On the northwest shore of Mission Bay, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa attracts visitors looking for a bit of R&R. The property is visibly older than other modern luxury accommodations in the San Diego area. However, each of the guest rooms features a plasma TV and an iPod docking station. Still, some guests can't help but remark that the rooms need an upgrade. But the on-site amenities are better received, with travelers praising the Catamaran Spa for its soothing ambiance and its long list of treatments. Recent guests also commend the hotel staff members for their friendly nature and eagerness to help out. And for many, the resort's Sunday Champagne Brunch was a highlight of their visit. The property charges a $34 resort fee, which covers amenities like hotel-wide Wi-Fi access, in-room water and towel service.

A Polynesian theme prevails throughout the resort, with koi ponds, waterfalls, squawking macaws, nightly torch lightings, lei-making classes, weekly luaus, and Hawaiian music in Moray's Lounge (complete with huge live eel).

No pool? No problem! Enjoy San Diego resort pools with day passes

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Summer days call for lazy hours spent taking a refreshing dip in the pool and basking in the sun, perhaps with a fruity cocktail in hand.

San Diegans who want to live the luxe life can do so for a day at a relative bargain: many local resorts offer day passes for their pools and spas.

For a fraction of the price of a hotel room, day visitors can enjoy many of the privileges as regular guests. Some resorts offer cheaper passes for children. (Pass prices listed below are subject to change.)

How to Visit Punta Maroma in Riviera Maya in 2024

Are you interested in visiting Punta Maroma in Riviera Maya Mexico? You’ve come to the right guide!

As a travel blogger that  lives in Playa del Carmen , I can honestly say that Punta Maroma of the best beaches I’ve seen in Riviera Maya–and one that most people don’t know about!

But as one of the more exclusive beaches in Riviera Maya, Punta Maroma can be a bit more difficult to access on your own.

In this post, I’m sharing  everything you need to know about   visiting Punta Maroma  including how you can visit, how to get there, top hotels, beach clubs, activities, and more.

Ready to find out how to visit this exclusive beach and hidden gem in Riviera Maya? Let’s get started!

What is Punta Maroma Like?

Punta Maroma is an exclusive beach in Riviera Maya, Mexico that is home to some of the  best resorts in Riviera Maya  and is known for its pristine beachfront.

The beach is very wide and flat and dotted with resorts along the coastline, as well as a dock for catamaran and  boat tours in Playa del Carmen .

There are no public beach access points at Punta Maroma, which makes it more difficult to visit if you’re not staying at one of the Punta Maroma hotels.

Where is Punta Maroma?

Punta Maroma is located about 30 minutes north of  Playa del Carmen  on Mexico’s Caribbean coast in the state of Quintana Roo.

The nearest airport is Cancun International Airport, which is about a 45-minute drive from Punta Maroma.

Driving times from nearby destinations are as follows:

  • Playa del Carmen to Punta Maroma:  30 minutes
  • Cancun to Punta Maroma : 1 hour
  • Tulum to Punta Maroma:  1 hour 15 minutes

What is Punta Maroma Known For?

Punta Maroma is a long stretch of Caribbean coastline known for its pristine tropical beachfront, which is widespread with powder white sand and clear turquoise water.

With a very flat and wide beachfront area, Punta Maroma is much less crowded than  Playa del Carmen’s beaches , making it the ideal spot for a peaceful and relaxing getaway.

Punta Maroma is also where you’ll find the famous  Palafitos Overwater Bungalows  at El Dorado Maroma, which are the only true overwater bungalows in Mexico.

Why Visit Punta Maroma?

While it may not be as well known as some of the other beaches in Riviera Maya, Punta Maroma is one of the area’s hidden gems and is definitely worth a visit!

Once you arrive at Punta Maroma, you’ll find that the beach is absolutely pristine. The powdery white sand and clear turquoise waters make it a perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, and simply taking in the incredible views.

There is also a beach club and restaurant to enjoy, as well as a variety of activities to keep you busy.

