Yacht life: Busting barnacles and more to keep her looking good

yacht life pinterest

Yachts by their very nature are big investments.

Beyond price, is the issue of maintenance. A good crew is needed to keep vessels in ship shape.

But time spent in the water takes its toll on a yacht's exterior. When that happens, it's time to call in the barnacle busters.

Visual journalist Damon Higgins recently caught up with such a crew working on a luxury yacht Aug. 13 at the Town of Palm Beach Marina. The team, from Riviera Beach-based Atlantic Underwater Diving Services, spent about an hour and 15 minutes removing barnacles and other growth from the vessel's hull.

"The growths create drag on the bottom of the boats that prohibit them from performing the way they are supposed to," said diver Robin Reed.

What are barnacles?

Barnacles ( Balanus glandula ) are tiny crustaceans related to crabs, lobsters, and shrimps.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) : "Of the more than 1,400 species of barnacles found in the world’s waterways, the most common ones are called acorn barnacles. As anyone who’s ever maintained a vessel knows, removing barnacles requires some elbow grease (or a pressure washer). That's why some boaters call them by their slang name: 'crusty foulers.'

"How do barnacles stick to the undersides of vessels, to other sea life, to each other, and to pretty much anything they come in contact with? They secrete a fast-curing cement that is among the most powerful natural glues known — the glue is so strong that researchers are trying to figure out how it can be used commercially."

Everything We Know About the Final Moments of the Passengers Who Died in the Sicily Yacht Tragedy

Five of the seven victims had been "searching for air pockets" as the luxury yacht sank on Aug. 19, authorities said

The luxury yacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19, resulted in the deaths of six passengers and one crew member.

Less than a week later, on Saturday, Aug. 24, Ambrogio Cartosio, the Chief Prosecutor of Termini Imerese, announced that Italian authorities were launching a manslaughter investigation into the sinking , and he identified all of the victims.

The seven victims who died in the tragic sinking were yacht chef Recaldo Thomas; British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah Lynch; Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda ; and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy .

As authorities attempt to answer questions about what exactly led to the sinking of the 183-foot British-flagged vessel — which went down during a "violent storm,” the Italian Coast Guard previously told PEOPLE in a statement — here is what we currently know about the victims’ final moments.

FAMILY HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock

During the Aug. 24 press conference, Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra, head of the Palermo Fire Brigade, revealed that as the Bayesian began going down early Monday morning, “It was quite clear that people were trying to hide in the cabins.”

“In the left-hand side, we found the first 5 bodies in the left-hand side cabins, and the final body on the right-hand side,” Fiandra said. “We found them on the highest part of the ship, which was closer to the surface. The vessel had three cabins on each side.”

The five victims, who "took refuge” on the luxury yacht’s left side, had been "searching for air pockets" in a final attempt at survival," he added.

As for why the victims were in the cabins in the first place, Giovanni Costantino — who leads The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the Bayesian back in 2008 — told CNN it was due to a “very long sum of errors."

"Everything that has been done reveals a very long sum of errors,” he said in his interview, translated from Italian. “The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And then why didn't the crew know about the incoming disturbance?”

Prior to the storm and subsequent sinking, some of the luxury yacht’s passengers were in celebration mode. They had been commemorating the recent acquittal of one of the victims, Lynch, 59, a source close to the survivors previously told PEOPLE.

Two months ago, Lynch was acquitted on all counts of a series of fraud and conspiracy charges he faced in the U.S. after a years-long legal battle dating back to 2018.

He celebrated the acquittal on the Bayesian with his daughter and his wife, Angela Bacare, who was rescued along with 14 others on board.

Also celebrating were Morvillo, 59, who represented Lynch in the case, and Bloomer, 70, who was a close friend of the tech entrepreneur.

The fallout after Bolt’s aggressive fundraising attempt has been wild

This past week was a wild one in the world of fintech as Bolt surprised the industry with a leaked term sheet that revealed it is trying to raise $200 million in equity and an unusual, additional $250 million in “marketing credits.” As part of this deal, Bolt wanted a $14 billion valuation bolstered by an aggressive pay-to-play type cramdown that would try and force its existing investors to cough up more cash, too, or essentially lose their stakes to a 1 cent per share buyout. Brad Pamnani, an investor who is spearheading the proposed $200 million equity investment deal, told TechCrunch on Thursday that shareholders have until the end of next week to indicate whether or not they plan to write checks into the new funding round.

Mike Lynch Yacht Update: Tycoon ‘Considered Selling Boat’ Before Tragedy

The tech tycoon was among six confirmed dead, while the search for his daughter continues.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch ‘s body has been retrieved by search and rescue authorities after his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm. He has been confirmed dead, according to officials.

