Yacht Charter Alaska

Alaska Yacht Charter - Tracy Arm Cliffs, Alaska, beautfiful lush greenery on cliffs above clear waters

Cruise Alaska and adventure beyond luxury. A yacht charter through the Inside Passage is an experience akin to the final frontier.

An Alaska yacht charter is ideal for those longing for pure stillness, tranquillity, and untouched wilderness. Cruise Alaska, the northernmost state of the United States, on a luxury yacht and navigate lush yet rugged natural landscapes that offer some of the most incredible scenery in the world. Breeze past giant glaciers and witness the region’s wonderful wildlife. You’ll set your sights on bears, whales, and bald eagles in their natural habitats. Spend a day fishing for fresh wild salmon or hiking mountains. Alaska is quickly becoming an “it” destination for adventurous cruisers who want to experience nature at its most pristine on their private yacht charter. The tranquillity and rawness of the Alaskan wilderness are a unique change from typical yacht charter destinations. An Alaska yacht charter will exceed your expectations with adventure, relaxation, and luxury elements.

Where can I cruise to during an Alaska yacht charter?

Alaska’s Inside Passage is considered one of the most scenic and popular stretches of coastline, snaking between the mainland and off-lying islands and islets to the southeast. Cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage is as far removed as you can get from the favored Mediterranean and Caribbean superyacht cruising grounds. Alaska is the largest state in the U.S. regarding land and water, and the area is so vast that you can usually steer a solitary route, enjoying the complete wilderness onboard your charter yacht. This destination is perfect for charterers looking for completely secluded cruising grounds to unwind and be at peace with a group of friends or family aboard.

Hotspots to explore on an Alaska yacht charter

Exploring Alaska on a yacht offers a plethora of breathtaking locations to visit. Apart from popular destinations like Glacier Bay, Kenai Fjords National Park, and the Inside Passage, here are some other locations worth exploring:

  • Tracy Arm Fjord This narrow fjord is located south of Juneau and is known for its towering cliffs, tidewater glaciers, and stunning scenery.
  • Kodiak Island Known for its rugged landscapes, Kodiak Island offers excellent opportunities for wildlife and bird watching, including bears, eagles, and whales.
  • Wrangell-St. Elias National Park America’s largest national park is a remote wilderness area with towering mountains, massive glaciers, and abundant wildlife.
  • Petersburg This charming fishing town on Mitkof Island offers a glimpse into Alaska’s fishing culture and is a gateway to the Stikine River and LeConte Glacier.
  • Sitka Rich in history and culture, Sitka offers opportunities to explore Russian and Tlingit heritage, as well as outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking.
  • Haines Nestled between the Chilkat and Chilkoot Mountains, Haines is a picturesque town with opportunities for outdoor adventures such as hiking, fishing, and wild animal viewing.

Best Yachts for Charter in Alaska

Motor yachts for charter in alaska, sailing yachts for charter in alaska, alaska charter faqs, where is alaska .

Alaska – also known as The Last Frontier – is located on the northwest extremity of North America, bordering British Columbia and Yukon in Canada. It is the 49th and largest state in the U.S. It was admitted to the union in January 1959. Alaska is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea, the Chukchi Sea, and the Beaufort Sea, offering some of the world’s most breathtaking coastal scenery. Alaska is the only U.S. state to border two nations.

Where can I embark on an Alaska yacht charter?

A luxury charter in this region typically begins across the border in Canada’s Vancouver or Seattle, Washington, in the U.S. before cruising up the coastline and across the border into Alaska; alternatively, you can choose to board your luxury yacht in Alaska’s capital, Juneau. Wherever you decide to embark, as soon as you set sail, the world drifts far into the distance. On an Alaska yacht charter, it is all about timeless, majestic landscapes and the remarkable wildlife that has inhabited the area for thousands of years. From ancient snowfields, glaciers, and fjords to soaring eagles in lofty mountains, bears in dense forests to pods of whales escorting you through the wilds of America’s 49th state, Alaska, is one of the world’s most serene and otherworldly cruising grounds.

Why charter a yacht in Alaska?

Alaska offers breathtaking scenery, spectacular wild animals , and unmatched wilderness – making it an increasingly sought-after destination with travelers seeking an alternative vacation experience. Cruising Alaska’s coastline is to escape the crowds and enjoy nature in all its undiluted beauty.

Admire and explore some of Earth’s most stunning natural landscapes, dramatic scenery consisting of majestic glaciers, incredible beaches, soaring mountains, and striking fjords. What makes this land even more remarkable is its wilderness: aboard your private crewed yacht, you will enjoy a tranquil experience far from the madding crowds. Additionally, you can reach places that otherwise would be almost impossible to visit.

