Monarch 14 is a 13 ′ 8 ″ / 4.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Ron Holder and built by Monarch Boats (USA) starting in 1986.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Monark 14' sailboat

I bought a used 14' sailboat. It says Monark, with a "k". I can find very little information online about this boat. I have attached a few photos. I am specifically looking for advice on how to repair the mast step (I believe that is the proper term). The "seat" for the mast needs to be reseated. Thank you.

Hey there, I have a MonArk 14 too - I can't find any information on it online and i need to buy new sails, the old ones weren't included when i bought the boat. do you have measurements on the sails or any other information on this boat? I am currently in the process of cleaning it and restoring it - but would love to take it out soon!
It's been a while since your post, but we have a set of used sails at Midwest Sailing in Michigan [email protected]
Going to have to use basic boat repair techniques for the mast step. First: How easily are the wood inserts in the seats to remove? Glued in or screwed down? (pictures too small to see) If they come off easily by removing screws, start pulling the ones near the mast and see if there are access holes through the fiberglass under them. If the wood is bonded to the fiberglass LEAVE IT ALONE. If no access to see inside the hull, you MIGHT end up having to make access to view inside and evaluate what needs to be done. This is pretty common and generally people cut round access ports and then fit them with cover plates (6 inch dia access port kit is about $8) Its not a big deal to cut these holes... Hopefully its simpler, but the pics so far are inadequate to say for sure. First step is actually getting a good look and figuring out how much repair is needed. ************************ For missing sails... you can get a view of the rigging (usually) on sailboatdata.com Unfortunately... no rigged side view this time. MONARCH 14 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com See Understanding Sail Dimensions and Sail Area Calculation for what you'll need to measure to find the correct sail size. If one of you has good sails (or at least good enough) and can directly measure them, that is ideal.
Thank you for your reply! My one concern was that the information provided on sailboatdata.com was that it was spelled Monarch not MonArk - but now that i look into it more, it is probably referencing the same boat. It is very similar to the Holder 14. I've attached a picture of it since I've begun cleaning / polishing it. It looks as though it has been neglected for some time. I've also attached a picture of an advertisement I found for it online. I wish there was more information on this boat! I also wish that one of these sail manufacturers had this boat in their system so that ordering a new jib and main would be a breeze :2 boat:
I have this boat as well which I have never been able to sail because the rope that lets down the starboard dagger-board broke and I HAVE NO CLUE how to run a new rope through. I cannot figure out how to get into the dagger-board compartment. Ideas????
I would bet that if it has twin swing-retractable daggerboards (swing keel) that the wood for the seats does come off for access to the mechanism. Also in the above pictures, it looks like the wood seats have finger holes for getting hold of them for removal. It can't be a lot like the Hobie Holder/Hobie 1/Vagabond 14 if its twin swing keels. One version of these has a centered single swing keel, the rest use a simple daggerboard in a slot that drops in from above. I'd expect the swing keels to be metal while daggerboards are typically Mahogany or fiberglass. Chrysler made a 16 ft boat with lever operated twin swing keels. *********************** Anyway, look for how to pull the seats so you can take pictures of what is in there and I expect we'll be able to figure out the swing keel system. If you flip the hull you'll see how the hinge is connected to the hull if you don't see it by getting under the seats.
Thank you for a quick reply! The storage compartments under the wooden seats are solid, no access to anything through them without 'fiberglass surgery'. In the attached pictures you can see the small holes where the ropes come out which pull up and let down the swing keels with fast entry cam cleats to hold the ropes. Right now one of my keels is hanging out because with the snapped rope I am unable to pull it back into its compartment. I will try and get some better pictures of my own boat and perhaps some from below the boat if I can get it hoisted up. I imagine that the board may need to be let down completely and rope restrung BUT unsure how to remove the pivot pin way up in the keel compartment to do so. Is it possible that some boats you simply must cut into? Or maybe I am just missing something :/ Thanks!
I have the same boat. The center boards are really hard to remove. They are held on by spring loaded pipes ... like a toilet paper roll holder. You use a long screwdriver in the side slot to pry one end of the pipe in, then slip a flat piece of metal to keep it pressed in. Then you very, carefully use the screwdriver to push in the other side and that will release the very heavy center board. Be careful because if the ropes are not attached, the centerboard can hit you on the head. The centerboard is the same size as the rudder. Once you get the boards out the ropes are easy to replace. In my case, the wood around the the rope holes was a bit rotted, so I repaired the damage with some epoxy. I have a lot of documentation on this boat. They are very well made and lots of fun to sail. Need photos of the boards But usually when a line is blind or hidden where it goes in and comes out, the best thing to do is connect the new line to it with a smooth connection by either sewing or very well taped. You then use the old line and pull the new line through. It's called using a messenger line, it's also used to pull new halyards up a mast on larger boats.
Hi all, I love that this thread is getting some attention. The ropes that hold up the swing keels on my boat are old and brittle and i could see them breaking some time soon. There appears to be no way to replace this rope, unless one was to flip the boat on it's side and find a way that way. Given that this thing weighs a ton, this won't be an easy task. The messenger line idea may work, but I'm not too sure. Currently, I am waxing, cleaning and using epoxy to patch a few areas on my MonArk before i launch it in the water, so that i can take the trailer home and re-paint it. Only after that is done will it be ready to throw a trolling motor 55 lb thrust and marine battery in for some fun. The sails will be ordered this winter.

