The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

• All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
• Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

• The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
• Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
• Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

• The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
• BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
• Croatia – VAT: 13%
• Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
• France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Greece – VAT: 12%
• Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Montenegro – NO VAT
• New England – NO TAX
• Spain – VAT: 21%
• Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Once you’ve had an initial consultation, a broker will typically offer a selection of yachts that suit your needs and help you make a final decision. From here, the yacht broker will handle the entire booking process, from securing the initial boat booking to planning each element of your onboard itinerary, including docking points. In fact, you will often find that a broker will rely on their insider connections to secure the best deal for their clients.

Some people opt for a freelance yacht charter broker, but we’d suggest only heading down this route if you have a pre-existing relationship or they come highly recommended by someone you trust. How to choose a yacht

While your yacht broker will do the hard work when it comes to choosing a yacht, calling upon their wide boat knowledge to present a selection of yachts to you, to be able to do this properly they will need a solid understanding of your preferences, requirements and budget.

The key things you should consider when chartering a superyacht are: the number of guests you want to bring on board (remember the legal limit for most yachts is 12 overnight guests, including personal staff); whether or not the yacht needs to be child-friendly, the amount of indoor/outdoor space you’d like on board; where you’d like to travel; and the onboard amenities you’d like – for example, is an indoor swimming pool a priority or does a dancefloor sound more appealing?

The type of yachting vacation you’re seeking is also important when choosing a boat. For intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure, a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold or Ragnar by Royal Niestern Sand would be more suitable than a classic yacht, designed for luxury and comfort.

Bareboat vs skippered superyacht charter

When chartering a luxury yacht, you will sometimes be given the choice between a ‘bareboat’ or ‘skippered’ charter – bareboat being a crewless charter and skippered including a full complement of staff. However, you will find that when verging into superyacht territory, all charters are skippered for both your safety and comfort.

Typical crew members will include a captain, engineer, second and third officers, bosun, chef, chief stew, and one or more stewards. Your broker can help explain the roles of each, as well as support with hiring additional crew members.

For example, if you have a taste for adventure, ensure that there is a watersports instructor within the crew. Looking for a more relaxing onboard experience? Ask your broker to look into securing a masseuse for your journey.

When to book a superyacht charter

When to begin booking a yacht charter is an important question. Leading charter company Northrop & Johnson recommends reaching out to a broker no later than 10 months in advance if you want to travel during peak times (July and August in the summer season, Christmas and New Year during winter), and three to six months ahead for quieter periods. However, with popular yachts booking up as much as a year in advance, it’s advisable to reach out to a broker at least 12 months ahead of time if you have specific boat or date requirements.

When booking in advance, remember that local events will heavily impact availability. For example, if you’re planning a European tour, take note of events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix when both vessels and docking spaces will be in high demand.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?

It’s no secret that yacht charters are expensive, with many first-timers unprepared for the hidden costs. It’s generally accepted that the biggest price indicator of a yacht charter is boat size – so if you’re heading into superyacht territory, expect an impressive fee.

However, other factors will impact the cost of chartering a superyacht , such as crew reputation, ship design and the age of the vessel. For example, Fraser Yachts offer a week on the 298.5-ft Moonlight II which was first built in 2005 from €750,000 (approximately $815,000), but prices for the 278-ft Solandge, which was built in 2013 and refitted in 2019, begin at €1m ($1.1m) per week.

Although some charter costs are inclusive, meaning expenses such as captain and crew, fuel, food and drink are included, you’ll find that a ‘plus expenses’ charter is more common. With such charters, only the crew and ship are included in the price, an ‘Advance Provisioning Allowance’ (APA) is used to cover the necessary extras and is usually around 30% of the weekly charter fee. What the APA doesn’t cover, however, is crew gratuity which, although given at your discretion, is very much expected, with the going rate around 15-20%.

To avoid tarnishing your vacation with unexpected fees and charges, ask your broker for a full price breakdown beforehand, including any potential docking fees and additional taxes.

Superyachts are one of the most expensive items money can buy. Costing as much as nine figures to purchase — plus millions a year to maintain — they can also be considered one of the worst investments you can make.

If you're not like Mark Zuckerberg or Jeff Bezos and don't have hundreds of millions to spare, chartering a superyacht — any boat over 30 meters — can be a more economical option. But it is far from cheap. Renting, in layman's terms, a yacht for a week in the summer can cost upward of $1 million.

"Our charter clients are looking for a 6-star experience perfectly tailored to them," Katie Schneidman, a charter broker at brokerage Burgess, told Business Insider over email.

Take the Carinthia VII, a 97-meter yacht for charter from Fraser Yachts that costs more than $1.5 million a week to charter . Even split evenly among 12 guests, the most she can hold, that's about $18,000 per person per day.

You get a lot for your money : A glass-paneled swimming pool, a spa complete with Turkish baths and a beauty salon, plenty of water toys, and a crew of 33 ready to meet any of your needs.

"It's not uncommon to look for a deckhand who can also mix a martini, play an instrument, maybe entertain the guests with singing, and ideally even give a massage," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of Fraser Yachts, told Business Insider during the Palm Beach Yacht Show in March.

But there are a number of costs that aren't accounted for in that price.

Provisioning a charter yacht can run as much as 40% of the charter fee, Schneidman said. Fraser Yachts estimates the total is closer to 30%.

That means food, drink, and fuel for the Carinthia VII could cost as much as $600,000. Just a few years ago, provisioning ran about 20% of a charter's cost, an agent at Palm Beach Yacht Show told BI, but fuel costs have made it more expensive than ever to get caviar to the middle of the Med.

The industry standard for tipping runs another 7% to 20%, Fraser said, which would be between $105,000 and $300,000 for the Carinthia VII. Then there's the VAT, which depending on where you sail, can add another 20%, or $300,000, to the total cost.

Altogether, a week on the Carinthia VII can total $2.7 million — or just over $32,000 per person per day.

The full fee is due before setting sail, but it can be paid in two or three installments.

Once the charter is booked, the luxury experience begins right away. Clients will set an itinerary with the captain — the Carinthia VII sails in Greece and the Western Mediterranean — and the crew will stock the yacht with your choice of wine and spirits, as well as whatever food you want your on-staff private chef to cook.

But there is one thing which even the most experienced staff can't control.

"It is important to note yacht itineraries are at the mercy of weather," Schneidman said. And yes, you still have to pay — even if you don't leave the port.

What is yacht charter?

What time of year should I charter?

There are two main seasons in yachting – summer and winter. The summer season runs from May through October, with the peak summer season (and peak rates) in July and August. The winter season runs from November to April, with peak season running primarily over the holidays and into New Year.

Where are the most popular places to charter?

The most popular yachting destinations vary by season. During the northern hemisphere summer, the most popular destination is the Mediterranean . Locations such as the French Riviera , Balearic Islands , Corsica and Sardinia , Greek Isles and Croatia are favorites. During the winter months, The Bahamas and Caribbean are the top yacht charter destinations.

What type of charter experience do I want?

If you are looking to relax and unwind, a yacht with a spa and an onboard masseuse is ideal. Chartering with a family often requires a yacht with ample activities, water toys, onboard games and a dedicated movie room. Your charter broker will assist you in identifying a yacht with all the onboard amenities are important to you.

How big are the yachts and how many people can we bring?

Yachts can range in size from 80 feet to 300-plus feet and larger. Charter yachts can carry up to 12 guests maximum.

What type of yacht should I charter?

Think about the type of yacht that would best suit the size and character of your charter party. A modern motor yacht is ideal for a family charter while a sailing yacht is best for yachting enthusiasts. How long should I charter for and how much will it cost?

