SAILING YACHT A – World’s Biggest Sailing Yacht – $600 Million

SAILING YACHT A measures 143 meters making her the world’s biggest sailing yacht.

SAILING YACHT A is far more than a luxury vessel. She is a masterpiece of design and innovation combining sleek metal surfaces with futuristic naval architecture that took over two years to complete.

Launched in 2017, both the interior and exterior of this mega sailing yacht were designed by Phillippe Starck, who calls SAILING YACHT A one of his most high-profile projects.

The superyacht has taken on voyages all around the world and was most recently spotted sailing off the coasts of Gibraltar and Cyprus.

SAILING YACHT A interior

Both the interior and exterior of SAILING YACHT A were designed by Philippe Starck , a French architect known for his wide range of design projects.

He famously worked on the impressive MOTOR YACHT A, and the two iconic vessels share a lot of similarities in their layout and specifications.

Both yachts look incredibly futuristic and are sure to attract attention wherever they go.

While no exact details are known about the interior of SAILING YACHT A, it is rumored that she has an underwater observation pod with 30 cm (1 ft) thick glass located in the keel of the vessel.

This is one of the few parts where design mockups are publicly available, and the style of the interior can be examined.

The observation pod appears to have cream upholstery that stretches across the floor and ceiling of the cabin.

Two large symmetrical glass windows allow guests to view the breathtaking underwater world without even having to leave the yacht.

A third window is located at the bottom of the pod, which lets it feel like a true 360-degree experience and is almost comparable to a submarine.

A small floating side table provides guests with a space to place drinks or snacks in the pod and enjoy a one-of-a-kind dining experience in this unusual location.

Since the pod is located at the keel of the yacht, the large propellers are most likely visible from the windows suggesting it is most commonly used at anchor.

The superyacht has ten cabins that can accommodate 20 guests as well as a further 54 crew member.

Paparazzi photos and the work of yacht spotters provide a rare glimpse into the interior of SAILING YACHT A.

No official footage of cabins or salons has been released, although Starck’s past work suggests that the yacht would be furnished with opulent elements that perfectly combine luxury with style.

Silver and metal decorations play a large role and tie the interior design of the yacht together.

However, SAILING YACHT A was launched much later than her motorized companion suggesting her interior might be more modern with minimalistic elements rather than lavish furnishings.

Occasional photographs shot through open doors, and portholes show expensive art pieces decorating the interior of the yacht and rather absurd design choices like a set of chairs shaped like large human heads.

The yacht appears to feature a large, open salon with an elevated seating area and symmetrical arches on either side.

While details aren’t known to the public, it is rumored that SAILING YACHT A features a luxurious spa area, a sizable gym as well as an owner’s suite with several rooms that is only accessible via fingerprint.

The massive private area is said to feature a 60-inch television that disappears into the floor as well as a rotating bed.

Considering she is the largest sailing yacht in the world, it is surprising that SAILING YACHT A can only host 20 guests.

This suggests that there are spacious entertainment areas located on board, including several saloons and ample below-deck space for crew members.

Due to her large size and a small number of cabins, it is assumed that SAILING YACHT A can welcome a large number of day guests onboard for special events and celebrations.

Biggest sailing yacht controversy

It has been the topic of debate that SAILING YACHT A is not the largest yacht in the world but instead the ‘largest sail-assisted motor yacht.

Depending on the definition used, that would make BLACK PEARL the biggest sailing yacht in the world.

The most expensive sailing yacht

SAILING YACHT A is the most expensive sailing yacht in the world and cost an estimated price of US $600 million – a relatively “affordable” price considering her large size and tonnage.

A calculated US $48,000 per ton is considered low in the yachting industry, where European yachts are usually priced at US $60,000 per ton and over.

This average price would bring the value of SAILING YACHT A up to nearly US $800 million. However, due to the fact that the official sales price has not been released to the public, these numbers are mere estimates and cannot be validated officially.

Since the yacht is a custom project and one of a kind, it can be assumed that the total value of SAILING YACHT A lies far higher than her initial price.

In addition to any cost for the crew, supplies, and docking fees, she has annual running costs of US $50-75 million.

SAILING YACHT A is currently not available for sale or charter.

Specifications

SAILING YACHT A is incredibly large for a sailing yacht, and even compared to the longest motor yachts in the world, she would rank in the top ten.

Paired with her unusual futuristic design, this mega sailing yacht has a length of 143 meters (469 ft), a beam of 25 meters (82 ft), and a draft of 8 meters (26 ft) making her a more than an impressive vessel.

SAILING YACHT A was built by Nobiskrug , a German superyacht builder at their Kiel shipyard, and launched in 2017 after more than two years of construction.

To date, SAILING YACHT A is the largest yacht ever built by Nobiskrug and remains their flagship.

It is considered the most complicated project to ever be completed in the sailing industry and gained international media attention on its launch date. It has a total volume of 12.558 tons and is powered by hybrid diesel-electric engines.

SAILING YACHT A is considered the longest sailing yacht in the world and is more than 36 meters (118 ft) longer than BLACK PEARL, which ranks in second place on the list.

Coincidentally her project name was WHITE PEARL which is a reference to her brilliant white exterior, although it couldn’t have referred to BLACK PEARL since she was only launched in 2018, a year after Melnichenko’s masterpiece.

Her three-carbon masts stand at an impressive 100 meters (328 ft), making them some of the largest in the world and taller than Big Ben in London.

However, her large size is sometimes also limiting as she struggles to fit underneath most bridges and is therefore constrained to certain routes.

She once passed under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with only 20 feet to spare between her masts and the bottom of the famous bridge.

She is rumored to have an electric gimbal crow’s nest, which allows for remote operation and advanced wind measurements. Her sails are all white, and her masts have nearly sickle-like shapes, which add to her striking futuristic appearance.

It is noteworthy that she is commonly photographed with her sails down, which suggests she might be using her support engines more frequently than true wind power.

With a sail area of more than 3.700m^2 (40.000 square ft), she can reach top speeds of up to 21 knots which is supported by her twin 4895 Horsepower MTU engines .

Her average cruise speed lies at 16 knots, and her total range is estimated to lie at 5320 nautical miles. She features a state-of-the-art sail system that is able to raise and lower the sails and anchors at the touch of a button.

SAILING YACHT A has a steel hull and composite steel superstructure, which is unusual in the superyacht industry as most shipyards choose aluminum to reduce weight and keep the vessel light.

She currently sails under the flag of Bermuda, which is common for prominent sailing yachts.

sailing yacht a tender 2

During construction, SAILING YACHT A was called project WHITE PEARL, a fitting name for this sizable vessel.

Like her interior, the exterior of SAILING YACHT A was designed by Philippe Starck, although the Dutch studio Dykstra Naval Architects played a role in the naval architecture of the vessel.

They specialize in sailing yachts of all sizes and have been involved in many prominent projects in the industry over the years.

She features eight teak decks with a large swimming pool located in the center and several elevators spread across the yacht.

She is even said to carry a submarine. The main pool is lowered into the deck allowing for additional privacy for the owners.

Her hull has 24 shell doors, which are used to access equipment and provide additional deck space if needed. She is accompanied by four tenders also designed by Philippe Starck and built by Lloyd Stevenson in New Zealand.

Their sleek and elegant design matches that of the main vessel, and they are used for transporting guests and taking them on excursions.

One of the tenders of SAILING YACHT A is a carbon fiber speedboat especially reserved for the owner who can operate the vessel autonomously whenever required without the aid of crew members.

This allows Melnichenko, who is a fan of driving high-speed cars to be independent when staying aboard his luxury yacht. The tender is small but powerful, reaching speeds of up to 53 knots.

The larger tenders can seat up to eight passengers and feature panoramic windows ideal for sightseeing and exploring but are much slower at only 30 knots.

The aft features a large garage used for storing jet skis, tenders, and other equipment.

High-profile artists such as Snoop Dogg are rumored to have performed here, although detailed evidence of such concerts remains unknown.

Whenever the aft isn’t used for performances or parties, it can be transformed into a swimming platform designed in the yacht’s iconic futuristic style.

However, despite her cutting-edge design features, SAILING YACHT A surprisingly also includes classic nautical elements. She has a wooden steering wheel that is reminiscent of a pirate ship, although it is not operational.

The captain of the vessel can instead use modern technologies to operate the massive yacht via a small joystick and touchscreen.

There are symmetric extendable balconies that protrude from the bridge of the yacht and allow the crew to have a better view to be able to gauge the dimensions of the immense vessel.

Of course, SAILING YACHT A has a modern underwater lighting system that illuminates the vessel perfectly at night.

Determining Condition And Value

No one wants to overpay for a boat, so how can you get a good idea of its worth.

Boat inspection

Be an educated consumer and have a surveyor look over any boat you’re considering purchasing — new or used.

For popular production boats, there are a few places that can help. Websites like NADAguides and BUCValu list values of hundreds of models.

Keep in mind that estimates from any service presume clean boats typically and appropriately equipped with everything in proper working order. For boats with limited resale activity, reliable valuations can't be developed until a model and year's production has been circulating for at least three years. And remember that no one can give you an accurate value of a boat sight unseen; that requires the knowledge of an experienced marine surveyor, who spends some hands-on time on the boat. Less popular and custom boats will also need to have a qualified marine surveyor appraise them. For boats that don't require a survey, online websites can help give you a sense of the value. And don't assume asking price — there's usually room for negotiation.

Determining Condition

If you're buying a jon boat or canoe, a visual inspection is probably enough to determine the overall condition of the boat, but few of us are expert enough to know about all the systems in a larger boat. Fortunately, there are professionals called "marine surveyors" who are experts. If you're going to spend a few thousand dollars or more on a boat, you need to hire one; it could be the most important buying decision you'll make.

A marine survey, which can be a couple of dozen pages long, is a snapshot of the condition and valuation of a boat on a specific day. Think of it this way: Buyers and sellers can speak for themselves, but an independent marine survey speaks for the boat. Because of its depth of information, it has several uses: It's designed to give a potential buyer a clear picture of the condition of the boat with respect to U.S. Coast Guard regulations and nationally recognized standards, to provide a fair market value for the boat, and to document any potentially dangerous deficiencies in the boat's systems.

Download the BoatUS Buyers Guide PDF to read this article and the entire guide.

A marine survey is also a useful tool for buyers when negotiating price based on what repairs or upgrades the boat needs. And finally, insurance and lending companies that need to know the true condition and fair market value of a vessel often require it. Insurance underwriters carefully read through a marine survey to determine whether the vessel is a good risk, and they may require an owner to address certain deficiencies.

