Is there a No Escape trailer?

Yes there's an official No Escape trailer plus an earlier teaser trailer, and the action looks intense. There's a great tropical setting too! Do check out both trailers below...

No Escape plot

Some of the No Escape story is told in flashbacks as it follows best friends Lana (Abigail Lawrie) and Kitty (Rhianne Barreto) who have fled the UK, on the run from the law. As the story unfolds and we see flashbacks and it’s clear the two young women are caught up in a terrible event and are unable to ever return to the UK. The pair find refuge on a romantic yacht called The Blue, which is sailing through south east Asia, and excitedly throw themselves into their new life.

Life on The Blue seemingly provides the perfect hideout and escape for the girls, however tensions on board between skipper Aaron, played by former Neighbours actor Jay Ryan, and other crew members, including his younger brother Denny (Sean Keenan), soon start to spill over as more disturbing discoveries come to light. The Blue’s crew consists of a number of enigmatic, gorgeous people who are embracing the glamorous life on board but this shiny façade belies an undercurrent of lust and greed. It eventually leads to a death in their midst, and Lana and Kitty end up in terrible danger. A distress call is made and the police in northern Australia find the yacht deserted. So how did the girls’ dream life end up going so badly wrong?

Lana and Kitty flee the UK for the Far East... but what are they hiding?

No Escape cast — Abigail Lawrie on playing Lana

In No Escape , Abigail Lawrie plays Lana, who is searching for a new life. "The action flicks between the present day and the past," explains Abigail whose character, Lana, is seen being questioned by the police in early scenes. "I was intrigued because Lana barely speaks to start with. She’s insular, she’s hard to read and a lot more reserved than Kitty. She’s also very good in a crisis. It gets increasingly dark. There is lots of suspense and secrets are unleashed."

* Abigail Lawrie played Margot in Sky's action series Strike and starred as Anna Worth in Tin Star . She also appeared in The Casual Vacancy and Good Omens .

Lana (Abigail Lawrie) and Kitty (Rhianne Barreto) are on the run in south east Asia.

Rhianne Barreto on playing Kitty

Rhianne Barreto plays Kitty, Lana’s best friend and partner in crime. She told us: "My character Kitty is far more extrovert. She has a lust for life and wants to experience everything so she’s constantly pulling in the opposite direction to Lana. There are secrets within secrets. What’s exciting is there’s escapism with the beautiful scenery, there’s a love story element but it’s also an action series and a thriller, too."

* Rhianne Barreto previously starred in the BBC1 comedy series The Outlaws , alongside Stephen Merchant and Christopher Walken. She played Bekhal Mahmod in the drama Honour and has also appeared in the series Strike Back and Hanna .

Rhianne Barreto as Kitty on board The Blue.

No Escape on Paramount+ review: this nautical drama is a white-knuckle ride

no escape yacht

Despite the unbelievable popularity of Netflix’s steamy reality show Below Deck, its die-hard fans might reconsider their desire to become an easy-breezy, port-hopping yacht attendant after watching Paramount+’s No Escape.

Based on Lucy Clarke’s fantastic novel The Blue, the show’s very first frame plunges viewers into an almost supernaturally eerie crime. Emergency responders are inching through a ransacked yacht room by room; on the wall of one of the cabins, written in a barely legible, bloody scrawl, is simply: “I confess”.

We first meet Lana (Abigail Lawrie) as she’s being questioned by Australian police. From there, the bulk of the show’s plot unfolds via flashbacks, of Lana and her best friend Kitty (Rhianne Barreto) on the run.

Lana and Kitty happen to be casual criminals. Flush with cash, they’re paying their way through the Philippines using stolen credit cards and wallets – which leads them onto a yacht named The Blue, which is populated by an interesting group of misfits.

As they fall deeper into this transient, nomadic life, the characters drink and party themselves into oblivion, refusing to give up their own personal ‘paradise’, and refusing to acknowledge that they are ultimately imprisoned by it. It’s like Spring Breakers on ketamine.