But in an unfortunate turn of events, months before the superyacht sank, Lynch, 59, the founder of Autonomy Corporation, had considered selling the vessel but changed his mind after his acquittal , according to a report.

The tech mogul was among six people reported missing after the Bayesian , a 183-foot vessel, sank around 5 a.m. local time on Monday, August 19, after being struck by a tornadic waterspout during the storm. The boat’s chef, Recaldo Thomas , was also confirmed dead on Monday, while 15 others survived the disaster.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares , was rescued on Monday, but his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah , remains unaccounted for.

Italian Coast Guards carry a body on a rescue boat in Porticello harbor near Palermo, with a third body at the back of the boat on August 21, 2024, two days after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Divers searching for six missing people following the sinking of a superyacht off Sicily in a storm have found four bodies, a source close to the search told AFP. The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout. Among the six missing were UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy. (Photo by Alberto PIZZOLI / AFP) (Photo by ALBERTO PIZZOLI/AFP via Getty Images)

Massimo Mariani , an interior ministry official, told Reuters that Hannah might be inside the wreck or could have been thrown into the sea as the boat sank. A spokesperson for the Italian fire brigade stated that it could take days to locate the last missing person, given the challenges faced by divers working at a wreck site 50 meters (165 feet) below the surface.

The Italian coastguard also confirmed that the bodies of Jonathan Bloomer , his wife Judith Bloomer , lawyer Christopher Morvillo , and his wife Neda Morvillo were recovered after being discovered on the vessel the previous day.

Lynch had put the £30 million (an estimated $39 million USD) yacht up for sale in March this year but withdrew it from the market in July, the Telegraph reported. He had planned to spend the summer on board the boat and then review the decision to sell in the autumn, according to industry sources.

Following his acquittal, Lynch said he was “elated” and looked forward to returning to his family and his estate in Suffolk.

Lynch was a prominent figure in the UK tech industry, often compared to Microsoft founder Bill Gates for his success in backing innovative companies. His death comes just months after he was acquitted in federal court in San Francisco of criminal fraud charges related to the $11 billion sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

David Tabizel , Lynch’s co-founder at Autonomy, said, “It looks like we’ve lost our dear Dr. Mike Lynch. RIP. The world has lost a genius. His family has lost a giant of a man.”

Andrew Kanter , a close friend and colleague of Lynch, remarked, “He was the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known. Over nearly a quarter century, I had the privilege of working beside someone unrivaled in their understanding of technology and business.”

The guest list for mike lynch’s fatal yacht party was a who’s who of players from the autonomy scandal.

On board the doomed Bayesian superyacht that claimed Mike Lynch’s life were not only his family and friends but also crucial business figures who encapsulated the key phases of his career.

High-flying former employees at his tech group Autonomy, allies who helped push through its multibillion-dollar sale to HP, and the legal brains who defended him after that deal turned sour were all in attendance on the Mediterranean when it ran into storms on Monday morning.

Lynch was pronounced dead on Thursday after the yacht he boarded with 21 other passengers sank off the coast of Sicily.

He was celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges linked to HP’s $11.7 billion acquisition of Lynch’s tech group Autonomy in 2011.

Lynch was joined by his wife, Angela Bacares, who survived, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah Lynch, whose body was recovered on Friday morning.

Other passengers included critical allies who had supported Lynch through the tech mogul’s most turbulent period.

The getaway was a symbolic voyage on what Lynch had described as the beginning of a “second life.”

The coincidental car crash: Steven Chamberlain

Rumors have now swirled about the connections between the guests on the boat and the coincidental death of Steven Chamberlain in a collision with a driver in Cambridgeshire, just days before the boat sank.

Chamberlain was a veteran at Autonomy and went on to become chief operating officer at Darktrace, a company widely connected with Autonomy. He took a “leave of absence” to defend himself during Lynch’s recent trial in the United States.

Former Autonomy NED: Jonathan Bloomer

The body of Jonathan Bloomer, 70, as well as that of his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71, were recovered alongside Lynch’s on Wednesday.

Autonomy appointed Bloomer as a non-executive board member in 2010. He chaired the group’s audit committee during the HP sale and was a key witness for Lynch’s defense during his fraud trial in California. At the time of his passing, Bloomer was an international chair at Morgan Stanley International.

Bloomer told prosecutors that Lynch “wasn’t particularly interested in the finance side” of Autonomy, preferring to focus on strategy and the company’s products.

