Ever Thought of Cruising the World?

Expedition yacht Dione Sky

She splashed with the thunder of immense potential at the Palmer Johnson shipyard in 1996, a Vripack-designed yacht built specifically for expeditions to the world’s least-visited cruising grounds. It didn’t take long for her to fulfill the owner’s vision and then some, among other things becoming the first motoryacht to circumnavigate North America unaided, with a Northwest Passage transit in 2001.

Her original nameplate, Turmoil , seemed utterly nonsensical. She proved as solid, strong and steady as a yacht could be. Now called Dione Sky after an interlude as Putty VI , this 151-footer is a veteran of multiple circumnavigations, nearly 200,000 miles of trouble-free cruising and a series of three owners who kept her in the kind of condition that you’d want if you were somewhere off the coast of Alaska or Patagonia.

The biggest refit of Dione Sky was in 2007, a near rebuild in Holland that included a new air-conditioning system, a new engine room firefighting system, the addition of Naiad zero-speed stabilizers, a sundeck makeover, the installation of VSAT and Wi-Fi, an upgraded audiovisual system and more. The current owner continued the upkeep during refits at the Derecktor yards in Connecticut and Florida during 2010-11, replacing her generators, pulling her shafts and rudders to fit new bearings, cleaning her tanks and more. In March 2013, her twin 820-hp Caterpillar 3508 DITA C engines were rebuilt to Caterpillar zero-time specs.

“She has never been chartered, and she’s had excellent owners with no expense spared,” says Ann Casebourne, owner of Yacht Connection Ltd., which has listed_ Dione Sky_ for sale on the brokerage market at $18.9 million. “They put maintenance before the bottom line. Interest in expedition yachts is picking up, and she’s ready to go right now. She doesn’t need rebuilding. She doesn’t need refitting. She needs an owner who is tired of sitting around St. Tropez.”

And while Dione Sky has a no-nonsense exterior and systems, her interior is as classically elegant as you’ll find, with rich cherry woodwork everywhere from the owner’s deck to the paneled library walls. She accommodates 10 guests, including the owner on an entire owner’s deck that includes a private sundeck. There are also cabins for eight crew.

Dione Sky is currently lying in Barcelona, waiting for her fourth owner to create the next chapters in her storied cruising history.

“The perfect owner would be a bit adventurous,” Casebourne says. “She needs someone who is looking for a turnkey yacht to go a bit farther than the norm in safety and comfort.”

‘Pioneer’ is a 150.92ft  /46m  Custom expedition yacht built in 1996 by Palmer Johnson and last refitted in 2015. Her stylish exterior is the work of Vripack, and she was previously named Dione Sky.  Her interior design is by Axel Vervoordt, and she is a great example of a modern charter yacht.

Pioneer’s spacious interior layout sleeps up to 10 guests in 5 rooms, including a master suite, She is also capable of carrying up to 8 crew members onboard to ensure you and your guests get the most out of your luxury charter vacation, making full use of all the amenities and leisure facilities onboard this vessel.

Her impressive leisure and entertainment facilities make her perfect for entertaining friends and family on your charter vacation. There’s space for enjoying lavish lunches, delicious dinners on deck, or simply lounging in the sunshine. You’ll find an upper level deck ideal for checking out the view, and you can’t help but love her classic interior.

She is built with an aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, and is built to comply to both MCA and ABS standards. She has a cruising speed of 11 knots, a maximum speed of 14 knots and a range of 8,000nm from 161,967litre fuel tanks, so is a classic example of style and performance.

A deck Jacuzzi is just perfect for relaxing with friends and family, while taking in the breath-taking views after a long day of exploration.

You’ll find Wi-Fi connection throughout, so you’ll be able to check emails or share your experience on social media. Air conditioning keeps conditions comfortable throughout the cabins, even on the hottest of days or nights.

A portfolio of toys onboard include 2 x 3 seat Yamaha Waverunners, Scuba Diving Equipment, 2 x 2 Person Kayaks, 2 x Paddleboards, Towable Toys, and Doughnut, so you’ll keep guests of all ages entertained.