Get The Right Surveyor

Marine surveyor

You wouldn't hire a plumber to rewire your house; the same goes for surveyors. Finding a qualified marine surveyor or a specialist is a matter of knowing where to look.

Marine surveyors are not regulated or licensed, so virtually anyone can call him- or herself a surveyor, and many unqualified people do. A good indicator of competence is a surveyor who has professional affiliations with the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC), plus either the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) or the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS).

Choose a surveyor who is familiar with the type of boat you're interested in. Some specialize in power, some in sail, others in wooden or metal boats. Never hire a marine surveyor referred to you by the seller or broker! A surveyor should have absolutely no affiliation with boat brokers, dealers, boat-repair shops, or others whose living depends on the sale or repair of boats — especially the one you're about to buy.

There are three main types of surveys done on a boat you're considering buying, and each requires special training to do them well. Sometimes one surveyor can do everything, but sometimes you may have to hire more than one.

Get The Right Survey

A condition and valuation survey (C&V) covers the hull and structures as well as the boat's systems. This type of thorough survey is usually required for insurance and financing; it's sometimes referred to as a "prepurchase survey." Whether your insurance company or lender requires it or not, BoatUS recommends always getting one before buying.

A proper C&V survey requires the boat to be hauled so the hull and underwater gear can be inspected. Good surveyors inspect a boat top to bottom, fore and aft. They'll look at the hull and deck and determine by sounding with a hammer and moisture meter whether there are voids or delamination, and they can identify places in the core that may eventually rot and become soft (and expensive to repair) before they're detectable by a buyer. A surveyor checks the condition of AC and DC electrical systems, plumbing and thru-hull fittings, deck hardware, propane and fuel systems, steering and controls, and safety equipment.

A proper marine survey will be an in-depth written report that evaluates the boat according to U.S. Coast Guard regulations as well as ABYC and National Fire Protection Association standards. A knowledgeable surveyor will also know if a specific make has a history of major problems. Don't rely on a survey prepared for a previous owner, even if it was done recently. A boat could have suffered damage since the last survey.

Engine surveys cover the operation and condition of propulsion and generator engines. Typically they include inspection of controls, electrical, cooling, and exhaust systems, as well as engine mounts. Compression, engine, and exhaust temperatures are also checked, and engine surveys typically include tests of oil samples, too.

But how do you know if you need one? Alison Mazon, a surveyor in Portland, Oregon, is one of a handful of hull surveyors who also does engine surveys. "An engine survey is warranted for particularly expensive or complex engines, and those with obvious lack of maintenance," says Mazon. "Many larger engines built since about 2006 have computers that can be read by trained personnel with the right equipment. A quick scan for computer faults may be a sign a more detailed analysis is needed."

A rigging survey looks at the condition of a sailboat's mast and boom and associated rigging. Inspections are made of attachment points, welds, standing and running rigging, and the mast step. Rigging surveyors either go up the mast or inspect the rig when it's off the boat. Whether a rigging survey is needed depends on the age, prior use of the rig, and its intended purpose.

Red flags that would signal the need for a rigging survey include a rig more than 10 years old, frayed stays, cracked swages, weeping chainplates, and turnbuckles that are bottomed out. The rig also needs to be surveyed if the boat will be used offshore or heavily raced.

Here's what a good survey provides:

  • The condition of the boat and its equipment. A marine survey determines the condition of the boat's visible components and accessible structures at the time of the inspection. A survey provides a list of deficiencies as well as needed repairs and focuses on safety. Deficiencies in a survey can be used to renegotiate the sales price or scrap the deal altogether if needed repairs are too expensive or complicated.
  • The value of the boat. Surveyors use pricing guides along with their vast experience in valuing boats. A seller or broker may think a boat has a specific worth, but until a survey is performed, those figures are only guesses. Banks and insurance companies use the survey value to determine loan and insurance hull value amounts. This is also a great tool for price negotiations and can easily pay for the cost of the survey.
  • A budget for repairs and maintenance. Nearly any boat will have some defects and deficiencies. Knowing what they are beforehand makes it easier to know how much to budget for the future. Surveys typically provide a prioritized list of recommended repairs. The most important ones are critical to safety, and usually your insurance company will require them to be completed. The rest are things that can be done as you find time and money.

Marine inspector

Just about every boat will have some issues, but a good survey will help you create a budget for repairs and maintenance before you make the purchase.

Survey Recommendations

Recommendations are just that — issues the surveyor found on the boat that may need to be addressed. It's the "may" part that's important here. Typically, a surveyor will list recommendations in order of importance, often as A, B, or C.

A-List Examples

A-list recommendations (more properly called "must-dos") are the most important ones. You can be sure your insurance company will require them — not just for your boat, but for the safety of you and your crew. These are issues that, unaddressed, can cause your boat to sink, burn, become involved in an accident, or cause serious injury. Even if you're not financing or insuring a boat, these recommendations need to be addressed before the boat is used:

  • Worn or damaged below-waterline hoses, seacocks, and thru-hull fittings that pose a sinking hazard
  • AC or DC wiring deficiencies that could cause a fire
  • Lack of or nonfunctioning Coast Guard-required equipment, such as fire extinguishers, flares, or navigation lights
  • Propane system deficiencies that could cause an explosion
  • A vessel with too much horsepower that could make it unstable
  • Lack of operable carbon-monoxide alarms
  • Unsecured batteries or fuel tanks that could break loose and damage the hull, or cause a fire
  • Missing oil-spill and waste-management placards. These are required by law and will be checked during a Coast Guard inspection

B-List Recommendations

These tend to include either (1) items that are not an immediate risk but will pose an unacceptable hazard if left uncorrected for too long or (2) things that may enhance the safety, value, and enjoyment of your boat. Some of these may cross over into A-list recommendations as far as underwriters are concerned and may also need to be addressed before your boat can be insured. For the most part, they're things you'll want to do, anyway. Here are some examples:

  • Hoses and wires that are chafing or not installed to ABYC standards
  • Worn cutless or rudder bearings
  • Stiff or corroded steering or control cables
  • Engine maintenance needed to forestall a larger problem
  • Cleats or stanchions that need to be rebedded to prevent deck-core rot
  • Heavy corrosion on fuel or water tanks

C-List Recommendations

The C-list generally includes normal upkeep items that should be addressed as you can.

Examples include:

  • water leaks through ports or hatches,
  • anodes in need of replacement,
  • loose or worn engine belts, hoses, and engine mounts,
  • cosmetic issues, and
  • winches in need of service.

Keep in mind that while surveyors inspect a boat with an eye toward industry safety standards, such as those written by ABYC, they recognize that newer standards were not in place when older boats were built. But some of those standards, like the need for carbon-monoxide alarms or proper wiring, are critical enough that insurance underwriters may still require boats to comply with them.

All of the recommendations can be used as negotiation points for buyers. Any purchase contract should specify that a sale may be voided if the survey results are unacceptable to the buyer. In some cases, a seller may choose to do the required repairs before a sale, but make sure the boat is reinspected before the sale is finalized. Typically, surveyors will reinspect specific items for a fee once the sale is made and sign off that they have been properly done.

If, after the sale, the buyer chooses to make the repairs him- or herself, insurance coverage can begin immediately while the repairs are in progress. But either way, the insurance company will usually require proof — a written statement from the owner or yard bills — to confirm the recommendations have been completed correctly.

Attend The Survey Inspection

A good surveyor welcomes prospective buyers to be present at the survey. There's no better way to learn about your new boat than watching a professional methodically dig through it. The surveyor's notes will be more meaningful if he's able to discuss with you what he's examining. He'll also answer questions that might not be significant enough to be included in the written report, and can tell you about problems he's seen on similar boats that you can watch out for.

What is my Boat Worth? Top 10 Boat Value tools & Pricing Guides

Best Boat Value Estimator Tools – Find Your Boat’s Worth or Trade-In Value

Do you know the value of your boat ? Are you selling your boat and need to know how much to offer it for? Or looking to buy a vessel and want a fair market value estimate ? You surely don’t want to over pay or leave money on the table and in fact, there are a few good boat value calculator tools out there but they rely on much of the same data behind the scenes. It is important to do your due diligence and research a boat’s price to know its worth. Here we list the top 10 boat value calculators and explain what things affect a boat’s worth.

Let’s dive into how much should I sell my boat for:

What Is My Boat Worth? #BoatValue

sailing yacht a value

According to your motivations for selling a boat or trading it in for a newer model you always want to get the best market value and price possible. This entails determining the market value of the boat or yacht and negotiations with the buyer/seller.

There are online resources that can help but can also be misleading. These boat value calculators can give estimated pricing to know the boat’s worth but if your boat is a rare model or has custom upgrades then you cannot really used them. When getting your boat’s price evaluated, there are four main areas that need to be considered:

  • Cosmetic (the look and feel, design, of the boat)
  • Mechanical (engine quality, engine hours and structural integrity)
  • Build (size, age and model)
  • The boat’s equipment
  • The boat’s history

Other important considerations include the manufacture, model, and age for the vessel. Before we get started, let’s take a deeper look at how to determine the value of your boat.

What determines the value of a boat?

Before you sell your boat, you’ll need to figure out how much money it is worth . Instead, it refers to money you might reasonably expect someone to pay in your local marketplace.

Those final three words are critical. Boats might be worth more or less depending on the supply and demand in a particular area. For example, if a vessel has a deep draught, it will be more valuable in a place with more deep water and more locations to take it.

Still, it can be beneficial to consult the National Automobile Dealers Association Marine Appraisal Guide (NADA), the American Boat and Yacht Council ( ABOS ) Marine Blue Book, and the Bureau of Ships (BOS) recommendations. Nonetheless, they can provide you with a decent ballpark estimate of the approximate value of your boat.

Check local postings for boats of a similar kind and age to better understand what you may expect in your region. This can inform you of what similar boats are selling for in your area, allowing you to make a more accurate estimate of your boat’s value.

Undoubtedly, every boat has its narrative to tell, and many have undergone some aftermarket alteration. A dealer or mechanic can provide you with an accurate estimate of the boat’s value, depending on the specific characteristics of boat. However, be cautious when relying on dealership estimations. A lowball offer is more likely to be extended if the seller believes you are looking to trade in your vehicle.

It should also be noted that boats lose value over time.

Boat Type and Age:

The type of boat you have is crucial in determining its market value because a larger deck or powerful engine can make a difference. The amenities included in the boat will fetch a higher price. For their part, smaller boats and sailboats are worth less so they will have lower resale value when they are used.