If you’re looking for a truly unique and unforgettable beach experience, Punta Maroma is where you want to be!

How to Visit Punta Maroma Beach

Unfortunately, there aren’t any public beach access points at Punta Maroma, which makes visiting on your own much more difficult. But it still can be done!

These are the different ways you can visit Punta Maroma:

  • By purchasing a day pass to Maroma Beach Club
  • By purchasing a day pass to Secrets Maroma
  • By booking a tour with Maroma Adventures
  • By staying at a hotel on Punta Maroma

Purchase a Day Pass to Maroma Beach Club

The easiest way to visit Punta Maroma is by purchasing a day pass to  Maroma Beach Club , which is the only beach club on Punta Maroma open to the public.

Maroma Beach Club is located right on the sand and offers plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, and beach beds for guests to use.

The beach club also has a restaurant and bar, where you can purchase food, beers, or cocktails in between swims.

The current price for Playa Maroma Beach Club access is around $400 pesos (~$20 USD) per person, which includes beach club access, lounge beds, showers, and restrooms.

It does NOT include food and beverage so you’ll have to purchase them separately.

You can  book ahead on Resort Pass here  (and it’s actually a bit cheaper) or you can purchase a day pass upon arrival.

Maroma Beach Club is also home to  Maroma Adventures , where you can easily arrange additional activities such as catamaran sails, snorkeling, or jet skis for an additional cost.

👉 Buy a day pass to Maroma Beach Club here

Travelista Tip:  If you are a Quintana Roo resident, be sure to ask for the local discount to get 20% off food and beverage.

Purchase a Day Pass to Secrets Maroma

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun also offers an all-inclusive day pass that can you purchase on Resort Pass  here .

This is one of the  best Playa del Carmen day passes , where you can enjoy unlimited food and drinks from the resort’s restaurants and bars.

This luxury adults-only resort also has 13 outdoor pools, 7 restaurants, and a swim up bar. Plus, you’ll have private lounge chairs to relax on the stunning Maroma Beach.

👉 Buy a day pass to Secrets Maroma on Resort Pass here

Book a Tour with Maroma Adventures

Another option for visiting Punta Maroma is to  book a tour with Maroma Adventures .

Maroma Adventures is one of the only tour companies located on Punta Maroma and is operated by the same company as Maroma Beach Club.

They offer many different adventure tours and activities with round-trip transportation included so this is a great option if you don’t have a car.

Plus, when you book a tour with Maroma Adventures, you get access to the Maroma Beach Club, where you can chill out on lounge beds on the beautiful Maroma beach after the tour.

These are some of the best Maroma Adventures tours:

  • Catamaran at Maroma Beach and Reef Snorkel
  • Private Speed Boat Tour at Maroma Beach
  • Sunset Cruise with Beach Dinner and Open Bar
  • Punta Maroma Parasailing Tour
  • Wave Runners and Beach Club Access

👉 Book a tour with Maroma Adventures here

Book an Overnight Stay at a Punta Maroma Hotel

If you want to spend an extended amount of time on Punta Maroma, then you’ll want to book an overnight stay at a hotel on Punta Maroma.

The most affordable option is  Catalonia Maroma , which is an all-inclusive resort. I’ve personally stayed there with some friends and had a great experience!

I’ve also included several other Punta Maroma hotels further in this post.

👉 Check rates and availability at Catalonia Maroma here

How to Get to Punta Maroma

Punta Maroma is located about 30 minutes north of Playa del Carmen, and is only accessible by car or boat.

The best way to get there is by driving or  renting a car , but you can also take a bus or taxi from Playa del Carmen.

👀 Don’t have a car?  Book a tour with Maroma Adventures  with transportation included!

Drive to Punta Maroma

Definitely consider  renting a car in Playa del Carmen  if you’re comfortable driving on your own and want to explore some places off-the-beaten-path.

From Playa del Carmen, simply take the main highway 307 north for about 12 miles (20 km) until you see the highway signs for Punta Maroma.