Most charters last between seven and 14 days, with rates quoted by the week. During the peaks of the seasons, July and August and Christmas and New Year, rates are usually higher. Most yachts also have low-season rates in effect during off-peak times of the year. Prices differ from yacht to yacht and reflect a variety of factors such as size, year built and amenities. Additional expenses include food, fuel, dockage and more. (See next question for more details).

Are there additional expenses beyond the charter rate?

Additional expenses depend on the type of contract used; MYBA and AYCA are the most common. The charter rate generally only covers the hire of the yacht and the crew and the owner’s insurance. Everything else is extra, including provisions and fuel. To cover expenses, an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is collected upfront and forwarded to the captain who is accountable for expenditures. The captain will present a detailed summary of expenditures at the end of your charter. Any unspent APA funds are refunded to you. Depending on the destination, other expenses might include taxes, VAT and delivery/redelivery fees. Ask your charter broker to confirm the expenses that will be associated with your charter.

How do I get to my yacht charter?

How far in advance should I contact a charter broker?

Brokers recommend booking six to 10 months in advance if booking for Christmas/New Year or peak Mediterranean season (July/August). If you want to cruise off-peak season, brokers recommend booking three to six months out. Availability changes quickly. It’s important to contact your broker early on to ensure a broad selection of suitable yachts from which to choose. Popular charter yachts book as far as a year in advance.

Helpful Information to Make the Most of Your Private Yacht Charter Vacation

By now you have a good idea about the basics of renting a private yacht. Chartering a luxury yacht is easier than you thought, but there are some important aspects that could make or break your dream experience. Please browse this section to learn about the finer details of yacht charter. Should you have more advanced questions about how to charter a yacht, let our team of charter experts guide your way.

Do all yachts come with a crew?

All charter yachts that Northrop & Johnson handles are crewed. Bare-boat charters, as charters without crew are called, are available, however, they are only available on smaller yachts. Northrop & Johnson charter brokers do not handle these types of charters.

Who purchases the food and beverages on the yacht?

The yacht’s chef and interior team will purchase all provisions for the yacht. The charter preference sheet (guests’ likes and dislikes) provided by the guests prior to the trip advises what to buy. They also will purchase any additional items needed for meals. The food is purchased with funds from the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA), an advance payment that will cover things like food, beverages, fuel, dockage, etc.

I’ve heard you can’t wear shoes on the yacht. Is this true?

This is true for most yachts. Some yachts do allow boat shoes on board, provided they are brand-new are not worn ashore during the charter.

I like to enjoy a cigar after dinner. Will we be allowed to smoke?

There are very few yachts that allow smoking indoors, but some may allow smoking in designated outside areas. If this is an important point for you, please make sure to mention it to your charter broker.

Are the crew always on duty?

Depending on the size of the yacht, the crew are always available to guests throughout the charter. From preparing midnight snacks to whipping up your favorite cocktails, they are on hand. The crew can be as present or as removed (for privacy) as you would like. They work in shifts, so different crew will be available at different times of the day and night.

Can we bring our pets on the yacht?

Some yachts do allow pets, but this will depend on the yacht. If this is an important point for you, your charter broker can help you identify yachts that accept furry friends.

Is there WiFi aboard the yacht and will my mobile phone work?

Almost all yachts offer Wi-Fi, but this is something to discuss with your charter broker and confirm with the captain. As for mobile phone service, your service provider will need to confirm if they cover the cruising destination.

Since we will be out at sea, is it legal to smoke marijuana on the yacht during my charter?

The yacht must follow the rules of its flag state and the local laws where it is cruising. Illegal drugs are prohibited on all yachts. If marijuana is legal in the flag state and destination, smoking will be up to the yacht owner and captain.

If we change our minds about the itinerary once we’re on the yacht, can we skip a place or stay longer in another place?

This situation happens fairly regularly aboard a yacht. It is subject to the captain’s discretion as well as the availability of dockage in the region. Speak to the captain about your changes and he or she will do their best to accommodate

Is there a minimum age for children on the yacht?

There is no minimum age for charter guests. Yachts are an excellent option for vacationing with Children. They offer many different activities, water toys and are extremely safe and comfortable. But some yachts are better suited for children than others. Speak to your charter broker about the ages of the children and your plans for the charter. They will help find the best yacht to suit your needs.

What are the cleaning procedures on the yacht, both before we arrive and while we are Aboard?

Each yacht has its own protocols for cleaning, disinfecting and hygiene. As a general rule, yachts are exceptionally clean and held to a rigorous standard. Your charter broker and yacht captains can share more information on the exact protocol aboard yachts you’re interested in chartering.

Will any of the crew be trained in first aid and CPR, and what type of emergency medical supplies are there?

All crew are trained in first aid and CPR and captains and Medical Persons in Charge have advanced medical training. Yachts also carry a vast array of lifesaving equipment and many have telemedicine contracts that connect them to doctors ashore.

What if there is bad weather?

The great thing about a yacht charter: it is often possible to adjust your itinerary and head for the sun. Although, a rainy day in port opens up the possibility of exploring local shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants.

What if we want to extend our charter once it is underway?

If during your charter you wish to extend, contact your charter broker. He or she will check the yacht’s schedule and availability and prepare the necessary paperwork.

Should I consider trip insurance for my charter?

While not required, a trip protection plan is highly recommended.

PRO-TIP: Trip cancellation coverage provides the charterer protection if you have to cancel due to illness or other concerns.

Should I tip the crew?

If you enjoy the service provided by your crew, you may wish to offer them a gratuity. While the level is completely at your discretion, it is customary to leave a tip of 10 to 15% of the base charter fee.

Yacht Charter: How Much Does it Cost? All Rental Costs Explained

How much it costs to rent a yacht isn’t always a very clear cut answer. There are numerous ways to charter a yacht and different factors can significantly increase or lower the cost of a yacht rental.

Here are the main costs to consider to estimate the total yacht rental price of your next yacht charter.

Yacht Rental Costs in a Nutshell

To calculate the price of a yacht charter, you need to sum the base fee of the yacht charter (the price you see displayed on websites), taxes (varies depending on destination), APA , crew gratuity and insurance cost . 

Depending on the details of your yacht charter, you will need to add between 30% and 100% on top of the base fee to have the total cost of your rental.

Here is an idea of the ranges you can expect for the yacht charter base fees :

• Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts under 50ft: €4 000 – €15 000 / week
• Motor Yacht – Sailing Yachts between 50ft and 65ft: €15 000 – €40 000 / week

How is the total price of a yacht rental calculated?

There are two main categories of yacht charters: all-inclusive or separated charges. 

The all-inclusive yacht rentals option (rare)

The all-inclusive option isn’t very common in yacht charters, and tends to be for smaller yachts and cruise where it’s easier to package a standardized offer.

As the name implies, all-inclusive yacht charter offers a price that includes everything: fuel, food, beverages, and entertainment (diving and fishing equipment).

The “usual” option: base charter rates and separated variable charges to add on top

In most yachting websites, the price of a yacht charter only refers to the  base price  of a boat at its lowest possible charter time.

It doesn’t include many variable costs such as food and beverage, fuel, taxes, insurance and so on.

To understand the total cost of chartering a yacht when it’s not all-inclusive (which is almost always the case), it’s therefore important to split the costs that are included in the base rate of the yacht (the price you’ll see displayed on a website) from the costs that are not included in that base rate , that you will therefore need to add yourself if you want a precise estimation.

Don’t worry, the math isn’t rocket science.

The formula goes like this:

Total yacht charter price = Base charter fee + APA + Taxes + Insurance

We’ll detail each costs in the following paragraphs.

