History of Evans Hotels

The history of Evans Hotels begins with San Diego natives and entrepreneurs William and Anne Evans who founded Evans Hotels in 1953. The company has been a part of the fabric of America’s Finest City ever since, with two properties on Mission Bay and one in the prominent seaside community of La Jolla.

History of Bahia Hotel

San Diego’s Mission Bay is today a picturesque landscape defined by waving palm trees, water sports, and white sand beaches – a vision that few people could have imagined back in the 1940’s. The as-yet-undeveloped bay, located at the mouth of the San Diego River, was then a squalid marsh-like area. With the support of San Diegans (through bond measures) and private enterprise lease-holders, City of San Diego Planning Director Glenn Rick hoped to turn the area into the nation’s largest “aquatic park.”

To accomplish this goal, the City offered several parcels up for bid, in the hope that various hotel, marina, theme park, and concession operators would jump at the opportunity to be the first to build on a new Mission Bay. But, in the early 1950’s, City budget-makers wondered who would step forward and take the risk.

William and Anne Evans journeyed out to the mudflats to survey the possibilities. “Bill’s vision was something I didn’t understand at first,” Anne said, looking back. “The bay at the time smelled funny. He drove us past the place where the Bahia is now and said, ‘I’m going to build a hotel there!’ I thought he was some kind of extremist.”

Become a Reality

The Evans family were awarded the first long-term lease on Mission Bay for a 14-acre parcel of waterfront property known as Bahia Point that would eventually become the Bahia Resort Hotel. Evans Hotels began when the first 52 units of the Bahia Hotel were opened in early 1953. By 1968, the Bahia had evolved into its present size of 312 rooms and one of Mission Bay’s most popular resorts. “It was incremental,” recalls Anne. “We were greatly in debt, but we grew like wildflowers.”

History of Catamaran Resort Hotel

To make transportation between the two hotels more convenient for guests, Mr. Evans made an innovative addition by purchasing a 45-foot ferry and reconstructing it as an authentic Mississippi-style sternwheeler, the Bahia Belle, in 1961. Rebuilt in 1981 to increase its guest capacity to 200 passengers, the Bahia Belle continues to shuttle between the two resorts on Mission Bay to this day.

Legacy Carries On

Following the death of William D. Evans in 1984, Anne Evans became more active in the business and added the two oldest of her five children, Grace Evans Cherashore and William (Bill) L. Evans, to the company’s management team. Their first project, a second sternwheeler, was named the William D. Evans in honor of the pioneering spirit of the company’s founder. Custom-designed and built in San Diego, the William D. Evans was launched into Mission Bay in 1986. The beautifully crafted 99-foot ship can accommodate up to 600 passengers.

Under the current management team, the company has experienced a period of remarkable growth over the past two decades. Both the Catamaran and Bahia saw extensive improvements, while a new hotel, The Lodge at Torrey Pines, was purchased in 1995. Located on City-owned land in La Jolla, one of the most picturesque resort towns on the Southern California Coast, the hotel overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is immediately adjacent to the 18th green of the Torrey Pines Golf Course (site of the 2008 and 2021 U.S. Open Championships) while the Torrey Pines State Reserve, with its beaches, golden cliffs, and rare pine forests, is a short walk away. Once a small 74-room inn on land leased from the City, the Evans Family entirely reconstructed the hotel between 2000 and 2002, turning it into a 170-room luxury resort. Modeled after the Gamble and Blacker houses in Pasadena, California, two of the best examples of early 1900’s Craftsman-style architecture, The Lodge has been awarded a AAA Five-Diamond ranking every year since it reopened.

Civic Institution

Ever the pioneer, Evans Hotels considers its role in the economy of San Diego to be an important part of the region’s future, employing almost 1,500 San Diegans.

Today much of the success of the City’s tourism industry can be traced back to that mudflat in Mission Bay where two young hoteliers saw the future. Now Anne Evans and her adult children, Bill Evans and Grace Evans Cherashore, continue to lead one of Southern California’s true success stories in tourism entrepreneurship and its hopes for continued success in the future.

Who Owns the Catamaran Resort in San Diego?