The other significant aspect that influences the value of a boat is its age. As previously said, boats depreciate over time in the same way that automobiles do. A 15-year-old boat isn’t worth much unless it has some collector’s value attached to it, regardless of how valuable it was when it was new.

The brand is probably more important than it should be in this decision. Boats from well-known manufacturers that everyone has heard of (like Bayliner and Crestliner), sell better.

Towing equipment and water slides retain their value on the second hard market while electronics depreciate quickly.

How to Determine What the Condition of the Boat is?

Understandably, the condition of a boat impacts the valuation. Consider the following scenario: your boat’s hull has been punctured and needs to be repaired. If this is the case, it has the potential to depreciate a boat’s worth by a large proportion, regardless of any other positive characteristics it may possess.

The mechanics are as follows: Engine hours and the physical condition of the hull and deck are among the factors to consider. Are the “bones” of the boat in decent shape, to put it another way? Is the engine in proper condition considering its age? If this is the case, the boat will be worth more money. On the other hand, if the boat has been driven extensively and has required numerous repairs, its value will be significantly reduced.

The cosmetics are as follows: All of the “non-essential” features of the boat are included in this category. Is the paint in good condition? How well does the trim appear to be in condition? Is the metalwork gleaming, or has it become corroded? These considerations come into play when buyers determine how much they are willing to spend for a piece of property.

  • Is the rigging in good condition?
  • Is the mast and boom in good condition?
  • Are the sails in reasonable condition?
  • All of the pulleys and lines appear to be operating smoothly and quietly?

These are merely questions that apply to sailboats in general.

If your boat has been exposed to seawater, you will have to be concerned about the paint and corrosion on the boat. So, boats used in saltwater deteriorate faster.

A boat’s history affects its value

You want to make sure to check the boat-alert.com hull ID history report to know if the vessel was in an accident or has any negative events in its history.

How long do boats last? Do boats have good resale value? Or hold their value well?

Since boats are not used a lot during the year, they hold their resale value very well relative to cars. On average you can expect boats to last around  10 to 25 years . Some large ships last 100 years depending on maintenance and materials used in construction. Fiberglass is currently the most common material used to make recreational boats and other watercraft so they can last 50 years . An aluminum boat can last a lifetime . We will cover this in more detail in another article.

How many engine hours on a boat is too much?

If you are buying a used watercraft and do not know what boat engine hours are too much then listen up. “Engine boat hours” are important but have some downfalls when used as a metric to judge a boat. It is an indication of how much it has been used. and the rule of thumb is that 100 boat engine hours is like 4000km on a vehicle . You can use this to know what is too much and too little.

Sometimes the boat hours (like an odometer) is not available depending on where and how it gets recorded for a given boat and motor. We also should note that not all hours are the same. Just like a car with 100k could be better than another one with the same odometer depending on how they used it and maintained it.

Ultra- low boat engine hours are not always a good thing. For example, 2000 engine hours is the life expectancy of the boat engine . So, if it is too low compared to the age of the boat then maybe they did not use it enough or it sat in storage for years.

A very high boat engine hours depends on the region but usually it is not a good sign but it could mean the boat got lots of love and enjoyment. You have to also look at the average boating season.

It can be up to 30 hours per season. You will have to divide the hours by the average to see if it makes sense in terms of boat age by years. Boats in southern and norther climates could still be the same per year even though boating season might be shorter/condensed in northern climates. Ask your dealer for the maintenance schedule based on number of hours. All of this affects the boats value.

Do boats depreciate faster than cars? and How much does a boat depreciate each year?

It really depends on the market and type of boat/car so it is not a fair comparison to make. Generally, a slightly used boat and a used car are better value for your money than a new one due to depreciation. Some people assume boats are luxury items so they lose value faster than cars that are really needed to get around. Having said that boats won’t depreciate faster than cars because they are used a lot less! Normal wear and tear on a boat should be less than a vehicle but that depends on how it is used and maintained. In terms of market is more demand and less supply of boats so they will not depreciate as quickly. Once a boat leaves the lot or showroom, it will depreciate 20 percent per year.

What increases the value of a boat?

Good cosmetics and visual appeal always enhance value or at the very least draw the attention of a prospective buyer to the boat. A vessel that has been cleaned, waxed, and coated demonstrates that it has been well cared for, increasing its perceived worth. There are simple upgrades and additions like custom handrails and solar panels that increase a boats value.

A well-documented history , as well as maintenance records, are incredibly beneficial. Suppose a vessel has received regular upkeep and maintenance, including thorough winterization and frequent oil changes. In that case, the boat will sell for a premium price, maybe 10 percent to 20 percent more than the advertised average price, depending on the market—a complete and unblemished Boat-Alert History Report.

When you go to a boat dealership, their answer to a request for dealership estimates will be it depends on the boat type. Boat selling needs to consider the profile of the vessel. Is it an investment? what kind of hardware is included? what lifestyle does it afford?

There are many things you can leverage to get a higher percentage of the original MSRP. The popularity of the brand and any restoration affects the reality of your situation. This has to be taken into account when using valuation tool for boats.

Some strategies are available to help you raise the value of your boat, including:

  • Upgrading Electronics
  • Regular service/maintenance of boat engine
  • Upgrading Interior
  • Upgrading Exterior
  • Replacing Worn Items
  • Add New Features

What Are the Issues That Can Lower A Boat’s Price?

When it comes to valuing a used boat, it’s essential to understand what factors are essential and which ones aren’t. A boat survey is also known for including a sea trial. Use it to fix issues before listing the boat for sale.

Damaged internal fuel tanks (which will necessitate the removal and replacement of failing fuel tanks) and a saturated foam core are only a couple of hidden difficulties with a boat (from water intrusion). The buyer’s responsibility will be more minor issues, such as out-of-date electronics, faded canvas, and general cosmetics. If the seller receives a lowball offer, they will not be encouraged to make many concessions. Negotiations will proceed more smoothly if all parties recognize the significance of each issue.

What are The Common Mistakes When Pricing a Boat?

Before you make your boat purchase, you should know a few things about boat purchasing and some typical blunders you should avoid, which is a significant financial commitment that you should not undertake without seeking professional guidance.

Be Patient: Most boating enthusiasts will tell you that the capacity to be patient is the most crucial factor in completing a successful purchase of their vessel. The excitement and joy of becoming a boat owner may often overshadow simple decisions, so many first-time boat purchasers make these mistakes.

For example, somebody new to boating should consider purchasing a used model rather than investing thousands of dollars in a brand new boat. It is also not advisable to buy on the spur of the moment, which many people do when attending a boat exhibition.

Even while boat sales associates may encourage you to buy your first boat at a boat show, doing so is not the best choice. Instead, exercise patience before making a purchase and allow yourself plenty of time to shop around and consider your options.

Do Proper Research: Even if it is a tiny one, purchasing a boat may be a significant financial commitment. You don’t want to rush into anything without first finishing your studies. Doing the research will help you set your budgets and expectations right.

Keep in mind that there are other expenditures associated with owning a vehicle, such as storage, maintenance, and insurance. Talking to other boat owners about their purchasing and ownership experiences should also be part of your research. Know the different ship models and their features.

Be smart: Some people believe that more is better and wind up getting a boat with far more power than required. Others purchase the boat without considering whether or not they will need a motor with sufficient power to perform the activities they desire, such as skiing, tubing, or wakeboarding.

Where to look up boat values? Well Known Guides & Calculators

For a full list and review article comparing the best 10 tools for boat valuation see our other article here.

Remember how the Kelly Blue Book is used for valuing cars? Well, the boat pricing guides are out there and offered by these companies among others: NADA Marine Appraisal Guide, BoatWizard’s SoldBoats database, and the ABOS Marine Blue Book.

Each of them uses a different method of calculating boat values and estimates. As your broker if they can use all three sources including the SoldBoats database and YachtBroker data. There might still be a BoatUS Value Check program but we could not find it.

What is the equivalent of Kelley Blue Book for boats?

Since there are no Kelley Blue Book® Values for boats that KBB offers you will have to look for other tools. Note however, that KBB does have values for personal watercraft ( PWC like JetSki) among other vehicles but not boats. Some websites will use the words “Boat Blue Book Value” or “KBB Boat Book” to get search engine rankings but they are not genuine Kelley Blue Book boat values. Edmunds does not offer any boat value calculator but you can search Ebay and Craigslist for similar boats as part of your research. You definitely want to check the top 10 boat calculators list first.

Agreed Hull Value & Actual Cash Value Coverage

One way to find a boat value is to look at the insurance papers. The replacement value could be listed or at least you should understand this topic. You’ll always know what your claims payout by when you get the agreed hull value in your coverage. It pays to replace or repair your boat up to its agreed hull value . This is something that is determined when you start your policy and it will cover your boat, engines, and boating equipment.

For the boater who took less coverage with the “ Actual Cash Value ” policy, they will have a lower annual insurance premium. This basic coverage is just for the boat, engine and boating equipment. Whenever there is a total loss, your claims payout is determined using the current market value of your boat (Some losses may be subject to depreciation). To read more on boat insurance coverages see BoatUS .

Types of tools and services to search boat values

  • boat price checker
  • boat trade-in value
  • boat valuation
  • boat value calculator
  • boat value estimator

These tools will either compare to other boats on the market or will use their own database of values to get the pricing of a boat. Some tools would use some math to determine depreciation from the original new boat price based on number of years and hours used. boat values are usually based only on brokers or boat dealers. These sources don’t take into account the significant number of boat sales between private parties. This boat price checker from BoatTrader will show you the listed prices for boats for each boat so you can compare the listing prices for your vessel model and year.

How to Find Your Boat’s Trade-In Value

To find a Boat’s Trade-in value, you must go to a dealer. There are companies that buy boats such as “ we buy boats cash ” companies. Visit Westshore Marine and We Buy Boats to get cash offers. There is also Off The Hook Yachts .

Trade-in values for boats are not as good as private sales and can vary. You are essentially calculating how much you anticipate your boat to sell for, but take out the dealer’s costs/margins. This knowledge will come in helpful when it’s time to haggle with your dealer over the price of your new or used boat.

The location of your yacht has a significant impact on its market value.

