The Best Luxury Yacht Builders in the World

With build times of around four years, it pays to know which shipbuilder is best for your dream superyacht.

By Kim Ayling

Black pearl - Hybrid superyacht

The superyacht industry has refound its mojo. Following the turbulence of the pandemic, yacht builders have resumed business as usual. Following recent growth in the UHNW population, order books remain full. New superyachts are rolling off the production line at an impressive rate of knots. If you’re considering a new superyacht now, you’ll be waiting over three years to take delivery of a ground-up build. Go with one of the leading yacht builders in the world, though, and it’ll be worth the wait.

This list of luxury yacht builders not only looks at what they have done in the past but also celebrates the stellar efforts they are making to reduce the environmental impact of their products. From lighter materials and onboard energy solutions to hybrid motors and marine conservation funding, these luxury yacht builders are not only leading the superyacht industry’s future but also protecting the oceans.

feadship project 817 superyacht

Recognized as a world leader in building pure custom yachts, Feadship has been in pursuit of building the perfect ship since its inception in 1949 – although the brand can trace its roots back another 100 years. With each new ship that Feadship builds, its team employs the most cutting-edge methods and materials available, which when paired with its unpromising attitude toward fulfilling its clients’ desires, promises to deliver some of the most technically advanced yachts in the world – including Project 817 , which has now been delivered as Viva.

Viva remains a groundbreaking yacht build, with Feadship revealing ambitious aims to keep her environmental impact as low as possible. The 308-ft eco-friendly yacht features an advanced hybrid propulsion system that allows the yacht to travel at 12 knots on diesel-electric power. The ship’s hull has been designed with efficiency as a priority to reduce the energy needed to travel through the water.

The Dutch company has locations throughout The Netherlands, with its headquarters and design and engineering center found in the northern city of Haarlem.

oceanco yacht builders esquel project on water

Dutch yacht building outfit Oceanco was initially founded in 1987 – but it was only in 2002 (when Oceanco found itself in the hands of new owners) that the switch was made to focusing on 260-foot plus superyachts, drawing on old-world Dutch craftsmanship to build the yachts of the future. The award-winning company prides itself on its design-led builds, and in addition to employing its own forward-thinking design team, works with industry-leader designers such as Andrew Winch, Terence Disdale and Sam Sorgiovanni.

Environmental awareness is core to each Oceanco project, with the aim of not only meeting but surpassing environmental legislation with each build. Even its largest yacht to date – the 394-foot Redentore, which is still under construction – is impressively efficient thanks to her hybrid propulsions system, which keeps fuel consumption to a minimum. Other noteworthy Oceanco’s builds are the striking three-masted Black Pearl , which is powered by a combination of wind power and electric propulsion motors, and one of its latest concepts, Esquel  – an advanced expedition vessel.

It has since been spotted in Italy, Florida and the South of France. Perhaps more impressive than the yacht itself is the support vessel (built by Damen Yachting), a 250-ft superyacht-in-its-own-right capable of carrying a wealth of billionaire toys including submersibles, helicopters and cars.

Electra Superyacht

Dutch luxury shipbuilder Heesen has received worldwide recognition for its engineering and design prowess since launching in 1978. Heesen proudly pioneers the use of aluminum, which is widely regarded as the premium yacht-building material thanks to its lightness owing to better efficiency. As well as full custom builds, Heesen offers a platform concept that features semi-custom yachts already under construction in order to dramatically cut down delivery waits, without compromising on quality.

One of Heesen’s most notable yachts is Alive, which was the first to feature the revolutionary Hull Vane technology (underwater foil) for greater efficiency and speed, resulting in up to 30% less fuel consumption than a regular yacht. Other celebrated Heesen’s builds are Home and Electra , delivered in 2017 and 2020 respectively, both of which were in the award-winning 5000 FHDF aluminum hybrid class and came as a result of Heesen’s strive to limit the environmental impact of yachting.

luminosity yacht benetti

Part of the Azimut-Benetti Group, Benetti Yachts can trace its shipbuilding heritage all the way back to 1873 when the Fratelli Benetti shipyard was founded in the Tuscan city of Viareggio – the center of classic Italian shipbuilding. While much has changed in Benetti’s near 150-year lifetime, its focus on building state-of-the-art yachts to impeccably high standards has not, cementing its status as one of the best luxury yacht builders in the world.

As concerns on the environmental impact of private yachts have grown over time, Benetti has adapted its methods accordingly, utilizing hybrid technology to ensure its ships are at the forefront of sustainability. For example, when the Luminosity was first delivered in 2019 she was hailed as one of the greenest superyachts on the sea. The 352-foot yacht features advanced diesel-electric hybrid power, with her powerful battery providing up to 12 silent and emission-free hours at anchor.

Of course, sustainability doesn’t come at the cost of style: the Luminosity features a stunningly designed interior courtesy of Zaniz Jakubowski, with full-length windows drawing the outside in, and tasteful nods to contemporary artists creating a true home away from home.

Europe rules the roost when it comes to the top yacht builders in the world – the fifth in our list hails from Germany, with eight yards dotted throughout the country including main sites in Bremen, Hamburg and Rensburg. As with most yacht building companies, Lürssen is family run having been first founded in 1870 by Friedrick Lürssen. Since then the company has developed an esteemed reputation as one of the best in the world, breaking many records along the way, including the longest yacht in the world with Azza in 2015, which measures 592 feet, and Flying Fox which is the largest superyacht available for charter.