Well, how else does the collective - chock-full of entirely self-interested escape artists - navigate the after effects of a crime while aboard a vessel in the middle of the ocean with, quite literally, no escape?

BAFTA award-winning Lawrie, who was so good in Sky Atlantic’s Tin Star, and rising star Barreto are stunning, with their compelling, emotionally charged performances brought to life by director Hans Herbots – whose work includes BBC One and Netflix’s true crime thriller The Serpent.

In fact, much like a true crime documentary (only with more sex, partying, and teenage drinking) No Escape reels the viewer in, frame by frame. It’s helped by the lush, tropical landscapes which provide the series’ background – the show was filmed in some of Thailand’s most idyllic locations.

The writers do an excellent job of giving the six supporting characters making up the crew on The Blue a fascinatingly mysterious backstory. Are they and the leads likeable? Not really, but they’re incredibly watchable, and the gripping plotting only winds viewers in tighter.

Abigail Lawrie & Rhianne Barreto in Yacht Thriller 'No Escape' Trailer

by Alex Billington May 15, 2023 Source: YouTube

No Escape Trailer

"It's not them I'm worried about." Paramount+ in the UK has unveiled an official trailer for a horror thriller film titled No Escape , from director Hans Herbots and writer Kris Mrksa. Reinventing themselves on the other side of the world, 19-year-old Brits Kitty and Lana find refuge on a yacht in the Philippines called "The Blue" - full of beautiful people, parties and endless beaches. But in joining her crew, they fall into far greater dangers than the ones they were trying to escape. Sounds like a modern version on The Beach , involving a yacht and pirates this time. Adapted from a book by Lucy Clarke. "It's been the most incredible experience to see my novel re-imagined for screen. I’ve loved every moment of the journey from reading early scripts to visiting the set in Thailand. The series is breathtaking: transportive, gripping, and thrilling from beginning to end. I can't wait for viewers to fall in love with it, too!" Starring Abigail Lawrie , Rhianne Barreto , Susie Porter , Jay Ryan , Sean Keenan , Colette Dalal Tchantcho , and others. Jump onboard below.

Here's the official UK trailer for Paramount+'s mini-series No Escape , direct from YouTube :

No Escape season 2 potential release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Could we be back for another jolly on The Blue?

preview for No Escape - Official Trailer (Paramount+)

Atop the luxury yacht The Blue, the first season of No Escape certainly went out with a blood-spattered bang.

The Australian authorities had been asking questions about the abandoned yacht throughout the seven episodes. What happened to the four people who were registered to be aboard? And what did suspicious Lana, who had turned up in Oz after a stay on the romantic liner days before its crew's disappearance, know about the whole thing?

The mystery was solved in a series of flashbacks in the last episode of No Escape . The tragic truth of what happened to Kitty was finally revealed, as was which of the crew did survive that bloodbath ending.

Now we've had a moment to catch our breath and process the finale, here's everything we know about the possibility of a second season for the Paramount+ thriller.

abigail lawrie, rhianne barreto, no escape

No Escape season 2 potential release date: When will it air on Paramount+?

Unfortunately, we don't yet have any word from the people at Paramount+ on whether No Escape will be renewed for a second season.

However, we can take some optimism for the show's future from the fact it was billed as a UK drama series, rather than a mini-series, ahead of its release. So, there may be more of the sea-based caper to come.

For now, it's best to check back here as we will be updating this space as and when we receive news.

rhianne barreto, abigail lawrie, no escape

No Escape season 2 cast: Who's in it?

Well, we already know that much of the cast would not be returning for a second season if one is announced, after the majority of The Blue crew members met a sticky end in the first season.

The show's star Lana, played by Abigail Lawrie, would certainly be able to return and perhaps show the aftermath of the ordeal.

