Review of S2 7.3

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 57.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The S2 7.3 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.22 - 1.32 meter (4.00 - 4.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for S2 7.3 is 2.16, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for S2 7.3 is about 92 kg/cm, alternatively 516 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 92 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 516 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 15m 2 (161 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

S2 7.3 SD is a 23 ′ 9 ″ / 7.3 m monohull sailboat designed by Graham & Schlageter and built by S2 Yachts starting in 1978.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Rough day on the water yesterday. I'm a new sailor. It's only my fourth time to have her out. I've been on a bigger boat and this one sails differently. With a small keel it has to sail much flatter. I'll have to adjust and learn. Three of us friends had our boats out. It was cool to be sailing so close to each other. On the way back to my slip I was running the outboard and caught a rope in it. Damn the bad luck. No damage was done.

How is the interior? Hopefully not as bad as Traveller was. Looking back though, and having seen worse, Traveller wasn't horrible but I gutted it anyway.

I finished up connecting my mast electrical as well as all the running lighting. Then I figured that I'd sail. Fawk me. My outboard tore out of its mount and went into Smith Mountain Lake. 🤣 Fortunately I had a line attached to it. It was running when it took the swim. Seems to be fine after I pulled the plugs and exhausted the water.

Thought of making the new mount out of 316 stainless. Uh, that's not happening. For what I need it will be around $300 in just material. And, I don't have the equipment to weld it. Looks like it will be fiberglass again. Expect some build content for glassing this thing up.

S2 7.3 for Sail

  • Add to quote

Excellent boat for coastal cruising, day sailing and racing! S2 Yachts has a great reputation for making solid, safe and fast sailboats. The 7.3 is a 24-foot "cruising" model with a large cockpit, numerous big-boat features and a comfortable cabin that sleeps four. "Sweet Freedom" is a well-engineered boat with a roller-furling jib and all lines led aft into the cockpit, making it easy for one or two people to handle. She has a deep keel (with a four-foot draft) that makes her very stable even in strong winds and large waves, and enables her to sail upwind fast. This boat is fully-loaded with everything you need for coastal cruising, including: · Fully-battened mainsail with jiffy reefing · Roller-furling genoa · Asymmetrical cruising spinnaker and whisker pole · An extra mainsail and genoa · A spinnaker halyard and all running rigging · Cockpit cushions, bimini and dodger · Dock lines and fenders · Anchor, anchor line and a swim ladder · Life jackets, horseshoe buoy and throwable cushions · Flares, horn and all safety equipment · A two-battery electrical system with: · VHF, AM/FM cassette · Cabin lights and running lights · Ventilation fans · A small head with a holding tank · A small galley with a hand-pump sink, 15-gallon water tank and alcohol stove · A 9.9-hp outboard engine with electric start Sweet Freedom also has a heavy-duty, custom trailer (valued at about $2,000) with tandem axles and very good tires that tows well. The trailer has a slippery plastic board under the keel, along with pivoting roller arms (see pic), that allows the boat to eaily slide off the trailer. The trailer does not have an extension, but I have launched it numerous times on standard boat ramps with a two-wheel drive pick-up. Also included in the price is an 8-foot hard-shell dinghy that is almost new, and is a joy to row or tow behind the boat. Sweet Freedom was sailed exclusively in freshwater until this year, when I moved her Oriental, NC, the Sailing Capital of the Carolinas. Like most older boats, Sweet Freedom needs a few minor repairs, such as fiberglass and wood-work touch-up, and will soon need a few upgrades, such as a new outboard engine. (That's why I have listed her much lower than her $8,000 value!) I have owned Sweet Freedom for nine years, and enjoyed every minute. I am only selling her because I have recently started a business that I need to focus my attention on. Price reduced from $10,000 to $6,900! Contact Joel Broadway at [email protected]

  1. S2 7.3

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).

  2. S2 Yachts (USA)

In the late 1970s, S2 did start building powerboats again, and soon established its Tiara line. Slikkers was later able to buy back his old powerboat line, Slickercraft. Production of sailboats ended in 1989. Years in Business: 1974 - 1989. Sailboats Built By S2 Yachts (USA)

The S2 7.3 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim.It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a slightly reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel or optional shoal draft keel that was designed by Graham & Schlageter. 5. Review of S2 7.3 SD

The S2 7.3 SD is equipped with a finn keel. The finn keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.86 - 0.96 meter (2.82 - 3.12 ft) dependent on the load. ...