Alaska’s wild animals will leave you speechless: See whales breaching the icy waters, brown bears in their natural habitat, and spectacular bald eagles soaring overhead. Prince William Sound is a must-visit, boasting over 100 glaciers, islands, fjords, and more than 120 different species of animals.

Alaska is also one of the best spots for seeing the Northern Lights, especially if you follow the Alaskan coastline to the extreme north. It is considered the best destination to watch this dazzling show light up the night sky.

The remote regions of Alaska are visited by only a small number of people each year, and an Alaska superyacht charter offers the best way to experience the magic of this spectacular destination.

What to do and see on a charter in Alaska?

There is a wonderful selection of things to see and do on a yacht charter in Alaska, most centering around the great outdoors. Here are a few ideas:

Juneau is a coastal city in Alaska’s Inside Passage, which is a popular embarkation spot; however, it’s well worth taking a day to explore this destination either at the start or the end of your Alaska yacht charter holiday. The city is one of a handful in the world that has no direct road access to the world outside, making it truly unique. Highlights include the Juneau-Douglas City Museum and Alaska State Museum, both of which shine a spotlight on the region’s rich culture and heritage, the Last Chance Mining Museum, which explores Juneau’s Gold Rush history, and the Mt Roberts Tramway, which takes passengers 550m (1,800ft) above sea level, providing spectacular views.

Mendenhall Glacier

Access the Mendenhall Glacier via helicopter and explore its 13-mile-long river of ice. The Mendenhall Glacier is one of many major glaciers that connect to the vast Juneau Ice Field. There are several trails to explore, taking you past cascading waterfalls, salmon streams, and wild animals . The Mendenhall Glacier is also a great destination for enjoying a dog sledding experience.

Baranof Hot springs

Located in southern Alaska’s Chatham Strait, you’ll find nine natural hot springs near a cascading waterfall. Set amongst picturesque wild animals , these restorative hot springs sit at the end of a ¼ mile trek. The springs also feature a cold plunge pool to cool down quickly after a long soak.

Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory

The Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory is located in Tongass National Park, which also boasts the largest runs of pink salmon in Southeast Alaska – supporting the park’s high density of black and brown bears. The park includes several viewing platforms, while private guided tours are also available. Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory offers a rare opportunity to view endemic wild animals in their natural habitat, including bears, bald eagles, and harbor seals.

Frederick Sound

The striking Frederick Sound is surrounded by towering 9,842ft (3,000m) mountains, with its glacier-fed waters abundant with krill and herring, ensuring superb fishing opportunities. It’s also a great destination for observing humpback whales, who migrate to this area to feed on its nutrient-rich waters.

Northrop & Johnson can tailor a custom itinerary that includes your desired experiences. Contact our team of charter specialists today.

What wild animals can I expect to see from my Alaska charter boat?

Alaska’s rich wildlife is what makes an Alaska yacht charter so sought-after. Aboard an Alaskan yacht charter, you’ll have the opportunity to see a wide selection of ocean-dwelling marine mammals and land-based critters, including humpback whales, dolphins, seals, sea otters, walrus, bald eagles, falcons, snowy owls, hawks, brown and black bears, polar bears, wolves, moose and bison to name just a few.

What national parks are the best to visit when chartering in Alaska?

There are several national parks in Alaska, offering superb opportunities for wildlife viewing and outdoor pursuits. Some of the best national parks to explore during a yacht charter in Alaska include:

The Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve

The Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve cover 3.3 million acres of wilderness, including temperate rainforests, soaring glaciers, wild coastlines, and rugged mountains. The park is located in Alaska’s Inside Passage and is part of a 25 million-acre World Heritage Site. Cruise the coastline of this stunning national park or explore inland protected areas. Glacier Bay offers limitless opportunities for adventure.

The Denali National Park and Preserve

Covers six million acres of wild land spanning low-elevation taiga forest, high alpine tundra, and snowy mountains, including North America’s tallest peak, the 20,310ft (6,190m) Denali. Unfenced lands enable wild animals to roam free, ensuring superb opportunities for wild animal spotting. Enjoy outdoor pursuits in this pristine part of Alaska, or simply enjoy the park’s peace, tranquillity, and solitude.

The Kenai Fjords National Park

Located at the edge of the Kenai Peninsula, the Kenai Fjords National Park’s crowning feature is its 40 glaciers that flow from the Harding Icefield. Enjoy guided hiking trails through the park’s icy interior, or hop on a snowmobile for the ultimate adventure. The fjord is also a popular migratory passage with humpback whales who feed on its nutrient-rich waters.

The Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve

This vast national park spans 13.2 million acres, rising from the ocean to 18,008ft (5,488.8m). The landscape here is rugged and beautiful, marked by peak after peak and soaring glaciers. Wrangell Park is volcanic in origin; however, only Mount Wragness remains active, and steam vents can be seen near its summit. Historic mining sites pepper the park, providing a snapshot of the region’s history, while the park’s landscape offers a wealth of activities; hike, ski, or kayak, adventure is limited only by your imagination.

Katmai National Park and Preserve

The Katmai National Park and Preserve in the southwest of Alaska was established in 1918 and is an important habitat for salmon and thousands of brown bears. Indeed, the park is North America’s largest protected population of brown bears. The vast wilderness is rich in environmental influences, offering diverse natural flora and fauna to explore. The region has been inhabited for over 9,000 years and, as such, boasts a history that is uniquely intertwined with the landscape.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve

Shimmering turquoise lakes, steaming volcanoes, and craggy mountains personify Lake Clark National Park and Reserve. Not only does the park protect local wild animals , but it also preserves the ancestral homeland of the Dena’ina people. Crescent Lake, deep in the park’s wilderness, is considered one of the park’s most scenic locations and offers a wealth of experiences, including fishing, hiking, wild animal spotting, and kayaking.

What is the best time to cruise Alaska?

The seasons of Alaska each present unique experiences. From early June to the end of August, the Alaskan summer season inspires wonder and hope, with a lush green landscape and royal blue skies set against snow-peaked mountains. Wildlife awakens from the winter, and it’s a great time to explore the outdoors. The shoulder season – May and September – is also a fantastic time to visit. Winter in Alaska is the best time to view the Northern Lights and enjoy winter sports. Charterers will often select the month they wish to visit depending on the wild animals they hope to see and the activities they want to enjoy. If you want to charter a yacht in Alaska, contact Northrop & Johnson.

What do I need to know about the Alaskan weather?

Deals on Alaska Yacht Charters

How to get the best deal on Alaska charter cruises? Booking early is a must to secure vessels for charter space, but booking a charter often equals significant per-person discounts off standard cabin rates. Our experts know the nuances and span of private Alaska cruise options in the region and can link you to the latest Alaska yacht charter discounts. View our  Alaska cruise deals  to see what’s currently on sale.

Alaska Yacht Charter Rates

A full-boat charter has many advantages over an independently booked cruise, price being a big advantage in addition to exclusivity and flexibility. The trips listed on our website show rates per person, for travelers booking individual staterooms on prescheduled departures. But when you book a full Alaska yacht charter, each person will save 10 to 30% off these regular per-person cruise rates.

Alaska yacht charters are typically planned and contracted at least one year in advance of the cruise departure date, but as long as space is available charter yachts in Alaska can still be secured. Charter rates vary by destination, season and availability. Off-season Alaskan yacht charters garner the greatest savings while high-season dates should be secured a year or more in advance. To get a jump-start on charter research, read our 7-step guide How to Charter a Yacht then consult our Alaska yacht charter specialists for the ultimate guidance.

Charter Terms & Conditions

Terms and conditions are sometimes more strict with Alaska charter cruises (and a charter anywhere, for that matter) than they are for individual bookings. Expect to pay a charter rate that remains the same, whether or not you have enough travelers to fill all the staterooms. Cancellation terms usually require a nonrefundable deposit and payments as the cruise date approaches. Some Alaska charter boats require that one person be responsible for signing the charter agreement. Group travel insurance policies are highly recommended when considering a private Alaska cruise. Our experts will work with you and your group to make the charter process seamless and transparent.

Combine Your Private Alaska Cruise with Land

Complement your Alaska yacht charter with time on land, or plan a custom adventure based at a wilderness lodge. We offer scenic locations, authentic cuisine and unique lodge access by way of floatplane, helicopter, raft or boat. Visit Denali National Park as few visitors do, stay at the only lodge within Kenai Fjords National Park or opt to arrive to the most remote of lodges in true Alaska style—by floatplane. View all of our Alaska land tours to find a good fit for your interests.

Customizing Your Alaska Yacht Charter

If you are interested in larger vessels, private group departures and/or private stays at wilderness lodges, visit our Alaska trips  page. Additional Alaska charter boats may be available for your dates, so contact us for the most up-to-date options for custom Alaska cruises. As each private Alaska cruise can be customized to your needs, contact one of our experts to explore each ship’s charter options more in detail.