In the final episode we finally learned what happened to her bestie Kitty (Rhianne Barreto), after she had been missing from the present-day timeline for the entirety of the show.

A flicker of hope emerged when the police learned a female survivor of The Blue had been found adrift, but when Lana rushed to the hospital, it was Shell (Colette Dalal Tchantcho) who had been rescued from the water.

Shell finally explained what happened on board – and how murderous rampaging Denny (Sean Keenan) had shot a crying and defenceless Kitty as she called out for Lana, before he tipped her body overboard into the Philippine Sea.

The show ended with a poignant flashback to the best friends sitting together on a beach, as they admired their matching ankle tattoos. So, perhaps Kitty could return for a second season, if only in a flashback capacity.

narayan david hecter, no escape

Adding to Denny's stomach-churning body count was his brother Aaron (Jay Ryan) and Joseph (Narayan David Hecter), before he met his own fateful end over a cliff in Australia. So, it's safe to say that unless No Escape season two was to be a prequel, none of these characters will be returning.

No Escape season 2 plot: What will happen?

The final episode of the season continued to flip between the past and the present to reveal the secrets of what unfolded on The Blue after Lana jumped ship.

Based on a novel by Lucy Clarke, the Philippines-based drama followed much of the story of the book and so would have to source new material for a second season if it gets the green light.

One of the things that would definitely be absent from the drama is the relationship that was at the core of the first season, between Lana and Kitty. They had been on the run from some wrongdoing back in the UK, which we finally learned the truth of as Lana confessed to the Australian coppers – so, could the show return to the UK with Lana to face the music for what they did to Sandra?

Perhaps, but one of the show's foundational elements was the idyllic escapist setting, so it would certainly be a shame if the drama pulled us back to the noticeably less sun-soaked lands of London.

jay ryan, colette dalal tchantcho, no escape

A much more interesting prospect for a second season could be The Blue itself. While there doesn't seem much scope for this cast to regroup for another season, one of the final scenes of the show sees the cursed Blue bobbing in the waters of the Australian marina.

So the romantic yacht could be what lives on to tell another tale, particularly if the show goes down a similar route to The White Lotus , where the first two seasons did not have much narrative through-line beyond a hotel franchise and the indomitable Tanya, played by Jennifer Coolidge.

No Escape could similarly return to The Blue, with a fresh batch of misfits to go on a sojourn about the liner in the middle of the ocean – in all likelihood, with devastating results.

Five superyacht victims found in same cabin ‘trying to escape’

Five passengers who died on the sunken superyacht Bayesian were found in one cabin where they had gathered in an apparent attempt to escape, Italian investigators revealed on Saturday.

The five included Mike Lynch, the multimillionaire tech entrepreneur . The body of his daughter, Hannah, 18 , was found alone in another cabin.

The passengers appear to have sought refuge on the port (left) side of the boat, where the last air pockets remained as the vessel tipped over on its starboard side and started sinking.

Specialist divers from the Italian coast guard and fire service found five bodies in the first cabin on the left and Hannah’s body in the third cabin on the left.

Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra, a senior officer from the fire service, said that when the boat sank, it came to rest on its starboard (right) side.

He explained: “The yacht tended to the right and obviously the bodies tried to go to the other side and take refuge in their cabins. We found five bodies in a cabin on the left and another one in the third cabin on the left. They were in the higher part of the shipwreck.”

Raffaele Cammarano, one of two prosecutors leading the case, said: “There can be no certainty about the behaviour of the passengers on board, at the moment. It is probable they tried to escape but we have no real details about that, that will emerge in the course of the inquiry.”

He said the passengers “were asleep below deck and the others weren’t”.

Asked if Mr Lynch and his guests were warned of the approaching storm, he said: “That’s precisely what we’re trying to ascertain from the statements made by the survivors.”

Questions are being asked as to why six passengers died while all but one of the crew – the boat’s chef, a Canadian of Antiguan origin – managed to escape the sinking ship and survive.