By Michael Ferguson

If you’re planning a trip to San Diego and looking for a luxurious resort experience, you may have come across the Catamaran Resort. But have you ever wondered who owns this stunning property?

The History of the Catamaran Resort

Before we dive into the ownership of the resort, let’s take a look at its history. The Catamaran Resort was opened in 1958 by Walter and Betty Zable. It was originally built as a small hotel with just 20 rooms, but over the years, it has expanded into a massive resort with over 300 rooms and suites.

One of the most unique features of the Catamaran Resort is its location on Mission Bay, which offers stunning views of the water and surrounding landscape. The resort also boasts several restaurants, a spa, and multiple outdoor pools.

The Current Owner of the Catamaran Resort

So who currently owns this beautiful property? In 2017, the Evans Hotels group purchased the Catamaran Resort from Pacifica Host Hotels. The Evans family has been involved in San Diego’s hospitality industry for over 60 years and owns several other properties in addition to the Catamaran.

The Evans Hotels group is known for its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness. They even won an award from the San Diego Green Building Council for their efforts to reduce energy usage at one of their other properties.

What Sets the Catamaran Resort Apart

While there are many resorts in San Diego, what sets the Catamaran apart? For one, its prime location on Mission Bay is hard to beat. Guests can enjoy water activities like kayaking or paddleboarding right from the resort’s beach.

The resort also offers unique experiences like a nightly sunset cruise on a replica Mississippi-style sternwheeler boat. And for those looking to relax and unwind, there’s an on-site spa offering massages, facials, and other treatments.

On the northwest shore of Mission Bay, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa attracts visitors looking for a bit of R&R. The property is visibly older than other modern luxury accommodations in the San Diego area. However, each of the guest rooms features a plasma TV and an iPod docking station. Still, some guests can't help but remark that the rooms need an upgrade. But the on-site amenities are better received, with travelers praising the Catamaran Spa for its soothing ambiance and its long list of treatments. Recent guests also commend the hotel staff members for their friendly nature and eagerness to help out. And for many, the resort's Sunday Champagne Brunch was a highlight of their visit. The property charges a $34 resort fee, which covers amenities like hotel-wide Wi-Fi access, in-room water and towel service.

Ukraine targets Moscow in ‘one of largest ever’ drone attacks

Assault on the Russian capital launched as Ukraine presses on with major incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

Ukraine

Ukraine has launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow, as it presses on with a major incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, Russian authorities said.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday that air defence forces shot down 11 drones over Moscow and its surrounding region, with some reportedly downed over the city of Podolsk some 38km (24 miles) south of the Kremlin.

Russia-ukraine war: list of key events, day 908, putin inspects troops with kadyrov on first chechnya visit since 2011, ukraine adopts ‘historic’ law to ban moscow-linked orthodox church.

“This is one of the largest ever attempts to attack Moscow with drones,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app. No damage or casualties were reported.

Drone attacks on Moscow are rare. Ukraine’s latest attempt to target the Russian capital appeared to be larger than an attack in May 2023, when at least eight drones were struck down.

The barrage was part of a broader attack on Russia, with the Ministry of Defence saying its air defence units destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones in total overnight.

In addition to the 11 drones destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 drones were downed in the border region of Bryansk, six in the border region of Belgorod, three in the Kaluga region, which borders the Moscow region to its northeast, and two in the embattled Kursk region , the ministry said.

Russia’s state news agency RIA reported that two drones were destroyed over the Tula region, which borders the Moscow region to its north.

Following the assault on Moscow, temporary restrictions were imposed overnight at Moscow’s Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports, but all three returned to normal operations later on Wednesday.

Reporting from the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Al Jazeera’s defence editor, Alex Gatopoulos, said given how well protected Moscow and other Russian cities are “it remains to be seen whether this is a departure or just a one-off by Ukraine’s military command”.

Lightning raid

Ukraine’s drone assault came as Russia struggles to push Ukrainian forces out of Kursk , two weeks after the surprise incursion.

Alexei Smirnov, the acting regional governor of Kursk, said one person was killed and two injured after a Ukrainian drone dropped an explosive on a vehicle.

Kyiv also claimed to have destroyed Russian pontoon bridges with US-made weapons to defend its incursion.