Hey Denise. I don't think i said i can't or won't replace those lines, i said that it would be a difficult task! Obviously these are essential to the boat, and them working properly is pretty close to garnering the term, 'paramount' - that being said, there is no easy way to replace these. my idea is next time the boat is in the water, or being raised up, or on shore where it can be tipped - this is when the surgery will take place. unless you have any better ideas?
Almost certainly the boat will have to be on land. I'd be surprised if the hull is a lot heavier than the Vagabond 14/Hobie One/Hobie Holder series boats. (all of these just have minor cosmetic differences from each other except the one that has swing keel instead of daggerboard) I can drag my Vagabond off the trailer and flip (onto the lawn with some cheap life jackets and pool noodles for padding) it solo, with a bad back and a prosthetic leg. Its about a 300 lb hull (probably a bit less). Just takes some thought about how to go about it, a good anchor point about 10 to 12 ft above where the boat will be flipped, some rope and 3 pulleys. If you can get it secured and supported on its side you can hopefully access everything at once for changing your swing keel lines. Even with broken/missing line you should be able to thread one through using an electrician's "fish tape" or a long, thin stiff wire. The big problem being accessing the attachment point on the swinging keel.
You will have to lift the boat off the trailer with a jack, prop it up on 8' long 4x4s set on cinder blocks, pull the trailer out, let the boards go down all the way, remove old rope but keep it in place, attach new rope to the old rope (end to end) so you can pull it through (put a few sail thread stitches on the rope end joint so it holds well). Once new rope is in place, attach rope ends to the board with a shackle. Standing the boat on a side next to a tree (for support) works if you have one or two strong helpers.

My Boat
Does anyone know the weight of the M-1? I need a new trailer and want to make sure it's within the weight limits of the trailer.
this thing weighs so much - it is unbelievable. i need to paint my trailer and i think the only way to do it is to drop this thing somewhere (water / boat yard) and pay the fee and take a few days to fix the trailer. ive tried pushing it off the trailer with a few guys and its next to impossible.
I just bought a used Monark 14 (M-1) and also need to replace the ropes in the two centerboards. Will try the latest comment about pushing in the spring loaded pivots. Did any of you guys posting here have success replacing the centerboard ropes?
unfortunately, i still haven't tried this. the poor monark has been resting in the garage for far too long. Let me know if you try this and how it goes though - would be interested to hear. the notion of just tipping this boat on its side and fixing it is just laughable. my monark seems to have a cement balast system.

Review of Monarch 14
Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.
The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.
CentreBoard
The Monarch 14 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.
The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.15 - 0.25 meter (0.49 - 0.79 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Monarch 14 is about 46 kg/cm, alternatively 258 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 46 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 258 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Are Monark Boats any good?

I'm looking to buy a 2004 19 foot Monark King model. This boat has all the features I'm looking for but I'm not up to speed as to their quality. I'm also looking at putting a 150 Merc Optimax on it.<br />Any comments would sure be appreciated!<br />Thanks<br />GoVikes

Re: Are Monark Boats any good? I live very near a monark/starcraft dealer and looked at the king with the mercruiser 220 MPI i/o. They are very nice to look at and seem to be well built. The reason I didn't buy one was the dealer would not get me a trailer with a folding/removable tongue. The guy down the street bounced his older monark off a submerged log and lossened some of his rivets and the manufacturer is repairing it free of charge.

Re: Are Monark Boats any good? I bought a new Monark pontoon boat in Nov of 1996 and it's held up well. I picked it over other brands because it had more overall quality than others but also cost more to buy. There are three items I don't like about it. 1. They used plain steel screws (8 total)on the folding legs of the sofa that converts to a double bed...should have used stainless. 2. They used a fuse panel instead of breakers. 3. The wiring harness was not secured well and flopped around. A few tiewraps cured the problem but it left the factory loose.

Re: Are Monark Boats any good? I used to have an older 21 foot Monark with an I/O diesel Volvo. I was never happy with the motor, quirkiest engine I've ever had, but the boat was solid as a rock.