Investigators want to establish whether the captain and crew tried to raise the alarm and evacuate the sleeping passengers from their cabins.

Data from the ship’s Automatic Identification System or AIS reportedly shows that there was a 16-minute period between the storm hitting the 184ft-long Bayesian at 3.50am on Monday and the vessel sinking at 4.06am.

At a press conference on Saturday in the town of Termini Imerese, about 15 miles from where the yacht sank, prosecutors confirmed that they were investigating charges of multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck against “unidentified persons”.

Ambrogio Cartosio, the chief prosecutor in the case, said the charges have not yet been levelled at anybody specifically. The investigation is in its very early stages, he added.

The captain of the yacht, New Zealander James Cutfield, was questioned for two hours by investigators earlier this week.

The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Monday when the Bayesian was hit by an intense storm while it was moored about half a mile off the small town of Porticello, Sicily.

Prosecutors said it was not a tornado but a downburst – a weather phenomenon in which powerful winds descend from a thunderstorm and spread out once they hit sea or land. They can cause damage equivalent to a tornado.

Investigators said the storm which hit the Bayesian at around 4am on Monday was “an extreme event” that happened “really, really suddenly”.

Weather forecasts for the area had not suggested such an extreme event, said Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, of the Italian coast guard.

“This was an abnormal meteorological condition,” he said. “And as you can see from the internet,  there was forecasts from midnight to 4am, winds of a strength of five from the north-west and the west and a storm alert. But there wasn’t an alert of a tornado.”

Questions are also being asked about how the storm sank the Bayesian but left another yacht, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, unscathed, even though it was only 200 yards away.

Its crew came to the rescue of the survivors from the Bayesian, who managed to escape in a life raft.

The four people whose bodies were found in the cabin with Mr Lynch were Jonathan Bloomer , the chairman of Morgan Stanley International bank, and his wife Judy, and Chris Morvillo, a partner in Clifford Chance, the legal firm that successfully defended Mr Lynch in his fraud trial, and his wife Neda.

Hannah’s body was brought ashore on Friday. Her mother, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors.

The seventh victim was Recaldo Thomas, the Canadian chef, whose body was recovered at the scene on Monday.

In response to a question from The Telegraph at the prosecutors’ press conference, Mr Cartosio said there was no legal obligation for the skipper and crew, who are staying in a four-star hotel on the coast a few miles from where the boat went down, to remain in Sicily.

But, he said, he expects them to stay and to show “maximum cooperation” with the investigation. They have so far been “very cooperative”, he said, adding that he may want to question them again.

The investigators were asked if there was any evidence that any of the yacht’s hatches were open when the storm hit.

Mr Cammarano said: “This kind of evidence is going to be fundamental to the inquiry so it is extremely difficult or impossible for us to reply at this stage, we are still trying to establish the facts.”

Mr Cartosio was asked how such a large, sophisticated yacht could have sunk in a few minutes. He said that was one of the key questions that investigators will be pursuing.

Divers have yet to find the yacht’s black box, because of the difficulty in searching the damaged vessel , which is lying 165ft beneath the surface.

Prosecutors refused to reveal any details about whether divers had found that hatches had been left open, allowing water to flood in, or whether the keel had been raised before the coming storm, making the yacht more unstable. They said: “We can’t reveal anything at this stage. The whole matter is sub judice and we’re waiting for an analysis to confirm the information.”

The yacht will be raised from the seabed and recovered as part of the investigation, prosecutors said, with the cost to be borne by the vessel’s owners.

Mr Cartosio would not say when the operation would begin nor how long it could take.

Post-mortem examinations have not yet been conducted on the seven victims, investigators said.

10:51 AM BST

Press conference concludes.

The press conference has been concluded.

Here is what we know so far.

The chief prosecutor, Ambrogio Cartosio, has said it was “probable” that manslaughter offences were committed.