Yachts for sale at the Palma Superyacht Show

Organised by the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association, in partnership with MYBA, the second Palma Superyacht Show takes place from April 30th to May 4th. With a record 55 yachts on display both power and sail this represents an ideal opportunity to see what the Mediterranean yacht brokers have to offer interested buyers. Here we select five of the yachts on display and currently for sale.

One of the largest yachts on display, the 48.4m sailing yacht Thalia is offered for sale by Yachtzoo asking $14 million. Designed by Ron Holland, she was built by Holland's Vitters Shipyard and delivered in 1994 with a complete refit in 2008. A spacious main deck saloon with panoramic windows opens out to a large sheltered deck area with a retractable blind.

Expansive mahogany panelling and marble showers in the staterooms contribute to the boat's elegant and stylish interior ambience. The interior design is by Elmar Meurer, and she accommodates 11 guests in a master suite and four twin staterooms plus two Pullman berths.

Yacht Connections is bringing the all-aluminium 46m expedition yacht Dione Sky to the show, priced at $17.5 million. Custom built in the US by Palmer Johnson to ABS class, she was launched in 1996 as Turmoil. Under her present owner she made an impressive figure of eight passage around North and South America a feat recognised by the award of the Voyager's Trophy at the 2011 World Superyacht Awards. In all, she has logged nearly 200,000 nautical miles since launch and made a successful transit of the North West Passage in 2001. Her rugged appearance belies a stunning, elegant interior in American cherry wood.

MCA compliant, Dione Sky has accommodation for 10 guests in a master suite, two double staterooms and two twin cabins, all en suite. She received an extensive refit/rebuild in 2007. Twin 819hp Caterpillar engines give her a cruising speed of 12 knots and a range of 7,000 nautical miles. Both engines were completely rebuilt in early 2013 meaning that Dione Sky is now ready for more worldwide adventures.

McMaster Yachts has joined forces with Burgess to showcase the 40m sailing yacht Tenaz priced at £4,995,000. Tenaz was built as Mamamouchi by British yard Pendennis to ABS class and MCA compliant and launched in 1996 with an extensive refit in 2010. She went on to win the Voyager award at the 2010 World Superyacht Awards.

Tenaz is offered in immaculate condition with all the benefit of a refit where the mechanics and infrastructure have been comprehensively upgraded and replaced where necessary. She has a sleek profile which gives wonderful visibility forward from her huge cockpit and has earned a superb reputation for her performance under sail.

Fraser Yachts will be displaying the 30.48m sailing yacht Garuda , currently for sale at 1.55 million. Her naval architecture is by Ron Holland with styling by Jon Bannenberg and she was built as an ABS classed Swan 100 model sailing yacht by Nautor's Swan with a launch in 1986. This 165 ton superyacht can accommodate six guests in one master and two twin cabins, while a 550hp Mercedes-Wizemann diesel engine offers a cruising speed of 10 knots with a maximum speed of 13 knots.

Garuda was refitted in 2012 including a fresh paint job and has had only light use since.

Ocean Independence and dahm international are exhibiting the 29m sailing yacht Scorpione dei Mari , listed for sale at 5.45 million. She was built in aluminium by Jongert to a Tony Castro design and launched in 2005, becoming a proven regatta winner. Accommodation is for up to seven guests in an owner's cabin and two twins with a Pullman berth. As a bonus, she comes complete with a full racing and cruising sail inventory and has been well maintained throughout her history, receiving a full paint job in 2011.

Handling aboard Scorpione dei Mari is made easy, even with a small crew, due to her configuration with a Hall Spars carbon mast, Park Avenue carbon boom, lazy jack slab reefing, PBO rigging for the inner forestay and backstay and Harken carbon racing winches including a captive winch for the mainsheet.

She can be sailed from the double steering position behind the cockpit from where there is easy access to the stern swim platform. All cruising functions are also comfortably controlled from the navigation area in the inside cockpit, giving 360° degree visibility across the yacht.

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.