Explore the Inside Passage on a Private Alaska Yacht Charter

The scenery in Alaska is unmatched. On Alaska yacht charters you can see ice-capped mountains surrounded by lush forests with rushing waterfalls cascading into the deep blue ocean waters. You can kayak to a clear mountain lake that is fed by a melting glacier.

Alaska’s best attraction is most definitely a natural one: the outdoors. You will see majestic creatures like black bears, grizzly bears, deer, and bald eagles. As your private boat glides through the water, keep your eyes peeled for signs of aquatic wildlife. You will be able to see a variety of whales, such as humpback whales and orcas. More commonly, while you’re aboard one of our luxury Alaska yacht charters, you might spot porpoises, harbor seals, sea lions, or sea otters.

Alaska is the Perfect Summer Yacht Charter Destination

Alaska holds major appeal for those looking to reserve a tour on a private boat rental, but its greatest shortcoming is its extreme weather, making charter season only a few months long – from mid-May through mid-September.

Summer temperatures are pleasant with highs generally between 55-78° Fahrenheit. Nights are comfortably cool as the temperatures drop to the 50s, meaning you can spend your evenings outdoors or on the deck of the yacht, but you will need a jacket.

Alaska Crewed Motor Yacht Charters

The best way to see Alaska is by chartering your own private motor yacht. A private boat cruise is the ultimate way to explore the Alaskan scenery, from breath-taking glaciers to abundant wildlife and marine life.

If you wish to avoid crowds and spend a fun time full of adventures, let our charter brokers prepare a customize yachting package for you and your family.

Most of the available crewed motor yachts in Alaska are available out of Juneau and Sitka. Be prepared to experience an adventure of a lifetime!

A boat and a glacier in Alaska

The Inside Passage runs from Juneau and Glacier Bay in the north to Ketchikan in the south and puts on a dazzling display of ice.

The coastal mountain ranges and islands of the Inside Passage offer opportunities for fishing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, and hiking.

Tracy Arm Fjord About 70 miles south of Juneau, you’ll find Tracy Arm Fjord, a narrow, inlet with towering, craggy walls. The fjord is fascinating all by itself, with waterfalls and national protected forests along the way. If you’re lucky, you might see a black or brown bear, harbor seals, or wolves in the adjacent Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness.

But the real reason to visit is the fjord’s glaciers. Tracy Arm is home to some of Alaska’s most photogenic glaciers, including Sawyer Glacier. Sawyer is an active tidewater glacier – which means large chunks “calve” off. And when you see it up close, you’ll have the chance to witness one of these massive bergs breaking off and crashing to the sea below, as it’s known to calf regularly.

Glacier National Park If you’re in search of glaciers, you’ll find plenty in Glacier Bay National Park. Located north of Juneau, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers many spectacular sights to see, including 7 active tidewater glaciers.

Glacier Bay is home to some of Alaska’s largest active glaciers. Grand Pacific Glacier – for instance – sits at the back coast of the bay. It measures two miles wide, with ice walls towering 15 stories. Grand Pacific’s neighbor, Margerie Glacier, though, is the star of the show.

Margerie Glacier is majestic, so no wonder it is a must-see sight for many charter boats. With an ice face measuring 25 stories tall, watching the glacier drop ice into the bay will take your breath away. Beyond the glaciers, the National Park is also an incredible spot for whale-watching, kayaking, and other water sports.

Juneau Juneau is Alaska’s state capital and one of the most beautiful cities in the state. The city can only be reached by airplane or boat, there is no road access. Juneau is the perfect base for starting your Alaska yacht charter.

You can’t visit Juneau without a trip to Mendenhall Glacier. Located just 10 miles from downtown Juneau, the glacier is part of the Juneau Icefield, a photographic panorama of steel blue ice that’s been here since the last Ice Age. More on Juneau .

Sitka Sitka is located on the outer coast of Alaska’s Inside Passage and lies at the heart of the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rain forest in the world.   More on Sitka

Ketchikan Ketchikan, a lively fishing and logging community, is located in the southernmost city on the Inside Passage. Also called the “Salmon Capital of the World”, Ketchikan is known for fishing, beautiful scenery, and rich Native culture. More on Ketchikan

Hubbard Glacier Hubbard Glacier – north of Glacier Bay – is North America’s largest tidewater glacier. This is a massive giant you have to see to believe. Measuring 6+ miles wide, the glacier is continuing to grow, or “surge,” and Hubbard towers 40 stories tall.

