‘Astonishment’ perhaps best describes the press reaction during the   reception onboard following   her launch in 2003:

“…this truly spirited   sailing superyacht …   is reminiscent of a   bygone era where elegant living   was the norm. ”

Boat International

“the perfect interpretation of a classic yacht”

Translation from Boote Exclusiv

Maria Cattiva’s interior fit out and detailed joinery work represented the most complicated project for the shipyard’s cabinetmakers to produce at the time of her build. Coupled with her sleek, low volume classic hull form, the shipyard team was (and obviously still is) very proud of its accomplishment. With the opportunity to step back and see the full extent of her profile, one can fully appreciate her sweeping grace and fine wine glass stern. The slight tumble in her hull moves aft and with artistic precision leads into the trademark stern of naval architect Bruce King.

During her early sailing trials, it was soon apparent that this was a fast powerfully rigged sailing machine. Maria Cattiva features a carbon rig by sister company Rondal, a winged keel configuration and gentle aft sections that leave little to no perceptible wake as she sails along at speeds equalling true wind.

Maria Cattiva Yacht

Maria Cattiva Luxury Sail Yacht by Royal Huisman

Sail Yacht Maria Cattiva

Once, the huisman series of advertisements carried the headline 'another typical huisman yacht'. this play on words, because a typical huisman yacht doesn't exist, is characterized in the look and feel of maria cattiva. typical for huisman was the fact that this 40m bruce king designed cutter rigged sloop was not typical at all.

"Maria Cattiva", a cutter rigged sloop with a length of 40 metres, was designed by Bruce King and built by the Royal Huisman Shipyard in Holland. Built under full Lloyds/MCA classification Bruce King was challenged to design a world wide cruising yacht of stately good looks.

Having a deck layout arranged around two deckhouses with adjoining cockpits, Bruce King has stylized this design with his signature of oval shaping for structures combined with an intricate array of spectacular details. And although built of lightweight Alustar aluminum the look is of traditional wooden construction. The deckhouse sides, cockpit coamings, hatches and all other general deck joinery is in high gloss varnished teak providing a level of elegance not attainable any other way. And as if this elegance was not enough, King has elected to use a high aspect carbon fiber mast with a fully battened slab reefing mainsail to undoubtedly optimize her performance right on down to the lowest of wind strengths.

The equally intricate interior design and styling has been accomplished by Rhoades Young. Her sleek and classically elegant hull form meant that a carefully arranged interior layout was required. Whilst not over powering, Maria Cattiva is oriented toward cosy family comfort. Using "cosiness" as a design detail, Dick Young Design has given a hand made feel to the deeply stained paneled interior which invites the hand to rub and feel, and take in the pleasures that only wood can provide the senses. This beautifully classic cabinetry work in dark mahogany with painted and fielded panels has been a total joy for the Royal Huisman carpenters whom are very proud of this craftsmanlike Huisman accomplishment.

Maria Cattiva wins Superyacht Cup Palma 2012

Yachting World

  • June 25, 2012

Second across the line is Atalante followed by Highland Breeze

Palma, Mallorca 25 June 2012 – A jubilant owner and crew of the 40m Royal Huisman Maria Cattiva celebrated winning the overall Superyacht Cup Palma 2012 as the event drew to a close over the weekend. In 2 nd place came Atalant e followed by Highland Breeze in 3 rd .

Taking the stage at the prize giving ceremony on Saturday evening, the owner and crew of Maria Cattiva owner were awarded the coveted ‘Big Ben Cleat’ and thanked their fellow competitors for a fantastic week promising to return next year to defend their title. The yacht was also presented with a beautiful hand crafted 3D nautical chart of Mallorca supplied by event sponsor Latitude Kinsale.

The final race of the event on Saturday was delayed to a complete shift in wind direction from a northerly to southerly direction. The fleet finally crossed the line as the staggered start sequence commended just before 1400. Both classes headed upwind to the first mark in the center of the bay, after which the faster boats in Class 1 also had to complete an extra reaching leg before rejoining the Class 2 fleet on the final downwind leg to the finish.

The breeze peaked at 17 knots but remained consistent at around 12-14 knots. It was regatta winner Maria Cattiva that held their position to cross the line first followed by Atalante and Highland Breeze flying their prominent GAASTRA spinnaker.

David Glenn, Editor of Yachting World magazine was also sailing aboard This is Us finishing 3 rd in class and 6 th overall for the regatta;

“Despite an understandably smaller fleet this year, SYC Palma was as enjoyable as ever and blessed with near perfect sailing conditions. Owners and crew warm to this regatta because the conditions ashore and afloat are conducive to enjoyment for all. What I was particularly keen to hear was owners expressing their desire not only to return next year but in years to come, some with firm plans for new and larger yachts.”