Lürssen’s latest superyacht is the sizeable 465.5-foot Nord (previously called Project Opus). Nord transcends the typical design of a superyacht thanks to the work of Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard, which was responsible for the yacht’s striking interior and exterior.

As is becoming standard for leading yacht builders, Lürssen is acutely aware of the negative environmental impact of both building and owning yachts. It is taking appropriate action to help mitigate this damage, including providing significant funding to marine life charities and conservation projects and implementing pioneering technologies such as onboard compact silencers and hybrid motor concepts.

Royal Huisman

Ethereal yacht by royal huisman

With a history that dates back to 1884, Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman proudly stakes a claim as one of the oldest yacht builders in the world. While the company was originally founded to build modest wooden fishing boats, its operations have deftly grown with the times, and Royal Huisman is now responsible for some of the finest and most luxurious yachts cruising the ocean today.

Although best known for its stunning sailing yachts ( Sea Eagle II, Ethereal  and  Aquarius  are particular knock-outs) Royal Huisman has also successfully branched out into the world of motor yachts. Its most recent build is the 192-ft Phi,  which was delivered in 2021. This super-slick aluminum yacht has space for up to 12 guests and since her maiden voyage, has been seen cruising on the Thames through London’s financial district. An apt setting for a yacht of this caliber.

Damen Yachting

Damen Yachting, which falls under the umbrella of the wider Damen Shipyards Group, is another Dutch yacht builder dominating the world stage. Operating as Damen’s building division, Damen Yachting was only formed in its existing state in 2019 and is now responsible for the building of the famous Amels yachts, as well as the SeaXplorer expedition ships and yacht support vessels. Since moving its Amels building operations to Vlissingen in 2003, Damen Shipyards proudly boasts the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands.

As a company of this magnitude, Damen Yachting naturally has some impressive builds under its belt, including the newest in the Limited Editions semi-custom range: the Amels 60 . Currently under construction with an estimated delivery of 2022, the 197-foot Amels 60  uses a fuel-efficient hybrid propulsions system to slash emissions, cut noise pollution and minimize fuel and maintenance costs.

Italian-born Sanlorenzo is continuously regarded as being among the best in class when it comes to yacht builders and has been the recipient of numerous awards in its near-65 year lifetime. Despite Sanlorenzo’s longevity and established status, it remains a truly boutique luxury yacht builder at heart. To ensure the attention to detail and high quality for which it is famous for, as well as securing exclusivity for its clients, Sanlorenzo is committed to working with a limited number of customers each year.

In true Italian style, the superyachts that leave Sanlorenzo’s main La Spezia shipyard transcend trends; instead, they exude classic style and authentic craftsmanship. Combined, this guarantees a truly timeless finish – of which the current flagship Attila is a perfect example. Sanlorenzo specializes in fiberglass, steel and aluminum, ensuring that each owner can select a material to befit their needs.

Despite dating back over a hundred years, German luxury yacht builder Nobiskrug always has one eye on the future with a steadfast commitment to innovation. Nobiskrug offers fully custom yacht builds, working directly with owners to fulfill their unique vision, as well as working on ship refits. The company operates out of world-class yacht-building facilities in the city of Rendsburg, which include a climate-controlled superyacht hall.

The need to strive for innovation extends to Nobiskrug’s environmental commitments, where it applies advanced technologies in order to limit the impact of its builds. For example, Artefact – which was first delivered in 2020 – was one of the first superyachts to be built in line with the IMO Tier III regulations (which focus on reducing emissions). Artefact uses onboard solar panels and a battery storage system to allow for a limited period of engineless operation, as well as adopting a waste-water recycling system.

Popular Sailing Clothing Brands To Wear In 2024

These are the freshest sailing brands for nautical chic looks.

Best Sailing Brands

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Gaastra Online Shop

Whether you’re a seasoned yachty or just getting started on an aspect of sailing you need the right gear to get the job done and one of the most fundamental aspects of sailing is clothing.

When it comes to sailing clothes there’s no discrimination whether you’re racing in the America’s Cup or simply dawdling around in the harbour. Having the right gear can make all the difference especially when technical innovation comes into play to provide unprecedented levels of wind-blocking and waterproofing.

Are we the sailing types? Hell yes, we’re big fans of Sail GP, America’s Cup, and Sydney to Hobart, so we know what sailing gear you should be seen in. So let’s begin.

Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen

  • Clothing that can handle the harshest conditions
  • Timeless designs that never go out of style
  • They offer weather-resistant clothing
  • They are fully seam-sealed
  • They’re on the pricier side

In 1877, Mr. Helly Hansen saw a need for clothing that would protect him from the harsh Norweigan elements whilst he was working on his boat. His wife then started soaking linen in linseed oil to create a waterproof material that would protect Mr Hansen and his workers whenever they were out on their boats. They then started offering this clothing to others and Helly Hansen was born.

To this day, Helly Hansen has continued to engineer sailing clothing that can handle the harshest of conditions, enabling their wearers to work, perform and survive just about anywhere. Not only are Helly Hansen garments weather resistant, but the brand’s Norweigan heritage has heavily influenced their minimalistic and timeless, typically Scandinavian design.

