BOAT TEST: JEANNEAU SUN LOFT 47

Jeanneau’s Sun Loft 47 is purpose built for charter and this has made for an interesting yacht – as James Foot from charter operators Helm reports

When Jeanneau first unveiled plans for a new breed of charter yacht, a self-proclaimed “mono-cat”, many – myself included – scoffed at the concept. But the new Sun Loft 47 goes pretty far in dispelling the doubters.

The press release talks of a revolution in by-the-cabin charters and the layout looks, at first glance, cosy to say the least. But up close, she reveals her true colours – and they’re very bright.

The core concepts here are space and simplicity. Frédéric Bonin from Jeanneau explained that this drive for keeping everything simple and clutter-free makes the Sun Loft both customer and charter company friendly. This philosophy also helped them get to market quickly – by basing the Sun Loft 47 on the existing hull of the popular Sun Odyssey 490, Jeanneau had a ready-made mould, saving time and money, to which they have added a new deck and layout below. They’ve also added extra lead to the keel to counter the extra weight up top, and the result is remarkably balanced.

The cockpit is fully enclosable in case of bad weather, or the bimini can fold down to open the area up. A retractable central sun roof is a great touch, supported by the flared hardtop “flyroof”, adding the kind of all-elements protection usually only found on catamarans.

The new layout effectively swaps out the central module (saloon, galley, etc), with a new one that significantly extends the cockpit forward, and lifts the galley outside to just aft of the companionway. This has a somewhat decluttered feel to it, as below there are simply cabins and heads, with all living and socialising space on deck. The bow and midships cabins are still accessed via the companionway, while the two aft cabins have separate direct entrances, much like a catamaran. Very sociable.

Initially, I worried about space in the cockpit, crammed as it now was with all of the galley equipment and necessary storage, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that we could happily fit four of us in the galley area, and still socialise with those lounging on the stern sunbeds, not overheat, and have great view – all unusual for anyone who’s spent their share of time above the stove.

The new cockpit galley features a large plancha grill and a single hob, able to hold a 24cm pan. Jeanneau claim the plancha can hold 12 steaks or 24 sausages simultaneously – sadly we did not put that claim to the test, but our grilled chicken and vegetable skewers were delicious. There are four generous fridges, each of which can go to -2˚C, ideal for keeping your food fresh and your sundowners nice and cold.

Two large dining tables at the back both convert easily into day beds, and you can comfortably fit seven people around each table at meal times. This combination of deck-level lounging, sailing and cooking space lends the Sun Loft 47 a distinctly catamaran-esque feel.

Controversially, there is no chart table and also no chart plotter. Bonin’s reasoning here was simple – charter guests these days, especially in the era of free data roaming, prefer to use apps such as Navionics on their tablets and phones, rather than relying on a potentially outdated fixed chart plotter. To cater for this, the dashboard in front of each helm station houses adjustable brackets for phones or tablets instead. As for passage planning, this can be done at either of the two large aft tables.

21st century touches

All models will come with a standard 750l water tank, as well as an innovative 350l drinking water tank, complete with a carbon filter and dedicated tap. Jeanneau hope this will help reduce plastic waste, and in turn help the yacht appeal to a more environmentally savvy young customer base. Choosing not to add to the hundreds of thousands of plastic water bottles carried by charter yachts around the world is certainly something to be praised.

Pitched clearly as something of a party boat, the Sun Loft needs a speaker system that matches her appeal, and the 600w beasts (usually at home on wakeboard boats) at either side of the stern certainly do it justice. LED strip lighting runs throughout, adding to the ambience.

There is nothing earth-shattering about the fixtures and fittings, just simple, well-executed solutions, such as the storage boxes, washboard storage sleeves, or the chopping board integrated into the sink top – there are no gimmicks like wine racks in the bilges though. Another nod to modernity comes in the shape of the USB chargers – the Sun Loft 47 has 21 fully waterproofed chargers throughout.

Accommodation

This is where the Sun Loft 47 really comes into her own, with six double cabins, plus a skipper’s cabin. The two amidships cabins also very easily convert into surprisingly spacious bunk cabins, thanks to a couple of Pullmans. This is a great set-up for crews of eight or even nine who each required their own bed.

The open space at deck level makes her ideal for larger bareboat or skippered groups of 10-12.

Performance

The Sun Loft 47 is a yacht that knows its niche and sits very comfortably within it. This is a yacht targeted solely at the charter market, towards holidaymakers happy to be on the water, rather than diehard sailors. All models will be equipped with in-mast furling and a self-tacking jib, harking back to the core principle of keeping things simple.