A video posted by Ukrainian special forces showed strikes on several pontoon crossings in the region, where Russia has reported that Ukraine has destroyed at least three bridges over the Seym river.

“Where do Russian pontoon bridges ‘disappear’ in the Kursk region? Operators … accurately destroy them,” Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces said on Telegram.

In a televised address on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the incursion was continuing and that his forces controlled some areas, but he gave no further details.

Hundreds of prisoners were taken and tens of thousands of civilians were forced to evacuate following Ukraine’s lightning raid on Kursk on August 6. Ukraine now claims to control 1,263sq km (488sq miles) of Kursk territory, including 93 settlements.

Russia’s electoral commission said it was postponing elections in seven municipalities in Kursk, posting on Telegram that the polls would take place once there was “a full guarantee of the security of voters”.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev , the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, promised on Wednesday that there would be no talks between the two countries until Ukraine is completely defeated.

“The empty chatter of intermediaries that no one had appointed about the wonderful peace is over,” he said on Telegram. “There will be no more negotiations until the complete defeat of the enemy.”

INTERACTIVE-ATTACK_ON_KURSK_AUG_21-1724246644

On Wednesday, Ukrainian forces said they had struck an S-300 antiaircraft missile system based in Russia’s southern Rostov region.

Ukraine’s military also said it had destroyed 50 of 69 attack drones launched by Russia during an overnight attack. One had entered Ukraine from Belarus and another had returned to Russia, it said.

Ukrainian drones had hit an oil storage facility in Rostov on Sunday, sparking a massive fire. On Wednesday, hundreds of Russian firefighters were still battling the blaze.

“Does this signal a departure in Ukraine’s strategic thinking? They’ve been targeting very successfully Russia’s industrial capacity to wage war,” said Al Jazeera’s Gatopoulos, adding that the output from the oil refinery was “down to a mere fraction of what it was beforehand”.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Wednesday that its forces have taken control of the settlement of Zhelanne in the Pokrovsk district of Donetsk, as part of an overall drive to capture the entire Donetsk region.

India-China diplomacy

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Moscow, the Kremlin said.

“Our countries have large-scale joint plans, projects in the economic and humanitarian areas, we expect them to last for many years,” RIA quoted Putin as saying.

Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping had agreed at a summit in May to deepen their “comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation entering a new era”.

After meeting Putin in July, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kyiv on Friday to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and said he will be discussing ending the war with Russia.

India has avoided condemning Russia’s invasion and is the world’s largest buyer of Russian weapons .

Legends of the Metropol: the Tsarist hotel that preserved its luxury through Soviet times

catamaran hotel history

Many famous politicians and popstars, monarchs and presidents, poets and artists, movie stars and ballet dancers have stayed in the Metropol Hotel during its long history, from Bernard Shaw and Bertolt Brecht, to Michael Jackson, David Bowie, and Sophia Loren. The public is even welcome to view the stunning interior of the Metropol during a tour every Sunday.

Metropol myths

catamaran hotel history

“Several years ago we had an American writer, Amor Towles, who stayed in the Metropol for several months in order to write a book of fiction, ‘A Gentleman in Moscow,’ about a Russian aristocrat imprisoned to life in a small attic of the Metropol Hotel,” my Metropol guide for the day, tells me.

“The novel was published in 2016 and instantly became a bestseller in the U.S. From this point on, we have had dozens of American tourists every week coming with this book and trying to see the attic where the main hero lives, but we don’t have one, it’s an entire fantasy of the author. But even without the attic nobody leaves disappointed.”

catamaran hotel history

There are many memoires, books, documentaries, and feature films dedicated to the Metropol all over the world and they all create a certain image of the place - sometimes far departed from reality.

catamaran hotel history

Funded by the Russian merchant Savva Mamontov, the hotel was built in 1905. Several architects worked on the project: Leo Kekushev, one of the best specialists on Moscow’s modern art scene, started the project. William Walcot, his British colleague, took over before a group of completely different architects took the helm and completed the iconic building.