Re: Are Monark Boats any good? I own a 1980 14ft. monark jon boat. I bought it used and have not had any problems. it doesnt leak at the rivets which i thought was very impressive considering the boats age. if you look at the bottom of the boat it becomes very apparent that the previous owners were not scared to run things over or hit submerged debris. the boat has many "character marks" and still no leaks. my opinion.... monark builds very good boats.

Monark 14' Jon Boat
New to the site and working on buying a used boat. Is there anyway to tell what the bottom width is on a Monark 14' jon boat with a beam of 50 1/2". Those where the only specs I was given. Waiting on seller to respond with bottom width but thought I'd ask the pros. Thanks and Semper Fi  I'm guessing 36 or 40. May be able to make it work Width is just as important as size. There is a world of difference between a 1436 and a 1448 when it comes to stability and comfort. ^^ sounds like you've heard that line before. But on a serious note, I bought a boat with a 36" bottom this year and I wish I would have gotten something a bit wider it's extremely tippy. However it also depends on some variables. Will you be hunting by yourself in backwaters? Then the 36" would be nice however if your gonna have buddies with you or are hunting bigger water them I would look at something wider. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Sorry for the late response. I ended up finding a 1546 with a trailer and a johnson sea horse 10 motor. Took the boat out no leaks amd in pretty good shape for a 1983 model jon boat. At least I believe it is lol. Since buying have added a conduit base duck blind and lights. Will post pictures soon. For waterfowling, a 1432 jon boat should absolutely come with international orange PFD's...makes it way easier to locate the bodies. I got a couple more runners done today and decided it needs a casting deck at bench level after all. It'll have plenty of room underneath for a battery and whatnots and if I find it sits too high it'll be easy to take off.

 ... plywood covered with "silver sand" vinyl coming from Cabelas. Click to expand... Yep, I bought a piece of carpet and changed my mind before I even unrolled it. When I cut the plywood and cover it, I think I'm going to lay it on the brackets and trace the bracket from underneath and then take the brackets off and put screws in from the bottom for a tidy look.
The 'silver sand' vinyl came today and it's identical to the shelf in the first pic. Also found some 3/8" monel staples at an Ace hardware so today I got busy coating the wood with Titebond Ultimate. The 25hp Evinrude I found needed more work than I'm capable of doing so I sold it on craiglist and put a deposit on a 1987 merc xd 25hp at a boat repair shop. This is my kind of fun.
5XXX+ series is marine use aluminum. 6+++ series $$ and less malleable. 1/4" is very heavy for a 14 footer. Hull is only 0.10 " I really like your project. Great job.

Are those aluminum planks able to rub the sides of the boat? If so they will cause wear in the side of the boat over time, not to mention rattle like crazy if you hook an outboard up to it. They'll be screwed to each other and to the stringers and short enough that only the bottom of the planks contacts the ledge. Measured the bench tin at about .04" which surprised me. I thought it would be at least .06".
Located a small piece of 5052 .040" and it doesn't bend well without cracking so 3003 looks like the way to go or piece the storage compartments together with angle and rivets.