Several of the passengers were asleep when the storm hit, which may explain why they were not able to escape.

Divers have yet to find the yacht’s black box, due to the difficulty of searching the damaged vessel.

The yacht was hit by a downburst of wind and rain and not a tornado as was previously suggested.

Five bodies of those who died in the incident were found in the same cabin.

The vessel’s owner will cover the full cost of retrieving the yacht from the seabed.

10:39 AM BST

Downburst believed to have hit yacht.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said: “It does look as if it was a downburst, but we will be more precise on that score, certainly later on. There is no certainty about it, it is pure hypothesis.

“It is very unlikely the physical situation will have been really recorded very precisely.”

10:30 AM BST

Probable that manslaughter offences were committed, say prosecution.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said: “For me it is probable that offences were committed that it could be a case of manslaughter but we can only establish that if you give us the time to investigate.

“Media timing is completely different from that of a prosecutor.

“We need a minimum amount of time to come to a proper scientific conclusion.”

He added that investigators had yet to establish whether the captain or crew were responsible for the passenger’s deaths or whether the ship builders were to blame.

“We will be establishing each element of responsibility. That will be done by the inquiry,” said Mr Cartosio.

10:24 AM BST

Yacht’s crew responsible for anticipating changes in weather.

The coast guard admiral said the yacht’s crew were responsible for anticipating any changes in the weather that may have presented a danger.

“Whether or not they decide to drop anchor in that place is entirely up to them. We’re not involved in evaluating the risk element to private vessels. That is something that should be done [by them],” he told reporters.

10:23 AM BST

We have no idea why five bodies were found in same cabin, say prosecution.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said: “The bodies were found in a cabin which was not theirs, but this doesn’t give us any kind of certainty about what happened.

“We have no idea of the reasons for them all being found in the same cabin.”

10:19 AM BST

Passengers were asleep during storm.

It remains unclear whether those on board who died in the tragedy had been warned by the crew of the approaching storm or whether any attempt had been made by the crew to rescue them.

One of the prosecutors said the investigating team was trying to establish whether any attempt had been made by the crew who survived the disaster to rescue the passengers.

Asked why a number of passengers had been left behind, he said: “They were asleep underneath and the others weren’t.”

Responding to a question about whether the passengers were warned of the approaching storm he said: “That’s precisely what we’re trying to ascertain from the statements made by the survivors.”

Yacht’s distress signal not launched properly, says coast guard

Coast guard rear admiral Raffaele Macauda said the yacht’s emergency distress signal was not launched properly or at the right time.

“We cannot say when the distress signal was first launched,” he said.

10:14 AM BST

Yacht hit by ‘downburst’ of wind and rain.

The assistant prosecutor said the super yacht was hit by a “downburst” of wind and rain, not a tornado as has previously been suggested.

10:12 AM BST

Yacht’s passengers probably tried to escape.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said “there can be no certainty” about the behaviour of the passengers on board, at the moment.

He said: “It is probable they tried to escape but we have no real details about that, that will emerge in the course of the inquiry.

“But there should be some evidence from the exact place of the retrieval of the bodies.”

Coast guard rear admiral Raffaele Macauda said the owners of the yacht will bear the full cost of the vessel’s retrieval.

10:07 AM BST

No legal obligation for crew and captain to remain in sicily.

In response to a question from The Telegraph, chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio says there is no legal obligation for the skipper and crew to remain in Sicily.

But he expects them to stay and to show “maximum cooperation” with the investigation.

Prosecutors may well want to question them again, he says.

10:05 AM BST

Yacht captain should have been aware of storms, say coast guard.

The chief of the coast guard said he would have expected the yacht’s captain to be aware of approaching storms on the night of the tragedy and prepare safety measures accordingly.

He said: “They are vessels that can monitor these events and one would have thought the captain had taken precautions.”