Musto

  • The clothing is built for maximum performance
  • It’s very breathable
  • The items are waterproof and windproof
  • The fit is comfortable and keeps you confident
  • It can be harder to take care of

For over 50 years, Musto has been engineering cutting edge sailing apparel. Their sailing clothing has been used by adventurers, America’s Cup racing teams and couples cruising the world on their family yacht.

The brand was started by Mr Keith Musto, a British Olympic sailor who realised in order to win, he had to be lighter, fitter and stronger than all of his competition. After starting his fitness regime, he soon realised that traditional sailing clothing compromised his ability to sail at his best, so he set out to make clothing that would enable him to perform. As a result, he ended up winning the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in his Musto gear.

To this day, Musto continues to engineer fabrics and materials that will allow wearers to be comfortable in any condition.

ZHIK

  • Increased stretch for unparalleled comfort
  • They use outstanding padding to keep you comfortable in all situations
  • Original and attractive designs
  • The buckles are heavy-duty ones that provide extra comfort
  • They don’t have many colours available for all items

ZHIK was founded just prior to the 2004 Athens Olympics when it was noticed that sailing clothing could do with a spark of innovation. Since then ZHIK has engineered some of the highest performing waterproof clothing for sailors and has combined it with a fresh new look that is very modern, in a world dominated by tradition.

They are the kit of choice for both the Australian and New Zealand sailing teams and also sponsor Sail GP and Volvo Ocean Race teams, all of which need technically proficient gear that will handle any condition.

North Sails

North Sails

  • They recycle their old products
  • Versatile products that can be easily styled and used
  • You can choose from multiple colour options
  • They use the GORE-TEX Pro technology to keep you dry
  • The equipment can be quite expensive

North Sails was started by American Sailor and Olympic Gold Medalist, Lowell North in 1957. Originally he focused on making the most technically advanced sails that were faster than any competitors. The brand continues to make these ultra-high performance sails and has used their ethos to also create a lifestyle clothing line.

Their sailing clothing combines both function and form which performs in harsh conditions and looks great doing it. They offer a range of technical, high-performance gear as well as a more traditional lifestyle line so no matter your style of sailing, North Sails will have you covered.

Nautica

  • They focus a lot on design
  • They mix traditional and modern styles
  • The clothing is more affordable
  • Many designs feature zipped pockets for more security
  • Their clothing is not that technically advanced

Born in 1983, Nautica is a leading lifestyle brand for men. Influenced by the nautical lifestyle and designs, Nautica has focused more on making everyday clothing for men as opposed to other sailing clothing brands that were born out of a need to defeat the elements.

Whilst Nautica might not offer sailing clothing that is as technically advanced as others, their focus on design has enabled them to lead the industry from a style perspective. They combine both traditional nautical designs with a modern perspective and forward-thinking styles.

Henri Lloyd

Henri Lloyd

  • The brand relies on constant innovation
  • Their waterproof clothing is aesthetically pleasing
  • They use a non-corrosive zipper
  • You get 15% off on your birthday if you join the community
  • You have to spend a lot for free delivery

Henri Lloyd was founded by Henri Strzelecki a Polish war hero and Angus Lloyd in 1964 in Manchester, England. They pioneered the use of waterproof fabrics and materials in clothing. They also made other innovations including the first non-corrosive zipper as well as the use of velcro in waterproof garments.

To this day Henri Lloyd continues to innovate in order to remain on the leading edge of waterproof clothing. They also focus heavily on design and offer some of the most aesthetically refined waterproof sailing clothing available.

Slam

  • They collaborated with current and former Olympic sailors
  • Their pieces resemble an Italian effortless relaxed style
  • You get 10% off your first order when subscribing to the newsletter
  • Great when you’re about to face the harshest weather conditions
  • They use recycled materials
  • Some items run large according to buyers

Born in Genoa, Italy, Slam has evolved to be one of the greatest sailing clothing manufacturers, all thanks to their collaborations with past and present Olympic Sailors. Genoa itself is a town on Italy’s Ligurian coast and its history is heavily rooted in fishing, sailing and its port. Naturally, one day a garment maker would come about as a result of the town’s need for clothing that is suitable for life on the coast and at sea.

Today the brand offers a range of lifestyle and recreational sailing clothing which embodies Italian effortless cool. They also offer technical garments for those looking to face the harshest conditions mother nature can throw at them.

Gill Marine

Gill Marine

  • You get 10% off your first order when subscribing to their newsletter
  • They are backed by 45 years of experience
  • They offer excellent breathability and waterproofness
  • The relief zip is durable and waterproof
  • The ventilation is outstanding
  • Some pieces do not have enough pockets

In 1975 a passionate dinghy sailor, Nick Gill became increasingly frustrated with the lack of dinghy-specific sailing gear. To mitigate the problem, he founded a company and started to produce the gear he wanted. Since then, Gill has continued to evolve and develop to create clothing for all facets of sailing and all conditions sailors encounter.

Gill is the sailing clothing of choice for current America’s Cup champions, team New Zealand. To complement their clothing, Gill also offers footwear and accessories for sailors.