Given these caveats, as a sailing yacht, she still holds her own. On my test sail, we had her doing 5.7kn upwind in 8.2kn of true wind speed. So, for a comfortable holiday platform, she still performs reasonably. There is even the option of adding a Code 0.

Designer Philippe Briand has actually experimented with the crossover monohull/catamaran concept before, as he drew the Dufour Atoll almost 20 years ago. I’m pleased to say that his newest work is a marked step up from that out-of-its-time design and has a much more refined feel to it.

A monohull with the space and open, single-level layout of a catamaran, the Sun Loft 47 has been pitched as a modern solution for the sharing economy, designed for by-the-cabin charters. But this is much more than just a cabin yacht. The extra space created by the cockpit galley opens up new possibilities and feels truly innovative. The flexible midship cabins mean this could be the ideal larger group bareboat yacht for those who want to get from A to B comfortably and in style, rather than just quickly.

The Sun Loft 47 Monocat: a Game Changer for Yacht Chartering

A peak season cabin-share sailing holiday with skipper in glorious Croatia in August. Chartering a 2020-model 47 foot sailboat for just 175€ per person per day! Innovation in Using Boat Space

Here at the charter desk, it’s no surprise to us that leading production boat company Jeanneau has called their clever new design a “monocat”. For years I have maintained that increasing monohull beams are shrinking the advantages of a catamaran over a monohull: for a couple of reasons. 

A wider beam makes any boat less inclined to heel over and gives it more stability at anchor. Beam also determines space relative to boat length, both inside and out. All good stuff for charter! Room to move is critical to an enjoyable charter, and like everything it’s all a matter of finding the right balance. Beamier boats can sleep more people while still leaving places to socialise and relax aboard. The greater the number of bodies, the more important that is!

The Monocat 47 has taken people space a step - a giant leap even - further. It is designed and built for charter, specifically the cabin-share market, whereby each guest pays an equal share for the charter for equal privacy and comfort.

Hop on, Hop off for the Fun Ashore

The Sun Loft 47 delivers catamaran space in a monohull shape; a feature that comes into play in busy ports. Easy access to shore is important on group sailing holidays. It helps keep everyone happy! Where monohulls have advantage over catamarans is in finding docking space at busy quays and marinas. That’s especially true in the Mediterranean where berthing space close to entertainment is always at a premium. An arriving monohull can find a spot to squeeze into when a catamaran is shut out of town.

Let’s face it, with ten people plus on board, the best itinerary you can plan makes it easy to tie onto shore so everyone can come and go as they please. Whether you’re on a cat or a monohull, the dinghy is only so big and there’s only the one: it takes time to ferry people and someone has to do it.

The Perils of Booking by the Cabin

The Sun Loft Monocat 47 design directly responds to a growing trend in sailing holiday travel. That’s sale-by-the-cabin, an idea that’s being exploited by big travel companies. They pack as many people under the age of 30 into a charter boat with skipper. They work on the assumption that this type of customer just wants to have fun with others also looking for a good time, and will put up with close quarters without care for comfort.

Oh how fraught with risk that can be! Over time I’ve met up with many flotillas operating under this structure, and observed more often than not a level of resounding discontent. Once reality bites, there’s objection to having paid so much money only to be treated like cattle on the way to the works. On a recent trip to Greece, I witnessed boat-loads of young people walking off en masse at Alimos Marina, refusing to spend their last night on board.

It’s a tough call putting complete strangers together on a boat of the type and size used for charter, and expecting them to happily cohabitate with a boat-load of strangers in a space that’s just about as small as their wardrobe at home!

What Makes the Monocat 47 Different 

Below deck on this boat, every bit of space is dedicated to private accommodation just as in the hulls of a catamaran. Outside, the cockpit is much more than the name suggests. It extends forward of amidships, with a big space right at the back for everyone, crew included, to socialise and relax in comfort. In front of that is the galley and food preparation area, all outside and on the same level.

The helm station is on the cabin bulkhead as on most cats. The whole outside living space is protected by an ingenious bimini arrangement.

With the unique layout of the Monocat 47, there’s a big social space in which to dine and hang out while soaking up the Mediterranean pleasures, with no separating the workers from the passengers while meals are being prepared. And everyone has a comfortable private space to retire to when needed. It’s as simple as that!   

Cost Benefits when you Charter the Whole Boat

At Sail Connections our focus is complete boat, not by-the-cabin charter. Sure, we see the appeal to young people of hanging out in a flotilla of like-minded people. But partying doesn’t fit into everyone’s idea of the perfect sailing holiday. And even when it does, consider the advantages of spending leisure time with people you already know.