10:04 AM BST

A crew member was responsible for the hatches, says prosecution.

The prosecution is asked whether there there was any evidence of the hatches being battened down before or during the storm.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said: “This kind of evidence is going to be fundamental to the inquiry so it is extremely difficult or impossible for us to reply at this stage, we are still trying to establish the facts.”

On the question of the hatches, he said that information will be gleaned on the retrieval of the wreckage.

“There was a member of the crew who was detailed to supervise the opening of the hatches,” he said.

He added the crew and captain have all been very cooperative with the prosecution.

09:56 AM BST

Intense storm was not predicted.

Coast guard rear admiral Raffaele Macauda said: “This was an abnormal meteorological condition, and as you can see from the internet there was forecasts from midnight to 4am, winds of a strength of five from the north-west and the west and a storm alert.

“But there wasn’t an alert of a tornado.”

He said given the conditions there was nothing to suggest an “extreme situation” arising.

09:53 AM BST

Key question of how yacht sank in a few minutes will be investigated.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano is asked how such a large, sophisticated yacht could sink in a few minutes. He says that is one of the key questions that investigators will be pursuing.

09:52 AM BST

Yacht’s black box still not found.

One of the inquiry team’s prosecutors said divers had yet to find the yacht’s black box, due to the difficulty of searching the damaged vessel.

He also refused to reveal any details about whether diver had found that hatches had been left open, allowing water to flood in, or whether the stabilising keel had been raised before the coming storm, making the yacht more unstable.

“We can’t reveal anything at this stage, but the facts will be confirmed by the later search of the wreckage,” he said. “The whole matter is sub-judice and we’re waiting for an analysis to confirm the information.”

The press conference was told it may take two to three months to raise the wreckage of the superyacht.

09:47 AM BST

No timeframe given on when yacht will be retrieved from seabed.

Coast guard rear admiral Raffaele Macauda says he cannot yet give a timeframe for when the yacht will be raised from the seabed or how long it will take. But it will happen.

09:46 AM BST

We will not yet be giving information about the yacht’s keel, say prosecution.

The prosecution has said they will be not be giving information about the state of the yacht’s keel or hull at this time.

Raffaele Cammarano said: “There will be no further statements until the inquiry is concluded. This data cannot yet be revealed because the whole matter is sub-judice, so we are waiting on analysis to confirm on the investigation.

“So we will not be giving any information about the keel or the hull.”

He confirmed they have no results to provide yet on the autopsy.

Mr Cartosio added: “[The case] does not depend exclusively on the retrieval of the wreckage. There’s a whole number of calculations that can be made before.

“It’s the Italian Republic’s Prosecutor who will decide on that and all the details of the case have to be weighed up before attempting any kind of conclusion.”

09:41 AM BST

Five bodies found in same cabin.

A fire chief told the press conference: “The yacht tended to the right and obviously the bodies tried to go to the other side and take refuge in their cabins.

“We found five bodies in a cabin on the left and another one in the third cabin on the left. They were in the higher part of the shipwreck.”

Prosecution asked how crew made it to lifeboat

A journalist has asked the prosecution: “How is it that the crew got on the lifeboat and none of the others survived? I just wondered if there was any kind of early reply to that?”

The chief prosecutor replied: “Obviously the inquiry is concentrating on questions such as this. We have tried to find out the maximum information possible from the crew members or the survivors.

“All I would say in response is that the incident happened really, really suddenly - I think the prosecutor just said now the inquiry will begin with the facts of the wreck and that is all I can say at the moment.”

09:33 AM BST

Yacht cook was the first to be retrieved from the wreckage..

Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda said: “We put in to operation our aviation resources but in the course of the day we had to conclude that they were missing, they were not in the sea and the body of the cook was retrieved first.

“And this search and rescue operation continued on the surface and particularly from the air.”

09:29 AM BST

Yacht will be recovered from seabed, says prosecution.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio has said the yacht will be recovered from the seabed.