Prada

  • Fashion forward and super cool
  • Some garments are made from technical fabrics
  • No discounts
  • More for fashion than actual sailing

If you want to go big and be the best dressed on the yacht, then Prada’s America’s Cup range is the way to go. Prada is the official sponsor of Italy’s Lunar Rossa. One of the challengers in this year’s big race. Their gear is very basic in design but goodness it’s cool.

Regardless of who you’re supporting in Barcelona, Prada’s Linea Rossa range is the best.  Made in Italy, you can’t go wrong.

9 of the best yachting and luxury lifestyle collaborations

Invictus yachts and anna fendi.

In March 2018 Invictus Yachts and Anna Fendi, designer, entrepreneur and co-founder of the eponymous fashion brand, announced a new partnership which will see Fendi design a special edition of one of the builder's top models. While the project is being kept under wraps until an official launch on March 23, with only the cryptic image above released so far, it is known that Christian Grande will take care of the exterior design while the interior decor will be by Anna Fendi and feature bold contrasting colours and bespoke furnishings inspired by vintage voyages at sea.

Nautor's Swan and BMW

To mark the 25th anniversary of BMW Individual, the bespoke arm of the famous German car marque, in 2017 the brand teamed up with Nautor's Swan to create the BMW Individual M760Li. Based on the BMW M760Li xDrive V12 Excellence, the one-off model is inspired by Swan's classic sailing yachts with the Finnish builder even producing certain elements, including the car's teak boot floor panel, teak trims, entry sills and floor mats - by hand at its workshop in western Finland to ensure the M760Li has a true sense of yachting flair. The car's aesthetics are further enhanced by its damask red exterior and Merino leather interior in smoke white and Criolli brown, discreetly embossed with the Nautor's Swan logo throughout. On the technical side, a 6.6 litre V12 engine provides a sporty drive with an acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.

Columbus Yachts and Cesare Attolini

Bonded by their shared Neapolitan heritage, Columbus Yachts - part of the Palumbo Group - and fine Italian tailor Cesare Attolini unveiled their partnership at the Monaco Yacht Show 2016 . Finding common ground in their eponymous family names and their shared values of excellence, expertise and a wish to find custom solution to the problems of every client, the partnership saw Cesare Attolini dress Palumbo's Monaco Yacht Show representatives as well as display a range of nautically themed clothing on board 40 metre superyacht Divine . Just the first step in what the two companies hope will be a long and fruitful collaboration, expect many more exciting announcements to come.

Benetti and Kiton

Another collaboration between a builder and a fashion brand is the perfect demonstration of the way the yachting and luxury industries are intertwined. Benetti  joined forces with Italian tailoring brand Kiton in 2016 to offer customers a range of exclusive experiences during the Cannes, Monaco , Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong yacht shows. Each brand's top clients were offered the opportunity to enjoy a private visit to the Kiton premises in Naples and the Benetti yard in Viareggio as well as access to Benetti's Yachtique styling lounges to become fully submerged in the superyacht experience.

Trussardi and Dynamiq

In October 2015  Dynamiq  announced it would be working with high-end Italian fashion brand Trussardi on an exclusive interior design collection for the D4 series. The first yacht to benefit from this collaboration will be the 39 metre Jetsetter , the first hull in the D4 range, with options including chairs, sofas, carpets, fabrics, lights and décor for all open decks and guest areas.

LVMH and Princess Yachts

LVMH, one of the world's largest fashion and luxury conglomerates, acquired British builder Princess Yachts in 2008 and immediately put its high-end stamp on new releases. Those looking to buy the 30 or 35 metre versions of Princess' popular M class range can opt for interiors by Armani Casa or Fendi (pictured) and accessories from De Beers and Moet & Chandon, while owners of the 40 metre 40M class may also wish to buy the matching set of Louis Vuitton luggage.

Weyves, Thierry Mugler and Elie Saab

Working in partnership with luxury goods agency Agent de Luxe, Weyves Yacht has collaborated with not one but two high-end fashion designers. Created through the Wyves Couture Concept division, the first collaboration came in the form of an interior refit for the super fast Gentry Eagle  with French couturier Thierry Mugler in 2008.

A second, more ambitious project soon followed. Working alongside Dutch builder Oceanco and Lebanese fashion designer Elie Saab, Weyves unveiled the concept for the 117 metre Elie Saab ES117 yacht (Oceanco hull number DP095, pictured above) in 2010. The fashionable yacht concept has yet to be built – if it had been, Saab would have put his distinctive touch on both the exterior and interior design of the boat. A helicopter, submarine, car and water toys all signed by the designer were also part of the superyacht package.

Hermes and Wally

When Monaco-based yacht maker Wally teamed up with French leather goods company Hermes, they went as a far as establishing their own business – WHY Wally-Hermes Yachts – to realise their vision of a new form of sea-based luxury lifestyle.

The company’s initial concept stood somewhere between a private island and a superyacht with a length of 58 metres and a beam of 38 metres. Features included 900 square metres of photovoltaic panels for sustainable solar energy, a wide open-ended aft deck, Hermes interiors and furniture, a helipad and a spiral staircase leading to huge, airy living spaces. However, Hermes pulled out of the project in 2010 stating that it felt technically out of its depth and that it was best for the reins to be handed over to Wally. The yacht builder has yet to move the project past concept stage.

