1987 Nebe Miura 31'

The  Miura  remains one of South Africa’s favourite yachts, and one of the most successful designs to come out of the country. . . At just over 30' long, it is an incredible all rounder, for it seaworthiness, sea kindliness, general performance and cruising abilities.

These beautiful small yachts are inexpensive and simple, capable of sailing anywhere, and rugged as they come. They were designed for GRP production, and more that 250 were built.

The yacht has had some good upgrades within the last year, engine rebuilt and gearbox reconditioned in January 2016.

Double V-berth forward. The head is just aft of the V-berth. The saloon table can lower to make up another berth. A quarter berth behind the nav station makes up a total of four berths available. Recent upgrades have included new marine ply cabin soles overlaid with wood grain pvc lining.

Two burner gas stove and oven. Double stainless steel sink with hand pumped fresh water. Refrigeration – Built in Isotherm Compact 2301 System (Danfoss BD35F Compressor)

One. manual. No holding tank.

12 VDC power only. House bank is two Trojan 6v batteries totaling 225amps. Engine start, one 65amp battery. DC charging from the 130watt Kyocera solar panel and engine 80amp alternator. Electric 'Sureflow' bilge pump.

Construction

Miura's have a good reputation for duarbility in their native South Africa. Thick walled GRP throughout which inspires confidence to cruise further afield. Below are a few Miura Musings which the owner has passed on to me. He writes: "She was designed by Oswald Berckemeyer originally to compete specifically in the annual Cape Town to Rio race". "The Miura is a seaworthy boat of solid construction, with heavy duty rigging. A Miura's performance in heavy weather excels with speed and stability. She has a large tumblehome which explains the class name "miura" chosen by the designer, which is after a breed of pot-bellied fighting bulls in Spain." Cape Town yacht club currently believes that more circumnavigations have been completed in Miura's than by any other class of yacht.

This well kitted out U.K. Registered Miura 36 has been cruised around the Caribbean for a few years and then sailed over to Gibraltar where a change in plans has brought about a very reluctant decision to sell her by her present owners. Some internal woodwork needs a sand and varnish though her overall condition is very good and she represents great value for money when you look at the amount of new equipment onboard. 1987 Miura 31 now for sale with DBY Boat Sales.

Miura 31 yachts are amongst the finest vessels to have been built in South Africa.

They are well known for strength, sea kindly manners and many circumnavigations. They also make a fine twilight racer or family coastal cruiser.

This 1987 model is highly maintained and comes with numerous recent upgrades.

The Kubota 22hp diesel shaft driven engine was installed in 2016 and has just under 200 hours on the meter, presenting like new and recently serviced.

The standing and running rigging were replaced in 2018 and the steaming light, mast head light and VHF aerial were renewed then also.

The 4 batteries and 120 watt solar panel are all 2018 as is the autopilot, 12v fridge and 12v freezer.

A new Fusion bluetooth sound system with cockpit speakers pumps out the tunes whilst you are well protected by the large bimini and spray dodger.

The fully battened main which drops nicely into a boom bag with lazy jacks is easy to use and the brand new furlex furler makes the Genoa a pleasure to roll out also. This is simple sailing at it's best. There is an as new spinnaker with pole and a # 3 jib also amongst the sail wardrobe.

The champagne seats on the pushpit are strong and set up for easy helming with a grand view whilst the auto tiller keeps the yacht on course.

There is a 2.4m inflatable tender and electric outboard for trips to shore.

The current owner has spared no expense at keeping this fine yacht in such good overall condition. Antifouled in July 2019, she is ready for summer.

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Named “Miura”, it was originally equipped with two V-8 MerCruiser engines, but later received two V-12 units made by Lamborghini. In 1984, Alberto Petri was a newcomer to competitive powerboat racing. However, when the UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) season came around, he would win the European Championship first trials with Miura in Viareggio, the hometown of CUV. Petri, alongside local champion Franco Statua, would then win CUV the boatbuilder’s third World Championship title in 1984 and cement the company as the leading manufacturer of winning Off-Shore boats. In 1985, Petri raced Miura as a privateer, as documented by photographs showing him competing in a race in Cowes, England, of that year. This CUV had the MerCruiser engines replaced for Lamborghini V-12s early in its life, producing 720 brake horsepower each. It is said that Ferruccio Lamborghini had two V-12s in his own RivaAquarama, inspiring the then-owner of the famous company from Sant’Agata Bolognese, Patrick Mimran, to develop an engine for Off-Shore racing. These engines weighed 360 kilograms and were lighter than the diesel powertrains normally used to power Off-Shore boats.
