort when lying to an anchor while the originality of the interior layout blends well with the careful study of the guest areas and passages, leading to them and to the crew quarters which underscore the sort of comfort, and liveability this Codecasa S line flagship offers, thus making any cruise all the more pleasant. With four models in the S line from 35 to 50 metres, Codecasa can now fully satisfy every demand and expectation within the sport motor yacht range with yachts that are undoubtedly also elegant and comfortable. BAYESIAN TRAGEDY

The last 16 minutes of the ‘Bayesian’: a timeline of the sinking of the yacht in Sicily

Italy’s corriere della sera has obtained access to the final 16 minutes of the bayesian, with a detailed reconstruction of its tragic final moments from 3:50 a.m. to 4:06 a.m, when it sank..

Italy’s Corriere della Sera has obtained access to the final 16 minutes of the Bayesian, with a detailed reconstruction of its tragic final moments from 3:50 a.m. to 4:06 a.m, when it sank.

On Friday, search teams located the body of the daughter of British tycoon Mike Lynch . Hannah Lynch was the last person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian , the yacht that sank last Monday off the coast of Palermo, Sicily.

The luxury vessel was carrying 22 people on that fateful night of August 19. Of those on board, 12 were passengers, while 10 were crew members. Although most survived, six people were reported missing in the aftermath : the previously mentioned British businessman Mike Lynch; his daughter, Hannah Lynch; Jonathan Bloomer, the director of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; American lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo. Over the past few days, their bodies have been found inside the Bayesian, at rest on the bottom of the sea at a depth of 160 feet.

Luxury yacht Bayesian sinks in storm

The luxurious 184-foot yacht, flying the British flag, was built at the Perini Navi Viareggio shipyard in February 2008. The yacht boasted the world’s tallest aluminium mast, measuring 246 feet.

In addition to the storm and the powerful gusts of wind that contributed to the vessel’s destabilization and sinking, experts have also pointed to human error as a possible cause of the Bayesian’s demise. There is talk of a chain of mistakes, including open hatches and windows, improper alignment of the vessel, and poor positioning of the keel, the counterweight to the soaring mast.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera (link in Italian) has obtained details of the final 16 minutes of the Bayesian , thanks to the AIS (Automatic Identification System) tracking system, which links a ship’s onboard instruments to coastal stations and accurately tracks the vessel.

Final moments of the Bayesian

In this case the final moments ran from 3:50 a.m. to 4:06 a.m., the time of its tragic end.

A waterspout strikes the Bayesian. Despite being anchored, the tracking system shows a path that visually resembles a scribble: the yacht moves forward and backward, then side to side, and then once more forward and backward.

The anchor gives way, leaving the yacht fully exposed to the storm.

By this time, the yacht is taking on so much water that it becomes unmanageable. The power goes out, indicating that water has reached either the generator area or the engine room.

At 4:03 a.m., there is another slight change in the yacht’s trajectory. By 4:05 a.m., it vanishes from the tracking system after drifting about 400 yards. Surveillance footage recorded from a villa near the Porticello harbor corroborates this moment.

At 4:06 a.m., the EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon), a type of GPS that acts as an emergency beacon, automatically sends a distress signal to the Cospas-Sarsat satellite station in Bari, managed by the Coast Guard. The yacht, as reported by the 15 survivors, went down bow-first in a vertical position before coming to rest on the seafloor, starboard side down.

During these 16 terrifying minutes, 15 people managed to escape. The cook, Recaldo Thomas, died trying to get out. The other six, who were reported missing and have now been found dead, fought for their lives until the very end.

50m Codecasa Motor Yacht Framura 3 Sold

The 49.9 metre motor yacht Framura 3 , jointly listed for sale by Fraser with Edmiston & Company , has been sold with the buyer introduced by IYC in Monaco.

Built in aluminium by Italian yard Codecasa to a design by Andrea Bacigalupo , Framura 3 was delivered in 2013. Designers Franco and Anna Della Role worked closely with the original owner to produce a classically-styled interior accommodating 12 guests in six cabins comprising a master suite with a sea balcony, VIP suite, double and three twins. All guest cabins have entertainment centres, television screens and en suite bathroom facilities while the crew quarters sleep nine staff.