Riva and Gucci

As part of Gucci’s 90th anniversary celebrations in 2011, the Italian fashion house teamed up with Riva Yachts to create the Aquariva by Gucci. All boats are made to order in a custom design by (now ex-) Gucci creative director Frida Giannini which includes a mahogany wood interior, the iconic Guccissima pattern on seats and sundeck and detailing in Gucci’s famous green and red signature shades. Giannini also designed a Riva apparel collection to match the yacht which included duffel bags, footwear and numerous nautical accessories.

Best sailing jackets: From inshore to ocean-ready waterproofs

  • Rupert Holmes
  • November 21, 2023

The very best of today’s technical clothing is extremely good and will keep you warm and dry in all but the most extreme conditions imaginable.

Best-sailing-jackets

The massive choice of sailing jackets – and wildly varying price points – can be bewildering even for the most experienced sailors. This can make figuring out the best sailing jacket for your specific needs a daunting task. Of course, this is an easy problem to solve if you simply throw money at it.

However, for most people it would mean spending far more than is necessary and at the high end, some of the pricing is eye-watering. In any case, if the only sailing jacket you have is truly top-notch, you’re likely to wear it out in conditions that lower-spec garments could not handle as well. Although, it may not be as comfortable in ordinary weather as cheaper alternatives.

Gill OS3 Coastal Jacket

Specifications: Weight – 2,000g | Sizes – S-XXL | Choice of colours – 3 | Materials – Nylon, Polyester, XPEL

Reasons to buy: Fully taped seams | Hi-vis hood with 2-way adjustment system | Non-absorbent and quick-drying lining Reasons to avoid: In wintery conditions, you’ll want to add a base layer or two

Gill’s latest lightweight OS3 fabrics use a fundamentally more sustainable material than the long-running industry standard durable water-repellant (DWR) coatings. These have been used for decades to improve waterproofing. Did you know it’s what makes the water bead off a new jacket?

However, DWR finishes are typically based on fluoropolymers that have toxic by-products which persist in the environment. Instead, Gill’s OS3 range uses a plant-based finish that performs the same function as the DWR coating. Result!

The OS3 jacket is made of a two-layer fabric with a non-absorbent, quick-drying lining. It has a high-visibility hood, adjustable cuffs with PU inner seals, and an internal storm guard. It’s available for men and women.

Gill verso lite jacket.

Best sailing smock

Specifications: Weight – 420g | Sizes – S-XXXXL | Choice of colours – 2 | Materials – Polyamide, Polyester

Reasons to buy: Excellent light weight option | Excellent protection from water ingress | Packs down very small Reasons to avoid: Not suitable for very windy or cold conditions

There’s much to be said for the advantages of a smock style top, without a full front zip, as they usually offer better protection than a jacket of similar specification. The Gill Verso Lite Jacket is a slimline and impressively lightweight garment – the medium size version I tested weighs only 420 grammes.

The jacket is made of Gill’s Explore fabric, a two-layer system without a separate lining that balances outright performance against weight and breathability. All seams are fully taped.

Cuffs are lined with PU, which makes an effective seal using the Velcro tabs, but without the extra bulk and complication of an inner cuff.

While this isn’t the only jacket I’d take for a long offshore passage in serious weather, it’s ideal for use in more moderate conditions and packs so small it’s feasible to carry in addition to full ocean gear.

Musto Sardinia Jacket 2.0

Specifications: Weight – 652g | Sizes – S-XL | Choice of colours – 7 | Materials – Polyamide, Polyester

Reasons to buy: Mesh lined for enhanced comfort | Zipped side and chest pockets | Detachable and adjustable hood with a stiffened peak Reasons to avoid: Not designed for winter sailing so you would need to buy another sailing jacket

Economical and very lightweight is the best way to describe the Musto Sardinia Jacket 2.0. If you’re out at sea for daysailing in the summer, this is an essential.

It uses the same two-layer BR1 fabric Musto uses for its full-specification BR1 inshore jacket. It has a detachable hood, plus four pockets, including an inner chest pocket that gives valuables some protection from the wet weather.

On the downside, there are no hand-warmer pockets, the collar is not fleece-lined and there’s no inner cuff seal.

Nevertheless, its lightweight, packs super-small, is comfortable and doesn’t restrict movement. You won’t need anything better for many decent summer days and it can be worn ashore as well.

Musto BR2 Coastal Jacket

Specifications: Weight – Undisclosed | Sizes – S-XXL | Choice of colours – 2 | Materials – Polyamide, Polyester

Reasons to buy: Double storm flap | Fluorescent hood | Fleece-lined handwarmer pockets Reasons to avoid: At the pricier end of the coastal jacket spectrum.

This is an ideal mid-range jacket from one of the big-name manufacturers. The two-layer fabric has a significantly higher level of water resistance than inshore products.

The articulated cut ensures freedom of movement and there’s a double storm flap, fluorescent hood and high fleece-lined collar.

There are also fleece hand warmer pockets, plus two cargo pockets, an internal zipped pocket and a sunglasses pocket. The reflective detailing shows up clearly at night and there are double waterproof cuffs.

