Italy luxury yacht victims died of ‘dry drowning,’ first autopsies show.

Initial autopsies of four of the seven victims who died when a superyacht sank in a storm in Italy last month show they died of “dry drowning,” according to authorities.

The phenomenon, also known as “atypical drowning,” means they had no water in their lungs, tracheas or stomachs, said a spokesperson for the lawyer of the captain of the Bayesian, which went down off the coast of the Sicilian port of Porticello on August 19.

There is no medically accepted “dry drowning” condition — “dry drowning” or other terms such as secondary drowning or delayed drowning are sometimes used to describe patients whose condition worsened after a drowning rescue or who had very little water in the lungs. However, the American Red Cross and other health organizations have recommended against using the terms; people may experience health impacts after being in water but it’s not the same as drowning, it says.

The cause of death of the first four victims suggests that they had found an air bubble in the cabin in which five of the victims’ bodies were discovered, and had consumed all the oxygen before the air pocket turned toxic due to carbon dioxide, according to local media reports.

The autopsies of American lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo, Morgan Stanley banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Anne Elizabeth Judith Bloomer were carried out on Wednesday at the Forensic Medicine Institute of the Palermo Polyclinic hospital, officials said.

Autopsies on British tech titan Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are expected to be carried out on Friday.

No date has been set yet for the autopsy of Recaldo Thomas, the ship’s onboard chef – due to the difficulty reaching his family in Antigua.

All seven victims were scanned for injuries last Saturday, which found none had suffered broken bones or other physical injuries that might have contributed to their deaths.

The prosecutor investigating the case first suggested earlier in August the idea that the victims had been searching for an air pocket.

The autopsies are part of the criminal investigation into the ship’s captain James Cutfield, the ship’s machine engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith, who was on watch the night of the accident. None of the men is in Italy.

They are being investigated for “multiple manslaughter” and for causing a shipwreck, but authorities say this doesn’t mean they will be charged with any crimes. They were allowed to leave the country by the prosecutor in charge of the investigation.

The 56-meter yacht sank within 16 minutes of being struck by a downburst or tornado on the early morning of August 19. The ship will have to be raised for the investigation and to ensure that the 18,000 liters of fuel onboard do not leak into the sea around the port of Porticello near Palermo.

Bids have been sent out for the salvage, which will be paid for by the company of Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, which owns the yacht.

Toxicology results on the seven victims are expected in the coming days. No alcohol or drug tests were carried out on any of the crew members, the prosecutor said in a press conference after all the victims’ bodies had been recovered.

Lynch and his business partner Stephen Chamberlain, who died after being struck by a car the day the Bayesian sank, had been acquitted of fraud charges in a US court in June 2024. The charges were related to the sale of their company Autonomy to Hewlett Packard, which has said it will not drop its civil lawsuit for $4 billion in damages now being heard in a UK court.

Cause of Death Determined for 'One-of-a-Kind' Chef Aboard Luxury Yacht That Sank in Sicily, Sources Say

Recaldo Thomas “was a one-of-a kind special human being," a friend said

The cause of death for chef Recaldo Thomas, the first person found dead after the Bayesian yacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month , has been determined, PEOPLE confirms.

Thomas died of drowning after the 183-foot boat sank following a severe storm on Aug. 19 , according to sources close to the ongoing investigation.

His body was recovered outside the vessel not long after the yacht went into the water, and sources say he had seawater in his lungs.

The chef was one of seven victims in the sinking, Italian authorities have said. Twenty-two people were onboard the Bayesian — 12 passengers and 10 crew — at the time. Fifteen of them were subsequently rescued.

The victims included Thomas as well as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer ; New York City-based lawyer  Christopher Morvillo and his wife , jewelry designer Neda Morvillo; and British tech businessman  Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah .

While Thomas drowned, testing is ongoing to determine if the six other victims, who were found inside the Bayesian after it sank, may have suffocated because an air bubble they were in ran out of oxygen and filled with carbon dioxide, PEOPLE previously reported.

Thomas' friends have mourned him since the tragedy. One friend previously told  The Independent  that he “was a one-of-a kind special human being.”  

Eli Fuller, another friend, told the BBC that the chef was somebody young children from his native Antigua looked up to.

"He was sought after," Fuller said. "The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man traveling all over the world — it was important for our community."

Gareth Williams, who had known Thomas for 30 years, said that Thomas lived in Antigua during the yachting off-season and worked in part to help his parents, the BBC reported.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house," Williams said. "He loved yachting, but he was tired."

A source close to the survivors previously confirmed to PEOPLE that Mike Lynch and the other passengers on the Bayesian had been celebrating with family and friends following Lynch's acquittal from a U.S. fraud trial in June. 

In the wake of the sinking, James Cutfield, the yacht's captain, and two crew members have been questioned by Italian authorities.

Authorities also opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck  investigation in connection with the sinking, but no one has been charged or accused of a crime.

Royal Hakvoort's 61m superyacht Asia delivered to owner

The 61-metre superyacht Asia has now been delivered to her owner, having departed from Royal Hakvoort 's shipyard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands today (18 May). 

Previously known as Project Asia, she was successfully launched from the shipyard's facilities in Monnickendam at the start of the year.

"Klaas Hakvoort and his brother Albert were a joy to deal with. They were involved every step of the way and this yacht would not be what she is without them," said the owner.

The owner also added: "Sean Moran and his father Robert’s meticulous attention to detail, engineering, design and construction has resulted in a vessel that my wife and I have dreamed about. Designed inside and out by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design , the 61-metre was sold by Moran Yacht & Ship in 2019 and began construction shortly after. She is the seventh new build Hakvoort project sold and overseen by the broker.