The fundamentals of boat valuation and trading include:

  • Investigate the market value of your yacht using the internet. Check out the NADA, BOS, and ABOS standards. Different types of boats have their own “blue book.”
  • Look for a reputable merchant to do business.
  • Get an idea of how much your boat is selling for by looking at local and online ads.
  • Before handing over your old boat to the dealer, make sure you have agreed on a price.
  • Tools for Marine Dealers to Assess Trade-Ins

A Marine Survey can affect boat offers you get when selling a boat

Marine Surveyors are hired to inspect boats similar to a vehicle pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic. They also check engines, gear, accessories, interiors, structural integrity, compliance with legal and safety laws and standards, etc. They may have the boat pulled out of the water to check the hull, or send a diver underneath, or use inspection tools. See our article on how you do a pre-purchase boat survey .

What is a Marine Appraisal?

When buying or selling a used boat, you will need to get an accurate appraisal. This gives you better bargaining power and puts all the cards on the table so you know how much should you sell my boat for. Most boat sales as ‘as is’ so you need this. It will make you aware of small fixes that could greatly increase the value of the boat. Professionally appraised boats also tend to sell faster and fetch a higher price. Learn some techniques to Sell your boat faster and our Best Step by Step guide to selling your Boat .

There are different kinds of surveys. Make sure you get the right one. A condition and valuation survey  ( C&V ) covers the hull and structures as well as the boat’s systems. Your insurance company and bank will need this one too. It is sometimes referred to as a “pre-purchase survey”. You should expect an in-depth written report that evaluates the vessel based on U.S. Coast Guard regulations as well as ABYC and National Fire Protection Association standards.

Other types are “engine surveys” and “rigging surveys”.

Hiring A Surveyor To Appraise A Boat Before Buying

It is wise to hire a specialized boat surveyor and could be required for financing. You may want to hire more than one surveyor – one for the hull and general condition of the boat, one for the rig if it’s a sailboat, and one for the engine survey which should always include an oil sample analysis, especially for a powerboat.

Having said that, to get the value of the boat, you want a condition and valuation survey (C&V) . It covers the hull, deck superstructure and systems. It’s important to remember that this isn’t a licensed profession, so anyone can call themselves a marine surveyor. Be sure any surveyor you hire is familiar with the type of boat in question, that they can provide references, and that they are truly independent. Two great places to find a surveyor are the  Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors  (SAMS) and  National Association of Marine Surveyors  (NAMS). They maintain lists of boat surveyors in your region.

How much should I pay when I buy a boat?

BoatTrader offers a general search tool that is based on a year and length range that you input for a boat make to produce a list of similar boats in your area. This will give you an idea how much others are selling the boat so you know how much to pay for a similar one. View the tool here: Boat Price Checker – Boat Trader .

Fair market value of a used boat – What is a used boat worth?

The value is what someone is prepared to pay you for it. For a boat that costs significant amounts of money, you don’t price it fairly yourself. It is something that surveyors, insurance companies, and banks will get involved in. Never the less, you should do your due diligence to set your expectations in a reasonable range. One amazing trick is to go to an auction to see what the buying public is prepared to pay for similar boats.

State of the Boating Market in 2021-2022

Are boats going down in price.

No, in fact since the start of the pandemic, boats have increased in price. As well, the dollar has lots of boat buying power due to inflation on top of the shortage or boats on dealer lots. Boats have a lot more electronics now so there is a general trend for higher costs.

Are boats increasing or appreciating in value?

Yes, since the pandemic there has been an increase in boat prices. We discussed this in detail in our article: Why U.S. Boat Sales Are Booming .

Are boats more expensive this year? And why are boat prices going up during this shortage?

It’s no secret that boating is becoming more expensive and that the pandemic has caused many shortages in different sectors. Read more here .

Are boats overpriced right now? how much should I sell my boat for

It depends who you ask. The dollar has lost its value too but the boat shortage is compounding the problem. We suggest waiting a bit for the supply to catch up with the demand. Read this article about whether Should You Buy A New Boat Now? by Discover Boating .

Is there a blue book for boat motors?

Yes, there is a blue book for boat motors called the “ABOS Marine Blue Book.” This book is a comprehensive pricing guide that provides information on the value of different types of boat motors. It covers a wide range of boat motor manufacturers, models, and years, providing information on both new and used motors. There is also https://www.outboardbluebook.com/ for Canadian dealers at a fee.

After checking with guides, speaking with brokers, comparing online resources and histories and paying for a C&V survey, the bottom line on boat pricing (whether you’re selling or buying) is how much is the boat worth to you? That may move the price up or down. Use those tools as a guide but consider that it is an emotional sell in the end. If you’re the seller in need of fast cash, you’ll take less. If you’re an emotional buyer with the dream of a wet summer, you’ll pay more.

Use this boat valuation tool to find the market value of a boat you want to sell or purchase: You can access two such valuators on this link at hindecoder.com/boat-value-calculator.php . A website also can’t factor in any upgrades, accessories, or customizations made to the boat.

Average Yacht Prices | 40, 50, 60, 70, 100 feet + Helpful Examples

How much do yachts cost? Let’s look at yacht prices per size.

SELECT SIZE ⇩

Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.

How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.

40 Foot Yacht Cost

A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.

Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.

A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.

The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.

The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.

Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.

Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.

You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.

For  sailboat prices specifically, check out this article .

Our Pick: Viking 42 Convertible: Cruise and Fish (2014)

Price: $895,000

sailing yacht a value

  • Cushioned seats
  • Underwater lights
  • Flybridge fiberglass hard-top
  • Recent engine and service
  • Joystick control
  • Cockpit shade with poles, freezer, and step-up box
  • Custom chairs
  • Coach roof overhang to provide shade
  • home theater setup
  • Freshwater wash area
  • Cockpit freezer and drink box
  • Forward-facing viewing windows in deckhouse

Here’s a great example of a yacht with differing ages and year models. It has twin diesel engines, 600 hp each, and cruise at 35 mph (pretty fast!).

Yacht Price Examples for Three Other 40-50 Foot

  • 42-foot Grand Banks 42 Classic; trawler-cruiser style yacht; twin diesel, 350 hp each, cruising speed is 13 mph. Price: $370,000 for 2004; $124,500 for 1986; older ones for less
  • 45-foot Sea Ray 450 Sundancer or Sedan Bridge; single or twin diesel, about 1,000 hp total; cruising speed about 26 mph Price: $472,000 for 2012 twin-engine
  • 41-foot Back Cove Downeast; single diesel 715 hp; cruising speed is 26 mph Price: $619,000 for 2016

50 Foot Yacht Cost

50-foot yachts are  normally owner-operated, so you wouldn’t need to pay for a crew. Now we are around the size of 2-bedroom yachts.

They can provide more living space giving the owner flexibility for more guests and making it a more permanent residential option. With more space comes the opportunity to install more amenities as well.

The biggest difference between the 40-foot vessel and the 50-foot is the accommodations.

Expect three-cabin layouts, which give plenty of space for rest. The opportunity to create guest rooms, owners’ suite, and entertainment spaces are better with these yachts.

Our Pick: Hatteras GT54 Convertible Sportfish

sailing yacht a value

The price for the 2017 model of this used yacht starts at $2,249,000.

This yacht is 53′ 10″ long and weighs 75,000 pounds! It has twin diesel engines, 1,300 hp each, cruising speed of 35 mph.

It has a 1200-gallon fuel capacity with three staterooms. It sleeps up to 6 people, so it is perfect for entertaining without being so large to the point where maintenance becomes very difficult. It is known for its great propulsion rates and is very smooth and agile.

It specializes as a fishing boat but allows plenty of room for guests. In addition to the three staterooms, it has a large salon deck, a spacious galley, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 50 Foot

  • 51-foot Azimut Magellano 50; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 425 hp each, cruising speed 16 mph Price: $670,760 for 2013
  • 52-foot Carver C52 Command Bridge; twin diesel engines, 600 hp each; cruising speed 18- 26 mph Price: $1,149,000 for 2017; $1,750,00 for 2021 with bow thrusters, gyro-stabilizer

How much is a large yacht? Let’s  step up to 60 foot.

60 Foot Yacht Cost

Now we’re looking at 2-bedroom yacht prices. A yacht in this range approaches the upper end of the owner/operator criteria.

This means that owners need to decide whether they can handle this size yacht on their own or if they need to hire outside help from a crew.

If you’re thinking of buying a boat this size, the cost may not be an issue, but understand that adding crew members adds substantial extra expenses! Crew salaries start at around $3K /mth for junior members and $10K for captains and experienced crew members.

This size is great for longer travels beyond day trips and adds more and more space for extra amenities. Hosting guests becomes easier.

Here are some examples:

Our Pick: Hatteras M60

sailing yacht a value

The average base price for this model is around $2,995,000.

The Hatteras M60 is great for someone who wants the luxury of a larger yacht but still wants to be an owner-operator. The deck’s layout below and above is spacious, with a large salon and a full master suite. It can be customized to order with hardwood floors or specific carpeting and amenities like TVs, a bar, a full kitchen, etc. It is a motor yacht, meant for pleasure cruising.

It has twin diesel engines, 1135 hp each; cruising speed is 28 mph.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 60 Foot

  • 64-foot Schaefer 640; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 625 hp each; cruising speed 25 mph Price: $1,299,000 for 2017
  • 60-foot Sunreef 62 Sailing Catamaran; twin diesel engines 110 hp each; cruising speed 10 mph Price: $990,000 for 2009

70 Foot Yacht Cost

We’re now looking at 3-bedroom yachts. Once you reach this size yacht, it is almost guaranteed you will need a crew to help operate it. A crewed yacht is very different from an owner-operated yacht.

This is just shy of the superyacht category, so if you settle on this size, know you are almost there!

As previously mentioned, as the yacht size gets larger, so do the number of factors that make the purchase more layered and complex.

When yachts reach this size, the interior layout begins to change more drastically. They often have a spacious main deck perfect for dining and entertaining guests, whereas below, the yacht would likely have four or more cabins and crew quarters.

With more rooms comes more cost and more opportunity to customize the space to make it your own.

Here are some great options for this size:

Our Pick: Hatteras GT70 Convertible Sportfish

sailing yacht a value

The 2017 GT70 model runs around $4,500,000, but keep in mind the extra costs of maintenance, furnishing, and a cabin crew to help it run. It’s great for a long vacation and far-away destinations.

The GT70 convertible sportfish is known for its speed and agility, and high propulsion power. It has twin diesel engines, 1900 hp each; cruising speed over 30 mph.