Hubbard is also one of the most beautiful glaciers in Alaska, with jade blue and frozen sapphire hues. Not only does it wow with its vastness – it’s also a treasure to see up close. The Disenchantment Bay and journey into the fjord put on a show of wildlife. The fjord is home to seal and whale populations, and the region is well-known for its fishing.

Private yachts offer flexible itineraries, based on guests’ preferences. Here are samples of two popular charter routes:

  • Juneau to Juneau itinerary
  • Juneau to Sitka itinerary

The Alaska Bucket List

Whale watching in Alaska

You can find eight species of whales in the Alaskan waters. Some of the species live in the waters year-round, and some migrate to Alaska in the summer. The most common whales that you will see in Alaska are the Orca and humpback whales . More on whale watching in Alaska .

Seeing a Glacier Up Close and Personal

Most of the time yacht rental vacations include warm tropical waters, but this time around you’re in for something completely different. Nothing is more magical than cruising past towering glaciers while icebergs float on the water and chunks of frozen water crash into the sea below.

Inside Passage glacier, a yacht charter will bring you past walls of ice, stunning waterfalls, and wildlife sunning on floating chunks of ice as they take a break from splashing around. Bottom line, if you fancy yourself an explorer, chartering a yacht in Alaska will let you live your dreams.

Seeing Amazing Wildlife

Cruise through ancient forests and see wildlife in its natural habitat. Look for majestic creatures like black bears, grizzly bears, deer, and bald eagles on land. As your private yacht glides through the water, keep your binoculars ready in anticipation of spotting giant brown bears. Or, you may spy a black bear picking berries from a bush or a gracious moose ambling to the water for a drink.

Alaska luxury yacht charter

The epitome of an epic ice adventure, a luxury yacht charter in the US state of Alaska, which can be accessed via the famous Inside Passage, will appeal to intrepid souls and nature enthusiasts alike. Explore a labyrinth of winding channels, emerald fjords and desolate sounds, visit traditional villages and picturesque islands and gaze upon towering mountains, heaving icebergs and wildly beautiful vistas. One of the most majestic cruising grounds in the world, this remote region of the United States is a glacial wonderland where visitors can see abundant wildlife like humpback whales breaching the sapphire waters, pods of orcas swimming amid the ice and seals basking on the rocks. Mix in activities from heli-skiing and dog sledding to kayaking and fishing, and your tailor-made itinerary can make for a truly awesome charter of a lifetime.

Alaska yacht season and weather

The charter season is relatively short and runs from mid-May to mid-September. Late May to late July are the peak months where visitors can enjoy longer daylight hours and balmier weather. On June 21st, the longest day of the year, the south-east region of Alaska can experience up to 18 hours of daylight. Summer highs will be between 21 and 25°C.

Alaska yacht charter itineraries

Most charters rendezvous in Juneau or Ketchikan. Superyachts can cruise north from Seattle to Alaska.

The famous Inside Passage features on many Alaskan itineraries thanks to its dramatic sunsets, abundant flora and fauna and last-frontier landscapes. If meeting your charter in Juneau, enjoy the beauty of this remote capital and take dog sleds across the glacier or hike the picturesque trails. For your first passage, cruise around 40 nautical miles to the isolated fjord of Tracy Arm and the jaw-dropping twin Sawyer Glaciers. Next stop is Dawes Glacier, 30 nautical miles south, where shards and lumps of ice calve and tumble into the fjord. Drop anchor in Wood Spit Cove for a perfect evening of kayaking or fishing, before a gourmet dinner on board with a spellbinding backdrop. The next day, cruise south into Frederick Sound, where lucky visitors will spot humpback whales breaching the water and pods of orcas. Swing on the hook in Cannery Cove, where you can spot brown bears feeding along the shoreline.

The icy waterfalls and towering mountains of Red Bluff Bay are a prime spot to see bears snatching at water for salmon, especially in August. From there, it’s an easy 20 nautical-mile stretch to a treasure trove of natural wonders at Baranof Warm Springs, off the Chatham Strait, where visitors will find the cascading 30-metre waterfall and nine geothermal springs. Cruise north through the Chatham Strait, stopping at Tenakee Springs, and anchor overnight at the picturesque harbour of Pavlof. The next morning, head back to Juneau and disembark.

Alaska by superyacht

Getting to alaska.

Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau airports are Alaska’s primary ports of entry. Juneau International Airport is served by private jets, charter, regional and major airlines. Seattle is a three-hour flight from Juneau.

Much of the Alaskan wilderness is inaccesible by road, so chartering a yacht with a touch-and-go helipad is the best way to get around and see this magical region. Picnics can be arranged on the glaciers or adventure lovers can go heli-skiing.

