Silver Lass (ex Silver Lal) was built by the renown J. A Silver boatyard in Rosneath, Scotland and is part of the Ormidale class of vessels designed by John Bain. She was originally built in 1961 for Mr James Ball Ritchie from the Isle of Man, who went on to fund the RNLI Oakley Class lifeboat based in Ramsey Harbour, although he sadly passed away before it was launched in 1970. The charitable trust set up by his late wife still goes towards funding the lifeboats for the Isle of Man to this day. It was then purchased by Mr Samuel Acton, from Conwy, Wales in 1965 before being purchased by Mr Richard Viney of London in 1969.

It stayed in the ownership of Mr Viney for 40 years, in which time he travelled with the vessel extensively throughout the Mediterranean, West and East and then into the Black sea and up the River Danube. In the later years of his ownership she returned to her permanent mooring on Cadogan Pier, Chelsea in London.

Throughout the entirety of Mr Viney’s ownership, the vessel was serviced and maintained by Ray Harrison who at the time was the overseas marine representative (all non capitals) for L Gardner & Sons, the father of Michael Harrison who owns Gardner Marine today. The vessel was put up for sale in 2008 and the new owner stripped out her tired interior and sent the engines to Gardner Marine for full overhaul. Two years into the restoration, progress came to a halt. Gardner Marine took ownership and embarked on the mammoth task of rebuilding what essentially amounted to an empty hull and a lock-up full of pieces – but a significant chapter of both Gardner Marine and Harrison history.

On completion, she was taken back to the Mediterranean in the Summer of 2023 where she had spent so much time all those years ago. After a season of travelling between the Balearics, Sardinia and mainland Italy, the trip culminated with her being part of the Monaco Classic Yacht week where (she can just about be spotted) in the background behind the beautiful Rivas.

The Restoration

The vessel was restored in house by Gardner Marine Ltd over a period of 4 years to bring this vessel back to perfect condition. In the heart of the vessel are two fully restored and completely original Gardner 6LW engines, close coupled to new ZF hydraulic gearboxes. A host of modern upgrades have been installed in the background of the vessel including full air conditioning and heating systems, large battery capacity for long periods of silent use, hydraulic stabilisation, and all new navigational and steering systems. M/Y FERRARA is a piece of maritime history, with over 100 years of experience in the North Sea, Baltic, Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean!  Are you looking for a unique opportunity to sail the seas and to discover new horizons? Then this proven circumnavigator with many miles under her keel could be for you.  This 20m Classic Gentleman Motor Yacht with her twin screw Gardner Diesel engines, keel cooled and dry exhaust is can take you anywhere with a small crew.     

Is capable of cruising the oceans of the world in complete confidence, having crossed the atlantic several times safety.     

M/Y FERRARA was built by the famed Herd & McKenzie shipbuilders and repairers in Buckie, Scotland. Robustly constructed to the highest standard requirements by then Sir David Crewdson, further bought by celebrity Pete Townshend "The Who" (English rock band formed in London in 1964) 

Ferraras's construction and interior designed by John McKenzie. In 2015 new owner decided to bing her back to a came up with a beautiful solution. The result is stunning.  

Its major refit was undertaken in 2015 at Vilanova Grand Marina, today´s Pendennis Shipyard. More work was done in 2016 and 2022. She is in excellent condition. Only 5 of the Herds were built under ocean crossing standards between August 1959 and October 1965 and they have gained status amongst connoisseurs.  

M/Y FERRARA is fully air-conditioned and all staterooms feature en-suite facilities with showers.  The saloon is fitted with flat screen Plasma TV and B&O sound system remote speakers through the yacht.  

She is well equipped with watersports for charter guests including a 3.5m Boston Whaler tender, 2,8m rib and a few toys.

Wooden Ships Comments on this McLean Gentlemans Motor Yacht

A classic gentleman’s motor yacht built in 1935 by Hugh McLean & Sons at Govan in Glasgow. At that time she was the subject of much interest in the Yachting press and was featured at length in an article in the magazine The Motor Boat.

Major refit undertaken by current owners between 2017 and 2018 which has involved a new deck, alterations to the wheelhouse and internal joinery as well as being completely re-wired.  The vast majority of the planned work has been completed with some interior fit out jobs left to be completed.

She has 3 separate sleeping cabins with a total of 6 berths and potential to add another cabin if required.  She is a very elegant and attractive motor yacht with great pedigree and is generally thought to be in excellent structural condition.

Surveyed in October 2020, details of this inspection are available on request.

Wrought iron strap floors across the centreline.

New decks laid in teak glued to a marine plywood sub deck.  Varnished teak cover board and toe rail.