Lynch’s lawyers : Chris Morvillo and Ayla Ronald

Chris Morvillo, 59, passed away aboard the Bayesian yacht with his wife, American jewelry designer Neda Morvillo, 57.

Morvillo, a lawyer at magic circle firm Clifford Chance, represented Lynch in his criminal trial in the U.S.

He told the legal podcast For the Defense that the case “covered one-third of my career” after his first meeting with Lynch in 2012, as HP’s unrest grew.

In a rare LinkedIn post following the trial, which would also prove to be one of his last, Morvillo thanked his daughters and his late wife, Neda.

“I am so glad to be home,” Morvillo wrote.

“And they all lived happily ever after…”

Ayla Ronald, a 36-year-old senior associate at Clifford Chance, was also on board the Bayesian with her partner, Matthew Fletcher. Both survived the sinking.

Ronald’s company profile details how she also defended Lynch in his fraud trial with HP.

Extensive links to Darktrace

After Lynch sold Autonomy, for which he is reported to have received £500 million ($656 million), he set up the venture capital fund Invoke Capital in 2012, which would see his influence expand deep into the U.K. tech scene in his final years.

Invoke was an early-stage investor in Darktrace, now subject to a $5.3 billion acquisition from U.S. private equity firm Thoma Bravo. The VC fund also invested in British AI company Luminance, which closed a $40 million funding round in April.

Lynch and his wife Angela held millions of their net worth in their final years through Darktrace, with a source telling Fortune they collectively had a 3% stake in the £4 billion ($5.25 billion) valued company at the time of their passing. Fortune exclusively revealed the deal is expected to still complete later in 2024.

Several former high flyers from Lynch’s Autonomy days leaped into key positions at Darktrace. Poppy Gustafsson, Darktrace’s current CEO, was a corporate controller at Autonomy. In a LinkedIn post commemorating the lives lost, Gustafsson said "Without Mike, there would be no Darktrace. We owe him so much."

The links appear deep; Darktrace’s founding CEO Nicole Eagan also served as chief marketing officer at Autonomy, during the acquisition period involving HP. Neither Eagan or Gustafsson were on the boat, and both continue to hold leadership positions at Darktrace today.

Invoke Capital: Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski is another person with long-held business ties to Lynch. She is a partner at Invoke Capital, joining during its formation in 2012. Invoke Capital shared offices with Darktrace near London’s Trafalgar Square for a number of years.

Before joining Invoke, Golunski worked for Lynch at Autonomy and HP Autonomy for a year after the acquisition.

Golunski, 35, survived the sinking of the Bayesian alongside her partner, James Emsley, and their 1-year-old daughter. She had been asleep on the deck of the yacht with her baby when the storm hit, describing how she felt oscillations in the boat before it went down minutes later.

She told the Italian outlet La Repubblica how she held her baby above her arms in the water before she was rescued.

Six people missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and one dead after tornado sinks luxury yacht off Sicily

Rescuers were on Monday searching for six people – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch – who went missing after a luxury yacht was hit by a tornado and sank off the coast of Sicily, killing one of the 22 people on board.

The vessel was hit by the tornado at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard. The yacht was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello on the Mediterranean island.

Four Britons and two Americans are among those missing, the spokesperson said.

A source told CNN that Lynch, the founder of software giant Autonomy, was a passenger on the yacht. The source spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Fifteen people were rescued, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, and one child was airlifted to the children’s hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor’s office. One body was found on the hull of the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

A small waterspout – one of several types of tornadoes – developed over the area Monday morning, according to a report from the European Severe Weather Database. Other strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday, dumping more than 4 inches (100 mm) of rain in less than four hours in Brolo, east of Palermo.

The weather forecast had warned of potential strong winds, with storms across the entire southern region of Italy Sunday, the Coast Guard spokesperson added.

One survivor, Charlotte, 35, described how she battled to hold onto her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, reported Italian news agency ANSA, as a barrage of waves sank the yacht.

“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told journalists. “Many were screaming.”

The captain is among the survivors, the spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard said.

The 56-meter yacht called the “Bayesian,” which flies under a British flag, had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish and one Sri Lankan, the spokesperson told CNN. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told CNN two of its citizens were involved in the incident, but were not among those still missing. The nationality of the dead person has not been disclosed.

The Italian fire brigade said its divers had reached the yacht’s hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level, according to a press statement. The brigade also dispatched helicopters to bolster the search operation.

The captain of a nearby boat said he turned on his engine to avoid crashing into the Bayesian, Reuters reported, as fierce gales swept the area.