The base charter fee of a yacht rental: Costs and factors included in the calculation

The base charter fee of the yacht rental is essential in calculating the total cost of your charter. Most variable costs are calculated as a percentage of that base fee and are simply summed up together along with the base fee to get the total cost.

Here is what you should know about the base charter fee.

The base charter fee follows a simple rule: the longer the yacht, the higher the charter cost

The boat’s size affects the base charter fee considerably. It determines the number of cabins and guest capacity , the number of staff on board, along with a lot of amenities that tend to get more spacious and more luxurious the longer the yacht gets. 

Everything that comes with the yacht (including the staff!) is included in the base charter fee.

The more reputable and in-demand the yacht is, the higher the base fee gets

A yacht reputation and popularity can also affect the base fee, even for boats within the same size range.

Boats are by definition limited in stock and follow supply and demand laws . When a particular yacht is in high demand, whether it’s thanks to its reputation, its features, the season or its recent appearance in a movie, series or TV shows the price of the charter can shoot up.

For instance, chartering a yacht featured in a James Bond movie such as  luxury yacht Regina  won’t cost the same as a regular model. Likewise for most yachts that are a part of the popular Below Deck TV show .

It can also be true for some classic yachts that had famous builders or previous celebrity owners.

The season does influence the yacht rental prices at the base fee level

Your yacht charter base fee depends to some extent on your date of departure. 

If you take your vacation during the busiest weeks of the year (high season) of a destination, you’ll pay a higher base price than someone who charters a yacht on low season dates.

In the Mediterranean, the high season is in summer while it’s in winter for the Caribbean. The yacht charter base fees will be at their highest during these months. 

Sometimes just a week or two can make a big difference to the price. Chartering a yacht in shoulder seasons can be a good idea when you are looking for good deals.

Likewise, since some destinations have very short seasons , it has increased demands and makes it more expensive.

International events will also increase the cost of a yacht charter. Expect to pay more if you want to attend the Monte-Carlo Masters (April), the Cannes Film Festival (May), or the Monaco Grand Prix (May) during your yachting vacations in the Mediterranean.

The destination you pick can affect the base charter fee of your yacht rental

Your vacation destination is an essential factor in the yacht charter charge that is included in the base fee. 

As the supply and demand law dictates, the more competition there is, the less you have to spend. It is why locations with large charter fleets are less expensive.

The Bahamas, BVI and the Mediterranean are for example more affordable than remote islands without established yachting industries.

The water toys are usually included in your base yacht charter fee and influence its amount

On a yacht, water toys don’t refer to your average backyard inflatable unicorns. Think instead of big equipment for marine activities: jet skis, kite-surf, kayaks, paddleboards, submarines, and expensive high-powered yacht tenders.

Some vessels come with sea pools or a giant slide to glide from the top of the boat straight into the ocean.

Most of these items, especially when they are in high numbers, can come at a cost that will be on the bottom line of your yacht charter invoice.

All the water toys specified in the yacht brochure when you make the reservation are generally included in the base fee . But it’s up to you if you want to rent others or even buy them. Make sure you ask your broker for advice about the cost of these extra if your budget is limited.

The base fee of your yacht charter is fixed and proportional to its duration

Most yacht charter companies only work ‘per week,’ and yacht owners rarely accept a shorter duration. Many companies have minimum stays of ten days, however some boats accept day charter or short periods, you can always ask your broker for an appropriate selection.

You can rent a vessel for two weeks or more, but the price won’t go down for longer holidays.

Yacht rental costs that are NOT included in yacht charter base fee

Now that we’ve seen what is usually included in the charter base fee, let’s find more about all these costs that you’ll have to add to the base fee to estimate your total yacht rental cost.

APA: the main variable cost of your yacht charter (add 20%-40% to your base fee)

The charter fee usually covers the cost of renting the yacht and the crew’s salary. But you still need to pay for fuel, provisions, and other extras for your trip.

APA is the standard system to pay your expenses on a luxury yacht charter, and it is generally a percentage of the charter fee. You’ll usually end up paying between 20% and 40% more than the base cost of the yacht charter in APA.

The amount varies a lot, depending on the ship and your activities. It will increase if the yacht has a higher fuel consumption, if you plan on cruising more than 4 hours a day, if you want to have onboard particular expensive brands, etc.

What does the APA cover?

APA covers all the day-to-day operating expenses. It also includes any special requests you might have while you’re on board. 

Here are the main costs of your yacht rental the APA covers: 

Food and drink

On your yacht charter, the chef can prepare all the dishes you want, whether you are vegan or low carb, whether you have allergies or require kosher meals. Make sure that you explain your food preferences to your broker.

Fuel Charges

Your fuel costs will depend on your boat, your itinerary, and whether you choose to cruise or stay at anchor. A sailing yacht charter can cost 10% less than a motor yacht charter because the fuel consumption is smaller.

This amount also includes the fuel expenditure of any water toys and tenders you use during your charter.

Harbor fees and dockage

The harbor fees and dockage will be more or less high-priced depending on your destination and season. All these costs will be included in your APA.

Communications Costs

For most people, yachting is about enjoying life outside of the daily routine. If you can’t survive without the Internet or satellite communications, you don’t have to worry. Your yacht charter will provide you all the digital connections needed. They won’t add much to the APA, but it’s still something that comes at a price.

Delivery fee

If you board or disembark the ship outside its usual harbor, you’ll have to pay a transportation fee to cover the fuel required to get your yacht to your requested destination.

Interiors and Laundry

The APA fee includes interiors and laundry costs to keep the yacht immaculate. But if you request unique decoration, it may add an extra charge.

Personal laundry services may not be covered depending on the yacht.

Taxes: a cost that varies a lot from country to country (add between 0% and 35% on top of base charter fee)

Taxes do have an impact on the total cost of your yacht charter, especially in some destinations.

For example, in Europe, chartering a commercial vessel is subject to VAT . But fees vary significantly according to your destination and itinerary. Some countries have a 0-tax rate (Montenegro, New England), while in others a passage in the international waters can lower the VAT rate.

The taxes can vary from VAT, national parks entrance (la Maddalena in Sardinia for example), countries taxes etc. the VAT and taxes will be based on the charter fee, so make sure you discuss this with your advisor to anticipate the cost.

Here are some VAT rate applied on luxury yacht charter in 2022 :

–  Charter in France  will be at 20 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Italy  will charge 22 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Spain  will charge 21 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Croatia  will charge 13 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Greece  will charge 24 % VAT based on charter fee with a discount of 60% on charter of more than 48h ending usually at 12% VAT, this is subject to change in 2022.

Moreover some countries such as Spain or Greece charge a licence for a yacht to be able to embark passengers for a paid charter in their waters, this explains why not every yacht can cruise in all countries.

Crew gratuity: a good practice to include in the cost of your yacht charter (add 15-20% to the base charter fee)

The crew on a yacht work even if you don’t notice it. 

Serving, cleaning, preparing, fixing, they are the key elements that make your charter a success. 

Even if tipping is not strictly mandatory, it is common practice to include a tip to the team when you are satisfied by their services. 

The suggested amount is around 15-20% of your base charter rate . It is therefore important to include this amount in your yacht rental price beforehand.

Yacht charter cancellation insurance: a small cost that can save you a lot (add 15% of your base fee)

Cancelling or shortening a yacht charter can be very expensive if you don’t have cancellation insurance.

It is a small price to pay to ensure that all the money spent on your yacht charter will not go to waste if some unfortunate event leads you to miss your yacht rental.

In most cases, your cancellation insurance will cost around 15% of your charter base fee.

A typical yacht rental total cost isn’t as hard to determine as it seems when you know all the variable costs and your base fee.