Get together a group of friends or family in sufficient numbers and charter the whole boat; that’s where the savings come in. It’s easy to charter, with or without skipper, directly through a broker, and avoid the high profit structure of the by-the-cabin model. Eliminate the risk of sharing your boating holiday confined with people who are strangers, at least to begin with. Save that for land-based activities where there’s more freedom to choose to stay or get away.

So what’s the cost of chartering a brand new Sun Loft Monocat 47 in Croatia, peak season? With skipper the current charter cost is 8463€, including all insurance and mandatory extras. There is ample room for 10 guests aboard, so that’s just 175€ per person per day! For this you get to enjoy the Mediterranean as only a sailing holiday can provide, going places you’ve read about and doing what you want to do: at your pace, in comfort and having a ball.

The Monocat 47 is also available in the Caribbean, where due to a longer season it costs even less to charter. There a high-season sailing holiday with skipper works out at just 152€ per day per person for a seven day charter.

Bareboat Charter with Skipper Optional

Of course with the required sailboat knowledge and experience you don’t have to hire a skipper, and that saves more again. After all, this is bareboat sailing. But with 10 people chipping in it makes sense to have a local guide, and a designated driver!

Bareboat sailing aboard a Sun Loft Monocat 47 is not for everyone. For sailing purists the layout will take a bit of getting used to, as will the boat’s handling and performance. But it’s not built for speed under sail and most of the time the ample 80hp Yanmar is doing the work. This is a special-purpose charter craft that can go anywhere a conventional charter boat of similar size can go. We’re fascinated by the concept, and welcome it to the fleet.

The Jeanneau SunLoft 47 , designed by renowned architect Philippe Briand, is a new and innovative take on the sailing monohull that incorporates many of the crowd-pleasing social and living space features of a catamaran . For new sailors, charter operators, and those that enjoy entertaining large groups, the SunLoft 47 offers great appeal. She is easy to sail, and comfortably accommodates a crew of 12 with expansive outdoor living spaces and roomy berths – all at a very attractive price.

Optimized Outdoor Living

The SunLoft is perfect for outdoor lovers , with open air spaces optimized to meet the needs of your extensive crew in uncrowded comfort and style. The large outdoor cockpit area effortlessly transitions from dining to lounging, with a cushioned foldout sunbed. The large swim platform with a ladder allows easy access to the water. A spacious and fully equipped outdoor galley adjoins the cockpit , complete with sink, stove, 4 refrigerators, counter space and storage. The onboard systems were designed to support your crew as well, with 2 water tanks (185 gallon for showers / 80 gallon for drinking) , protective bimini and radio equipped with Bluetooth.

Below, the space is dedicated to comfortable sleeping accommodations for up to 12 guests . Uncommon in a yacht of 47-feet, the SunLoft 47 features an impressive 6 cabins : 5 double, one bunk and one forepeak single. The 2 aft double cabins each have en suite baths, while the 4 forward cabins share 2 baths.

The new Sun Loft project from Jeanneau is a boat designed for charter with a galley on the deck and maximum accommodation below with room for up to 12 people, the boat includes a large galley in the cockpit, huge amounts a lounging space in the cockpit and step around side decks. 

A truly unique idea and perfect for families and groups looking to travel away and enjoy the openness of being out in the world and on the water. Designed to replicate the feeling of being on board a catamaran whilst not compromising on the sailing characteristics of the monohull is the aim of the model. 

Based from the hugely appreciated and strong Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490 hull, you’ll find a huge amount of space to relax both on the foredeck and cockpit areas with two large tables which can also be converted into sunpads for yet further relaxation.  

Private access will be to the two aft cabins directly from the cockpit, the two midships and forward cabins will share access from the companionway and the skipper cabin will be accessible through a dedicated hatch in the bows.

Did you know Horizon’s charters start and finish at noon? This means we can get you out sailing your first afternoon after your briefings – remember to watch your video briefings to speed up your check out! At the end of your trip, you sail back to Nanny Cay to refuel and debrief before your noon departure. This gives you a full 6 nights/7 days chartering around our beautiful islands, unlike some companies that start at 5pm, meaning you will have to sleepaboard* at the docks, and then finish at 10am, again meaning you will probably have to stay overnight on the docks the night before you leave to fly home.

*If available, a sleep aboard can be added the night before your charter start for a small supplement, boarding your yacht after 5pm.

Our standard charter rates are applicable for charters of 5 days or more up to a maximum of five weeks. For a tailored quote for charter durations outside this range please contact our reservations team who will be pleased to assits.