Zhik INS200 Jacket

Best summer sailing jacket

Specifications:   Weight – 510g | Sizes – S-XXL | Choice of colours – 2 | Materials – Vecta, Polyurethane

Reasons to buy: Three-layer fabric with taped seams | Fully waterproof and features adjustable cuffs Reasons to avoid: It is relatively expensive for a coastal jacket.

If you’re in the market for a lightweight performance sailing jacket, then the Zhik INS200 jacket might well be the right thing for you.

Lightweight technical fabrics are expensive and typically Zhik’s kit is therefore not the cheapest on the market. Nevertheless, the state of the art fabrics it uses and the high level of attention to detail rarely fails to impress.

The streamlined and minimalist look of the INS-200 jacket conceals many neat features. For instance the hood has a soft Spandex gusset that sits comfortably on the forehead and performs several functions.

This improves protection against water ingress, while sealing the hood against wind, making it feel much warmer. It also automatically turns the hood as you turn your head.

For offshore use, when extreme conditions may be encountered, you can use this as a comfortable option when under way in good weather and when going ashore, while reserving a cumbersome full-ocean spec jacket for use only in bad weather.

Decathlon Tribord Sailing Jacket Offshore 900

Best offshore sailing jacket under £300

Specifications: Weight – Undisclosed | Sizes – XS-XXXL | Choice of colours – 3 | Materials – Polyamide, Polyurethane, Polyester, Elastane, Rubber

Reasons to buy: Competitively priced | Developed alongside ocean racing skippers Jean-Baptiste Daramy, Achille Nebout, Romain Le Gall and Léo Bothore | Reinforced bottom for improved durability. Reasons to avoid: The women’s version doesn’t include a face guard

This French company develops and retails its own brand products, but doesn’t change its ranges unnecessarily merely to suit the whims of fashion. The result is long-lasting gear at very competitive prices.

This is the firm’s top-specification offshore jacket, made from a three-layer fabric with four times the waterproofing rating of typical inshore products.

It also has a high collar, adjustable hood with rigid visor, double sleeve seals and two hand warmer pockets. In addition, there are two cargo pockets and a further secure and drier pocket under the storm flap.

Helly Hansen Aegir Race Jacket

Specifications: Weight – 1,050g | Sizes – XS-XXL | Choice of colours – 2 | Materials – Polyamide, Polyester

Reasons to buy: Machine washable | Available in a wide range of sizes from S to XXL | Fully taped seams. Reasons to avoid: The large sizing prioritises width over height.

The Helly Hansen Ægir Race Jacket is the outcome of extensive work with professional racing teams who know what works best in extreme conditions, including Thomas Colville, Pip Hare and Joan Mulloy.

The result is a very high specification full-length offshore jacket that’s still surprisingly lightweight, streamlined and comfortable to wear.

A big element of the comfort factor is down to the choice of three-layer fabric that doesn’t need a lining.

The new four-layer fabric is supple and doesn’t noticeably restrict movement. Yet it offers a very high level of both waterproofing and breathability. It’s made of 50 per cent recycled content and uses a PFC free durable water repellent treatment.

best-sailing-jacket-gill

Gill OS1 Ocean Smock

Specifications: Weight – Undisclosed | Sizes – XS-XXL | Choice of colours – 2 | Materials – Nylon, Polyester

Reasons to buy: Ocean height collar with a concealed, wrap-around face guard | Shackle tool and PLB attachment point | Deep cargo pockets with secure closure and hand warmer pockets behind. Reasons to avoid: The premium features mean a premium price.

Did you know that smocks work much better than jackets for really serious work? Granted, they are not as easy to put on or take off, but the neck seal and lack of a front zip means they are intrinsically far more waterproof.

An additional advantage is that, unlike a big and heavy jacket, they don’t restrict movement which is a plus if you need to wear it while doing repair work on your yacht. The Gill’s OS1 also has all the elements you would expect in a serious ocean specification jacket.

Details such as the high-lined collar, first-class hood, hand warmer pockets and reinforced bottom section make it stand out from others on this list. It also benefits from neoprene cuff and waist seals to keep the water out in testing conditions.

Specifications: Weight – 1200g | Sizes – S-XXL | Choice of colours – 4 | Materials – Polyamide, Polyester

Reasons to buy: High fleece lined collar with storm flap | Competitively priced offshore option | Great reinforcement Reasons to avoid: Quite bulky so limits manoeuvrability

The Helly Hansen Skagen Offshore Jacket is part of the Norwegian company’s mid-level ‘Performance’ range and is competitively priced. Yet it shares ergonomics and features with the brand’s top specification Ægir collection that sells for two or three times the price.

The high fleece lined collar includes an effective storm flap with fleece fabric under the chin that maximises comfort and minimises chafe.

There’s also a two-way main zip, with Velcro fastened storm flap, plus plenty of reinforcement in high wear areas around the elbows and lower back.

Despite the obvious bulk of the Helly Hansen Skagen Offshore Jacket, articulated arms and shoulders facilitate ease of movement.

The high visibility hood proved effective and for night sailing there are six strips of retro-reflective tape. This is a feature that’s all too often lacking in other kit that’s described as being suitable for offshore use.

Detailing includes a big and obvious hanging loop. This may sound like a small point, but can make a big difference when coming off watch in the early hours of the morning on a boat that’s bouncing around in a big sea. On a late autumn day in the English Channel, with gusts the wrong side of 30 knots, this jacket was very cosy to wear. And the extent to which it eliminates wind chill is impressive at the price.