The event closed with the spectacular prize-giving ceremony on the terrace of the Es Baluard Museum overlooking the bay of Palma. The event also presented a cheque of €6,000 to the long running event charity Joves Navegantes who are celebrating their 20 th anniversary this year. Guests enjoyed a magnificent spread of local food and live music as the sunset drew a close to the 2012 regatta.

For some, however, the racing season continues as they prepare for the first Superyacht Cup Cowes due to take place from 22-25 July in the UK being held this year as a celebration of the London 2012 Olympics. Currently a 13-strong fleet are expected in Cowes including the 62m Holland Jachtbouw Athos and the Dykstra/Pendennis 55m Adela , both competitors at the Palma Superyacht Cup 2011.  HRH The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will also be visiting Cowes on 25 July with a planned parade of sail by the Superyacht Cup fleet.

Angelina Jolie ‘terribly nervous’ about playing opera diva Maria Callas in new film

maria cattiva yacht

VENICE – Angelina Jolie confessed she was afraid of not being able to “live up” to Maria Callas’ legend in her new biopic about the great diva’s extraordinary yet tragic life.

In Maria – which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Aug 29 – the American movie star tackles the tormented final years of the 20th century’s most celebrated opera singer, who mesmerised audiences around the world.

“The bar in this... are the Maria Callas fans and those who love opera,” Jolie told a press conference ahead of the premiere of the movie by Chilean director Pablo Larrain. “And my fear would be to disappoint them.”

“I really came to care for her, so I felt I didn’t want to do a disservice to this woman,” she added.

Jolie, 49, said she hoped to honour the legacy of the diva, who died nearly alone in 1977 aged 53, after a whirlwind life and career that was nevertheless marked by great sadness.

The much-anticipated highlight of the festival’s second day was the last in Larrain’s trilogy of movies about iconic women – after Spencer (2021) about Britain’s Princess Diana and Jackie (2016) on former United States first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

Larrain has said only a larger-than-life star in her own right could play the role of the America-born Greek singer, whose successes at La Scala, La Fenice, Covent Garden and New York are the stuff of opera legend 100 years after her birth.

“This movie would not have existed without Angelina,” he said.

Absent from the screen since 2021, the American actress and director has kept a relatively low profile even as her lengthy, acrimonious divorce from American actor Brad Pitt continues to make headlines.

The public’s fascination with Jolie’s private life has parallels with Callas, whose stormy life and loves – including her relationship with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who left her for Mrs Kennedy – were similarly fodder for the tabloids.

But while the paparazzi were out in full force on Aug 29 for Jolie on the red carpet – in a camel gown with matching faux-fur shrug – the actress will not cross paths with Pitt, 60, during her visit.

Pitt’s action comedy Wolfs, in which he and American actor George Clooney play rival professional fixers, is playing out of competition on the Lido on Sept 1, as purposely planned by festival organisers to avoid awkward encounters.

Living up to Callas

One of 21 films in competition for Venice’s prestigious Golden Lion prize, Maria opens with a whirlwind edit of the highlights of Callas’ life as seen through the eyes of the paparazzi, with Jolie singing Casta Diva in Paris in her red silk wrap, accepting ovations at Italian opera house La Scala or frolicking with Mr Onassis on his yacht.

In reality, the frail artiste is popping sedatives and remembering those heady days of her life – most of them onstage – through drug-induced flashbacks, in the tour-de-force performance by Jolie.

“Music is born of distress,” says Callas, as she vainly struggles to find her faltering voice yet again, sheltering at home in the company of her trusted butler and housemaid (played by Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino and actress Alba Rohrwacher) and occasionally breaking the monotony to sit alone in cafes to “be adored”.

Jolie said she studied for nearly seven months ahead of filming, training herself to mimic the great artiste’s cadences and tones as the film mixes in her own singing voice with that of the celebrated soprano. “I was terribly nervous,” Jolie said. “I was frightened to live up to her.”

Jolie said she related to Callas’ gentler side, “the part of her that’s extremely soft and doesn’t have room in the world to be as soft as she truly was, and as emotionally open as she truly was”.

“I share her vulnerability more than anything.”

Loneliness and pain

While some critics found flaws with Callas’ voice, it was nevertheless deeply expressive, able to impart dramatic intensity to any role, which – combined with her beauty and presence – often brought frenzied standing ovations.

A towering talent with a tireless work ethic, Callas was often portrayed as a “temperamental” star, a label she rejected, defending herself as a disciplined perfectionist with high standards.

She single-handedly revived the 19th-century bel canto operas of Italian composers Gaetano Donizetti, Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini – whose Norma (1831) was one of Callas’ signature roles.

But the diva’s voice began to fail and, even as she struggled to rekindle it, the “critics were so cruel”, said Jolie.

“I don’t know if she passed knowing that she did her best and she was appreciated and loved. I think she may have died with a lot of loneliness and pain.” AFP
