Jarcat Five and Jarcat Six

The JARCAT FIVE is a success in all respects including cost, weight, ease of construction, level ride, interior and cockpit space, and performance either under power or sail. There are over 200 JARCAT FIVES afloat, and this is strong evidence that the J5 is truely a great trailer sailer.

Both the JARCAT FIVE and JARCAT SIX have been designed for amateur construction, and the plans include simple instructions and plentiful drawings which are easily followed. You don't need any prior boat building experience to construct the JARCAT FIVE or JARCAT SIX designs. Although some builders have worked outdoors under a tarp, most build in a shed or garage. The JARCAT FIVE and JARCAT SIX are built in one piece so you should allow at least one metre all around plus a space to cut the plywood.

jarcat 6 catamaran for sale

Building time varies considerably. A JARCAT FIVE could be built in 300 hours and a JARCAT SIX in 350 hours. A really high quality finish will take longer to achieve, and build times for experienced boatbuilders would be considerably less than those provided above. When your finished building, the JARCAT is easily handled under motor or sail, and the emphasis is on family enjoyment. A double berth of 4' width is included in the J5, along with two good quarter berths, galley and heads space plus lockers, usable foredeck with a good anchor locker.

The JARCAT SIX is a much larger T/S, though still light enough to trail behind cars with 1500cc or better engines. They are quick to rig and launch, and all sail controls are light and easy to use as befits a family boat. All berths on the Jarcat 6 are 2.4m long! The galley may include a stove/sink/table & cupboards. Headroom need only be enough to sit up on the bed. The entry hatch on the MK11 JARCAT 6 is partly over the hull which allows a small area of standing room!

jarcat 6 catamaran for sale

JARCAT FIVE owners have mentioned 20knots plus under sail. This drops to around 5 knots to windward when tacking through 90 degrees. Under sail the J6 has bettered 20knots. You are likely to see 12knots in 15 knots of wind....sailing flat. Even to windward the JARCAT SIX can reach 12 knots.

The JARCAT SIX boasts the ability to carry a 25hp outboard for speeds up to 18knots! You would be surprised how handy that is. The suggested 8hp Tohatsu drove the J6 to 11 knots and the JARCAT FIVE to 13 knots. Alternatively a 3.5hp long shaft outboard is sufficient power. When travelling you may use the JARCAT FIVE or JARCAT SIX just as you would a caravan.

Seller's Description

Rare Jarcat 6 catamaran sailboat for sale. This 19.5 foot (6 meter) long, 8.5 foot wide trailerable pocket cruising catamaran design is hugely popular in Australia, but are fairly rare here in the States (Google Jarcat 6). This boat is currently set up as a power catamaran with wheel steering and a 25 hp Nissan 4 stroke. However, I did sail it for several years and it comes with everything needed to sail.

Length: 19.5 feet Beam: 8.5 feet Draft: 13 inches board up

Boat could use a fresh coat of bottom paint (if you plan on keeping it in the water; bottom paint included), and the lexan windows could stand to be replaced. They’re weathertight, but are getting a bit sun glazed.

This is a very fun boat, that sails very well and is great for the shallow rivers and bays here in eastern North Carolina and Virginia. Very stable and roomy for its size, and you can run it right up to the beach and step off the front without getting your feet wet. Also much lighter then it looks, so it tows very easily. Asking $6000 and I’m open to reasonable offers, however the only trade I would consider is for a Hobie Tandem Island.