You’ll then need to take a right turn off the highway (follow the signs for El Dorado Maroma), which will lead you directly to the Maroma Beach Club.

👉 I recommend booking your rental car with  Discover Cars , which is a handy online car rental marketplace where you can compare prices from multiple companies.

There will be security gates at the entrance so you’ll need to let the guards know if you’re visiting a particular resort or the beach club.

Security can be tight at Punta Maroma, especially if you are staying at a resort. Let them know if you are just visiting the beach club, and they should let you pass.

Parking at Punta Maroma

Once you arrive in Punta Maroma, you’ll be able to find ample parking at the beach club or at the Punta Maroma resorts.

Take a Taxi to Punta Maroma

Punta Maroma can also be reached by taking a taxi from Playa del Carmen. You can expect taxi rates to be around $400-$500 pesos (~$25-$30 USD) each way.

For the return trip, there is a taxi stand outside of the Maroma Beach Club (next to El Dorado Maroma), and they can assist you with getting a taxi for the return trip.

Take Public Transportation to Punta Maroma

By public transportation, Punta Maroma can also be reached by taking a colectivo (shared van) or Playa Express van from Playa del Carmen. This is the cheapest option but also requires a bit of walking!

The main bus depot in Playa del Carmen is located at Avenida Juarez and Highway 307 (behind the McDonald’s).

You can either get on the normal colectivo from Playa del Carmen to Cancun, or the Playa Express. Note the Playa Express depot is just on the other side of the highway.

Both are going to the same place but the Playa Express is a large, Sprinter-style van and is much more comfortable.

Once you get on, you’ll want to tell the driver you’re going to Punta Maroma and you’ll pay upon exiting.

The cost should be less than $50 pesos (~$2.50 USD) each way and you’ll want to make sure you have small bills on hand (pesos are best) as most drivers don’t have much change.

When taking a colectivo to Punta Maroma, you’ll be dropped off on the side of the highway, so you’ll still have about a 30-minute walk to the beach from there.

For the return trip, you’ll need to reverse the process and cross the highway to flag down a colectivo or Playa Express headed from  Cancun to Playa del Carmen .

Michael Wolf has a new vision of hospitality, and it’s called “day-guesting.” He’s the chief executive officer of ResortPass , a digital platform that lets you day-guest at luxury hotels and enjoy amenities like pools, deluxe spas, rooms and fitness facilities, without needing to stay overnight. Whether you’re in need of some rest and relaxation in your hometown, a luxury destination to hang out at during a layover, or a beautiful location to work from, ResortPass is the exclusive provider of day-access to more than 1,600 hotels.

Key offerings at ResortPass vary by location. Some hotels offer pool and hot tub access, while others include a spa pass for saunas, steam rooms and lounges. You can hit the beach, the fitness center or book a daybed with your family in tow. ResortPass’s partners include Four Seasons, Fairmont, Waldorf-Astoria, Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Conrad, Andaz, EDITION and more.

Michael Wolf

I sat down with Wolf to explore the foundations of ResortPass and the day-guesting concept, and why it just might be the next big trend in destination travel.

What is day-guesting and why do you think it’s become so popular?

Day-guesting is booking access to enjoy hotel amenities for the day (pools, spas, etc) without needing to stay overnight, reflecting people’s desire for more getaways and moments of recharge, without having to travel. ResortPass is the leader in this space, providing day-access to pools, deluxe spas, fitness facilities, remote work spaces and even rooms at over 1,600 hotels and resorts. This concept has gained popularity because it offers a touch of luxury and relaxation without the financial or time commitment of a trip. People can enjoy high-end hotel facilities starting at just $25, making it an accessible indulgence.

What are the most popular use cases for ResortPass?

There are lots of ways our guests like to use ResortPass - the vast majority of bookings are groups of 2 or more, and nearly a third are families, as there are a lot of properties with waterparks, lazy rivers and other kid-friendly activities. ResortPass is popular for locals, especially in the summer months if you're looking for a getaway without having to actually get away and want to relax at a luxury pool or spa in your hometown. For travelers, ResortPass offers the perfect solution for enhancing any itinerary with a resort day, complementing an AirBnB stay, or providing a place to relax after checkout before catching a late flight.