The owner of Framura 3 requested large, light spaces for the interiors, generous outdoor areas and considerable power to allow speedy crossings. Obviously, to obtain the power required by the owner it was necessary to contain the weight, even though the three MTU engines are extremely powerful. The yard took this into account and showed its ability to construct with care, following careful procedures at each phase of the production, allowing a precise distribution of weight.

Her principal living space is a vast full-beam saloon located on the main deck. Sliding doors lead from the aft deck into an open-plan lounge separated into two seating areas by an entertainment centre. Large picture windows run the length of the salon providing panoramic ocean views while cruising.

A staircase leads from the main deck to the upper deck which boasts an elegant formal dining area for eight guests plus an upper pantry. Finished in the same bleached oak as the saloon, the dining area is connected to the galley via a dumb waiter for impeccable service while dining onboard. Her top speed is 26 knots and her power comes from three 2,600hp MTU 16V2000M94 diesel engines.

Framura 3 was asking €12,500,000 and will enter a period of refurbishment before becoming available for charter in the Mediterranean during summer 2020 with IYC.

Maker of bayesian yacht blames crew for ‘indescribable, unreasonable errors’ in doomed vessel’s sinking.

The CEO of the company that built the $40 million yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily this week has blamed the crew for the tragedy — saying they had 16 minutes and could have easily saved the seven who died.

“The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors,” Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, told Reuters of the Bayesian sinking Monday, killing seven of the 22 onboard.

“The impossible happened on that boat … but it went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell,” he said.

Mike Lynch wraps his arm around his teen daughter Hannah and both smile for a photo, on a sidewalk.

Blaming the crew for the “incredible mistake” of not being prepared for the storm, he said: “This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance.”

Costantino, whose company includes Perini Navi, the Italian high-end yacht maker that built the 183-foot superyacht in 2008, staunchly defended its construction — saying it had survived far more extreme storms during 22 years of trouble-free navigation.

Instead, he expressed horror that the crew was unable to save the seven who died — including the Bayesian’s owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

He said the crew had a 16-minute window before the craft sank — plenty of time to get everyone to safety.

“The torture lasted 16 minutes,” he told the Financial Times.

“It went down, not in one minute as some scientists have said. It went down in 16 minutes. You can see it from the charts, from the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking chart,” he said.

Constantino wears a navy suit , smiles and folds his arms while standing next to a model ship on display.

Additionally, doors and hatches should have been closed, and the keel should have been lowered to increase stability, among other safety measures, Costantino said.

Had correct procedures been followed, all passengers would have gone back to sleep after one hour, “and the next morning they would have happily resumed their wonderful cruise,” he added.

“The captain should have prepared the boat and put it in a state of alert and of safety.”

“Ask yourself — why were none of the Porticello fishermen out that night? A fisherman checks the conditions and a ship doesn’t? The disturbance was completely readable on all the weather maps. It was impossible not to know,” he said.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
  • British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

Bayesian had 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew — when it capsized and sank during a storm while anchored off the coast of northern Sicily.

Of those on board, 15 people — including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares — were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

Rescue divers located Lynch’s teen daughter Friday, the final missing person, the Italian coast guard said.

The bodies of the other dead passengers, including Lynch and New York attorney Christopher Morvillo, were recovered Wednesday and Thursday from inside the hull of the sunken yacht. Those on board were there to help Lynch celebrate his recent acquittal in a major US fraud trial.

Rescue boats search the waters off the coast of Porticello near the Sicilian city of Palermo on Aug. 23, 2024.

Meanwhile, Italian authorities launched a manslaughter investigation into what downed the $40 million yacht after it was struck by an intense storm early Monday, local media reported.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Termini Imerese had started making inquiries and was looking at a slew of offenses — including “shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable homicide against an unknown person,” sources told Palermo Today.