No expenses were spared in making the structure rock solid. This was evident when, shortly after the Revolution, Russian junkers fighting the Bolsheviks used the Metropol as a stronghold due to its thick walls. They holed up in the hotel for an entire week before artillery fire forced them to surrender - but the structure survived relatively undamaged.

catamaran hotel history

As legend has it, Mamontov was struck by a fascinating idea - he wanted to replicate Mikhail Vrubel's famous “Princess of Dreams” painting as a ceramic mosaic and display it for the public. The version of Vrubel's work, depicting a dying young knight and a princess hovering over him, is now on permanent display on the hotel’s exterior. It demonstrates one of Mamontov’s principles: To bring art to the streets.

Mamontov even wanted the hotel to be an opera house and envisaged the famous Russian singer Feador Chaliapin performing there, but sadly this never materialized.

From Michael Jackson to Lee Harvey Oswald

catamaran hotel history

About 80 percent of the hotel’s interior design dates back to the Russian Empire and has been carefully preserved. The luxurious fixtures and style that survived the 1917 Revolution and Soviet Union - largely thanks to the “hotel for foreigners” status is acquired early on - makes the places truly unique. The hotel has 351 rooms, both new and old.

catamaran hotel history

“This chair and table were used by Michael Jackson, when he stayed here,” explains the guide, showing me one of the hotel’s largest modern suites. When the guests come to see this room, they often ask if they can sit in the chair. The room also has a piano used by Jackson; apparently he used it to compose his “Stranger in Moscow” track.

catamaran hotel history

I asked my guide about the room where John F. Kennedy’s killer - Lee Harvey Oswald - once stayed. She was astonished. At that very moment - and by complete coincidence  - we were standing right in front of that very room, number 2219. Oswald had asked for Russian citizenship but had no luck, he then tried to commit suicide before spending three long months in the room waiting to see if his reapplication would be successful.

catamaran hotel history

There is a cozy, elegant room, made in green and gold tones. The room boasts a view of the Bolshoi theatre, world-famous Russian ballerina Diana Vishneva's favorite establishment. When she comes from Saint Petersburg to Moscow to perform at the Bolshoi theatre, she often stays there. There are many more rooms in the hotel kept warm for their regular visitors.

catamaran hotel history

Some rooms   even  have important historical value. Room 2217 is a legendary place, in which the first constitution of the Soviet Union was written. The people working on it were locked in there by Yakov Sverdlov and did not have the right to leave without finishing it. The work was done in a few days.

If you want to have a look at the hotel rooms, hideouts and more, the Metropol is open for everybody: You can come to the excursion that takes place every   Sunday   (Teatralniy   Proez d, 2, Moscow, Russia ). Settling down in a luxurious room with a view of Red Square might be an option as well.

India’s Modi visits Ukraine this week, after a recent trip to Moscow. Here’s what it could mean.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meet at the Grand Prince Hotel, during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, May 20, 2023.

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a historic visit Friday to Ukraine, a month and a half after he traveled to Moscow to hold talks with President Vladimir Putin.

Officials in India and Ukraine have said the visit will focus on boosting economic ties and cooperation in defense, science and technology.

But analysts say the visit could also be an attempt to have India strike a more neutral stance after what has been seen as a lean toward Russia, given Modi’s recent Moscow visit, his country’s historic, Cold War-era relationship with Russia and New Delhi’s avoidance of directly criticizing Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Why is Modi visiting Ukraine?

Modi’s landmark visit is the first to Ukraine from a prime minister of India since the country established diplomatic relations with Ukraine over 30 years ago. He will arrive in Kyiv after a two-day visit to Poland.

Analysts say the timing of the trip is aimed at controlling fallout from the Indian leader's July 8-9 trip to Russia.

That trip coincided with a NATO leaders gathering in Washington and Russian missile strikes on a hospital in Ukraine that killed scores of people, drawing strong criticism from Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian leader called Modi’s meeting “a huge disappointment” and “a devastating blow to peace efforts” after the Indian leader was seen hugging Putin.

While Modi did not address the missile strikes directly, he alluded to the bloodshed while sitting next to Putin, and condemned any attack that harms innocent people.

This week’s Ukraine trip represents India “trying to balance the situation” after being seen as “tilting towards Russia,” said K C Singh, a strategic affairs expert and former diplomat.