It is 70′ 6″ with 2,140-gallon fuel capacity. The inside is lavish, with a galley, a huge salon, and five staterooms.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 70 Foot

  • 75-foot Hatteras Motor Yacht; sport cruiser; twin diesel, 1800 hp each; cruising speed 28 mph. Price: $4,375,000 for 2017
  • 74-foot Ocean Alexander Motoryacht; twin diesel, 1150 hp each; cruising speed 24 mph. Price: $1,895,000 for 2011

100 Foot Yacht Costs (and up):

You are officially in the superyacht range.

These yachts come in all styles and shapes, allowing for cruising along coastlines or focusing on watercraft and speed boating.

Since this is likely the peak size boat for practical use, you can expect a lot of additional costs for hiring a crew, maintenance, docking, as well as stocking your boat full of amenities.

You’re likely to spend the bulk of your costs furnishing this size boat as bigger yachts typically are sold without furniture. The previous owner will want to hold on to designer furniture and other expensive interior.

Check out these great  examples of 100-foot yachts .

Our Pick: 143′ 04″ Virtus 44

sailing yacht a value

This model cost around $20,189,000.

This mega yacht is anyone’s dream.

It is home to a fully integrated beach club with room for a pool deck, floor-to-ceiling windows in the main salon, a hot tub on the top deck, five staterooms, an 8-person crew, and room to sleep ten guests.

It has room for water toys and other gadgets, with a layout that keeps them purposefully hidden from the outside world. It has a 12-knot cruising speed and 16-knot max speed,

Other 100+ Feet Yachts Price Examples

  • 98′ 5″ AB 100 Price: $8,843,260 for 2018
  • 161′ 04″ Acico Nassima Price: $17,933,000 for 2012

How Much is Yacht Insurance?

Insurance on a yacht is around 1% of the purchase price per year. It can go higher if you have lots of expensive designer furniture. This can add up over the years. It’s often cheaper to insure a sailing yacht but the price range is still within the 0.7-1.3%.

What Other Expenses Do Yacht Owners Face?

Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.

How Much Does a Luxury Yacht Cost?

A super yacht fall under the category of “luxury yachts” or “mega-yachts”.

The world’s largest private vessel belongs to the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Azzam. It is 590 feet long and costs $600 million to build!

It is outliers like these that increase the price average for yacht owners, perhaps scaring potential owners when they start their research.

As a luxury yacht price guide, however, we need to look at averages.

Currently, the average superyacht costs $275 million. This does not even account for maintenance costs, either.

Superyachts are large and luxurious, needing a professional crew to help them run. They are designed to emphasize comfort, speed, and longer expeditions – depending on the yacht builders.

They might have:

  • swimming pools,
  • water toys,
  • diving and fishing poles,
  • fully furnished rooms,
  • helicopter landing pads,
  • and smaller support vessels

Just to name a few amenities. They are truly the epitome of the elite.

What Size Boat is Considered a Yacht?

The normal yacht length starts at around 23 feet, and can extend hundreds of feet.  If the boat meets 23 feet, it can be considered a yacht.

A boat does not need luxury features to be considered a yacht.

It can be minimal and stripped of the “extra” stuff to fall into the yacht category, so long as it meets the size and length criteria.

11 Things to Consider Before You Purchase

When making this purchase, the yacht size you buy needs to reflect what you hope to get out of the vessel.

Some important questions to ask yourself before you buy are:

  • What does your perfect day on the water look like?
  • How long will your average day on the water be?
  • Will it be more boating/watercraft focused or long cruise focused?
  • Will you use the yacht for fishing?
  • Will you be on the yacht every day of the week or just on weekends?
  • How many people do you hope to fit on the yacht?
  • Do you plan to stay on the yacht overnight?
  • Where will you dock the yacht?
  • How much boating experience do you have?
  • How fast do you want the yacht to go?
  • How important is it to have extra amenities like furnished rooms, water toys, electronics, etc.?

These questions will guide you to understand the size you really need and will be able to realistically maintain versus what your most ideal yacht would look like.

When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?

At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew.

A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.

Sometimes, you must be honest with yourself about what you want and what you actually need. Be self-aware about your abilities (or lack thereof) in taking care of a specific size yacht.

If you don’t know much about boats and navigation, you will need more help to use your vessel.

Hopefully, this comprehensive guide gives you a good starting point as you begin your yacht price research process.

Important Things to Consider As Well

Although there are many factors to consider when understanding a yacht’s prices, it is an exciting purchase nonetheless and should be enjoyed as much as possible.

At the end of your research, you’ll be the owner of a beautiful yacht you can use for leisure, cruising, sports craft, fishing, or all of the above.

Although this article is a good starting point, we would also recommend getting in touch with a  yacht broker who can help you find your best fit , model, year, and the price is given your personal budget.

They are great sources of knowledge in addition to personal research.

Make sure you are as patient as possible in this process to make sure you are covering all your bases, but most importantly, enjoy the process!

Here’s How Much Yachts Cost on Average:

Yachts start around $300,000 for smaller 40-foot models and can go as high as several hundred million dollars for superyachts.

These are the main contributing factors to the price of a yacht:

  • The size of the yacht
  • The age of the yacht
  • The brand and  type of yacht

In general, the larger the yacht is, the more important the quality of the build becomes.

Also, potential owners need to understand the cruising speed and propulsion of different yachts.

The yacht type is also broken down into two categories:

  • Mediterranean Style Open style expresses yacht with maximum space for sun, little-to-no shade on the deck.
  • Hard-top express Semi-enclosed or fully-enclosed space on deck for the operator
  • Flybridge yachts

An express yacht is often referred to interchangeably as an  express cruiser  or  sports cruiser .

It has a single deck above the hull with a living space below.

They are much sleeker, too.

A flybridge yacht is often referred to as a sedan bridge or sport bridge, and it is typically used for fishing. It has additional space above the main deck.

Since the flybridge area has more space on the second deck, the main deck is normally made up of enclosed spaces and rooms.

It can have an open-air layout but can also have a hard-top.

How to Determine the Value of Your Boat: A Comprehensive Guide

sailing yacht a value

Owning a boat can be a joyful experience, providing you with leisurely days out on the water or thrilling adrenaline-pumping adventures. However, there may come a time when you decide to sell your boat, and that’s when determining its value becomes crucial. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the steps to establish a fair market value for your boat, ensuring you get the best possible price when you’re ready to sell or trade.

1. Research the Local Market

The first step in determining your boat’s value is to understand the current market trends in your area. Look for comparable boats for sale in local listings, online classifieds, and nearby dealerships to get a feel for the going rate. Keep in mind the following factors while researching:

  • Similar makes and models
  • Boat’s age
  • Condition and equipment
  • Location of the sale

Note any significant differences or patterns you observe, as this information will help you in pricing your boat competitively.

2. Condition Assessment

Your boat’s condition will have a significant impact on its overall value. To get a fair estimate, be honest with yourself about the cosmetic and mechanical state of your boat. Make a note of any areas that may require repair or upgrading.

When assessing the condition of your boat, consider the following factors:

  • Exterior appearance
  • Interior appearance
  • Engine and mechanical systems
  • Electronics and navigational equipment
  • Sails and rigging (if applicable)
  • Any modifications or customizations

It may also be helpful to have a marine surveyor or mechanic evaluate your boat, as potential buyers could request an independent assessment.

3. Online Valuation Tools

Many websites and organizations offer online boat valuation tools to help you determine the value of your vessel. Some of the most popular options include:

  • NADA Guides (National Automobile Dealers Association)
  • Boat Trader
  • BUCValu (by BUC Research)

These tools will typically ask for information such as make, model, year, and features to arrive at a price range for your particular boat. These values will be based on statistical data and historical trends, providing a good starting point for your boat’s value. However, keep in mind that these tools may not consider unique aspects of your boat like aftermarket upgrades, recent repairs, or other factors that could affect its value.

4. Consult Marine Insurance Policies and Loan Providers

If you have a boat insurance policy or a loan on your vessel, it can be helpful to review the agreed value of the boat. Insurance companies and loan providers utilize marine surveyors and experienced professionals to determine the fair market value of a boat. While this information might not always reflect the current market, it can provide you with valuable insight into your boat’s worth.

5. Use a Broker or Dealer (Optional)

If you are not comfortable determining your boat’s value yourself or want a professional opinion, consider engaging a boat broker or a local dealer. They can provide valuable advice on pricing and the current market situation in your area. Keep in mind that brokers and dealers may charge a fee or commission for their services.

By following these steps, you should have a solid understanding of your boat’s value in the current market. This price range should enable you to list your boat competitively when selling, ensuring that you receive a fair price for your investment. Remember, being honest about your boat’s condition and understanding its unique features is key to determining its true worth. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the boat selling process with confidence.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

6 Steps To Evaluate The Correct Value Of A Yacht For Sale

By Emilie Barland | Posted On Aug 07, 2017 Updated On Feb 25, 2019

Whether you are looking to purchase or sell a yacht, evaluating its financial value is absolutely crucial to a successful transaction. Without this type of evaluation, you risk making a bad deal that could negatively impact your finances moving forward.

But just how do you evaluate your future of existing boat? When looking at yachts for sale , the evaluation can be more general as you decide whether the selling price is worth your investment. When selling your own, of course, that evaluation is more complex and should be done with the help of professional brokers. In either case, here are 6 variables that will help you estimate just how much the yacht is worth.

1) The Size of the Yacht

Obviously, size matters. Larger yachts tend to cost more money, as they tend to have more space available for anyone aboard. It’s important to consider size in terms of both overall length and interior square footage. Both will directly impact how much the boat is worth.

2) The Age of the Yacht

Just as obviously, age also matters. Older yachts tend to be less expensive, as they already have sometimes significant wear on their bodies. The average lifespan of a yacht depends on its state of repairs (more on that below), but a boat near the end of its life will become less valuable to both the seller and buyer.

3) The Location of the Yacht

You might be surprised just how much the location matters when you buy or sell your yacht. Warmer climates tend to result in more expensive ships, while colder climates and less popular ports can depress values. At the same time, yachting also tends to be a supply and demand economy; the more ships are for sale in the area of the yacht you’re looking at, the lower the price and value will be.

4) Current State of Repairs

As much as the age of the ship in question matters, its current state of repairs may be just as important. Naturally, the degree to which an older ship is renovated can play into its value. External repairs also matter; a well-maintained yacht has a significant advantage over one that can barely stay above water.

5) Time on Market

The longer a yacht remains available for sale, the more its value will depress. Again, the reason is a simple demand equation: when demand proves negligible at the current price, that price has to be lowered to continue attracting interest. On average, it takes about a year to sell a yacht. If the ship in question has been on the market for longer, its value might be affected.

