For Steve Eddleston, sailing had never been an option. Born in the UK, he grew up in New Zealand and had never considered sailing despite Auckland being one of the “most pristine sailing areas in the world.” With a love for music, Eddleston was  “a musician and musicians don’t think about just going down to the dock and jumping on a boat.”

It wouldn’t be until the late nineties after a very successful career working with computers and programming that he was drawn to something else entirely. “I have only ever worked on computers. It’s all very binary. It’s challenging yes, but I was afraid that I would get to my sixties and realize ‘Hey! I’ve never done anything different.’"

It was at that moment in his Maine home looking out on the water that “It hit me. Sailing. Sailing is all analog, computers are digital. With sailing it's all feelings, and currents and tides. It is all physical and gut, feeling the wind on your face.” With that, Eddleston grabbed an Uncle Henry magazine at the supermarket, and purchased his first sailboat from the sailing section, a fourteen foot Hobie Cat.

“Of course I think now, ‘great idea Steve, you dummy!’ When you’re starting out sailing you should probably get something a little slower.”  While his first sail of the new Hobie Cat lasted about “50 yards before I was thrown off,” Eddleston soon became a talented self-taught sailor, regularly competing in the Maine regatta circuit with his son.

In 2008, he decided to “quit computers,” and while his original dream of the next chapter centered around Hawaii, many mai tais, and “lots of Jimmy Buffet playing,” Eddleston soon embarked on another passion project originating from his love of running.

Finding “Planet Fitness,” Eddleston was tasked with building eight gyms in eight years. Soon however, it was ten years and fifteen gyms later. Seeking “something different” to do as a special party for his management staff, Eddleston who was a member of the Herreshoff Marine Museum and lover of maritime history, saw that the iconic schooner Eros was available for charter.

Eddleston and his staff competed in the 2018 Herreshoff Regatta, chartering Eros for those two days. In 2019, he again chartered Eros competing in the regatta once more, a last hurrah as the sale of his gyms was on the near horizon. It was through the owners of Eros that Eddleston was connected to a wooden boat surveyor who when he learned of Eddleston interested in purchasing “something a little smaller than a schooner,” posed the question “well, what about the 12-metre, Weatherly? ”

Weatherly was built by the Luders Marine Construction Company in 1958. Designed by famed naval architect Philllip Rhodes, this 12 Meter Class sloop was built for the purpose of defending the 1958 America’s Cup. Despite losing in 1958, Weatherly returned and became the victorious defender in the 1962 America’s Cup.

The storied vessel was donated in 1965 to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, utilized as a training boat before being sold in 1970. Weatherly went on to spend many years on the Great Lakes under private ownership.

In 1986, Weatherly came into the hands of George Hill who sailed her back to Newport RI, traveling through the Panama Canal. She continued to serve as a charter vessel under Hill’s ownership until Spring of this year.

When the suggestion of purchasing Weatherly was brought to his attention, Eddleston immediately knew that it was meant to be. As it turned out, Eddleston had fatefully been a part of a charter on Weatherly in 2002. “ Weatherly and I touched each other's souls. I mean she was the most gorgeous vessel I had ever sailed.”

When Eddleston discovered that Weatherly was in great condition, and ready in the water, he made the purchase and acquired the vessel in April of this year. Most recently, Eddleston has competed with Weatherly in the Newport summer regatta circuit. “Like Weatherly, the story at the end of the day, is if you fail once, try again.”

CRUSADER (K-24) was designed and built for the last America’s Cup in the 12-metre class, she benefited from years of development in the class and advanced aluminum technology and skills at the time. Since then, she has been well-loved and maintained by her current owner, and more importantly, she has been used and not left to stand idle.

Spirit of Tradition Sailing Vessel Weatherly.

Weatherly, at anchor, features her European take on modern-classic design idioms. Photos courtesy of De Valk Yacht Brokers.

Of all the intriguing vessels drawn by leading European designer Andre Hoek, there’s something about Weatherly that endures.