Equipment: -Mast, boom, and all standing and running rigging -Main sail and two head sails -Daggerboard and tandem kick-up rudders -25 hp Nissan 4 stroke outboard (could use a carb rebuild; one of the carbs won’t quite synch with the other two) -40 lb thrust trolling motor backup -Deep cycle house battery and separate starting battery -Memory foam full size mattress in weatherproof coverings, always stored indoors when not in use -Robust tandem axle trailer with boarding ladder on tongue

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I've been looking at the Jarcat 6, thinking I could shorten the cabin and have a ginormous cockpit, as well as a nice big head in a trailerable boat. On the Jarcat the mast is located very far aft, so shortening the cabin would allow the mast to move forward and make for a more normal rig, which I'm guessing is a good thing. Anyway, looking at pictures I noticed some Jarcat sixes have nearly plumb bows and a different cabin shape, but most do not. I know there have been revisions, mk1, mk2, etc, but the current website has no information on this. One ad for a Jarcat with a plumb bow described the boat as 21', not 20 (6m), and it does look a bit longer. Anyone know if the plumb bow is in the current plans? Jarcat 6's with nearly plumb bows: And the other variant:
And here I chopped some of the cabin off with photoshop.

Best bet is to speak to the Australian agent Don Nicholson who has great experience in Jarcats. He can be contacted via the Jarcat web site. Jarcats are very well thought out timber structural designs and any changes will often add work by needing reinforcing structures added etc. Also look at Richard Woods Chat 18 design, it may suit your needs. The designer of Jarcats died years ago and his son cleaned up the plans but is not involved on a daily basis in the design.

I see you have found boatdesign. I won't repeat what I said elsewhere. It is possible looking at the photos the boats you show with overhangs are actually J5s not 6's but I could be wrong. I don't know if the plans were ever changed there, my memory isn't that good, but it would be a trivial change to make. Part of the reason to keep people away from the extents of the boat is these are all very small light boats and will move a lot if someone is positioned near a corner. When I drew my larger hirondell size mini bridgedeck I had about a meter there. It accommodates the tillers nicely, moves the outboard forward and I drew sugar scoops, handy for getting off and on.

I do remember the mk2 J6 had the hatches further outboard to allow standing up in the hulls head poking out but for more detail than that ask one one of the jarcat forums.

Waterbear. If you can, contact a Californian guy by the name of Howard Spruits. He built the Yellow Jarcat in the initial set of photo's. He modified it from the 20 foot Jarcat to a 18 foot boat. He subsequently built a 22 x 8 foot catamaran for Skip Allen called a Frog 22 which uses some of the Jarcat build techniques.. Photo below with Howard standing in front. Skip moderates a single handed sailing forum where he give details of the Frog 22 and Howard's building input.

I think the plumb bow Jarcats are just j6's with some material added to the bow. In my first post you can see they don't trim flat (photos 2&3), unless two people are standing on the bow (photo 1). So maybe this is just a modification that is not fully baked. Also one of these boats is from Florida, the other is from gulf shores Alabama (which is on the Florida border), so perhaps the builders knew each other.

That hull is entirely my own work and I put a lot of thought into it. It is specifically designed to be built in foam over one reversible mold. Everything else is flat panel, but hopefully not too ugly. Increasing the length and beam of a mini bridgedeck by 1/6 gave standing headroom in the cabin and a massive increase in carrying capacity. That boat is 23' long and 9'6" wide so in queensland could be trailered legally. It would be a safe coastal cruiser. I abandoned it when I realised the trailer regs had not been standardised across australia so it can not be easily trailered in NSW. Blessed bother.

Oldmulti, I heard back from Don and he couldn't shed any light on the bows. Then I found the Yahoo group and searched for info on piccolo, and someone mentioned the bows being a modification. Someone else mentioned piccolo was built by Jorn Curtiss of Florida in the mid 90s. The yellow windowless boat came later so they must have copied piccolo.