Galvanised stanchions and guard rails in the original style with varnished teak capping rails.

Varnished teak wheelhouse, widened in the recent refit with a sheathed plywood deck.

Large aft deck with a step up to a raised mid section.

Twin Beta Marine 90hp diesels installed new in 2005.

Stainless shafts to handed 4 blade bronze propellers

Inside and outside helm positions.

Accommodation

6 berths in 3 separate cabins.

Steps down into the wheelhouse with a settee either side and helm position forward to port.

Steps down forward into the lower saloon with a large L-shape settee to port and side board with storage to starboard.  Nicely finished varnished joinery throughout.

Forward into the forecabin with twin V-berths and a hand basin.

Going aft from the wheelhouse, steps down into the galley to starboard and twin cabin to port.

Galley was entirely new in the refit with mahogany lockers and a hardwood work surface.  Twin stainless sinks.  Electric cooker to be fitted.  Under counter 12 volt fridge.

Shower compartment to starboard, currently emptied and requiring fit out to new owners spec.

Heads in a separate compartment with a new Jabsco 12 volt electric sea toilet fitted with a holding tank.

The owner has a dream build team, one that has built several yachts. Each is a remarkable achievement and IJE, it's safe to say, tops them all. She is a tour de force and the longest Benetti ever built.

The briefest glance will tell you that the beautifully balanced exterior lines bear the distinctive signature of sought-after star studio RWD. The owner's team worked very closely with them to perfect the look of decks seeming to float one above the other.

Inside she has wonderfully informal beach-house style, airy, welcoming and restful, which is perfect for a family yacht. Another stamp of excellence is expert naval architecture by PierLuigi Ausonio.

Most appealing features?

In the main saloon the full-height glass walls can slide back to open the space up. The difference that makes is hard to explain but it completely changes the environment.

Sound becomes softer and you can hear the sea, the air and light change to make it a shaded outside space. The entire experience is so much more restful. It's a break-through piece of design.

The main deck aft has a good-sized pool, open-air dining, a bar, several different lounge areas including a TV lounge - everything families need to spend the day together. 

There's a fully equipped lower deck gym with one of the largest sea terraces I've seen on a yacht of this size, and opposite is the tender and toy garage, which is packed with the latest kit.

She has two 12m (40ft) tenders on the foredeck to take extended families ashore together. That longer length means they're faster, more comfortable, carry more people and equipment and have better range.

There are eleven cabins for 22 guests, including a private owner's deck with walkaround sidedecks and a bedroom suite with direct access to the foredeck helipad.

An elevator connects lower to bridge decks and there is corridor access from the lower deck lobby to the beach club so that all generations of the family can enjoy step-free time together.

There's a dedicated cinema, a very private nightclub complete with fully equipped bar, lighting and sound systems and DJ station, and a bridge deck games room with access to the aft deck's firepit lounge.

The main deck has a beauty treatment room and hair salon and a massage room equipped to double as a hospital. She has everything any family could want or need for extended cruising.

Right from the start, she was intended to be a world-cruising family yacht, one that could take the owner and their family cruising in any part of the world, places where the weather is not always reliable. To keep everyone on board comfortable, underway or at anchor, she has two sets of Naiad stabilisers.

In more and more locations anchoring is not allowed to protect reefs and seabeds so she has been fitted with a Rolls-Royce dynamic positioning system to hold position without having to anchor. 

Operating in the Mediterranean, yachts are generally well catered for and there are plenty of diversions ashore. When you get off the beaten track, which IJE was designed and built to be able to do, the infrastructure can become indifferent, distances greater, comfort and entertainment on board more important.

31m Baglietto motor yacht Theion listed for sale

The 30.9-metre Baglietto motor yacht Theion has been listed for sale with Spiros Andrikopoulos at Attica Yachts .

Delivered by the Italian shipyard in 1997, the aluminium yacht is the only Baglietto 30M model. While naval architecture was developed by Alcide Sculati and Francesco Paszkowski Design , the exterior design is the work of Giuseppe Sole .

The interior, designed by Stefano Natucci , can accommodate up to 10 guests in five cabins, comprising a master suite, VIP cabin and two twins – one of which features a Pullman berth. There is further provision for a crew of five.

Guests can benefit from the ample relaxation spaces on board, including the sunpads and al fresco seating on the flybridge. Meanwhile, the saloon is a cosy space to unwind, typified by neutral furnishings and dark woods.

With power coming from a pair of MTU diesel engines, the 179GT yacht for sale boasts a top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 29 knots. She also has a maximum cruising range of 900 nautical miles at 15 knots.

Lying in Athens, Greece, Theion is asking €2,050,000 with VAT paid.
