Review of Mirage 5.5

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The Mirage 5.5 is equipped with a swing keel. A swing keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.41 - 0.51 meter (1.35 - 1.65 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Mirage 5.5 is 3.01, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Mirage 5.5 is about 86 kg/cm, alternatively 483 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 86 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 483 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 26.93

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 16m 2 (172 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 6.1 m(20.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Genoa sheet6.1 m(20.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Mainsheet 15.2 m(50.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)

I just bought what seems to be a nice little trailer sailor. She's an 18 ft Mirage built it 1982. I've been having difficulty finding information about this type of boat. Apparently the company that manufactured her, in Florida, now only makes sport fishing boats. If anyone know anything about these or if a web site exists please let me know. These aren't the same Mirages that are built in Canada. Would you like to see her? E-mail me and I'll send you a mugshot. Thanks, Bryan Morton [email protected]

Mirage, huh? If it's what I'm thinking of, I almost bought one a few years back. It's a curvy little thing with a small cabin and tiny (or possibly no) windows. very nice boat. I think there are a few of them floating around up here, in fact if memory serves me correctly there are two at my marina in Sanford. I'll be heading that way on the weekend, so I'll check them for you. I know what you mean about rare Florida sailboats. I also own a Missile (Hull #39), a hard-chined, fiberglass planing dinghy built in 1959 in Clearwater. The mainsail still has the original wooden battens. Peter H23 "Raven"

One more thing, Bryan Try the HOW Smaller Boats Forum. It's mostly Hunter owners but who knows, they may have seen a Mirage somewhere too. Hmmm, why didn't that sound quite right? ;-) Peter h23 "Raven"

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Designed as IOR mini-ton.

mirage 5.5 sailboat review

Congratulations ! Good Choice ! Mirage is a well-made CANADIAN boat. Produced in the eighties. Have a reputation for high-quality fibreglass and a decent turn of speed, although not in the J-Boat category. As far as transport goes - check out http://www.boatforsale.net/class/default.asp Before you do anything with the rigging, get a Loos gauge. There are two sizes. You might be able to get away with the smaller one - it's about 10 bucks cheaper. Find out what size the rigging wire on your shrouds (the cables on the sides of the boat that go to the mast) are. If the clerk in the store tells you you don't need one unless you are racing - tell him I said he's an idiot. (just kidding - tell him you want one anyway) Read the little booklet that comes with it and follow the instructions when you are re-rigging the boat. Before you take anything apart - take pictures and label it. You don't need to undo the fastenings at the top of the mast. Just undo all of the fittings at the deck and then wrap your stays and shrouds around the mast. Be sure to inspect to top of the mast to make sure everything is working (lights, antenna, etc. and make sure that nothing is siezed/broken/corroding before you put it back up.) When you have the boat moved and re-rigged, come back and ask some more questions. Good Luck - you're going to really enjoy your boat.

Hi bushrat. I'm wet behind the ears here myself, but from what I've seen so far, this is a great place to be! I sail Lake Ontario - shall I Google Killarney, or can you give me a more adjective-laden description of the area?

Hi AI, Killarney is at the east gateway to the "North Shore" of Georgian Bay. It's a boating paradise with wind swept pine and pink granite shores with the white quartz ridges of the Lacloche mountains as a backdrop! Oh and the islands. I heard there were 48,000 of them somewhere!

mirage 5.5 sailboat review

Sailorman thanks for the tips. I think I'm going to get some help from Killarney Marine and Rigging for the mast as I have zero experience. Just wondering what I should be checking for. My biggest issue is that I am relying on a Marina in Annapolis MD to take things apart. Hopefully it isn't left in a rats nest of gear. Gary, I hope Dave at Bothwell can do the trucking for me. I had arranged it all only to find out that the marinas travel lift was down when the truck was in the area. Dave was gracious about it and all my conversations with him tell me he is the right guy for the job.

Yes Dave is he, brought a 30 footer from Boston for me. Super service and price. Gary

Gary you know the fish and chips are good when flights come in to get it. You can't get any better. Usually the fish isn't frozen as they own their own boat. If you ever go in early spring its the great when the whitefish comes out of the cold water. I crave it as soon as the ice is out. They sell it to the locals fresh. Cut it up in big chunks, salt pepper and onion, throw it in the pot thats it, parrrfect!

We have a Mirage 275 on Long Island sound (NY side). It's a great boat, but there weren't too many made - fewer than 30 I think. There's a great Mirage group on Yahoo where you can find lots of information on Mirage boats in general, and some details on the 275.

mirage 5.5 sailboat review

My first boat was a Mirage 5.5. I found it to be a well built, sturdy little craft with a decent turn of speed.

Took a lot of folks out on it for their first sailing experience and it always impressed. The only issue I had with it was that the keel got a bit sloppy in its fittings.

I heard the claim several times that the Mirage 5.5 was banned from a number of regattas because of that. They don't seem any more dangerous than many other little swing-keel racer-cruisers though. I've sailed one a few times and it does sail relatively well... not bad in light air, balances OK.
