Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: long beach yacht club celebrates 94th opening day.

long beach yacht club opening day

The weekend break from the stormy winter weather was idea timing for the Long Beach Yacht Club — which hosted its 94th opening day on Saturday, March 18, under blue skies.

“There is snow on the mountains and the bay is free of ice,” LBYC Junior Staff Commodore Jon Turigliatto announced as he kicked off the event.

A bagpiper led the contingent of staff commodores and spouses in an inspection of the yachts in Alamitos Bay’s Basin IV — and with that, the club’s yachting season was officially open.

Member’s sails and power boats were Tahiti-tied along the long dock. The “Med-moor/Tahiti tie” set up is where the stern is facing the dock. This makes boat hopping easier for guests.

The reminder of the day was spent visiting boats in the “open house” format.

There was a star-spangled banner saxophone performance by member Dr. Todd Forman, who also rocked part-time for iconic Long Beach band Sublime. These days his attention is on his medical practice.

Wilson High School surf team

When Todd Forman isn’t healing the sick or showing his patriotism with music, his focus is on family and their passion — including his son’s surfing skills.

“My son, Carter, started his freshman year on the Wilson surf team,” Forman, who swims daily and played water polo for Wilson, said in an email, “and it has been one of the most gratifying athletic experiences in our lives.”

The Wilson surf team experienced only one loss this season and were the league champions. They will move on to the State Championships this weekend, March 26-27, at Oceanside Harbor.

The team has been going through a resurgence in the past 4-5 years, Forman said.

Co-head coach Bryce Leisy was a member of the last Wilson team to win a State Championship and is credited with much of the group’s revival.

“We have a sponsored surfer on the team right now,” Leisy said in a text message. “And several have gone on to compete in professional level events. There have also been Wilson surf alumni who have gone on to judge at the highest level of the sport.”

The list of notable Wilson surfing alums includes:

  • The late Sophia Bartlow, U.S. Stand-Up Paddleboard Tour national title winner and California long/shortboard state champion.
  • Martin Cabada, multiple-time Mexi Logfest competitor (professional level contest) and World Surf League longboard judge.
  • Trey Martinho, multiple-time Mexi Logfest competitor who has been on the cover of surfing publication Tracks Magazine.
  • Adian Cruz, a Mexi Logfest competitor.
  • Sam Heck, a multiple-time Mexi Logfest competitor.

Leisy’s co-coach has also contributed to the team’s success.

“Antone (Tony) Martinho (a fellow water polo player and Wilson alum) used to coach the water polo team at Wilson and is a legend, as he won more championships then any other coach,” Forman said. “His youngest son was a surfer so he transitioned from water polo to surfing and became the head coach for at least the past 10 years.

“The values and attitudes toward comradery and competition and the love of the ocean and for surfing is unbelievable. Kids of all styles and attitudes are welcome to join the surf team,” Forman added. “Some are more competitive and (others) just want to have fun. And it’s OK to be either or both”

Forman also shared that a lifetime passion for being a waterman starts with having fun.

“The coaches feel that the kids are already winning if they’re out in the water catching waves,” Forman said. “(It’s) so refreshing in the Long Beach sports’ competitive environment to have coaches whose priority is for the kids to be safe and have fun!

“It’s no wonder why the team has gone from 20 kids to over 50 kids this year,” he added. “Both boys and girls compete for Wilson.”

Bart Hall show

The boating and fishing show that was previously known as the “Fred Hall” show is celebrating 75 years of outdoor recreation show production.

His son, Bart Hall, who is now the show’s namesake, is honoring the elder Hall, as well as his mother, Lois Hall, with the annual consumer sportfishing and boating show at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center at the end of this month and into early April.

“There is no template, there are no other shows like this,” Bart Hall said in a phone interview. “No wonder we are referred to as the Granddaddy of them all.”

Hall went on to say families can expect a full day of outdoor recreation by attending the event. There is the chance to shoot BB guns, practic archery, compete in a duck race and do some fly fish casting.

The Long Beach show runs from March 29 to April 2. The event runs from noon to 8 p.m. each day, except April 2, during which it runs from Noon to 5 p.m. It is the nation’s largest consumer sportfishing shows and one of the largest boat shows in the West.

One-day tickets are $20. Children 15 and under are free. Those 62 and older or who have military identification are $15 at the ticket window.

General admission tickets can be purchased at tixr.com/groups/barthallshows .

USRowing has announced the roster of those selected to represent the U.S. at the 2023 Pan American Games Qualification Regatta from April 15 to 19 in Concepción, Chile — and Long Beach is represented.

Long Beach’s own Madeleine Focht made the cut and will compete in both the women’s double sculls and women’s quadruple sculls

While the selection process for the qualification regatta began last November with the Pan American Games Trials, the roster wasn’t finalized until a week ago because of changes in the dates of the qualification regatta, according to USRowing.