Drawn back in 2002, this 65-foot sloop captures most of what moves the Spirit-of-Tradition plotlines in Europe. She features a traditional, full-volume hull shaped out of a graceful sheer and significant overhangs fore and aft. Her waterline is just 45 feet!

Weatherly also hits all the right modern-classic design references: Retro deck structures, open spaces fore and aft and a traditional, yet modern, ergonomic cockpit. The high-tech epoxied mahogany, rod rigging and bulb keel are all where they need to be.

But what’s important with Weatherly is how this German-built vessel organizes the Spirit-of-Tradition ideas into a larger, more European narrative, that is classic and modern simultaneously. There is a delicate balance of elements in play here, that takes time to consider.

But if you invest the effort to see Weatherly on her own terms, this boat sums what’s old and new in European naval traditions. And for what makes a modern-classic yacht tick overseas, Weatherly is as important a design reference as any.

Review of Weatherly 32

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 265.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The Weatherly 32 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.45 - 1.55 meter (4.76 - 5.06 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Weatherly 32 is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine

The fuel tank has a capacity of 114.0 liters (30 US gallons, 25 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Weatherly 32 is 1.54, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Weatherly 32 is about 188 kg/cm, alternatively 1055 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 188 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1055 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 12.36

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Americas Cup Champ Wins Another Prize: Yacht Weatherly Listed on National Register of Historic Places

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, USA (October 17, 2012) – The 1958 12 Metre sailing yacht Weatherly has received federal recognition for its contributions to the history of naval architecture, engineering, and recreation. Edward F. Sanderson, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, announced in September that the National Park Service has listed Weatherly on the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register is the Federal Government's official list of properties throughout the United States whose historical and architectural significance makes them worthy of preservation. Weatherly was the successful 1962 defender of the America's Cup, the most prominent trophy in the world of sailing. Weatherly is also significant as an early and notable example of both the 12 Metre class of racing yachts and yachts of wooden and laminate construction.

“Weatherly has had an enviable second life in Newport, Rhode Island, as one of two flag ships in a charter fleet of 12 Metres that symbolize, for many, the America’s Cup's finer days ,” said George Hill, who started America's Cup Charters in the mid-1980s with Herb Marshall after the two had respectively returned Weatherly and American Eagle back to racing form and the Newport waterfront. "It was 1958 when the 12 Meters made their debut in Cup competition in Newport and September 1962 when Weatherly, with Bus Mosbacher skippering, successfully defended the Cup, so you can imagine how overwhelmingly gratifying it is that on the exact 50th Anniversary of that accomplishment, Weatherly was singled out for such an honor.”

Measuring 69 feet overall, Weatherly is built of double-planked African mahogany over white oak frames. To America's Cup enthusiasts, her sail number, US-17, readily identifies her on the water and distinguishes her immediately from her stable mates--Nefertiti (US-19), American Eagle (US-21), Intrepid (US-22) and Freedom (US-30).

Newport, referred to as the "Sailing Capital of the World" and located in the "Ocean State," has more ties to the America's Cup than any other place on the planet. Until 1983, an American syndicate had always successfully defended the Cup in what became the longest winning streak--132 years--in the history of any sport. In 1930, '34, and '37, after the Cup competition moved to Newport from New York, it was sailed in magnificent J Class sloops of over 120 feet in size. Then WWII came and Cup racing halted, but in the early 1950s, the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) consulted with their English counterparts at the Royal Yacht Squadron about resuming international Cup competition. Rather than the extravagant boats of previous years, they sought something smaller and more affordable. They settled on the largest class of racing yachts actively sailing at that time, the International 12 Metre class.

Three syndicates sponsored new yachts that would compete to defend the America's Cup.