What makes a good sailing jacket?

My Gill OS1 sailing jacket, for instance, is great for cold and properly wet night watches , but the extra-high collar can feel claustrophobic in lesser conditions. For many people, it’s therefore a better option to start with an inshore or coastal sailing jacket and then add a high-spec offshore sailing jacket when it’s needed.

There are two key exceptions to this. Firstly, those who race offshore , where the weight and bulk of kit needs to be kept to a minimum. Equally, delivery crew will often be at sea in conditions that keep all but a handful of cruising yachts in port.

How to choose the best sailing jacket

How can you identify the best sailing jackets? Well, it’s not as simple as you might think. All have some features in common, including articulated arms for ease of movement, reinforcement in the lower back panel, handwarmer pockets, a quick-dry fabric-lined collar and effective cuff seals.

All the important brands have nailed the attention to detail at the design stage to ensure all the elements to work well while out at sea.

One important aspect that’s not often fully understood is the differences in fabric types. Less expensive garments usually employ a two-layer outer material, which requires a separate inner lining. This can make the sailing jacket more awkward to put on and take off and adds to the bulk in your kit bag.

Three-layer fabrics don’t need an inner lining and from a comfort perspective are therefore preferable to two-layer options. They also tend to dry a lot faster. This puts to bed the old idea that a heavy sailing jacket automatically offers better protection.

‍ 12 Best Sailing Clothing Brands

The best sailing clothing brands are the best for a reason, as they have been able to master what it means to sail comfortably. Not only are these fashionable, but they provide the necessary quality that you need out on the water.

Every sailor understands the importance of the right clothing while sailing. If you have never experienced what it is like to not have the right clothing out on the water, you do not want to repeat that process in the event of a sunburn, soaked clothes, or potentially slipping with bad shoes.

Musto has been dominating the sailing clothing department for the last 50 years. They have consistently developed sailing apparel that has stood the test of time in terms of quality and performance.

While they have casual wear, their line of apparel is meant for the water. This was the purpose ever since Keith Musto, founder, decided he wanted sailing clothes after his appearance in the 1964 Olympics.

As he drew inspiration from his experiences, he has created one of the revolutionary lines of clothing brands for the occasion. Musto is geared towards anyone willing to sail in any condition, especially with quality materials that are waterproof and comfortable.

2. Helly Hansen

Back in 1877, the Scandinavian brand Helly Hansen hit the sailing clothing scene. They were the first company to showcase a three layer concept, especially in times when the weather gets brutal.

The company has shown innovation over the years with quality products and coating them in linseed to obtain a waterproof product. These include shoes, shirts, hats, and even oilskin jackets.

Their life jackets rank among some of the best in the industry. In fact, they are the number one choice for fisherman or offshore sailors wanting to endure extreme conditions.

Looking at today’s style, Helly Hansen still markets one of the most recognizable sailing clothing brands out there. This is due to their comfort and style, in addition to the quality of materials.

Looking at Zhik , you know right away that you are in good hands with athletic apparel in sailing. The company is not that old, as they were founded in 2003.

The company originated in Australia and has its name essentially plastered all over the Olympics. The beauty of this brand is that they are able to cover every aspect of sailing and even innovative items like dinghy wetsuits that make them stand out to the competition.

They also have some of the most comfortable life jackets for a decent price. This allows you to get the best bang for your buck when sailing.

Their environmentally friendly approach earns them bonus points while also providing quality you can count on. If you are aiming to get out on the water, Zhik can make it comfortable.

4. Gill Marine

Nick Gill founded Gill Marine back in 1975 when he was searching for a performance dinghy sailing gear. At the time, there were not a lot of options to choose when roughing it out on the water with a dinghy.

Gill spent a lot of time and money to help establish perfect designs for dinghy sailing. This also has to be good enough to handle harsh conditions and whatever the weather throws at you.

Gill Marine was a success and is still widely used today by the New Zealand's America’s Cup champions team. In addition, you can find comfortable apparel options such as shoes and hats to sport the brand off of your dinghy.

No sailing clothing list would be complete if you did not have Dubarry on the list. While known for their stylish and comfortable sailing boots, they also sport an apparel line to keep you comfortable no matter where you go.

The company originated in Ireland back in 1937 and is closely connected to Galway’s sailing heritage. Their line of sailing boots are the main attraction, as sailors across the globe love their comfort, grip, and water resistant properties.

In addition, they also have a line of sailing gear that you can trust. With quality materials throughout, you can rest assured when sailing that you have the right footwear for the job.

6. Henri Lloyd

Henri Lloyd is another quality sailing clothing brand that has roots back in the 1960’s in Manchester. The company was co-founded by Henri Strzelecki who came up with the concept of a durable sailing jacket with Velcro fasteners.

For over 50 years, they have been providing excellent value for wanting to show off your sailing attire. From their quick drying tech materials to their ocean ready shorts, they have just about everything you could want to wear out on the water.

The company is handled by experienced sailors that know first hand what sailors want when sailing. This lets you know instantly that they understand what it takes to go sailing.

7. Saint James

Saint James was inspired by French Navy uniforms back in 1889. As one one of the oldest sailing clothing brands out there, they have successfully remained in business with their classic style.