6) Additional Features Above Standard

Finally, pay special attention to the features the boat you are considering offers that other, comparable ships do not. These features, of course, can range widely depending on the size of the ship and especially for luxury yachts.

We offer ships with helicopter pads, drydocks, space for jetskis, exterior pools, and much more. On the interior, crew’s quarters, master retreats, dedicated dining spaces, and media rooms are just some of the many possibilities. The more features, the more valuable the yacht will become.

These six steps are a great starting point to evaluate the yacht. Of course, other factors also matter; for instance, the health of the engine is a vital variable in determining its worth. It also makes sense to browse the web and yachting magazines for comparables in order to get a better idea of its value.

Finally, consider working with professional brokers for a more accurate estimate of your yacht’s value. The increased accuracy you get will be well worth this additional step to make sure you get a good deal. Contact us directly, or fill out our yacht evaluation form to get started on that process.

boats in a marina with text: "A guide to used boat prices & valuation: 3 ways to determine a used boat's "fair market value""

Understanding used boat values should be like understanding car prices, right? Just look up the NADA or Kelley blue book value and you’re on your way.

Unfortunately, it’s not that easy! Why? Because many personal watercraft and boat models aren’t listed in boat value guides.

How do I find the value of my boat?

There are a few different ways to find out what a boat is worth .

  • Hire a professional. Pay a surveyor or broker to tell you what your boat is worth
  • Use online calculators. If you have a common boat make and model, there are several sites you can use to look up used boat values. These are especially helpful if you’re interested in popular and new models, but less useful for uncommon and old boats.
  • Do your own boat value calculation . We’ll show you how to roughly estimate the value of a boat and walk you through an example. Don’t worry, the math is easy and we’ve provided a free downloadable calculator at the end of this post.

Hire a professional: marine surveyors, boat brokers, marine mechanics

While there’s no substitute for doing your own research, sometimes it’s helpful to get a professional opinion. Here are some of the service providers that can help you value a used boat.

Marine surveyors

What does a marine surveyor do.

A marine surveyor will physically inspect the boat and tell you what they think the boat is worth. Usually, this takes place on the dock or in a boatyard and doesn’t include sea trials.

How much should a marine survey cost?

Boat survey cost varies depending on the type of survey being performed. A purchase survey may cost upwards of $18 per foot of boat length , whereas a less detailed insurance condition and valuation survey may cost upwards of $16 per foot.

What is involved in a marine survey?

  • Purchase condition and valuation ($18+ per foot). This involves a deep 3-6 hour inspection. The surveyor will ask to see the boat both in the water and out of the water. The final report for purchase surveys will list both a “replacement value” and a “market value” as well as any deficiencies.
  • Insurance condition and valuation ($16+ per foot): This survey is less expensive and less detailed. It’s more for boat owners who are looking to insure their boats. Most insurance companies ask owners to submit a recent survey of the vessel. While not as detailed as the previous survey, it will still provide you with a suggested boat market value.

Do I really need to hire a professional marine surveyor?

It comes down to your boat knowledge, the complexity of the boat, and your financial risk tolerance.

If you’re new to boating you’ll want an experienced eye to help you assess the boat for safety and help you figure out a fair price.

If you’re buying something small and simple like a kayak or dinghy, a visual inspection will likely reveal any potential problems.

However, boat systems can be extremely complex on larger vessels and that’s where a professional marine surveyor’s opinion will pay dividends .

Keep in mind, that while a boat survey may seem expensive, it could actually save you money over the course of the sales transaction. A surveyor will be able to spot problems with the boat that you might miss which can help you negotiate a lower purchase price .

Generally speaking, if you’re spending more than $5,000 on a boat , or plan on financing it through a boat loan it’s probably worth having it professionally surveyed.

How do I find a good boat surveyor?

Your best bet is to look for surveyors affiliated with the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) or the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) . You can search for a surveyor in your area on the NAMS and SAMS websites.

Ask other boaters for a  recommendation on a marine surveyor in your area. Some surveyors are more experienced, knowledgeable, and expensive than others.

For example, there is a surveyor in the Pacific Northwest who earned the nickname “Dr. Doom” by being so thorough that he almost always finds problems with a boat.

Interview potential surveyors and ask what type of boat they specialize in . Some will be more familiar with sail, while others may have a specialty like pontoon boats, houseboats, or wooden hulls.

Boat brokers

A boat broker or boat dealer is the equivalent of a realtor in the boating world . They can be very helpful in determining used boat values, not only because brokers have an experienced eye and a sense for the local market, but also because they have access to a very special data set.

Boat dealers who advertise on YachtWorld (which most do) have access to a massive private database that shows the actual selling prices for boats (not just the list prices that regular users see).

Should I use a boat broker to buy a boat?

While boat brokers generally represent the selling party, you can hire one to represent you as a buyer.

If you don’t hire a broker it’s still worth calling their offices to get their thoughts on the value of your boat or a boat you’re interested in. Usually, they’re very friendly and happy to share their knowledge. They may even point you in the direction of a good deal that you’d missed.

How much is a boat broker?

A broker is paid a commission by the seller (usually in the neighborhood of 10% of the selling price).

Marine mechanics

Used boat values are heavily impacted by the condition of a boat’s engine because engines are so expensive to replace. In some situations, a boat might be worth next to nothing if the engine is shot.

While engine hours can be a useful indicator, even a brand-new engine could have lurking issues. For that reason, some potential buyers will hire a marine mechanic to inspect the outboard motor or engine before purchasing a boat.

If you’re concerned about a boat’s engine you can also take a sample of the boat’s fuel and send it off to a fuel lab, they’ll send you a report with valuable information on the condition of the engine.

Check an online boat value calculator

There are a few boat pricing guides that allow you to look up used boat values. These can be helpful for finding average prices on relatively new boats.

  • J.D. Power NADA Guides
  • Kelley Blue Book (personal watercraft only)

While online calculators like the NADA boat guide may be able to provide you with a boat book value, they pose a couple of issues:

  • Your boat may not be listed. The problem with the NADA boat prices calculator is that the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) only has listings for the most popular boat types , makes, and models . If you’re researching a common boat, you might be able to use this to look up prices. However, anything else is unlikely to be listed.
  • The listed prices are averages and don’t consider individual deficiencies (or upgrades) specific to a particular boat. Even if you find a used boat price listed in NADA, it doesn’t mean that it’s an accurate price for your particular boat.

Screenshot of NADA Guides website showing search results for a 1979 Dufour 35

How to estimate a boat’s value (when it’s not listed on NADA Boat values)

Boat value guides like NADA and Kelley Blue Book can offer useful data points. However, it’s important to do your own research.

We’ll share how we estimate a boat’s value but bear in mind that our process may not apply in your situation. Do your research, use your judgment, and seek out a professional opinion (see above).

STEP 1: Evaluate the list price

We always take the listed price with a few grains of salt. From talking to yacht broker friends and from our own experiences, we’ve found that boats often don’t sell for the list price . In fact, most of our first offers have been in the range of 70-80% of the list price.

Craigslist is especially useful for finding cheap boats, we share the  secrets for searching out great deals on Craigslist .

If we are interested in a boat, one of the first things we do is ask for a copy of the most recent yacht survey. The survey will tell us a bit about the boat’s history and what the boat was worth at the time of the survey.

Beware of sellers who use 10-year-old survey reports to justify their current asking price!

I go on Craigslist and find a Dufour 35 sailboat from 1979, listed at $20,000. I contact the seller and ask for the most recent survey. They send me a 15-year-old survey that lists the boat’s value as $45,000.

Sales listing for a 1970 Dufour 35 sailboat

STEP 2: Do some comparison shopping

We always start by comparing the boat we’re interested in with similar boats, both locally and around the world .

There are dozens of sites you can check, but in general, we find these to be the best places to buy a used boat .

Looking at the sales prices in the local area is a good place to start. We first check out the used boats in our local area by searching yacht brokers, classified ads, Craigslist, and Kijiji w ithin a 500-mile radius.

Next, we search on Yachtworld and Sailboat Listings of the boat’s exact year and model.

There are three important things to consider when comparing used boats

  • The condition. Some boats are better maintained than others. A boat in good condition will command a higher price than a boat in poor condition.
  • The location. Some boat markets are cheaper than others (e.g., boats cost less in Mexico and more in Australia)
  • The year the boat was built. As with cars, expect lower prices for older boats (e.g., a 20-year-old fishing boat should be worth less than one build last year)

If you can’t find more than one or two comparable boats of the same model, you could expand your search to include slightly larger or smaller boats made by the same boat manufacturer. Failing that you could look at similar boat types and sizes made by other boat manufacturers.

I search for Dufour 35s on Craigslist, Kijiji, Yachtworld, and Sailboat Listings, and here are the results:

spreadsheet listing used boat prices for various Dufour 35s

STEP 3: Use a price curve to estimate the market value of a used boat over time

In evaluating a particular boat we have as gone as far as making depreciation curves. Don’t worry—it sounds complicated, but it’s not. You can download our free calculator at the bottom of this post .

We collect all the listings for comparable boats in Excel and then plot them on a scatter-plot graph.

For example, if we are looking at a 41’ Beneteau, we search for all Beneteaus in the 40-43’ range. We put the age and price of every boat into an Excel document and plot them on a scatter-plot graph.

Next, we add a trend line (usually polynomial, order 2) to fit the data. This will give us an idea of what the price of the boat is doing over time and we can project where the price will be going in the next few years.

If we were planning to sell in a few years we would want to keep the boat resale values in mind and choose a year near the beginning of a low slope segment of the trend line.

Sometimes the trend line is skewed by overly-idealistic sellers or junk boats, which we consider outliers and often strike from the data.

I plug the prices I find into the Calculator (download yours for FREE at the end of this post) and I get the following trend line. The more data points (comparable boats) you add to the Excel sheet the better your estimate will be! Having only five data points is not great, but it’s all I could find for a Dufour 35. Based on this curve line I should assume that a 1979 Dufour 35 (the boat I’m thinking of buying) is worth ~ $29,000.

Graph showing boat prices over time

STEP 4: Estimate what it will cost to get the boat to “fair” condition

When we go to inspect a boat, we  write down any projects and repairs that will need to be done (see our boat inspection checklist ).

Our goal is to list all the boat systems that need work and any parts that should be repaired or replaced. If you’re not experienced with boat systems and mechanics, hire a professional or bring a friend who is.

Next, we assign a material and labor cost to each project.