Legal requirements

Travellers from some countries may need to be apply for a Visa to visit Alaska. US citizens do not need passports to fly to Alaska from other destinations in the US.

Permits are required to enter Glacier Bay National Park, Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary and Anan Creek Bear Observatory.

Following a change in US law in August 2018, owners of vessels over 300 GT can now fly an American flag and register their boat in the United States.

According to Yacht Services of Alaska, vessels of more than 400 GT require a current Alaskan COFR and Oil Spill Response Plan to be in effect prior to arrival in Alaskan waters.

Various pilotage rules apply, though vessels larger than 19 metres and less than 53 metres are eligible for exemptions (apply at least 30 days in advance).

Search efforts end for wreckage of boat that sank with 4 onboard near Homer

The Alaska Dive Search Rescue and Recovery Team this week stopped looking for the wreckage of a boat that sank near Homer earlier this month with four people aboard.

A family member of Mary and David Maynard and their two sons, 11-year-old Colton and 7-year-old Brantley, filed a presumptive death petition with the Homer court this week.

The family of four was on a 28-foot aluminum vessel with four other people when it began taking on water Aug. 3 roughly 16 miles west of the Homer Spit, officials from the U.S. Coast Guard have said. The boat was a recreational vessel, not a charter, said Cmdr. Mike Salerno, spokesman for the 17th Coast Guard District.

The Maynards were inside the ship when it began taking on water and the other four people were on the deck, Salerno said. There are indications that the boat may have sunk quickly, but it’s not clear what caused it to take on water and the Coast Guard did not launch an investigation, he said.

The other four people aboard made it onto a life raft and were rescued by a good Samaritan nearby, authorities said.

The Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers searched an area of roughly 1,420 square miles over 31 hours before suspending the efforts, Salerno said.

The Alaska Dive Search Rescue and Recovery Team began search efforts to find the wreckage using sonar equipment, but they were hampered for several days by poor weather, the organization wrote on social media . The team searched for about 10 hours last week, but winds, waves and fast currents made it challenging for the boat to maintain course while towing the sonar equipment, they wrote.

On Wednesday, the team said it was ending active search efforts.

“It is with great sadness, we are ending the active search efforts for the Maynard Family. If something is located or possibly located in the future we will respond to assess what is located if requested by DPS,” they wrote online. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the survivors, their family, friends, and community.”

Mary and David Maynard were from Troy, Texas, and raised their sons there, their relative Christi Wells has said. Colton and Brantley both played soccer and baseball, she said.

Mary Maynard, 37, worked as a traveling nurse and David Maynard, 42, stayed home with their children and had a lawn care business. The family loved to travel and spend time with family and friends, which is what they were doing while visiting Alaska, Wells said.

On Friday, Wells said the family wants to thank the community and everyone involved in the search efforts for their support and prayers, she said.

Final Body Is Recovered From Yacht That Sank Off Sicily

Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was on board a yacht that was hit by a storm and went down in the early hours on Monday.

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.

For nearly a week after a violent storm sent a luxury yacht to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Sicily, Italian scuba divers plunged deep underwater, moving through ropes and fallen objects inside the yacht in a desperate search for the six people missing.

On Friday, the recovery of the body of Hannah Lynch, 18, put an end to the wrenching search and to the slim hopes that any of the missing people might have survived.

Ms. Lynch, the daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died in the yacht’s sinking, was the last person to be formally unaccounted for since Monday after tragedy struck a group that had been celebrating her father’s acquittal in a high-profile fraud case.

There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board the 180-foot vessel, the Bayesian, when it was hit by a storm and went down about 4.30 a.m. on Monday, the boat’s management company said on Friday.

Fifteen survived.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found on Monday, a few hours after a downpour hit the northwestern coast of Sicily, near the port of Porticello, where the yacht had been anchored.

But it took several days to recover the bodies of the six passengers who were apparently trapped inside the yacht: Mr. Lynch and Ms. Lynch; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

On Friday, a round of applause could be heard from the firefighter’s tent set up on the dock in Porticello after the last body was pulled out in what the corps described as a “complex” search operation at a depth of about 165 feet. The firefighters said they had made 123 immersions into the sea to try to retrieve the bodies.

The body bag was then loaded onto an ambulance. A local man had left a small wooden cross on the rocks in front of the dock where the bodies were brought ashore.

Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to reach the safety of a raft. They were rescued by a sailing schooner that had been bobbing about 150 yards from the yacht.