“This morning we got this strong gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” he told reporters on Monday. “After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment of the yacht, a source familiar with the operations told CNN. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not say when the team is expected to arrive in Sicily.

British tycoon among those missing

Lynch, the British entrepreneur missing from the yacht, had been plagued by legal woes since 2011 , when he sold his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion.

In June, he was acquitted of fraud by a jury in San Francisco, after prosecutors accused him of trying to inflate Autonomy’s revenue in the latest chapter of the legal saga.

He turned ground-breaking research at Cambridge University into the foundation of Autonomy, which became Britain’s biggest software company and a member of the blue-chip FTSE 100 index.

Lynch was lauded by academics and scientists and asked to advise the British government on technology and innovation.

Ownership records held by maritime information service Equasis show that the yacht is owned by the Isle of Man-registered Revtom Limited company. Revtom Limited’s latest annual return from April lists Bacares as its owner.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

CNN’s Catherine Nicholls, Benjamin Brown and Eve Brennan contributed reporting.

Investigators are considering potential manslaughter as they try to find out what caused the Bayesian superyacht to sink, killing seven people, an Italian prosecutor has said.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said "behaviours that were not perfectly in order" may have been behind the number of deaths off the coast of Sicily at a news conference on Saturday.

Investigators will focus on "the extent all the people [on board] were warned" of safety procedures, he said.

Responsibility could lie with "all members of the crew... the manufacturers... [or those who were] not surveying or supervising the ship".

But all lines of inquiry are being considered, including the role of the extreme weather that struck the area, he added.

Bodies found inside two cabins

Firefighter Bentivoglio Fiandra revealed that when the emergency call came in at 4.38am on 19 August, the yacht had already sunk and was on its right-hand side around 50m underwater.

As a result those who died "were trying to hide in the cabins on the left-hand side" of the vessel, he said. Alternatively, they could have been asleep, so failed to escape.

Tributes pour in for youngest victim; superyacht latest

Divers found the body of the on-board chef near the vessel first, he added.

Then, a rotating team of rescuers discovered five others inside the yacht - in the first cabin on the left-hand side - and the final one in the third on that side.

Investigators plan to retrieve the shipwreck from the seabed to be able to establish the circumstances in which the yacht capsized, the prosecutor said on Saturday, with the owners taking responsibility for the cost.

Details of distressing rescue mission revealed

Ashna Hurynag

News correspondent

For days we have been waiting to hear from those on the frontline of this rescue mission.

And today finally, we did. Speaking for an hour-and-a-half to the surprise of local journalists who couldn't believe what they were hearing alongside the world's press.

First-hand accounts of the gruelling, distressing and meticulous work that led to the discovery of the bodies of those missing on board the Bayesian.

Mr Cartosio said he had felt the need to conduct a press conference given the international interest in the event.

Flanking the head public prosecutor were representatives from the fire and rescue service and the members of the coastguard.

Some 11 highly specialised divers spent a total of 4,470 minutes underwater searching the vessels across five days.

By the end, there was little visibility in the water but they persevered and by lunchtime on Friday they had recovered the final missing person.

The discoveries of the bodies of all those onboard was difficult for divers despite their years of experience.

The foyer of the courthouse in Termini Imerese - a town just outside the Sicilian capital and some 10 miles from the scene of the tragedy - was packed.

Some 100 journalists on white plastic chairs scribbling away as details about the mission and the subsequent investigation were revealed for the first time.

The world's media heard the scope of the investigation was broad and that the aim of it was to find who is responsible.

Charges relating to shipwreck and manslaughter are being considered but nothing is being ruled out.

So far there is no indication it was anchored in a bad position, he added.

Water samples have been taken from near the wreckage and so far there is no evidence of dangerous hydrocarbons coming from the yacht, the news conference was told.

Hannah and Mike Lynch

Autopsies not carried out yet

Autopsies have not yet been carried out on the victims, who were retrieved from the wreckage between Monday and Friday.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, was among the seven who died after the yacht got into difficulty and sank as little as 60 seconds in the early hours.

The others included Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, American lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, and the yacht's on-board chef Reclado Thomas.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah was the final body divers recovered on Friday. Her mother and his wife Angela Bacares survived the disaster. Their other daughter Esme was not on board and paid tribute to her sister in a family-released statement.

The family is believed to have organised the trip to celebrate the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

In July he was cleared of 15 US fraud charges in a case that lasted 12 years and focused on the sale of his company Autonomy to US firm Hewlett Packard in 2011.

Prosecutors claimed he deliberately overstated the value of the firm he founded in 1996. Mr Lynch always denied wrongdoing.