In general, we don’t add normal maintenance costs because that would skew the value and be unfair to the seller. The exception is if the seller hasn’t been maintaining the boat and we would be playing catch up.

We add all of the repair costs to the list price for a total (which is usually depressingly high). We often multiply the repair costs by 1.25 as we’ve found we are usually optimistic about price and time.

It’s also a good idea to ask the owner what they’ll be taking off the boat. Sometimes owners will want to exclude electronics or outboard motors from the sale, which can amount to a fair chunk of change.

Upon inspecting the Dufour 35 I discover there is some work to be done! The GPS doesn’t work ($1,000 replacement cost), the mainsail is wrecked beyond repair ( $2,000 replacement cost) and the furler needs to be replaced ($3,000). I’ll have to spend at least $6,000 fixing up the boat, which I multiply by a factor of 1.25 (because there will likely be additional fixes!). So, I estimate it will be $7,500 to get the boat into “fair” condition.

man in a hat looking at the hull of a boat in a boat yard

STEP 5: Putting it all together

When you combine the list price and the cost of repairs you’ll be left with the actual price of the boat . Compare this to the comparable estimated price (Step 2) and you’ll have a sense of whether the boat is priced too high, too low, or just right!

If it’s in the right price range, it’s a good time to start thinking about transportation, taxation, and financing costs. You can often score a great deal if you search farther afield but you have to factor in any moving costs and taxes. Ask yourself:

  • Will you have to ship the boat?
  • Does the price include a boat trailer?
  • Will you pay taxes or duties?
  • Will you need to finance your boat? If so, have you looked into boat loans?

If you’re thinking of buying abroad, you might want to learn about sailboat arbitrage —the art of buying and selling boats in the right markets. Some people have even managed to sail around the world for free by buying and selling their boats in the right geographies.

When I take the list price ($20,000) and add the repair costs ($7,500) I realize the boat will cost me $27,500 in total. When I compare that to my comparable estimated price of $29,000, I can see that this boat is in the right ballpark and probably fairly priced.

A COUPLE OF ADDITIONAL THINGS TO CONSIDER

Emotional pricing.

Sometimes owners put so much money and hard work into a boat that they value the boat higher than the market does. It takes time and a few offers to wear down the emotional seller to a more rational price point.

Sometimes, the seller sets an idealistic price and won’t budge because they don’t really want to sell.  We have encountered this a few times and we move on to the next boat.

Emotional buying

The corollary to emotional pricing is emotional buying.

Sometimes we fall in love with a boat; something about the interior layout or the lines or the color of the hull, even the name can have a profound influence.

We can’t help but let our emotions into the decision-making process, but we have found that they should be reserved for the final decision. To minimize our emotions, we try to quantify everything in terms of numbers and put it in an Excel sheet.

A final note: Determining used boat values is more art than science. Take all of this with a grain of salt and USE YOUR JUDGMENT! The calculator and recommendations above are in no way meant to be a substitute for professional advice.

As Publilius Syrus wrote: “Something is only worth  what someone is  willing to pay  for it”. Good luck and happy boat buying!

Which Sailboats Hold Their Value?

Which Sailboats Hold Their Value? | Life of Sailing

‍ Key Takeaways

  • There are a handful of sailboat options that hold their value the best over the years
  • The average boat resales between $30,000 and $100,000 depending on size and age
  • Boats hold their value better when they are taken care of and loved
  • The brokerage market for boats will vary based on location so the value also fluctuates
  • Consider joining a yacht club to learn more about resale values of boats

‍ Sailboats are considered investments by many and can vary in value over the years. But which sailboats hold their value?

Sailboats such as Tayana 37, Tartan 37, and the Hallberg-Rassy 35 are a few examples of sailboats that have good resale value. Other multihull sailboats such as Hobie 16, Fountaine Pajot Elba 45, and Antares 44i also have some of the best resale value.

In my experience, a boat depreciates due to a variety of factors such as age and current condition. The brand name associated with the used boat will also impact the boat depreciation and the boat’s resale value.

‍ Top 12 Best Sailboats That Hold Their Value

Depending on the type of sailboat you have will determine the resale value that you can get out of it at a later date. Some boats will hold their value due to quality or market trends that might not be in your control.

A lot of sailboat brands have been able to show good value as their boats become older and allows the seller to gain back a decent amount of their investment. The following sailboats have shown to hold their value longer than other sailboat brands in the market.

Tayana 37

The Tayana 37 was built in 1976 but still remains a popular option for classic boat enthusiasts to get their hands on a timeless boat. Even after 45 years you can still find one in good condition for as high as $80,000. As the boat seller you are able to get a decent amount back on your investment.

Tartan 37

Tartan has made some of the most memorable models for blue water sailing dating back to the 1980’s. These boats had a balsa cored deck that made it appealing to sailors during that time. The Tartan 37 can stil l be found for around $65,000 in good condition depending on age and location.

Hallberg-Rassy 35

Hallberg-Rassy 35

The Hallberg-Rassy 35 Rasmus is one of the most popular classic models from their sailboat line. They are actually quite difficult to find since most original owners still have them or the current ones are continuing to keep them in sailing form. You can find a select few ranging up to $45,000 for this quality sailboat.

Hobie 16

There are a little over 100,000 Hobie 16’s built and are one of the most popular catamarans. You can think of these as pontoon boats for bluewater and these smaller multihull boats have excellent resale value due to their reliability and ease of transportation. You can find older models hovering near $10,000 or less.

Fountaine Pajot Elba 45

For those that have a bigger budget the Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 holds onto its value even after just a few short years. This is a luxury catamaran known for its comfort and sailability. You can find ones just a few years old that still hover near $900,000.

Antares 44i

Antares 44i

Fans of catamaran boats likely will name the Antares in their top 10 or even top five of best catamarans on the market. With such a popularity rating they often hold their value for their performance on the water as well as their comfort. You can see these typically around $600,000 for one that is over a decade old if you are lucky.

Catalina 22

Catalina 22

One of the most iconic trailerable boats in existence is the Catalina 22 . They are ideal for those that have limited experience or wanting to have a smaller sailboat. These prices can range anywhere between $5,000 to $20,000 for used sailboats depending on age and condition of boat.

Island Packet 31

For sailors that enjoy shoal drafts the Island Packet 31 features a solid fiberglass hull that is great for longevity and shallow waters. It is easier to maintain than other comparable boats which also drives the demand for inexperienced sailors. You can see Island Packets typically near $50,000 for a 1985 version in good condition.

C&C Landfall 38

C&C Landfall 38

C&C has made some of the most popular sail boats among the sailing world. These are difficult to find but not impossible. When you do find one they typically hover around $30,000 for a 1980 model in desirable condition.

Beneteau 423

Beneteau 423

When you think of boats that are iconic and have little annual depreciation the Beneteau comes to mind. Their 423 model still remains one of their popular options around $80,000 for a 2004 version. The quality and sturdiness make it a great blue water boat that is worth your money.

One of the most famous sailing yachts is the Amel 64. Amel has been making sailing yachts since the 1980’s with some of the most memorable and luxury sailworthy models in their lineup. These can be hard to find but they usually sell for around $1.38 million .

Lagoon 380

The Lagoon 380 might be one of the most affordable luxury catamarans if you can find an older model. At one time it was one of the most popular sailing catamarans during its debut but other competitors have gave them a run for their money. You can likely find some in good condition around $240,000 and up.

Reasons Boats Appreciate or Hold Their Value

Buying a boat is similar to an investment. As with any investment opportunity you should always consider the pros and cons.

The reason you should consider it an investment is because you are spending time and money to maintain the quality of it while you use it and one day you can hopefully get most of your money back from it. Under most circumstances a boat will begin to lose some of its value once you have made your purchase and begin sailing it.

Sailing Classics

If you have a boat that was similar to ones used in movies or has other novelty appeal to it then it will likely have a good resale value. Classic older boats have nostalgia tied to them just like classic cars.

If there were only so many models made and you have one in great condition this also drives the value behind a classic boats. Keep in mind that taking care of a classic boat will eventually cost more than what you will make when trying to sell it.

Bargains at the Right Time

Boats tend to sell best when it is the right time of year for them. If you purchased a boat from someone when it was out of season and did minor work on it then you could look to sell it again once boating season begins. Timing plays a decent role in most large purchases throughout the year.

Supply and Demand

Selling a boat in places like Florida or along the coast will definitely help with finding a buyer. But you have to account for the amount of used boats that are currently being sold and how unique yours is to the market.

If there are 100 Hobie 16’s in your local area along the coast then you will either need to make your price competitive or choose to find a location that has very little for sale. If there is little competition among other boat owners then this will help increase your sale price.

How Long Do Sailboats Typically Hold Their Value?

Sailboats usually have one of the best resale values among other boats in the market. This has to do with a variety of factors but mainly the niche of boat and less moving parts compared to power boats.

A sailboat that retails around $40,000 will only lose about $10,000 after five years of owning it. Assuming you take good care of it then it will be worth roughly about $20,000 after 15 years. In other words a sailboat will lose half of its value somewhere between 10 and 15 years.

Sailboats hold their value a little longer since they do no rely as heavily on powered equipment such as the engine or dual motors. Fishing boats and pontoon boats values drop sharply after five years since they have to be powered by a motor.

When is the Best Time to Sell a Boat?

If you want the most asking price for you boat you can slightly increase the value of the boat simply by selling it at the right time of the year. As the seasons change your negotiation prices will also vary.

The most ideal times to sell a boat is anywhere between February and July. However you should aim to have everything ready to sell it by early spring. Boating season begins around spring so potential buyers wanted to make changes or first time boat owners are likely going to be shopping around.

Keep in mind that you might not get the best price if you are trying to sell it in the fall months or just after sailing season. November is regarded as one of the worst months for trying to sell a boat so avoid this month in general for trying to post it if you can. You can still sell your boat but expect lower negotiations from buyers that want to store their boat for the winter months.

How to Increase Boat Value Over the Years?

Boats will rarely appreciate but the best thing you can do is to slow down how quickly the boat depreciates. Some brands and models have a high resale value in general.

With a little bit of research and hard work you can increase the boat value and get it ready for the market. How exactly can you do that to be as close to the purchase price when you try to sell your boat?

Excellent Cleaning

In order to increase the resale value of a used boat you can make attempts to regularly clean it inside and out. No one wants a dirty boat that has stains or noticeable chips in the exterior. Aim to have proper waxing like an epoxy resin and cleaning when taking it out of saltwater.

