Sirmione is located in Italy, on the beautiful Lake Garda. You might be wondering: how is this place a hidden gem? Well, Sirmione is a very popular place to visit, especially during the summer.

However, there are still some hidden gems to be found here. When you know where to eat and where to stay, you’ll suddenly have a very different experience of this famous Lake Garda town.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about Sirmione, including how to get here, where to stay, where to eat and and what to do.

Is Sirmione worth visiting?

Sirmione is definitely worth visiting. There are several great things to do here, such as going to a thermal spa, exploring a castle, visiting the beach and admiring its lake views.

If you know what to do, where to eat and especially where to stay, you will have an incredible experience in Sirmione.

How to get here ?

Verona Airport (Valerio Catullo) is the closest airport to Sirmione, located around 30 kilometers away. You can book a flight to Verona Airport, which serves both domestic and international flights.

Once you arrive at Verona Airport, take a taxi or a shuttle to Verona’s main train station, Verona Porta Nuova. From here you can take bus to Sirmione. The journey usually takes around an hour to an hour and a half.

Bring cash with you just in case, as they don’t always accept payment by card.

From Verona Airport you can also choose to get to Sirmione by taxi. This takes approximately 30 minutes. This is what we personally did and it cost us 72 euros in total for one-way. It was a very convenient way of transportation and the taxi could bring us near to the gate.

If you prefer flexibility, you can rent a car at the airport. Sirmione is well-connected by road, and it’s a relatively short drive from Verona (around 30 minutes). You can take the A4 motorway and follow the signs for Sirmione. Do keep in mind that Sirmione is a limited traffic zone.

During the warmer months, you can also reach Sirmione by boat. Regular ferry services operate on Lake Garda, connecting various towns around the lake. This is a scenic way to arrive in Sirmione.

Important tip: if you want to get back to Verona from Sirmione by public transport, in theory there is a direct bus. However, when we took the bus the direct bus never arrived. Instead, you had to hop on a different bus and get off at stop number 9 to change buses.

While this was advertised, you could not pay by card in the bus. So it’s highly advisable to bring some cash with you. A bus ticket cost us 4.90€ per person to get from Sirmione to Verona. We only had 8.90€ in cash, but the bus driver was nice enough to let us on.

How to get around Sirmione?

Sirmione is a very walkable place. The town is relatively small, and many of its attractions are within walking distance. You can also rent a bike to explore its surroundings.

Sirmione is a limited traffic zone, so getting around by car here is not advisable. If you have difficulties with walking, there are golf cars that go around the town.

When to visit Sirmione?

It’s best to visit Sirmione between May and October, when the weather is at its best. During the summer months, it can get pretty crowded in Sirmione, so personally I would say that May, June, September and October are the best months to visit.

How many days are enough?

It’s recommendable to stay for at least three days in Sirmione. You can easily stay here for a week or longer if you’re using Sirmione as your base to explore more of the area or if you just want to relax for a week.

Where to stay in Sirmione, italy?

There are some lovely options for your stay in Sirmione. However, I highly recommend the following accommodations:

Villa Paradiso

Our stay at Villa Paradiso is what made our visit to Sirmione unique. Some may say it’s a little outdated, but it’s a classical charm that makes this place so authentic and special.

The garden is very large, filled with flowers, greenery and several spots to relax. There is a whirlpool which you can use between 4 and 8 pm. You can reserve it by scanning a QR code.

Breakfast is included in the price and is served on the beautiful terrace outside. There’s a self service kitchen as well, where you can grab drinks and write down what you got and pay for it at the end of your stay.

The owner is very kind. Besides, it’s away from tourist madness. It feels like a world away from crowds and truly is a paradise.

It’s definitely one of the loveliest places I’ve ever been to. The historic city centre of Sirmione is around 8 minutes away by foot. If you’re interested in a more elaborate review of our stay here, you will find it over here .

The villa is located a little uphill so keep this in mind. The rooms are comfortable and have a private bathroom and nice views overlooking the lake. Click here to view its rates and availability.

Villa Cortine Palace Hotel

If you’re looking for a very luxurious or once-in-a-lifetime kind of stay, then you should stay at Villa Cortine Palace Hotel . This is easily one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever seen. The grounds the hotel sits on and the views overlooking Lago di Garda are truly breathtaking.

The hotel rooms are spacious and very comfortable and the breakfast & restaurants are wonderful as well. The only downside of this hotel would be its price, however if you have the money to spend, then it’s definitely worth booking. Click here to view its rates and availability.

Hotel Meridiana

A less expensive option than the previous mentioned hotel is Hotel Meridiana . This hotel also has a nice restaurant named Bon Ton Bistrot.

Elia and Margarita are the very friendly and helpful owners. They are passionate about providing local products on their menu.

The hotel’s location is a lot more quiet than the centre of Sirmione, yet within a few minutes walk you’ll find lots of shops and restaurants.

The best things to do in Sirmione

There are several great things to do in Sirmione. These include the following:

Jamaica Beach

One of the best things to do here is to visit Jamaica Beach. Definitely bring water shoes with you though! The rocks in the water are very slippy, so you’ll need these If you want to go swimming.

The beach is busy and it’s not hard to see why. It’s without a doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in Sirmione.

There’s a beach bar here called Jamaica Beach. Drinks are served in plastic cups and you have to order your drinks at the bar. Alternatively, there’s a more quiet place a few minutes away from here called Bar Grotte di Catullo.

Scaligero Castle

The Scaligero Castle is the standout attraction in Sirmione, and a must-visit. This medieval fortress, surrounded by the stunning waters of Lake Garda, represents the town’s rich history. It’s one of the best preserved Italian castles.

