Carbon Construction

Carbon fibre construction equals a strong, very light, extremely rigid platform integral for safe and efficient sailing. Designed with short handed sailing in mind, the deck layout on the HH50 has been carefully configured with all sail controls at the helms to maximise ease of use.

Performance Cruising

Though simple to sail, the HH50 is far from subdued. ‘Raceboat in disguise’ technology abound, and equal to wind speed performance is the norm. After days or weeks of exhilarating offshore passage making, fully retractable curved daggerboard allow you to secure the best pot in the anchorage and explore the dreamy shallows.

Saloon and Cockpit

The HH50 features a spacious general arrangement. The large saloon offers a generous sized galley to starboard with an island just outboard of centerline. Seating for six around a large dining table and a dedicated navigation station are to port. When at anchor the sail handling area easily converts to an a comfortable forward facing seating area. An attractive eyebrow around the cabin top adds to the aggressive styling but is very practical in creating much needed sun shade in the salon as well as creating a safety hand hold when walking the side decks. The aft cockpit is perfect for entertaining: a settee and table set the stage for dining al fresco, made complete by an integrated wet bar and barbecue.

• HH 50: Best Luxury Cruiser

At the upper end of the cost equation for the 2021 Boat of the Year contestants, there were three boats with a price tag north of seven figures, which in our viewpoint puts them into Luxury Cruiser territory. The Southerly 480 was the outlier of the three—very cool and versatile, but with older if proven technology—which steered us into a lively discussion of the merits of two truly state-of-the-art sailboats, the HH 50 and the Hylas 60. So the question was, how do you choose between excellent and exquisite?

The similarities, apart from their rarified sticker prices, were rather striking. Both built in the Far East. Both with similar Boat of the Year pedigrees, having each notched victories in previous contests. Both marketed similarly. Both with strong support systems for buyers, including the services of pro sailors who guide you through the first days of ownership. When you buy either a Hylas or an HH, you’re also buying into a quite exclusive family.

Of course, there’s also a huge difference. One boat has a single hull, the other a pair. Neither is right, or wrong. So it comes down to personal taste and sailing style and ambitions. Island hopping or ocean crossing? Blue water or backwaters? At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with either one of these boats. If you have the wherewithal to buy one of them and you’re a good sailor and confident in your ability to handle a big boat—and these are both that—then who are we to say that one is a better choice than the other?

“I do think that these are two very good, very different expressions of cruising luxury,” Murphy said. “They represent the pinnacle of cruising luxury in 2021 as we know it.”

We couldn’t in good conscience choose between the two, so we didn’t. Each is named 2021′s Best Luxury Cruiser. Let’s delve deeper, starting with the HH 50.

“As I said earlier,” Murphy continued, “the HH is one of the two best-built boats in the fleet. Unlike the X40, it employs thermal form construction, which means they take flat panels of Corecell foam core and heat it up to make the complex shapes of the hull so that there are no slits or kerfs in the foam. In the simplest terms, you’re using that flat sheet to construct complex curves, and then you’re using the best resin available, which is epoxy, in the laminate. This is infused epoxy construction, post-cured after the fact. So this is a very, very high-quality hull.”

The big question: how do you choose between excellent and exquisite?

“This may have been one of the more interesting boats I’ve climbed aboard in terms of some of the gear choices that the owner made and the willingness of the builder to go along with them,” Pillsbury said. “For instance, the auxiliary engine was a Beta Marine diesel. And on earlier HHs, I kind of scratched my head as to whether a couple could really handle a big cat like this. But on this boat, a couple without a whole lot of big-boat sailing experiences was handling it just fine. The Jeffa steering was rack-and-pinion and very sweet. The self-tacking jib certainly made the boat a joy to sail upwind. And for a cat, it could actually sail very close to the wind. I thought the daggerboard controls were brilliant. It was just a simple continuous-line Antal winch. Not a much could go wrong there.”

Designed by the veteran cat designers Melvin & Morrelli, who brought the Gunboat line into existence, with the HH 50 they’ve moved on from the forward cockpit that distinguished those boats, and brought the helms aft and outboard, further establishing yet another trend in the moving target that is boat design. The visibility is outstanding, and the sensation of steering this boat, even in light airs, is otherworldly.

This is sailing, quite frankly, that was once unimaginable in a cruising boat. But to paraphrase Teri Hatcher on an old episode of Seinfeld , as far as the HH 50 is concerned, it’s real. And it’s spectacular.

To the untrained eye, the Ocean 50 could pass for the HH50. Look a little closer and you’ll see one helm instead of two and that it's a keel boat instead of daggerboards. Look at pictures of the boat under construction and it will sport light green and tan e-glass vs. dark gray carbon fiber.

The boat has the same hull shape as the HH50 with the addition of a bit more transom length and performance keels in lieu of daggerboards.

Standard equipment includes an aluminum mast which also helps drive the cost closer to more of the other e-glass offerings available today. Where the Ocean 50 differs from the aforementioned boats is that size for size the Ocean 50 is designed to outperform them.

In 50 feet you have the length to carry the cruising gear required for extended cruising. You also have the waterline for speed too. The Ocean 50 is a performance boat and you need to resist the temptation of putting a Volkswagen in the cockpit. But you can add a decent RIB dinghy, scuba gear, several sails, and more than just crackers and oatmeal for your provisions.

Head high, go fast

The solution to making familiar standard issue catamarans go faster might be adding a skyscraper mast to it. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to head closer to the wind. There are several factors that come into play to allow a cat to point. The Ocean 50 has them. For those of you wrestling with mono vs cat then one less thing on your decision tree is sacrificing upwind ability. Sure its not performance monohull numbers, but your VMG will still put those boats behind you and over the horizon.