Henry D. Mercer of Rumson, New Jersey led the syndicate that commissioned Weatherly. Naval architect Philip L. Rhodes designed the boat and oversaw its construction. Although Rhodes (1895-1974) had never designed a 12 Metre, he was known as a versatile and painstaking designer who achieved considerable success with his ocean racing yachts. With its graceful lines, Weatherly's design was acknowledged for its artistic quality as well as its racing attributes.

A.E. Luders, Jr. of Luders Marine Construction Company in Stamford, Conn. constructed Weatherly using the best materials and most current laminating techniques of the day.

Although Weatherly did not make it past the 1958 Cup Trials, the boat compiled several wins under skipper Arthur Knapp Jr. Few Cup contenders have ever been given a second chance, but Weatherly’s steadily improving record led her owners to try again in 1962, when Australia challenge with Gretel. At the Luders boat yard, she underwent a series of changes to reduce weight above the water and increase ballast, plus other refinements.

The Americans fielded four boats to vie for the chance to defend against Gretel, and Weatherly prevailed.

The Cup match in September was closely contested, but Weatherly, expertly sailed by Bus Mosbacher and crew, won four of five races to defend the Cup. She remains the only vessel in the history of the Cup to win it after an unsuccessful first attempt. Notably, President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie were among the many spectators who watched the competition in Newport.

In 1965, the Henry Mercer Syndicate donated Weatherly to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, where she was used as a training boat. After serving as a trial horse in the 1967 and 1970Cup preparations, she was sold to private owners in 1970 and converted for offshore racing with a diesel engine and accommodations for her race crew. Following several years on the Great Lakes and in Puget Sound, Weatherly was purchased by George Hill in 1986 and sailed back to Newport via the Panama Canal.

While en route, Weatherly suffered a serious accident in Florida when a boat lift failed, dropping the vessel and then collapsing on it. Repaired in Portsmouth and re-launched in Newport, she resumed sailing as a charter boat in 1988. Weatherly has competed in numerous races since then, winning her division in the 12 Metre North American Championships several times. In 2005 she won the 12 Metre World Championship in her division, and the overall Rolex prize.

“Weatherly certainly is a legendary yacht,” said Hill. “I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to salvage a piece of history as well as create an opportunity through America’s Cup Charters for others to gain a sense of Weatherly’s significance in Cup history."

65ft Hoek Classic  2002  Stonington, CT

Bidding ended: october 30, 2020, "weatherly" vessel overview.

Built for the original owner by Henze Yachts in Moehnen, Germany in 2002, Weatherly has been professionally maintained throughout her life. She was shipped to the US by the current owner in 2015 and has been an admired feature of the New England sailing scene for the past four years. She competed successfully in the last two Newport to Bermuda races and has cruised extensively along the New England coast from Long Island throughout Maine.

She is breathtakingly beautiful, fast, seaworthy, comfortable and with her self tacking jib, remarkably easy to sail. She offers accommodation in four separate cabins with a spacious and elegant main salon which is equipped with air conditioning and heating. A key attraction is the elegantly designed two berth pilot house offering high visibility shelter from weather and providing a popular assembly point for guests and crew, under way or at anchor.

Weatherly has been maintained continuously to the highest standards throughout her life. New electronics and safety equipment were installed prior to the 2016 Newport to Bermuda race and the shore power electric was fully converted to US standards. Prior to the 2019 summer season, the hull and pilot house were stripped of all varnish to bare wood and refinished in clear Awlgrip by the renowned Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine. She looks spectacular with the added advantage of being easy to maintain.

Weatherly is highly seaworthy, simple to sail and operate single-handed, while combining ultimate function with style and simplicity.

Three Seas 45

Three Seas 45 is a 45 ′ 0 ″ / 13.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Edward S. Brewer and built by Weatherly Yachts starting in 1980.

Drawing of Three Seas 45

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originally, a number were built of wood as the PACIFIC 42 (LOA:43.5’). Then built of FG with a slight stern extension as PACIFIC 45, BREWER 45, CCC 45, THREE SEAS 45, WEATHERLY 45.