09:24 AM BST

123 dives taken by coastguard during four-day operation.

Italy’s fire service said 123 dives were undertaken by divers and they could only stay for 12 minutes maximum under the water.

A spokesman said: “It was an intense bout of work as you can imagine and very stressful, nevertheless in four days, the results we achieved do not require any further explanation.

“We managed to bring up all six bodies, we were operating at 50 metres depth and there was very little visibility due to the weather conditions but we achieved our aims.

“My colleagues have shown incredible professionalism.”

09:20 AM BST

Manslaughter investigation opened, say prosecution.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio: “A case has been opened hypothesising the crime of shipwreck and manslaughter but we are only at the initial stage of the inquiries so far, so I am going to confine myself to only giving you that information.

He said the development of that inquiry could be of “any sort imaginable”.

“It was absolutely indispensable to make that press conference given the interest of the world press in those who died,” he added.

The investigation is not yet targeting any individual person.

09:18 AM BST

Sinking of the yacht was a ‘grave tragedy’.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio has recounted how the Bayesian sank in an intense storm on Monday and how the 15 survivors were rescued by another large yacht that was nearby.

He said it was a “grave tragedy” and that in order to “reduce the dimensions of the tragedy” they called on a “big operation of firefighters and firefighting divers who have shown “incredible courage and skill” who carried out a very difficult mission indeed and have allowed us to inspect properly the wreck for bodies”.

09:14 AM BST

Yacht was already sunk by the time coastguard arrived.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said: “There are issues obviously which we cannot comment on at this stage, I think this is a real need which you will all understand in the media.

“The right to information, to free press, often requires what we call squaring of the circle. But I would like to request some understanding, this is not a complication we are seeking ourselves.

“So on the 19th of August at 4 o’clock in the morning the coastguards were alerted to the disaster.

“The coastguards arrived on the spot immediately but the yacht was already sunk.”

09:11 AM BST

There has been silence around this disaster, says prosecutor.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said: “There has been silence around this disaster and we believe it is necessary therefore to publicise the fact that according to Article 5 of the Constitution of 2006 it is not possible to make comments on behalf of the prosecutor of Italy before inquiries have been made properly.

“I have personally criticised this law in the interest of public debate because it seems to me that there is a legitimate interest here and it seems to me that this law creates a lot of obstacles in terms of informing people.”

09:02 AM BST

What’s coming up.

We’re expecting to hear from three people this morning.

They are chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano and Italian Coast Guard officer Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda.

08:42 AM BST

Italian prosecutors expected to speak from 9am.

There’s tight security at the court complex in the town of Termini Imerese where the prosecutors will hold their first press conference.

Guarding the entrance are police, paramilitary Carabinieri and a handful of soldiers.

Journalists are queuing to have their bags checked at a metal detector at the front of the building.

Bodies of Autonomy founder Mike Lynch and his daughter recovered from sunken Bayesian yacht

Mike Lynch, the U.K. investor and founder of IT company Autonomy, has been identified as one of two bodies recovered from the Bayesian, the yacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily early Monday, according to several reports coming out of the country that cite the chief of Civil Protection, Salvo Cocina. The boat, registered to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, quickly capsized in the early hours of Monday after it was struck by a tornado-like water column. Before entrepreneur and investor Mike Lynch died along with six others after the yacht they were on capsized in a storm last week, the party was celebrating Lynch's victory in the U.S. criminal courts. HP (now known as HPE) was still trying to recover $4 billion from him as a result of a civil case Lynch lost in the U.K. Now HPE faces the question: Does it forge ahead, even with Lynch deceased?

Manslaughter Probe Launched After Tragic Sinking of Bayesian Yacht

By Donato Paolo Mancini (Bloomberg) The victims of the Bayesian’s sinking were likely either asleep or tried to escape to no avail as Mike Lynch’s yacht went down in minutes during bad weather, prosecutors in Sicily said as they announced a probe for manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

The dynamic of what happened to those killed isn’t fully clear, deputy prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano told reporters on Saturday. Autopsies are due to take place soon.