The U.S. will have 12 boats competing in various events during the five-day regatta, including in the men’s and women’s single sculls, double sculls, lightweight double sculls, quadruple sculls, pair, and four. Only 20 athletes will make up this year’s roster.

THE WATER IS

Whether you are looking for an active on-the-water lifestyle the whole family can enjoy, are a competitive sailor, a recreational boater, or simply looking for a welcoming community that also happens to enjoy spectacular waterfront views...you’ve found it at Long Beach Yacht Club.

LBYC was formed to promote yachting and competitive sportsmanship on a world-class level – and for nearly 100 years our reputation has matched our mission. Sailing members take part year-round in regattas, invitationals, championships, trips and other events, and of course, access to our fleet of Catalina 37 One-Design racing yachts.  Don’t know how to sail? That’s okay, we offer learn-to-sail programs on our fleet of Soling sailboats that are also available for member use.

We take an all-inclusive and laid-back approach to what it means to be a yacht club, featuring a range of power and recreational boating programs, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking, fishing trips and travel...nearly any and every recreational activity you can enjoy on, in and around the water.

Our heated pool is a relaxed and relaxing Naples Island gathering spot for those who love to be in the water...as well as close to the water. From lap swimming to soaking up the sun, recreational activities to group lessons and more, this is an active family-friendly amenity that can be enjoyed year-round. We offer members and guests light dining menus, and locker rooms that feature showers and saunas.

Our clubhouse on Alamitos Bay is a casually refined destination that features some of the best views in Long Beach...and Southern California. Led by chefs with decades of experience, LBYC features a variety of menus — and a variety of venues, including our 225-foot private dock. In fact, every table is guaranteed to offer a spectacular visual presentation matched only by our culinary, cocktail and wine selections. From casual family meals to more formal dinners and breathtaking sunset celebrations, this is a private gathering spot that also feels remarkably like a home, away from home.

We regard the younger set as an important part of our Club as well, with both sailing and non-sailing programs for children from ages 4 to 17 years old. LBYC’s well-regarded Junior programs offer world-class sailing lessons, safety instruction and competitions in Sabots, CFJs and Lasers, and a range of fun year-round programs and summer camps led by experienced instructors and coaches.

LBYC is a lively, fun and inviting gathering place, defined by people who will always offer a warm smile, friendly conversation...and an invitation to the next adventure.

As an equity club, members are owners here, with a say in every decision about our operations and plans for the future. Club reciprocity also means our membership community extends to yacht clubs from just down the coast to around the world, fostering connections and friendships that extend across the years and across the oceans.

Long Beach Yacht Club

Long Beach Yacht Club, founded in 1929, gained international recognition through the Congressional Cup sailboat regatta. It originated with plans for a powerboat race between Long Beach and San Francisco. The race was to coincide with the San Francisco Motor Boat Show, promoting both the show and Northern California’s boating industry. Daniel M. Callis, Sr., an active Long Beach architect, played a pivotal role in establishing the club. The inaugural race covered 460 miles, from Long Beach to San Francisco, using a handicapping system. The winner received a trophy donated by Sir Thomas Lipton. Despite initial challenges, the success of this race led to the formation of the Long Beach Yacht Club.

Stories from Long Beach Yacht Club

In 1929, a group met at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, in an effort to secure support for a real Long Beach Yacht Club. Jonah Jones, Jr. convened a subsequent meeting with Long Beach businessmen interested in yachting, ultimately agreeing to form a real Long Beach Yacht Club. Richard Loynes, a renowned speedboat racer, became the first commodore. Despite the stock market crash, the new LBYC swiftly attracted 100 members, each paying $5 per year (kids paid $2.50). Within weeks, they organized a speedboat race from Long Beach to Avalon, and by February 1930, membership had grown to around 150.

In 1929, D. M. Callis became commodore at the Pacific Coast Club, attended by 125 people. Notable guests included commodores from the Catalina Island Yacht Club, California Yacht Club, and Los Angeles Yacht Club. The focus was on creating a yacht harbor in Long Beach and constructing a clubhouse. Discussions with Long Beach and Los Angeles County officials led to plans for the clubhouse once a harbor location was confirmed.

Using the Pacific Coast Club as its headquarters, discussions began with the City of Long Beach and County of Los Angeles regarding development in Alamitos Bay and plans were formulated to begin construction. Despite their efforts, Long Beach and Seal Beach agreed to construct a bridge over the San Gabriel River mouth in 1931, connecting Seal Beach to Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach. Unfortunately, this bridge restricted access for any vessels 14 feet or more in overhead clearance, hindering Alamitos Bay’s development as a significant yacht harbor for two decades.

