1983 34.4' Tanzer 10.5

  • Description

Seller's Description

We have owned this Tanzer since 2006. It has sailed in a lake and in the ocean, from Florida to Grenada and back to Puerto Rico. Great all around boat. The Tanzer was built in Dorion, Quebec. The boat is built of fiberglass with some wood inside. It has a masthead sloop rig, a transom and skeg-hung rudder, wheel steering, and a retractable lead keel. The boat displacement is 13,000 lbs, with the keel being 5,700 lbs.

The Tanzer 10.5 was designed with a number of very interesting and innovative features. It has a retractable ballasted lead keel. Unlike many boats with a swing keel arrangement, the Tanzer 10.5s keel fills-in the entire keel house opening when it is in its lowered position. The keel is raised hydraulically, with a push of a button, and the housing is located in the pilot house. This means its performance should come very close to that of a fixed keel. Although the Tanzer 10.5 looks very much like a sleek sailboat, it actually has a pilot house with an interior steering station.

PRICED FOR QUICK SALE This excellent made Canadian 1983 sailboat 344, plus has a swim platform which makes this a 36 overall length boat. priced for 38,000.00. Plane to Sea is her name and she is located in Patillas, Puerto Rico, on the South side of PR.

The pilot house is accessed from the cockpit down a short ladder. The pilot house has wrap-around windows and a helm position to starboard with a chart table Just aft of pilot house is the head with a shower. Next to that is the galley, with a 3 burner propane stove and oven. The main cabin is two steps down from the pilot house. And features a dinette with comfortable seating for 6 people. The table can be converted to a double berth. In the bow is two twin bunks with large storage under the bed. It has 6 deck hatches and 2 opening ports for ventilation. This sailboat is also unique as it has a center cockpit with an aft cabin, which is connected to the galley with a small passage hallway. This hallway has 3 maple cabinets for storage.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The TANZER 10.5 featured a pilothouse with inside steering and was offered in fixed, and lifting keel versions. Draft for fixed keel version: 5.92’ Based on the earlier TANZER 10. Dimensions from builders brochure.

Anyone familiar with the boat? It has a hydraulic swing keel - a rudder you can raise and an inside steering station - my concern is the swing keel - I like the ability to have shallow draft - but it's a complication - any thoughts? I am taking a look at one next week

tanzer 10.5 sailboat data

I have spent some time on a Tanzer 10.5. Might even have pics somewhere. Cool design. Full size cruiser but with swing keel and swing up Rudder. Kind of a pseudo pilot house so you can watch where you are going from inside. Neat boats.

I owned one for a couple years, the swing keel was an option, mine was a fixed keel. It was a good, comfortable boat, the pilot house windows leaked from time to time in the rainy PNW. I found I didn't use the inside helm much, but I sail far more than I motor. The fixed keel drew 6 feet. I sold it as I was worried about the heat in the tropics since that was where I was heading. Great for Vancouver Island and up the inside passage. goat

TANZER 10.5 SAILBOAT FOR SALE BY OWNER

$49,700 obo

Located in Bayfield, WI

ABOUT THE SAILBOAT

'Manannan' has been our faithful companion for the past 38 years. There were only 37 Tanzer 10.5's built. Built in 1983, this sailboat has had many voyages and remains in great condition. A sister ship, also built in 1983, was sailed to Australia and back. Then, after 20 years of hard use, a survey showed a boat in excellent structural condition.

Aside from its bluewater capability it has some very nice features. All the tanks are under the floor in the center of the boat and easily accessible. The retractable keel, inside steering, self-tending jib, queen size aft berth, ability to lower the mast, and feeling of light and spaciousness inside are all pluses when on a long cruise. She sails stiffly, heeling less than you'd think, and handles weather and strong winds well. There is great storage all over the boat. It feels much larger than 34.5 feet and definitely has livability.

We are asking $49,700 (or best offer)for both the Tanzer and it's companion sailing dinghy.

Please use the contact form for any questions or offers.

Boat: Gulfstar 41' ketch
for about 20 years ago and had one surveyed. It was a long time ago but here is what I remember and these are entirely my opinions.

They incorporated many very interesting features. It's lifting is the main attraction and I believe there was a hydraulic and a chain version. The chains were known to break and the hydraulic was preferred. They had an with a manual back up.

The keel trunk was up against the dinette and was not too intrusive but did block entrance to seating on one end of the U so seating entrance exit was one end only. Rest of the layout seemed very workable.

The was cored down to the waterline on the one I looked at and the gel coat had major extensive crazing. I would not expect to see this on all of them but it might say something about QC.

The lifting construction was very lightweight and while acceptable for coastal was IMHO not sufficient for even occasional hops. It was a deal killer for us.

Indeed we felt that the general quality of build was insufficient and too lightweight for our intended use.

It might make a nice but I would worry about it's longevity in the hot, bright, humid . It sure is a tempting design and if one of the small Southerlys had been available in this country we would have snapped it up but alas.....

Some of the ones on Yachtworld look in nice condition and are worth an if you think they might be suited to your needs.
