The Hobie Tandem Island Mirage trimaran sailing kayak is the two-seater big brother to the Adventure Island (AI), which was designed and built by Hobie due to popular demand. The ‘TI’ as it is otherwise known is bigger, faster, more stable and offers greater carrying capacity and versatility. The TI is a tandem trimaran sailing vessel that is easily the most capable Hobie Miragedrive boat, partly because it can also be used as a kayak and Polynesian-style outrigger as well as a sailing trimaran. The ability to configure the TI to suit the conditions on the day makes it a highly capable craft that can do more in a greater variety of conditions.

Whether you’re into maximizing your kayak fishing adventures or simply just love to sail (but cannot afford, store, transport or bother with a larger Hobie catamaran ) the Tandem Island commands your attention

Used as a kayak the Hobie Tandem Island is the fastest tandem model in Hobie’s fleet, as well as being the most stable. As an outrigger it is even more stable and doesn’t suffer too much from a loss of speed. When there is little or no wind the TI can be used to great effect in either configuration, ideal for touring, sight-seeing, kayak fishing and camping trips. When the wind is blowing, however, the TI absolutely shines in it’s default state as a trimaran. Light winds will move the TI along at a steady pace and stronger winds will push it along with eyebrow raising speeds, the respective experience ranging from serenely relaxing to downright thrilling.

With Kick-Up Fins you can explore shallow waters without a care. These fins automatically kick up on impact and adjust back when you resume pedalling.

2 x COCKPIT STORAGE

An 8″ twist and seal hatch, dual cup holders and dual mesh stowage pockets in each cockpit provide easy access and safe stowage for the things you reach for most. An extra 8″ twist and seal hatch on the rear deck means you’re never short of stowage options. 

2 x VANTAGE CT SEATS

2 x Vantage seating systems provide the comfort needed for long stretches out on the water. The seat-back, bottom, height, and lumbar support are all easily adjustable. Enjoy breathability, infinite flexibility and better visibility along with state-of-the-art design and 4-way adjustability for more comfort in the cockpit or on the beach. 

RETRACTABLE OUTRIGGERS

Hobie’s AKA arm system allows the two AMA floats or outriggers to be folded into the hull for easy transport on a trailer, or simple removal for car-topping and storage. The AKA arms mount the 2 paddles that come as standard or add Trampolines for extra comfort and crew capacity.

COMPLETE SAILING KIT

Everything you need for high-performance sailing comes standard with the Tandem Island including; Two-piece carbon composite mast, kick-up daggerboard for upwind performance, patented vertically battened roller furling sail, and all lines and hardware for sail control from both seats. An optional Spinnaker Kit can be added to supercharge downwind performance.

How fast can a hobie tandem island go.

The Hobie Tandem Island (TI) is capable of sailing speeds of up to 20 kilometres per hour or approximately 11 knots in favourable winds and conditions. Under pedal power, the TI is one of the fastest pedal kayaks on the water thanks to its dual Mirage Drives with turbo fins and narrow hull form for minimal drag.

Can one person use a Hobie Tandem Island?

Despite being a tandem 2-person kayak, the Hobie Tandem Island is well suited to single-person use thanks to its simple and easy-to-manage sailing systems.

With replicated controls for steering and lowering/retracting the rudder from both cockpits and the ability to control the furling and sheeting systems from either seat, you do not need 2 people to sail this craft.

The narrow low-drag hull profile is easily propelled by a single MirageDrive 180 pedal system thanks to its excellent efficiency and turbo fins as standard. Hobie’s intelligent design means set up of the AMA outriggers, mast and sailing systems can easily be achieved alone with minimal fuss or wasted time.

Can you fish from the Hobie Tandem Island?

The Tandem Island (TI) makes an excellent fishing platform for when you need to efficiently cover ground to get to the fishing area. This speed and efficiency make it perfect for trolling, particularly for offshore pelagic species.

The TI is super stable thanks to its 2 AMA outriggers which means you can stand and even walk on the trampolines if you’ve got them, with confidence.

Can you car-top a Hobie Tandem Island?

Car-topping Hobie’s tandem island is a good option for those with a suitable vehicle who don’t want the added expense of a dedicated trailer.

Thanks to Hobie’s intelligent design, the AMA outriggers can be conveniently folded into the hull providing a maximum width of just 1.22 m. Alternatively, the AMAs and the AKA arms can be completely removed with zero tools to reduce the hull weight to just 59 kg.

Loading aids such as the T-Loader from Rhino can take almost all of the effort out of loading and unloading the craft from your roof racks, perfect for solo users or anyone looking to simplify the process.

Is the Tandem Island easy to sail?

Hobie designed their Tandem Island to be incredibly easy to sail making it a perfect craft for even the most novice sailors.

Hobie Mirage Tandem Island - 2023 Model

The ultimate versatile water craft for sailing fun, kayaking expeditions and fishing. The Tandem Island is geared up for two with dual Mirage Drive 180's with Kick Up Fins and two super comfortable Vantage CT seats. The mirage drives features Kick Up fins which will automatically kick up should they bottom out or hit an object underwater so that you don't have to worry as you use your craft. The Tandem Island is predominantly designed for sailing with a sleek 18ft 6in hull featuring two outrigger AMAs on AKA bars that can fold against the hull if needed for docking and tighter spaces. Unbolt the akas and amas and you have a super-quick, super-fun tandem pedal drive kayak - attach the AKAs and AMAs, un-furl the 90sqft mainsail and you have a stable sailing craft that is very capable of covering long distances on the coast and performing open sea crossings. Stable in the rough and fun to ride on long period ocean swells. Able to sail in even the lightest winds, the Tandem Island is great fun and can be used by novice sailors with ease and is great for learning the ropes and get to grips with even if you have never sailed before.

The sail features a a roller-bearing furling 18ft carbon mast for great performance and easy un-furling and reefing. A drop-down centreboard board prevents lateral slip and the large sailing rudder and rudder assembly provides plenty of helm control in a breeze. The AMAs easily fold parallel against the hull to make negotiating tight spots or docking. All sailing, centreboard and rudder controls can be operated from the seating positions so that you can sit back in the super comfortable Vantage CT seats and sail away into the distance.

Want to make a proper adventure of it? This is the ultimate expedition kayak for escaping for a multi day adventure! A large bow hatch and three 8in Twist-N-Seal hatches give access to the inside of the hull and the large rear cargo area offers lots of on-deck storage and can carry the Hobie H-Crate if needed. Add the optional Hobie Trampoline Kits to run between the AKA bars to create lots of extra space for a extra passengers and the ability to put your weight out over the AMAs when sailing to better engage the hull in certain conditions.