If you get the chance to see one of our upcoming videos on the Ocean 50, study the bottom. Then poke around a boatyard with catamarans and study their underbellies. You’ll see the difference. The Ocean 50 is all in the business of performance. Just remember not to carry that VW. Just the bikes. OK, maybe electric bikes. We’ll let that one fly.

HH 50 owner’s review

Many thanks to SV Lickety, an HH50, for sharing their thoughts on their beautiful catamaran.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your HH50 catamaran. We are two beginner sailors, this is our first boat. We live aboard with our two dogs, Ella and Essy. We plan to see as much of the world as we can.

Why did you choose the HH50? Was it the finish, the performance or the upwind performance for example? We wanted a boat that is both comfortable and has good performance. We want the best of both sides.

When was she launched? How was the build process? January 2021. The build process happened during covid with no delays. It was transparent at every step. Excellent communication.

What’s the best thing about her? Everything about this boat is the best. It’s truly exceptional, beyond our expectations.

If there was one thing that you would change, what would that be? Or wouldn’t you change anything? A performance boat, at this level, takes skill to sail. We love the challenge. She expects us to be good. Be ready to become a good sailor on this boat. She requires it. No lazy sailors allowed!

Does she carry weight well, or do you have to be careful to not overload her with gear? We don’t overload her. It’s our preference. Other owners carry more than we do. She can handle a lot. We just prefer not to. We do have plenty of toys, though!

What are the “Must Have” Options buying new in your opinion? eg Sails, watermaker, generator, solar, carbon options, push button sheet controls There is never enough solar or red wine. Load up on both! All electric galley is a no-brainer.

What are the “Nice to Have Options”? I LOVE our real teak deck in the cockpit. It’s more of a ‘must’ than a ‘ nice’. Sea Deck on the top decks might be a nice addition. It’s not simple to add it later as I assumed.

Which options did you “pass” on? We have the extra length on our longeron for an additional foresail. We held off getting the sail until we had more experience. That was a good decision. We now have a better idea of what we need up there.

How are the electrics, plumbing etc. Can you give us an idea of how you set your power system up, amount of solar, hydrogeneration, lithium batteries etc We have 2400w of solar, three 180amp at 24v lithium batteries.

Is she easy to maintain? Servicing engines, standing rigging etc She is easier to maintain than expected. That said, she’s a boat and we do work hard to keep her perfect.

Is she easy to sail short-handed? To shorten sail? Is the running rigging complex? Do all the lines lead back to the helms, for example? Can you give us an idea of your sail plan. Self tacking jib or overlapping for example. We have 3 foresails. (We plan to purchase one more.) We started with a self tacking jib, an overlapping solent, and a light wind reacher. Two people can easily sail her. It’s possible to single hand her if necessary but much easier with two.

What’s she like in heavy weather / a blow / big seas We have sailed her in a wide range of conditions over the last year and 4 months. We have run from hurricanes, crossed from Virginia to the Bahamas, gone around Hatteras three times. We just crossed the Atlantic in her, sailing in some big weather that most of the boats around us ran from. We saw winds consistently over 40KT in 4M waves. She performed beautifully, dancing through it. (We were double reefed and had the jib out.) I don’t recommend anyone pushing their boat beyond their skill level but once you gain the skills, this boat won’t be the thing that holds you back. Only you will be.

How are the helm positions. Good in weather? How is the visibility when docking? The helms are incredible. The prime seats on the boat. Easy to dock and drive from. Originally I didn’t understand having two helms, now I swear by them.

How does she sail in light winds? She likes wind. On a close reach she sails at about half wind speed. Less on other angles. Hence we want another, larger, foresail.

How does she sail close hauled? How high does she point to true in a good sea state? She points at 30 degrees in ideal conditions.

Typically, what’s your average speed on passage? What´s the top speed you have logged surfing? Average 8. Top 20.

What’s she like under power? Speed, manouevrability? She maneuvers well under power. We have two 38s so we motor at 6 for the most efficient fuel use.

Is she easy to dock? She is light and can be squirrely in big wind. Oh, get a bow thruster and all is easy.

What is she like at anchor? We love to be on anchor for the privacy. Our anchor and rode have held us in many different conditions without fail.

What’s she like when it´s raining hard? Our cockpit gets some dripping in heavy rain. The rest of the boat is always dry.

I s she comfortable down below? Cabins/saloon/galley/heads. Can you give us an idea of the configuration you went for? We have the owners version. The amount of storage is huge. Comfort is high. Our shower is large. Our two guest cabins have their own heads, share a comfortable sized shower that is accessible from each of their own private entry.

How is the finish of the interior? Does she creak under sail? No creaks under sail. This all-carbon boat is built like a rock.

What is your favourite spot on the boat? The helm. On top of the world!

Is she good for hosting guests? She is a party boat. The stereo, lighting, layout is great for having guests. Everyone who comes on agrees with a WOW! as they enter.

What kind of modifications have you done and why? To keep costs down we didn’t do a lot of modifications. The M&M design doesn’t really need it.

Any plans for further customisation? We might do a removable enclosure on our cockpit.

If you were to swap her for another boat, what would that be? Or maybe you wouldn’t swap her? Probably won’t need to swap. This boat is perfect for us. But if she ever starts to bore us I do have my eye on that HH60!

How is the after sales service from HH? Unmatchable after service. The people who work for HH are the best. How would you rate the Value for Money of an HH50, bearing in mind future re-sale potential, quality, price and so on. Unmatchable. Period. My husband is a numbers guy. We don’t buy anything that isn’t a good investment. How many boats are a good investment?!