Inside, you can explore its rooms and climb to the top for panoramic views of Sirmione and the lake. It’s a remarkable piece of architecture worth visiting. Try to visit in the morning to escape most of the crowds.

Giardino Grazia Deledda

One of the most beautiful parts of Sirmone: Giardino Grazia Deledda. This beautiful garden is not far away from the castle, yet sees a lot less crowds. It’s without a doubt a hidden gem and feels like an oasis of peace. Although you can’t access the garden, you can admire it.

San Pietro Church

St. Pietro Chuch, located 10 minutes away from Sirmione’s historic centre, is a beautiful religious site. It’s a simple yet elegant small Catholic church. It doesn’t get as much visitors as the historic centre or Scaligero Castle, yet it’s definitely worth visiting. Besides, it’s free to visit.

Lido delle Bionde Beach

For a day of sun, sand, and relaxation, you can head over to Lido delle Bionde Beach. This beach on Lake Garda’s shores offers clear waters and a clean, sandy shoreline. Whether you’re sunbathing, swimming, or simply enjoying a walk along the lakeside promenade, this beach provides a nice escape in Sirmione.

Azienda Agricola Ca ‘Dei Frati

Wine lovers should not miss a visit to Azienda Agricola Ca ‘Dei Frati. This winery showcases the excellence of local winemaking. Take a guided tour to learn about the wine production process and sample their exquisite wines.

The vineyards surrounding the winery are not only beautiful but also produce some of the region’s finest wines.

Thermal Spa Centre

Sirmione is known for its thermal spas, offering a rejuvenating experience. After a day of exploring, relax at one of the town’s thermal spa centers. It’s a perfect way to recharge during your visit.

One of the best thermal spa centers in the area is Aquaria Thermal Spa . It’s located in the centre, has a large swimming pool, multiple saunas and a nice cafe called Aquaria Cafe.

Archaeological site of Grotte di Catullo

The Grotte di Catullo is a archaeological site, located near Jamaica Beach. If you’re interested in Sirmione’s ancient past, then you should definitely visit. Explore the ruins of a Roman villa and enjoy the scenic views of Lake Garda from this historical site.

Combining a visit here with a day at the beach makes for a well-rounded Sirmione experience.

Rocca di Manerba Viewpoint

If you’re up for a short excursion from Sirmione, head to the Rocca di Manerba viewpoint. This point has breathtaking views of Lake Garda and the surrounding landscape. It’s an ideal spot for nature lovers and photographers. The hike to the viewpoint takes around 20 minutes.

Buy souvenirs at Capricci di Gola

One of the best shops in Sirmione to bring back high-quality food and drinks is Capricci di Gola.

Here you can buy some souvenirs to bring back home with you, such as olive oil, truffle oil or delicious Italian sausages. The shop is located in the historical city centre.

Go on a day trip to Verona

Verona is only half an hour away by car, so you can easily go on a day trip if you take a taxi or if you have a car at your disposal.

There are many things to do in Verona, such as walking through its centre, admiring its theatre and just soaking up its vibrant atmosphere.

Tip: if you want to eat delicious pizza during your day trip to Verona, I can highly recommend eating at Cista.

Where to eat and drink in Sirmione?

There are so many good restaurants in Sirmione, that it can be really hard to choose where to go. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of some of the best restaurants in Sirmione:

Bar della Torre: for a hidden gem near the beach

For a café with a good atmosphere and lake views you should head to Bar Della Torre. The staff is friendly and they serve cappuccino with soy milk (one of the few places with plant-based milk). It’s definitely a hidden gem in Sirmione.

My partner has tried 10 different espresso doppio’s in Sirmione and according to him here you’ll find the best. Even though water was not included. You can pay directly at the bar when you’re finished.

Enoteca delle Antiche Mura: for snacks and aperitivo

For a nice snack and aperitivo you should head over to Enoteca delle Antiche Mura. It’s located in the historic centre, yet is not as busy as the lakeside restaurants. They serve delicious baguettes with toppings such as prosciutto and mozzarella.

Vista Lounge & Bar: for cocktails

Vista Lounge & Bar is a very good spot for evening drinks, especially If you like high-quality cocktails. If you sit outside you’ll have a nice view overlooking Lago di Garda. I highly recommend a visit to this lounge bar.

It’s a little more expensive than other places, but the high-quality drinks and lovely lake views make up for this.

Il Vicolo: for affordable burgers

Il Vicolo is a hidden gem in Sirmione. It doesn’t get as crowded as other spots, has a friendly owner and very tasty burgers. It feels a bit hidden away. Besides, it’s one of the most affordable meals you’ll find in Sirmione. They also have a nice cocktail with strawberries.

Place restaurant: for a simple breakfast

For a simple breakfast, head over to Place Restaurant. You’ll have beautiful lake views which don’t have to cost too much. You can get some yoghurt with strawberries here for 6 euros. They also serve delicious ice coffees (with ice cream inside).

Bon Ton Bistrot: for a cosy atmosphere

Bon Ton Bistrot is definitely one of the best restaurants here. It’s located in a more quiet area and is especially a good restaurant because of its great service! It also has a cosy and romantic atmosphere to it.

Ristorante Al Pescatore: for seafood

A good restaurant located in the centre of Sirmione is Ristorante Al Pescatore. It especially serves good seafood dishes, but also has some nice pizzas. It’s definitely a popular spot and is worth visiting during your time here.

Bar Grotte di Catello: for a refreshing drink after exploring

Bar Grotte di Catello is a nice yet simple place to have an affordable coffee or drink after your stay at Jamaica Beach or after exploring Grotte di Catullo. It’s located a few minutes away from these sights and is a pretty little bar.