“Their position could lead us to think that they tried to escape, but this isn’t demonstrable in a preliminary phase,” he said of the bodies, found inside the ship, on the side closest to the surface. “The bodies might also have been grouped there, floating.”

“The passengers likely weren’t awake,” when the storm struck in the early hours of the morning, he added.

There are currently no suspects, he said at a press conference in Termini Imerese, with the probe being conducted against “persons unknown.”

Cartosio, who said prosecutors aren’t ruling anything out, expressed sympathy for the families of the seven victims, saying it would be “even more painful” if the probe showed the wreck was caused by not following procedures properly.

The wreck’s survivors – including the ship’s captain, crew and passengers – weren’t tested for alcohol or drugs, Cammarano said, adding that first aid was the priority, including tending to some “serious” wounds among survivors “in a state of shock.”

Prosecutors had kept quiet in recent days about the developing probe, with Cartosio explaining on Saturday that communications on the matter were strictly regulated by Italian law, despite significant interest domestically and internationally in the death of Lynch, the 59-year-old British tech tycoon, and six others.

Coast guard admiral Raffaele Macauda said the owners of the ship had announced their intention to retrieve the relic from the seabed, and that the costs would come at their expense. It wasn’t clear when this would happen, he said. But Cartosio said it was a fundamental step in the investigation.

The prosecutor said the emergency began at 4:38 a.m. local time, when a red flare was launched and seen by the coast guard.

Divers from the local firefighter corps spent most of the week attempting to retrieve six bodies stuck inside the ship, which sank to a depth of about 50 meters (164 feet) about a half mile off the coast of Porticello. The body of a seventh victim, the yacht’s chef, had been retrieved earlier.

Cammarano said the probe had so far focused on those who’d been rescued alive. It wasn’t clear whether the ship had the equivalent of a black box, he said, with access made significantly more difficult by the position of the sunken relic. He added a crew member had been on duty, as required by procedure, when the “truly sudden” storm, or “more likely a downburst,” struck the luxury vessel.

Speculation has surrounded the incident, with the chief executive officer of the company that made the yacht, Italian Sea Group, positing that human error was involved. It was clear the ship had taken on water and that its electrics failed, Giovanni Costantino  told Bloomberg News in an interview .

UK authorities are also probing the incident.

AIS data, a tracking system used by ships, shows the Bayesian started to drift from anchor just before 4 a.m., traveling for about five minutes for about 360 meters to the spot where it eventually sank about 15 minutes later, Costantino said.

The coast guard on Saturday said there were no bans on being at anchor where the Bayesian was situated. Prosecutors declined to say whether any of the hatches were open, which could allow the yacht to quickly take on water, saying this would prejudge the probe.

Cammarano added that James Cutfield, the New Zealand captain of the Bayesian, had been “very collaborative” in answering prosecutors’ questions. Cartosio said it was “likely” he would have to answer more questions.

The 56-meter long Bayesian had been carrying 22 passengers and crew, of whom 15 were rescued, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares.

Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra, from the firefighting unit, told reporters that the first five bodies were retrieved from a cabin on the left-hand side of the ship, closest to the water.

The final body – that of Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah, was retrieved on Friday in the third cabin on the left-hand side, “all on the high side of the ship, toward the surface” of the sea, he said.

Lynch and his family had been celebrating his recent acquittal from fraud charges with a small group of advisers when the violent storm struck. The charges stemmed from Lynch’s sale of his software firm Autonomy Corp. to Hewlett Packard Co. in 2011. The Silicon Valley giant went on to accuse Lynch of accounting failures. He’d spent years working to clear his name in court and restore his reputation as one of Europe’s most successful entrepreneurs.