Once you have your base charter fee in hands, add the following costs to estimate the final amount you’ll see on your yacht rental invoice:

• 20% – 40% on top of your base fee for APA (low end for sailing vessels, higher end for motoryachts)
• 0% – 30% of taxes and VAT on top of your base price. Highly dependant on your destination.
• 10% – 15% on top of your base fee for crew gratuity
• 15% on top of your base fee for cancellation insurance

FAQ about cost of yacht charter and APA

Small motoryachts and sailing yachts under 50 ft (15m) can be chartered from 4,000€ to 15,000€ weekly.

Chartering motoryachts and sailing yachts between 50ft and 65ft costs between 15,000€ and 40,000€ weekly.

Between 65ft (20m) and 80ft (24m), you can expect motoryachts and sailing boats charters between 40,000€ and 70,000€ weekly. Between 80ft (24m) and 100ft (30m), the cost of chartering a yacht ranges between 70,000€ and 100,000€ weekly.

For yachts over 100ft (30m), the cost of charter ranges between 100,000€ and 1,000,000€ weekly.

APA stands for Advance Provisionning Allowance. You pay this fee in advance to cover food and drinks, fuel charges, harbors fees and dockage, communication, delivery fee various fees such as cleaning or interior design.

Advance Provisionning Allowance varies depending on your travel plans. Usually, it represents a surcharge of 20% to 40% on top of the yacht charter base price.

The APA is due one month before you set sail when dispensing your final charter payment. The captain directly receives the money and will supervise all the purchases made before and during your journey. He will be responsible for ensuring the crew stays within budget and will provide receipts upon request.

APA estimations are usually accurate. The captain will keep you updated during your trip. If you decide to go over the initial payment, you can top up the APA in cash or pay the balance during your trip.

With transparent communication, realistic budgets, and advanced provisioning, you may spend less than the APA and have the difference returned to you at the end of the cruise.

Get the base charter fee of your yacht rental, add taxes, APA, crew gratuity and cancellation insurance and you will have a very close estimation of your yacht rental cost everything included.

The base charter rate includes everything that is on a yacht: cabins, amenities, water toys along with the crew. Everything else (fuel, food, taxes…) come at an extra cost.

Crew gratuity is usually comprised between 15% and 20% on top of the base charter fee for most yacht rentals.

For sailboats in tax free areas, you can get away with a total cost of 30% on top of the base rate. In extreme cases (motoryachts in high taxed countries with big tips for the crew and cancelation insurance), you can more than double the base price. Most charters should be in between within the 40-80% on top of base fee range.

How much does it really cost to charter a superyacht?

While yachting is most likely the most prestigious way to travel, it isn’t reserved exclusively for billionaires. Owning large superyachts is a privilege reserved for only the very few but there is an opportunity to enjoy a week aboard one of these luxurious vessels. Chartering a yacht is far less expensive than owning one. Especially if your use of the yacht is scarce. So how much does it really cost to charter a superyacht for a week?

As an example, we will detail the expenses of a charter aboard Lady Carmen , a Hatteras 101′. She sleeps 10 guests, as most charter yachts, and features an on-deck full beam master suite with panoramic views. With a great array of toys and tender, a hot tub on the flybridge and an art deco interior she is one of the most popular charter yachts in the Carribean. 

The first expense when chartering a yacht is the charter fee of course. Lady Carmen is asking $53,000 a week for example. That first expense buys the yacht, the crew and the insurances for a week. Then comes the second major expense, the advance provisioning allowance (APA). Then advance is transferred to the yacht’s captain and will be spent on your docking fees, food, fuel used. That expense may vary depending on the yacht but is usually 30% of the charter fee. If it is not spent entirely by the captain because the guests simply do not engage in many expenses, it is restituted at the end of the charter. 

One of the last expense is the crew gratuity. Representing between 10% to 20% of the charter fee, it is a tip for the crew and the captain. On average that gratuity raises at 15% yet remains at the discretion of the charterer. The final expense is your travel to the yacht and plane tickets to the destination. 

If we recap these numbers, the total to charter a yacht as Lady Carmen in the Carribean raises to about $100,000 for a week for up to 10 guests. While owning a yacht such as Lady Carmen costs far more than the charter, there is a certain interest in chartering. If you are not sure you will be able to use the yacht extensively, chartering is probably your opportunity to enjoy the world of yachting. More than that chartering allows you to change destinations at will and explore the most remote area of the globe in the utmost comfort.

Northern Sun

The star yacht of Below Deck Down Under season two, the 50.8-metre Northern Sun (originally delivered as Hokko Maru ) has lived a full and fascinating life. She was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time and worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. As a result, she has the hardy constitution of an explorer, transformed from ship to superyacht under the stewardship of her new owners.

Northern Sun’s main deck is now dedicated entirely to entertainment, from the al fresco dining area to the main saloon with its piano and games table. Other leisure highlights include gym equipment, a dedicated library on the lower deck and an outdoor Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun pads and lounge beds. The owners’ addition of a forward seating area during her refit allows for versatile recreation, whether the mood calls for cocktail parties or quiet, waterside contemplation. 

Accommodation is for up to 12 guests across six cabins, with rich, warm interiors that feature natural materials such as narra and makore wood (commonly known as cherry mahogany). The ex-explorer also – naturally – has impressive stowing capacity. She's able to carry two Laser sailboats, scuba-diving equipment, a waterski and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide, with the broker describing her as a "family-orientated" vessel.

60 metre Benetti motor yacht St David is the star of the tenth season of Below Deck, returning to the Caribbean with beloved Captain Lee. A finalist at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards , St David is a full-custom yacht with both interior and exterior design by British studio Winch Design .

She has made appearances at a number of high-profile events such as the Cannes Film Festival and has been spotted at various locations around the world including the Seychelles, Red Sea and Abu Dhabi. Accommodation is for 12 guests in six cabins, with a split-level master suite that lets in plenty of light.

A palatial theme characterises St David ’s social spaces, with features including a generous skylounge and a spiral staircase that leads through all three decks and is lit by a skylight in the spa pool of the sun deck. Elsewhere, St David has expansive water toy facilities and storage, including scuba dive gear, a new 7.2m tender, new Waverunners, and an electric foiling surfboard.

Charter cost: St David is managed by Morley Yachts with a weekly charter rate starting from €325,000.

The star of Below Deck Mediterranean season seven, 49.8 metre Home is the first “green” superyacht to appear on the show. Featuring a ground-breaking combination of a super-efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form by Van Oossanen Naval Architects with power provided by a hybrid propulsion system, Home boasts reduced emissions and fuel costs for the eco-conscious charter guest.

Defined by a distinctive vertical bow and large expanses of glass, Home was penned by Omega Architects and launched by Heesen in 2017. Her interiors, designed by Cristiano Gatto in a modern “Ibiza style”, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins including a full-beam master cabin with a dedicated dressing room and a private office. There is also room for nine members of Below Deck crew on board, including Captain Sandy who has returned to the helm for the seventh season while Home is cruising the coasts of Malta .

The main socialising spot is up on the sundeck, complete with a Jacuzzi and sit-up bar, a shaded lounge and protection from the elements provided by glass screens. Closer to the water, a beach club with an air-conditioned gym is situated next to the swimming platform from which guests can launch the water toys including SeaBobs, Hoverboards, E-foils, Jet Skis and a Flyboard. Home also carries gear for scuba diving, waterskiing and wakesurfing for guests to make the most of their time on board.

Charter cost: Home is managed for charter by Burgess with a weekly charter rate starting from $245,000.

Sailing under her own name around the South Pacific islands of French Polynesia on Below Deck’s sixth series, the 56.4 metre My Seanna (now Starship ) was built by Delta Marine in 2000 and refitted in 2014. The Glade-Johnson designed superyacht reappeared again for season eight, where she was filmed cruising in Antigua. She is now starring in the latest season of the show, season nine, following her recent sale .