Routine Maintenance and Records

Boats should always follow some sort of schedule when it comes to maintenance. From oil changes to inspecting the sails you should have a checklist and keep proper documentation. This paper trail will not only allow you to keep track of your history but it will let buyers know what to expect on a well maintained boat before buying.

Customized Look

If you have an older used boat that has outdated seating arrangements or lights it might be time for an upgrade. This could also be installing new carpet or flooring as well as a new refrigerator. Keep in mind of the upgrades that would rival what a new boat already has.

Mechanical Improvements

It might be time to upgrade your navigational system or engine on an older boat. An old boat might need a little more work and be considered a fixer upper but it could offer the best value depending on your budget. Try to do as much research as you can to see what upgrades you could add to it and make it more appealing to potential buyers.

Proper Inspection

You should think about having a professional look over your boat before or after you try to make improvements. It makes the most sense to wait beforehand to make any adjustments because a bigger ticket item may need fixing first. A survey can help increase boat value simply because it gives an honest update about the condition of the boat.

Presentation

When you feel that it is the time to sell you should take the time to properly display it accordingly. You will need to have some high quality photographs taken or hire a professional. After that you can post it on boating websites that have a lot of traffic or your local options to get buyers interested.

Parsifal III: Meet the charter star of Below Deck's sailing yacht spin-off

This week, producers have confirmed season five of hit reality TV show Below Deck Sailing Yacht will return to screens on 7 October for more crew drama and on-the-water antics. Set on the Balearic island of Ibiza, the series will again feature the 54-metre Perini Navi superyacht Parsifal III with Captain Glenn Shephard at the helm. In anticipation of the series' return, BOAT reflects on an interview with her owner Kim Vibe-Petersen , who unpacked the realities of filming a reality TV series on board his boat ahead of season three.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is a spin-off series of the hit superyacht reality TV show Below Deck that follows the lives of the crew and guests across an eight-week charter season. For Danish owner Kim Vibe-Petersen, Parsifal III' s return is yet another opportunity to show off the yacht's charter credentials.

Vibe-Petersen was personally approached by Below Deck producers in 2018 after they struggled to find a suitable sailing yacht. Parsifal III fitted the bill as she was already equipped for charter and a number of her existing crew were willing to take part in the show.

The Perini Navi sailing yacht first hit the water in 2005 and rose to instant fame scoring a number of prestigious accolades including a coveted Neptune at the World Superyacht Awards . On her launch, she also joined the ranks as one of the fast Perini Navi superyachts on the water with a top speed of 18 knots under full sail granted by two high-tech carbon masts, automated in-boom furling and a winged keel.

Vibe-Petersen admitted there were some yacht owners who didn’t want the names of their yachts connected with the drama-filled reality show, but he "didn’t have that concern." Although he had the option to change the yacht’s name for filming, he decided to keep it to maximise the charter appeal of  Parsifal III .

"It’s free advertising," he said. "The name of the yacht will come to people’s minds, especially to someone who has never chartered a yacht before. They will see that name and know the boat from the show."

Vibe-Petersen was also keen to secure a guaranteed packed charter schedule during low season. "I think there were a lot of boats that did not want to be chartered for the show but it's good money in the bank," he said.

While admitting he might not be the "specific audience targeted by the series," he said he has sat down to watch the first series, which took place in Corfu. Even in Vibe-Peterson’s home country of Denmark, the US show has gained a big following.

"This is the kind of show where they want to make a little drama," he added. "It’s not that wild on board a normal charter." The conveyor belt of colourful guests are chosen by the production team and given a "big discount" for appearing on the show.

Vibe-Petersen also explained the complicated logistics of filming Below Deck , each season of which features 16 charters filmed across a period of eight weeks. This means that two groups of guests separately charter the yacht in a single week. Meanwhile, the production team require a time period of at least a week to get  Parsifal III  rigged up and fit for filming. "There are 30 people on board each day with lots of wires and cameras – it’s a big, big operation."

Season one was filmed in Corfu, Greece, which posed a number of challenges for  Parsifal III as the sailing yacht was required to have a specific charter licence. "It’s pretty tough to get that," said Vibe-Petersen. "It’s not something we can do within a short amount of time. It can take 10 to 12 weeks to get a charter licence so it takes time."

For her second season, Parsifal III was filmed cruising Croatia's 3,600 miles of coastline. For season three, the show follows Parsifal III as she cruises around the Spanish island of Menorca, carrying a mix of new and old crew.

Season five of Below Deck Sailing Yacht will feature returning department heads chief stew Daisy Kelliher and first mate Gary King, while chef Cloyce Martin, chief engineer Davide Morosi, stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren, and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch are amongst the new crew members.

Parsifal III is managed for charter by Camper & Nicholsons with a weekly charter rate starting from €245,000.

Electric Candela hydrofoil boat sets world record by crossing Baltic Sea

An all-electric hydrofoiling boat from Swedish company Candela has set two new world records by travelling between Stockholm and the Finnish autonomous region of Åland, marking the first time an electric boat has crossed the Baltic Sea.

Candela, which has developed a range of electric hydrofoil boats and ships, wanted to demonstrate that “that zero-emission sea travel is not only possible today, but that foiling electric ships and boats are so much cheaper to operate than fossil-fuelled vessels.”

The record-breaking journey was undertaken in the Candela C-8, a €330,000 ($A544,500) leisure craft, equipped with a battery from technology partner Polestar.

The journey covered 150 nautical miles from the port of Frihamn in Stockholm, Sweden, to Mariehamn, the capital and largest town of the Åland Islands, an autonomous region of Finland, with a charging stop in Kapellskär.

While charging along the trip was made mostly with existing charging infrastructure, a 40kW Kempower Movable Charger was needed in Kapellskär.

Leaving from Frihamn at 6am, the Candela C-8 made it to Mariehamn by lunchtime, and returned to Frihamn the same day.

“The disadvantage of electric boats has been their short range, due to traditional boat hulls consuming so much energy,” said Gustav Hasselskog , the company’s CEO and founder.

“With our hydrofoil technology, we combine high speed and range, but you get so many other benefits. Flying over the Åland Sea in total silence and without slamming was absolutely magical.”

A gasoline-powered chase boat of similar size accompanied the Candela C-8 on the journey and had to be refuelled for a cost of €750, or around $A1,230. For comparison, the Candela C-8 consumed 213 kWh of electricity, at a cost of about €40-50 (around $A66-83).

“We actually had range anxiety, but not for the Candela,” said Gustav Hasselskog.

“The irony is that the photographer’s gasoline-powered chase boat had to refuel six times during the trip, while we only charged three times.

“We’re talking about 95% lower operating costs,” concluded Hasselskog. “This is a revolution that makes waterborne transöport competitive with land transport in terms of costs, which we will now demonstrate in public transport in Stockholm.”

We are definitely in an age of disruption, as much as the bashers, critics and cynics like to deny it. Amazing, 1/25th the cost of their ICE partner boat! And quieter, cleaner and calmer too boot!

Google informs me a litre of diesel is € 1.668, so that trip would have used ~450 litres of diesel, or 4,500 kWh. That’s shockingly inefficient.

Unless the ICE partner boat was a similar sized hydrofoil design, it’s comparing apples and oranges. Candela’s own website reckons hydrofoils are up to 80% more efficient than conventional hulled boats, which translates to about 50 litres of fuel.

Please stick to the script. We’re not here to point out inconsistencies. We’re here to deride the people who don’t agree with us. Otherwise, what’s the point of social media?

The point of the voyage WAS demonstrating the efficiency of their hydrofoil design. They used the electric motor to drive home the point.

I’m all for cheaper and cleaner water transöport!

I’ve got a well maintained canoe you could be interested in.

Get back to us when it can cross an ocean. Anyone can cross a sea. Proof of concept can be done with rubber bands, icypole sticks and plastic straws.

Why would a 30 ft leisure craft need to cross the Atlantic? There are currently no 30 ft leisure craft, ICE or otherwise, that can cross the Atlantic.

So it’s not intended to be for mass transport, more of a rich wanker mover? Ok, fine. Plenty of them on here.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5’s trailer has finally arrived, and with Captain Glenn Shephard’s crew including First Officer Gary King, fans are disappointed in the show’s return . While Below Deck viewers have been impatiently awaiting news about Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 for over a year, the trailer has finally been released, and has many concerned about what the season is going to look like. While the trailer reveals the return of some familiar faces, the storylines that appear to be part of the season left viewers feeling uneasy. After Gary’s sexual misconduct allegations, his involvement seems overwhelming.

In the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 trailer, the crew’s chartering guests around Ibiza in a new sailing adventure. With Gary showing up early in the trailer after Daisy Kelliher makes her grand entrance, things get dicey quickly. “That’s right, we have a f****** job and I’m not carrying this f****** season on my own you f****** prick,” Daisy shouts at Gary in one moment of the trailer as he lays in his bed, looking dismayed. The rest of the trailer shows the genuine chaos of the season, featuring Gary heavily much to the surprise of Below Deck viewers .

What Gary’s Involvement In Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Means

He’s part of the show more than ever.

Throughout the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 trailer, it was clear that Gary will be a focal point of the exterior team’s story. Being shown on the deck with some of the exterior team, pushing Deckhands to their limits and critiquing their work, Gary’s presence on the sailing yacht may be odd during Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 . While he appears to be getting along with Daisy , he may not even have her in his corner by the end of the charter season. His heavy involvement in the trailer may not indicate the same throughout the whole season.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Although Gary has been a part of Below Deck Sailing Yacht since the early days of the series, seeing him as a member of the crew after his sexual misconduct allegations came to light is tough. While Bravo filmed Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 before the allegations were revealed, they came to light during the filming of the season and it appears that the network didn’t choose to remove Gary from later episodes or take action at all. Though it remains to be seen if production did anything about Gary , it’s disappointing to some to see him on screen.

Our Take On The Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Trailer

It could be chaotic fun, but gary leaves a stain on the show.

Although the trailer for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 makes it seem like one of the most exciting, dramatic seasons of the series we’ve ever seen, the mess may not be worth it if Gary’s involved. By ignoring the sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Gary and leaving him on the series, seemingly without explanation, Bravo is allowing it to seem like what he may have done is okay. Though nothing has been proven, taking no action on Below Deck Sailing Yacht could be a misstep that may taint the entire season of the sailing spin-off for once excited viewers.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres Monday, October 7 at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

The value of the boat. Surveyors use pricing guides along with their vast experience in valuing boats. A seller or broker may think a boat has a specific worth, but until a survey is performed, those figures are only guesses.