In a statement, the family thanked the search teams and said that it was enduring a “time of unspeakable grief.”

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends,” the statement added.

As prosecutors from the nearby city of Termini Imerese began conducting interviews with the survivors and possible witnesses, the crew and passengers of the Bayesian have been confined to a local hotel, where the news media have been denied access.

Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, said on Thursday that the survivors had turned down the psychological assistance his department had offered to them.

In Porticello, the sprawling presence of rescue services made a haunting backdrop for an otherwise tranquil port town. People sunbathed and ate ricotta-filled pastries, and stores selling sandals and dried fruit opened as normal, while coast guard and firefighting vessels came and went from the shore, taking scuba divers out to the shipwreck.

Other reminders of the tragedy could be seen along the coast, among palm trees and ice cream shops, with groups of onlookers staring out at the sea, now tranquil and flat.

Local and national news organizations have complained that prosecutors have not issued a statement or held a news conference. Prosecutors may shed more light on the yacht’s sinking when they hold a news conference on Saturday.

The marine accident investigation branch of the British transportation ministry was also looking into the shipwreck of the vessel, which was registered in Britain.

One of the major questions is what caused the boat to sink: Was it the fault of the boat maker, of the crew or of a powerful act of nature — or some combination of the three? None of those who were onboard the Bayesian have spoken publicly.

The luxury yacht, built by the Italian manufacturer Perini Navi and launched in 2008, had the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world, according to its makers.

Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought Perini Navi, has been assertive in defending the design and construction of the yacht, saying that the Bayesian would be “unsinkable” if the proper procedures were followed.

But yacht design experts have cautioned that the lesson of the Titanic, the ocean liner that sank on its 1912 maiden voyage, showed that no vessel, no matter how robust, was worthy of that label.

Nautilus International, a maritime-focused labor union, criticized any implication that the crew had been at fault, especially at this stage. In a statement , the union’s general secretary, Mark Dickinson, said, “Experience tells us that maritime tragedies are always the result of multiple, interconnected factors,” and he urged people to refrain from drawing any conclusions until a thorough investigation had been carried out.

The investigation into the causes will take months, prosecutors said.

Michael J. de la Merced contributed reporting.

Tributes to 'brilliant' Mike and Hannah Lynch as family speak of devastation and shock

alaska 18 yacht

The family of Mike and Hannah Lynch, who died after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily , have said they are “devastated” and “in shock”.

On Friday, 18-year-old Hannah became the final missing passenger to be recovered from the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht.

The discovery comes as unconfirmed reports in the Italian media have said that prosecutors are set to announce a manslaughter investigation into the incident.

The pair, alongside Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the yacht sank at around 5am local time on Monday.

In a statement, the family of Mr Lynch and Hannah said: “The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends.

“Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue.

“Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

alaska 18 yacht

Family friend Albert Read said: “I’ve never met anyone like Mike – a searing intellect, a steel that would transform the world around him.

“An instinct for family and friends – organising children’s treasure hunts, big gatherings of neighbours in Suffolk – and, with Angela, a determination to light up the worlds of art and science for his two beloved daughters.

“Warm, funny, brilliant, loyal and exceptionally brave, with a heart as big as his brain.”

The Lynch family also issued a photograph of Mr Lynch and Hannah alongside their tribute.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, said the search for Hannah was not “easy or quick”, comparing the sunken yacht to an “18-storey building full of water”.

The bodies of all six missing passengers have now been brought to shore in the small fishing village of Porticello, around 11 miles from the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 – including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping on to a lifeboat.

The body of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the superyacht, was recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday.

alaska 18 yacht

The boat trip was a celebration of Mr Lynch’s acquittal in a fraud case in the US.

The businessman, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud relating to its 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Hannah Lynch’s sister Esme described her as “the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister”.

Paying tribute, she said: “Hannah often burst into my bedroom and lay down with me. Sometimes beaming with a smile, sometimes cheeky, sometimes for advice. No matter what, she brought boundless love to me.

“She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me.

“And on top of all this, she had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends, and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals.

“She is my little angel, my star.”

One of Hannah’s former teachers paid tribute to her after her body was recovered from the wreckage, saying: “I will remember her for what she taught me: kindness, compassion and commitment.”

Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, head of English at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith , said: “I’ve never taught someone who combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm in the way Hannah did.”

Her friend Katya Lewis also paid tribute, saying: “Being with Hannah made me feel whole and happy.

“She is the most special friend anyone could ask for and I will always love Hannah.”

In a statement confirming their parents’ deaths, the Bloomer family described the couple as “incredible people and an inspiration to many”.