Key features include an open air Jacuzzi surrounded by an al fresco drinks bar, a gym, a sauna room, a helipad and a spacious beach club complete with a lounge, flatscreen TV and a small galley for preparing snacks or drinks. Her opulent interiors can accommodate up to 12 guests and 11 crew and even offer a home cinema and piano for entertaining in the main saloon. There are multiple toys carried on board as well, including gear for diving and spearfishing, Seabobs and equipment for underwater filming.

“The thing that I really love about My Seanna is the spacious cabins” says Worth Avenue retail charter broker, Shannon McCoy, who has appeared on episodes of Below Deck . She describes My Seanna as a “well-appointed yacht with a good collection of toys for the guests to enjoy,” offering an excellent layout with a variety of spaces that allows charterers “to have breakfast in a different place every morning or enjoy dinner whether it's outside under the sun or in the formal dining area.”

Lady Michelle

Sailing under her real name, Lady Michelle was the star of the sixth series of Below Deck Mediterranean , which was the latest series from the Med spin off. The 54.8 metre Benetti superyacht is the second biggest yacht ever to feature on the show, following just behind the 56.2 metre motor yacht The Wellington from season five. During season six Lady Michelle hosted charter guests in Ibenik, Croatia with Captain Sandy behind the helm.

First delivered in 2003, Lady Michelle features accommodation for up to 14 guests including a split-level master suite with its own panoramic observation lounge. Her Stefano Natucci interiors offer indoor and al fresco dining spaces, an expansive sundeck with a hot tub and dedicated gym. There’s also a range of toys at the guests’ disposal, from Jet Skis and Seabobs to fishing gear and a waterslide.

Charter cost: Lady Michelle is managed by Burgess with a weekly charter rate starting from $325,000.

The Wellington

Actually named The Wellesley , this 56.2 metre Oceanco superyacht is owned by property magnate and hotelier Khalid Affara and named after his luxury art deco hotel in London. Delivered in 1993, The Wellesley features extended deck spaces and Donald Starkey -penned interiors that replicate the grandeur of the eponymous Knightsbridge hotel. Highlights on board include a waterfall jacuzzi, an outdoor cinema for movies under the stars and a unique private club-style lounge complete with a Winston Churchill inspired cigar room. 

Describing why she makes an excellent charter yacht, James Graham-Cloete, director of charter management from TWW Yachts , says that The Wellesley is “ideal for entertaining family and friends, or hosting corporate events in utter privacy,” thanks to the fact that she “boasts some of the largest open deck spaces of any 56 metre on the water.” Graham-Cloete also adds that, on The Wellesley , “guests are invited to experience the same exceptional personal service, fine dining and attention to detail that has become synonymous with the hotel, on board a private superyacht,” while being looking after by her 14 crew members. “The crew have one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry and one of the best charter records, along with a full-time masseuse on board- making her the ultimate charter yacht!” says Graham-Cloete.

Charter cost: The Wellesley is managed by TWW Yachts with a weekly charter rate starting from €230,000.

Talisman Maiton

Built in 2006 by Turquoise Yachts , with a refit in 2012, the 54.2 metre Talisman Maiton sailed the coasts of Italy in the third series of Below Deck Mediterranean and was also captained by Sandy Yawn. Key features include a generous open plan sun deck with a forward-facing Jacuzzi and bar, al fresco dining spaces and a gym. Inside, she features six individually styled cabins for her 12 guests – including a master suite with its own private office – complemented by a sumptuous interior inspired by a combination of Asian and Art Deco influences. Her toy box is filled with snorkelling and fishing gear, Jet Skis and more for guests to enjoy while on board.

Charter cost: Talisman Maiton is managed by Burgess with a weekly charter rate starting from €273,000.

The 47 metre Heesen -built superyacht Sirocco took centre stage in both the second and fourth series of Below Deck Mediterranean and introduced captain Sandy Yawn, who has become a returning cast member on the show. Launched in 2006 with a refit in 2013, Sirocco features a dark blue hull and was designed inside and out by Omega Architects . She accommodates up to 12 guests and nine crew and offers charterers an eight person Jacuzzi, a gym, plenty of al fresco entertainment areas and a well-stocked toy box comprising Jet Skis, a waterslide and gear for wakeboarding or waterskiing. Worth Avenue retail charter broker Shannon McCoy describes Sirocco as a “very, very popular charter yacht” and with her fleet of water toys and pedigree Heesen design, provides “an excellent platform for a great time at sea.”

Ionian Princess

Appropriately named for the first season of Below Deck Mediterranean , which was set in Greece, the 45.7 metre Christensen -built yacht was captained by Mark Howard during filming. Launched in 2005 and last refitted in 2016, Ionian Princess features a luxurious Greek-style inspired interior finished with high-gloss sapelle mahogany joinery and custom in-laid stonework throughout. Ionian Princess can host up to 12 guests in six cabins, including two master cabins, and also boasts plentiful dining options and a sundeck equipped with a hot tub and sunpads. She also comes with a fleet of water toys from waterskiing and wakeboarding kit to Jet Skis and kayaks. Thanks to her shallow draft, she can also access hard-to-reach hidden gems in the Mediterranean Sea that other larger yachts aren’t able to. “ Ionian Princess is ideally suited for cruising the Mediterranean, which is the most sought-after region for summer yacht charters,” says her management team at charter brokers Northrop & Johnson.

Parsifal III

Parsifal III has been the star of the sailing yacht spin off of Below Deck , captained by Glenn Shephard during filming. The 54 metre Perini Navi was launched in 2005 and was designed by Rémi Tessier . She was most recently refitted in 2020, and offers accommodation for a total of 12 guests and nine crew. Her design has seen her scoop a number of World Superyacht Awards and provides her with excellent performance capabilities at sea; when the weather is on your side, Parsifal III can hit speeds of up to 18 knots under sail. While at anchor, there is still plenty to keep guests entertained with a variety of al fresco and indoor dining spaces, a flybridge hot tub, gym equipment, a swimming platform and a fully-stocked toybox.

Timing & Weather: The Mediterranean Yachting Season

The Mediterranean yachting season generally runs from April to the end of October. During the height of the season, in July and August, the climate is warm and sunny and the winds tend to be light. While this is the high season for all tourism, you can still easily avoid onshore tourists while afloat. The weather can also be good during the shoulder seasons.

Tip: Shoulder Season Means Value & Choice

Another good time to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons from April-May and September-October. These periods fall each side of the main summer season when the temperatures are still comfortable. Yes, You Can Really Charter Below Deck Med ’s New Superyacht, Home

Renting or buying Season 7’s new vessel won’t come cheap though.

When Captain Sandy Yawn and her all-new crew set sail on Below Deck Mediterranean Season 7, they’ll be in uncharted territory aboard a new superyacht, Home . While cruising the pristine waters of Malta, Captain Sandy was working for the first time on the 163-foot motor yacht, which Bravo described as a “complex hybrid vessel” that the Below Deck Med vet found to be “more unpredictable to navigate.” As the show’s Season 7 trailer previewed, Home won’t make it through the charters entirely unscathed either: In one clip, Captain Sandy laments that she hit something for the first time in her career, while another scene teases a potential “crashing” incident.

Rest assured that there weren’t any serious accidents because Home is currently available for charter in the Caribbean region at a cost ranging from $245,000 to $273,000 per week , depending on the season. Meanwhile, Home — the first diesel-electric motor yacht to appear on Below Deck — is also listed for sale with an asking price of just over $30.8 million. Per the listings, the superyacht, which Dutch shipyard Heesen built in 2017, sleeps up to 12 guests in six cabins and features contemporary, “Ibiza-style” decor. Among Home ’s many amenities are a large sun deck, jacuzzi, swim platform, air-conditioned gym, and sky lounge.