They have a huge following in France, where the company originally took off, and have established some footwork in the United States. Over the years, they have been able to adapt to changing consumer tastes but also remain true to their roots.

They even have the nickname, “nautical sweater specialist”, for having stylish attire for when you are sailing. No matter how old you are, they have different styles and sizes for all shapes and sizes.

Slam was established back in 1979 and is a well regarded technical collection in sailing apparel. They have a wide range of clothing options for casual sailing, yachting, and professional sailing.

Being that it has roots in Italy, it is one of the most popular sailing clothing brands in Europe. In fact, they are one of the biggest clothing manufacturers.

Not only are their clothing options appealing to the eye, but it serves a practical purpose in combating the elements on the water. Their success has long been driven by Olympic stars, but anyone can feel like one once they purchase their gear.

Sperry has a reputation for being a top dog in boating shoes. In fact, they are given credit for being the first to develop a boating shoe.

Paul Sperry founded the company back in 1935 and put together a revolutionary design for his boating shoe concept. Today, they still rank as one of the best boating shoes on the market.

Sperry’s success stemmed from having a comfortable shoe that was reliable to walk on wet surfaces. No matter if you are a casual sailor or professional, Sperry’s are an excellent option.

10. Navis Marine

It was not that long ago when Navis Marine entered the sailing apparel scene. Back in 1999, the company put out their line of sailing clothing that was affordable, comfortable, and practical.

Although they are located in China, they are serving markets all over the world for sailors. This gives them a slight edge when providing cheaper options.

They even have over 500 options to choose from when looking at performance styles and designs. No matter what your budget is, anyone can relate to Navis Marine.

11. North Sails

In 1957, North Sails stumbled upon something big. Olympic Gold Medalist Lowell North founded the company that would eventually market to over 150 different regions across the world.

There are similarities when looking at other brands' beginnings, but North Sails managed to develop high quality sails at first. After that successful endeavor, they added a clothing line to the mix.

With a combination of the two, sailors can have excellent quality in their sails and have the clothes to experience life on the water. Depending on your tastes, you can even find clothes here to fit your budget.

12. Nautica

The brand Nautica was named after the Latin term “nauticus”, which means ship. They rank among the top brands for sailing clothing, especially for the men’s side of the brand.

The brand had a primary focus on fashion, rather than appealing to life on the water. Sailors could look great on or off the boat and feel comfortable.

They might be the only brand that caters more to fashion than solving problems on the water. Nonetheless, they are still a revolutionary brand for sailing clothing.

How to Find the Right Sailing Clothing Brand

There are a lot of variables that come into play when trying to find the best sailing clothing brands. These factors are price, comfort, and practical use. You might also consider brands that change with consumer tastes and update designs.

Reading reviews of different sailing clothing brands is a good place to start if you find comparable clothes. No doubt, it would be a good idea to compare your options before deciding on what works best for you.

You also want to consider the type of sailing you are encountering. For example, there is no need to purchase a wetsuit if you only plan on gently cruising on the coast. A wetsuit would be ideal for dinghy sailing, or at least something a little more aggressive on the water.

Price makes a huge difference in anything you decide to purchase in life, so the comparisons make sense in sailing clothing brands. Just because a shirt costs a ton of money does not mean it is the absolute best on the market.

If you do your research, you should be able to find competing brands that can offer you good prices. If something is cheaper with a range of reasonable results, then one brand could have a better sailing shirt than another.

Price may also indicate the quality of what you intend to use it for. Looking at sailing life jackets in comparison to the ones you find at a cheaper sporting goods store, it makes sense to buy the more expensive one that you know is designed specifically for what you intend to do.

In addition, it would not hurt to have a budget set up before you decide to buy any clothing brand. This way you will be better prepared to what you can afford.

More often than not, comfort trumps everything else. No matter what the price is, most sailors will purchase their sailing clothing for what is most comfortable.

If you plan on wearing something for an entire day, you want to make sure it is comfortable. So not only do you want a fair price, you want it to be worth wearing for many hours at a time.

Whether it is a long sleeve shirt to keep the sun’s rays off of you or a sailing hat, you need it to work as described. This also takes into account how reliable the brand is. Being reliable is another aspect that usually goes hand in hand with comfort in clothing.

Practical Use

You want to be sure that whichever brand you choose is something that you can use for a long time. If you plan on purchasing a pair of sailing boots, you want them to last a while instead of wearing out a few times at sea.

If you are not sure what something is used for, then reading up on certain apparel items is worth your time. This way you can find out exactly what you need and avoid purchasing things you do not.

You might find yourself buying an extra layer of clothes for cold weather sailing that you did not think about the first time. Whichever sailing you intend to do, make sure you research exactly how the clothing plays a role.

Updated Designs and Functionality

Some brands have a product that they have promoted for 100 years, while others constantly change up their lineup. A popular clothing brand has to appeal to what consumers want to wear.

For sailing clothing brands, there are some comparisons to be made but mostly these brands have their own niche. You can find a handful that still sport the same shirts over the years while others update their look.

The best sailing clothing brands know how to adapt to consumers tastes and what they need on the water. Brands that can improve designs to fit customers needs are definitely going to make them more popular.
