An Etchells is incredible fast for a 22/26' waterline as the ballast ratio is so high. I recently saw that Etchells were given a rating of 136 PHRF in Charlottetown. WOW! in the mid-90's my Lake Ontario PHRF cert ended up at 105! And I sailed and Easter Seals Regatta on a 90 or 93 rating post-corrected by the RC.

2,851. 8. Detroit. Mar 23, 2008. #16. As FINS said, they're 117 in PHRF. We've done a couple races against them in our J/34, and while they do get hurt on reaches, with any sort of beat they're unstoppable. Nothing goes to weather like an Etchells (that I've seen, at least).

A friend of mine just got a killer deal on an etchells on ebay. Now he is going to be keeping it on a mooring, and he would like to put a motor on it. He is just looking to use it as a day sailer with the only time it might see a race is a PHRF beercan race that I would make him do on it at least once.

With a ballast/displacement ratio of 63 percent, Etchells are very stiff, Wurmfeld says. The e33s ballast/displacement number is 43 percent, so it, too, stands up well in a breeze. The boats narrow beam (8 feet, 6 inches) minimizes the effect of weight on the rail; the "no hiking" part of its personality is for real.