Mr Zagarola previously said a decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed is “not on the agenda”, but will be in the future.

The luxury yacht’s captain, James Cutfield, has reportedly been questioned by authorities in connection with the sunken vessel.

A helicopter, remotely controlled underwater vehicles, naval units and cave divers were used during the search operation.

Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank as the area was hit by a storm.

The wreckage of the superyacht is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres (164ft).

Prosecutors in the nearby town Termini Imerese are scheduled to hold a press conference on Saturday morning.

Friends Pay Tribute to Hannah Lynch as 6th Body Recovered from Sunken Sicily Yacht: 'Beautiful Soul'

Hannah, 18, was the last remaining person missing after a luxury super yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Aug. 19

FAMILY HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock

Hannah Lynch, the daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and believed to be the last missing person found, was planning on attending the University of Oxford

Su Wijeratna, the headmistress at Hannah's former school, called her a “remarkable young woman and a gifted student"

"The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends," a spokesperson said in a statement

As the sixth and last body, believed to be that of Hannah Lynch, was recovered on Friday, Aug. 23 after the sinking of the luxury super yacht off the coast of Sicily earlier this week, family and friends of the 18-year-old are remembering her as a “warm and beautiful soul.”

PEOPLE previously reported that the "last person still missing in the Palermo shipwreck is identified," according to Italian coast guard sources on Aug. 23.

Four bodies were recovered on Wednesday, Aug. 21, while a fifth body was found in the wreckage. Among the dead was British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , an Italian government official confirmed on Thursday, Aug. 22.

Until the discovery of the sixth body on Aug. 23, Hannah, Mike's daughter, was the last missing person after the Bayesian , a 183-foot vessel, sank on Monday, Aug. 19, when it was hit by a storm.

Amid Italian authorities’ efforts to find the six missing victims this week following the sinking, tributes have poured in for Hannah, who was planning to begin her academic year at the University of Oxford, where she recently won a place, as reported by The Telegraph .

Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, the head of English at London’s Latymer Upper School where Hannah previously attended, praised her. “I’ve never taught someone who combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm in the way Hannah did,” he said, via The Guardian . “She lit up the classroom with her energy, passion for learning and sheer intelligence (though never with a hint of arrogance).”

Mitropoulos-Monk said that Hannah was “one of the best English students in the country,” adding that she scored 100% in her English literature GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education).

“The love Hannah had for everything she held dear was passionate and pure,” said Katya Lewis, a friend, per The Independent . “She had a warm and beautiful soul. Being with Hannah made me feel whole and happy. She is the most special friend anyone could ask for and I will always love Hannah.”

In a statement shared with The Telegraph , Su Wijeratna, the headmistress at Latymer, called Hannah a “remarkable young woman and a gifted student.”

“She had the brightest of futures ahead of her and was so excited to be starting Oxford this year, to study her beloved English,” said Wijeratna.

“She was driven by a profound love of words that connected her to the world and her loved ones,” Wijeratna added. “As a community we are shocked and heartbroken over Hannah’s death and we send our thoughts and prayers to her family and all who knew her.”

PEOPLE reached out to Latymer Upper School for comment on Aug. 23.

A spokesperson for the Lynch family released a statement, per the BBC , that read: "The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends."

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy,” the statement continued. “They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue."

Prior to the Bayesian ’s sinking on Aug. 19 near Porticello, Hannah and her father Mike, the founder of software company Autonomy, were among those aboard the yacht with 20 other people, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares. They were reportedly celebrating Mike’s acquittal in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in connection to Autonomy’s sale to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for $11 billion. Had he been convicted, Mike could have served up to 25 years in prison.

In an interview with The Sunday Times published last month, Mike said his acquittal in the U.S. fraud trial had given him a "second life." However, he added: "The question is, what do you want to do with it?”

“If this [the verdict] had gone the wrong way, it would have been the end of life as I have known it in any sense," Mike told the newspaper. He also said he had "various medical things that would have made it difficult to survive."

Journalist Danny Fortson, who spoke with Mike for the Times piece, told PEOPLE that he appeared "incredibly grateful and happy," but was still "struggling to accept" his new reality .

In addition to Mike and Hannah, the other four missing persons from the sinking at the time included  Christopher Morvillo , a New York City attorney; his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; and his wife, Judy . Their bodies, as well as Mike's, were eventually recovered.

The body of another victim, identified as Recaldo Thomas , a chef, was earlier found shortly after the Bayesian capsized. Meanwhile, Bacares was one of 15 people rescued from the sinking yacht.