Originally known as Hull YN 253, Asia features accommodation for a total of 12 guests, including a master cabin on a private deck, with a stateroom, two bathrooms, a study and skylounge.

The rest of the guest accommodation comprises a full beam VIP suite on the main deck, alongside the lounge and formal dining area. Four additional double cabins sit on the lower deck, alongside crew quarters that comprise eight en suite cabins. A swimming pool, bar and sunpads sit on the sundeck, while the wheelhouse and gym are found on the upper deck.

Two large tenders can be stored in the garage on the main deck at port and starboard. The lower deck aft includes a massage room and Hammam.

According to BOATPro , Royal Hakvoort has two other yachts currently under construction, including a 45-metre superyacht designed by Hoek Design Naval Architects .

Alice Guo confirms leaving PH by boats, one of which was a yacht

Dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo on Monday said that they left the Philippines via boats, one of which was a yacht.

"Umalis po kami, Madam Chair, by boat po," Guo told a Senate panel.

(We left, Mada'm Chair, by boat.)

"Meron po kaming sinakyang yate po," she added, confirming the information asked by Senator Risa Hontiveros who is the chairperson of the panel.

(There was a yacht we boarded.)

After being pressed by the senators to tell more details about their escape, Guo said they climbed aboard the yacht in a port in Metro Manila.

However, Guo refused to divulge to the public the name of the person who facilitated their yacht ride and the owner of the same.

What she only recalled was that the yacht has "wings" stickers and numbers on it.

The senators tried to get the names of the facilitator and the owner by asking Guo to write it on a piece of paper, but she requested them not to divulge it in public.

Guo wrote the name of the facilitator of the trip on a paper, but she noted that she is not sure if he is the owner of the yacht.

Guo has repeatedly told the senators that she is afraid for her safety due to threats which she refused to divulge to the Senate panel.

After riding the yacht for a "few hours", they transferred to a bigger boat. She said she doesn't know the exact location where they made the transfer.

"Madilim pa rin po...Basta dagat po," she said.

(It was still dark. It was in the sea.)

After transferring to a bigger boat, Guo said they stayed in one room for days. She added that she was not aware of the time because they were told not to use their cellphones.

"Siguro mga four or three or five [days]. Basta matagal po...Four days po siguro... Hindi po kami pinapalabas," she said.

(Maybe four or three or five [days]. It was long... Four days maybe... We were not allowed to go out.)

She admitted that she felt afraid in the middle of the second boat ride.

"Kung puwede lang umatras, aatras na po ako...Nakakatakot po talaga," she said.

(If it were just possible to back out, I would have backed out... It was really scary.)

"Gusto ko na po umuwi. Gusto ko na po bumalik," she added.

(I wanted to go home. I wanted to go back.)

Asked why she did not return, Guo said, "Nagkamali po talaga ako (I really made a mistake)."

After riding the second "big" boat, Guo said they transferred to another small boat then proceeded to Malaysia.

"Paglabas po namin, may sinakyan pa kami isang maliit na bangka... 'Yung bangka po bumiyahe pa po kami tapos Malaysia na po," she said.

(When we got out, we boarded a small boat... That boat traveled to Malaysia.)

Asked about the location where they arrived in Malaysia, Guo said she doesn't know because they were instructed not to look around the places they have been.

In a separate Senate investigation last August 27, Guo's supposed sister, Shiela Guo, told the senators that they left the Philippines by riding several boats .

According to Shiela, the three of them were fetched by a van from their farm in Tarlac and they traveled southbound from dinner time to midnight.

However, she said she does not know the location where they rode a small white boat. According to Shiela, the small boat can only cater to around 10 people.

They then transferred to a bigger boat which Shiela said can accommodate many people. The second ship appears to be a fishing ship because there were nets on it, according to Shiela.

After riding what seemed to be a fishing ship, Shiela said they transferred again to a smaller boat.

Asked if the last boat transferred them to Malaysia, Shiela answered in the affirmative.

It took a month before the Philippine government became aware that Guo and her siblings had left the country in July.

Alice Guo is the subject of multiple complaints, one of which was filed with a Tarlac court, which ordered her arrest for her alleged connections to the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) in Bamban that was raided for illegal activities.

Among the complaints she is facing are graft, money laundering, and human trafficking.

The 73-year-old made a fortune in oil and gas before transforming it into a sports empire that includes the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. The father of famous professional tennis player Jessica Pegula saw many highs, but the one we like most is the $75 million Royal Hakvoort vessel named after the owner’s five kids. The tycoon, worth $10.8 billion according to Forbes, has shown the world how to have a fun time with family when you can splurge $500,000 per week.

5. Stanley Kroenke, Los Angeles Rams – Aquila yacht, 281 feet-

This 77-year-old sports mogul has been honing his business acumen since childhood. Raised in Mora, Missouri, he started sweeping floors at his father’s lumber yard and managing the company’s books by age ten. After earning his MBA in 1973, he met Wal-Mart heiress Ann Walton in Aspen and married her a year later. In 1985, he launched his own real estate development company, and by 1994, he ventured into sports team ownership. With a net worth of $16.9 billion, the billionaire now commands an impressive portfolio, including the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, and the U.K.’s Arsenal soccer club. A major landowner, with over 1.6 million acres of ranches across the U.S. and Canada also owns the majestic Aquilla superyacht with his wife, Walmart heiress Ann Walton.

This 81-year-old New York-born businessman founded Home Depot after being fired from a hardware store. Worth $9.1 billion today, the father of nine from three marriages retired as Home Depot’s co-chairman in 2001 and purchased the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons for $545 million in 2002. He also commissioned the massive ‘DreAMBoat,’ highlighting his initials (Arthur Morris Blank), built by Oceanco with interiors designed by Terence Disdale.