Trump vs. harris 2024 polls: harris leads trump in latest post-dnc surveys, today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for wednesday, august 28th.

Any surprising ways you’ve seen people use ResortPass?

I think one of the best use cases we’ve seen is when someone has booked an Airbnb or a cruise and they’re either too early to check in or they have to check out/disembark hours before their flight. ResortPass provides them with a luxurious place to extend their vacation and store their bags during that awkward time in between.

On a personal level, customers have told us they booked with us to celebrate a cancer-free anniversary and to start a new family Thanksgiving tradition after a recent divorce, among many more.

A cabana at the Biltmore in Arizona, available on ResortPass.

A survey you released says that people feel more refreshed after only one day off - why do you think that is?

ResortPass conducted a survey that found 85% of people feel recharged after taking just one day off of work. We think this speaks to the benefits of taking more frequent, shorter vacations that deliver a much-needed break while also eliminating the stress and effort that comes with planning longer vacations. And given it’s more affordable than staycations or longer trips, people can do it more regularly to achieve better work-life balance and maintain a more consistent state of relaxation and well-being.

Who are some of your hotel partners?

ResortPass partners with all the major hotel brands, including the Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Marriott,, Hilton, Aloft and Hyatt Place, as well as many boutique hotels. Over 70 percent of our day passes are $65 or less - there is something for everyone.

Tell me about the benefits for hotels in signing on with ResortPass. How do you think the hotel industry is evolving?

Locals are a largely untapped audience for hotels, who typically only engage with a consumer once or twice a year at best when they travel. ResortPass allows hotels to have a relationship with local guests who are eager to use amenities like pools, spas and fitness facilities during the day - these guests provide incremental revenue opportunities from both booking passes and enjoying F&B onsite. The day-guest creates a whole new category of guests for hotels who can become more frequent customers, unlike the typical traveler.

With room rates up but no increase in occupancy and a decline in international travel, regional travel has become extremely popular. ResortPass taps into this trend by offering day access to hotel amenities, a service that over 90% of partner hotels had never offered until now.

How have you convinced these luxury hotel brands to come on board?

We’ve found that hotels, particularly luxury hotels, immediately see the benefits of partnering with ResortPass. On-site amenities such as pools and spas are typically underutilized, especially during the week, and ResortPass opens up an opportunity to monetize what already exists on hotel properties. Traditionally, hotel guests are not frequent customers, usually returning only once a year, if at all. Day-guesting attracts local visitors who are more likely to return multiple times, creating a steady stream of repeat customers for hotels.

Hotel partners have the advantage of our technology with the flexibility to set their own prices and inventory for day passes, optimizing revenue while providing value to both overnight and day guests. A prime example is the partnership with Hilton, offering curated day pass packages at participating properties across the U.S., bringing significant value through ancillary revenue and new clientele. The Hilton relationship originated with a handful of individual properties and evolved into an established partnership with over 200 properties to-date.

What are your plans for the company as day guesting becomes more popular?

Day guesting is growing rapidly and we’re extremely excited about the opportunities in this space. In the last two years, we have grown our number of users and hotel partners 3x. During summer, our most popular hotels see over 75% utilization, with hundreds of products selling out daily. While we continue to explore new markets and hotel partners, we also think there’s a future opportunity to go deeper in our spa offerings, events, and experiences.

Do you see a growing market for one-day experiences that aren't overnight?

The market for one-day experiences is massive and just getting started, driven by the demand for affordable indulgences, the desire for more frequent escapes, and the changing landscape of travel. Day-guesting lets people enjoy amenities like pools, spas, and fitness facilities for a fraction of the cost of an overnight stay. The rise of daycations offers financial flexibility and accessibility, making luxury experiences more attainable for a wider audience.