Waterbear and Guzzis3. Glad you contacted Don, a good guy. Guzzis3 I know of a 22 x 10 foot cabin cat that is trailed in Victoria. All that is required is an annual daylight permit for Victoria, the same applies for NSW. Mike Waller yacht design studied the road rules on the east coast of Australia and designed the TC 750 a cabin catamaran that is permanently 25 foot long x 11.45 foot wide that fit the road rules with cheap yearly state based permits. I tow a 23 x 8 foot caravan around Australia and have no problems. It just takes practice and some sensible planning. Guzzis3 your design looks good I hope you build it, the road rules are not as limiting as you think.

being over 5 weeks in the Whitsunday Islands on The here in . During that 5 weeks we went into Hamilton Island and resupplied just once.
The Jarcat 6 is very light to tow, very stable and with a larger (18hp) can also plane at high speed (about 14knots) becoming a motor/powersailer.
We actually cruised in a number of different locations on a 4 month in total holiday as well as used it as our land based caravan/tent equivalent taking it into the central Australian desert and about as far from navigable as you can get on planet earth. is dried out in Hill Inlet (close to Whitehaven Beach) overnight and amongst huge schools of stingrays as the water retreated.
If you look closely at the last ( taken from a cave high on a close by hill) you can see the circling eagle. I think he must have though a meal of and dying sailers was in the offing.
The Jarcat 6 has a narrow but long double and two coffin style under seat berths, sit up at the kitchen on the double and we had a porta potty in one bow corner with curtain. Big open with a that made a great covered outdoor area.
Having recently retired I have moved up to a 28 foot trailable cruiser that is a lot more comfortable and a lot more expensive.
The Jarcats are however a great little light camping cruiser .

lover, and the math for a just does not below 30'. Either go mono, F-boat, or a cat where you live in the hulls.

If you want a , look at trimarans below 30'. There are many (I have an F-24).

, then a will do as a day . If you’re planning on overnight I’m pretty sure you’ll start missing a though unless you’re a tent camper.

You might want to look at the new generation of smaller cats if you’re willing to build yourself. There’s a plethora of really nice small designs out there by French and German designers.

goes in on an angle and can cut speed as you turn.
Heavenly twins is 26ft fairly slow, lots about
Summer Twins 25ft rare as hens teeth but actually a much bigger than the 26ft Heavenly it replaced.
Solaris 24 looks interesting.
But I think you already nailed your best option on the Hirondelle. They sail pretty well, and if your going to roll it up the beach probably your lightest option.
Other options a Tristar or Nougat, 26ft . Nougat is about as rare as finding a golden filling in a hens tooth. and you probably can’t even tell the difference between the two anyway. Both of which really can move.

WALLER TC 670 TRAILER CATAMARAN

Designed by Mike Waller

Our most popular catamaran design, the WALLER TC 670 was designed as an easy to build and sail multi-hull yacht, which could also be trailed by the average family car without the need for demounting or expensive collapsable trailers. Designed primarily for 2 people, the TC 670 is ideal for a couple, or a family with young children

tc670_01.jpg

CONCEPT The small cabin features a double berth, a good sized and easy to use galley, and a small table around which 3 can sit in comfort. There is also a chemical toilet beneath the foot of the double berth, and 2 children could bunk down in the cockpit under a boom tent. At anchor, the tent will turn the cockpit into a huge covered living area.It is also quite possible to add quarter berths in each hull under the cockpit seats for children. The multi chine hull (flat bottom with 2 chines) is constructed from sheet ply over plywood, with minimal timber framing. Construction employs the timber / epoxy building technique, is very strong to stand up to the rigors of trailing, and is simple and straightforward with the entire shell built as a single unit. When turned over, very little is required to complete the vessel. This yacht features a single centre board and rudder placed on the center line. On small, narrower cats, this configuration has proven to be most effective and efficient, and the lack of board cases in the hulls makes construction that much easier and quicker The rig is a simple 7/8 design, with simple spars and utilizing off the shelf fittings. The rig can be home built if desired. Particular care has been taken to ensure that this boat is both a safe and reliable performer, with an efficient sail plan and low profile for windward performance. Note that its intended use is sheltered and semi sheltered waters, and not open water. All sails can be reefed in a blow, and the yacht features removeable 'hobbie' style out-rider seats for sailing in stronger winds. For normal sailing these are unnecessary. The rig features an assymetrical spinnaker set from a bow pole, but a normal symetrical spinnaker could be used if desired