In 1936, the first LBYC clubhouse was approved, sparking fundraising efforts and member contributions. By the start of the 1937 regatta season, the facilities were fully paid for. Located west of downtown Long Beach, the clubhouse stood a 2,000-foot stroll along a boardwalk from the shore. It featured moorings, a Star Boat dock and an anchorage area. While no boardwalk extended beyond the clubhouse, local lore suggests that young ladies enjoyed refreshing skinny dips in the secluded L-shaped end of the mooring field.

As the war years approached, LBYC faced changes. Records differ on whether the club sold or donated its first clubhouse to the Sea Scouts in 1939. However, newspaper articles indicate that the facility remained with the club until at least 1941. Despite losing the clubhouse, yachting and social activities persisted amidst the global events unfolding. World War II significantly impacted club members’ lives and boating activities. During this time, Alamitos Bay emerged as a marina and eventually became home to the Long Beach Yacht Club’s second clubhouse.

Prominent individuals associated with LBYC had been involved in Alamitos Bay’s development since the 1920s. However, the second clubhouse could only be built after protecting the bay from floods and constructing the marina. Members’ determined efforts secured an initial lease for the clubhouse site in March 1959. The lease expanded in January 1960, encompassing the clubhouse building and access to Basin 4 slips. By September 1969, the lease extended to 2020. On June 1, 1960, groundbreaking for the current clubhouse on Appian Way took place, with dedication ceremonies held on December 16, 1960. LBYC was now poised for rapid expansion and global recognition within the yachting community.

LBYC thrives on the constant activities provided for the members that include racing, yachting, fishing, diving, swimming, social programs and youth activities. The club actively participates in community outreach using Catalina 37s. Notable activities include the Marcedes Lewis Regatta, where six Boys and Girls Club teams compete. High school students from Jordan High Schools sail in The Panthers at Sea, and Boys and Girls Club kids race in the Wet Wednesday events. The Patriot Regatta draws participation from all five branches of the armed forces—Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. Youth programming is a highlight, offering sailing and swimming lessons for little ones, swim team meets, and competitive regattas. As LBYC looks ahead, its leaders balance tradition and innovation to serve members.

Long Beach Yacht Clubs Open Doors to the Public

By Rob Thomas | June 13, 2019

long beach yacht club opening day

Seal Beach Yacht Club

From learn-to-sail days and open houses to potluck dinners, Southern California yacht clubs and groups are presenting opportunities for the public to learn more about what they offer. John Caldwell, Commodore at Seal Beach Yacht Club, suggests trying a club on for size by attending a dinner or joining a cruise.

In Long Beach, Calif., several yacht clubs and groups require membership for entry, The Grunion Gazette reported. John Caldwell, Commodore at Seal Beach Yacht Club (SLBYC), said in many cases, it is because of their tax status as a not-for-profit.

But there are ways to join activities before committing to membership—generally by establishing your guest status with the club by calling prior to visiting, The Grunion reported. Caldwell suggests trying a club on for size by attending a dinner or joining a cruise.

Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s Commodore David Schack said his club hosted an open house on June 8. The open house included membership incentives, tours of the clubhouse, sailboat rides and complementary food and drinks.

“We have a couple of great ways non-members can get involved; both involve our sailing program,” he told The Grunion . “One way is through our junior sailing program where we will be offering learn-to-sail programs through to advanced sailing. New this year is an adventure program which will include kayaking, paddleboarding and fun sailing days including pirate day, destination sailing, try-a-boat, and a lot more fun stuff.

“The other way non-members can get involved is through our adult learn-to-sail program, which is a great way adults can get out on the water, learn how to sail, and have fun.”

Shoreline Yacht Club (SYC) Commodore 2019 Einar Lorentzen said most of their activities are not open to the public, but they have two items that are: a pancake breakfast on July 4 and this summer’s beginning sailing classes taught on Cal 20s, The Grunion reported.

Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club (CBYC) mostly caters to boat owners in the adjacent marina near the Golden Sails—and the club welcomes guests who are interested in joining. Commodore Jay Warner told The Gunion , “We have many activities planned ranging from golf tournaments, a Del Mar Opening Day trip, multiple club cruises to Catalina Island as well as Dana Point, Cabrillo, and Newport Beach.

“We have coordinated a September weekend trip to Cabrillo Way Marina the same weekend as the Los Angeles Harbor Boat Show. In October, we get together and cruise out for the Great Pacific Air Show in the waters off Huntington Beach. These are just a few of the events and activities we have on the 2019 calendar.”

Long Beach Singles Yacht Club welcomes guests. According to Commodore Bruce Clark, “The next dock party is on gangway 22 on June 15. “Bring your own beverage and a potluck item that will serve 10. Often members bring musical instruments and a combo plays old time songs.”

Long Beach Rowing Association is hosted “Learn to Row” day June 1, The Grunion reported. The free event included a tour of the boat house and history of the club and the 1932 Olympic Marine Stadium, expert instruction on the rowing machine on how to refine your stroke, and an opportunity to get in a boat and row in a sculling (two oars) or sweep (one oar) boat on the water.