Home also sleeps up to 10 crew members. In Below Deck Med Season 7 , that includes Captain Sandy, returning Season 6 deckhand Mzi “Zee” Dempers, and newcomers: chief stew Natasha Webb, chef Dave White, bosun Raygan Tyler, stews Natalya Scudder and Kyle Viljoen, and deckhands Storm Smith and Jason Gaskell. Following her involvement in Hannah Ferrier’s mid-Season 5 firing, Malia White cited a scooter accident and pending exams — not fan backlash — as her reasons for not returning for Season 7. (“It’s not that I might never come back to the show,” Malia told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in May. “I’m just not on the next season.”)

Season 7’s “new boat with new department heads” might bring Captain Sandy some challenges during her “first time ever in Malta,” but she’s naturally ready to face them all head-on. The network also told viewers to expect “outrageous costumes, wild nights out, and some major inter-departmental drama,” which “doesn’t even cover what the charter guests are going to bring in the new season.”

As always, expect plenty of romance at sea, too. As Bravo’s first look teased, “boatmances” will be a major topic of conversation this season, including flirtations between Natalya and Storm, as well as several questions about the true nature of Natasha and Dave’s relationship. There could even be a fling between a crew member and a charter guest, too. Though Bravo is premiering the series on July 11, Peacock subscribers can access new Below Deck Med Season 7 episodes a week early beginning July 4.

Fans can also experience Home for themselves off-screen — but it will cost way more than their monthly cable bills.

The Below Deck guests are part of the franchise charm, but some visitors had obscene demands and left a poor impression on both the crew and the viewer's minds. In every charter season, the yachties entertain a handful of guests. They do their best to always say “yes” on a super yacht, no matter the request. Whether the guests want a stripper, a ten-course meal, or a blowout on the beach, the Below Deck crew members often find a way to make their dreams come true.

And yet, some guests were insatiable, requesting more demands than their presence sheets listed. Others had a nasty attitude and disregarded critical superyacht safety rules. Some guests even destroyed property on the yacht, making the crew's job even more difficult than it already was and upsetting the Captain . Here are some of the most troublesome guests and what they did to earn their villainous title within the franchise.

10 Timothy Sykes

Usually, charter guests expect a seven-star luxury service when they board a superyacht. Others expect a typical day just on the ocean. While Timothy Sykes may not have had many outrageous demands, complaining and returning almost every meal was certainly annoying. Especially since those gourmet meals were traded for something more traditional, like chicken tenders for his girlfriend. The food wasn't the only problem for this guest.

The Wi-Fi was inconsistent, making it difficult for him to work as a day trader on the yacht. Snorkeling and half-underwater lunches are not for everyone. However, what particularly made Timothy a villain in the franchise was waving an envelope full of cash in front of Captain Lee Rosbach's face and then removing 5 grand from it, leaving the Below Deck crew with only a 17-thousand dollar tip.

9 Steve Bradley

According to the various Below Deck members, drunk and handsy charter guests are part of the yachting experience. Unrealistic expectations are also part of the yachting charm. Sometimes, guests are all of the above . Steve Bradley appeared in Season 3 with some crazy demands, like a foam party when the weather wasn't suitable.

He also made inappropriate comments about how the stewardesses should wear a bikini . It turned out that ‘Uncle’ Steve was totally harmless and just liked to go buck wild on vacation. He appeared later in the series with similar demands, but since the crew already knew him, the second time around wasn't as uncomfortable.

8 Charles Yim

Sometimes influencers, clout chasers, or other reality stars will join the series, and they would also like to carve out memorable moments with the franchise. In Season 6, fellow reality star Charles Yim joined the superyacht. The trip was for both work and fun, but the Below Deck cast members were uncomfortable with how much time the guests spent on their devices.

To make the situation worse, when steward Caroline Bedol went to clean the suites, she found a used condom on the nightstand. The string of surprises continued as, later on, the crew also claimed the guests were having sex on the deck, and they could see it all on the cameras. While his group may have been boring compared to the other guests, his lack of regard for privacy or the crew members' jobs certainly earned him a villainous title.

7 Michael Blackton

‘Uncle’ Steve and his flirtatious ways may have been harmless, but the same cannot be said for the other guests. Michael Blackton would appear in Season 7 and develop a liking for stew Simone Mashile . This wasn't the first time she'd encountered flirty charter guests, but this quest would be the hardest to fend off.

She tried to avoid his advances and maintain a level of professionalism, but Michael wasn't taking no for an answer. The flirtatious behavior was beginning to escalate, making everyone, especially Simone uncomfortable. As a result, Chief Stew Kate Chastain had no choice but to keep Simone separated from Michael to make sure she was safe for the rest of the trip.

6 Chelsea Gonella

This guest baffled everyone on the boat, especially Chef Rachel Hargrove . In Season 9, charter guest Chelsea Gonella would board the superyacht with a broken jaw. Her mouth was wired shut and, as a result, she couldn't eat solids . This meant that the Below Deck Chef needed to blend every meal. While the other guests were eating delicacies like lobster on perfectly plated dishes, Chelsea was sucking it up through a straw.

To make matters worse, though, she never seemed satisfied. She was still hungry and stressed the Chef out even more. At one point, the other guests refused to eat until Chelsea had her meal. Ultimately, no one, especially Rachel, could understand why she wouldn't reschedule the vacation like a “normal person.” In the end, they were left with a measly 22 thousand dollar tip, piercing Rachel's already broken heart even more.

5 Krystal Bradley

This spot goes to another guest in Season 6. When the crew received the preference sheets, they thought this trip was going to be a fun little girl's adventure. They would soon realize that Krystal Bradley was one of their worst nightmares. Krystal, like many of the other guests, was overly demanding. That wasn't the main issue, though . Krystal also had a knack for laying hands on other people when she was intoxicated.

First, she got into a fight at the dinner table. Then she passed out, which was a blessing for everyone because her friends left her there, knocked out. They later returned to help her to her room, but Krystal had other plans and responded by punching her friend in the face. What made their stay even worse was how she acted like nothing happened the next day once she sobered up.

4 Brandy Bock Tott

It's not uncommon for the Below Deck stars and guests to let loose while vacationing on a superyacht. It's also common for guests to enjoy alcohol, or even request to have a drink in their hand at all times. Brandy Bock Tott from Season 7 was on another level, though. It was obvious that the charter guests were partying before they arrived, as Brandy showed up on the yacht incredibly wasted.

Her intoxication levels were already worrisome for the crew, especially since she was either sleeping off the liquor or drinking wine and mimosas nonstop. However, their charter got worse after she passed out on an excursion. To make matters worse, her group of friends seemed unbothered and barely gave Brandy a second glance. As a result, the Below Deck crew was left to tend to the passed-out drunken guest, only to find out that she had been drinking champagne every day for two weeks before her arrival.

3 Delores Flora

The Captain and the Below Deck crew do their best to give the guests whatever they want. No request is too big or too small. While they try to make sure all guests are satisfied, they have to prioritize safety above all. They are at sea, surrounded by predators, after all. Unfortunately, though, Delores Flora from Season 8 didn't seem to get the memo. Like many of the other guests, Delores got way too drunk and struggled to hold her liquor. After a few drinks, she was ready to party, which meant she wanted to jump off the boat late at night.