Enter your email address to join: House Republicans reject their own funding bill with a shutdown around the cornerWASHINGTON — House Republicans on Wednesday defeated their own plan to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month, with the party divided over the length of a short-term funding bill and what, if anything, should be attached to it. It was an embarrassing blow to Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who had yanked the same funding package off the floor last week amid growing GOP defections, only to watch it collapse on Wednesday in a vote that seemed doomed from the start. The vote was 202-220 with two members voting present. In all, fourteen Republicans voted against the package, and three Democrats — Reps. Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington and Don Davis of North Carolina — voted for it. Thirteen days before money runs out for the federal government, there is still no bipartisan plan to stave off a shutdown. While the GOP-led House could try again, the focus now likely shifts to the Senate, where leaders in both parties agree a shutdown would be disastrous weeks before the election. Johnson’s plan called for extending funding at current spending levels for six months, through March 2025, and linking it with the SAVE Act , Donald Trump-backed legislation requiring that people show proof of citizenship to register to vote. A GOP-only funding bill was always going to be a heavy lift for Johnson given Republicans’ razor-thin majority and the fact that a number of GOP lawmakers — a mix of fiscal conservatives and defense hawks — had vowed for days to tank it. Democrats want a “clean” three-month funding patch with nothing attached, and virtually all voted no on the Johnson plan. Many oppose the SAVE Act, noting that it is already illegal , and rare , for noncitizens to vote . GOP opponents were comprised of some unusual bedfellows. Some conservatives said they never vote for stopgap funding bills, known as continuing resolutions, or CRs, while Armed Services Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Ala., has warned that half a year is too long for military spending to remain stagnant. That would be "devastating" to the Pentagon, the chairman told NBC News before the vote. Other GOP defections included Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado; Matt Gaetz and Cory Mills, both of Florida; Nancy Mace of South Carolina; and Matt Rosendale of Montana. But the overwhelming majority of rank-and-file Republicans backed Johnson’s move, saying holding the vote would put lawmakers on record. “I think it’s good to put it on the floor, let people know who the people are that support it and don’t,” Rep. Warren Davidson, of Ohio, said earlier Wednesday. “I think that’s more important to call the vote, let the record show who stands where. Everyone.” Davidson, who was ousted in July from the far-right House Freedom Caucus, lamented that Republicans have failed to unify behind a plan weeks before the election. “It’s a combination of bedwetters who won’t fight for anything,” he said, “and purists who won’t fight for anything unless it’s perfect.” Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, has loomed large in the funding fight. Hours before the vote, Trump reiterated his message that Republicans should shut down the government unless the SAVE Act becomes law. "If Republicans don’t get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form," Trump wrote on Truth Social , making the baseless claim that tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants will vote in the upcoming election. "Only American Citizens should be voting in our Most Important Election in History, or any Election! A Vote must happen BEFORE the Election, not AFTER the Election when it is too late," Trump added. "BE SMART, REPUBLICANS, YOU’VE BEEN PUSHED AROUND LONG ENOUGH BY THE DEMOCRATS. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN." After the vote, Johnson met with reporters and defended his strategy but declined to share what his next play call would be. "The play that we ran tonight was the right play. It's the right play for the American people. It's the one they demand and deserve," Johnson said just off the House floor, using his favorite football metaphors. "We have two very important objectives right now. Congress has an obligation to fund the government. Congress has an obligation to ensure that our elections are secure, fair and free. This vote tonight could have accomplished both. I'm very disappointed that it didn't pass." The government is slated to shut down at 12:01 a.m. Oct. 1 unless Republicans and Democrats can reach a deal on short-term funding. That won’t include the speaker’s plan, which is dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate and faces a veto threat from President Joe Biden. Instead, the likely next step will be Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., bringing to the floor a clean CR, funding the government past the election into December. That would buy time for bipartisan negotiators to strike a longer-term funding deal during the lame-duck session for fiscal year 2025 — if a short-term bill can pass the House. "Plan B's always been a clean CR," Rep. John Duarte, R-Calif., said of the need to eventually pass a short-term patch. Schumer called on Johnson to negotiate with Senate Democrats in a statement after the vote. “For weeks, Speaker Johnson pursued a partisan ploy knowing full well it had no chance of passing or averting a shutdown. We now have only a few days left for House Republicans to come to their senses, come to the table, and come together with Democrats to craft a bipartisan agreement," he said. With the Nov. 5 general election just 48 days away, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is warning that a shutdown would be politically devastating for the GOP. "One thing you cannot have at the government shutdown would be politically beyond stupid for us to do that right before the election," McConnell said Tuesday, "because certainly we'd get the blame." House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., said after Wednesday's meeting that he had complete faith in Johnson figuring out how to avert a shutdown, noting the speaker reached a funding deal earlier this year with Schumer for the current fiscal year. "At the end of the day, if he ever wanted to shut down the government, he had a lot of opportunities to do that," Cole said. "Since he's been speaker, he's never let it happen. I don't think he ever will." Former House Appropriations Chair Rosa DeLauro, now the top Democrat on the panel, said she hopes bipartisan negotiators can now sit down and hammer out a clean funding bill to keep the lights on. "I think we're going to get to where we need to go because we have to," DeLauro, D-Conn., said. "We need people who have an understanding of what a shutdown means. Monark 14' sailboat. I bought a used 14' sailboat. It says Monark, with a "k". I can find very little information online about this boat. I have attached a few photos. I am specifically looking for advice on how to repair the mast step (I believe that is the proper term). The "seat" for the mast needs to be reseated.

The Monarch 14 is equipped with a centerboard keel. A centerboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters. The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.15 - 0.25 meter (0.49 - 0.79 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.

I bought it used and have not had any problems. it doesnt leak at the rivets which i thought was very impressive considering the boats age. if you look at the bottom of the boat it becomes very apparent that the previous owners were not scared to run things over or hit submerged debris. the boat has many "character marks" and ...
Aug 18, 2014. #2. Here is a link to an archive of Years of Model Numbers for Monark boats. Click on each year - a couple times each as the more you click the bigger the font gets and it starts out very small. That model number shows up from 1959 to 1962. There are no records for 63 & 64. And then continues in 65 on.

Apr 30, 2010. #9. Make the bulkhead for the front deck tie into the ribs and kill two birds with one stone. Even a piece of 3/4" plywood cut to fit tight and screwed into the sides of the ribs with **stainless steel** screws will make a world of difference. Also MonArk used 2" ribs where everyone else uses 1 1/2".

Is there anyway to tell what the bottom width is on a Monark 14' jon boat with a beam of 50 1/2". Those where the only specs I was given. Waiting on seller to respond with bottom width but thought I'd ask the pros.