Indian officials are downplaying any connections with the Moscow trip. “This is not a zero-sum game ... these are independent, broad ties,” Secretary (West) Tanmaya Lal said this week.

Despite pressure from the West, New Delhi has refrained from condemning Russia’s invasion or voting against it in U.N. resolutions. It has avoided taking sides and urged Ukraine and Russia to resolve the conflict through dialogue.

“Modi’s visit is designed to some extent to show that New Delhi’s strategic orientation remains non-alignment, and as such, to keep balance in its foreign policy,” said Derek Grossman, an Indo-Pacific analyst at the RAND Corporation.

What are India’s ties to Russia?

India and Russia have had strong ties since the Cold War, and New Delhi’s importance as a key trading partner for Moscow has grown since the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

India has joined China in becoming a key buyer of Russian oil following sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies that shut most Western markets off to Russian exports.

Modi’s visit to Moscow was seen by analysts as reinforcing their partnership, especially since Russia remains a crucial trade and defense partner. Some 60% of India’s military systems and hardware is of Russian origin, and New Delhi now gets more than 40% of its oil imports from Russia.

Trade between the two has also seen a sharp increase, touching close to $65 billion in the 2023-24 financial year, according to India’s foreign ministry.

What about India’s ties to Ukraine?

Bilateral trade between India and Ukraine is much lower, at about at $3 billion before the invasion, but Modi and Zelenskyy have interacted since at the sidelines of global events and the Ukrainian foreign minister also visited New Delhi earlier this year.

India has also provided several consignments of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine since the invasion.

Analysts say Zelenskyy is unlikely to raise Modi’s meeting with Putin - at least publicly.

But Modi’s Moscow visit and the India-Russia relationship will be a “strong undertone” to his Ukraine trip, even if it not explicitly mentioned in public statements, added Chietigj Bajpaee, who researches South Asia at the Chatham House think tank.

How will this trip be perceived?

The trip is likely to be well-received in the U.S. and other Western countries that had been critical of Modi's meeting with Putin in July, Grossman said.

For Modi, this trip is an opportunity “to engage Zelenskyy and secure Indian interests there, push back against Russian overreach and placate the West,” Grossman added.

But while the trip will offer some reassurance to the West, it will remain clear that India maintains a closer relationship with Moscow and “Modi’s visit will not change this perception,” Bajpaee said.

Modi is unlikely to use this visit to seek a role for India as a peacemaker in the conflict, which some had speculated it would do at the onset of the war given New Delhi’s ties to Russia and emerging stature globally.

“Indian behavior… has been to try to stay out of resolving it, and to only occasionally comment against further aggression,” said Grossman, adding that India — unlike China or Turkey — hasn’t come forward with a peace plan, for example.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin will be observing Modi’s visit, “but short of any statements that are highly critical of Russia, it is unlikely to be concerned,” Bajpaee said.

Bahia Resort Hotel history

Bahia resort hotel company history timeline.

But, in the early 1950’s, City budget-makers wondered who would step forward and take the risk.

By 1953, the Bahia Resort Hotel’s first 52 units were open and attracting visitors.

The Evans family then acquired the right to develop land at the northwest corner of Mission Bay in 1958 for the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa.

Upon its completion in 1959, the Catamaran was added to the family of Evans Hotels.

Evans made an innovative addition by purchasing a 45-foot ferry and reconstructing it as an authentic Mississippi-style sternwheeler, the Bahia Belle, in 1961.

Initially an 82-room inn, expansion of the hotel began in 1968 with the construction of the 13-story, 160-guestroom tower.

1986 The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa expands with the addition of the 300, 400, 600, 700, and 800 buildings, bringing the room count to the current 310.

Custom-designed and built in San Diego, the William D. Evans was launched into Mission Bay in 1986.

Both the Catamaran and Bahia saw extensive improvements, while a new hotel, The Lodge at Torrey Pines, was purchased in 1995.

2001 The beginning of a great summer tradition in San Diego occurs with the first Catamaran Sunset Luau.

2005 The South Pacific-inspired Catamaran Spa opens with 10 treatment rooms, relaxation lounge, steam room, sauna, men’s and women’s locker rooms, and a whirlpool and fitness center that overlook Mission Bay.