Captain Lee wasn't convinced the waters were safe enough, so he told the guests no. Delores thought she was above all because she jumped in, anyway. Captain Lee was irate and ready to cancel the entire charter. The crew had to take turns watching her room to make sure she didn't escape again. In the morning, Captain Lee decided it wasn't fair to punish the entire charter group, so he only made Delores go home. Delores wasn't finished leaving her final impression, though. On the way out, Delores jumped off the tender boat that was bringing her back to shore, ultimately proving Captain Lee made the right call.

2 Justin Richards

Sometimes, guests are rude to the workers and make their jobs more difficult. While it's not always appropriate, rude guests, especially when intoxicated, comes with the Below Deck territory . However, Justin Richards from Season 9, took it way too far. On the first night, most of the guests had gone to bed, except for Justin and a female guest. They were drinking and arguing, but at some point, their argument became a little too intense.

Both guests were beyond drunk and were crossing into belligerent. The crew tried to step in and smooth over the situation and suggested that maybe it was bedtime. Justin wasn't pleased. So instead of going to bed, he told Chief Stew Heather Chase to “go f**” herself and "Go throw yourself off the boat.” Captain Lee wasn't happy at all and was ready to cancel the charter trip.

1 Karan Bakshi

Some guests were never satisfied, no matter how hard the Below Deck crew worked. This was the case for Season 10 guest, Karan Bakshi . Karan boarded the superyacht with his family and a list of outrageous demands . One request in particular was to have hookah-friendly smoking spots. Fraser Olender and the interior crew made it happen, but that didn't stop the guests from pushing their limits.

They still tried to light up the hookah inside, almost causing a fire. They partied on the deck until 5am, making second stew Alyssa Humber stayed up all night with them . After they left, interim Captain Sandy Yawn realized they had broken property on the yacht and left burn holes. To top it all off, their tip was a measly 20 thousand, despite the crew going above and beyond in ways they had never before.

Turkish gulet yachts are less expensive than other charter vessels of the same size, and can often offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and can provide a lot of valuable expertise.

You can visit Greek Islands on your Turkish gulet charter vacation, but you will need to embark and disembark in a port in Turkey unless it has a Greek Charter Licence - which is very rare. 

Gulets are not available in the West Mediterranean cruising areas.

France is by far the most popular starting point for the classic "Mediterranean milk-run charter" route (Saint Tropez to Portofino), with this term coined in the industry to reflect the most celebrated and chicest locations along the Côte d'Azur.

The best place to begin a Mediterranean yacht charter is in Nice for itineraries along the coast and towards the Italian Riviera, with the majority of guests flying into Nice Airport before being chauffeured to its port or Antibes. Cannes Vieux Port (which is a mere 30-minute drive from Nice's Airport) is also popular if beginning further west towards Saint-Tropez .

Ibiza is also a popular starting point for Balearics charters, while Positano and Ajaccio are useful embarkation ports for Amalfi Coast and Corsica yacht charters respectively.

For East Mediterranean itineraries, Athens is a popular choice for charters around Greece's Aegean archipelagos, with the highest concentration of yacht rentals, while superyachts cruising the Ionian and Adriatic Coast tend to be flexible, with charters embarking from any number of popular destinations; from Venice  in Italy down to Corfu  in Greece's Ionian Islands.

Popular Marinas and Moorings in the Mediterranean

There are many marinas in the Mediterranean, but there are some, especially within the French and Italian Riviera that are highly coveted such as St Tropez and Portofino, which means mooring costs in this region in the summer tend to be highest and availability is often extremely limited.

If you would like to spend a night in port while on your charter yacht in the Mediterranean, be sure to make this clear to your crew or your charter broker well in advance, as there is strong competition for slips.

Below is our selection of some of the finest and most popular marinas in the Mediterranean:

French Riviera Marinas

• Vieux Port de Cannes  and Port Pierre Canto in Cannes, both cater to all sizes of yachts and with 1,200 berths.
• Port Cogolin  in Saint Tropez, which boasts 1,600 berths for yachts of up to 50m/164ft, and Port Vauban in Antibes, which caters to yachts up to a 165m/541ft LOA.
• Port de Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat , located near the idyllic village of Villefranche-sur-Mer. This marina has 560 berths that can accommodate yachts up to 60m/197ft in length.

Italian Riviera Marinas

• Marina di Loano , not far from the French border can accommodate 900 vessels up to 77m/252ft in length.
• Porto Mirabello , in La Spezia caters to yachts of up to 100m/328ft, and a perfect point for exploring the region's jaw-droppingly pretty Cinque Terre.

Amalfi Coast Marinas

• Marina di Stabia  is one of the most popular places to begin a yacht charter on the Amalfi Coast, and boasts luxury facilities and the capacity to host yachts measuring up to 100m.

Marina Piccola  in Sorrento has 280 berths, catering to yachts measuring up to 40m.

Corsica Marinas

• Port Ajaccio Tino Rossi , the capital's largest marina, has 300 slips and caters to yachts of up to 100m/328ft
• Port Calvi , located in the northwest with 150 berths for yachts up to 65m/213ft LOA.
• Port de Plaisance Saint-Florent  ,a pretty marina tucked away in the north with 920 slips, and in close proximity to vineyards and the stunning Saleccia beach.

Kos Marina , close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 berths with a maximum length of 80m.

Gouvia Marina , Corfu's most popular, situated in a secluded bay, with mooring of yachts of up to 80m, and boasts 1235 slips.

Athens Marina , accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.

Where to End a Mediterranean Yacht Charter

Portofino is one of the best places to disembark your Mediterranean yacht charter if you are embarking on the typical week-long yachting vacation along 'the milk run' (incorporating destinations in the French Riviera and Ligurian Coast). Guests usually take a helicopter back to Nice or Genoa airport.

For two-week-long Mediterranean charter vacations, Bonifacio is one of the most popular places to finish a private yacht charter in the Mediterranean due to its outstanding natural beauty. It boasts one of the most stunning port entrances in Europe, bordered by soaring limestone cliffs on one side, and on the other its impressive medieval old town teeters on a hilltop. Upon leaving, guests are chauffeured to nearby Ajaccio international airport.

For East Mediterranean charters, Athens is a popular disembarkation port, as well as Porto Montenegro and Dubrovnik or Split on the Adriatic Coast, all of which offer good transport links with international airports.

Mediterranean Yacht Charter Q&A

We advise booking your Mediterranean yacht rental at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, the fewer choices you will have to rent in the Mediterranean.

One of the wonderful aspects about renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is the exceedingly long season. For example in West Mediterranean locations like France, Spain and Italy, the best time to visit is usually from May until September. This balmy weather extends to well into October in East Mediterranean destinations like Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey.

For your Mediterranean superyacht charter, you will need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

When booking a Mediterranean yacht rental, do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests. 

Please consult your yacht charter broker for any other costs you may need to factor in for your yacht charter in the Mediterranean.

Below Deck’s Chef Jono says he’s a culinary architect who builds joy, interview

In this current Below Deck Mediterranean season, the crew has dealt with internal and external drama. From huge weather storms to personal upheavals, nothing is smooth sailing. For Chef Jono, he has weathered each wave and set himself up for continual improvement.

Chef Jono, Johnathan Shillingford, stepped into the Bravo world and brought a big personality to the galley. It seems that he is always willing to offer a kind word, vibrant smile, or occasional dance break to help alleviate some tensions.

But, his food has not always been culinary perfection. After stern scolding from Captain Sandy, he seems to have righted the ship during the season. It is always difficult to appease the demanding guests, but this self-taught chef is willing to put in the effort.

Recently, I spoke with Chef Jono via email. While Below Deck Mediterranean fans will have to watch the rest of the season, it seems that the affable chef is ready, willing and able to make it a memorable one.

Cristine Struble: What drew you to becoming a yacht chef and do you think that being self-taught is a benefit or a detriment to your position?

Chef Jono: “I have always loved food. I think being from the Caribbean, there's a huge culture of food where it's the gift of love. When I'm going home on Christmas break or something when I was in college, the first thing my dad would ask is, what do you want to eat when you arrive? I've always loved food. I've had a very close relationship with food growing up all through architecture school.”

"I became a yacht chef by accident when my best friend, who was another yacht chef, was on a yacht that needed a chef for like a week. And she's like, Jono, please do this. Like, you're amazing at cooking. I was used to throwing lots of dinner parties for friends and stuff at home. And she knew that I was pretty good at cooking. So I did this for a week and it turned into two years on that first yacht. And that's where I think I learned the most. In the first episode, I think they teased me not knowing where to put the trash out on a boat. I'm getting in trouble for it because I didn't take the trash out."

“That's how I became a chef. I think I always loved cooking, but the appeal of yachting was the travel. I left the Caribbean when I was 17, I had lived in Chicago for my first degree, in London for my second degree, I worked in Paris for a bit, and I spent some time in Rio. I loved traveling from the get-go. I guess yachting kind of afforded that as well as turning one of my passion projects into a profession.”

Struble: Do you think that being self-taught is a benefit or a detriment to your position?

Chef Juno: “I think (being self taught is) a benefit, 100%. I think I've loved that I've been able to teach myself. I don’t have to unlearn things that I maybe would have learned in culinary school to approach food in a more kind of fusion way or a more design way where having been self-taught, I've been able to not be latched onto a classic French recipe and doing it this way. I'm like, let's put a spin on it and make it even more unique or more favorable. So definitely it is a benefit, not a detriment, never a detriment.”

Struble: Do you think that cooking in a galley is easier or harder than in a professional kitchen?

Chef Jono: “Anything on a yacht is 100% harder. Any department, I think, especially in the galley, people compare food on a yacht to a restaurant. That's the biggest mistake because at a restaurant, there's like 10 chefs. On Mystique, I was by myself. So that's a whole other challenge”.

“And then, in a galley, you have certain equipment that you can't have on a yacht, like open flames and things like that, that add different flavor profiles to different types of food. I think cooking on a yacht is definitely more challenging than at a restaurant kitchen.”

Struble: In some of your Instagram posts you call yourself a culinary architect. How did your architecture training help you in the culinary world? And are there similarities to the creative aspects?

Chef Juno: “They're so similar. I think it's crazy. Since I've started branding myself as a culinary architect, I've noticed so many other architecture friends who kind of transition to cooking or have similar kinds of brands. I think for me, the influence is the process.”

“With architecture, you start from inspiration. I think as a chef, a lot of times the inspiration is the food. If you have an amazing product, like, oh wow, this tomato is amazing. Let me make the most beautiful bisque, or something with this, because that's inspiring you.”

“Other times, it's preferences that inspire you as a chef, right? Which is the same as architecture or a client coming in being like, oh, I want this two-bedroom house, but I want it to float over the water. And you're like, oh wow, my mind's blown.”

“Sometimes a guest comes in and they're like, we want something that's gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, keto. And I'm like, okay, that means I can't cook anything. Then it gets your gears turning and that preference or that somehow limitation to the food can be a huge inspiration.”

“I think those are the kind of similarities that I pull from both professions. I think it’s the way I approach inspiration through to execution.”

“And then, the joy, right? When I design a house for someone and they love it and I see it built, I'm like that's amazing. It's the same with food, except it takes about an hour, whereas a house takes a year or more. And so you feel that joy a lot faster, that gratification as a chef.”

Struble: This Below Deck season has been a rollercoaster in the galley. Have you ever had such difficult charter guests? And how hard has it been to manage the demanding preferences?

Chef Juno: “It's very demanding. Captain Sandy says this, it's about managing expectations for guests. (there have been) a lot of the varied preferences; some charters you have not too many crazy different preferences. The ones that were crazy at the time felt like, okay, well, how am I going to do this? Watching it over, I could see in retrospect, a lot of these varied preferences maybe weren't really that realistic. I don't know if I could have said something at the time, I don't know.”

“I'm proud of how I dealt with it and got through those varied preferences. I think there was no charter where, you know, at least two people were not happy, right? For me, two out of eight is still not good enough, but (it is) not a fail. And for me, learning from that, it's just being able to maybe pull more things out of the bag from crazy preferences.”

Struble: In some instances, the charter guests were less than pleased with the food. What would you have done differently in those situations? And do you think that they would have been difficult to please no matter what?

Chef Juno: “I think some people are difficult to please no matter what. Unfortunately, I didn't have that much guest-facing time because I was always stuck in the galley cooking. So, I wouldn't have been able to gauge if they were the type of people to be difficult no matter what.”

“But what would I have done differently when they were not pleased by the food? I mean, what else can I do differently? Yeah, I mean, I think that maybe I would have gone out and spoken to them more.”

“I think the Gigi charter, I was shocked when they left, and they said that they hated the food because Sandy gave me some feedback halfway through that charter. But every time I went out, they never said, “I don't like this”. They were kind of like, “oh, okay, yeah, nice, nice”. I think it was difficult to kind of gauge in that moment how to correct halfway through or how to do better. Typically, I go out after every meal, and if someone says, ‘oh, it was too salty or too spicy.’ then I can correct and be sure that the next meal is hitting on their preferences.”

Struble: Which charter do you think is the best representation of your food?

Chef Juno: “The Charleston charter was really fun because they were such amazing people, and they loved everything. Even this last group of guests, the ones who were a little bit rude, I was really proud of my food that time. I think they had a different style, more gastro food.”

“For me, plating (is something) I love it so much. I think I took the time to maybe prep a bit more so that I could spend more time with plating and making sure things were like ‘gorgina.’ I would say that so far has been my best representation. But, I think it was just so many challenges working on Mystique.”

Struble: Do you have a signature dish that you know is always a guest pleaser?

Chef Juno: “(I have) several. Every Yacht Chef has at least 10 signature dishes that are always guest pleasers. If it's an appetizer, I tend to lean into Southeast Asian food for guest pleasers, because they're always full of flavor and are super fresh. And it’s great during a hot summer, right? Because they're lighter, not too much heavy creams. I love doing Southeast Asian, like Thai curry.”

“I don't know if I got to do much of that though on the show, because of the guests and their preferences. They would also identify the type of cuisine they wanted to eat. A lot of the cuisine requests were kind of either sushi or Mediterranean Greek stuff. I've got lots of signature dishes.”

Struble:  You're from Dominica. What are some fun, interesting or unusual facts about your country? And why should we all visit?

Chef Juno: “Thank you for asking, because I love Dominica. I love being an ambassador for my country.”

“I think it's one of the most magical places in the world. And, I'm not biased, I've been to many places in the world. Dominica, it's called the nature island of the Caribbean. And for me, it's like Jurassic Park. You go there and it feels as if you're stepping into nature. The plant that you just paid 500 bucks for at the store, it's growing wild on the sidewalk. That's how gorgeous it is. There's so much nature, there's waterfalls. It's one of the only places in the world where you can see whales all year round. There's a huge whale and marine life population."

"We just won our first medal at the Olympics , which just happened to be a gold medal at the Olympics. So that's pretty awesome. And yeah, there's lots of rivers and waterfalls, lots of great hiking and canyoning. It's really like an adventure destination. If you want to go and stay in a resort, you can do that. But I would say it's appealing to the eco tourist who wants to get off the beaten track and have a sick fucking time. So come with me. Let's go.”

While there might be an opportunity to travel with him to Dominica, Chef Juno is back in the galley bringing his culinary architecture to Below Deck Mediterranean. What does the rest of the season have in store? Everyone will have to tune in to find out.
